Abstract (sommario):
The objective of this study was to examine existing knowledge on forest products development and to promote sustainable forest management in Ethiopia. Furthermore, the paper aimed to assess the development and status of Ethiopia's forest products industry in terms of resource base, manufacturing and marketing. It was found that the current annual fuelwood consumption is about 133M m3, with 90% of cooking energy obtained from woody biomass. Wood consumption for primary and secondary forest products manufacturing is expected to increase from the current 112M m3 to 158M m3 by 2033. This review reveals that the development and innovation of a sustainable forest products industry in Ethiopia should balance the production and ecological functions of forest resources. To meet Ethiopia's primary and secondary forest products needs, it is recommended that a clear policy framework be advanced and promoted, including wood technology, forest science and education, silviculture, and post-plantation management practices.

Abstract (sommario):
In Lithuania forests occupy about 2 million hectares, it consists 31.3% of total land area. 32.2% of forests are privately owned. Annual removal is 6.5 million m³. The main production of the Lithuanian woodworking industry is sawn wood, furniture. Lithuanian forests are not only the source of wood products but also non- wood forest products such as berries, mushrooms, game etc. Forests are owned by 222.2 thousands private forest owners and 42 state forest enterprises. Forest industry consists 873 companies; most of there are SME’s. The main factors effecting the competitiveness of forest-wood /non-wood/servicesconsumer chain from the point of view of entrepreneurship in Lithuania: rich wood and non-wood products resources; low level of round wood prices;, favourable geographical location; low cost of labour; the possibilities to get financial support from EU funds. Barriers to entrepreneurship: low level of domestic market development for wood and non-wood products (especially for small-sized round wood); the small-scale private forestry; high transaction cost for entrepreneurship; low capital resources (GDP per capita is low; biggest part of consumption expenditures fall to food and housing); low level of investments and innovations; very weak integration of forest sector to rural development programmes; low knowledge of business establishment and management; weak connections between research and business. The main problems and research questions for enterprise development in the forest sector: domestic market development strategies; urban consumers demand for forest products and services, integration of forestry into rural development; clasterisation of wood working industry; social structure of small-scale private forest owners; conflicts resolutions of multipurpose forest utilisation.

Abstract (sommario):
During the Great Patriotic War, the forest industry of the Urals played an important role in the economy of the region and the Soviet Union. Based on the statistical data put into circulation by researcher A.A. Antoufiev, an analysis of the dynamics of the cost of production fixed assets and gross products in the forest industry of the Urals, including per worker, was undertaken. Due to the enemy’s seizure of part of the western territories of the country, thanks to the availability of forests available for operation, enterprises built and reconstructed in the years of the first five-year plans, equipment evacuation, and the fulfillment of defense orders, the share of this sector of the Urals in the production and value of the country’s forest industry increased. However, in the cost of gross products of the region, the share of the forest industry decreased due to the active development of engineering, metallurgy, and arms production. In the forest industry structure, the higher values of production funds and products per worker were in the pulp and paper and plywood industries, the lowest in the field of forest resources. Conclusions were made about an increase in the cost of funds in the Ural forest industry, a slight decrease in the cost of gross products, a lag in the actual labor productivity of workers from the indicators of industry in the region and the Soviet Union.

Abstract (sommario):
The forest sector plays an important role in the circular bioeconomy due to its focus on renewable materials that can substitute fossil or greenhouse gas emissions-intensive materials, store carbon in bio-based products and provide ecosystem services. This study investigates the state of the bioeconomy in Brazil and its forest industry. Specifically, this study presents some examples of novel wood-based products being developed or manufactured in Brazil and discusses possible opportunities for the development of the country’s forest sector. The pulp and paper industry plays an important role in the forest sector. It has also been showing advancements in the development of cascading uses of wood invalue-added products, such as nanocrystalline cellulose, wood-based textile fibers, lignin-based products, and chemical derivatives from tall oil. Product and business diversification through the integration of the pulp and paper industry to biorefineries could provide new opportunities. Moreover, biochemicals derived from non-wood forest products, such as resin and tannins could promote diversification and competitiveness of the Brazilian forest industry. Although some engineered wood products are still a novelty in Brazil, the market for such products will likely expand in the future following the global trends in wood construction.

