No. of bitstreams: 1 310510.pdf: 1200245 bytes, checksum: b81d6acaadb4ccd2f615c5e8b35ee40b (MD5)<br>Este trabalho busca investigar a possibilidade de que, partindo da concepção de poder em Foucault - definida como relações estratégicas que implicam necessariamente em resistência e liberdade - podemos compreender a ética como o ato de interagir com tais relações e, a partir daí, com a possibilidade de constituir a si mesmo através de práticas de liberdade. Existem algumas noções fundamentais em Foucault a serem analisadas. O poder não é algo que se detém, mas algo que se exerce; a ética é definida como a "prática refletida da liberdade"; e o sujeito é sempre historicamente constituído. Neste contexto, vemos Foucault em um primeiro momento, como um autor preocupado principalmente com as sujeições a que o poder submete os indivíduos, para em seguida, vislumbrarmos um autor preocupado com a interação destes indivíduos na medida em que tentam constituir a si mesmos, questionando o poder em seus efeitos de verdade e a verdade em seus efeitos de poder. Surgem então, algumas temáticas trabalhadas pelo autor que podem ser entendidas como práticas de liberdade, resistência ao poder e constituição do sujeito; tais como o cuidado de si, o papel do intelectual, a atitude crítica, a ética da amizade e a parrhesia.<br>Le but de ce travail est chercher la possibilité que, à partir de la conception de pouvoir chez Foucault - définie comme des relations stratégiques qui impliquent nécessairement en résistance et liberté - nous pouvons comprendre l'éthique comme l'acte d'interagir avec ces relations et, par la suite, avec la possibilité de se constituer soi même à travers de pratiques de liberté. Il y a quelques notions fondamentales en Foucault, pour être analysées. Le pouvoir n'est pas quelque chose qui subsiste, mais quelque chose qui est exercée; l'éthique est définie comme la "pratique réfléchie de la liberté", et le sujet est toujours historiquement constitué. Dans ce contexte, nous voyons Foucault, dans un premier moment, comme un auteur essentiellement préoccupé avec les sujétions que le pouvoir soumet les individus, pour en ensuite, apercevoir un auteur préoccupé avec l'interaction de ces individus, qui essaient se constituer eux mêmes, en questionnant le pouvoir dans ses effets de vérité et la vérité dans ses effets de pouvoir. Apparaît, alors, certaines questions élaborées par l'auteur qui peuvent être comprises comme des pratiques de liberté, de résistance au pouvoir et à la constitution du sujet; tel comme le soin de soi, le rôle de l'intellectuel, l'esprit critique, l'éthique de l'amitié et la parrhesia.

Meisterdenker zu erfinden ist sicher ein ganz gewöhnlicher Ausdruck von Epigonalität, zumindest seitdem die Philosophie ein Publikum hat. Es ist seit langem ein lesendes Publikum, dessen Meisterdenker also Meisterschreiber. In der Fiktion des Urhebers schließen sich auch gegensätzliche Interessen zusammen; denunziatorische und apologetische Absichten gehen darin konform, kritische und hagiographische Schreibweisen kreuzen sich. So erfahren wir auch von Michel Foucault. Längst ist sein Autorname so anerkannt, daß er zum Sujet eigener Abhandlungen wird. En passant, absatzweise, über Seiten hin ersteht die Figur des Philosophen aus der Lektüre; eine gewisse Aufmerksamkeit wird ungeduldig und drängt zum Ausdruck - so vermehren sich Bücher. Und?, wird man fragen, Foucault wird eben rezipiert, kein Problem! - Foucault?

One of the main influences on Judith Butler‘s thinking has been the work of Michel Foucault. Although this relationship is often commented on, it is rarely discussed in any detail. My thesis makes a contribution in this area. It presents an analysis of Foucault‘s work with the aim of countering Butler‘s representation of his thinking. In the first part of the thesis, I show how Butler initially interprets Foucault‘s project through Nietzschean genealogy, psychoanalysis and Derridean discourse, and how she later develops this interpretation in line with the progress of her own project. In the main part of the thesis, I present an analysis of Foucault‘s thinking in the period from The Archaeology of Knowledge (1969) to The History of Sexuality volume 1 (1976). This analysis focuses on the aspect of his work which has most influenced Butler‘s thinking: namely the notion of a relationship between knowledge, discourse and power. The other issues in his work which Butler addresses—genealogy, the subject, the body, abnormality, and sexuality—are discussed within this framework. I show how, in the early 1970s, Foucault develops the notion of power-knowledge, and sets out a relationship between power-knowledge and discourse which is overlooked by Butler. I argue that Butler interprets Foucaultian power through the notions of repression and social norms, and ignores the concepts of technology and strategy which form a key part of Foucault‘s thinking. I show how, from The Archaeology of Knowledge on, Foucault develops a socio-historical ontology and a genealogy of the subject, both of which are at variance with Butler‘s interpretation of his thinking.

Heidegger wird neben Sartre, Wittgenstein oder Habermas als eine prägende Gestalt des philosophischen Denkens zitiert, meist im Vorübergehen. Erst in seinem allerletzten Interview bekennt Foucault 1984, daß die Auseinandersetzung mit Heidegger sein eigenes philosophisches Denken angestoßen habe. Man sieht methodische Parallelen zwischen Heideggers Verfallsgeschichte des Abendlandes und Foucaults archäologisch-genealogischer Vernunftkritik. Man spürt gemeinsamen Quellen nach, etwa dem vor-logischen und vor-moralischen Denken der alten Griechen oder dem Machtdenker Nietzsche. Man erkennt gemeinsame Themen wie das Humanismusproblern, Tod und Endlichkeit. Es bleibt dagegen schwierig, trotz der interpretierbaren thematischen Nähe beider Denker zueinander und jenseits der expliziten Verweise Foucaults auf Heidegger, auch im philosophischen Gestus Foucaults eine Rezeption Heideggers anzuerkennen.

Den Anspruch, Philosoph zu sein hat Michel Foucault nur gelegentlich erhoben, gleichwohl ist aus vielen Stellen seiner Schriften und aus seinen Interviews klar, daß er als solcher verstanden werden muß. Die meisten seiner Bücher sind historische Arbeiten, immer allerdings mit einer aktuellen Erkenntnisabsicht verfaßt: als "Archäologien", "Genealogien" und "Problematisierungen" gehören sie dem Projekt einer "Geschichte der Gegenwart" an, dem sich Foucault verschrieben hat. Heute liegt sein Oeuvre, das in Deutschland relativ spät, ab den 70er Jahren aber immer zügiger übersetzt wurde, in Einzelausgaben so gut wie vollständig vor und hat inzwischen zu rückblickenden Betrachtungen eingeladen, die den polemischen Ton druch die Bemühung um eingehendere Lektüre abschwächen. Seit dem Tod des Denkers ist ein Abstand aufgetan, der es ermöglicht, Verständnis und Kritik allein an den Texten zu üben.

Essa difusão, como era de se esperar, terminou por diluir, quando não alterou completamente, o uso que o filósofo Michel Foucault fez do termo, nos anos 1970. Por esse motivo, pareceu-nos interessante fixar, nesta dissertação, o significado ou significados originalmente atribuídos ao termo #biopolítica#, por Foucault, em seus livros, artigos e entrevistas. A pesquisa identificou cinco formulações, relativas a cinco mecanismos de poder distintos: o poder medical, o dispositivo de raça, o dispositivo de sexualidade, o dispositivo de segurança e a governamentalidade neoliberal. Nesta dissertação, reserva-se um capítulo para a análise de cada um destes mecanismos. Na conclusão, busca-se responder à questão a respeito das diferenças e das identidades entre essas cinco acepções de #biopolítica#.

