Testo completoThe Mississippian Cultures are agricultural societies established on the Mississippi Valley between the eleventh and sixteenth centuries. Practicing maize agriculture, they established ceremonial and urban centers composed of tumuli on which various structures were built. The arrangement within the burial mounds is part of the socio-political organization of a society based on a cosmovision that has been the subject of various archaeological and ethnohistorical studies since the twentieth century. A mythology based on the antagonism between the Thunderbird and the Serpent materialized on artifacts made of copper and shells in particular. Through the study of the four major Mississippian sites (Cahokia, Moundville, Etowah and Spiro), what are the elements that allow us to speak of "Mississippian cultures"? Moreover, what socio-political-religious organization was adopted by the Mississippians considering the results of the archaeological studies carried out? To what extent can a study of twentieth-century ethnographic texts (Omaha, Osage, Sauk, among others) help in the analysis of the religious field? What observations did European colonizers have of Native American groups formerly federated with the Mississippians (the most evocative example being the Natchez)? Through the spatial analysis of the arrangement of burial mounds, funerary spaces and the question of sacrifice, iconography and its correlation to myths and funerary rites, this study is a contribution to the archaeology of Mississippi cultures and a contribution to the discussion on the socio-political organization of Mississippians

Testo completoThe archaeological investigations of the pre-ceramic period on the high plain of cundinamarca and boyaca (colombia) have demonstrated that groups of hunters gatherers settled in this area in rock-shelters from 13000 b. P. Onwards. The excavation of Galindo, located on a natural terrace, allowed us to investigate the oldest open-air settlement of the preceramic period on the sabana de bogota. At this site, four successive periods of occupation can be distinguished, starting from 8745 b. P. The oldest two were of very short duration. Around 7735 the occupation of the terrace seems to be of a more stable character, but it was still seasonal. Towards 5000 b. P. The terrace was abandoned, to be resettled later by agriculturalists of the ceramic herreraperiod and more recent groups. The different occupants exploited the faunal resources that were typical of the area (deer, cavia and ducks). The lithic industry consists of one single technological system for the production of flakes and unifacial tools, without predetermination of the end-product. This technological tradition was used by the groups of hunters gatherers of the high plain from the beginnings of the pre-ceramic period until more recent times. It differs from another tradition found at some sites in colombia, where the stone toolkit consists of bifacials manufactured with predetermination

Testo completoTHIS THESIS GIVES AN OVERVIEUW OF 25 YEARS OF FIELD ARCHAEOLOGY PRACTISED IN THE ANCIENT SOUTHERN NETHERLANDS AND IN SPAIN. ALMOST EVERY CHAPTRE OF MEDIEVAL ARCHAEOLOGY IS DISCUSSED (E. G. Research HISTORY, RURAL AND URBAN ARCHAEOLOGY, CHURCHES AND ABBAYS, CASTLES) BUT EARTH WORKS AND MOTTE-AND-BAILEY CASTLES OF THE SOUTHERN NETHERLANDS TAKE A PREDOMINANT POSITION IN THIS STUDY. AS FAR AS SPAIN IS CONCERNED, THE RESEARCH IS LIMITED TO THE ISLAMIC SETTLEMENT (BOTH URBAN AND RURAL) ; EXCAVATIONS OF A FORTIFIED GRANARY PERMIT COMPARAISONS WITH BERBER SETTLEMENT IN NORTH-AFRICA, BUT ASWEL WITH MORE NORTHERLY REGIONS IN THE CHRISTIAN WORLD