Abstract (sommario):
The forest products industry in North America is increasingly losing its share in its domestic markets. The pressure of low cost manufacturing combined with a slowing economy has painfully caused many mills to close and many workers to lose their jobs in recent years. We ask ourselves whether the forest products industry will be able to survive these gloomy times and what, if any are the factors that would drive the future of the forest products industry. Opening our minds to global markets beyond domestic consumption, targeting products towards changing demographic structure and resulting change in consumer tastes, developing and marketing products with the environmental conscious consumer in mind, product innovations, efficient management of the supply chain, and trade practices and policies will be some of the marketing drivers in the forest products industry in the new era.

Abstract (sommario):
Forests are a natural resource of major economic significance to Canada, contributing $13.5 billion (2006) to the Canadian economy. However, the forest products industry is essentially an export industry and must compete locally and globally. The development of new and emerging products including biofuel and biomaterial derived from woody biomass will further drive up wood costs. As such, new products and process innovation are required to reduce production costs and gain market share. In this editorial, we summarize the role of sensors and how the use of sensors could provide means for cost reduction and new product development.

Abstract (sommario):
The project for community forest of Namibia has a mandate to ensure that rural communities manage and utilize forest resources sustainably in order to promote socio‑economic development. Despite the absence of true forests from Namibia, which makes it difficult for timber industry to grow, there is still an abundance of non‑timber forest products in Namibian forests. This research aimed at assessing the monetary value of non‑timber forest products in Uukolonkadhi Community Forest. The research covered the period of five production years. The value of nine selected non‑timber forest products was given in monetary terms. The results reveal that there is a potential to generate monetary income from community forests products. However, due to erratic climatic conditions, there are fluctuations in the income generation, most especially from the products that are directly dependent on the rainfall. Harvesting permits for poles was observed to be the main source of income. Some of the major observed challenges facing the project of community forest were the high level of illiteracy among the management staff. Therefore, it is of vital importance that more qualified foresters and forestry technicians are hired and allocated to all community forests. Furthermore, adequate funds are needed from the government and donors to support incentives and forest activities in community forests.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract The US forest products industry has lost several hundred thousand jobs over recent years. It is argued that low-cost, foreign competition is largely responsible for this loss. Given this situation, enhancing innovation is increasingly seen as a path to competitive advantage and improved financial performance. Strategies have been and are being developed at the state and national level in the United States as well as the national level in many other countries. Although there is general recognition that innovation can positively impact competitiveness in the industry, there is little research verifying this relationship. This article discusses current innovation research focusing on the forest products industry. It also provides a brief example of a competitor nation's (Finland) efforts to enhance innovation in its forest products industry. With this background, the potential roles in enhancing innovation in the US forest products industry of company executives, policymakers, and researchers/educators are outlined. For example, it is recommended that companies concentrate on creating more innovation-centric cultures and policymakers are encouraged to support the future forest products industry workforce. Finally, it is suggested that the research and education community can be more effective in supporting industry through industry-focused research and developing skills of current and future employees.

Abstract (sommario):
In Quebec, where the resource based industry has prevailed for many decades, a good portion of history is based on forestry and agriculture. Farmers and woodlot owners have been involved with primary products marketing structures for more than 25 years. Forest policy development for non industrial private forests has evolved in different ways in neighbouring provinces but intrinsic problems related to forest management, forest harvesting and products marketing are quite similar for all woodlot owners. The area under small private ownership in Québec covers only 9 per cent of the productive forest land. These woodlots nonetheless supply each year about 18 per cent of the timber needed by the wood using industry. The revenue of wood sales, the financial value of forest management, the upkeep of 10,000 jobs and the purchase of goods and services contribute 400 million dollars to the provincial economy. The annual harvest on private woodlots yields a final processed value of more than 1.5 billion dollars of forest products.Private woodlots are located along major waterways, in the southern part of the province, where growing conditions are the most suitable to forest crops. The woodlot sector benefits from the availability of a qualified and motivated labour force, from a well-developed road network and other infrastructures. Forest cover is 60 per cent hardwoods and 40 per cent softwoods. Only 24 per cent of the growing stock is spruce, fir, and jack pine, species which have traditionally been in strong demand for the pulp and paper industry. (FPBQ, 1989).There are inherent disadvantages to private forestry in Quebec such as the great dispersion of the individual woodlots and the small area of each woodlot (107 hectares for active pulpwood producers; 60 hectares per owner). The development of these forests must also overcome other disadvantages including the great number of owners (120,000) and the fact that many of these owners sometimes lack information and incentive.

