Objective: To assess quantity and quality of nutrition and food safety information in science textbooks prescribed by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), India for grades I through X. Design: Content analysis. Methods: A coding scheme was developed for quantitative and qualitative analyses. Two investigators independently coded the data and inter-coder reliability was assessed using Cohen’s Kappa. The inferences were then reviewed by an expert group. Results: There was high agreement (Kappa = 0.89) between coders. Nutrition topics got > 10% pages in textbooks of grades I to VII, while they were omitted in subsequent grades. Food safety got a mere 1% of page allocation only in grades I to III books. Over 25% of biology illustrations related to nutrition in grades I, II and IV but not in others. Nutrition topics in textbooks beyond grade IV were repetitive and inconsistent. Some illustrations depicted uncommon foods and had urban bias. Conclusions: Nutrition and food safety content in science textbooks is low. Important topics such as nutritional needs during adolescence, obesity, unhealthy foods and food labelling are not covered. These findings provide direction for strengthening textbook content to promote nutrition education in schools.

Objectives The purpose of this study is to compare the food cultures of Korea and Vietnam and to explore ways to supplement the content of food culture education in the textbooks ‘Korean Language and Culture’ Beginner 1⋅ 2 and Intermediate 1⋅2, which are used in the Korea Immigration and Integration Program. Methods This study compared the food cultures of Korea and Vietnam through a literature review and analyzed the content of food culture education in the ‘Korean Language and Culture’ textbooks Beginner 1⋅2 and Intermediate 1⋅2. Based on this analysis, it identified areas of deficiency in the textbooks and proposed educational strategies to enhance learning effectiveness. Results The comparison of food cultures between Korea and Vietnam revealed significant differences in food styles, cooking methods, and dining customs between the two countries. Additionally, it was identified that there are areas in the food culture education content of the ‘Korean Language and Culture’ textbooks that require improvement. Conclusions In this study, strategies and methods for educating Vietnamese female marriage immigrants on food culture through the ‘Korean Language and Culture’ textbook were proposed. By expanding and enhancing the content of the textbook, not only can the effectiveness of learning be increased, but also adaptability can be enhanced by introducing practical experience programs where learners can directly experience and learn about Korean dining culture. In the future, more systematic development of educational materials and expansion of practical experience programs will be necessary, and conducting comparative studies on various cultures through online education platforms will further enhance the effectiveness of food culture education.

In recent decades, cultural content analysis of EFL textbooks has received a wide attention in ELT pedagogy. This research aims at analyzing the cultural themes, especially “little c” and culture categories presented in an English textbook used by Junior High School students in Indonesia. This study was carried out using Xiao’s suggested themes for detecting “little c” that represent food, holiday, lifestyles, customs, values, hobbies, and gesture/body language. Besides, it also investigated the culture categories proposed by Cortazzi and Jin, namely source culture, target culture, and international culture. The result showed that the presentation of the source, target, and international culture are in an imbalance proportion. The textbook’s content mostly exposes target culture and source culture. Meanwhile, international culture was not exposed. Moreover, value and food dominated the cultural theme in the textbook. Meanwhile, lifestyle and customs are less exposed. Furthermore, three themes of “little c” (holiday, hobbies, and gestures) were not exposed at all. Due to the imbalance proportion of cultural content, the textbook developers should provide a more balanced proportion of cultural contents in terms of themes and categories to help learners gain more knowledge related to intercultural understanding.

Textbooks are the main source of teaching-learning materials used in primary and secondary schools. This study was carried out in Bhutan to examine if the existing textbooks in primary and secondary schools contain sufficient knowledge and skills in entrepreneurship education. This descriptive study collected 96 textbooks used by students and teachers in classes Pre-Primary (PP) to XII. The reviewers identified descriptions about entrepreneurship if any in the content and the pedagogical aspects. The content included the meaning of entrepreneurship, characteristics, student activity and images on entrepreneurship. The study revealed that entrepreneurship education is not thoroughly integrated into primary and secondary school textbooks. Three (3.1%) out of 96 textbooks contained descriptions about entrepreneurship. The study, therefore, recommends existing textbook contents and images on entrepreneurship education to be improved and experiential learning opportunities be included. Ministry of Education and the Royal Education Council needs to review and revise classes PP-XII existing school textbooks at various levels. Integrate entrepreneurship education-related topics in the existing textbooks of primary and secondary schools based on the current labour market needs. However, Media Information Literacy, Environmental Science, and Agriculture for Food Security textbooks were not analyzed since many schools did not offer these elective subjects due to no or poor ability rating for higher education admission in Bhutan.