Notre actualité nous interroge sur la compréhension de la guerre et sur le statut de ses relations avec la politique. Ce travail examine cette question et il le fait à partir des réflexions de Michel Foucault sur le sujet. En nous appuyant aux manuscrits inédits du philosophe, conservés dans les archives du « Fonds Foucault » à la Bibliothèque nationale de France, nous montrons que les analyses foucaldiennes sur ce thème, qui n'ont pas toujours reçu la juste attention, jouent en réalité un rôle déterminant dans l’œuvre de l'auteur. À partir de cette première investigation l’on a développé un deuxième parcours de recherche, lié au précédent : les réflexions de Foucault sont mises en relation avec celles de Carl Schmitt – une comparaison entre deux différentes généalogies qui a rarement été établie, sur laquelle la littérature critique reste encore très modeste aujourd'hui. Compte tenu des matériaux non encore publiés, nous montrons que le modèle polémocritique foucaldien se construit sur la base de certaines proximités théoriques importantes autour de la formulation schmittienne de la théorie du politique et se développe comme une critique radicale de celle-ci. Penser Foucault comme critique de Schmitt se révèle non seulement décisif pour comprendre la pensée du philosophe français, mais fondamental aussi pour enquêter l’actualité de ces deux auteurs par rapport à la question de la guerre. C’est finalement ce sujet qui traverse tout au long ce travail<br>The issue of war, its status and its relationship to politics is one of the most pressing key problems of our time. I analyze this subject starting from the reflections of Michel Foucault. By examining the author’s unpublished manuscripts, located at the ‘Fonds Foucault’ at the Bibliothèque nationale de France, I show that although the analysis of war played a decisive role in Foucault’s thought, this subject has not always received adequate attention in scholarship. Following this first line of investigation, I then propose a second line of inquiry, which consists in putting Foucault’s reflections in relation to those of Carl Schmitt: a comparison between two different genealogies which has rarely been examined and on which the critical literature is still scant today. Considering the unpublished materials, I show that the Foucaultian’s polemocritical model has some relevant theoretical proximity to the Schmittian theory of the political, and in fact develops as a radical critique of it. Rethinking Foucault as a critic of Schmitt proves to be not only important in order to understand the French philosopher’s thought, but also fundamental to explore the relevance of these two authors on the topic of war. This is the research question that runs through the entire work<br>La nostra attualità ci interroga sulla comprensione della guerra e sullo statuto del suo rapporto con la politica. Questo lavoro si misura con tale questione e lo fa a partire dalle riflessioni di Michel Foucault sull’argomento. Anche grazie al riferimento ai manoscritti inediti del filosofo francese, conservati presso gli archivi del “Fonds Foucault” alla Bibliothèque nationale de France, si dimostra che le analisi foucaultiane sul tema, le quali non sempre hanno ricevuto un’adeguata attenzione, rivestono in realtà un’importanza decisiva innanzitutto all’interno dell’opera dell’autore. A partire da questo primo piano di indagine viene quindi sviluppato un secondo percorso di ricerca, intrecciato rispetto al precedente: le riflessioni di Foucault vengono messe in relazione con le posizioni di Carl Schmitt – un confronto tra due diverse genealogie che è stato raramente praticato e sul quale la letteratura critica è all’oggi ancora esigua. Tenendo conto dei materiali non ancora pubblicati, viene mostrato infatti che il modello polemocritico foucaultiano si costruisce sulla base di alcune rilevanti prossimità teoriche rispetto alla formulazione schmittiana della teoria del politico e si sviluppa come una critica radicale verso questa. Pensare Foucault come critico di Schmitt si rivela non solo importante ai fini della comprensione del pensiero del filosofo francese, ma anche fondamentale per indagare l’attualità dei due autori rispetto alla questione della guerra. È questa infatti la domanda di ricerca che percorre sottotraccia l’intero lavoro

Foucault picked up Kant's question „What is Enlightenment?" shortly before his early death in 1984. However, his approach of the problem of Enlightenment is far from being philosophical in any traditional way. In all his major historical works the era of enlightenment plays a crucial role in the making of modern thought. Under the heading "classical era" Foucault dealt with the various antagonisms between reason and its other, demonstrating through quite considerable scholarship that no simple answer can be given to Kant's question<br>Eine der ersten Arbeiten des französischen Philosophen Michel Foucault war die Übersetzung und Kommentierung von Immanuel Kants Spätwerk Anthropologie in pragmatischer Absicht; eine seiner letzten Texte bezog sich auf Kants Schrift Was ist Aufklärung? So scheint also die Aufklärung, zumindest die Philosophie der Aufklärung in Kantischer Gestalt, im Werk von Foucault eine prononcierte Bedeutung zu besitzen. Die Beschäftigung damit steht am Anfang und am Ende einer philosophischen Laufbahn, die über Uppsala, Warschau, Hamburg, Clermont-Ferrand und Tunis auf einen der hochangesehenen Lehrstühle des College de France in Paris führt. Hunderte von Seiten hat Foucault dem 17. und dem 18. Jahrhundert gewidmet, ohne dabei allerdings den Begriff der Aufklärung zu benutzen. Es ist gerade diese Umgehung traditiondler historiographischer Schemata, die seine großen Bücher immer noch provokativ erscheinen läßt und ihnen den Geruch subversiver Wissenschaftsprosa anhängt. Was Foucault über die Aufklärung als historisches Phänomen zu sagen hat, ist sozusagen durch seine bewußt angestrengte Revision der traditionellen Einteilungen des historischen Wissens gefiltert

