Abstract (sommario):
This dissertation is devoted to the study of fuzzy modal logics that formalise (paraconsistent) reasoning about uncertainty. The understanding of ‘uncertain information (data)’ here includes any combination of the following three characteristics. First, the information can be graded, i.e., the statement is equipped with a truth degree rather than a truth value. Second, the information can be incomplete. Third, the information can be contradictory. All the logics in question can be divided into two kinds. First, the more ‘traditional’ modal logics defined on [0,1]-valued Kripke models (possibly, with fuzzy accessibility relations) whose language includes modal operators interpreted as infima and suprema of values in the accessible states. The second kind of logics contains so-called ‘two-layered’ logics. In this framework, the language is divided into three parts: the inner layer, the outer layer, and the non-nesting modality. The idea is to use the inner-layer language to describe events, interpret the modality as a measure on the set of events (e.g., as a probability function, belief function, plausibility, etc.) corresponding to the degree of the agent's (un)certainty in a given event, and then reason about this (un)certainty in the outer-layer language. A frame in a two-layered logic is, thus, a set with a measure defined thereon. These two kinds of logics correspond to two ways of interpreting uncertainty. In the less formal one, we will be using the logics with the Kripke-frame semantics. In the more formal case where the degree of one's certainty or belief is assumed to behave as a concrete uncertainty measure, we will use the two-layered logics

Abstract (sommario):
According to Zadeh, the term “fuzzy logic” has two different meanings: wide and narrow. In a narrow sense it is a logical system which aims a formalization of approximate reasoning, and so it can be considered an extension of many-valued logic. However, Zadeh also says that the agenda of fuzzy logic is quite different from that of traditional many-valued logic, as it addresses concepts like linguistic variable, fuzzy if-then rule, linguistic quantifiers etc. Hájek, in the preface of his foundational book Metamathematics of Fuzzy Logic, agrees with Zadeh’s distinction, but stressing that formal calculi of many-valued logics are the kernel of the so-called Basic Fuzzy logic (BL), having continuous triangular norms (t-norm) and their residua as semantics for the conjunction and implication respectively, and of its most prominent extensions, namely Lukasiewicz, Gödel and Product fuzzy logics. Taking advantage of the fact that a t-norm has residuum if, and only if, it is left-continuous, the logic of the left-continuous t-norms, called MTL, was soon after introduced. On the other hand, classical modal logic is an active field of mathematical logic, originally introduced at the beginning of the XXth century for philosophical purposes, that more recently has shown to be very successful in many other areas, specially in computer science. That are the most well-known semantics for classical modal logics. Modal expansions of non-classical logics, in particular of many-valued logics, have also been studied in the literature. In this thesis we focus on the study of some modal logics over MTL, using natural generalizations of the classical Kripke relational structures where propositions at possible words can be many-valued, but keeping classical accessibility relations. In more detail, the main goal of this thesis has been to study modal expansions of the logic of a left-continuous t-norm, defined over the language of MTL expanded with rational truth-constants and the Monteiro-Baaz Delta-operator, whose intended (standard) semantics is given by Kripke models with crisp accessibility relations and taking the unit real interval [0, 1] as set of truth-values. To get complete axiomatizations, already known techniques based on the canonical model construction are uses, but this requires to ensure that the underlying (propositional) fuzzy logic is strongly standard complete. This constraint leads us to consider axiomatic systems with infinitary inference rules, already at the propositional level. A second goal of the thesis has been to also develop and automated reasoning software tool to solve satisfiability and logical consequence problems for some of the fuzzy logic modal logics considered. This dissertation is structured in four parts. After a gentle introduction, Part I contains the needed preliminaries for the thesis be as self-contained as possible. Most of the theoretical results are developed in Parts II and III. Part II focuses on solving some problems concerning the strong standard completeness of underlying non-modal expansions. We first present and axiomatic system for the non-nodal propositional logic of a left-continuous t-norm who makes use of a unique infinitary inference rule, the “density rule”, that solves several problems pointed out in the literature. We further expand this axiomatic system in order to also characterize arbitrary operations over [0, 1] satisfying certain regularity conditions. However, since this axiomatic system turn out to be not well-behaved for the modal expansion, we search for alternative axiomatizations with some particular kind of inference rules (that will be called conjunctive). Unfortunately, this kind of axiomatization does not necessarily exist for all left-continuous t-norms (in particular, it does not exist for the Gödel logic case), but we identify a wide class of t-norms for which it works. This “well-behaved” t-norms include all ordinal sums of Lukasiewiczand Product t-norms. Part III focuses on the modal expansion of the logics presented before. We propose axiomatic systems (which are, as expected, modal expansions of the ones given in the previous part) respectively strongly complete with respect to local and global Kripke semantics defined over frames with crisp accessibility relations and worlds evaluated over a “well-behaved” left-continuous t-norm. We also study some properties and extensions of these logics and also show how to use it for axiomatizing the possibilistic logic over the very same t-norm. Later on, we characterize the algebraic companion of these modal logics, provide some algebraic completeness results and study the relation between their Kripke and algebraic semantics. Finally, Part IV of the thesis is devoted to a software application, mNiB-LoS, who uses Satisfability Modulo Theories in order to build an automated reasoning system to reason over modal logics evaluated over BL algebras. The acronym of this applications stands for a modal Nice BL-logics Solver. The use of BL logics along this part is motivated by the fact that continuous t-norms can be represented as ordinal sums of three particular t-norms: Gödel, Lukasiewicz and Product ones. It is then possible to show that these t-norms have alternative characterizations that, although equivalent from the point of view of the logic, have strong differences for what concerns the design, implementation and efficiency of the application. For practical reasons, the modal structures included in the solver are limited to the finite ones (with no bound on the cardinality).