With the aim of seeking relevant educational measures, this study analyzed contents on sustainable development found in the food and nutrition units of practical arts textbooks. For this purpose, nine goals and 25 detailed targets associated with the food and nutrition units were drawn from the Korean-Sustainable Development Goals (K-SDGs), then set as analysis criteria. Accordingly, the education contents were analyzed by both the academic year and food and nutrition unit. The results were as follows. First, in all textbooks, the fifth-grade unit “Balanced Dietary Life” was highly related to “3. Ensuring a healthy and happy life” in “People” and “12. Sustainable Production and Consumption” in “prosperity.” However, only some textbooks offered contents related to water pollution in “Environment” and how air pollution could be reduced by using local agricultural products when choosing and cooking snacks. Second, in all textbooks, the fifth-grade unit “Characteristics of Food Ingredients and Taste of Food” was highly related to “3. Ensuring a healthy and happy life” in “People,” “11. Development of Sustainable Cities and Residential Areas” in “People,” and “7. Eco-friendly Production and Consumption of Energy” in “Environment.” However, insufficient contents discussed how seasonal foods and local agricultural products were helpful for preserving the land ecosystem by reducing environmental pollution during production and transportation. Third, in all textbooks, the sixth-grade unit “Selection and Cooking of Safe Foods” was highly related to “3. Ensuring a healthy and happy life” in “People,” “11. Development of Sustainable Cities and Residential Areas” in “People,” and “12. Sustainable Production and Consumption” in “prosperity.” However, only some textbooks offered contents on jobs and advanced technologies related to dietary life in “Prosperity” and water pollution/land ecosystem preservation in “Environment.”

This study investigated the degree to which maker competencies can be cultivated by learning the dietary life units of fifth and sixth practical arts textbooks, including areas for improvement in cultivating maker competencies in dietary education. The study analyzed six maker competency groups (integrated thinking, collaboration, making mind, human-centered, problem discovery, and making practice) and their sub-competencies as they appear in these units. The analysis yielded the following results. First, in the dietary life units of the practical arts textbook based on the 2015 revised practical arts curriculum, both the integrated thinking competency group and the making practice competency were found in 100% and 54.8% of the 5th-grade textbooks and 54.2% and 61.9% of the 6th-grade textbooks, respectively. The making mind competency group was present in 50% of 5th-grade textbooks and 37.5% of 6th-grade textbooks, while the collaboration competency group appeared in 33.3% of 5th-grade textbooks and 50.0% of 6th-grade textbooks. The problem discovery competency group featured in 50% of the 5th-grade textbooks but was entirely absent in the 6th-grade textbooks. Furthermore, the human-centered competency group was not reflected in either the 5th or 6th grade textbooks. Second, the integrated thinking competency group featured prominently in the achievement criteria units focused on theoretical learning, such as [6Practiacl Arts 02-01], [6Practiacl Arts 02-04], and [6Practiacl Arts 02-09]. Furthermore, the making practice and making mind competency groups were predominantly reflected in the achievement criteria units involving food making, such as [6Practiacl Arts 02-02] and [6Practiacl Arts 02-10]. In addition, the sharing and communication capabilities of the collaboration competency group were also reflected across most units. In conclusion, the study found that by learning the dietary life units of the practical arts textbook according to the 2015 revised practical arts curriculum, students successfully cultivated five of the six maker competency groups, excluding the human-centered competency group.

