Abstract (sommario):
In this discussion of drag and popular culture, I should make it very clear at the outset that I will be discussing drag in the context of gay culture. This does not mean to say that drag does not exist outside of gay culture, or that every person who dresses in drag (male or female) is gay or lesbian. But, first of all, my specialty is gay culture, and secondly, much of the drag we see in popular or avant-garde art comes from that world. And finally, I’m just dreadfully tired of turning on the television and watching drag artistes on interview shows who are asked whether or not they are gay, replying “I really don’t think sex is that important, do you, that it has to enter into everything? I love women very much, and I’m dating a very lovely woman at the moment, thank you.” The fact of the matter is that many drag artists are gay and this is quite simply because drag is a significant element in gay culture. So much time is wasted (as is always wasted around gay matters) with men defending their so-called “masculinity” that it’s time to redress the imbalance and talk of drag in the context of its roots. (Keep in mind that when I suggest that drag has its roots in gay culture I am referring to modern western culture of the last 500 years. Obviously in Asian cultures and ancient cultures there are different cultural and sociological factors involved.)

Abstract (sommario):
Perceptions of the boundaries of masculinity have often been questioned in menswear, with the masculine ideal continually reimagined to create a balance between itself and its counterpart, femininity. During the 1980s AIDS crisis, this adopted uniform of masculinity was subverted within queer society leading to a new male identity that contested tacit knowledge of menswear design. The focus of this article is to showcase this shift in male image and to explore how gay semiotics was associated with the development of the modern gay male stance through clothing and social empowerment, opposing the negativity that surrounded the AIDS virus. This research is personally motivated by the primary author, where he seeks to delve further into the under-researched area of queer masculinity utilizing a practical, experimental methodology. Representation of what is seen as queer masculinity is often shown as biased within society, characterizing the gay man. This project presents, through the practices of menswear design, how this characterization has developed within the context of the male body. It aims to contest the boundaries of traditional men’s tailoring, its formality and the masculine ideal that it represents, by juxtaposing it with the homoerotic art of the time and the craft of AIDS sufferers of the 1980s period. Using object-study and practical methods of deconstruction and repair of case study (bespoke and non-bespoke) men’s tailored jackets, the research manifests in physical experimentation and aesthetic visualization, which is recorded in a creative process journal. The acts of physical deconstruction and the practice of repair are then analysed through the process of design development (drawing, sourcing and sampling). The synthesized findings draw parallels with deconstructed tailoring found in vintage photographs of men at work, which are further triangulated with homoerotic photographic art of the 1980s and the act of repair found in the stitch therapy of AIDS sufferers. These are embedded in the construction of the final artefact through the practice of garment design (drawing, pattern-cutting, toiling and making) and craftsmanship (stitching by hand). The processes employed and final artefact produced document and present how ideals of masculinity in the time of AIDS can be both physically and metaphorically deconstructed, then reconstructed as a garment-based outcome (men’s tailored jacket) in practice-led research. The final artefact showcases delicacy in design through the act of stitching by hand and the repair of the deconstructed robust exteriors found in tailoring and associated with the masculine ideal.

Abstract (sommario):
The article examines the problems of legislative regulation of liability for violent sexual crimes and the qualification of such offences. The author states that Russian criminal law is ambiguous in its understanding of such categories as sexual intercourse, lesbian and gay homosexual acts. The content of other actions of sexual nature also poses questions. The analysis of criminal law norms protecting the sexual freedom of a person, as well as the analysis of court and investigation reports, showed that some criteria of differentiating liability for these crimes are not well-grounded. A systemic approach to examining the norms of Chapter 18 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (CC of the RF) revealed the following problems. The current version of the CC of the RF does not penalize a violent sexual act if its victim is male. The use of violence by a woman against a man during a sexual intercourse is not covered by Art. 132 of the CC of the RF, because other sexual acts, according to law, are sexual acts that are not sexual intercourse, lesbian or gay homosexual acts. Simultaneous existence of actus reus under Art. 131 and 132 of the CC of the RF, according to the principle of legality, should prevent from charging for rape under Art. 131 only. Human sexuality requires, as a rule, that sexual intercourse should be accompanied by other acts of sexual nature (forced kissing, masturbation, impact on breasts or other sexual acts) aimed at achieving sexual arousal and satisfaction, which, under Art. 17 of the CC of the RF, constitutes a combination of offences. The differentiation of liability for various acts of sexual nature under Art. 131 and 132 of the CC of the RF violates the principle of justice. If there is a sequence of violent sexual acts (for example, oral and anal penetration with the use of violence), these actions are qualified only pursuant to Art. 132 of the CC of the RF. If there is a violent sexual intercourse and some other act of sexual nature, these actions are punished as multiple offenses. The author uses doctrinal views, analysis of current legislation and the practice of its enforcement to suggest a solution for the described problems.