Abstract (sommario):
Two fuzzy controllers are presented. A fuzzy controller with intermediate variable designed for cascade control purposes is presented as the FCIV controller. An intermediate variable and a new set of fuzzy logic rules are added to a conventional Fuzzy Logic Controller (FLC) to build the Fuzzy Controller with Intermediate Variable (FCIV). The new controller was tested in the control of a nonlinear chemical process, and its performance was compared to several other controllers. The FCIV shows the best control performance regarding stability and robustness. The new controller also has an acceptable performance when noise is added to the sensor signal. An optimization program has been used to determine the optimum tuning parameters for all controllers to control a chemical process. This program allows obtaining the tuning parameters for a minimum IAE (Integral absolute of the error). The second controller presented uses fuzzy logic to improve the performance of the convention al internal model controller (IMC). This controller is called FAIMCr (Fuzzy Adaptive Internal Model Controller). Twofuzzy modules plus a filter tuning equation are added to the conventional IMC to achieve the objective. The first fuzzy module, the IMCFAM, determines the process parameters changes. The second fuzzy module, the IMCFF, provides stability to the control system, and a tuning equation is developed for the filter time constant based on the process parameters. The results show the FAIMCr providing a robust response and overcoming stability problems. Adding noise to the sensor signal does not affect the performance of the FAIMC.The contributions presented in this work include:The development of a fuzzy controller with intermediate variable for cascade control purposes. An adaptive model controller which uses fuzzy logic to predict the process parameters changes for the IMC controller. An IMC filter tuning equation to update the filter time constant based in the process paramete rs values. A variable fuzzy filter for the internal model controller (IMC) useful to provide stability to the control system.

Abstract (sommario):
The field of physical rehabilitation needs a quantitative technique for measuring dynamic gait stability (walking stability) to make decisions regarding treatment, assistive devices, potential for falls, and to track progress during rehabilitation. This measure should be easily applied in a clinical setting, valid across physical disabilities, and must provide a quantitative index that can be used for comparisons over a range of tasks and environments. This research project developed and evaluated a gait stability index using a portable pressure measurement system. This study examined current stability analysis methods and evaluated dynamic gait stability assessment parameters. Six gait parameters were identified and extracted from a commercial foot pressure measurement system (F-Scan). A fuzzy logic controller combined the six parameters and generated an index value. Fifteen healthy subjects were evaluated at four stability levels. All parameter combinations (57 indices in total) were assessed to isolate the most effective index.