Abstract (sommario):
Understanding the evolution of the intra-industry trade of forest products between China and its main partner countries is a prerequisite for improving the flow of trade. The intra-industry trade status and the main influencing factors of Chinese forest products trade were measured and identified via use of bilateral forest product trade data between China and its 24 partners from 2000 to 2014, and use of static, marginal, and structural intra-industry trade indices. The results show that, firstly, intra-industry trade of the major Chinese forest products is exhibiting a low-level growth trend and has considerable growth potential. The top five countries with relatively high intra-industry trade levels are Italy, Germany, the United States, Vietnam, and Japan, and the bottom five are New Zealand, Chile, Brazil, Russia, and Spain. Secondly, the intra-industry trade among China and 13 countries, represented by South Korea, is low quality and vertical-type trade; the intra-industry trade among China and seven countries, represented by Thailand, is high quality and a vertical type of trade. Finally, the empirical analysis shows that trade openness and geographical distance are the key factors of intra-industry trade of forest products. The per capita gross domestic product gap, urbanization, foreign direct investment, forest area, and import and export value of forest products also have certain impacts on intra-industry trade.

Abstract An industry-wide survey of the forest products industry was conducted to measure the development of environmental management systems (EMS) designed to implement sustainable forest management on industrial forestlands. The results indicated that larger capacity, publicly owned operations (i.e., paper or engineered forest products firms) that participated in a forest certification standard exhibited well-developed EMSs. Smaller capacity, privately owned operations, such as sawmills, had poorly or undeveloped EMSs. The study provides a valuable baseline by which to measure future EMS development in the forest products industry.

Abstract (sommario):
China’s forest products manufacturing industry is experiencing the dual pressure of forest protection policies and wood scarcity and, therefore, it is of great significance to reveal the spatial agglomeration characteristics and evolution drivers of this industry to enhance its sustainable development. Based on the perspective of large-scale agglomeration in a continuous space, in this study, we used the spatial Gini coefficient and standard deviation ellipse method to investigate the spatial agglomeration degree and location distribution characteristics of China’s forest products manufacturing industry, and we used exploratory spatial data analysis to investigate its spatial agglomeration pattern. The results show that: (1) From 1988 to 2018, the degree of spatial agglomeration of China’s forest products manufacturing industry was relatively low, and the industry was characterized by a very pronounced imbalance in its spatial distribution. (2) The industry has a very clear core–periphery structure, the spatial distribution exhibits a “northeast-southwest” pattern, and the barycenter of the industrial distribution has tended to move south. (3) The industry mainly has a high–high and low–low spatial agglomeration pattern. The provinces with high–high agglomeration are few and concentrated in the southeast coastal area. (4) The spatial agglomeration and evolution characteristics of China’s forest products manufacturing industry may be simultaneously affected by forest protection policies, sources of raw materials, international trade and the degree of marketization. In the future, China’s forest products manufacturing industry should further increase the level of spatial agglomeration to fully realize the economies of scale.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract The special forest products industry has recently become an important factor in forest management. Plants common to the understories of many Pacific Northwest United States and coastal British Columbia forests are harvested, processed, and marketed worldwide in floral greens markets as supplements and complements in floral arrangements. The industry employed over 10,000 people in Washington, Oregon, and southern British Columbia in 1989, and generated an estimated $128.5 million in sales. Forestland managers are discovering the advantages associated with leasing harvesting rights to the producers and harvesters of these products. A mail survey was used to sample special forest products businesses in Washington, Oregon, and British Columbia during 1989. Descriptions of plant materials harvested and their value are presented and discussed. Business characteristics and total industry affects are discussed. The industry's impacts on the regional economies and the industries marketing strategies including channels of distribution, product development, market product development, and future market opportunities are also discussed. Abstract (sommario):
Abstract The balance among forest industry development, forest operators' well-being, and environmental conservation has been noted as an emerging concern in forest sustainability strategy. In this study, we innovatively adopted a multidimensional assessment method that integrates economic, environmental, and social dimensions to compare the comprehensive sustainability of roundwood, bamboo, tea products, and fruit industries, which are representative subtypes of the timber industry and the nontimber forest products (NTFP) industry. Additionally, our study examined whether a relationship exists between the forest industry's comprehensive sustainability and operators' proactiveness. We collected data on selected types of forest operators involved in productive loans from 115 villages in southern China between 2008 and 2020. Empirical results indicate that an increase in the comprehensive sustainability rank of the subtype forest industry led to growth in forest operators' financing amount. Specifically, the NTFP industry motivated operators' proactiveness more than did the timber industry, the effect of which was considerably greater in company group than in household group. Our findings reveal the necessity of policy interventions in developing countries to encourage the transition to optimizing forest industrial structure and sustainable forestry operations, which could initiate the socio-economic goal of sustained forest resource use and growth in forest sector output through the natural promotion effect posed by the sustainability advantages.