Abstract (sommario):
Due to the homoerotic undertones of male underwear ad campaigns and their representations of sexualized bodies, male underwear and their packaging are formative objects in the realization of one’s same-sex desire. Underwear often projects a gay male gaze and becomes a symbolic object charged with ethos, desire and shame. In this article, I expand on my own relationship and encounters with this formative object, informed by this broader landscape of representations. I present projects from my fibre-based art practice that consists of the transformation and embellishment of male underwear. I contextualize the act of hand-embellishing a mass-produced object as a powerful agent for adaptation and appropriation, and I explore the potential to formally queer this normative object. Finally, I mention a project in which I receive worn and stained male underwear that I embroider on before sending them back to their owner. Accompanied by conversations with their owners, I trace individuals’ unique and similar relationship with this object. I argue that these different creative practices, which hand-alter, adapt or re-create the underwear, interrupt normative consumption cycles and misuse of undergarment functionality and can create a space ‘for us’.

Abstract (sommario):
Serendipity has always played a role in research, and today the availability of digitised newspapers through Trove offers new opportunities for chance discoveries. A couple of years ago, Glenn R. Cooke — then Research Curator of Queensland Heritage at the Queensland Art Gallery — referred me to a snippet from The Queenslander of 15 October 1892, where the Melbourne correspondent writes: My attention was recently drawn to ‘Drifting’, a novel by a Queensland lady who uses the nom de plume of ‘Ellerton Gay.’ She lived, I believe, for eighteen years in Toowoomba, and is the wife of Mr. J. Watts-Grimes, who is well known in squatting circles. She has lived in England six years, and there she has embalmed her memories of the Queensland which is so dear to her. ‘Drifting’ is much admired here. ‘What's in a name?’ asks the title of one of Ellerton Gay's short stories. The pseudonym, which was evidently an open secret in her lifetime, has subsequently obscured ‘Ellerton Gay’ and her creator, Emma Watts Grimes, from the view of literary historians: Patrick Buckridge and I, for example, overlooked her in our historical survey of literature in Queensland, By the book (2007). Until very recently, the AustLit Database listed her as male, with no further biographical details, and — despite its recent facsimile republication of her novel, Drifting under the Southern Cross (1890) — the British Library fails to make the link between Ellerton Gay and Emma Watts Grimes in its catalogue entry. The reissue of this novel, justifiably ‘much admired’ in its own time, suggests that its elusive author is worth a reappraisal. Since Ellerton Gay's oeuvre draws extensively on the lived experience of Emma Watts Grimes and her extended family, this article provides a biographical sketch before discussing the fictional works.

Abstract (sommario):
This essay focuses on the brief moment in early seventies filmmaking when the porn industry made narrative-based films such as Deep Throat (1972) and Behind the Green Door (1972). This attempt to fuse porn with mainstream culture has come back into vogue in the present, when we see a new legitimization of porn. One might say that recent representations of sex on the screen have attempted to go back to the early seventies to restart a trajectory that was never able to complete itself. The essay begins with a consideration of the origins of porn films in nineteenth-century European art before moving on to the discussion of the seventies porn films and the complex way in which European art cinema influenced mainstream porn. Related to this topic are how cultural differences within countries influence the approach to sex that is expressed on the screen. In the US, the seventies full-length porn films legitimized certain sexual acts for their audiences and centered some of the pleasure on the screen on female desire as a way to expand the audience for porn. The essay concludes with a coda on the gay male cinematic equivalents of straight seventies porn films.

Abstract (sommario):
Through public, intentional and interventionist displays of the queer body, queer Chinese artists have used performance art for identity expression, community building and social activism. This article focuses on some of these queer performance artworks, those that engage with the theme of weddings; that is, performance artworks that draw on and critique the social conventions of wedding ceremonies. Focusing on five case studies – the lesbian artist duo Shi Tou and Ming Ming’s photography and installation about queer women’s intimacy; queer filmmakers Fan Popo and David Zheng’s 2009 film New Beijing, New Marriage, a documentary based on a same-sex wedding performance in central Beijing; queer feminist filmmaker He Xiaopei’s performance artwork and films; the Young Feminist Activist Group’s 2012 public performance Bloody Brides to protest domestic violence against women, and the queer artist duo Cheng Yumo and Huang Ziwei’s Grand Gay Wedding performance in Zurich in 2022 – this article demonstrates that the wedding format has been used by Chinese queer artists, performers and activists in creative, innovative and critical ways; it gives new meanings to traditional wedding practices and helps rethink how queerness can relate to established social institutions and conventions in a global context. This article extends existing scholarship on performance art in the 1980s and 1990s which was predominantly male-dominated, heteronormative and elitist avant-garde art practice; it also highlights the role of performance art in contemporary China’s feminist and LGBTQ+ social movements and in articulating gender and sexual politics.

