Abstract (sommario):
This paper study explains about some fundamental theories of Critical Discourse Analysis such as focus on dominance relations by elite groups and institutions as they are being ordained and the overt sociopolitical stance of discourse analysis. Context social structure: Situations of discursive interaction are similarly part or constitutive of social structure; for example, a press conference may be a typical repetition of organizations and media institutions. That is, “local” and more “global” contexts are closely related, and both exercise constraints on discourse. Personal and social cognition: Language users as social actors have both personal and social cognition: personal memories, knowledge and opinions, as well as those shared with members of the group or culture as a whole. Both types of cognition influence interaction 006 and discourse of individual members, whereas shared “social representations” govern the collective actions of a group.

Abstract (sommario):
AbstractThe following article is based on the MRS Medal talk by Norm Bartelt (Sandia National Laboratories, California), presented at the 2001 Materials Research Society Fall Meeting on November 29 in Boston. Bartelt received the Medal for his “contributions to the statistical mechanics of materials surfaces.” A long-standing goal of materials science research has been to predict the long-term evolution of the microstructure of materials from a knowledge of atomic processes. This is usually extremely difficult to do in any detail because of the large number of atomic processes to consider, many of which are poorly understood. On solid surfaces, however, progress in the prediction of microstructural evolution can now be made because of advances in real-time microscopy that allow the characterization of the time evolution of microstructure in unprecedented detail. These observations directly reveal the complex relationships between collective thermal fluctuations on atomic scales and deterministic behavior on macroscopic scales. In this presentation, attempts to construct models of these observations are discussed.

Schorvitz, Eric Burton 1971. "Experimental tests of fundamental economic theories". Diss., The University of Arizona, 1998. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/288813.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Chapter one of this dissertation provides an experimental test of a joint hypothesis implied by the constant relative risk averse model of first price sealed bid auction theory and standard risk preference theory. This test will be used to determine whether observed risk attitude is solely a characteristic of the individual (as conventional economic theory has it) or jointly a characteristic of the individual and the environment (as some cognitive psychologists maintain). It also presents a simple adjustment to first price auction experiments which causes "throw away" bidding behavior to be dramatically decreased and makes empirical estimation more precise. Standard theoretical search models assume that agents behave as if they search optimally. The second chapter of this dissertation reports the experimental results of a test of whether agents maximize their payouts by optimally searching for the best of n candidates in what has been called the "Secretary Problem." The novelty of this design is that the optimal search rule is invariant to agents' risk attitudes. This is made possible by implementing a binary payout schedule in which stopping at the best candidate pays a positive amount and stopping at any other candidate pays nothing. On average, subjects chose the best candidate slightly less often than an optimal searcher, while the El-Gamal and Grether (1995) estimation procedure suggests that subjects were either using a sub-optimal rule or just randomly guessing.

MAX, Kevin. "Beyond the Standard Theories of Fundamental Interactions". Doctoral thesis, Scuola Normale Superiore, 2021. http://hdl.handle.net/11384/104450.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Beyond the Standard Theories of Fundamental Interactions. The status quo of fundamental physics is the Standard Model (SM) of particle physics and General Relativity (GR). While both theories separately are able to describe a wide range of phenomena in their respective domain to high accuracy, there are problems which arise solely when the two are coupled. Examples include the cosmological constant problem, baryogenesis or the absence of a suitable dark matter (DM) candidate in the SM. In this thesis, several solutions are presented and discussed. One is Bimetric Gravity, a modification of GR which breaks the assumption that one single, massless spin-2 object acts as its force carrier. Original results are presented on the phenomenology of the massive graviton, where we analyse the modified propagation of gravitational waves and set competitive bounds on the graviton mass. Furthermore, the cosmological history of the model is investigated, incorporating data from baryon acoustic oscillations, quasars, supernovae and the cosmic microwave background. As a competing theory, we review Conformal Gravity, which is put to the same cosmological tests. A complementary approach to the solution of the DM problem is a Dark Sector beyond the SM. We motivate and present a detailed analysis of the physics of Dark Sectors, which obey an approximate scale invariance. Using effective field theory techniques and properties of operators fixed by conformal symmetry, we are able to put model-independent bounds on a class of Dark Sectors. Their phenomenology is tested against a large array of terrestrial and celestial observations.

Abstract (sommario):
A doctorate thesis proposal about the fundamental human rights theories and methods of interpretation demands one propaedeutic investigation of the basilar premises. The fundamental human rights must be investigated from a conceptual analysis which objective is to dissipate the meaningful concepts and establish the terminological precision of the researched theme. Secondly, the conceptual delimitation should be historically expanded as a fundamental theory debate for the comprehension of the classical liberal guarantees. The fundamental human rights theories and methods of interpretation lay its origin in the German and Spanish rights, having as secondary sources the contributions which have come from the American and French traditions. It is scientific relevant the reception of these theories and methods of interpretation for the fundamental human rights interpretation in Brazil, as long as there isn`t a transposition out of critic from foreign methodologies, without the consequent acknowledgement of the inherent peculiarities for the present values in the Brazilian constitutionalism.