Abstract (sommario):
Currently, in accordance with the processes of globalization and global economic and environmental trends, the Russian government is focusing economic entities on the innovative development of the Russian economy. For the timber industry of the Russian Federation, which ranks first in the world in terms of timber reserves, a transition to innovative development is inevitable. This transition is due to the resource potential of the industry, global environmental trends of the "green economy", the prevailing market relations between the economic entities of the industry, the presence of a bank of scientific and technical and experimental development in the field of timber industry. The analysis of Russia's share in the global forestry market is carried out: the Russian Federation is the world leader in timber reserves, it has 1/5 of the world's forest reserves and, therefore, takes first place; Brazil ranks second in timber reserves, Canada is third and the United States is fourth. The structure of Russia's exports by product groups is examined: the country's most profitable budget item is the export of fuel and energy products, accounting for 64% of the total export structure, and only 3% of the export structure is the export of timber and paper products. Given the development trends of world oil markets and the geopolitical tensions of countries, it can be assumed that in the next 5 years, the total revenue of the Russian Federation from the export of fuel and energy products will significantly decrease and will cease to be the most profitable budget item in the country. Due to the fact that the Russian Federation is a world leader in timber reserves, we believe that the innovative development of the timber industry should be one of the leading areas in the industry development strategy of the Russian Federation, and accordingly in the export strategy of the Russian Federation. The main directions of the innovative development of the timber industry of the Russian Federation in the following sectors are identified: forestry, woodworking industry, pulp and paper industry, chemical production, logging, wooden housing construction.