The modifications for the which it passed, were very important in relation with the school practices, taking us to a better understanding about what is today the modern school. Although Foucault has not made a detailed analysis of the schools, he saw them - as well as he saw the formal education - playing a relevant part in the growth of the disciplinary power. This study parts of the subject of how Foucault themed the power about the subject and the relationships of it, specifically in the XVIIth to XIXth centuries, from the difficulties to the appearance of the disciplinary institutions, and, taking out from the disciplinary power, in the institution school, the way those relationships of power are and the use of the mechanisms of discipline in the contemporary school institution. The present study aimed at to explore the meaning and the importance of the idea of power over the body in the analysis "foucaultiana" starting from the XVIIth century, and also to analyze the contribution that the genealogical studies of Foucault had starting from the relationships of power for the education in the school institution, because it is believed that the analysis of disciplinary power guides us to a better understanding of the disciplinary transformations, the relationships of power and the mechanisms used in the institutions, specifically here, in the institution school. The approach proposed in this study is historical, therefore it is a bibliographical study centered in the genealogical texts of Foucault with literature revision, having as main reference the work to Watch and to Punish (FOUCAULT, 1987). In front of the proposed discussion, it was possible to consider that the relationships of power were always present in the education, mainly because the place where, mainly it happens is at the school, and the institution school is fruit of a historical process of hierarchy, disciplines, normalizations among others. Therefore, note could be that the model of the disciplinary institutions presented by Foucault, from the appearance of the institution school, didn't change a lot, because it is what still today is developed with certain adaptations and innovations, but it doesn't flee to the traditional structure. The society equally, didn't change a lot. It is observed that there were just a change of pictures and government representations, but the hierarchical relationships of power continue, maybe, on a subtler and diplomat way.<br>A escola, entre todas as instituições disciplinares, é o resultado de um processo histórico e de transformações advindas desde o século XVII, sendo considerada como o espaço, primordialmente, educacional que visa à formação do indivíduo. As modificações pelas quais passou, foram importantíssimas em relação às práticas escolares, nos levando a uma melhor compreensão do que é hoje a escola moderna. Embora Foucault não tenha feito uma análise detalhada das escolas, ele as via - como também via a educação formal - desempenhando um papel relevante no crescimento do poder disciplinar. Este estudo parte da questão de como Foucault tematizou o poder sobre o sujeito e as relações do mesmo, especificamente nos séculos XVII ao XIX, desde os suplícios até o surgimento das instituições disciplinares, e, partindo do poder disciplinar, na instituição escola, como são essas relações de poder e a utilização dos mecanismos disciplinares na instituição escolar contemporânea. O presente estudo objetivou explorar o significado e a importância da idéia de poder sobre o corpo na análise foucaultiana a partir do século XVII, e também analisar a contribuição que tiveram os estudos genealógicos de Foucault a partir das relações de poder para a educação na instituição escolar, pois se acredita que a análise do poder disciplinar nos orienta a uma melhor compreensão das transformações disciplinares, as relações de poder e os mecanismos utilizados nas instituições, especificamente aqui, na instituição escola. A abordagem proposta neste estudo é histórica, portanto trata-se de um estudo bibliográfico centrado nos textos genealógicos de Foucault com revisão de literatura, tendo como principal referência a obra Vigiar e Punir (FOUCAULT, 1987). Diante da discussão proposta, foi possível considerar que as relações de poder sempre estiveram presentes na educação, principalmente porque o lugar onde, por excelência, esta ocorre é na escola, e a instituição escola é fruto de um processo histórico de hierarquia, disciplinas, normalizações entre outras. Portanto o que se pôde perceber foi que o modelo das instituições disciplinares apresentado por Foucault, desde o surgimento da instituição escola, não mudou muito, pois é o que ainda hoje é desenvolvido com certas adaptações e inovações, mas que não foge à estrutura tradicional. A sociedade igualmente, não mudou muito. Observa-se que houve apenas uma troca de figuras e representações governamentais, mas as relações hierárquicas de poder continuam talvez de uma forma mais sutil e diplomática.

Also a possible reading of the work History of Madness: The Classical Age (2009) to correlate the construct of language and literature of madness, showing that they return after a silence.<br>Esta dissertação apresenta uma análise da linguagem e seus desdobramentos na modernidade. Afirma-se numa leitura sobre o estatuto da linguagem, da linguagem da loucura e da literatura. Evidencia as relações suscetíveis destas linguagens em três momentos: Renascença, Classicismo e Modernidade. Para conduzir essa análise, a base teórica será o livro As palavras e as Coisas e Ditos e escritos III de Michel Foucault (1992, 2006), que sedimentam princípios inerentes ao Retorno da linguagem. Também uma leitura possível da obra História da loucura: Na Idade Clássica (2009) para correlacionar o construto da linguagem da loucura e literatura, mostrando que estas retornam após um silenciamento.

However, his approach of the problem of Enlightenment is far from being philosophical in any traditional way. In all his major historical works the era of enlightenment plays a crucial role in the making of modern thought. Under the heading "classical era" Foucault dealt with the various antagonisms between reason and its other, demonstrating through quite considerable scholarship that no simple answer can be given to Kant''s question.<br>Eine der ersten Arbeiten des französischen Philosophen Michel Foucault war die Übersetzung und Kommentierung von Immanuel Kants Spätwerk Anthropologie in pragmatischer Absicht; eine seiner letzten Texte bezog sich auf Kants Schrift Was ist Aufklärung? So scheint also die Aufklärung, zumindest die Philosophie der Aufklärung in Kantischer Gestalt, im Werk von Foucault eine prononcierte Bedeutung zu besitzen. Die Beschäftigung damit steht am Anfang und am Ende einer philosophischen Laufbahn, die über Uppsala, Warschau, Hamburg, Clermont-Ferrand und Tunis auf einen der hochangesehenen Lehrstühle des College de France in Paris führt. Hunderte von Seiten hat Foucault dem 17. und dem 18. Jahrhundert gewidmet, ohne dabei allerdings den Begriff der Aufklärung zu benutzen. Secondly, I discuss how marxism and essentialism share the same predicament of falling into the `patriarchal trap' of narrowingly defining women's identities, their roles in society, and omitting or undervaluing their contributions. Finally, I give an exegesis of the events of the `Royce-Abbot Affair.' I provide an understanding of these events by drawing on wide-ranging interpretations, critiquing each account, and offering my own interpretation.

Mon travail concerne l'éthique de Michel Foucault. Un texte des "marginalia" de Foucault a été déterminant pour mon projet. Il s'agit d'une interview accordée par Foucault a un étudiant de Berkeley (1980). Invité à se prononcer sur son prétendu nihilisme, Foucault répond indigne qu’il est plutôt un moraliste: "dans un sens, je suis un moraliste, dans la mesure où je crois que l'une des taches, un des sens de l'existence humaine -et c'est en quoi consiste la liberté de l'homme - c'est de ne jamais rien accepter comme définitif, intouchable, évident, immobile. Rien du réel ne doit nous faire une loi définitive et inhumaine". Plus loin Foucault continue: ""les trois éléments de ma morale, je les cite: (1) c'est le refus d'accepter comme allant de soi ce qui nous est proposé; (2) nécessité d'analyser et de savoir, car rien de ce que nous avons à faire ne peut être fait sans réflexion; (3) principe d'innovation: chercher dans notre réflexion ce qui n'a jamais été pensé ou imaginé. If one considers the thesis bibliography, it's possible to understand that Foucault’s work considered by me as more important of his thought is not always proposed by Foucault’s books; many articles and interviews elucidate the aims and trajectory of Foucault. This is the reason why they play an important role in the thesis. During one of his stays in Berkeley (October 1980), Foucault explain the themes of his ethics: "I am a moralist, insofar as a believe that one of the tasks, one of the meanings of human existence - the source of human freedom - is never to accept anything as definitiven untouchable, obvious or immobile" (history of the present, spring 1980). In this interview conducted by m. Bess, Foucault exposes the three elements of his moral thought. Le concept de gouvernementalité forgé par Michel Foucault est de plus en plus populaire non seulement auprès des philosophes, mais aussi auprès des sociologues, politologues, économistes, anthropologues et plusieurs autres spécialistes appartenant à ce que nous nommons les «sciences humaines». Pourtant, les origines, les recherches et les pistes de réflexion liées à ce concept au sein même du travail de Michel Foucault sont plutôt mal connues. Le présent mémoire tentera d'expliquer ce que signifie ce concept dans les travaux de ce penseur. Nous explorerons plus précisément le parcours qu'emprunta Michel Foucault dans sa théorisation du pouvoir l'amenant vers ses vues généalogiques. De là, nous analyserons les éléments relatifs au déploiement d'une «microphysique du pouvoir» dégageant les configurations stratégiques du pouvoir de souveraineté, du régime disciplinaire et du biopouvoir. Partant d'une double critique contre l'emploi de cette «microphysique», nous étudierons ensuite l'entrée de l'État dans cette grille d'analyse, menant Foucault à conceptualiser les relations de pouvoir et de subjectivation en terme de gouvernement, de résistance et de pratiques de liberté. En examinant les principaux textes de Michel Foucault, de même que son enseignement au Collège de France entre 1970 et 1984, nous suggérerons que le projet de cette analyse généalogique de la rationalité gouvernementale occidentale -- qui remonte jusqu'aux sources grecques et bibliques -- se veut à la fois le relais, l'approfondissement et le dépassement de ses analyses du pouvoir, du sujet, de la liberté et de la résistance.