Abstract (sommario):
Purpose By means of several auto-ethnographic stories (including a scene from a working script for a proposed film), the author interrogates numerous ideas and misconceptions about gay youth, both past and present. A “bargain of silence” sometimes following gay sexual encounters in youth is described. The paper aims to discuss these issues. Design/methodology/approach The author recounts a sexual experience with a male college student in his past. This dissonance catapulted the author to move from his small liberal arts college to the city and begin his education again at an art college. Findings The author then describes his personal attraction to a 16-year-old boy who lived near his lodgings during one summer’s break from art college. This time, the relationship remained purely platonic, but that did not seem to matter where the boy’s parents were concerned. The author’s social position and pretence coupled with his romantic outlook convinced him that anything was possible, even this platonic love. The painful lesson learned that summer was that this was not the case, and never would be. The boy’s parents threatened Jones, and he never saw the youth again. The author continues by discussing his award-winning research-based film, Rufus Stone, and the reactions and conversations following screenings, particularly with youth. This present generation seems to Jones to be a sexually ambivalent one, more comfortable with multiple choices or no choice at all. Nonetheless, these young people do identify with the complexity of feelings and insecurities presented by youth within the film. Research limitations/implications In a recent report on sexuality of American high school students by the Center for Disease Control, researchers found an ambivalence and “dissonance” amongst youth regarding sexuality and choice. The author acknowledges that there remains a contemporary problem of genuine acceptance by society, and that there still is work to be done. He also admits that present-day attitudes by youth regarding sexuality are one that he had previously assumed to be historical ones. Originality/value Being straight or being gay can be viewed within the wider culture’s need to set up a sexual binary and force sexual “choice” decision-making for the benefit of the majority culture. Through the device of the fleeting moment, this essay hopes to interrogate the certainties and uncertainties of the “norms” of modernity by portraying sexuality in youth.