Despite the abundance of the literature addressing culture incorporation in English language teaching and learning, the study of the implicit, as well as the explicit, cultural representations in EFL textbooks’ linguistic content formulates an essential part with a consensus on its significant importance. Since 2012, a new EFL textbooks series written by foreign authors has been adopted in Iraq; this series does not seem to have gained a lot of quality research about the hidden curriculum, particularly related to its cultural content. This study investigates culture integration in the content of “English for Iraq” textbook series currently used in the intermediate schools in Iraq, aiming at detecting both any potential acculturation, and the kind of culture, (surface or deep) emphasized in the written texts and the visuals of the textbooks’ content. A qualitative research method is employed based on a descriptive content analysis. Findings show that the textbooks encompass sharp difference in the frequency occurrences of the cultural representations, resulting to the dominance of both the source (Iraqi local cultural) culture, and the two cultural dimensions, products and persons. This imbalanced representation drives the textbooks to be source-culture-based textbooks with least probability of acculturation, and be prevailed with surface culture materials focusing on items like Folks, Fairs, Festivals, and Food, which turn the textbooks to look like tourist’s guide books. The textbooks then follow a traditional approach for integrating culture in their content. "Where there are Chinese people, there is Chinese education". The Malaysian Chinese ancestors practised Chinese education in Malaysia since their arrival and with their efforts, Malaysia has the most comprehensive and systematic Chinese education in Southeast Asia. It is also considered the country that has preserved Chinese culture the best (Qian, 2017). Since 2011, the Chinese language has been offered as an elective subject in the standards-based curriculum for primary school (KSSR) syllabus. Since introducing Chinese into classrooms, there have been two versions of Chinese textbooks for the national primary schools: (KSSR) National Primary School Chinese Textbook from grade 1 until grade 6. Its subsequent revision in 2017 KSSR (Semakan 2017) National Primary School Chinese Textbook has been applied up to grade 5. By studying these two versions of the textbooks, this paper will discuss how Chinese culture is depicted in Malaysian national primary school Chinese textbooks. It will also analyse the elements of Chinese culture and subsequently investigate whether cultural content is necessary to be reinforced in national primary school Chinese textbooks for its text to be enriched. The research objective is determined using integrated studies done within and beyond Malaysia and includes relevant materials, research reports, literature, and dissertation papers. Through literature review, this paper summarises, categories, and analyses content about traditional Chinese cultural elements that can be found in both versions of the Chinese textbooks in national primary school. The traditional Chinese cultures found in both versions of textbooks are listed under seven elements which are: Traditional Chinese Festivities, Traditional Chinese Folk Games, Traditional Chinese Family Appellations, Traditional Chinese Food Culture, Traditional Chinese Arts, Traditional Chinese Customs, Chinese Literature. The collected content is then categorised, arranged, and analysed. A deduction can then be made to provide conclusive recommendations. It can be deduced that the textbooks are pretty packed with relevant and related Chinese cultural elements, but primarily, it is apparent that the Chinese culture is mainly influenced by local cultural elements, which are very close to our daily life. National primary school Chinese language education plays a role in cultural dissemination. It enables pupils of different ethnic backgrounds to learn Chinese and gain a deeper understanding of Chinese culture. As well as can help prevent misunderstandings caused by cultural differences.

The national history textbook is one of the most controversial textbooks. In books, historical events are presented in the form of narratives that can be used as lessons for the present and future challenges. Narratives can be studied from the point of view of critical discourse analysis that provides awareness. A literature study method with a close reading technique is used to understand the narrative pattern in the textbook. The textbooks in this analysis are textbooks published between 1975-2003. These books represent textbooks from the 1975 curriculum to the 1994 curriculum, supplement to GBPP 1999. The results of the analysis show that this textbook shows a role narrative pattern using a concentric chronological approach, using the principles of accommodative history writing, highlighting aspects of heroism, and using an event approach in the flow of food. The weakness of this textbook is that there are attempts to build an unbalanced role narrative. The narrative of the role of the regime in power at that time was presented with an exaggerated cult tendency.Buku teks sejarah nasional adalah salah satu buku teks yang paling sering mengundang kontroversi. Pada buku teks, setiap kejadian sejarah disajikan sebagai narasi sejarah yang menjadi materi pembelajaran untuk kehidupan masa sekarang dan menghadapi tantangan di masa depan. Sajian narasi dalam analisis buku dapat ditelaah menggunakan pespektif model analisis wacana kritis dengan mengedepankan aspek kesadaran sejarah. Untuk memahami pola narasi dalam buku teks digunakan metode studi literatur dengan teknik close reading. Buku teks dalam analisis ini merupakan buku teks yang diterbitkan antara tahun 1975-2003. Buku-buku tersebut mewakili buku teks dari kurikulum 1975 sampai dengan kurikulum 1994, suplemen GBPP 1999. Hasil analisis menunjukkan bahwa buku teks ini menunjukkan pola narasi peran dengan menggunakan pendekatan kronologis konsentris, menggunakan prinsip penulisan sejarah akomodatif, menonjolkan aspek heroism, dan menggunakan pendekatan peristiwa dalam alur sajiannya. Kelemahan buku teks ini adalah terdapat upaya membangun narasi peran yang tidak seimbang. Narasi peran bagi rezim yang sedang berkuasa pada saat itu ditampilkan dengan tendensi pengkultusan yang berlebihan.

Abstract Introduction: The 2018 Basic Health Research showed a high prevalence of anemia (32%), Chronic Energy Deficiency (36.3%), and overweight and obesity (16.0%) among adolescents. Nutrition education is crucial to be taught to adolescents from an early age. However, there is a lack of research on content related to nutrition education in textbooks of school policies on nutrition and health. This study aimed to evaluate the nutrition education on senior high schools in Mamuju Regency.Methods: This qualitative study examined word by word of high school students textbooks’ content of nutrition and health education. The main study material was textbooks used by high school students in Mamuju Regency. The research informants were students and teachers. The analysis was done through content analysis by examining words and pictures in the textbooks. Data was classified into the same categories to answer the research objectives.Results: Only a small proportion of textbooks (0.17%) contain nutrition and health messages. The nutrition and health messages included the nutritional content of food, food labels, and physical activity such as how to do long jump. Informants did not get information on adolescent health and nutrition at school. In addition, there is currently no school policy regarding breakfast or healthy snacks in the school environment.Conclusion: Balanced nutrition messages had not been published in textbooks and delivered regularly in schools. Policy makers should review the school curriculum to include nutrition and health messages for adolescents in the textbooks used.