O primeiro persegue os temas da retórica, sofística e microfísica, enfatizando a relação entre estes três pontos e o lugar ocupado pela discursividade do próprio Foucault. O segundo consiste em acompanhar detidamente A arqueologia do saber nos aspectos relativos às práticas discursivas e à linguagem. O último escolhe um caso específico, o da literatura, para discutir os lugares que ela ocupa entre práticas discursivas. Apesar da aparente separação, procurou-se relacionar elementos dos três caminhos abordados, com o intuito de dar conta do problema da linguagem e do discurso, segundo os caminhos de Foucault em um recorte que nos parece crucial - a virada para a década de 1970. Com isso, esperamos ampliar o escopo da discussão sobre linguagem, que este trabalho procura suscitar.<br>This dissertation walks through three itineraries on language, via Foucault. The first deals with rhetoric, sophistry and microphysics, emphasizing the relation between them and the place occupied by Foucault s own discursivity. The second closely follows The Archaeology of Knowledge in regards to discursive practices and language. The last one dwells on the specific case of literature, discussing its place amongst discursive practices. Despite their apparent embranchment, we ve tried bringing these three pathways together, trying to handle language s and speech trouble, by ways of Foucault into a crucial cutting – the turn to 70 s. Les recherches foucaldiennes sur la question du sujet, du sujet de connaissance et de la subjectivité se manifestent depuis ses premières études sur la folie à l’âge classique, en passant par les archéologies des sciences humaines à l’âge classique et moderne, jusqu’à ses derniers recherches imparfaites sur la parrêsia de l’Antiquité au christianisme. La découverte foucaldienne des dispositions historiques du sujet ne sert pas à ruiner la subjectivité, la volonté ou la liberté de l’individu, mais à réélaborer la question traditionnelle du sujet universel en la replaçant dans l’histoire d’une manière non pas du primat mais du fonctionnement du sujet. Ainsi les problématisations du sujet se trouvent dans son rapport à la vérité comme une relation de véridiction, dans son rapport au pouvoir comme une relation de gouvernementalité (de soi et des autres), dans son rapport à soi comme une relation de spiritualité. Ce sont ces trois rapports variables à chaque époque et pour chaque individu qui constituent une généalogie de la question du sujet. Dans ces multiples modalités du sujet, dans cette ontologie historique de nous-mêmes, nous découvrons une sorte de liberté, d’espace du sujet, d’unité de notre subjectivité qui ne peut s’appliquer que de manière individuelle et vigilante. Thus the foucauldian problematizations of subject can be found in its relation to the truth as a veridiction relationship, in its relation to the power as a governmentality relationship (of self and of others), in its relation to oneself as a spiritual relationship. These three variables relationships for each period and for each individual establish a genealogy of the subject. In these multiple modalities of the subject, in this historical ontology of ourselves, we could find a kind of freedom, a place of the subject, the integrity of subjectivity which can only be applied individually and vigilant manner. This thesis defends an ontological and epistemological account of Michel Foucault's post-structuralist philosophy, to argue that political philosophy needs to take into account the historical and political contingency of subjectivity and discourse. I show that by addressing the historical and political contingency of knowledge, Foucault's work overcomes the flaw of foundational epistemology in political philosophy, which treats true discourse as universal and disinterested. In doing so I hope to have to refuted the mainly positivistic and humanist schools of thought that lay claim to universal and foundationalist notions, by demonstrating the extent to which their misgivings about Foucault's work are informed by and founded upon an unjustified a-historicism. The thesis is composed of three chapters, the first of which deals with an ontology of the subject, the second, with an ontology of social relations, and the last with epistemology. In each chapter I use dialectical analysis to reveal how interests necessarily mediate subjectivity, social relations, and knowledge. The first two chapters defend Foucault's conception of power, by way of an analysis of the relations between Foucault's work and Sartre's existential phenomenology. I show how both Foucault and Sartre successfully address the problem of historicism for political philosophy with their respective conceptions of human freedom. The final chapter defends Foucault's conception of the relations between power and discourse, to show how it overcomes the a-historicism of universal, foundational epistemology. These three chapters demonstrate the importance of accounting for historicism in political philosophy. Claims to universal interest, because knowledge is conditioned by conflicts of interest, often mask political domination. It is important, then, to remember, in political philosophy, that knowledge is evaluative and interested, reflecting historically and politically mediated evaluations. One should be suspicious of ' natural facts' , used to justify actions or beliefs, thereby masking the choices that inform them. I have used the work of Michel Foucault to motivate this claim.

La notion de modernité a un sens déterminant dans sa pensée. Foucault utilise le mot, non pas comme un nom commun, mais comme un nom propre, c'est-à-dire foucaldien. Foucault en donne des définitions à la fois historiques et philosophiques précises. Mais, les mots moderne et modernité chez Foucault ont néanmoins plusieurs sens différents. Concernant le mot moderne, nous avons distingué deux usages différents : d'abord, l'usage conventionnel du terme comme de la formule "la biologie moderne. " Dans ce premier cas, le mot moderne suit son usage conventionnel sans aucun changement de sens qui décrit une période dans l'histoire. Ensuite, il y a l'usage épistémique du terme comme dans les expressions "l'homme moderne" ou "le seuil du monde moderne. " Dans ce deuxième cas, le mot moderne subit un changement de sens considérable dans la mesure où Foucault utilise le mot uniquement par rapport à l'épistémè moderne qui a un sens bien particulier, c'est-à-dire foucaldien. Concernant le mot modernité, nous avons également détecté deux usages différents : d'abord, tout comme le mot moderne, il y a l'usage conventionnel du terme comme dans l’expression "la modernité de la médecine. " Dans ce premier cas, nous pouvons dire que c'est une simple expansion de l'usage conventionnel du mot moderne dans le sens où il désigne une périodisation, c'est-à-dire l'époque moderne. Le deuxième est ce que nous avons nommé l'usage éthique du terme dans la mesure où il désigne une attitude ou un êthos comme dans la formule "l'attitude de modernité. Les références au christianisme sont constantes dans l’oeuvre de Michel Foucault. Cette constance s’inscrit dans un questionnement philosophique plus large sur notre actualité : comprendre ce qui, aujourd’hui, nous constitue sujets de nous-mêmes, dans des rapports de savoir et de pouvoir, demande en effet de s’interroger sur la spécificité du rapport à soi que l’Occident a défini depuis les premiers siècles chrétiens. Notre thèse propose une étude critique de l’ensemble de ces références chrétiennes, mettant en lumière leurs règles de lecture et d’interprétation, avec une attention particulière portée au cours inédit Du gouvernement des vivants (1979-1980). Trois temps scandent un parcours qui ne se veut pas chronologique : 1) objets, 2) lectures, 3) interprétations. La première partie de notre travail montre comment le christianisme est devenu, à partir de 1978, un objet d’étude à part entière pour Foucault, malgré la dissolution des grandes entités historiques initialement provoquée par l’archéologie et la généalogie. Deux notions nouvelles ont permis une analyse du phénomène chrétien sur une longue durée, sans présupposer une quelconque essence du christianisme : la « gouvernementalité » (cours Sécurité, territoire, population en 1977-1978) et les « régimes de vérité » (cours Du gouvernement des vivants en 1979-1980). Cette dernière notion découpe dans les pratiques chrétiennes un certain type d’actes réfléchis : ceux par lesquels un sujet manifeste la vérité de ce qu’il est. La deuxième partie s’attache à la manière dont le philosophe lit les écrits chrétiens, avec des déplacements méthodologiques importants dans la manière de recevoir ces textes. Le corpus patristique, objet de plusieurs leçons au Collège de France en 1978 et 1980, permet non seulement une étude synthétique des sources utilisées par Foucault (sources primaires et secondaires), mais également une compréhension fine de ses pratiques de traduction, au plus près du lexique original des textes. Dans la troisième partie, nous nous efforçons de ressaisir l’interprétation générale que le philosophe donne du christianisme, des études sur la folie et la littérature des années 1960 à celles consacrées aux « techniques de vie » à partir de 1980. Cette interprétation ne se construit pas d’elle-même, mais toujours en regard de l’Antiquité gréco-romaine. Loin de l’image facile d’un christianisme ascétique et intransigeant, Foucault définit l’originalité chrétienne comme la reconnaissance et l’institution paradoxale d’un rapport précaire à la vérité<br>There are constant references to Christianity in Michel Foucault’s work. This continuing interest forms part of a wider philosophical questioning of our present: the effort to understand what constitutes us, today, as subjects of ourselves, within relations of knowledge and power, requires an interrogation about the specificity of the relation to self which the West has since the early centuries of the Christian era. Our thesis proposes a comprehensive critical study of these Christian references in Foucault, seeking to throw light on their rules of reading and interpretation, and paying particular attention to the unpublished lecture series Du gouvernment des vivants (1979-80). The study is partitioned into three levels, not arranged in strict chronological sequence: (1) objects ; (2) readings ; (3) interpretations. The first part of our work shows how Christianity became, from 1978, a whole object of study for Foucault, exempt from the general dissolution of major historical entities which had been initially an effect of his aracheological and genealogical methods. An analysis of the Christian phenomenon over a long timespan was made possible by two notions which make it possible to avoid the pitfalls of essentialism: « governmentality » (introduced in Security, Territoty, population) and « regimes of truth » (in « Du gouvernement des vivants »). The second part pays attention to the way our philosopher reads the Christian texts, one which is marked by distinctive inflexions over the whole course of his trajectory. Looking at the handling of he patristic corpus, which forms the topic of several lectures in 1978 and 1980, we can survey not only Foucault’s choice of primary and secondary sources, but also examine in detail his translating practice. In the third part, we try finally to encompass Foucault’ general interpretation of Christianity, from the early studies on madness and literature in the 1960s to those of the 1980s devoted to techniques of living. This interpretation does not develop by itself, but is always juxtaposed to considerations on Greco-Roman antiquity. Far from offering a facile image of an ascetic and intransigent Christianity, Foucault defines Christianity’s originality as the recognition and paradoxical institution of an instrinsically fragile relation to truth

