Abstract (sommario):
Technological change and development have been ongoing in the motion picture industry since its beginnings some 125 years ago. What further advancements of digitalization can be expected over the next decade and what are its implications for the industry’s value chain? To answer this question, we conducted an international two-stage Delphi study. The results suggested a more frequent use of smartphones as cameras, the emergence of full digital film sets and digital star avatars, as well as advancements in VR-based and interactive movies. The findings imply challenges for traditional players in the motion picture value chain. Production technology becomes both simpler and more complex, leading to the threat of new entrants.

Abstract (sommario):
In this paper a continuation of the previous research has been presented. A simulation of a vehicles acceleration in various road conditions but without a drivers control has been taken into account. The main aim of this paper was to answer the question whether the random road conditions could affect the vehicle while accelerating while a driver cannot control the direction of its motion. The three various maximum amplitudes of the irregularities for both the dry and the icy road surface were used. Almost different road profiles were also adopted for the analyzed maneuver, which defines a specific coefficient. Apart from no control of the vehicle the initial speed was set to 5 km/h and after 1 s the vehicle started to accelerate. The time of reaching the full throttle (100%) was only 0.25 s which provided a rapid acceleration. The simulation time was 10 s.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract We introduce self-consistent spin, tidal, and dynamical equations of motion into REBOUNDx, a library of additional effects for the popular N-body integrator REBOUND. The equations of motion used are derived from the constant time lag approximation to the equilibrium tide model of tidal friction. These effects will allow the study of a variety of systems of which the full dynamical picture cannot be encapsulated by point particle dynamics. We provide several test cases and benchmark the code’s performance against analytic predictions. The open-source code is available in the most recent release of REBOUNDx.

Abstract (sommario):
Introduction. An isolated fracture of the small tuberosity is a very rare injury that can often be overlooked. This injury is significant due to the function of the subscapularis muscle, which loses its attachment by separating the small tuberosity. Case report. A 45-year-old former athlete suffered a left shoulder injury while falling downhill. Although the clinical picture was not convincing, a CT scan showed a fracture. Open repositioning and osteosynthesis were performed. After rehabilitation, the patient regained full active range of motion in the shoulder joint three months after the operation. The aim of this paper is to present the mechanism of injury, the clinical picture, the necessary diagnostics, and the technique of surgical treatment. The results of other authors whose series are also very small were analyzed. Conclusion. The conclusion of this paper is that such an injury requires surgical treatment to preserve a good range of motion in the shoulder joint.

Abstract (sommario):
Objectives: The purpose of this article is to utilize video images for the examination of lower limb biomechanics in tennis players while executing forehand and backhand strokes, providing a reference for training. Methods: This article provides a brief introduction to forehand and backhand strokes in the sport of tennis. Subsequently, a biomechanical analysis of the lower limbs during forehand and backhand strokes was conducted on ten level 2 tennis players and ten specialized tennis students at XX Sports University. Findings: Level 2 athletes who have undergone a long training exhibited higher linear velocity and joint torque in the lower-limb joints during the preparatory and striking phases of forehand and backhand strokes. Additionally, they exhibited more pronounced surface electromyographic signals in the rectus femoris muscle of the lower limbs. Novelty:The novelty of this article lies in the use of video imagery, a non-contact and non-intrusive method that does not affect the athletes' movements, to study the biomechanics of their lower limbs. Abstract (sommario):
Abstract. In the light of recent advances in 2D turbulence, we investigate the long range predictability problem of atmospheric flows. Using 2D Euler equations, we show that the full nonlinearity acting on a large number of degrees of freedom can, paradoxically, improve the predictability of the large scale motion, giving a picture opposite to the one largely popularized by Lorenz: a small local perturbation of the atmosphere will progressively gain larger and larger scales by nonlinear interaction and will finally cause large scale change in the atmospheric flow.