Abstract Ferguson’s Accounting for Taste reveals a gap in our understanding: How did French culinary discourse move beyond the bourgeois sphere in which it emerged in the nineteenth century? Picking up on her comparison of the Proustian synthesis of regional and national culinary culture in the Recherche to the project of national identity creation in the Third Republic’s best-selling textbook, Le Tour de la France par deux enfants, this essay argues that the culinary model Ferguson describes was in fact widely disseminated through mass primary education under the Third Republic. Examining an overlooked corpus of primary school readers and textbooks, I show that food and cooking provided object lessons imparting practical and scientific knowledge to enlighten the masses, and textbooks canonized regional specialties as part of a new national geographic consciousness. At the same time, I underscore the limits of this consensual image of a national culinary culture, which collided with the class habits and horizons of the urban and rural masses attending l’école républicaine.

The Albanian Education System is currently undergoing several changes, one of which is the Foreign Languages Curriculum implementation. One of the main External Factors in implementing the EFL curriculum is even the kind of Textbook it is chosen to be used in the EFL teaching and learning process. As long as a book is considered ‘food for thought’, an EFL textbook could be easily considered as ’a milestone’ in the students’ education. According to this, choosing the right textbook to teach English to High School students is as important as designing the curriculum itself. It is needed to think about the students' needs, interests, ability and level. Choosing a course book is not a frivolous matter, so it should be made clear what kind of English textbook fits best for the students of the High Schools in Albania. This will come out according to the analyses of what the curriculum asks for, the currently used textbooks, as well as according to the observations among teachers and students in the High Schools of Elbasan, Albania.

Abstract Beginning with stories of hunger and food magic in Tibetan biographies, I explore a dietary practice of total abstinence from material foods. Buddhist meditators are said to enjoy “the food of meditation” or “the food of the sky.” Texts teach meditators how to use visualization and yogic movement to “extract the essence” of breath and use it as food. When discussing illnesses that may be experienced by retreatants, these texts identify hunger as illness. Examining how dietary teachings for Buddhist contemplatives are also medical textbooks, I propose that these food practices reconstruct the pathology of hunger, turning hunger into a tool for enlightenment. After a quick look at dietary asceticism in Indic and other traditions, I suggest that in these Tibetan examples, dietary abstinence is ultimately about self-perfection.

<p>The article is devoted to the study of the lexis of textbooks of Russian as a foreign language, created by American authors for American students. This lexis is potentially able to participate in creating the image of Russia. Using the methods of continuous sampling, contextual and quantitative analysis, the author of the article examines the vocabulary (lexis) used by the authors of the textbooks to describe the leisure of Russians, their food and meal times to analyze its potential participation in shaping the image of our country in American students. The article shows how at the level of a textbook of Russian as a foreign language a stereotypical image of our country is created in the United States, the image built on stable clich&eacute;d ideas about Russia: after analyzing the vocabulary of 50 Russian language textbooks created in the United States from the beginning of the 20<sup>th</sup> century to the present, the most frequent lexemes were identified, such as &laquo;vodka&raquo;, &laquo;beer&raquo;, &laquo;tea&raquo;, &laquo;shchi&raquo;, &laquo;borscht&raquo;, &laquo;caviar&raquo;, &laquo;samovar&raquo;, &laquo;drink vodka&raquo;.</p>

The purpose of this study is to analyze the place names in Korean textbooks and to examine the role of the place names in the textbooks The subjects of the study are ‘Seoul University Korean’ and ‘Sejong Korean’. The place names were based on the classification of place names in the National Atlas and were classified into natural place names, human place names, and administrative place names. Natural place names and administrative place names appeared evenly in the two textbooks, but humanities place names showed large regional deviations and differences. The place names in the textbooks show not only the geographical location but also the changes of society, symbolize the times, and let us know the history, tourism and food culture of our country. This study can not only provide a way to reflect various place names in textbooks in a balanced way, but can also be used as basic data to reveal changes in place names in Korean language textbooks.

Men account for more than 90 percent of business leaders, policymakers, and economists mentioned in textbooks. In addition, women are a minority of the fictionalized people appearing in textbooks and a minority of celebrities. Fictionalized women are shown taking fewer actions and are more likely to be involved in food, fashion, or household tasks, while men are more likely both to be in leadership positions and in business or policy.