This thesis examines the philosopher Michel Foucault’s view of painting as an experience. I study Foucault’s essay on Velázquez’s painting Las Meninas and his lecture on Manet in light of his view that the relation between images and texts, as well as between what can be uttered and what can be seen, are to be understood as symptoms of a variable structure of experience. I explore Foucault’s claim that concepts shape our experience by comparing his descriptions of the beholder’s experience of light and space in these paintings with his theory of representation in The Order of Things. Further, I analyze the specific role of painting in Foucault’s philosophy, as amediator of historical experiences. This study shows that, according to Foucault, the structure dominating both experience and knowledge in the early modern period was predominantly visual. Towards the end of this period images came closer to text, corresponding to a shift in the human sciences towards methods of interpretation rather than visual observation. This can be understood in terms of a new form of sensibility. This thesis challenges the interpretation that Foucault holds there to be a sharp discontinuity in experience by showing how painting, as an experience, transgresses epistemological boundaries. I claim that this experience appears through Foucault’s way of carefully examining and describing a visual experience of an image.

Dès que l'on prononce le mot "dialectique" on commence à accepter, même si on ne le dit pas, le schéma hégélien de la thèse et de l'antithèse, et avec lui une forme de logique qui me paraît inadéquate, si l'on veut donner de ces problèmes une description vraiment concrète. », les mouvements dus aux déterminations de la pensée qui iraient du plan d'immanence du "penser" vers les modes de conceptualisation. De nombreux philosophes ont attribué à Foucault différentes périodes d'évolution de sa pensée. J'ai donc commencé mon étude en présupposant que Foucault a travaillé tout au long de sa vie autour du même plan d'immanence et qu'il a tenté sans cesse de le signifier à partir de la connaissance de différentes disciplines dans les modes socio-historiques. Et j'ai tenté de comprendre ce mouvement, qui va du plan d'immanence à une conceptualisation de sa pensée construite autour de la tradition critique. Foucault veut démontrer que la philosophie a construit le sujet et a bâti un édifice de la conscience humaine. La dialectique s'est présentée comme le point central de cet édifice. And I tried to understand this movement which goes from the level of immanence to a conceptualization of his thinking built around the critical tradition. Foucault wants to proof that philosophy constructed the subject and a system of the human conscience. The dialectics presents itself as the central point of this system. How to understand the presence of the concept by knowing that above all it is the result of the overlapping connection of subject in the socio-history thinking?