Abstract (sommario):
Success in strategic management is not only based on the planning view for strategy formulation but also the need to consider strategy implementation. From a strategic planning view, this thesis identifies the six insufficiencies of strategic management: (a) strategy is implemented by means of people, whose behaviour cannot be determined by a plan; (b) strategy needs wide communication in an organization; (c) strategy formulation is separated from implementation; (d) the strategic planning process may contribute to only part of the organization; (e) planning neglects the dynamic environment and interactive influence of relationships; (f) performance measurement neglects qualitative data such as employee satisfaction, customer satisfaction and stakeholders’ performance (Kaplan and Norton, 2004). This research proposes a pluralistic approach –a six-view model consists of roots, stem, and flowers and fruits - the six-views, including logic and language, learning, cultural, political, ethical and planning views as the roots of critical systems thinking for promoting strategic management, which combines formulation and implementation with fuzzy logic by a robust planning, leadership style, participation of organizational members, and stakeholders’ cooperation to overcome the current deficiencies of the planning view particularly in line with the Taiwanese background. This six-views model is also called the “roots theory”, because the source of these views are organizational roots which range from leadership, a company culture built to cohere employees’ beliefs, engages wide communication in different departments, encourages team learning and innovative ideas, and has mutual trust with suppliers and customers, even stakeholders. The stems of the roots theory offers the foresight of a competitive environment with Five-forces analysis to identify the stage of the product life cycle in strategic business units (SBUs) for promoting supply chain operation. Performance evaluation identifies the results of strategy implementation, which includes employee satisfaction, customer satisfaction, and stakeholders’ performance as flowers and fruits of a tree. Effective strategic management results from combining the six-views because strategies fail when strategy is not implemented well (Bossidy and Charan, 2002; Joyce et al., 2003; Kim and Mauborgne, 2005; Kaplan and Norton, 2008). Neilson et al. (2008) point out that enterprises fail at execution because they go straight to structure reorganization and neglect the most powerful drivers of effectiveness - decision rights and information flow. The research was conducted in three interrelated phases. First, the nature of strategic management and different views of strategic management were identified by means of a literature review. Each view of strategic management was shown to be insufficient by Mintzberg’s (1987a) five Ps; and another P (partners’ expectations) came from this research for strategy formulation, so that an integrated thinking approach (Cummings and Daellenbach, 2009) incorporating six-views was needed for effective strategic management. Moreover, two tools of management such as critical systems thinking and fuzzy logic approaches were examined to assess how well they can promote strategic management in organizations. Second, a questionnaire was developed to unveil the current situations of strategic management and confirm the six-views model in Taiwanese companies. The questionnaire was sent to two hundred Taiwanese companies and produced sixty-three usable responses. The SAS package was employed to analyse the data. Simultaneously, senior managers were interviewed from seven manufacturing industries and eight service firms to discover the deeper concerns of strategic management in Taiwanese companies. Finally, four companies were selected as case studies to practically research, to support the interpretation of the results and to induct a novel model of strategic management. Some of the significant findings of the data analysis were that: factor analysis determined that the list of the six-views naturally separated into six distinct groups with Eigenvalue more than one; Duncan’s test showed that the overall companies in the learning, planning and six-views belonged to “Ranking A”. The six-views and the logic and language view were positioned in “Ranking B”. The logic language, cultural and ethical views belonged to “Ranking C”. The political view, however, was placed in “Ranking D” and it had a significantly lower rating compared with the other views. From multiple linear regression analysis, this research revealed that the priority order of significant influence variables were the cultural view, learning view, planning view, and logic and language view to promote strategic management and multi-collinearity was not severe. In fact, descriptive statistics and Eastern and Western management literature disclosed that the political and ethical views can contribute to effective strategic management. Therefore, this thesis applied six-views to promote strategy formulation and implementation. The multiple linear regression analysis of the six-views model disclosed that the six-views can be used as roots to enhance supply chain operation further to achieve better organizational performance in Taiwanese companies. The audit of the six-views by fuzzy logic found that the planning view is perceived as promoting the most effective strategy formulation; however, the integrated five-views for implementation is not strong enough to improve strategic management. Companies A1, A2, A3, and A4 possess strong six-views; they should adopt development strategy. The results of the test showed employee satisfaction, customer satisfaction, and stakeholders’ performancewhere employee satisfaction and customer satisfaction were directly correlated for four companies. In terms of characteristics of industry, the result of strategic management with the six-views linked to stakeholders’ performance with stakeholders’expectations and corporate social issues was consistent with a positive tendency as manufacturing industries, companies A1-A2, and service firms, companies A3-A4. In addition, it is worth mentioning that companies A1, A2 and A4 did not conduct an ideal social political arena of stakeholders’ groups when compared with company A3. In conclusion, the planning view has gained wide acceptance for Taiwanese companies wishing to successfully achieve strategy formulation, but implementation shows insufficiencies. Therefore, this research proposes the six-views model for complementing the lack of a planning view and expands existent theory of the planning view, highlighting the “people” for implementing strategy, especially as related to Taiwanese companies. The roots theory is based on both the theoretical reasoning and empirical evidence, that the analysis of the six-views should play a major role in promoting effective strategic management. The research findings are discussed and recommendations for further research are also proposed.