Moreover, they are used when discussing complex scientific, political, and social issues in the entire world. The aim of this paper is to determine if metonymies play an important role in the area of food technology too, i.e. if they are significantly represented in the textbooks intended for teaching German for specific purposes at the Faculty of food technology. By classifying metonymies, light will be shed on the most prevailing types used in three German textbooks. Even though metonymies are commonly used to produce rhetorical effects such as in humour, jargon, literature, persuasion, this paper will determine if they can be found in the scientific field of food technology.

This study aimed to analyze the representation of culture and gender in visual and verbal texts in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) textbooks used by upper secondary school students. A content analysis was conducted on three EFL textbooks for upper secondary school students, using Xiao's (2010) framework to guide the analysis of culture “small-c”representation, and Brugeilles and Cromer's (2009) study to examine gender character according to their roles portrayed in the textbooks. The findings revealed that the highest number of visual illustrations was predominantly presented in the lifestyle aspect, followed by customs, values, holidays, hobbies, and food. It was also observed that gender representation was equally represented in the verbal text, but not proportionally in the visuals. The findings indicate that culture and gender awareness among students could be improved if textbooks provided a more balanced representation of various cultures encompassing source culture, target culture, and international target culture, and paid more attention to the equal treatment of genders.

INTRODUCTION: Being present in high school in chemistry and biology disciplines, biochemistry is to explain the chemical and biological reactions in cells. His concepts are seen as abstract and difficult to understand and can be contextualized through experimentation. Experimentation is used in the classroom to allow students to view the applicability of the contents through observation, creating hypotheses, discussion and conclusions. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to evaluate the presence of experimentation in biochemistry content in high school books. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this way, it was analyzed the presence of experimental activities in the textbooks approved by the National Textbook Plan 2015 "Biology 1", authored by César da Silva Junior, Sezar Sasson and Nelson Caldini Junior, and in the book " Chemistry - Volume 3 "by Martha Reis. RESULTS: At the end of the unit where the biochemical concepts are covered in the book "Biology 1" is presented an interdisciplinary project called "Enzymes - chemical tools of life" that proposes four experiments on catalase, pH and contact surface enzyme-substrate. They are easy activities to be implemented with affordable materials. Already at the Chemistry book, when addressing the biochemistry there is only one proposal for experimental activity called "Glycolic Extract of milk proteins". In this case, we need materials like food processor and enameled pots, which can hinder your performance in virtual classes, however, the experiment is easy to perform. Both books contain questions after the experimental proposals enhancing the questioning of the activities and understanding the contents addressed. CONCLUSIONS: The present experimental activities in the textbooks are mostly easy to apply and is not required sophisticated equipment of Sciences laboratories. It also allows the contextualization of theory and practice enhancing the process of teaching and learning with the proposals made.

Classical cultural studies, or 'Landeskunde', as it has been known since the first textbooks on teaching German as a foreign language, tells its readers a lot about a country, initially in a cognitive manner, and later also through an intercultural and communicative approach. Alongside historical events like the fall of the Berlin wall, aspects of everyday life and culture have come into focus, as is evidenced by the existence of many texts about food in Germany, Austria and Switzerland (commonly known as DACH). These classical approaches to 'Landeskunde' are challenged in this essay by arguing that 'Landeskunde' is often transmitted implicitly, through the protagonists of the textbooks and the stories they tell – therefore, 'Landeskunde' is also people's studies. It is in these stories that a country is told. Are German textbooks still dominated by "young, dynamic, cheerful people of different origins" (Funk 2004: 41, translated by the author) that "principally belong to a prosperous bourgeois middle class" (Altmayer 2017: 17, translated by the author)? What are the stories about German-speaking countries that they tell? How is the discursive approach to 'Landeskunde' being implemented? These questions are discussed in this essay with reference to current German-language textbooks, with a focus on three new books on the A1/A2 levels.

Despite the attempts by South African government to make education accessible to all by introducing free food and free textbooks at the primary school level, there is still high failure rate in mathematics and science in high schools in the country. This study makes attempt to establish some factors that affect the performance of students, especially in science subjects in high schools in the Vhembe district in the Limpopo province. A survey was conducted in 17 high schools randomly sampled in the Vhembe district. Purposive sampling was used to get the grade 11 and 12 students and their teachers. About 700 students, 70 teachers and 17 principals were interviewed. The study concludes that the overall pass rate is 70% but the rate in mathematics and science is hardly 40%; and the key factors affecting performance are lack of laboratory for practical, awards, shuffling and textbooks. The study recommends that science laboratories be built in schools, textbooks be supplied in good time and teachers to motivate students by giving awards.