Abstract (sommario):
The forest products industry is an important socioeconomic sector to many developing countries, both in terms of foreign exchange earnings and employment. In the case of Malaysia, the industry has been one of the fastest growing manufacturing sectors in the country, driven primarily by comparative advantages derived from factor inputs. However, with increasing competition from other cheaper producing nations particularly China and Vietnam, the Malaysian forest products industry is forced to transform and move along the value-chain through innovation and value-addition. Although the government has played a pivotal role in providing a broad policy framework to support value-adding and innovative activities, success on the ground has been limited. The creativity environment, which is plagued with by low-wage economy, coupled with limited network between research, market and industrial enterprises have stifled innovation within the industry. The lack of information and the poor quality human capital has also contributed to the limited innovation within the forest products industry in the country. Against this background, most innovation within the industry is confined to the realms of alternative raw materials, with minimal technological and design variations. Although extensive research and development activities are undertaken, the commercialization potential of the research outputs is limited due to being not market-driven. Inevitably, innovation in the forest products sector must be based on market-needs and must be driven through technological and design change in order to ensure long-term competitiveness.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract Special tariffs have been increasingly adopted to protect domestic industries from potential injury caused by unfair international trade. In this study, a multinomial logit model is employed to examine the patterns and determinants of antidumping duty investigations in the global forest products industry. From 1995 to 2015, a total of 372 relevant cases are identified. The number of firms and the inclusion of unions as a petitioner generally improve the probability of an affirmative decision. The characteristics of petition countries have shown more impacts on the decisions than those of target countries. Developing countries have initiated a larger number of antidumping duty investigations in the global forest products industry, and furthermore, they are more inclined to adopt antidumping duties than developed countries. Countries with abundant forest resources and more forest products trade are more likely to make an affirmative decision. These findings will provide helpful information to industrial firms and government agencies in dealing with the challenges of global competition. Study Implications The findings reveal that getting more stakeholders involved in an antidumping duty investigation will increase the probability of trade intervention. The economic status in petition countries is the primary determinant of the decisions from antidumping duty investigations in the global forest products industry. Developing countries not only have initiated a large number of antidumping duty investigations in the forest products industry but also have been more inclined to adopt antidumping duties. Antidumping duty investigations offer an opportunity to countries with abundant forest resources and extensive forest products trade in case of unfair international competition.

Abstract (sommario):
The goal of this article is to conduct a detailed study of China’s forestry industry chain and determine the effect it has on the national economy. Based on the 2018 China Input–Output Table (153 departments) and other relevant data released by the National Bureau of Statistics, as well as the input–output method established by Wassily Leontief, this article conducts a comprehensive and detailed analysis of China’s forest industry chain and its impact on the national economy. The results show that the backward industrial chain of China’s forestry industry involves 105 industrial departments. China’s forestry sector purchases the most products from the tertiary industry, accounting for 56.05% of all forestry purchases. The products of the tertiary industry have a significant impact on forestry. The forward industry chain of China’s forestry involves 131 industrial sectors, with China’s forestry selling the most products to the secondary industry, accounting for 93.47% of all forestry sales. The forestry sensitivity coefficient is 0.767 and the influence coefficient is 0.65. The secondary industry has a significant impact on the sales of forestry products. The impact of the forward industry chain is greater than that of the backward industry chain and the impact of forestry on the national economy is quite large. Suggestions about how to expand the planting area and production scale of domestic economic forests were put forward. An increase in the added value of exported forestry products, improved service quality of the tertiary industry to forestry, and improved quality and quantity of products provided by forestry to the secondary industry are necessary.

Abstract (sommario):
Sustainability has become a key element of environmental management programs at most forest products companies. However, describing sustainability in terms of natural resource use and management can be challenging, owing to the evolution of practices deemed to be consistent with the concept. This paper provides quantitative and qualitative assessments and discussion of water resources as they relate to the activities of the forest products industry. Water resource use and management from the forest, through manufacturing, and on to potential effects of treated effluents on receiving waters is considered. Important findings from this work are that forests act to process precipitation into high-quality surface waters, and in North America, most surface waters are derived from forested areas. Forest management can affect water quality, but the use of forestry best management practices greatly minimizes harmful effects. Manufacturing of pulp and paper is water-use intensive relative to most other industries, although the amount of water consumed (i.e., evaporated or exported with product or residuals) represents a small fraction of the overall water used. The potential for treated effluent to affect receiving water systems has been widely investigated, and while effects are sometimes observed, aquatic community structures most commonly are not altered by well-treated mill effluents. Water profile results and water sustainability metrics are also briefly compared.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract Growing world demand for processed goods made from wood and a large supply of native timber in tropical regions combined with development incentives from national governments have driven rapid growth in the forest products industry in many developing countries. Contract farming schemes have emerged as an important mechanism to ensure an adequate supply of raw timber for processing. These contracts also encourage secondary forest establishment, which is argued to reduce harvesting pressure on ecologically valuable native forests. We explore whether there exists a potential for efficiency gains within the forest products industry given the current installed capacity in the state of Andhra Pradesh, India. We estimate a stochastic production frontier function for this industry based on Annual Survey of Industries data from 2010 to 2013. We present evidence that there is space for efficiency gains and that the marginal value product of wood as a raw input is high enough to justify the engagement of companies and farmers in wood supply agreements as a means to reduce pressure on native forests.