Abstract (sommario):
The past few years have witnessed a rapid growth in the use of fuzzy logic controllers for the control of processes which are complex and ill-defined. These control systems, inspired by the approximate reasoning capabilities of humans under conditions of uncertainty and imprecision, consist of linguistic 'if-then' rules which depend on fuzzy set theory for representation and evaluation using computers. Even though the fuzzy rules can be built from purely heuristic knowledge such as a human operator's control strategy, a number of difficulties face the designer of such systems. For any reasonably complex chemical process, the number of rules required to ensure adequate control in all operating regions may be extremely large. Eliciting all of these rules and ensuring their consistency and completeness can be a daunting task. An alternative to modelling the operator's response is to model the process and then to incorporate the process model into some sort of model-based control scheme. The concept of Model Based Predictive Control (MB PC) has been heralded as one of the most significant control developments in recent years. It is now widely used in the chemical and petrochemical industry and it continues to attract a considerable amount of research. Its popularity can be attributed to its many remarkable features and its open methodology. The wide range of choice of model structures, prediction horizon and optimisation criteria allows the control designer to easily tailor MBPC to his application. Features sought from such controllers include better performance, ease of tuning, greater robustness, ability to handle process constraints, dead time compensation and the ability to control nonminimum phase and open loop unstable processes. The concept of MBPC is not restricted to single-input single-output (SISO) processes. Feedforward action can be introduced easily for compensation of measurable disturbances and the use of state-space model formulation allows the approach to be generalised easily to multi-input multi-output (MIMO) systems. Although many different MBPC schemes have emerged, linear process models derived from input-output data are often used either explicitly to predict future process behaviour and/or implicitly to calculate the control action even though many chemical processes exhibit nonlinear process behaviour. It is well-recognised that the inherent nonlinearity of many chemical processes presents a challenging control problem, especially where quality and/or economic performance are important demands. In this thesis, MBPC is incorporated into a nonlinear fuzzy modelling framework. Even though a control algorithm based on a 1-step ahead predictive control strategy has initially been examined, subsequent studies focus on determining the optimal controller output using a long-range predictive control strategy. The fuzzy modelling method proposed by Takagi and Sugeno has been used throughout the thesis. This modelling method uses fuzzy inference to combine the outputs of a number of auto-regressive linear sub-models to construct an overall nonlinear process model. The method provides a more compact model (hence requiring less computations) than fuzzy modelling methods using relational arrays. It also provides an improvement in modelling accuracy and effectively overcomes the problems arising from incomplete models that characterise relational fuzzy models. Difficulties in using traditional cost function and optimisation techniques with fuzzy models have led other researchers to use numerical search techniques for determining the controller output. The emphasis in this thesis has been on computationally efficient analytically derived control algorithms. The performance of the proposed control system is examined using simulations of the liquid level in a tank, a continuous stirred tank reactor (CSTR) system, a binary distillation column and a forced circulation evaporator system. The results demonstrate the ability of the proposed system to outperform more traditional control systems. The results also show that inspite of the greatly reduced computational requirement of our proposed controller, it is possible to equal or better the performance of some of the other fuzzy model based control systems that have been proposed in the literature. It is also shown in this thesis that the proposed control algorithm can be easily extended to address the requirements of time-varying processes and processes requiring compensation for disturbance inputs and dead times. The application of the control system to multivariable processes and the ability to incorporate explicit constraints in the optimisation process are also demonstrated.

