Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
The aim of this thesis is to investigate the gay discourse in the soup operas produced by Globo Televison. Firstly, I made a micro analysis, linguistic analysis, using the Functional Grammar proposed by Halliday as basis. I focused on the notion of Ideacional, Interperpessonal and Textual metafunctions. After this analysis I made a macro analysis, social analysis, based on the theories of Foucault (power relations in society, discourse and sexuality), Fairclough (hegemony, power relations and discourse, media studies), Connell (masculinities), Moita Lopes, Hall and Goffman (identity analysis) and Baruman (communities in the globalization era). Before I start the corpus analysis, I presented a brief history of homosexuality in different cultures and social contexts, including Brazil since colonial period until nowadays. Then, I presented the history of soap operas in Brazil and the hegemony of Globo Televison in the production of the genre. After that, I began to analyse the corpus with a small resumé of the two soap operas and the corpus analysis was made through senteces extracted from the soap operas . Finally, I made the macro analysis with the aim to discover if the gay discourse presented in the soap operas contribute or not to the construction of the gay identity in Brazil.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Rio de Janeiro is a destination known worldwide and it has been gaining notoriety as one of the most famous gay-friendly destinations in the world. Tourism is one of the main sources of income of the city, what benefits not only the private companies in this area but also the population in general. With this in mind, this dissertation intended to understand how tourists feel about Rio and, mainly, to understand their perspective on how gay-friendly Rio is. Through literature review concerning the theme, this study included qualitative and quantitative research in order to have a better understanding of the subject, besides the development of a new scale to measure the gay-friendliness of a destination. The data were obtained from personal interviews with gay people and from a survey conducted among gay tourists about their recent experiences in Rio. The results indicated what aspects are more important to gay tourists, such as security, expressing identities and sexuality openly, beyond stablishing relations between the different variables taken under consideration. It has been clear that the travel motivation varies according to the destination image and that satisfactory experiences tend to create destination loyalty, recommendation and revisit. With the results, it has been found the importance of touristic marketing in providing gay tourists with satisfactory visits. At last, the research proposes measures to be taken by the interested parts to attract and retain tourists that are so financial and economically valuable.

Abstract (sommario):
The gay sauna played a central role in the battle for gay liberation in Sydney during the latter part of the twentieth century. This thesis examines the conjunction of social and political forces which contributed to the acceptance of the gay sauna by Sydney???s civic society. Two questions reveal this process: 1. How was an illegal and clandestine place for homosexuals, perceived as a threat to the moral standards of Sydney, transformed into an institutional entity, legally recognised as ???crucial???, and important within particular environs of this city? 2. How did the evolving public domain of gay saunas contribute to the development of gay culture in Sydney by fostering the opportunities for individual and collective expression of homosexual practices? This study is contextualised within international and Australian studies of the sexualisation of urban spaces???such as Michel Foucault???s, Manuel Castells??? and Lawrence Knopp???s???and the role of the built environment in the development of sexual identity and sexual practices???such as Gayle Rubin???s, John Ricco???s, and Joel Brodsky???s. The first part of the thesis is an empirical analysis of development applications for gay saunas in Sydney between 1967 and 2000 which reveals the play of forces within state and local government, legislative processes, the homosexual community and broader civic stakeholders through which the gay sauna achieved acceptance in Sydney???s civic society. Two principal research approaches???documentary research and twenty in-depth interviews???were used in this first part. The second part of the thesis is an ethnography that uses twenty-nine in-depth interviews to provided a unique insight into the evolving public domain of Sydney???s gay saunas and how they fostered the experiences of gay men, allowing gay men to develop individual and collective sexual identities and practices. This exploration of the interplay of built form, sexuality, civic governance, social identity and social action provide a sociological contribution which will also be of interest to gay studies, anthropology, architecture, geography and planning. Essential to an experience of the thesis is a concurrent reading of the Special Enclosures???a schematic chronology of Sydney gay saunas, plans of Sydney and architectural plans of its saunas.

Abstract (sommario):
This project explores the question of gay male identity and community formation in relation to the production of social space designated as "gay." What economic, social, political and symbolic resources are involved in the production of gay space? And how can social space be thought of as creating the conditions of possibility for the formation of specific gay identities and communities?
Using a "production of space" analysis adapted from the work of Henri Lefebvre, I examine the case of Montreal's gay village. I argue that the emergence of this space, in both material and symbolic terms, has led to a particular sense of "spatial identity" among many gay men in Montreal. I analyze the implications of these "space-based" identities for queer community formation and conclude that the Village constitutes a compromise with the dominant culture, rather than a radical form of spatial praxis.