This study aims to describe the presentation and percentage of health literacy aspects in textbooks Indonesian grade XI high school. This research is qualitative descriptive research using content analysis methods. The data used is health literacy content in textbooks Indonesian grade XI high school. The data collection techniques used in this study were listening and note-taking techniques. Furthermore, the data analysis method used is a matching method using the Determining Element Sorting (PUP) technique with semantic and referential sorting methods. The data validity technique used is triangulation of theory with confidence levels through persistence and observation techniques. The results of the analysis showed that aspects of health literacy presented in textbooks Indonesian grade XI SMA consisted of aspects of food and drink, physical activity, physical violence/injury, sexual behavior, mental health, protective factors, environmental hygiene, hair hygiene, cigarette consumption, and illegal drug consumption. The lowest health literacy presentation is found in e-books Indonesian grade XI SMA (published by the Ministry of Education and Culture); That's 35% (enough). Next, health literacy in the "Pride of My Indonesian Nation" from the Triad is expressed in percentage 30% (sufficient). While the "Indonesian" of Yrama Widya is calculated at 36% (sufficient). The highest presentation of health literacy aspects in textbooks is the protective factor aspect with a percentage of 37% which is included in the sufficient category of the overall data

Researchers have only recently begun looking at food insecurity on college campuses. Food insecurity is characterized by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) as limited or uncertain access to nutritionally adequate and safe foods or the ability to acquire acceptable foods in socially acceptable ways due to limited financial resources. Harmony Reppond illustrates this point when writing, “food insecurity for college students can mean running out of food between paychecks, attending campus events in search of food, reducing food intake, purchasing minimally nutritious food that costs less, skipping meals, and deciding between paying for textbooks or food.” Food insecurity is often an invisible condition because of the stigma associated with hunger and poverty. However, the extent and severity of food insecurity on college campuses is alarming. The U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO) conducted a literature review and found that college student food insecurity rates exceeded 30% in the majority of published studies. The Hope Center at Temple University conducts an annual survey on student basic needs, which originally covered food and housing insecurity, and has since been expanded to include transportation, childcare, stress, and mental health. Over the last five years this survey has been completed by more than 330,000 students attending 411 colleges and universities, and the Hope Center has found that on average over the last five years 39% of respondents reported being food insecure in the prior 30 days. The rise of student food insecurity is linked to a decrease in public funding for higher education, which in turn has caused a steep increase in tuition rates, combined with more low-income students entering college.

In this paper we compare authentic fast-food ordering transactions with EFL textbook dialogs in order to assist teachers and materials writers in the development of students’ communication skills. Using conversation analysis (CA) and drawing on the concepts of communicative competence and interactional competence, we first provide a detailed description of a small sample of real-life transactions and then compare these with the dialogs in textbooks used in Japan, including some successive editions. We demonstrate that the textbook dialogs differ from the recorded real-life interactions in the sequencing of actions and completeness of actions. In the context of the findings, we suggest implications for language teaching and materials development. 本論は、学習者のコミュニケーション能力の育成を目指す教師や教科書執筆者に助力するため、ファストフード店での注文のやりとりについて、オーセンティックな対話とEFL教科書にある対話文とを比較する。会話分析(CA)の手法を用い、コミュニケーション能力やインタラクション能力の概念に基づいて、まず現実のやりとりのデータサンプルを詳細に記述し、その後日本で使われている教科書の対話文と比較する。ここで検証された教科書の対話文が、録音された現実のやりとりとは一連の行為進行や行為の完了の面において異なっているということを論証する。この研究結果に照らして、言語教育や教材開発への提案を行う。

Epidemics are mostly related to the consumption of non-chlorinated water and contaminated chicken food and in the spring-summer season. Since 2005, according to the European Food Safety Agency and the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control, campylobacteriosis has been considered the leading alimentary intoxication. A review of the literature was published in Medline, PubMed, Google Scholar, electronically available scientific journals, books, textbooks, proceedings books and reports EFSA/ ECDC, FAO/ WHO. Only literature in English, Bosnian/Croatian/Serbian is included. As a measure to prevent campylobacteriosis, sanitation is recommended in the primary production of chicken meat, and the use of probiotics in meat as biological preservatives is being investigated