Allard-Tremblay, Yann. "Epistemic theories of democracy, constitutionalism and the procedural legitimacy of fundamental rights". Thesis, University of St Andrews, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/10023/3465.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
The overall aim of this thesis is to assess the legitimacy of constitutional laws and bills of rights within the framework of procedural epistemic democracy. The thesis is divided into three sections. In the first section, I discuss the relevance of an epistemic argument for democracy under the circumstances of politics: I provide an account of reasonable disagreement and explain how usual approaches to the authority of decision-making procedures fail to take it seriously. In the second part of the thesis, I provide an account of the epistemic features of democracy and of the requirements of democratic legitimacy. I develop a revised pragmatist argument for democracy which relies on three presumptive aims of decision-making: justice, sustainability and concord. In the third and last section, I first argue for the desirability of constitutionalism. I then explain why constitutionalism, as it is usually understood, is incompatible with my procedural epistemic account of democratic legitimacy. In the last chapter, I offer a two-pronged solution to the apparent incompatibility of constitutionalism and epistemic democracy. I first argue for the appropriateness of political constitutionalism, as opposed to legal constitutionalism, in understanding the relationship between rights and democracy. I then provide an account of rights protection and judicial review compatible with epistemic democratic legitimacy. Finally, I use the notion of pragmatic encroachment to explain how constitutional laws can achieve normative supremacy through the increased epistemic credentials of the procedure.

Fletcher, Jeffrey Alan. "Fundamental Conditions for the Evolution of Altruism: Towards a Unification of Theories". PDXScholar, 2004. https://pdxscholar.library.pdx.edu/open_access_etds/1881.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
In evolutionary theory the existence of self-sacrificing cooperative traits poses a problem that has engendered decades of debate. The principal theories of the evolution of altruism are inclusive fitness, reciprocal altruism, and multilevel selection. To provide a framework for the unification o f these apparently disparate theories, this dissertation identifies two fundamental conditions required for the evolution of altruism: 1) non-zero-sum fitness benefits for cooperation and 2) positive assortment among altruistic behaviors. I demonstrate the underlying similarities in these three theories in the following two ways. First, I show that the game-theoretic model of the prisoner’s dilemm a (PD) is inherent to all three theories. While the PD has been used extensively to model reciprocal altruism, I demonstrate that the n-player PD captures fundamental aspects o f multilevel selection and inclusive fitness in that NPD model parameters relate simply to Simpson’s paradox, the Price covariance equation, and Hamilton’s rule. The tension between hierarchical levels that defines a PD reflects the tension between Abstract levels o f selection that is explicit in multilevel selection theory, and im plicit in the other two theories. Second, Ham ilton’s rule from inclusive fitness theory applies to the other theories. As mentioned, I demonstrate that this rule relates to multilevel selection via the NPD. I also show that Queller’s generalization of Hamilton’s rule applies to the conditional strategies of reciprocal altmism. This challenges the selfish-gene viewpoint by highlighting the fact that it is the phenotypes o f others, not their genotypes, that is critical to the evolution o f altruism. I integrate the PD and H am ilton’s rule as follows: the evolution o f altruism in general involves PD situations in which Hamilton’s rule specifies the necessary relationship between 1) the degree of non-zero-sumness within the PD and 2) the degree of positive assortment among altruistic behaviors. Additional contributions of this research include a demonstration that randomly formed associations can provide the necessary positive assortment for strong altruism to evolve, the development of a new selection decomposition that is symmetrical to the Price equation, and a game-theoretic analysis showing the essential similarity of weak and strong altruism under selection.

Abstract (sommario):
The finite case of 1-gauge topological theories, when no global symmetries are present, is fairly well understood and classified. In recent years, attempts to generalize the latter situation through the so called 2-gauge theories have opened the door to interesting new models and new topological phases, not described by the previous schemes of classifica- tion. In this paper we go even beyond the 2-gauge construction by considering a class of models that live in arbitrary higher dimensions. These models are embedded in a structure of chain complexes of abelian groups, forcing to generalize the usual notion of gauge configurations. The advantage of such an approach is that, the topological order is explicitly manifest when the ground state space of these models is described. This is done in terms of a cohomology with coefficients in a finite chain complex. Furthermore, we show that the ground state degeneracy underpins a convenient set of quantum num- bers that label the states and that have been completely characterized. We also show that abelian examples of 1-gauge 2-gauge theories are recovered as special cases of this construction.