Abstract (sommario):
A crank-rocker engine is a new invention used to convert oscillating motion from the curve-piston into the rotary motion of the crankshaft. The configuration of this new engine is different from the normal slider-crank engine, so the existing model used to calculate the combustion characteristic is not appropriate for this new engine. A fundamental thermodynamic model of a single curved-cylinder spark-ignition crank-rocker engine is presented. The model was simulated in MATLAB to predict the combustion characteristics at different operating conditions. The friction losses, residual gas fraction and combustion efficiency were introduced into the combustion model to improve the overall accuracy of the model. The developed model was used to analyze and evaluate the in-cylinder pressure, fuel burn rate, and heat release under various crank angle positions. To validate the predictions of the model, experimental tests were conducted on a single-cylinder crank-rocker engine at an engine speed of 2000 rpm, spark timing of 8.60 CA BTDC, full load and wide-open throttle (WOT) condition. Finally, the results were plotted and compared with the simulation results. The findings obtained from the current study have shown the ability of the simulation model to predict the combustion characteristics under different operating conditions. The agreement between the results of the present model and experimental data was reasonably good. This research work proposes a new model which can predict the behavior of the crank-rocker engine. The information gained from this study will aid in the tuning process and future development of this engine.

Urquhart, Peter. "1979 : reading the tax-shelter boom in Canadian film history". Thesis, McGill University, 2004. http://digitool.Library.McGill.CA:80/R/?func=dbin-jump-full&object_id=85211.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
More certified-Canadian feature films were shot in Canada in 1979 than in any other year. The height of what has become known as the "tax-shelter boom," 1979 stands as a remarkable moment in the history of the Canadian cinema, with 70 features shot in a year in which Hollywood produced only 99 films. The extant history of the Canadian cinema has largely ignored this moment, and in this thesis I argue that the slim treatment of the period by critics represents a "received wisdom," consistently repeated, but seldom scrutinized, and that this received wisdom is representative of the culturally nationalist impulse which has coloured the entire historiography of the Canadian cinema. Because many of the films produced during the boom were in the style of Hollywood genres, the "received wisdom" presents the entirety of the tax-shelter boom as a cultural and industrial near-disaster for the Canadian cinema, and this thesis, partly a revisionist history, explores not only those conclusions, but also provides critical discussion of them.
I begin by presenting the received wisdom, the existing account, on the period. This is followed by a chapter which situates the tax-shelter boom in a history of state intervention in the feature film industry. Following this, I provide analysis of the contexts surrounding the tax-shelter boom, including critical discussion of articles and reviews from the contemporaneous popular press, and of the industry discourse. I then turn my attention to the texts themselves, which the received wisdom more or less ignores, and provide three thematically-organized chapters of textual analysis: the first organized around readings of gender and genre in the films, the second on the prevalent theme of "selling out," which is central to numerous films of the period, and a third chapter which explores the place of Quebec in the films of the period.
The thesis concludes with an analysis of the material effects of the government policies which led to the boom, and concludes that in this respect too, the received account of the period---once again, as a failure---needs to be reexamined.

Bardsley, Karen. "Out of sight : resemblance, illusion and cinematic perception". Thesis, McGill University, 2003. http://digitool.Library.McGill.CA:80/R/?func=dbin-jump-full&object_id=84465.

Abstract (sommario):
In my thesis I develop a theory of our mental, physiological and emotional involvement with motion pictures that accounts for the distinct role of perception in our cinematic experiences. In particular, I present a (limited) resemblance view of cinematic perception and depiction that begins with an analysis of motion picture screenings as events in the world to which audience members share perceptual access and to which we can attribute complex visual and auditory properties. By understanding the precise nature of these properties and by understanding the mind's rich and dynamic relationship to visual and auditory stimuli, we can meet the demand of explaining the essential contribution of perception to our cinematic experiences. This positive theory is introduced through a philosophical and empirical critique of the work of several contemporary "cognitivist" film theorists who can been faulted for (i) falling into the traps of traditional illusion accounts, (ii) failing to account for the perceptual nature of our film experiences, or (iii) incorrectly characterizing the nature of our perceptual relationship to cinematic content.