La radicalité des critiques foucaldiennes aurait impliqué, d’une part, un certain éloignement des psychanalystes de ses travaux et, d’autre part, que ses lecteurs prennent une certaine distance de la lettre freudienne. Un détail fondamental à la compréhension de cette difficile interlocution: les références du philosophe au «complexe d’Oedipe» furent toujours formulées sans qu’il ne présente à ses lecteurs aucune citation de Freud. The radicalism of Foucault's critics would have implied, on the one hand, a certain distance from the psychoanalysts of his works and, on the other hand, that his readers take a certain distance from the Freudian letter. A fundamental detail to the understanding of this difficult interlocution: the references of the philosopher to the "Oedipus complex" were always formulated without presenting to his readers any quote from Freud. From within his own text, which systematically refers to the work of the psychoanalyst, Foucault summoned each time his interlocutor without ever giving him the floor. What reading of Freud would he have done? How could he write so much on the "Oedipus complex" without ever mentioning Freud? Inicialmente, pretende-se expor o contexto em que as ideias de Mises emergiram a fim de compreender a influência que tais circunstâncias tiveram em sua obra. Em seguida, são expostos os mais importantes pressupostos epistemológicos de sua visão econômica, determinando a emergência de uma nova ciência, a praxeologia, baseada no individualismo metodológico. A partir da sistematização de uma nova abordagem dos problemas econômicos dentro de um sistema ainda mais amplo, busca-se compreender a defesa do autor do livre-mercado. Na sequência são abordados os principais sistemas de ordenamento social concebidos por Mises, com ênfase em sua visão do liberalismo. Este estudo ainda analisa a impossibilidade intrínseca de funcionamento de um sistema socialista, além de demonstrar como, na visão do autor, um sistema intervencionista tende ao socialismo e ao controle estatal dos meios de produção. Considerando que tais sistemas se distinguem, em especial, pelo grau de intervencionismo estatal, será explicada a visão do autor sobre o estado, com destaque para as funções que Mises entende para tal entidade. Apresentar-se-á, ainda, a questão dos limites para a intervenção estatal, focando em um conflito entre tal intervenção e a liberdade individual. Por fim, serão expostos os principais pontos abordados por Foucault acerca do liberalismo, desde sua emergência até o desenvolvimento daquilo que ele chama de neoliberalismo. Dentro deste último ponto serão analisados os principais tipos de neoliberalismo expostos por Foucault, o neoliberalismo americano e o ordoliberalismo, destacando suas similitudes e diferenças, a partir das condições de possiblidade de suas emergências. Demonstra-se como Ludwiig von Mises se diferencia destes neoliberalismo, seja pelos seus princípios epistemológicos, seja pela justificativa para seu laissez-faire. Por fim, destaca-se alguns pontos de convergência entre o pensamento de Mises e de Foucault. In particular, the aim is to investigate both's authors ideas regarding the conditions of emergence and possibility of liberalism. Initially, Mises's historical context is studied in order to understand the influence that some circumstances had on his work. Next, the most important epistemological assumptions of his economic vision are presented, insofar as they determined the emergence of a new science, praxeology, which was based on his methodological individualism. From the systematization of a new approach to economic problems within an even broader system, we seek to understand the author's defense of free market. In what follows, the main systems of social order conceived by Mises are described emphasizing his view on liberalism. This study also analyzes Mises's view of an intrinsic impossibility of a socialist system due to the fact that, in his conception, an interventionist system tends to the control of the means of production by state. Considering that such systems are distinct, mainly because of the degree of state intervention, the author's view on state will be explained, emphazising Mises's understanding about the functions of such an entity. We will also present the question of the limits of state intervention, focusing on a conflict between intervention and individual freedom. Finally, Foucault's genealogy of liberalism - from its emergence to the development of what he calls neoliberalism - will be exposed. Foucault's proposal regarding the main types of neoliberalism - the american neoliberalism and the ordoliberalism - is investigated, highlighting their similarities and differences in what concerns the conditions of possibility of their emergencies and existence. It is argued that Ludwig von Mises's liberalism differs from these neoliberalisms, either becuase of their epistemological principles or by the justification for laissez-faire. This last work, at the same time philosophical and related to historical science, has as its main goal (defined in its subtitle) to accomplish an archeology of the human sciences. The stretching of his investigation field to study the human sciences can be understood as a natural thematic progression of Foucault s research about the archeology of history. Since Madness and Civilization, Foucault has been always interested in showing how our culture sought to understand what was the fundamentally the other in man. In The Order of Things, taking as a starting-point the study of certain strategies that man used to comprehend himself, Foucault has constructed his archeological history stressing the discontinuities that ended up presenting our own culture as strange to us. It is about the philosophical problem of the historical discontinuities signalized by Foucault and its relation to a traditional, continued and dialectical history that this thesis will deal in its chapters, attempting to understand the philosophical position of this new way of writing history.<br>Esta tese de doutorado tem por objetivo analisar o estatuto filosófico da história arqueológica empreendida por Michel Foucault em duas de suas principais obras: História da Loucura e As Palavras e as Coisas. Esta última obra, simultaneamente filosófica e de história das ciências, tem o objetivo (definido em seu subtítulo) de realizar uma arqueologia das ciências humanas. Tal intuito de estender o domínio de sua investigação para dar conta das ciências do homem pode ser compreendido como um prolongamento temático natural da pesquisa histórica foucaultiana. Pois desde a História da Loucura Foucault sempre esteve interessado em fazer aparecer o modo como nossa cultura procurou encerrar e significar o que era fundamentalmente outro no homem. Voltando-se, em As Palavras e as Coisas, às estratégias que o homem buscou para compreender a si mesmo, Foucault traça sua história arqueológica assinalando-a com descontinuidades que fazem com que nossa cultura nos pareça estranha a nós próprios. É sobre o estatuto filosófico das descontinuidades assinaladas por Foucault e sua relação com uma história tradicional, contínua e dialética que a tese versará, ao longo de seus capítulos, na tentativa de diagnosticar a postura filosófica desse novo modo de escrever a história.

Ce projet a l'objetif d'examiner la formulation, les facteurs et les conséquences rapportés aux différentes démarches utilisées par Foucault dans ses critiques aux «anthropologies», figurées dans la trajectoire des textes publiés pendant les années 1950 et 1960. La question principale est le problème «anthropologique»: dans les textes parus en 1954, Foucault a entrepris un double projet de contestation et fondation des sciences humaines; le jeune philosophe essayait de corriger les perspectives considerées par lui comme des perspectives erronées, pour en établir une nouvelle anthropologie finalement rigoreuse. Par contre, d'une façon relativement vite les projets de fondation ont eté remplacés pour des suspicions et donc il y a eu un changement de la façon d'énoncer le problème anthropologique: au lieu d'être «solution», la question anthropologique commence à devenir un domaine plein de problèmes. L'essay de fonder donne place à un ensemble d'analyses qui dénoncent plusieurs engagements historiquements faits pour les connaissances anthropologiques. La recherche realisée essaye d'analyser ce passage de la «solution» au «problème», en croisant la lecture de certains matériaux: les textes publiés par Foucault pendant les années 50 (et quelques textes des annés 60), les débats contemporains et les discussions sur lesquelles ces textes ont essayé d'entrer, et aussi quelques notes écrites par Jacques Lagrange pendant les cours donnés par Foucault à l'Ecole Normale Supérieure depuis 1953 jusqu'à 1955. Le croisement de références a l'objetif de voir le contexte des problèmes probablement vus par Foucault dans les textes de 1954, et le chemin parcouru par lui, jusqu'àux questions enoncées dans les textes de 1957 et l'écriture à Uppsala de la thèse principale sur l'histoire de la folie.<br>A presente pesquisa de doutorado resulta de um projeto maior, intitulado Sobre a Morte do Homem e a Psicologia, em Michel Foucault . Esse projeto busca analisar a formulação, as nuances e consequências das diversas argumentações empregadas por Foucault nas críticas às antropologias , figuradas na trajetória dos textos dos anos 50 e 60. O eixo é o problema antropológico : nos textos de 1954, Foucault empreendia um duplo projeto de contestação e fundação das ciências humanas, buscando corrigir perspectivas consideradas errôneas em prol de uma antropologia isenta de prejuízos. Esses projetos de fundação rapidamente cedem lugar a suspeitas e à recolocação do problema antropológico: mais do que solução , a questão antropológica começa a se delinear como um núcleo de problemas. A postura de fundação e contestação cederá lugar a um conjunto de análises que denunciam as antropologias a partir de seus compromissos históricos. A presente pesquisa tenta analisar essa passagem da solução ao problema , tomando como base alguns materiais: os textos de Foucault contemporâneos e posteriores, os debates aos quais esses textos tentavam se inserir, e também algumas anotações de Jacques Lagrange aos cursos ministrados por Foucault na École Normale Supérieure entre 1953 e 1955. O entrecruzamento de referências serve para extrair os problemas que Foucault enxerga nos textos de 1954, buscando delinear de que modo esses problemas conduzem às interrogações dos textos de 1957 e à escrita, em Uppsala, da Tese Principal sobre a história da loucura.