Abstract (sommario):
ObjectivesThe study aimed to estimate the prevalence of, and associations, with HIV and metrics of HIV care engagement in a representative population of gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men (GBMSM) and transgender persons (TP) who have sex with men (GBMSM/TP)SettingUrban districts of Nairobi, Kenya.DesignCross-sectional.Participants608 eligible participants were identified through respondent-driven sampling over 19 waves of recruitment arising from ten seeds between May and December 2017. Inclusion criteria were: age >18 years; Nairobi residence; male sex assignment at birth or current identification as male, and recent consensual sex with male partners. Exclusion criteria were: missing or invalid recruitment coupon; repeat registration; intoxication at study visit.Primary and secondary outcome measuresHIV status measured using Determine Alere HIV 1/2 and First Response HIV 1–2.0 and GeneXpert HIV-1 Qual. Self-reported metrics of HIV status awareness, antiretroviral use and objective quantification of viral suppression using GeneXpert HIV-1 VL.Results26.4% (286/618) were HIV positive of whom 76.6% were status aware, 65.3% were on antiretroviral therapy (ART), and 47.4% were virally suppressed (<50 copies/mL). Participants 18–22 years were less likely to be status aware, be receiving ART or to have achieved viral suppression. Mean log viral load was 3.14 log higher in 18–22 years compared with older participants. Bacterial sexually transmitted infections were common at both urethral and rectal sites and most infections were asymptomatic by self-report (rectal 82.2%, urethral 82.3%).ConclusionsEngagement in the HIV diagnosis and care cascade among GBMSM/TP in Nairobi is markedly better than in most sub-Saharan African countries, yet falls short of achievements for the general population in Kenya and for GBMSM in high income settings. Young GBMSM/TP are least well served by the current configuration of adult key population services, and programmes should identify and address the sexual, social and developmental needs of adolescent and young key populations.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract Background The “Undetectable = Untransmittable” (“U=U”) campaign is gaining traction, but prior studies from 2012–2017 have shown that the proportion of gay and bisexual men who have sex with men (GBMSM) who are aware of or have perceived accuracy of U=U is low. We report findings from a survey administered to GBMSM in 2018 to understand whether the landscape is changing with respect to U=U message dissemination. Methods GBMSM were recruited on gay dating apps to complete a 96 question survey. Survey data were collected in April-August of 2018. Collected data elements included demographic information, HIV status, ART and PrEP use, and beliefs and opinions regarding HIV transmission. Results 969 GBMSM completed the survey; of whom, 678 had analyzable data (241 had never had anal sex with a man and 54 were missing ≥1 of the variables used in the analysis). Average age was 43 years, 65% were white, 15% black, 15% white, and 15% were HIV-infected (of whom 92% were on anti-retrovirals). Of the 85% who were HIV-uninfected, 39% were on PrEP. In response to the statement that a person with an undetectable viral load cannot transmit HIV to an HIV-uninfected person, 24% strongly agreed. Among HIV-negative GBMSM, 33% of those on PrEP agreed and 12% of those not on PrEP agreed. Among those living with HIV, 42% agreed. A multivariable logistic regression was run to explain correlates of strong agreement with U=U, using the following variables: age, education, being Black, being Hispanic, relationship status, number of lifetime male sexual partners, condom use with most recent anal sex, HIV status, PrEP use, and attitudes about living with HIV. Variables associated with strong agreement with U=U were living with HIV (AOR = 1.63, P < 0.001), taking PrEP (AOR = 2.85, P < 0.001), most recent encounter’s condom use (AOR = 2.22, P = 0.003), and having positive attitudes about living with HIV (AOR= 1.93, P < 0.001). Table 1 shows percentages for each of these variables (bivariate relationships) strongly agreeing with U=U. Conclusion Now that U=U has been scientifically proven, the challenge is public awareness. U=U awareness seems to be improving among GBMSM, with HIV-negative GBMSM making the greatest strides. Education around U=U and PrEP efficacy may help reduce guilt around HIV transmission and alleviate HIV stigma. Disclosures All authors: No reported disclosures.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract. The film Kucumbu Body Indahku tells the life journey of a Lengger dancer named Juno in interpreting her body and gender philosophy. From the time Juno was interested in this type of art, he was educated at a dance studio near his home, when he was left by his father to work. Juno did not study for a long time at the studio, because his teacher was arrested as a result of a murder committed. After that, Juno stayed with his aunt, where he went back to school, while attending school Juno still deepened his dancing ability by attending extracurricular activities. His school period did not go well when Juno's teacher was arrested by residents for allegedly harassing Juno. The story continued until Juno grew up and worked as a tailor's assistant, where he put his heart to a male boxer who was his customer, until Juno was forced to have same-sex sex with a prospective regional head. From the background of the character, the researcher felt interested to raise the title of this film as a study by taking the gender construction of the film's character as a focus, besides that this film when it was released in the community experienced a number of controversial remarks. Many regions rejected this film because it was allegedly containing elements of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer (LGBTQ) in it. However, despite the accusations directed, this film received a good reception from the film community by winning several awards, and then entered the Academy Awards or Oscar nominations. This research uses a qualitative approach. The method used for analysis and interpretation is Roland Barthes's semiotics, where the codes are divided into three categories of analysis, namely connotation, denotation, and mythology. Then, to dissect the existing gender construction the researcher uses the queer theory as a reference, from the theory the researcher concludes three indicators of gender construction, namely body expression, the identity shown and sexual attraction.

Abstract (sommario):
Within this quotation the reader may find a rich description of historical and even contemporary Middle Eastern attitudes toward dance and male dancers in particular, penned from a native point of view. In this article I address those attitudes, but more importantly challenge several cherished, long-held assumptions and theoretical stances expressed by native elites and Westerners interested in Middle Eastern dance and dancers. First, I challenge the romantic views that many gay men hold that the presence of male dancers and the sexual interest expressed toward them by Middle Eastern men somehow constitutes evidence for an environment accepting of homosexuality and a Utopian gay paradise, where the possibility of unbridled sexual congress with handsome, passionately out-of-control Arabs, Persians, and Turks exists. Thus, they crucially confuse gay or homosexual identity with homosexual activity or behavior. Because of this confusion, I use an important aspect of queer theory that counters “the monolithic alternative of liberationist gay politics” (Bleys 1995, 7) to look at the phenomenon of professional male dancers in a somewhat grittier, more realistic light. In particular, I refer to Stephen O. Murray's groundbreaking article, “The Will Not to Know” (1997, 14–54) which establishes a valuable lens through which to view how the vast majority of Middle Eastern individuals regard homosexual acts.

Abstract (sommario):
Music as an art form of expression brings the inner side of an artist to the surface, and gives the world an insight of his vision. On the other hand, art is a conscious use of skill and creative imagination especially in the production of aesthetic objects or works. Music is a unique form of art and a lyrical and auditory representation of story. Thus, the study analyzed the patterns or themes of the five selected Gay Pride Playlists or songs such as I’m Coming Out, Born This Way, I Will Survive, True Colors, and Beautiful. The study found out three major themes and patterns that reflected in the five selected Gay Pride Playlists and entailed us to deepen our understanding about sexual orientation, and gender identity and expression. Furthermore, Gay Pride Playlists music, and music as an art, is made for expressing a free spirit that constitutes beauty.

