Section I of the monograph is devoted to an urgent problem - forecasting the durability of port reinforced concrete structures, the destruction of which is associated with corrosion of steel reinforcement caused by chloride aggression and carbonation of concrete. The analysis of models for calculating the service life of structures and experimental data is carried out, the life cycles for the main degradation processes in concrete and reinforcement, the periods of initiation and propagation of corrosion are considered, the influence of environmental factors (temperature, humidity) and the quality of concrete (In/C, cement consumption, diffusion coefficient) on the kinetics of chloride penetration and the movement of the carbonation front is taken into account. Probabilistic models of basic variables are considered, the limiting states of port reinforced concrete structures for the durability of reinforced concrete structures based on the reliability coefficient for service life are formulated. Sections II and III describe modern methods of restoration and restoration of reinforced concrete port structures subjected to corrosion destruction using nanofibrobeton. The concept of multilevel reinforcement has been implemented. Methods of experimental fracture mechanics were used to evaluate the joint work of exploited concrete and reinforcement nanofibre concrete. It is intended for scientific and engineering staff of universities, research and design organizations.

The Jewish Orphanage in Leiden was the last one of 8 such care homes to open its doors in The Netherlands before the Second World War. After spending almost 39 years in an old and utterly inadequate building in Leiden’s city centre, the inauguration in 1929 of a brand-new building, shown on the front cover, was the start of a remarkably productive and prosperous period. The building still stands there, proudly but sadly, to this day: the relatively happy period lasted less than 14 years. On Wednesday evening, 17th March 1943, the Leiden Police, under German instructions, closed down the Orphanage and delivered 50 children and 9 staff to the Leiden railway station, from where they were brought to Transit Camp Westerbork in the Northeast of the country. Two boys were released from Westerbork thanks to tireless efforts of a neighbour in Leiden; one young woman survived Auschwitz, and one young girl escaped to Palestine via Bergen-Belsen. The 55 others were deported to Sobibor, not one of them survived. Some 168 children lived in the new building at one time or another between August 1929 and March 1943. This book reconstructs life in the orphanage based on the many stories and photographs which they left us. It is dedicated to the memory of those who perished in the holocaust, but also to those who survived. Without them this book could not have been written.

This chapter introduces ARC’s principle of being participatory based. This principle requires the active, open participation of front-line staff, middle managers, and top administrators in decisions about practices and policies that affect the well-being of clients served by their organization. It counters the conflicting priority of prescribing change in a top-down manner without the benefit of the experience of those closest to service provision. The chapter explains how participatory-based organizations impact staff discretion, motivation, learning, and engagement with clients and reviews the empirical evidence that supports participatory-based approaches. This evidence includes research in social cognition and neuroscience. Case examples illustrate the positive impact of participatory approaches on service provider and client outcomes, outlining their influence through norms and expectations as well as underlying beliefs and assumptions.

The resource squeeze and uncertainty exacerbated by marketization can lead to disorganization trends in employment relations and tight management control in the labor process. This chapter presents findings from interviews with managers, worker representatives, and front-line workers concerning worker voice, pay setting, job insecurity, performance management, professional autonomy, and staff–client interactions. Management control in the labor process is directly related to the quality of the service, since they include the amount of interaction (whether there is a speedup), its nature (whether it is narrowly focused on job outcomes), and its distribution (whether there is creaming and parking). We show that the extent to which these outcomes differ within countries depends on degrees of resource scarcity and uncertainty specific to each market segment.

This book provides a detailed, step-by-step description of a model quality improvement intervention for hospitals, pinpointing the obstacles and showing how to surmount them. This second edition has been carefully updated, with new material describing some technical aspects of infection prevention, new tools for use by front-line providers, and results of recent large collaborative infection prevention studies. In easy-to-read, user-friendly language, it explains why clinicians neglect or actively oppose quality changes—from physicians who distrust change, to nurses who want to protect their turf, to infection preventionists who avoid the wards. The book also sheds light on how and why hospitals embark on quality improvements, the role of the hospital’s leadership cadre, the selection and training of the project team, and how to sustain quality gains long term. The intervention framework described in the book focuses on the prevention of hospital-associated infections—in particular, catheter-associated urinary tract infection (CAUTI)—but it is directly applicable to a variety of other hospital issues, such as falls, pressure sores, and Clostridioides difficile infection (CDI). In fact, the book includes a chapter applying this framework to a CDI prevention initiative. In addition, for hospitals having trouble with staff adherence to a quality initiative, we provide three infection-specific questionnaires (for CAUTI, CLABSI, and CDI) to help pinpoint individual problems, and provide a link to a website offering advice tailored to their specific circumstances.