Abstract (sommario):
The forest complex, as a subject of study, possesses unique characteristics and distinct features that are related to its multi-layered structure. This structure connects primary industries and secondary industries that are dependent on the forest resource base. One key characteristic of both the national and global forest products markets is the significant fluctuation in prices for various types of forest products, both on a global and domestic scale. The ban on imports of forest products to European countries from 2022 has led to negative trends in price fluctuations for forest products in the domestic market. Prices for many types of forest products decreased by 1.5 – 2 times during the period of 2022-2023. The Russian Federation faces challenges in the sustainable and efficient development of the forest industry due to the unpredictable fluctuations in global and domestic prices for forest products. Therefore, in such conditions, the study of pricing and the development of an optimal mechanism for pricing timber products becomes an important aspect of management.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract Recent interest in producing energy from woody biomass has raised questions about the coexistence of wood-to-energy markets and the traditional forest products industry in Virginia. This study examined recent trends in the forest products industry and the wood-to-energy market, as well as the potential for competition between the two industries. Results indicate that the forest products industry has struggled recently, whereas wood-to-energy markets have expanded. Current opinion varies as to whether or not the wood-to-energy market will negatively affect the forest products industry. At present, 75% of Virginia's pulpmills are located within 50 miles of a wood-to-energy facility, and all pulpmills are within 75 miles. Recent trends in pulpwood prices, fuel chip prices, and Virginia law indicate that competition for raw material is unlikely in the short term. However, this research indicates that in the longer term, depending on government policies and technological progress in conversion technologies, competition between forest industry and wood-to-energy companies is possible.

Abstract (sommario):
Traditionally an industry based on plentiful natural resources, the forest sector in British Columbia must be transformed to include a far higher amount of technology if its prosperity is to be sustained. Only by embodying a larger technological component in its products and processes can the forest sector offset the economic decline usually associated with the transition from old-growth to secondary, managed forests. Research will also increase the contribution the forests themselves can make to our economic and environmental well-being. Because of its position as a large producer of forest products, effective research strategies for British Columbia (and probably for Canada more broadly) will differ substantially from those pursued by major consuming nations such as the United States or Japan.

Abstract (sommario):
This paper has two aims: clarification of several aspects of the debate on the appropriateness of various indicators of natural resource scarcity and the empirical analysis of the trends in the scarcity of forest products in the U.S. Two distinct types of indicators are developed in the natural resource scarcity literature, which we term exchange scarcity and productive scarcity. In the neoclassical paradigm, the former is measured by price and rental rates, and the latter by unit cost. In the biophysical literature, productive scarcity is measured by quality-weighted measures of unit energy cost. We test econometrically for trends in lumber prices in the long-run period 1800–1990, for trends in stumpage prices between 1910 and 1989, and for trends in productive scarcity indicators in the shorter 1947–1990 period. The empirical evidence indicates that the growth in the price of forest products as compared with other manufactured goods, and in the rental rate of timberland, levelled off during the post-war period in the U.S. Nevertheless, these commodities are today much more scarce than in the historic past. From the end of the 1950s, absolute and relative productive scarcity declined as measured by all indicators. The levelling off of the price of forest products after 150 years of increase is consistent with economic theory that predicts that prices reach a plateau when extraction from old-growth forests is replaced by forest plantations and replanting in general.

Abstract (sommario):
Imposing temporary trade barriers (TTBs) as remedy actions against imports has become popular among global countries in recent decades. Many countries have employed these trade barriers to protect domestic firms from possible injury by unfair international trade. This study evaluated the main factors that influenced the implementation of TTBs in the forest products industry from 1995 to 2015 for two scenarios: a global and developing countries scenario; and a paper and non-paper products scenario. A two-step sample selection model was employed to assess the determinants of the decision to impose TTBs and the frequency to implement TTBs for the scenario of global and developing countries. From the perspective of forest products, determinants of applying TTBs on paper and non-paper products were examined with the probit regression. For the scenario of global and developing countries, the import, employment in agriculture, forest coverage rate, inflation, and GDP per capita were significant determinants. For the scenario of paper and non-paper products, variables of the forest area, imports, exports, GDP per capita, tariff rate, expenditure on education, and employment in agriculture were significant. The results show that a country with a large per capita GDP is more likely to file more TTBs against others. One implication is that countries should be cautious to impose TTBs, as it may cause the attention to shift from the inefficiencies of domestic forest firms to the unfair trade actions of exporters.