Abstract (sommario):
This article discusses recent New Zealand homicide cases in which male defendants have sought to rely on the partial defence of provocation to excuse the killing of a man who allegedly made them the subject of unwanted sexual advances. The author argues that at least in cases in which such claims are unsuccessful, reference should be made to section 9(1)(h) of the Sentencing Act 2002, which renders homophobia an aggravating feature in sentencing. To the extent that section 9(1)(h) is not relied on, while provocation is successfully pleaded in some cases, the author concludes that gay male citizens are not afforded equal protection under the criminal law.

Abstract (sommario):
While it represents a common form of gender-based violence, misogyny is an often-overlooked concept within academia and the queer community. Drawing on queer and feminist scholarship on gay male misogyny, this article presents a theoretical challenge to the myth that the oppressed cannot oppress, arguing that specific forms of gay male subjectivities can be proponents of misogyny in ways that are unrecognised because of their sexually marginalised status. The authors’ interest in the doing of misogyny, and its effects on specific bodies and subjectivities, leads them to discuss the extent to which white gay male misogyny can function to reinforce a particular gender and racial hierarchy that continually confines queer femininities to the status of the abject other, for failing to exhibit their feminine credentials and for making gender trouble. The study also addresses how specific markers of femininity are depoliticised through the workings of this misogyny, exploring what femininity does when it is conceptualised outside a heteronormative framework. To address these ideas, the authors firstly propose a theoretical account of misogyny in order to understand its analytical status as a cultural mechanism within the psychic economy of patriarchy. Secondly, they use queer approaches to effeminacy and subject formation for making the case for gay male misogyny and its connections to femininity within white gay cultures, asking how misogyny might become an essential component of the performance of hegemonic masculinity. The article concludes with a discussion of the ways in which gay male misogyny reinforces white male dominance over women and queer femininities specifically, advocating for resistance to the reproduction of such patriarchal arrangements.

Abstract (sommario):
All-male pornography websites Czech Hunter, Debt Dandy and Dirty Scout rely on a fantasy of gay-for-pay sex in the Czech Republic. This article explores how these examples construct the ‘Eastern European’ gay-for-pay male and how such constructions are understood by viewers, drawing on discourse about Czech men and Czech pornography on online discussion forums. I argue that these examples of all-male pornography can be understood as expressing ‘exploitation themes’. The argument is made that such themes are the result of a residual attraction associated with the opening up of Eastern Europe to the West in the 1990s and that the promise of these sites is access to the (not-so-)newly available, particularly vulnerable, young men supposedly easily exploited by the money of Westerners.

AbstractSome politicians and pundits have decried President Obama's directive calling on the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to regulate greenhouse gas emissions (GHGs) from electric‐generating units (EGUs) as an end run around Congress, an executive usurpation of power, part of a “war on coal,” and an unwarranted extension of the Clean Air Act, a law they assert is unsuited to GHG regulation. Rhetoric aside, a substantial legal rationale supports the president's commitment.

Background:Ophthalmological involvement is one of the most feared manifestations of Behçet’s disease [1-6].Objectives:Our aim was to define the main demographic and clinical features of ophthalmological involvement in a well-defined cohort of patients with Behçet’s disease. Methods:Descriptive study of a cohort of 120 patients diagnosed with Behçet’s disease from January 1, 1980 to December 31, 2019. Finally, following the 2014 International Criteria for Behçet’s Disease (ICBD) (J Eur Acad Dermatol Venereol 2014; 28:338-47) 94 patients were chosen for this study.Results:50 patients (28 men/22 women; male to female ratio of 1:0.8) had ocular involvement. Mean age at diagnosis was 37.6±11.8 years. Mean ICBD score was 5.8±1.3 points. Neurological involvement was the most frequent manifestation in this group. Genital ulcers were more frequent in the non-ophthalmological involvement group. Systemic clinical domains are shown in Figure 1.The most frequent ocular manifestations were uveitis (n=44, 88.0%), retinal vasculitis (n=5, 10%) and dry eye (n=5, 10%). Likewise, the most frequent type of uveitis was anterior (n=17, 38.6%), followed by posterior uveitis (n=14, 31.8%). 26 (59.1%) of all uveitis were unilateral. Panuveitis was more frequent among patients under 60 years. Similarly, anterior uveitis was predominant in patients older than 70 years. There were no remarkable differences between genders. Abstract (sommario):
Introduction: Monitoring resistance to first line Antiretroviral therapy (ART) is crucial in preventing accumulation of viral mutations following the implementation of the World Health Organization “treat all” initiative. We estimated the rate and predictors of virological treatment failure among adults living with HIV/AIDS in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. Methodology: A retrospective cohort study involving adults aged 18 and above receiving first line ART in Dar as Salaam between 2016 and 2018 were recruited using multistage random sampling. Clinical and laboratory data were extracted from Care and Treatment Clinic database-2 (CTC2) followed by participant’s interviews. Adjusted Cox-regression modelling was used to determine independent predictors of treatment failure. Results: A total of 340 participants with mean age of 37 were recruited. Overall, 10.59% had virological failure and the rate of failure was 5.24 (95% CI:3.72; 7.27) per 100 person-months at risk with a median failure time of 18 months. Independent predictors of treatment failure were being a male (Adjusted hazard ratio (aHR) 2.78, 95%CI:1.16;6.63), having used treatment for less than two years (aHR, 12.48, 95%CI:3.64-22.71) and co-infection with Tuberculosis (aHR 2.1, 95%CI: 1.0;5.9). Conclusions: HIV virological failure occurs early during treatment in this population. Male clients, co-infected with Tuberculosis were at higher risk of ART failure within two years of treatment. Substantial stride has been made towards the achievement of the last UNAIDS 90 goal but tailored counseling and close monitoring of HIV/TB co-infected male clients following ART initiation could accelerate efforts to close the gap. Further studies on pre-treatment drug resistance mutations are called for.