Pour ce faire, nous prétendons révéler l&#8223;archéologie à l&#8223;oeuvre dans la généalogie. Cela s&#8223;observe particulièrement, c&#8223;est ce que nous nous proposons d&#8223;étudier, dans la présence de l&#8223;épistémè (concept largement discuté dans l&#8223;oeuvre Les mots et les choses) dans les mécanismes de pouvoir présents durant le classicisme et la modernité. Ainsi, nous visons à observer la relation entre « l&#8223;ère de la représentation », historiquement attribuée à la période classique des XVIIe et XVIIIe siècles, et « l&#8223;ère de l&#8223;histoire » contenue entre les XIXe et XXe siècles, appelée également modernité par Foucault, et leurs savoirs et pouvoirs contemporains respectifs. Dans un premier temps, nous vérifions la relation entre l&#8223;épistémè classique et les autres savoirs discutés par le philosophe pendant le classicisme de la période archéologique. Ensuite, nous vérifions la relation qui se joue entre pouvoir et savoir durant la période citée précédemment pour nous approcher de l&#8223;archéologie de la généalogie. Dans un second temps, notre recherche, procédant analogiquement, se consacre à l&#8223;analyse de la modernité. Cela favorise le rapprochement entre épistémè d&#8223;une part et les autres savoirs discutés durant la période archéologique d&#8223;autre part, de même que cela induit la vérification de la relation entre archéologie et généalogie dans la constitution du sujet moderne.<br>Este trabalho visa analisar a constituição do sujeito moderno no pensamento de Michel Foucault. Para tanto, pretendemos desdobrar a arqueologia sobre a genealogia. Isto é, propomo-nos, sobretudo, a observar a presença da epistémê (conceito amplamente discutido na obra As Palavras e as Coisas ) nos mecanismos de poder presentes no classicismo e na modernidade. Assim, visamos observar a relação entre a era da representação (historicamente atribuìda ao perìodo clássico: séculos XVII e XVIII) e a era da história (contida nos séculos XIX e XX, também denominada por Foucault de modernidade) e seus respectivos e contemporâneos saberes e poderes. Inicialmente, verificamos a relação entre a epistémê clássica e os demais saberes discutidos pelo filósofo no classicismo no interior do período arqueológico. Em seguida, verificamos a relação entre o poder e o saber no período supracitado aproximando a arqueologia da genealogia. Em um segundo momento, nossa pesquisa, procedendo de forma análoga, analisa a modernidade. Isto é, promove a aproximação entre a epistémê e os demais saberes discutidos no período arqueológico; e, posteriormente verifica a relação entre a arqueologia e a genealogia na constituição do sujeito.

Les écrits pionniers de l´auteur, ceux qui sont considérés comme antérieurs à la première formulation de l'archéologie du savoir, s´affilient aux présupposés de la phénoménologie, dont l'objet de recherche aurait été étendue par une psychologie existentielle que Foucault s´avait dédié à étudier sur un point de vue historique. Limitée à ce contexte, une notion précise de littérature se profilait dans l'horizon théorique de l'auteur. Cependant, avec le tournant archéologique qui aurait été reformuler ces présupposés phénoménologique jusqu'alors admis, Foucault passerait à concevoir la littérature autrement. C'est à ce concept spécifique de la littérature, désormais crié par l'auteur, que cette étude se propose à explorer. À cette fin, on se soutient sur deux autres notions qui mantiennent avec la littérature une relation très intime: la notion d'espace et la notion de dehors. Si la littérature cherche à composer une espace propre, autonome par rapport à tous les autres espaces, elle est aussi à la limite de tous les autres, en les attirant au dehors d´eux-mêmes, en se mêlant avec eux et en les subvertant. Il est concevable qu'une telle tension établi dans l´espace littéraire qui reste au dehors de tous les autres espaces et, au même temps, aux limites de ses virtualités, le remet à une condition paradigmatique, qui pourrait trouver des correlats en d´autres moments de la production foucauldienne.<br>A presente Dissertação visa explorar as condições apresentadas pela obra de Michel Foucault à constituição de um conceito de literatura como alternativa à opção oferecida pela fenomenologia e pelo existencialismo. Os escritos pioneiros do autor, aqueles considerados como anteriores à primeira formulação da arqueologia do saber, filiavam-se aos pressupostos de uma fenomenologia, cujo objeto de pesquisa teria sido ampliado por uma psicologia existencial, a qual Foucault se dedicava a estudar a partir de uma perspectiva histórica. Circunscrita a esse âmbito, uma noção precisa de literatura se perfilava no horizonte teórico do autor. No entanto, com a guinada arqueológica a qual viria reformular aqueles pressupostos fenomenológicos até então admitidos, Foucault passaria a conceber a literatura de modo diverso. É a esse conceito específico de literatura então criado pelo autor que este estudo se propõe dedicar. Para tanto, busca-se auxílio em duas outras noções que manteriam com a literatura uma relação íntima: a noção de espaço e a noção de fora. Se a literatura busca compor um espaço próprio, autônomo ante a todos os outros espaços, ela igualmente está no limite de todos os outros, atraindo-os para fora de si mesmos, entrelaçando-se com eles e os subvertendo. É possível pensar que uma tal tensão estabelecida no espaço literário o qual se mantém fora de todos os outros espaços e, ao mesmo tempo, na virtualidade dos seus limites, remete-o a uma condição paradigmática, a qual poderia encontrar correlatos noutros momentos da produção foucaultiana.

This paper focuses on the role freedom plays in Michel Foucault’s analyze of liberal and particularely neoliberal governmentalities. From his perspective, neoliberalism operates through the strategic production of entrepreneural subjectivity and distribution of self-governing. Here autonomy is central for governing, which raises questions about what freedom can mean at all in Foucault, and how resistance can be possible. Through Foucault’s thinking on liberal freedom, we can gain a better understanding of his philosophy on subjectivation and resistance.

L'objet de ce travail est de reconsidérer l'oeuvre de Michel Foucault à la lumière d'une notion dont il s'agira de montrer toute la force et l'intérêt : la pratique. Notion intensive et plastique et non concept unificateur. Effectivement, à une époque où la pratique apparaît comme un concept philosophiquement, sociologiquement et politiquement surdéterminé, Foucault emprunte une voie singulière, refusant d'attribuer à la pratique aussi bien une fonction synthétique qu'une portée théorique, et ce, particulièrement au plus fort du moment doublement central de son oeuvre - le début des années 1970 - moment pratique que ce travail cherche à isoler et à redéployer. Un tel refus de la synthèse théorique est précisément lié à l'originalité de la démarche suivie par Foucault et à la nature des champs qu'il explore. Dès lors, c'est la genèse de l'oeuvre qui, au prisme de cette hypothèse, est susceptible de recevoir un éclairage nouveau. Si les premiers travaux se caractérisent en effet par un primat de l'expérience, on assiste progressivement au mouvement par lequel la pratique se dégage de l'expérience pour atteindre le moment critique d'un effondrement de la théorie dans la pratique, cette dernière se redéployant finalement dans les "pratiques de soi". A la faveur de ce parcours qui pointe les éléments significatifs pour la pratique, on aperçoit alors que, dans le sillage des deux moments majeurs de l'oeuvre de Foucault que sont Les Mots et les choses d'une part, Surveiller et punir et La Volonté de savoir d'autre part, tous les enjeux critiques se cristallisent autour du statut accordé à la pratique, preuve de son importance pour saisir le geste foucaldien.

A espacialidade da linguagem, como buscaremos demonstrar, é um tema com base no qual o filósofo encontrou um lugar diferenciado na tradição e entre seus contemporâneos. A sua relevância é ainda pouco reconhecida para a compreensão de sua obra e das características e das tarefas, também obscuras, do pensamento atual. Conhecer a relação íntima estabelecida por Foucault entre a linguagem e o espaço é encontrar referências – belas, perspicazes e históricas – para a lida com nossos limites.<br>This thesis brings together the thoughts of Michel Foucault on language and emphasizes the explicit and implicit relationships between this concept and space. The spatiality of language, as we will try to show, is a subject upon which the philosopher has found a distinct place in the tradition and among his contemporaries. Its relevance is still poorly recognized for the understanding of his work and the characteristics and tasks, also obscure, of the current thinking. Knowing the intimate relationship established by Foucault between language and space is to find references – beautiful, insightful and historical – to deal with our limits.