Testo completoThe aim of this thesis is the study of rock-carvings (drawings and inscriptions) of three archaeological sites of the upper indus, northern pakistan : thor north, helor das west and helor das east. Its first part is a general introduction of the upper undus valley, a study of ancient routes by which this region have to be joined, a brief introduction of chilas region (geographical and administrative position, climate, resources) and the whole sites of this region, the method of work adopted for this thesis, and the definitions of some listed words which appeared throughout this research. The second part is an integral study of the three sites (thor north, helor das west, helor das east) : introduction, study of rock-carvings site by site and boulder by boulder of all the inscriptions (reading, translation, commentary, dating) and drawings and their identifications. The third part consists of two sub-parts : a general commentary of all of the rock-carvings which are classified under different topics, followed by a general conclusion about the identification of engravers : why, when and by whom these carvings were engraved; added with some list and index at the end. The second volume consists in two parts : a series of some drawings of carving and a complete list of photos of all stones, except few ones, of these sites

Testo completoWest Asia is one of regions where transformation of hunter-gatherers into farmers happened without external influence. This transformation, Neolithisation in other word, is well documented in archaeological records, in particular in the Levant. The aim of this research is to study the evolution of lithic industries in the North Levant and to understand the development of chipped stone technology in relation to the Neolithisation. The principle material studied is a collection coming from excavations of Tell Ain el-Kerkh in Northwest Syria. In order to achieve the goal of this study, three steps were set up;1) detailed analysis of the lithic industries of Tell Ain el-Kerkh for the understanding the strategies of lithic production carried out at this site (chapter III);2) comparison of the lithic material from Kerkh with those from other contemporary sites for the understanding of the general evolution of lithic industries during the Neolithic (chapters IV and V);3) we will finally discuss several characters of lithic industries with relation with the Neolithisation (Chapter VI). The methodology used in the analysis of lithic industries is the reconstruction of chaînes opératoires of lithic production. In particular, three important aspects in the lithic production, raw material acquisition, blank production method and tool making, were examined. The study about lithic industries of Tell Ain el-Kerkh showed that lithic production strategy conducted in the site was different according to a period. In the earliest period (El-Rouj 1a period: 8500 BC), blade production using bipolar naviform cores played important role for making divers tools. In the following period (El-Rouj 1b periode: 7500-7000 BC), lithic production strategy was highly developed, which consist of three different chaînes opératoires. In the beginning of the Pottery Neolithic, El-Rouj 2a/2b periode (7000-6800 BC), there is no significant change for the lithic industry when compared with that of preceding pre-pottery period (El-Rouj 1b). Since middle phase of the Pottery Neolithic (El-Rouj 2c period: 6800-6300 BC), the increase of flakes for tool blank is observed. In the final phase of Pottery Neolithic (El-Rouj 2d period: 6300-6000 BC), the lithic industry is characterized by predominance of flakes and a considerable diminution of blades. Comparison of the result obtained from the study of lithic industries at Tell Ain el-Kerkh with other contemporary sites in the north Levant provided a perspective of general evolution of lithic industries in the north Levant from 9th to 7th millennia BC. In addition, we tried to understand the development of the lithic industries in relation to socio-economic context. In the end, two important topics in the Neolithic Levant, diffusion of the PPNB culture and the PPNB collapse, were discussed from the point of view of our results

Testo completoBifaces industries from the middle pleistocene in northern and western europe are defined by a great diversity, and are considered as intricated phenomenous. Their variability is given by the knapping methods and by the intern composition of flake-tools and heavy-tools. Even if those industries are difficult to understand, they show numerous commun points with the industries of the tamise valley, with the african and near east sites. At the opposit, the sites from southern france, southern europe and central europe are differents from ours, because they don't have many bifaces and the heavy-tools dominate the floke-tools. There is no fixed pattern about the evolution or devloppement between tools and the knapping methods during this period. The interpretation of this variability is still mysterious, bacause a lot of informations can be retained (environment), specialized areas, way of life, choice of the knapper, traditions. . . )