In 2002, during Silicon Valley’s recovery after the dot-com crash and the recent push for sexual equality in the United States and across the globe, various media began pondering the question of what to do if TiVo “thinks you are gay.” Here, I analyze a King of Queens (1998–2007) episode and a The Mind of the Married Man (2001–2012) episode that center on this question and how they illustrate a sudden breakdown in sexual norms and identities even as they served to make TiVo’s personal video recorders (PVRs) and recommendation systems more attractive to the urban, liberal, and largely heterosexual viewer that TiVo desired. These narratives became deeply connected to TiVo’s identity in ways that made the PVR appear simultaneously transgressive and conventional—the birth of a new algorithmic culture and the furtherance of the television industry as status quo.

Abstract (sommario):
This article explores the status of R.C. Gorman (Navajo) within the art community of San Francisco, California, in the 1960s. Using Gorman’s personal papers, the article addresses how his queer identity, Navajo heritage, and Native urbanization contributed to his production of world-renowned art. Gorman’s representation of strong Navajo women, which made him a universally recognized artist, stemmed from his own exploration of gender performativity and homoeroticism while living in an urban gay mecca. Moreover, Gorman’s use of both resources in the city and the southwestern Indian art market allowed him to forge a successful art career. A formative figure in the Native American Fine Art Movement, Gorman’s experiences in San Francisco suggest that indigenous creative practices challenged a dominant interpretation and construction of the inferiority of American Indians.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract This paper explores what factors contribute to distinguishing gay sounding and straight man sounding speech; linguistic cognate or social knowledge and whether the gender of listeners also determines ability in identification. To answer these questions, 286 participants were classified by nationality into 3 groups of participants: Thai listeners as a control group, Zhuang, and Other listeners. They were asked to listen to 12 voice stimuli in Thai from straight and gay men and identify the gender of the speakers. The outcome revealed that the accuracy rate in identifying a speaker’s gender varied among the 3 groups of listeners with Thai listeners scoring the highest in gender identification, followed by the Others and Zhuang respectively. This indicates that social knowledge gained from one’s presence Thailand is more important than linguistic cognate. Gender identification may have been made based on the expectation of the ‘typical’ social scene such as the high visibility of gay men in Thailand. The results also suggest that gender of the listeners does not have a significant bearing on the ability to differentiate gay and straight male voices.