Abstract (sommario):
Inherent safety has been recognized as a design approach useful to remove or reduce hazards at the source instead of controlling them with add-on protective barriers. However, inherent safety is based on qualitative principles that cannot easily be evaluated and analyzed, and this is one of the major difficulties for the systematic application and quantification of inherent safety in plant design. The present research introduces the use of fuzzy logic for the measurement of inherent safety by proposing a hierarchical fuzzy model. This dissertation establishes a novel conceptual framework for the analysis of inherent safety and proposes a methodology that addresses several of the limitations of the methodologies available for current inherent safety analysis. This research proposes a methodology based on a hierarchical fuzzy model that analyzes the interaction of variables relevant for inherent safety and process safety in general. The use of fuzzy logic is helpful for modeling uncertainty and subjectivities implied in evaluation of certain variables and it is helpful for combining quantitative data with qualitative information. Fuzzy logic offers the advantage of being able to model numerical and heuristic expert knowledge by using fuzzy IF-THEN rules. Safety is traditionally considered a subjective issue because of the high uncertainty associated with its significant descriptors and parameters; however, this research recognizes that rather than subjective, "safety" is a vague problem. Vagueness derives from the fact that it is not possible to define sharp boundaries between safe and unsafe states; therefore the problem is a "matter of degree". The proposed method is computer-based and process simulator-oriented in order to reduce the time and expertise required for the analysis. It is expected that in the future, by linking the present approach to a process simulator, process engineers can develop safety analysis during the early stages of the design in a rapid and systematic way. Another important aspect of inherent safety, rarely addressed, is transportation of chemical substances; this dissertation includes the analysis of transportation hazard by truck using a fuzzy logic-based approach.

Abstract (sommario):
The development of an autonomous system capable of matching human knowledge and learning capabilities embedded in a compact yet transparent way has been one of the most sought milestones of Artificial Intelligence since the invention of the first mechanical general purpose computers. Such accomplishment is yet to come but, in its pursuit, important contributions to the state-of-the-art of current technology have been made. Fuzzy Logic is one of such, supporting some of the most used frameworks for embedding human-like knowledge in computational systems. The theory of Fuzzy Logic overcame some of the difficulties that the inherent uncertainty in information representations poses to the development of computational systems. However, it does present some limitations so, aiming to further extend its capabilities, several improvements over its original formalization have been proposed over the years such as Type-2 Fuzzy Logic - one of its most recent advances. The additional degrees of freedom of Type-2 Fuzzy Logic are showing greater potential to supplant its original counterpart, especially in complex non-linear modeling tasks. One of its main outcomes is its capability of improving the developed model’s robustness without necessarily increasing its dimensionality comparatively to a Type-1 Fuzzy Model counterpart. Such feature is particularly advantageous if one considers these model as a support for developing control systems capable of maintaining a process’s optimal performance over changing operating conditions. However, state-of-the art model-based control theory does not seem to be taking full advantage of the improvements achieved with the development of Type-2 Fuzzy Logic based models. Therefore, this thesis proposes to address this problem by developing a Model Predictive Control system supported by Interval Type-2 Takagi- Sugeno Fuzzy Models. To accomplish this goal, four main research directions are covered in this work.Firstly, a simpler method for training a Type-2 Takagi-Sugeno Fuzzy Model focused on two main paradigms is proposed: maintaining a meaningful interpretation of the uncertainty intervals embedded over an estimated Type-1 Fuzzy Model; ensuring the validity of several locally linear models that constitute the Takagi-Sugeno structure in order to make them suitable for model-based control approaches. Based on the developed model, a multi-step ahead estimation of the process behavior is extrapolated. However, as Takagi-Sugeno Fuzzy Models establish a trade-off between accuracy and computational complexity when used as a non-linear process approximation, it is proposed to apply the principles of Type-2 Fuzzy Logic to reduce the influence of modeling uncertainties on the obtained estimations by adjusting the model parameters’ uncertainty intervals. Supported by the developed Type-2 Takagi-Sugeno Fuzzy Model, a locally linear approximation of each current operation point is used to obtain the optimal control law over a prediction horizon according to the principles of Generalized Predictive Control - one of the most used Model Predictive Control algorithms in Industry. The improvements in terms of closed loop tracking performance and robustness to unmodeled operation conditions are then assessed comparatively to Generalized Predictive Control implementations based on simpler modeling approaches. Ultimately, the proposed control system is implemented in a general purpose System-on-a-Chip based on a ARM Cortex-M4 core. A Processor-In-the-Loop testing framework, developed to support the implementation of control loops in embedded systems, is used to evaluate the algorithm’s turnaround time when executed in such computationally constrained platform, assessing its possible limitations before deployment in real application scenarios. The applicability of the new methods introduced in this thesis is illustrated in two simulated processes commonly used in non-linear control benchmarking: the Temperature Control of a Fermentation Reactor and the Liquid Level Control of a Coupled Tanks System. It is shown that the developed control system achieves an improved closed loop performance of the above mentioned processes, particularly in the cases of quick changes in the operation regime and in presence of unmeasured external disturbances.