Abstract (sommario):
The United States Supreme Court placed the major Hollywood studios in violation of antitrust laws in 1948, leading to the end of the classical Hollywood studio system of the 1930s and 1940s. Subsequent changes in the corporate organization and mode of production of the major studios signaled the end of the traditional B-movie as a product of block-booking policies.
B-movies became a distinctly different entity in the 1950s, however. From the institutional effects of the antitrust ruling, to changing audience demographics, the emergent patterns in production, distribution and exhibition had a profound effect on the evolution of the B-movie from its origins in the early 1930s to its new role in the cinematic marketplace of the 1950s. Increasingly the result of newly formed independent companies, B-movies innovated such industrial components as new genre cycles and demographic patterns.
This dissertation takes a political economy approach to examining the B-movie in the 1950s as an economic product, with a specific emphasis on independent filmmaking. The implication for film studies lies in answering questions about the unique nature of the B-movie filmmaking process: how is the mode of production of a B-movie different from that of mainstream Hollywood filmmaking? How does the low-budget nature of independent cinema determine its mode of production? How is a B-movie limited and/or defined by the low budget nature of its mode of production, and how does this affect the film's aesthetics? How do B-movies function in, and what is their value to, the film marketplace? Changes in film production, distribution and exhibition will be examined, as will patterns in film spectatorship in relation to the changing institutional landscape of the film industry in the 1950s.
The B-movie was a volatile entity during the 1950s, with both major and minor studios questioning the economic viability of low-budget production. B-movies existed in opposition to the cinematic mainstream in the 1950s, a legacy that was passed on to independent filmmakers of subsequent decades. Analyzing the mode of production of these B-movies is essential in understanding their aesthetics, as well as their historical role in the film industry.

Benoit, James. "Working through the ambiguities of focalization with the films of Edward Yang". Thesis, McGill University, 2005. http://digitool.Library.McGill.CA:80/R/?func=dbin-jump-full&object_id=98539.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
This thesis is an evaluation of the extent to which theories of focalization are useful for the analysis of point of view in film. In it, I apply the small number of focalization models advanced within film studies to an analysis of the works of an internationally acclaimed Taiwanese director, Edward Yang. I reveal that Yang's films serve well to demonstrate how the conventional typologies of external and internal focalization are convenient labels that mask the considerable degree of ambiguity that is reflected by processes of focalization and narration in many films. Furthermore, I illustrate how an application of the alternative theory of auto-focalization to film analysis can generally free us from the limitations of these typologies, by drawing our attention to the iconic implications of film imagery. Finally, I determine that both models of focalization are largely useful for highlighting the degree to which the functions of character-focalizers and narrators can be indistinguishable, particularly in self-reflexive films.

Braun, Lori. "Montreal suburban nonplaces : Famous Players theatres and the deterioration of urban community". Thesis, McGill University, 2002. http://digitool.Library.McGill.CA:80/R/?func=dbin-jump-full&object_id=79748.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
The goal of this thesis is to examine the way in which economics shape suburban Famous Players megaplexes in Montreal and how they abet a destruction of urban community. I use Jameson and the critique of the Situationiste International to demonstrate the value, in this case, of examining the relationship between the economic and community. Jameson aptly describes an economic disorientation and identity crisis created by postmodern capitalism. The SI brings to light a loss of enchantment resulting from mass produced products and spaces. I describe the way in which the symbolism, architecture, and aesthetics of the megaplex are a direct result of the space's capitalist needs and form a place that is alienated, in every sense, to locality. Sorkin and Auge serve to further illustrate the way in which postmodern spaces are rootless non-places and risk destroying vital aspects of locality. I will also explore, using Buck-Morss and Eagleton, how the bonds of the megaplex non-place community are maintained through the sensual pleasure of virtual entertainment. I will argue that this entertainment and space, dislocated from community, abets a slow deterioration of identity with relation to place.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
The Canadian government introduced its Multicultural and Employment Equity policies in a series of attempts to induce federally-controlled institutions to reflect the racial diversity of the Canadian population in their programs and workforces. This is a case study of one institution's response to these policies. It examines the implementation of the six-year New Initiatives in Film (NIF) program begun in 1990 by the now-defunct women's filmmaking unit, Studio D of the National Film Board of Canada (NFB) and exposes the fault lines along which the goals of the NFB's various constituent parts clashed and meshed with the diverse goals of various parties in NIF's target communities (i.e. "emergent aboriginal and 'of colour' women filmmakers"). I argue that because the NIF program was structured according to the politics of identity ("race" in this case), "artworld" issues of unfair hiring and funding practices in the Canadian film industry, became distorted and expressed as issues of identity. Obfuscating the professional dynamics in the world of Canadian filmmaking by using "race" as an organizing principle did not, in the long-term, assure the sustained inclusion of excluded groups within mainstream institutions. A more effective strategy, the data suggests, would have been for underrepresented groups to cultivate alliances with professionals in the filmmaking industry based on concrete occupational, rather than hypothetical race-based interests.