Abstract (sommario):
The existing literature on intimate partner violence is vast, yet scarce about phenomenon of same sex intimate partner. Thus, this work aimed to study the prevalence of violence and violent dynamics in gay couples, lesbians and bisexuals, both in the role of victims and perpetrators in the past and present relationships, comparing the groups with each other. It was taken an online sample of 74 participants who self-perception as being gay, lesbian or bisexual. Gays were aged between 19 and 85 years (M= 29.88, SD= 12:38), lesbians between 21 and 52 years (M= 32.36, SD= 10:32) and bisexuals between 20 and 39 years (M= 25.18; DP = 6.27). The instrument used was the questionnaire "Violence and Abuse in Same-Sex Relationships" (Noret & Richards, 2003; translation made by Domingues, Sani & Soeiro, 2014), in which after a literature review about the implicit concepts, we proceeded to statistical analysis in order to meet the stated objectives. The main results show consistency with international and national studies have revealed, namely that violence within relationships of gays, lesbians and bisexuals exists and worrying rates. The three groups showed similar prevalence in all analyzed dimensions, being the most common type of violence, both received as practiced, psychological/emotional. Interestingly outing behavior, conduct specific to this type of population, was the type of violence least mentioned. So this is a population that should not be overlooked and which should work promoting intervention and prevention policies about the phenomenon of violence, knocking obstacles encountered by the revelation of this problem.

Lau, Hoi-leung, e 劉凱亮. "Experiencing risky pleasure : the exploration of 'Chem-fun' in the Hong Kong gay community". Thesis, The University of Hong Kong (Pokfulam, Hong Kong), 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10722/206339.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
This qualitative study purports to explore the prevailing phenomenon of ‘Chem-Fun’, i.e. the combination of drug use and gay sex in the Hong Kong gay community, with the use of in-depth interviews (March 2012 to August 2013 [n=30]), participant observation (February 2012 to July 2013 [18 months]), and textual analysis of two gay websites (March to April 2012 [2 months]). By pinpointing the two loopholes of epidemiological dominance and missing drug in the local drug and local gay literature respectively, this study adopts a cultural approach to fill the gap in which the crucial elements of agency, pleasure, and context are examined. Drawing on the three theoretical strands of postmodern intimacies, geographies of sexuality, and Foucauldian notion of power/resistance, a four-dimensional analytical model has been derived from the data to explore the four major aspects of ‘Chem-Fun’: contexts, spaces, intimacies, and subjectivities. Instead of viewing ‘Chem-Fun’ as a ‘trinity of double’, i.e. double sin (moral/ legal sin), double epidemic (drug addiction and HIV/STDs infection), and double marginalization (from straight/gay world) but rather a ‘way of life’, this study argues that ‘Chem-Fun’ should be understood as a specific form of gay choices, gay project, gay connection, and gay mastery. For contexts, the emergence, prevalence, and transformation of ‘Chem-Fun’ represent a mixture of glocalized and personalized product revolving around the community culture and individual choices, i.e. gay choices. For spaces, the ‘Chem-space’ constitutes a ‘do-it-yourself project’ for the gay men to undermine the dominations of heteronormativity, health imperialism, and homonormativity and hence reclaim their selves and uses of pleasure, i.e. gay project. For intimacies, the intimate ethics of pure eroticism or the ‘RCTF’ culture (respect, collectivity, trust, and flexibility) demonstrates the three principles of emotional democracy (egalitarianism, autonomy, and solidarity) and cultivates an alternative political agenda of gay hedonism, i.e. gay connection. For subjectivities, the refashioning of ‘Chem-Fun’ as an edgework suggests the complicated subjectivities of playmates, i.e. gay mastery. Informed by the cultural approach, these four aspects have painted an alternative picture about ‘Chem-Fun’ in contrast with the epidemiological way of understanding. They are not necessarily a passive, fixed, and pathological retreatist but an arch-inventor, sensation-seeker, and edgeworker to build their own life. Without ignoring the relevant risks, this study gives pleasure an adequate space to understand ‘Chem-Fun’. As a form of queer life, ‘Chem-Fun’ is not just about personal experiences but also collectivities that implies the possible way out of local tongzhi movement from gay pride to gay shame. In this sense, there should be ‘Chem-Fun’ stories but not story. Apart from filling the missing gay and missing drug in local drug and gay study respectively, this research contributes to the sociology of sexuality by connecting the individual intoxicated eroticism to the runaway world of social flows, engaging with the existing concepts to explore the postmodern lives and geographies in the non-Western context, enriching the telling sexual stories tradition, and serving as a methodological remedy for the inadequacy of ethnography or insider perspective in examining drug-related practices in Hong Kong.

Young, Josephine. "Attitude Functions and Political Behavior: The Issue of Gay Civil Rights". PDXScholar, 1992. https://pdxscholar.library.pdx.edu/open_access_etds/4531.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
This study explored the relationship between voters' political behavior regarding the issue of gay rights and the underlying psychological needs served by their attitudes on this issue. A telephone survey of 100 randomly selected local voters was conducted, during which Herek's (1987) Attitude Functions Inventory (AFI) was administered. Three of the four attitude function subscales (Experiential- Schematic, Social-Expressive and Ego-Defensive) were confirmed using a LISREL confirmatory factor analysis. The Value-Expressive subscale was not confirmed and showed poor reliability. Pro- and anti-gay rights behavior was measured using a Political Behavior Index (PBI) developed for this study. Regression analyses and MANOVAs were employed to test six hypotheses, all of which received some support. Pro-gay rights behavior was associated with ExperientialSchematic attitudes and a Value-Expressive item regarding civil liberties. Anti-gay rights behavior was associated with Ego-Defensive attitudes and a Value-Expressive item regarding moral beliefs. Men scored higher on the EgoDefensive function than did women. Those who knew more gay people were more likely to exhibit Experiential-Schematic attitudes and were less likely to hold Ego-Defensive attitudes. These findings imply that efforts to change anti-gay rights behavior need to address the underlying motivations of Ego-Defense and Value-Expression regarding the construct of moral beliefs. An additional implication is a potential for increasing support for the legal rights of gay people by increasing association with people one knows to be gay.