Abstract (sommario):
Sustaining high levels of productivity and productivity growth in the Canadian forest sector depends on rapid development and adoption of sophisticated technology for our forests, manufacturing facilities and products. Yet R&D expenditures in Canada lag those for most of its major competitors, suggesting that Canada is unlikely to produce the necessary technology on the schedule it is needed. This lack of investment in R&D stems at least in part from three factors: (i) the specific problems associated with being a net exporter with a large share of many global markets, (ii) the small size of Canadian firms when compared with our global competitors, and (iii) Canada's collective failure to articulate a widely-accepted forest sector strategy which guides the daily policy and management decisions of governments, industry and interest groups. This paper argues that an effective R&D strategy for the country involves rapid deployment of technological innovations, R&D targeted on the special features of Canada's forests and polity, and better links between strategies for the forest industry and the forest resource. Abstract (sommario):
Abstract It is well known that worldwide deforestation has a negative impact on the global environment. Forests play an important role in producing oxygen as well as retaining gases that create the greenhouse effect. Forests primarily absorb carbon dioxide, the major air pollutant released by the industrial activities. Energy production is the major source of environmental contamination. In addition to reducing CO2 emissions, another issue this industrial sector must tackle is to decrease the use of fossil fuels by substituting them with renewable, environmentally friendly energy sources. One of the answers to these challenges is the utilization of biomass as energy sources. However, biomass-based fuels include short bolts, split round-wood, pulpwood, bark and by-products of sawmilling, which are the raw materials for the wood-based panel industry as well.Wood utilization of the forest products industry has a major impact on the delayed release of carbon dioxide stored in the wood. All over the world, just as in Hungary, the wood-based panel industry mainly uses low quality wood resources and turns them into value added products. The elongation of the life cycle of low quality wood materials decreases CO2 emissions, thus significantly contributing to environmental protection. Furthermore, it is assumed that raw material demand of the wood-based panel industry could be satisfied by focusing on sustainable forest management and well-planned reforestation. Additionally, special energy-plantations may provide extra wood resources, while waste and other non-usable parts of trees contribute to the effective and economic operation of biomass utilizing power-plants. This paper summarizes the current situation of the Hungarian wood-based panel industry and discusses the effects of the panel manufacturing processes on the environment. Also, it outlines the possible future of this important segment of the forest products industry.

Abstract (sommario):
The article reveals the woodworking industry as a component of the wood processing complex and a perspective export-oriented sector of the Ukrainian economy. The purpose of the research is to identify the main trends and results of the development of the woodworking industry in the Ukraine regions in the pre-war period, to identify problems and to substantiate possible ways of solving them in the post-war period. The role and importance of the woodworking industry in the formation of the country's GDP was studied. The prerequisites for the formation and formation of the woodworking industry in Ukraine are characterized, namely, the level of forest cover in the country is analyzed, which directly affects the provision of raw materials for enterprises in the industry. Regional differences in natural conditions are determined, which is the reason for significant interregional differentiation of the development of the woodworking sector. The amount of produced forest products in the regions of Ukraine in the pre-war period was analyzed. It has been proven that the lack of raw materials remains a problem for the woodworking industry. It has been established that the forestry of Ukraine is characterized by a relatively low level of forest cover in the country, significant regional differentiation of forests, and a high proportion of ecologically significant forests; individual forests are provided for permanent use by enterprises; a significant area of forests grows in the zone of radioactive contamination; half of Ukraine's forests are artificially created and require increased care. It has been found that there is a dynamic and constantly growing demand for woodworking products. This attracts capital to the industry, increasing competition, which was quite high in the market for wood and wood products in Ukraine before the war. The woodworking industry market of Ukraine meets the conditions of effective competition, where small enterprises prevail. It was established that about 40% of the products of the woodworking industry are sold abroad. The most promising areas of industry are the manufacture of wood products, its processing and furniture production. Sawmill and planing production are the most export-oriented. At the same time, it was found that Ukraine will continue to be an exporter of mainly raw materials and products with a low share of added value. This reduces the efficiency of export activities and additionally creates pressure on the development of enterprises with a complex production cycle, increasing the shortage of wood raw materials. The article describes the current state and problems of the development of the woodworking industry during the war. The main directions of restoration of the woodworking sector of Ukraine in the post-war period are outlined.