Abstract (sommario):
This thesis addresses a research programme that aimed to provide an open standard methodology for publishing Brazilian local primary school atlases on the World Wide Web. It also aims to contribute to the use of computer laboratories provided to Brazilian primary schools by the Brazilian government. Using a local school atlas as the source of information, a Web-based prototype of the School Atlas of Rio Claro (SP) was developed in SVG (Scalable Vector Graphics). SVG is a vector-based standard for publishing interactive graphics on the Web validated by the Web Consortium. This prototype was tested with a group of Brazilian primary school teachers. The test was conducted with fourteen teachers, all of them were familiar with the paper version of the School Atlas. During weekly meetings, the participants took notes to discuss and reflect about the practices held in school with local maps. The main test carried out with teachers was to prepare a paper activity based on the atlas content. The idea behind this activity was to foster teachers to leave a passive role as mere users and interact with the product in a more active fashion. In order to enable them to take full advantage of simple digital tools they were briefly trained to capture screen, use image editing software (they were instructed on the use of Paint, an image editing application available in Windows), and to copy text from the atlas. The results demonstrated that the teachers were keen to interact with the product and, although reproducing some common practices of paper atlas use, they revealed a deep interest on the use of the Internet as a medium for education and the prototype itself. A second test was carried out with a group of atlas developers. They were given a time frame of two weeks to develop an SVG-based atlas using the methodology proposed in this research. They completed the task within the time frame proposed however they indicated that more specific training should be desirable; this finding indicates the need to introduce digital map publishing as a subject to be taught in geosciences undergraduate courses in Brazil. It is believed that open standard methodology proposed here can be applied to other cities also developing local atlases for early geographical education.

Ireland, Lewis George. "Stellar models with magnetism and rotation : mixing length theories and convection simulations". Thesis, University of Exeter, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/10871/34350.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Some low-mass stars appear to have larger radii than predicted by standard 1D structure models; prior work has suggested that inefficient convective heat transport, due to rotation and/or magnetism, may ultimately be responsible. In this thesis, we explore this possibility using a combination of 1D stellar models, 2D and 3D simulations, and analytical theory. First, we examine this issue using 1D stellar models constructed using the Modules for Experiments in Stellar Astrophysics (MESA) code. We begin by considering standard models that do not explicitly include rotational/magnetic effects, with convective inhibition modelled by decreasing a depth-independent mixing length theory (MLT) parameter αMLT. We provide formulae linking changes in αMLT to changes in the interior specific entropy, and hence to the stellar radius. Next, we modify the MLT formulation in MESA to mimic explicitly the influence of rotation and magnetism, using formulations suggested by Stevenson (1979) and MacDonald and Mullan (2014) respectively. We find rapid rotation in these models has a negligible impact on stellar structure, primarily because a star’s adiabat, and hence its radius, is predominantly affected by layers near the surface; convection is rapid and largely uninfluenced by rotation there. Magnetic fields, if they influenced convective transport in the manner described by MacDonald and Mullan (2014), could lead to more noticeable radius inflation. Finally, we show that these non-standard effects on stellar structure can be fabricated using a depth-dependent αMLT: a non-magnetic, non-rotating model can be produced that is virtually indistinguishable from one that explicitly parameterises rotation and/or magnetism using the two formulations above. We provide formulae linking the radially-variable αMLT to these putative MLT reformulations. We make further comparisons between MLT and simulations of convection, to establish how heat transport and stellar structure are influenced by rotation and magnetism, by looking at the entropy content of 2D local and 3D global convective calculations. Using 2D “box in a star” simulations, created using the convection code Dedalus, we investigate changes in bulk properties of the specific entropy for increasingly stratified domains. We observe regions stable against convection near the bottom boundary, resulting in the specific entropy in the bulk of the domain exceeding the bottom boundary value: this could be a result of physical effects, such as increased amounts of viscous dissipation for more supercritical, highly stratified cases, but may also be influenced by the artificial boundary conditions imposed by these local simulations. We then turn to 3D global simulations, created using the convection code Rayleigh, and investigate these same properties as a function of rotation rate. We find the average of the shell-averaged specific entropy gradient in the middle third of the domain to scale with rotation rate in a similar fashion to the scaling law derived via MLT arguments in Barker et al. (2014), i.e., |⟨ds/dr⟩| ∝ Ω^4/5.