Testo completoMy research focuses on the occupation and on the architecture of the Roman period (mid-first century BC - mid-fourth century AD) on the Golan Heights / Ğawlān (southwest of Syria). By reference to the archaeological research (Excavations and Surveys) already accomplished and to the results of my surveys carried out between 2006 and 2013, I study the rate, the nature of occupation and the specificity of the architecture of this region during the Roman period. The study of the architecture is done by taking into account twelve sites as examples, which are composed of five towns and peri-urban sanctuaries, four rural sites (villages / farms) and three extra-urban sites of a military nature, which are related to infrastruture. I also analyze the extra-urban infrastructure (Roman roads) of this zone. For maximum data, I inspect - in addition to the architectural remains - the ceramics material (Volume II), the coins, the inscriptions and other elements that could enrich my informations on the nature and dating of the installations of this period

Testo completoThis work deals with the holocene vegetation evolution in north-western france (ile-de-france and picardie). It is based on the anthracological analysis of 27 archaeological sites from the mesolithic to the historic times (18th century). The first part is dedicated to the basis of the study. First, methods and technics are explained (chapter 1). Then, a methodological reflection concerning taphomic problems is developped (chapter 2). At last, anatomical descriptions, ecology and chrono-geographical distribution of the identified taxa are given (chapter 3). The second part is dedicated to the original study of five archaeological sites from the mesolithic to the iron age (chapter 4 to 8). Finally, in the third and last part of this work, a synthesis (the first one) of charcoal analysis realized in the area is made (chapter 9). Then, an anthracological biozonation is proposed which emphasizes the human impact on vegetation dynamics from the neolithic and above all from the proto-and historic periods (chapter 10)
Testo completoThe objective of this study was to contribute to a better definition of the function of the large open air sites (Les Moulins at Saint-Paul-Trois-Châteaux, la Roberte at Châteauneuf-du-Rhône, Le Gournier at Montélimar) of the Rhône Chassean societies in the beginning of the 4th millennium BC. For the very first time for this type of site, a large number of archaeozoological tools were combined in order to describe the practices and subsistence activities that were taking place at the sites and to define their exact function in the Chassean pastoral system. This approach was completed by a critical analysis of the archaezoological data available for the open air sites of the early and middle Neolithic of the north-western Mediterranean area in relation to their hypothetical function. First, this approach led to a new archaezoological picture of the southern Chasséen. It was also shown that during the late Chasséen the Rhône pastoral system was organised over a web of sites of different kind and with distinct and complementary functions, including caves, the studies large open air settlements but also other sites currently not identified from the archaeozoological. This multimethodological approach confirmed the hypothesis according to which the Rhône large open air sites played the role of central place in the territory, where were converging different Chassean communitites. Moreover, the pastoral practices highlighted in these large sites reflected temporary settlements, suggesting mobility of the late Chassean societies. The extreme diversity of practices involving relationship between men and animals indicates that both economical, symbolical and social activities were taking place at these sites ; from the archaezoological data, the funerary function of the sites seems to be no more than one component of the occupation. Some unusual practices were described for the first time in south –western Europe for early and middle Neolithic, including the deposit of worked bovine talus, collective meals involving dogs consumption and the artificial wear of faunal remains (bovine incisors)

Testo completoThe author propose a new periodisation of the late la tene period in North-Eastern Gaul based on the factorial analysis et hierarchical classification of sixty two ceramic assemblages from settlements of the Aisne valley associated with others artifacts such as fibulae, celtic coins, amphorae and mediterranean importations. The two last centuries b. C. Are divided into six phases of about thirty years long, closely related to the eastern subdivisions usually called as lt. C2, lt. D1a, lt. D1b, lt. D2a, lt. D2b, early roman. The greater interest of this work lies in the methodological framework used to built the periodisation and in its very consequences for the chronology and evolution of ceramics, importations and Belgic coinage