Abstract (sommario):
The purpose of this research was to determine drivers and barriers of Appalachian wood product competitors in Central America. Potential market opportunities for Appalachian forest product companies in Central America were evaluated and strategies were developed to increase exports of Appalachian wood products to Central America. The findings support the claim that United States forest product companies have not put enough effort into marketing forest products to Central America. Forests in El Salvador, Panama, and Costa Rica are limiting harvests and the industry lacks support from the government, reducing the amount of raw material and production. Inconsistencies between Appalachian and Central American wood products industries (e.g., dimensions) act as a barrier to the efficient exchange of wood products. The best market strategies for Appalachian forest products companies to increase sales into Central America are: partner with local wholesalers, offer higher value-added products, and maintain similar pricing with competition. An outside source of wood is needed to meet the needs of growing regional infrastructure.

With a current yearly output of $241 million per year nontimber forest products (NTFP) contribute significantly to the welfare of rural and First Nations communities in Canada. Maple sap products, wild mushrooms and wild fruits are the most important NTFP for consumption both in Canada and abroad. However, because of increased access to international markets by entrepreneurs along with a growing international demand for NTFP it may be possible to double or triple Canada's harvest of NTFP. Further development of this industry should be associated with adequate training of harvesters in terms of NTFP biology in order to maximize profits while achieving biological sustainability. As well, research should emphasize the domestication of specific NTFP to meet growing demand, increase revenues and promote biodiversity conservation. Abstract (sommario):
The article summarizes the data on the competitive advantages of innovative forest products in Russia and abroad. It is noted that the Russian market is not completely ready for innovative products that have been intensively developed recently. To ensure universal promotion of new products, it is necessary to use a system of product standardization, improve staff skills, and increase consumer literacy. The problem is that many innovative products are developed abroad and enter the Russian market as a result of foreign investment in the Russian timber industry. The production of composite structural wood materials is due to the fact that in some regions of the world there is a large proportion of low-quality wood raw materials, which cannot be used in industry in the form of balances, technological raw materials and firewood. Innovative technologies make it possible to obtain construction and structural materials from low-quality wood raw materials, in which there are no shortcomings of solid wood. New structural wood materials fill specific market niches, leading to deeper market differentiation. The price factor largely determines the demand for innovative products in the domestic market, otherwise, excess volumes of products are exported to foreign markets.

Abstract (sommario):
Cross-sector collaboration has gained attention from researchers in different fields of science in recent years because it represents significant business potential for forest companies to work with sectors possessing a more positive demand outlook, including those facing increasing pressure to detach from oil derivatives. Despite this, there is a lack of research regarding company-level, cross-sector collaboration in the forest-sector literature. This paper seeks to enhance the understanding of the cross-sector collaboration concept in the forest-sector literature and explore alternatives for forest companies to collaborate with other industries, rather than to compete. A systematic literature review is conducted to explore the relevance of cross-sector collaboration in the forest industry. Furthermore, the main drivers, benefits, and challenges of collaboration in the forest industry are identified. Results show that the literature has emphasized the importance of cross-sector collaboration for forest companies, but little empirical work has been done regarding the link between forest companies and other industrial sectors. Cost reduction, competitiveness, and environmental sustainability are among the principal drivers and benefits. Forest business culture, lack of trust, and lack of parameters to evaluate costs and savings generated are key challenges to forest companies implementing cross-sector collaboration.