The government’s duty is to guarantee unimpeded access to food. Thus, relevant public policies, individual methods and tools, approaches, and strategic decisions are always the focus of attention of scientists, politicians, and government officials. Recognizing the critical importance of this imperative, this study aims to conduct a bibliometric analysis that sheds light on the scientific landscape of strategic public administration of food security. The paper conducts a bibliometric analysis of scientific publications (using VosViewer – from 1990 to February 2024 using Scopus and WoS scientometric databases); monographs/textbooks (using Google Books and Ngram Viewer – for 1990–2019); and trend analysis (using Google Trends – from 2004 to February 2024). The analysis showed an exponential increase in the number of publications since 2000, with peaks in 2008 (financial crisis), 2019–2020 (COVID-19), and 2023 (threat to food security due to military conflicts). The clustering of scientific papers by content showed that the most significant (red) cluster unites research that links food security to agricultural development, sustainable development, climate change, and water supply. The spatial clustering of scientific publications revealed that scientific leadership belongs to scientists from the United States and China. The largest research funders are Chinese scientific institutions. It also reflected regional differences in research focus. In particular, Italy, Switzerland, and France emphasize agricultural innovation and quality standards, while China and Australia focus on increasing yields and food storage technologies.

Under the current legal regime, the only civil recourse against food traders causing food poisoning to consumers in Malaysia is through civil action under tort of negligence. A civil action is not straightforward and often fraught with difficulties. Hence, the objectives of this paper are twofold. Firstly, to examine the application of the tort of negligence in civil liability cases against food traders who cause food poisoning; and secondly, to explore alternative approaches that could be introduced to safeguard the legal rights to compensation of aggrieved consumers and/or dependants of deceased consumers. This paper employs a pure doctrinal research method where the relevant food safety legislations and relevant English case laws together with the secondary sources such as textbooks, journals articles, statistics reports, press reports, relevant online databases, and websites are referred to. This paper concludes that the only civil recourse available is by commencing a civil action under tort of negligence against food traders. In addition, it is also found that relevant food safety legislations only empower enforcement authorities to take legal action against food traders but they will not act on behalf of aggrieved consumers who suffered from food poisoning and/or dependants of deceased consumers who died from food poisoning. This paper, thus, proposes reforms by way of amendments to the Food Act 1983.

This study aims to derive implications for Korean culture education in Thailand by grasping the contents of Korean culture education in Thailand and investigating learners' perception of Korean culture. To this end, Korean textbooks for Thai secondary schools and mock tests for university entrance exams were analyzed. As a result, cultural content was organized according to the level of beginner learners, and there were many topics related to middle and high school life in Korea. In the mock test, various cultural items were presented compared to textbooks. The area of food and geography was highly recognized, but the area of history was low. In this regard, learners were also aware of the importance and necessity of learning Korean culture. For cultural education of Korean learners in Thailand, it is necessary to strengthen the expertise of Korean teachers.

Background. Fracture repair is a complex process. An inappropriate diet is a contributing risk factor for fracture nonunion. The aim of this study was to extract dietary recommendations for fracture healing according to traditional Persian medicine (TPM) literature. Method. The contents relevant to diets in fracture healing were selected from main textbooks in TPM like Al Qanon fi Al-teb ( The Canon). Other reference textbooks in traditional medicine were also used for a comprehensive study in this respect. Finally content analysis was used for summarizing and describing the results. Findings. Food stuffs are classified in TPM according to their nutritive value, their assimilability, and the quality of achieved chyme. Some light meals like chicken soup are recommended for the early days of fracture and high-nutrient and dense foods such as goat’s or sheep’s head and nuts are advised in following days for fracture healing acceleration and callus formation. Several recommendations are also provided for pacing the healing process. Conclusion. A comparison of Avicenna and other Persian sage’s recommended regimens with the recent evidence revealed the potential positive effects of their regimen for bone healing acceleration. It can shed light on a part of history of orthopedics and add to current knowledge about bone fracture and its management.

Until recently, hepatitis E virus (HEV) was thought not to occur in developed countries. It is now clear that locally acquired HEV is common in such settings. HEV infection acquired in these areas differs from that in developing countries in a number of important aspects: it is caused by genotype 3 (and 4 in China and Japan), it mainly affects middle-aged/elderly males and it is zoonotic with a porcine primary host. Pig herds worldwide are infected with HEV genotype 3 and HEV has been found in the human food chain in a number of developed countries. However, the route of transmission is not fully understood, since most cases are not obviously associated with pigs/pig products. HEV can be transmitted by blood transfusion and surprisingly high numbers of asymptomatic blood donors are viremic at the time of donation: Germany 1:1,200, Netherlands 1:2,671, England 1:2,848. Our understanding of the clinical phenotype of HEV infection in humans has undergone a sea-change in recent years. Previously, HEV was thought to cause only acute self-limiting hepatitis. However, HEV may cause persistent disease in the immunocompromised. Patients with chronic HEV infection have no symptoms, but some develop rapidly progressive liver cirrhosis. The full clinical spectrum of HEV is still emerging. HEV has important extra-hepatic manifestations, which deserve further investigation. For example, HEV can cause a wide range of neurological illness. In particular, very recent data suggest that Guillain-Barré syndrome and neuralgic amyotrophy are associated with locally acquired HEV in approximately 5 and 10% of the cases, respectively.

