After neglecting the temporal aspect of social groups for a long time, a growing body of research in social psychology now apprehends groups as entities that move through time and suggests that people’s representations of the collective past and future, in addition to being continuously (re)constructed according to the present, are relevant for understanding current collective behaviours. This new line of research has recently led to the idea of a collective mental time travel (CMTT) -i.e., the collective equivalent of individual mental time travel, that would gather the cross-influences between people’s representations of the group’s present, past, and future. This thesis aimed to examine the dynamics and consequences of these CMTT in light of perceived societal anomie -i.e., perceiving that current society is disintegrated and disregulated. Through nine correlational and experimental studies, we found that perceiving anomie within current society (a) lead individuals to reinterpret the national past (e.g., even more positive representations of the former French president Charles de Gaulle) (b) fostered the projection of negative, anxiety-inducing national futures and (c) influenced the relationships between people’s representations of the national past and future (e.g., declinist representations of the nation across time that were steeper when current society was perceived as highly anomic). Moreover, these CMTT were in turn associated with people’s current support for and intention to engage in various types of actions aimed at defending France (including anti-immigration actions)

The study we have undertaken is an attempt to understand how members of Brazilian society consider themselves and their social organization. To achieve this, we carried out an analysis of the Brazilian presidential elections of 1998, taking the act of voting as a social duty illustrative of the social values of the members of this society. We suggest that it is imaginary significations which influence electoral decisions, in attributing political legitimacy to one candidate rather than another. The winning candidate who is seen as the authentic holder of socially valued characteristics becomes the symbol of the nation par excellence. Among the characteristics which contribute to his political legitimacy is that of being a modern icon, who will lead his country towards a greater future in accordance with the dominant political values. We consider that the candidate participates in this way in the construction of an official society which would allow the country to be included in the league of democratic nations, which nevertheless present enormous differences with the practices of the main political figures in Brazil, including the exclusion of subordinates from any kind of decision-making. Brazilian electors, believing they had elected a candidate who would lead Brazil to its glorious future, maintain, paradoxically, the link with the country's colonial past. We regard this paradox as one of the greatest dilemma of Brazilian society, as it is by means of this process of political legitimazation tha a socially unequal structure is sustained despite the internal dynamism of its institutions