This chapter details events following Mancini's employment as a Universal Studios staff composer in 1952. The Universal Studios staff composers were a highly organized, well-oiled team, able to score any sort of film, any story or setting, albeit with fairly generic music and always in a rush. Mancini's daily routine at Universal, studying the clichés of Hollywood storytelling music, was the perfect on-the-job training for his career to come. Among his first assignments was to score the studio's glamorous two-reeler films with titles like The World's Most Beautiful Girls, Fun for All, and Calypso Carnival. The first feature-length film receiving more than a handful of music cues from Mancini was called Willie and Joe Back at the Front (1952). As a sign of growing confidence, conductor Joseph Gershenson gradually gave Mancini a shot at writing the opening main title music for several films, including The Raiders, All I Desire, and City Beneath the Sea. Mancini's first onscreen credit would come as an arranger in 1954 for the Universal bio-pic musical The Glenn Miller Story.

Chapter 1 traces the long, hard-fought battle over black southerners’ legal rights that took place during and in the wake of the Civil War. Individual African Americans who fought for their rights in the face of incursions by their former masters and other whites were at the front lines of this battle. By appealing to federal agencies like the Freedmen’s Bureau, hiring lawyers, and testifying in courtrooms throughout the South, they mounted a stiff challenge to white southerners’ attempts to continue to largely shut them out of the courts. The federally operated Freedmen’s Bureau and the northern military occupying the South also worked to open southern courts to African Americans during the early years of Reconstruction. In addition, Congressional Republicans’ takeover of Reconstruction helped give some black southerners the federal support to exercise the rights they claimed.

Dementia is a global issue but is experienced at an individual and relational level. This chapter traces the emergence of both person centred care and relationship centred care with the latter approach expressed through the Senses Framework. The theoretical development and practical application of the Senses [security, belonging, continuity, purpose, achievement, significance] are outlined highlighting the importance of staff, carer and person [with dementia in this chapter] all working together. The application of the Senses Framework to a recent practice development study set in a care home for people with dementia that used a combination of the Senses and life story work to create an 'enriched environment is then described. The chapter concludes with a discussion about how the Senses can be used to facilitate an early diagnosis of dementia and to help people with dementia and their families to engage with a life ‘outside the front door’, what we term ‘The Neighbourhood Space’.

Since 2016 the Scottish Centre for Comics Studies has produced a number of public information comics, many of them dealing with healthcare issues and science communication. This has been part of a research project looking into the educational potential of comics. We believe that comics, which combine words and images, engage readers in unique ways that can aid understanding. The medium is highly effective at communicating ideas clearly, but also provoking emotional, intellectual and imaginative responses. When the Coronavirus pandemic took hold in early 2020, sending the world into lockdown, we decided to create an anthology comic to help people reflect upon the impact of the virus. We wanted to capture the important transitions that everyone was making, and to tell the stories of the communities, groups, and individuals who were doing amazing things to help themselves and others. We sought to tell the stories of ordinary people in extraordinary circumstances. We also wanted to highlight the University of Dundee’s response. This has included scientists working to assist the global effort to find a vaccine, nursing students join the front line by completing their studies in practice, the creation of the Scrub Hub, which saw a partnership between the university, business and the public to create much needed PPE, creating guidance material and resources in partnership with British Psychological Society to support children and young people, school staff and families with educational and life transitions, and many other activities. In light of these inspiring tales of dedication and determination the comics team mobilised to help tell these stories in the best way we know how – through a comic! Pandemic Tales: Responses to Covid-19 and Lockdown collects stories about these strange and challenging times. During the pandemic and lockdown the stories created for this anthology were released individually as webcomics on the Scottish Centre for Comics Studies website and some through blogs published by the Transformative Change: Educational and Life Transitions (TCELT) Research Centre. These stories have now been collected here in one volume. Many thanks to all those who supported this project, from all the writers and artists creating the comics, to Professor John Rowan, Dr Clive Randall and Kaye Lister at the University of Dundee, who assisted with funding the project. We dedicate this comic to all those who we have lost to the pandemic, to everyone who has struggled through illness and the pressures of lockdown, and to all the scientists and healthcare workers around the world who have worked so hard to keep us safe.