Abstract (sommario):
The article continues, for the first time in English in domestic science, to study the question of the need to create a new scientific theory – the theory of mass information. For the first time too raises the question of creating, in a place of the current theory of mass communication, a system of sciences including: a) mass information (shpuld be created now in rpoh of mass information), b) the theory of mass understanding (has created as a hermeneutics of the masses), c) the theory of mass communication (has created as a theory of the transfer of content) and the theory of mass emotions (started to create in 2017). This is a paradoxical situation – the absence of fundamental theory of mass information in the epoch of mass information. Researches in the scientific works of foreign mass communication also showed the absence of a holistic theory, as well as attempts to create it, even the lack of decisions on the need to create it as a new scientific field.

Pompeu, Gustavo, e José Luiz Rossi. Real/Dollar Exchange Rate Prediction Combining Machine Learning and Fundamental Models. Inter-American Development Bank, settembre 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.18235/0004491.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
The study of the predictability of exchange rates has been a very recurring theme on the economics literature for decades, and very often is not possible to beat a random walk prediction, particularly when trying to forecast short time periods. Although there are several studies about exchange rate forecasting in general, predictions of specifically Brazilian real (BRL) to United States dollar (USD) exchange rates are very hard to find in the literature. The objective of this work is to predict the specific BRL to USD exchange rates by applying machine learning models combined with fundamental theories from macroeconomics, such as monetary and Taylor rule models, and compare the results to those of a random walk model by using the root mean squared error (RMSE) and the Diebold-Mariano (DM) test. We show that it is possible to beat the random walk by these metrics.

Bunse, Simone, Caroline Delgado e Marie Riquier. Towards Humanitarian Action that Intentionally Promotes Peace in South Sudan. Stockholm International Peace Research Institute, giugno 2024. http://dx.doi.org/10.55163/rdez3422.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Humanitarian action that promotes peace and addresses the causes of conflict is vital for food security and community resilience in South Sudan. In Upper Nile state, the South Sudan Red Cross (SSRC) has the potential to promote peaceful coexistence and social cohesion, although the peace impacts of its Humanitarian Response (HR) Project are currently unintentional. This paper proposes four theories of change for intentional peacebuilding: The first relates to livelihood opportunities and keeping children in school. The second concerns the connectedness between diverse ethnicities and communities through conflict-sensitive volunteerism. The third consists in helping socialized programme volunteers transition into leadership roles for greater transformational impacts. The fourth involves vertical and horizontal integration with broader development and peacebuilding efforts. Social cohesion could increase if the HR Project has measurable impact in these four areas. This paper provides actionable recommendations that would strengthen the SSRC’s peacebuilding impact while upholding the fundamental principles of the Red Cross and Red Crescent movement.

Соловйов, Володимир Миколайович, V. Saptsin e D. Chabanenko. Financial time series prediction with the technology of complex Markov chains. Transport and Telecommunication Institute, 2010. http://dx.doi.org/10.31812/0564/1145.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
In this research the technology of complex Markov chains, i.e. Markov chains with a memory is applied to forecast financial time-series. The main distinction of complex or high-order Markov chains [1] and simple first-order ones is the existing of after effect or memory. The high-order Markov chains can be simplified to first-order ones by generalizing the states in Markov chains. Considering the “generalized state” as the sequence of states makes a possibility to model high-order Markov chains like first-order ones. The adaptive method of defining the states is proposed, it is concerned with the statistic properties of price returns [2]. According to the fundamental principles of quantum measurement theories, the measurement procedure impacts not only on the result of the measurement, but also on the state of the measured system, and the behaviour of this system in the future remains undefined, despite of the precision of the measurement. This statement, in our opinion, is general and is true not only for physical systems, but to any complex systems [3].

Abstract (sommario):
This text brings together four essential book reviews for professionals and students interested in acoustics, vibrations, and audio. The selected works range from fundamental principles to advanced applications, offering a comprehensive overview of subjects such as signal processing, microphone arrays, architectural acoustics, and practical studies. The first work, Concert Halls and Opera Houses: Music, Acoustics and Architecture by Leo Beranek, explores the relationship between musical art and the design of performance venues, highlighting how acoustics directly affects the listener’s experience. Next, Acoustic Array Systems: Theory, Implementation, and Application by Mingsian R. Bai, Jeong-Guon Ih, and Jacob Benesty, delves into microphone array technologies, examining beamforming theories and their practical applications. The third reference, Architectural Acoustics by Marshall Long, focuses on the principles of room planning and acoustic treatment, allowing greater control over noise and reverberations in different environments. Finally, Acoustics – A Textbook for Engineers and Physicists (Vols. I & II) by Jerry H. Ginsberg presents a comprehensive compendium on acoustics and vibrations, combining theory, computational modeling, and experiments. These concise and objective reviews provide initial insights into each author’s contributions, encouraging the complete reading of the works for a solid and up-to-date education in the field of acoustics.