Abstract (sommario):
AbstractThis article is an ethnographic investigation of the labours of making art and selling liquid petroleum gas (LPG) in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe. It locates these activities within a shared social world, centred on one of Bulawayo's major art galleries, and it demonstrates that artists and LPG dealers use similar strategies to respond to the political conditions of life in the city. This article frames these conditions as unpredictable, insofar as they change frequently and crystallize in unexpected forms, and it argues that both groups are attempting to act within these conditions and shape them into emergent assemblages. In adopting this term ‘assemblage’, which has been elaborated theoretically by Gilles Deleuze, Félix Guattari and their many interlocutors, this article emphasizes both the mutability and the unpredictability of these formations. The artists who work in the gallery, for their part, make their art by assembling their chosen media. The processes by which they choose their media constitute assemblages as well, in that artists have to adapt their artistic visions to the materials that Zimbabwe's market can provide. Street dealers in gas also produce emergent assemblages against the backdrop of unpredictability. If they want to make natural gas available to consumers, dealers must shepherd their medium through an always emergent process of distribution. They participate in transnational networks of trade, but they also theorize innovative strategies of procurement, develop circuits of trust and loyalty, and conjure up visions of a predatory state. Like artists, they use their work to construct dynamic representations of the world around them. Artists may produce images, and dealers circulate gas, but this article shows that conceptualizing these practices in terms of ‘assemblages’ calls their commonalities into view. In doing so, it also demonstrates that these practices complicate easy distinctions between aesthetics, economics and politics.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract art as discussed in this essay covers a period of time that spans about sixty years. The introduction of the abstract art in Nepal marks a certain opening in both art education and practice among the artists. The initial challenge of the abstract art was to make it a familiar subject both among the art lovers as well as among those who respected art but were not able to appreciate it fully. A challenging period came when artists began to work towards making abstract art an acceptable and a very useful artistic practice. The tension between skill of the artists and the indifference of the public is a universal problem. But now the gap is being narrowed down everywhere. The concept of abstract art in Nepal comes from education in schools in Europe and India in the initial phase and later in Nepal itself where art pedagogy became a norm in different art schools and colleges. But artists freely made their paintings abstractas the commonly accepted mode of art. Artists of different generations execute abstract paintings without being critical or interpretative about it. But now things are changing in Nepal. New generation artists who are oriented to the abstract and free forms of art are working to develop a system by putting together the art education, practice and very importantly, the level of public acceptance for that. We should carefully review the history and the present status of that. We should also make the art works 'desirable'. The other important character of Nepali abstract painting is that the artists always work in the contact zones of the representational and the expressionist features. I have interpreted that meeting point as a contact zone. This article attempts to give examples of that dynamic process. Nepali abstract paintings mark a new mode of artistic dynamism in Nepal.

Abstract (sommario):
Objective: to investigate immunotropic activity of the argenine-containing neuropeptide compound Lys-Lys-Arg-Arg-Pro-Gly-Pro in conditions of "social" stress. Material and methods. The study was conducted on mongrel male rats of 6 months of age using a model of "social" stress based on the provision of permanent residence of animals in conditions of sensory contact, as a result of which submissive and aggressive types of behavior were formed. All animals were divided into groups: control I - rats who were in a cage one at a time and received water for injection in an equivalent volume; control II - groups of stressed animals with aggressive and submissive types of behavior; three groups of stressed rats were intraperitoneally injected with Lys-Lys-Arg-Arg-Pro-Gly-Pro at a dose of 100 mcg/kg/day and the comparison drug Imunofan (Arginyl-alpha-aspartyl-lysyl-valyl-thyrosyl-argininum) at an average therapeutic dose of 0.7 mcg/kg/day. The following indicators were evaluated: delayed hypersensitivity reaction index, antibody titer of direct hemagglutination reaction, phagocytic activity of peripheral blood neutrophils, leukocyte formula indicators. Results. The results obtained in the course of this study indicate that the arginine-containing neuropeptide compound Lys-Lys-Arg-Arg-Pro-Gly-Pro contributes to the correction of immune changes that occur against the background of exposure to chronic "social" stress, namely, an increase in the delayed hypersensitivity reaction index, the level of anti-erythrocyte antibodies, the total number of leukocytes and a decrease in phagocytic activity of peripheral blood neutrophils (phagocytic number and phagocytic index), as well as restoration of the percentage ratio of elements of the leukocyte formula. Conclusion. Thus, the study of the immunotropic activity of the argenine-containing neuropeptide compound Lys-Lys-Arg-Arg-Pro-Gly-Pro showed the presence of an immunocorrecting effect on the cellular and humoral links of immunity, which actualizes the need for a detailed study of the immune mechanisms of this compound.

Gay sex has been consistently hidden, censored and manipulated throughout the history of cinema. Rarely dealt with in mainstream cinema, it has nevertheless existed on the fringes of film consumption (art films, indies), reaching only small pockets of spectators. This essay aims to synthesize the presentation of gay sex in the film screen, dwelling first on both the spaces it is associated with and the movies that have attempted to show it, and then looking at several recent films (Weekend, Stranger by the Lake) that adopt different strategies to make it finally visible.