Abstract (sommario):
Chapter Two covers Vitagraph's return to production on a full-time basis, which began with relocating its studio from a rooftop in Manhattan to a purpose-built facility in Brooklyn. The new glass-roofed studios enabled year-round production, necessitating the establishment of a stock company of players and writer-directors. Blackton and Smith devised a system whereby each would oversee production units that reflected their individual values and approach to cinema. This coincided with the explosive growth of nickelodeon theatres across America. Vitagraph opened a distribution office in Chicago, as well as sales offices in London and Paris, to become the most popular producer of motion pictures in much of the world. During this time Blackton applied his talent as an illustrator to create motion picture animation. The chapter concludes with Vitagraph and the other pioneer filmmakers being forced to join Edison's Motion Picture Patents Company in order to remain in business.

Abstract (sommario):
Women from all classes across the United States were recognized as highly successful and effective composers and arrangers. In contemporary and later interviews and publications including The American Organist, Moving Picture News, and Moving Picture World, accompanists such as organists Rosa Rio and Alice Smyth-Jay and violinist Helen Ware describe composing motifs or themes for characters and events in silent films that they then used to create full scores for the motion pictures they accompanied. Industry insiders credited accompanist-composers who were deemed especially good at their jobs with the success of many theatres and for providing artistic excellence in the burgeoning medium. Women’s music for feature films, shorts, and newsreels served to suggest, shape, and help define the musical tastes of the time, to educate listeners, and to show how music could serve as a creative, narrative, and interpretative force in the cinema.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract Julian Hochberg has had little direct influence on our academic careers, and we have never even met him. Our knowledge of his contributions to perception and cognition comes entirely from his writings and through discussions of the influence he has had on some of our colleagues and mentors. Those writings have anticipated major developments in perception and cognition, often by several decades. We firmly believe that his prescient writings will continue to influence perception research for decades to come. The measure of Hochberg’s contribution comes not from the number of papers he published (although he has plenty), nor from extensive research on a single topic. Rather, at least for us, Hochberg’s influence comes from the number of original ideas he has had and the number of as yet unexplored big questions he has addressed in his writing. One useful rubric for measuring the influence of someone’s writing is to examine the number of good ideas contained in each of his papers (the metric was conceived by Brian Scholl: Most papers in psychology have at most one or maybe two new ideas (and many have a ratio of less than one idea/paper). In contrast, many of Hochberg’s papers, particularly his book chapters, are chock full of original, creative, and important ideas that cry out for further empirical work. Many of these ideas have yet to receive the attention they deserve in the perception literature. A researcher who was short of ideas could certainly mine Hochberg’s writings and never run out of important questions to address. In this essay, we describe just two examples of Hochberg’s ability to identify interesting and underexplored problems. One involves a study he described in passing as part of a larger chapter, an experiment that anticipated the current literature on change detection by nearly 20 years. The other involves his thorough discussion of motion-picture perception, an area that still is in desperate need of empirical exploration.

Abstract The idea of producing Broadway revivals of Broadway musicals didn’t come up much in the fifties or sixties. The potential Broadway audience was smaller in those days, when a two-year run was exceptional. How many people were likely to pay good money to see a show they had already seen? It was also problematic financially. The original producers and investors shared in a full slate of subsidiary rights, including motion picture rights and stock and amateur licensing; few of these income sources were available to backers of a revival. And then there was the theatre situation. With as many as fifteen new musicals on the boards in any given season, not to mention holdovers, theatre owners had their pick of n,ew potential hits.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract On February 18, 1915, The Birth of a Nation became the first motion picture ever to be shown in the White House. Operators wearing full evening dress utilized two Simplex machines to project the film onto the white wooden panels of the East Room. The screening was a personal favor by President Woodrow Wilson to Thomas Dixon Jr., a former classmate and longtime friend. Invited by Dixon to view Griffith’s film, the president had only one objection, and that was practical: he could not accept social invitations because he was still officially in mourning for his wife, Ellen Axson Wilson, who had died a few months earlier. To get around this difficulty, Dixon suggested exhibiting the film at the White House, where the president, his daughters, and some members of the cabinet would be able to view it. There is a legend (one of many that would grow up around this movie) that at the end of the showing, Wilson remarked: “It is like writing history with lightning. And my only regret is that it is all so terribly true.” He may have said this. After all, the film’s view of the Civil War and Reconstruction periods was not too different from Wilson’s own (his historical writings were several times quoted in the film’s intertitles). Moreover, it is unlikely that the Southern-born Wilson (who, as president, had extended segregation to all departments of the federal government) was bothered by the film’s rampant racism. But there seems to be no contemporary reference for the remark. In 1977, when the only survivor of the White House screening was interviewed, she recalled that the president “seemed lost in thought during the showing” and “walked out of the room without saying a word when the movie was over.”

