Testo completoThis study highlights the involvement of beneficiaries' agents in the advent of good care practices in Quebec's nursing home. It is part of a larger study resulting from a concerted action between the Seniors Secretariat of the Ministry of Family (Famille-SA), the Ministry of Health and Social Services (MSSS) and the Fonds de recherche du Québec – Société et culture [Fund of Quebec-Society and Culture Research] (FRQSC). This larger study, which aims to highlight good care practices in nursing homes, ties in with measures 6, 8 and 50 of the Government Action Plan to Counter Elder Mistreatment (PAM) 2017-2022. Favoring a qualitative approach for our study, semi-directed individual interviews with ten beneficiaries' agents made it possible to state that when it comes to good care practices, special attention must be paid to interpersonal relations, interpersonal skills, and attitudes. Good care appears to be both a disposition and a practice that relies on the ability to "take care" and adaptability. If the participants tend to take responsibility for themselves and to individualize this notion, the results show that the cultural context, whether organizational or socio-political, considerably influences the level of treatment. The beneficiaries' agents would have sufficient knowledge, yet they would find it difficult to put this knowledge to good use because of their work structures. According to the theoretical perspective of the ethics of care, the presence of cultural obstacles, caused by a lack of consideration for all the "caring" professions, would considerably limit their practices. The research concludes on the importance of highlighting the care professions and reiterates the need for the social worker to encourage a "ground-up" vision when making decisions about the quality of life of elderly people in assisted accommodations.

Testo completoThe current context of an aging population calls for more careful consideration of retirement homes, particularly in terms of social ties. After moving to a retirement home, many seniors want to continue to feel useful and to actively participate in society. The purpose of this qualitative research is to explore and better understand the perceptions and experiences of seniors living in retirement homes with respect to their social participation. We are looking at whether retirement homes encourage the accomplishment of life habits, if seniors are seen as active participants in the life of their community and whether they participate in leisure activities both inside and outside the retirement home. Eleven individual, semi-directed interviews were conducted with residents of retirement homes in the Capitale-Nationale region. The data was processed using the NVivo11 software and analyzed using a content analysis method. The Human Development Model - Disability Creation Process 2 guided the analysis of the data collected. The results provide a better understanding of the participatory biography of the participants in the study and identify the factors that may influence their social participation. In terms of results, our study identified several factors relating to personal life and the retirement home environment that influenced the social participation of residents. Regarding seniors’ personal lives, the most important factors are the use of satisfactory coping strategies, involvement in the community through volunteering or work, and the absence of health problems. From an environmental point of view, the main factors are geographical proximity to seniors’ support network, a varied range of activities and staff stability. The discussion provides answers to the research questions. Recommendations are made for intervention strategies and future research that would address the issues generated from this study.

Testo completoAim - The number of patients with Alzheimer's disease increases more and more (a pathology for which there is still no treatment that can stop its progression). The aim of this study is to highlight the interest of "song mediated groupal therapy (psychodynamic inspired group therapy) on behavior disorders and depression when taking care of elderly people with Alzheimer's disease at an advanced stage.Method - We create 10 groups of 6 to 8 elderly women each that would participate to twelve overall therapy group seances at a single seance per week basis. These are named “singing groups”. We create 10 groups of 6 to 8 elderly women each the so called "control groups", that would not participate to the group therapy. We evaluate the groups (control and singing) twice; at the beginning and the end of the session. The tools that are used are the NPI (Neuro Psychiatric Inventory), the Cornell scale and the Cohen-Mansfield agitation inventory. Results - For the 61 subjects who participated to the “groups singing”, we observed a significant improvement (p <0.01) at all scales but the size effect (associated to the group therapy) is very large. Conclusion - In conclusion, we were able to demonstrate an impact on the humor and the psychobehavioral disorders, with a statistically significant impact with an acceptable number of subjects. This improvement was noticed on the three scales (NPI, CMAI, Cornell)