Abstract (sommario):
This research tried to identify the type of requests made by the students within a few Bangladeshi online classrooms. The study also aimed at focusing on possible gender differences between the students based on the requests they made. It adopted the research method used by Onem (2016), who investigated how men and women make requests and observed how they differ in the case of being polite and showing directness. Since there have been no previous studies conducted like this before, this paper analysed and categorized the types of requests by addressing the research gap. The theoretical framework relied on the Cross-Cultural Speech Act Realization Project (CCSARP), outlined by Blum-Kulka and Olshtain (1984). Three video records of online classes of “London School of English, Keraniganj, Dhaka, Bangladesh” were undertaken as the main data which was observed naturally followed by analysis and interpretation. The data analysis framework was also undertaken from the Cross-Cultural Speech Act Realization Project (CCSARP) theory by Blum-Kulka and Olshtain (1984). To analyse the data gathered from the videos, a particular coding scheme of (CCSARP) was used. The result obtained showed that the female students made around 62.5% requests while the male students did only around 37.5%. The requests made by the female students were not only significantly higher but they were more polite than the males. Therefore, this small-scale study is expected to help teachers and both male and female students improve their communication skills. The types of requests identified in this study might help students of both genders become aware of their request-making techniques and help the researchers understand the process of request-making in the students' minds.

Abstract (sommario):
Few studies of partnered gay men consider the social context within which sexual behaviors occur or investigate positive aspects of the social environment that may offset factors that are related to risky sexual behaviors. Fewer still include assessment of both individuals making up couples. Using an ecological framework and an actor-partner multilevel analysis approach, the authors investigate how three dimensions of gay community integration are related to individual sexual risk behavior among 108 individuals in 54 couples. They then investigate how general social support and partner-provided, HIV-specific social support moderate these relationships. An individual’s gay community social engagement and general social support interact to predict sexual risk behavior, such that the apparent protective effect of social support is more pronounced among those with less social engagement. The association between partner-reported general social support and safer sexual behaviors is more pronounced among those whose partners disclose their gay identity to more people.

Abstract (sommario):
The aim of this study was to investigate possible factors related to antiretroviral therapy (ART) that contribute to the understanding of the highest rate of Aids detection on the coast of the state of Paraná, a port region identified administratively as the 1st Regional Health Division (1st HD) in the state of Paraná. Data on the sociodemographic profile of the population undergoing antiretroviral treatment (ART), medication changes, dropout of therapy, proportion of the population undergoing treatment and viral load were obtained through computerized systems. Between July 1, 2018 and June 31, 2019, 1,393 people were on ART in the 1st RS. Of these, 57.6% were male. During this period, 110 people started ART with a predominance of the age group between 30 and 39 years old. ART was switched for 169 people and 211 patient dropouts were detected. The proportion of people diagnosed with HIV without treatment (gap) is still high, however 92.7% people on ART have suppressed viral load. It can be concluded that the lower educational level of the population undergoing treatment, the late diagnosis of those infected and the treatment gap probably contribute to the highest rate of Aids detection in the 1st RS.

Abstract (sommario):
Background In recent years, there has been increasing evidence that early initiation of antiretroviral therapy (ART) may provide health benefits for those infected with HIV. There has also been significant discussion about the role of HIV treatment in preventing onward transmission of the virus. Early provision and uptake of ART to people recently diagnosed with HIV could achieve both individual and public health outcomes. The success of such an initiative relies, in part, on the preparedness of those recently diagnosed with HIV to engage with the therapy. Methods: The HIV Seroconversion Study collects both quantitative and qualitative data from people in Australia who have recently been diagnosed with HIV. During 2011–2012, 53 gay or bisexual men recruited across Australia took part in semistructured interviews as part of the study. The men were asked about their knowledge and experience of, and their decisions about whether or not to commence, HIV treatment. Results: The interviews identified differing levels of knowledge about HIV treatments and divergent views about the health and prevention benefits of ART. For some, treatments provided a sense of control over the virus; others were apprehensive and distrustful, and preferred to resist commencing treatments for as long as possible. Conclusions: If early initiation of treatment is to be encouraged, appropriate measures must be in place to ensure recently diagnosed individuals have access to the appropriate information and the support they need to enable them to make informed choices and, if necessary, to address their fears.

Abstract (sommario):
This article draws on qualitative interviews with 40 gay male undergraduates at four universities across England to explore the dynamics of participants’ friendship networks in the context of decreased homophobia. Describing their schools and universities as gay-friendly spaces, most participants developed close friendships with both straight and sexual minority peers in spontaneous ways, away from institutional venues such as lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender student societies. Building on Bourdieu’s conceptualization of the symbolic economy of class, I introduce a new concept to understand how having a visible gay identity can act as a form of privilege in inclusive, post-gay social fields: gay capital. Through shared knowledge of gay cultures, belonging to gay social networks, and having one’s gay identity recognized as a form of prestige, gay capital supplements cultural, social, and symbolic forms of capital. These findings trouble traditional generalizations of gay youth as victimized due to their sexual minority status. However, finding that participants’ experiences differed across the four research settings, this article also develops an intersectional analysis by highlighting that access to gay capital is limited by other forms of class, gender, and sexual hierarchy.