Abstract (sommario):
Sexual orientation identity involves private and public ways of self-identification therefore it is considered as a key multidimensional element in the identity of people. Moreover, it has direct influence in making decisions in the personal and interpersonal sphere. Nevertheless, in Peru there is no scale that evaluates this construct in lesbian, gay and bisexual (LGB) people. Therefore, this research aimed to adapt and assess the psychometric properties of the Lesbian, Gay and Bisexual Identity Scale (LGBIS) proposed by Mohr and Kendra (2011) on a sample of 378 LGB Peruvian people. First of all, a linguistic adaptation of the scale was done. Later, appropriate validity evidence based on test content was assessed by 6 experts in the topic. Validity evidence based on internal structure was estimated by an exploratory factor analysis which showed a multidimensional solution of two factors. Consequently, this structure differed from the original version. The two dimensions were identified as: uncertainty and acceptance concerns (ordinal a = .88, EEM = 3.29) and identity integration (ordinal a = .91 EEM = 1.86), According to these results, a new scale was proposed: “The Lesbian, gay and bisexual dimensions of Sexual Orientation Identity Scale” (EDOS-LGB). In conclusion, results showed that interpretations based on the scores obtained by adapting the EDOSLGB presents validity and reliability evidence in lesbian, gay and bisexual people from Perú.

Abstract (sommario):

This research aims to analyze the construction of gay characters in narratives displayed in the range night Globo. This is to demonstrate how are strongly marked by heteronormativity, understood as the organization of male sexuality, and how the privilege of this standard becomes invisible even homosexuality in the novels overall. We hypothesized that, unlike what happens with heterosexuality, which organizes homosexuality as an opposite, heteronormativity does not include opposition or heteronomy.

Abstract (sommario):
This study investigates the relationship between an individual's attitude toward gay men and lesbians and their identity development. The sample included 440 undergraduates from a university in the northeast Texas area. Many, if not all, of the factors that are associated with negative attitudes toward gays and lesbians (i.e., restrictive gender-role attitudes, high levels of authoritarianism, perceptions of negative attitudes toward homosexuals within their peer group, little or no contact with homosexuals, and conservative religious ideologies) have a logical relation to identity development. Furthermore, the various functions that attitudes toward gays and lesbians can serve (e.g., value-expression, group membership) were hypothesized to be especially attractive for persons in specific identity statuses. Thus, the case was made that identity development may be a valuable framework in which to understand attitudes toward gays and lesbians. In the current study, attitudes toward gays and lesbians were related to identity development, though the relationship is complex. When comparing persons who were higher and lower on absolutism, attitude toward gays and lesbians were most similar in achieved identity groups, while those who were foreclosed were the most disparate. In the interaction between identity, absolutism and gender role stereotyping, some groups utilized their attitude to express values more than other groups. Clinical implications as well as limitations of the study are discussed.

Abstract (sommario):
This project is significant to social work because it addresses a topic that has not been given much attention. This particular population has not been studied much and we know little about the issues that are important to mentally ill gays and lesbians. Even in schools of social work this particular topic is frequently overlooked, and when it is discussed it is usually in relation to another topic.

There is much social, cultural and academic debate on topics related to adoption by gay men. Literature on this subject refers to many variables in the formation of these families, highlighting gaps in the journey these men are taking. Bearing in mind the need for credible information, we sought to understand the process experienced by openly gay men and their adopted children in order to identify the key challenges. This was qualitative research carried out through semi-structured interviews with six men aged between 35 and 52 years old, when they adopted children aged between eight months and 14. We sought to identify different scenarios throughout the process, from the initial desire to adopt, to the necessary legal and personal preparation, as well as the daily routine of bringing up children of different ages. We identified similarities among parents who adopted children later in life, in particular their willingness to adopt children with varying profiles. These men are primary caregivers responsible for their children’s daily life and education. We also found both the decision to adopt and the process itself were carried out independently of family and friends. Men often have to deal with feelings of anxiety and fear throughout the process, as they slowly develop a closer relationship with, and support the needs of the adopted child. Changes in the parents’ daily routines, even if they were anticipated, were much bigger and difficult to cope with - as well as problems faced by single parents. It was concluded that the parents’ sexuality was less important in cases of single parent adoptions made later in life, in which parents were ill-prepared and lacked social support, highlighting the need for pre- and postadoption support