Abstract (sommario):
This master thesis deals with the virtual gate position and liquid level control system. The main characteristics of automatic control systems, fuzzy logic systems, their properties and formation principles are reviewed. Conventional and advanced control methods are presented pointing out their benefits, drawbacks and problems to be solved. Physical modelling and simulation issues are also discussed. Physical, mathematical, simulation and animation models of the system are produced. Position and level controllers are designed. The simulation of gate position and liquid level control processes is performed. The simulation model is built up using MATLAB Simulink and Fuzzy Logic Toolbox. The simulation results prove that the proportional controller fits very well for controlling gate position. However, the results of liquid level control “upwards” using PI controller are only satisfactory. Unsatisfactory results are obtained using the same controller for liquid level control “downwards”. Substantially better results are achieved using fuzzy logic controller. The models produced can be useful for further investigations and learning purposes.

Abstract (sommario):
Complex systems typically display emergent dynamic behaviors, which cannot be outlined by a mere description of their constituting parts. Such systems are ubiquitous in natural and artificial settings, ranging from biology and physics, to engineering and economics, and spark the interest of many scientists belonging to different research fields. To gain better insights on their inner working, complex systems are studied by means of computational methods, which allow to model and reproduce their behavior in silico. As a consequence, several mathematical formalisms were developed in the last decades to model complex systems, capture different features of their dynamic behavior, and leverage any available quantitative or qualitative data about their components. The aim of this thesis is to show how fuzzy logic can be exploited to overcome some of the limitations that still affect the modeling of complex systems, namely: predict emergent dynamic behaviors even when there is a lack of precise quantitative information; deal with the presence of heterogeneous systems components, spanning different levels of temporal, spatial of functional organization; bridge the gap between quantitative and qualitative modeling, in order to define hybrid models that can simultaneously exploit the peculiar advantages provided by both approaches. The novel modeling frameworks presented in this thesis based on fuzzy logic have been employed to analyze the behavior of two real world systems, in the context of cellular biology. The results show that the developed frameworks correctly reproduce the behavior of complex systems and assess their response to perturbations, even when quantitative information is missing or some system components are not fully characterized. These frameworks could find applications in several fields, including, but not limited to, biology, medicine and pharmacology, which often face such challenges.

Abstract (sommario):
This work explains the fundamental definitions required to define and create Fuzzy Identity-Based Encryption schemes as an error-tolerant version of Identity-Based Encryption schemes, along with three different examples of such creations. These examples are Sahai-Waters' FIBE, Baek et al.'s EFIBE-I and EFIBE-II. The required Set-up, Key Generation, Encryption and Decryption algorithms for each scheme are formalized and the proofs of security using the Selective-ID model are introduced. Subtle differences between the three schemes are discussed, including their computational efficiency comparison. The writing is intended as a self-sufficient resource for readers, containing the schemes and background definitions.

Abstract (sommario):
This thesis deals with the design of fuzzy system that can evaluate supplier of spare parts for service. The result should be applicable to a company Iveta Šťastníková - car and tire service. Primarily it should simplify operations associated with the selection of appropriate spare parts, tools and other equipment needed to operate with car service station. First, we introduce the theoretical basis for the paper, and then we go to the present state and the analysis itself. The result is a proposed solution which should correspond to the needs of the owner.