Testo completoThis PhD thesis is devoted to the findings of glass material (recipients, small objects and architectural glass) dated to the Gallo-roman era in Mandubian (Alésia), Lingon (Langres et Mirebeau), and Sequanian (Mandeure-Mathay) territories, situated in Burgundy and Frank-County. In Antiquity, this area constituted one of the main crossroads of North-Eastern Gaul, a situation which is corroborated by the features of the findings glass in the region. It is composed of numerous imports from the Rhone basin, western Switzerland, the Rhine region and even Italy and the Eastern Mediterranean. However the present investigation of the available repertory of shapes and of certain elements representative of distinctive glassmakers indicates that the needs in glass vessel must have been primarily fulfilled by regional workshops. Moreover a confrontation of the different ensembles of from sites of various nature (domestic, handicraft, religious, funerary) indicates that vessel of common usage were specifically chosen to meet particular needs or practices. In this way, a comparative study supported by a statistical analysis of glass ensembles contributes to the characterization of archeological sites
Boichot, Nicolas. "Les amphores Lamboglia 2 de production adriatique et campanienne". Thesis, Lyon, 2018. http://www.theses.fr/2018LYSE2114.
Testo completoLamboglia 2 are among the most common Italic amphorae of the late Roman Republic in the Mediterranean basin and sometimes far beyond. They have also been found on nearly 150 shipwrecks in the Mediterranean. This thesis focuses on two such shipwrecks, known as Qaitbay 1 and Sa Nau Perduda. They shed new light on two themes: the typology of Adriatic amphorae during a transition period in their evolution, and the existence of a production of Lamboglia 2 in Campania. The first part of my thesis summarises the available data on typo-chronological issues, workshops and the spread of Lamboglia 2 by sea routes, through an inventory of shipwrecks. The second part deals with the study of the cargo of the Qaitbay 1 shipwreck lying off Alexandria. The cargo consists mainly of Lamboglia 2 produced in Picenum, accompanied by Dressel 6A from the same region, Brindisian amphorae and Campanian Lamboglia 2. The third part concerns this last type of amphora, which is still poorly known. It is based on a comparative approach of several shipwrecks, including that of Sa Nau Perduda located in the province of Girona. To this day, it is the only known example of a principal cargo of Campanian Lamboglia 2
Pellegrino, Maria Paola. "La céramique du Bronze au Fer du nord des Emirats Arabes Unis : transition et diffusion culturelle". Electronic Thesis or Diss., Paris 1, 2022. http://www.theses.fr/2022PA01H139.
Testo completoThis doctoral research focused on the ceramic assemblage of the transitional period between the late Bronze Age and the early Iron Age in the north of the United Arab Emirates, based on the analysis of a previously unpublished site, Masafi-5, which provides key elements for understanding the different stages of chrono-cultural evolution between these two periods. The study was subsequently extended to all the settlement sites as well as large part of the funerary sites of the region (Tell Abraq, Shimal, Kalba 4, and several collective tombs in the north-eastern UAE) and a comparative study was carried out with the ceramic assemblage of a large site in the Sultanate of Oman, Husn Salut, which shows a different evolution. The employed methodology combines macroscopic and stylistic studies, technological analysis and petrographic studies, in order to identify significant trends in the regional production and distribution of pottery during the periods under study. By cross-checking the data from the excavations and those from the pottery study, we have tried to place this region of the northern UAE within its chronological and historical context, proposing a new chronology that offers a new perspective in the understanding of the evolution of the local cultures from the Bronze Age to the Iron Age