Dans Surveiller et Punir, Michel Foucault met en avant le fait que les peines prononcées contre les condamnés, qui s’exerçaient autrefois directement sur leur corps, s’exercent à présent sur leur âme, et plus précisément sur leur volonté. Changer l’individu par la norme en exerçant une influence sur sa volonté propre, laquelle est pourtant communément associée à un caractère irréductible, tel est le défi paradoxal du pouvoir normatif, du moins des relations ou rapports de pouvoir définis par Foucault. À travers une approche sociologique, psychologique, l’individu est appréhendé par l’autorité judiciaire comme s’il était en grande partie le fruit d’un déterminisme. C’est en changeant son milieu que l’on pourrait changer son comportement, que l’on ferait de sa volonté hors norme une volonté normée. Cependant, ces tentatives présentées comme des remèdes ont une efficacité mitigée. La prison, par exemple, qui entretient des mécanismes de mise à l’écart et d’oubli des individus ne peut qu’échouer à normaliser les volontés individuelles car elle cultive en son sein les «volontés déviantes», comme pour faire perdurer les illégalismes nécessaires à la conservation des relations de pouvoir au sein de la société. Mais de quelle façon la norme peut -elle agir sur la volonté individuelle ? Il semble que la pensée de Michel Foucault mettant en lumière les échecs de l’action du pouvoir normatif sur la volonté individuelle ait trouvé en cela certaines réponses juridiques actuelles, par exemple dans les récentes mises en place de procédures du plaider-coupable, par des velléités, finalement abandonnées, de fixation d’un âge de consentement sexuel ou encore par la multiplication des alternatives à la prison<br>In Discipline and Punish, Michel Foucault highlights the fact that the sentences handed down against convicts, that were formerly exercising directly on their bodies, are now exercised on their souls, and more precisely on their will. To change the individual by the norm by exerting an influence on his own will, which is nevertheless commonly associated with an irreducible character, is the paradoxical challenge of the normative power, at least of the relations or relations of power defined by Foucault. Through a sociological and psychological approach, the individual is apprehended by the judicial authority as if it were largely the result of determinism. It is by changing his environment that one could change his behavior, that one would make his out -of-the-ordinary will a normed will. However, these attempts presented as remedies have a mixed effectiveness. Prison, for example, which maintains mechanisms of exclusion and forgetfulness of individuals can only fail to normalize individual wishes because it cultivates within it the "deviant wills", as if to perpetuate illegalisms necessary to preserve power relations within society. But how can the norm affect individual will? It seems that the thought of Michel Foucault highlighting the failures of the action of the normative power on the individual will has found in this certain current legal answers, for example in the recent establishment of procedures of the plea-guilty, by the setting, eventually forgotten, of an age of sexual consent or by multiplying alternatives to prison

Michel Foucault ist als Marxismus-Kritiker und als Dissident des Strukturalismus nicht verdächtig, der Dialektik großen Raum in seinem Denken einzuräumen; er hat tatsächlich keine entsprechende Lehre entwickelt. Vielmehr werden die von ihm in seinen großen Werken exponierten Geschichtsbilder an den Rändern durch Brüche und Inkompatibilitäten wie im Innern durch systematische Einheit und epochale Ganzheit gekennzeichnet und so auf doppelte Weise gerade nicht dynamisch gedacht; Foucault entwickelt aus dem Widerspruch keine bewegende Kraft; er erweist den Gegensatz nicht als Bewußtseinsdilemma. So mag es erstaunen, wenn man bei Foucault von Anfang an und bis in die 1960er Jahre eine geläufige Verwendung des Begriffs der Dialektik antrifft. Die einschlägigen Stellen sind keine beiläufigen Bemerkungen, sondern stehen in Zusammenhang mit Hauptthesen und Hauptproblemen der Foucaultschen Analyse.

Intituladas "reportagens de ideias", tinham como objetivo acompanhar o nascimento das ideias no cruzamento com os acontecimentos do tempo presente. No âmbito deste projeto, realizou duas viagens ao Irã (em setembro e novembro), onde acompanhou de perto a movimentação popular durante os eventos da Revolução Islâmica. Para compreender as raízes da oposição ao governo do xá Reza Pahlavi em seus diversos locais de manifestação, Foucault não se restringiu a conversar com os líderes revolucionários, mas entrevistou diferentes categorias de manifestantes, desde os trabalhadores organizados até os profissionais liberais e intelectualizados, passando pelos diversos níveis de organizações religiosas espalhadas pelo país, dos mulás líderes tribais aos aiatolás das grandes cidades de Qom e Teerã. O que lhe interessava era assistir ao nascimento de uma nova forma de pensar entre os iranianos, e isto só seria possível se ele estivesse lá, em meio ao fervilhar revolucionário. O conjunto de textos, que compreende também artigos, manifestos e entrevistas publicados na imprensa francesa, foi objeto de enorme polêmica, principalmente devido aos desdobramentos posteriores à revolução, com a instauração de uma ditadura teocrática de caráter persecutório às minorias e aos direitos humanos, e permaneceram até hoje pouco explorados teoricamente. Esta dissertação pretende analisar as reportagens iranianas de Foucault a partir de sua construção textual, dos conceitos introduzidos e das diversas interpretações que as cercam. Estrutura-se, assim, em três eixos: o primeiro tem o objetivo de recuperar a trama conceitual interna às reportagens; o segundo, analisar as críticas recebidas e seu contexto teórico; o terceiro, apresentar a espiritualidade política como principal inovação introduzida no corpus teórico foucaultiano. Pretende-se destacar, ainda, ressonâncias dos textos iranianos em outras questões elaboradas por Foucault<br>Abstract: In 1978 Michel Foucault wrote a series of news articles for the Italian newspaper "Corriere della Sera". Called "journalism of ideas", the articles had the purpose of following the birth of ideas upon its crossing with present times¿ events. Within the scope of this project, he made two trips to Iran (in September and November), where he followed up close the popular movement during the events of the Islamic Revolution. In order to grasp the roots of the opposition to the Shah Reza Pahlavi government in its several places of manifestation, Foucault did not restrain himself to talking to revolutionary leaders but rather also interviewed different categories of protestors, from organized workers to independent and intellectualized professionals, going through the several level of religious organizations spread out through the country, from mullah tribal leaders to Ayatollahs of the large cities of Qom and Tehran. Foucault was interested in witnessing the birth of a new form of thinking among Iranians and it would only be possible if he would be there present, amidst the revolutionary effervescence. The set of texts, which comprises also articles, manifestos and interviews published by the French press was object of great polemic, mainly due to the unfolding of events following the revolution, with the instauration of a theocratic dictatorship having a persecutory nature against minorities and human rights, and remaining until nowadays not much theoretically explored. This dissertation has the purpose of analyzing the Iranian reportages by Foucault from its textual construction, of concepts introduced and several interpretations surrounding them. Therefore, this paper is structured in three axis, the first having the purpose of retrieving the internal conceptual scheme of the reportages; the second being the analysis of criticism received and its theoretical context; the third being to present the political spirituality as the main innovation introduced to Foucault¿s theoretical framework. Mas ao contrário dos estudos sobre ele, que discutem o corpo sobretudo em Vigiar e Punir e na História da Sexualidade, delimitaremos como objeto o corpo na obra O Nascimento da Clínica, livro que faz uma história do surgimento do corpo-organismo com a emergência da medicina moderna, mais precisamente com a anatomia e fisiologia de Bichat. As dissecações feitas por este médico, no final do século XVIII, possibilitaram às ciências da vida o afastamento do legado de Descartes, que concebe o corpo como uma máquina. Ao traçar esta descontinuidade que culminou com o advento do corpo com órgãos, Foucault provoca uma cisão na história da relação da filosofia com o corpo, que era sempre pensado em referência ao corpo-alma de filosofia cartesiana.