Background and objective This study was conducted to find out the status of plant utilization in the current textbooks by analyzing the plants by grade and subject in the national textbooks for all elementary school grades in the 2015 revised curriculum in Korea. Methods The data collected was analyzed using Microsoft Office Excel to obtain the frequency and ratio of collected plant data and SPSS for Windows 26.0 to determine learning content areas by grade and the R program was used to visualize the learning content areas. Results A total of 232 species of plants were presented 1,047 times in the national textbooks. Based on an analysis of the plants presented by grade, the species that continued to increase in the lower grades tended to decrease in the fifth and sixth grades, the upper grades of elementary school. As for the number and frequency of plant species by subject, Korean Language had the highest number and frequency of plant species. The types of presentation of plants in textbooks were mainly text, followed by illustrations and photos of plants, which were largely used in first grade textbooks. In addition, as for the area of learning contents in which plants are used, in the lower grades, plants were used in the linguistic domain, and in the upper grades, in the botanical and environmental domains of the natural sciences. Herbaceous plants were presented more than woody plants, and according to an analysis of the plants based on the classification of crops, horticultural crops were presented the most, followed by food crops. Out of horticultural crops, flowering plants were found the most diversity with 63 species, but the plants that appeared most frequently were fruit trees that are commonly encountered in real life. Conclusion As a result of this study, various plant species were included in elementary school textbooks, but most of them were horticultural crops encountered in real life depending on their use. Nevertheless, plant species with high frequency have continued a similar trend of frequency from the previous curriculums. Therefore, in the next curriculum, plant learning materials should be reflected according to social changes and students’ preference for plants.

Abstract The aim of the present paper is to focus on the language of Human Resources (HR) as one of the subfields of English for business purposes in respect of positive evaluation and stancetaking and to identify to what extent evaluative language common in real-life situations is reflected in currently available textbooks of English for HR (EHR). Authentic language is taken from blogs and interviews with prominent HR managers on www.thehrdirector.com, which is a global online magazine dedicated to HR professionals. The corpus created from these texts is analysed from the point of view of evaluative language and the data ascertained are put into contrast with the language presented in three commonly available HR English textbooks. The analysis focusses on the lexical level of language and is based on the Appraisal framework (and the system of Attitude) of Systemic Functional Linguistics. Even though the present study is intended as qualitative rather than quantitative, the findings are quantified in order to shed some light on the commonality and frequency of some of the phenomena ascertained and their reflection in the textbooks. The outcomes of the analysis might serve as food for thought and inspiration for tertiary-level teachers of general business English courses as well as highly specialised courses focusing on the language of human resources.

Infantile colic is common, but no safe and effective conventional treatment exists. The use of acupuncture has increased despite weak evidence. This practitioner survey explores and discusses how infantile colic is regarded and treated in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). The study is based on personal communication with 24 acupuncturists from nine countries. These acupuncturists specialize in pediatric acupuncture and represent different styles of acupuncture. Their experiences are discussed and related to relevant books and articles. Informants claimed good results when treating infants with colic. The TCM patterns commonly described by informants matched the textbooks to a great extent. The most common syndromes were “stagnation of food” and “Spleen Qi Xu.” Regarding treatment, some informants followed the teachers’ and the textbook authors’ advice on differentiated treatment according to syndrome. The points used most often were LI4, ST36, and Sifeng. Other informants treated all infants alike in one single point, LI4. The results demonstrate the diversity of TCM. The use of acupuncture for infantile colic presents an interesting option, but further research is needed in order to optimize the effects and protect infants from unnecessary or less effective treatment.

The use of new technological tools in the classroom enables many new ways of teaching in foreign languages. Unlike the old methods that rely on unidirectionality, new technologies also require new ways of teaching, managing work, and therefore a new ethos. The introduction of new technologies also leads to a change in the status of the teacher, which also requires a change in the training strategy. This article reflects a pedagogical experiment aimed at testing the readiness of both the teacher and the students to acquire new knowledge and skills in a modern, interactive way. For this purpose, during the whole course of foreign language training over two semesters at the Medical College at the Medical University - Plovdiv, two groups of students in the specialties "Medical Cosmetics" and “Instructor in Food Safety” are taught in two different ways - one studying English in the traditional way with a textbook, while the other using only "interactive" methods without using textbooks or similar tools. At exit, a survey is conducted among one of the groups of students to evaluate their attitude towards the new approaches in learning a foreign language.