Abstract (sommario):
Assessments of regional heart wall deformation (wall motion, thickening, strain) are commonly used to evaluate left ventricular wall function in the clinical setting. Nuclear based imaging modalities such as PET and SPECT are commonly used to localize ischemic myocardial disease, and can identify impairment of cardiac function due to hypertrophic or dilated cardiomyopathies. Regional wall motion analysis in conjunction with global left ventricular (LV) ejection fraction is commonly used to assess systolic and diastolic function. The quantification of ventricular strains throughout the entire cardiac cycle provides valuable information that could be used to more effectively differentiate between diastolic and systolic dysfunction, as well as a more complete picture of overall cardiac performance.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract A multi-phased evaluation of the Iowa Driving Simulator as a virtual proving ground for construction equipment simulation is presented. In Phase I the Iowa Driving Simulator was evaluated in an “open-loop” mode to assess its capability to simulate a typical maneuver common to wheel loader operation, and its viability as a test platform for human subject evaluation of those maneuvers. A typical wheel loader truck loading cycle involves numerous directional shifts. Cycle productivity is increased if these shifts are executed at full engine throttle. Jerk and acceleration levels associated with full throttle shifts, however, can cause both operator discomfort and spillage of loaded material. Electronically controlled transmissions have the potential to both minimize directional shift times and material loss while optimizing operator comfort. This optimization will require an understanding of the factors which affect operator comfort during shifts. A study was therefore devised to determine those aspects of the motion generated by a directional shift which affect operator comfort. The Iowa Driving Simulator motion system was used to present operators with a series of acceleration time histories which are representative of various shift strategies. The operators rated the relative comfort of each strategy during paired comparison tests. Limitations of the simulator motion system prevented definitive results from being drawn; however, results did confirm shift comfort criteria previously established by the machine manufacturer. Success of the Phase I effort was sufficient to warrant a more in-depth study. In Phase II a complete VPG environment for wheel loader operation on the IDS was developed and qualitatively evaluated. This VPG environment included a visual model of a mine pit, developed for Caterpillar, Inc. by engineers at its National Center for Supercomputing Applications office, combined with the immersive motion capability of the Iowa Driving Simulator. A real-time dynamics model of a generic wheel loader along with a menu driven interface to the data set used to simulate a particular wheel loader were developed at Center for Computer Aided Design. This combination of programs allows changes to the design of a loader to be rapidly evaluated within a virtual proving ground environment or off-line at an engineering workstation. The machine model was then combined with an implement/soil interaction model, also developed at Caterpillar’s National Center for Supercomputing Applications office. The resulting machine model can be evaluated either off-line at a workstation or driven in response to operator input within the Iowa Driving Simulator virtual proving ground environment. A comparison of the offline model’s predictions of machine response to swept-sinewave steering input is shown to compare favorably with measured performance of the actual machine.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract The JCSM concept (short for Jackup Combined Semisubmersible Multifunction Platform) is a new type of semisubmersible platform presented by the first author, which overcomes the shortcomings of the available semisubmersible platforms, and combines the advantages of the traditional semisubmersible platform, the Jackup platform and the new FPSO concept - IQFP. Due to the complicated interaction between stability and hydrodynamic performance, it is necessary to explore the effect of geometrical parameters of the main body on the stability and hydrodynamic performance in order to obtain the optimal design plan of a JCSM platform. Firstly, the structure components and innovations of the JCSM were briefly reviewed in order to facilitate readers to understand its full picture. Then, six independent geometric parameters were selected by carefully studying the shape characteristics of the initial design plan of a JCSM study case. Furthermore, the stability heights and motion responses of various floating bodies of the JCSM case with different geometric parameters in wave were calculated using boundary element method based on potential flow theory. Lastly, effect of the shape parameters on stability and hydrodynamic performance of the JCSM was qualitatively evaluated. The research would shed lights on the shape design of the JCSM main body.