Testo completoAfter the destructive earthquake that took place in 1980 in many localities of the Irpinia and the Basilicata, even the territory of the city of Buccino (Campania) former center of the ancient city of Volcei, was involved in the construction of new residentialblocs. During the reconstruction, the excavations of the Archeological Superintendence of Campania brought to light, all around of the hill on which the town is settled, about 270 burials dated from the mid VII and the III century BC. The study of the grave goods and burial practices as well as the analysis of the topography of the two necropolis area - in Braida and Santo Stefano localities - allowed us to get some important informations about the burials spatial organization, funeraryrituals, the material culture and about changes of the burial ritual after the arrival of the new population, of the Osco-Sabellian origin, in the delicate passage between V and IV century BC
Bessenay-Prolonge, Julie. "Au carrefour du plateau iranien et des steppes d'Asie Centrale : Tureng Tépé dans la plaine de Gorgan, des sociétés proto-urbaines aux forteresses de l'âge du Fer : étude strarigraphiques et architecturales menées d'après les archives inédites de la Mission Française à Tureng Tépé". Thesis, Paris 1, 2018. http://www.theses.fr/2018PA01H004.
Testo completoLocated in the northeast of Iran, at the crossroads of the Iranian plateau and the steppes of Central Asia, the Gorgân plain is, by the nature of its landscapes and climate, a particularly suitable region for human settlements. The site of Tureng Tépé, excavated in the years 1960-1970 by a team of French archaeologists, revealed an occupational sequence of several millennia since Chalcolithic until the modem time. The stratigraphic and architectural study conducted from unpublished documents from the excavation archives, permit us to reconstruct and characterize the oldest occupations of the site, from Chalcolithic to the Iron Age. The archaeological layers discovered in the areas of the Petit Tépé and the Tépé Sud demonstrate continuous occupation from the end of the 4th millennium to the beginning of the 2nd millennium BC. The Middle Bronze Age is marked by the construction of a large monumental brick terrace of which an in-depth architectural analysis has been carried out. In addition, the study of several categories of artifacts clearly shows the existence of long-distance contacts and exchanges between on the one band the plains of Gorgan and Damghan, and on the other hand South Central Asia and Khorasan and to a lesser extent the southeastem regions of the Iranian plateau and Baluchistan. After several centuries of abandonment, Tureng Tépé is reoccupied at the end of the Iron Age II. These occupations, which are clearly distinguishable from those of the Bronze Age, are represented by a succession of fortifications rebuilt several times
Thesis, Lyon 2, 2012. http://www.theses.fr/2012LYO20001/document.
Testo completoThis work is founded on the study of three funerary complexes of outlying suburbs located in the capital cities of Mediomatrici (Metz-Divodurum), Nervii (Bagay-Bagacum) and Morini (Thérouanne-Tervanna). Our study is based on a corpus composed of more than 480 funerary structures, which has been amended by the data issued from the other funerary discoveries carried out in these three cities, from the 18th century to nowadays. Based upon that documentation, we propose an analysis of funerary practices in use in the North of Gaul and more particularly in the province of Gallia Belgica and of their evolution in the first three centuries of our area. The first part of this work is related to the organization of the funerary areas in an urban context through the analysis of different parameters: places and settlement dynamic of funerary areas, internal organization and space structuring as well as the mode of distribution of the structures (functional, chronological and social). The following chapters are related to the understanding and interpretation of the different funerary practices and gestures, which may have been observed during the study of the structures of our corpus. To do that, we have tried to reconstruct the different steps of the funerary process and to replace the whole practices in the order in which they took place. First, we took an interest in the data connected with the stage of the body cremation, data observed during the excavation of the funerary pyres, through the examination of the pit structure, the methods of treatment of the body as well as the role and the origin of the grave goods used around the pyre. Then, we moved on to the place of final deposition of the remains by presenting the constituent elements of the grave, the different types of funerary structures we have been confronted with as well as the varied modes of deposition of the bones and their organization within the sepulchral pit. A specific attention has also been given to the steps which are relative to the transfer and to the modes of deposition of the bones of the deceased in the grave as well as the practices and body movements which follow that. Finally, in a last chapter, we have analyzed the different deposits of the funerary goods in order to define as well as possible the different gestures which were pointed out through the archaeological remains, and which were made at the time of the composition of the grave but also throughout the funeral or during the memorial feasts where respects to the deceased were paid. This overall study is based on a detailed catalogue of the tombs which is composed of two volumes (volume 1: Metz “Avenue André Malraux”, volume 2: Bavay “La Fache des Près Aulnoys” and Thérouanne “Les Oblets”) displaying by chronological phases the observations made during the excavation work, the inventory of the grave goods, as well as the results of the studies of animal and human bones rests