Abstract (sommario):
ABSTRACT Cervical syndrome is one of the most common painful conditions of modern times. It can be defined as a set of disorders caused by degenerative changes to the joints of the cervical spine. The clinical picture of a person affected by the cervical syndrome includes pain, increased tone of the neck muscles, as well as the muscles of the shoulder girdle, reduced range of motion of the cervical spine, etc. This study aimed to determine the effects of exercise programs on cervical syndrome based on a systematic review of previous research. PubMed, Google Scholar, SCIndex, and Medline databases were all searched to compile data on the effects of exercise programs on cervical syndrome. The following keywords were used in the search: cervical syndrome, physical exercise, and neck pain. The inclusion criteria were that the papers were written in English, were available in full text, and were published between 2015 and 2020. Based on the set criteria, 13 studies were included in the final analysis. Based on their analysis, it was determined that various forms of physical exercise programs have numerous positive effects among people affected by the cervical syndrome (reduction of pain, increased range of motion of the cervical spine, increased muscle strength and endurance of neck muscles, relaxation of cervical flexor muscles, reduction of pain in response to pressure, reduction of nocturnal neck pain, etc.). Physical exercise programs lead to strengthening and increased flexibility. By strengthening the musculature, the support that the muscles give to the surrounding joints increases, while the increase in flexibility affects the function of the joints and enables a greater range of motion, which is reduced by cervical syndrome. Due to all the previously mentioned positive effects of physical exercise programs among people affected by the cervical syndrome, physical exercise programs should be included as their first-line treatment.

Abstract (sommario):
The purpose of this paper is to present accurate, objective information about the kinematic characteristics of three of the punches used in striking combat sports: cross, swing and uppercut. The use of MOVEN equipment and a computational methodology that have been presented in other studies have made it possible to present a highly accurate analysis. The kinematic parameters chosen for the comparative analysis of these striking techniques are the fist's speed, the minimum fist's acceleration value (recorded after impact as a measure of the impact force), the length of the fist's trajectory and the distance measured from the point where the arm movement begins to the point where the target impact occurs. The subject of the study is a multi-national champion in the 81 kg weight category in full-contact, low-kick and light-kick styles and the data acquisitions were made within the Ciprian Sora Sports Club in Bucharest. The subject executed 10 cross punches, 10 swings and 10 uppercuts in a 40- kg box bag, having MOVEN equipment mounted on it. After calculating the parameters of each stroke we calculated the average values for each type of stroke and compared the variance of these averages over time, referring to the maximum and minimum values for each parameter taken into account. We also have a series of graphical representations to create a clearer picture of the differences we want to highlight. The usefulness of this approach is more than simply informative, such a method of analysis can be useful in drawing up the tactical plans of the fighters and especially in the formation and optimization of the patterns of motion used for each technique and much more, for as many combinations as possible.

Abstract (sommario):
Pin-fin arrays are known to enhance heat transfer from heated surfaces and provide important industrial applications such as increasing internal heat transfer to a turbine blade or solar receiver. Several studies on heat transfer characteristics of various pin-fin arrangements and effects of geometrical parameters on heat transfer have been performed in the past. The present paper aims to address main aspects of fluid flow and heat transfer interactions through a pin-fin array with the help of high-fidelity numerical simulations and focuses on three issues. The first one is to evaluate the effect of three dimensional flow physics such as horseshoe vortices and periodic unsteadiness from vortex shedding on the spatial variation of heat transfer. The second target is to analyze the effect of free end clearance in the case of finite height pin-fin arrays with added flow complexity relative to wall-bounded pin-fin arrays, to provide a comprehensive picture of the flow physics introduced by free ends. The third one is to provide a general guideline for the numerical simulation of flows through pin-fin arrays by comparing simulations on reduced span-wise domains with the full multi-row pin configuration, to elucidate the significance of wall effects. In addition, comparison of the flow characteristics in different stream-wise row locations, is performed to establish the domain length where self-similarity might occur with inflow/outflow conditions. All simulations are conducted for low Mach number incompressible flow with temperature as a passive scalar. The current formulation assumes that variations in temperature have no effect on the fluid motion by choosing appropriate thermal boundary conditions that are still within the realistic parameter range for turbine cooling. In this paper, we perform flow simulations using the Large Eddy Simulation methodology. Two numerical codes, one based on a Finite Volume method and the other based on a Spectral Element approach, are benchmarked with each other and validated versus experiments available in the literature (Ostanek and Thole, 2012).
