Abstract (sommario):
Improvement of energy harvesting performance from flexible thin film-based energy harvesters is essential to accomplish future self-powered electronics and sensor systems. In particular, the integration of harvesting signals should be established as a single device configuration without complicated device connections or expensive methodologies. In this research, we study the dual-film structures of the flexible PZT film energy harvester experimentally and theoretically to propose an effective principle for integrating energy harvesting signals. Laser lift-off (LLO) processes are used for fabrication because this is known as the most efficient technology for flexible high-performance energy harvesters. We develop two different device structures using the multistep LLO: a stacked structure and a double-faced (bimorph) structure. Although both structures are well demonstrated without serious material degradation, the stacked structure is not efficient for energy harvesting due to the ineffectively applied strain to the piezoelectric film in bending. This phenomenon stems from differences in position of mechanical neutral planes, which is investigated by finite element analysis and calculation. Finally, effectively integrated performance is achieved by a bimorph dual-film-structured flexible energy harvester. Our study will foster the development of various structures in flexible energy harvesters towards self-powered sensor applications with high efficiency.

Abstract (sommario):
Surge capacity is the ability to manage the increased influx of critically ill or injured patients during a sudden onset crisis. During such an event, all ordinary resources are activated and used in a systematic, structured, and planned way to cope with the situation. There are, however, occasions where conventional healthcare means are insufficient, and additional resources must be summoned. In such an event, the activation of existing capabilities within community resources can increase regional surge capacity in a flexible manner. These additional resources together represent the concept of Flexible Surge Capacity. This study aims to investigate the possibility of establishing a Flexible Surge Capacity response system to emergencies by examining the main components of surge capacity (Staff, Stuff, Structure, System) within facilities of interest present in the Western Region of Sweden. Through a mixed-method and use of (A) questionnaires and (B) semi-structured key-informant interviews, data was collected from potential alternative care facilities to determine capacities and capabilities and barriers and limitations as well as interest to be included in a flexible surge capacity response system. Both interest and ability were found in the investigated primary healthcare centers, veterinary and dental clinics, schools, and sports and hotel facilities to participate in such a system, either by receiving resources and/or drills and exercises. Barriers limiting the potential participation in this response system consisted of a varying lack of space, beds, healthcare materials, and competencies along with a need for clear organizational structure and medical responsibility. These results indicate that the concept of flexible surge capacity is a feasible approach to emergency management. Educational initiatives, drills and exercises, layperson empowerment, organizational and legal changes and sufficient funding are needed to realize the concept.

Abstract (sommario):
Flexible formworks are dominantly used for concrete constructions. These constructions become rigid after curing and their form cannot be changed, also their color or translucency is stable during usage period; i.e. these constructions are not flexible. On the other hand, in order to satisfy new architectural requirements the necessity of flexibility and smartness is undeniable for the construction. The questions of this paper are: How smartness can be added to rigid structures? What are the roles of nano-flexible formworks to turn non-flexible structures into flexible ones? To answer the research questions, descriptive - analytical research method has been adopted and empirical data gathered to feed inference mechanism. Our investigation shows that if the flexible formwork has been made by smart materials which are changeable in nano-scale, and the formwork is left on the structure even after curing, it would act as a nano-flexible skin for the structure and would satisfy some architectural requirements in nano-scale.

Abstract (sommario):
Flexible structures have been widely used in many fields due to the advantages of light quality, small damping, and strong flexibility. However, flexible structures exhibit the vibration in the process of manipulation, which reduces the pointing precision of the system and causes fatigue of the machine. So, this paper focuses on the identification method for active vibration control of flexible structure. The modal parameters and transfer function of the system are identified from the step response signal based on Prony algorithm, while the vibration is attenuated by using the input shaping technique designed according to the parameters identified from the Prony algorithm. Eventually, the proposed approach is applied to the most common flexible structure, a piezoelectric cantilever beam actuated by Macro Fiber Composite (MFC). The experimental results demonstrate that the Prony algorithm is very effective and accurate on the dynamic modeling of flexible structure and input shaper could significantly reduce the vibration and improve the response speed of system.

Abstract (sommario):
This paper presents an automated procedure useful in the study of large constrained flexible structures, undergoing large specified motions. The structure is looked upon as a “partially open tree” system, containing closed loops in some of the branches. The governing equations are developed using Kane’s equations as formulated by Huston et al. The accommodation of the constraint equations is based on the use of orthogonal complement arrays. The flexibility and oscillations of the bodies is modelled using finite segment modelling, structure analysis, and scaling techniques. The procedures developed are expected to be useful in applications including robotics, space structures, and biosystems.

Abstract (sommario):
Traditional modal testing has difficulty accurately identifying the ultralow-frequency modes of flexible structures. Ultralow-frequency excitation and vibration signal acquisition are two main obstacles. Aiming at ultralow-frequency modal identification of flexible structures, a modal testing method based on Digital Image Correlation method and Eigensystem Realization Algorithm is proposed. Considering impulse and shaker excitation are difficult to make generate ultralow-frequency vibration of structures, the initial displacement is applied to the structure for excitation. The ultralow-frequency accelerometer always has a large mass, which will change the dynamics performance of the flexible structure, so a structural vibration response was obtained through the Digital Image Correlation method. After collecting the free-decay vibration signal, the ultralow-frequency mode of the structure was identified by using the Eigensystem Realization Algorithm. Ground modal tests were conducted to verify the proposed method. Firstly, a solar wing structure was adopted, from which it was concluded that the signal acquisition using Digital Image Correlation method had high feasibility and accuracy. Secondly, an ultralow-frequency flexible cantilever beam structure which had the theoretical solution was employed to verify the proposed method and the theoretical fundamental frequency of the structure was 0.185 Hz. Results show that the Digital Image Correlation method can effectively measure the response signal of the ultralow-frequency flexible structure, and obtain the dynamics characteristics.

ABSTRACTFlexible filamentous viruses make up a large fraction of the known plant viruses, but in comparison with those of other viruses, very little is known about their structures. We have used fiber diffraction, cryo-electron microscopy, and scanning transmission electron microscopy to determine the symmetry of a potyvirus, soybean mosaic virus; to confirm the symmetry of a potexvirus, potato virus X; and to determine the low-resolution structures of both viruses. We conclude that these viruses and, by implication, most or all flexible filamentous plant viruses share a common coat protein fold and helical symmetry, with slightly less than 9 subunits per helical turn.

Abstract (sommario):
A dynamic model for peripheral milling of very flexible plate type structures has been presented. The structural dynamics of a cantilevered plate structure is modelled at the tool-workpiece contact zone. The interaction of the very flexible plate structure and rigid end mill during dynamic milling is modelled. The variation in surface, chip thickness, and structural dynamics of the plate are considered in determining the milling forces. The proposed model provides surface finish form errors displacements at the tool-workpiece contact zone, and cutting forces for dynamic end milling operations.

Abstract (sommario):
A new type of flexible web with a spatial symmetry structure is proposed to address the interception and acquisition of UAVs. It is different from the existing flexible web structure. According to the mechanical characteristics of the flexible web, the dynamic analysis model of the flexible web is established through theoretical deduction. Through finite element simulation calculation, the flexible webs of three different spatial symmetric structures are compared and analyzed. The internal force and air attitude of the three flexible webs are discussed. Among them, the new flexible web has a lag time of 0.162 s and a flight height of 11.624 m. The above simulation parameters are better than those of the other two symmetrical structures. It was proved that the new spatial symmetric flexible web has good traction and deployment performance. In addition, a ground verification test is designed and carried out. The web attitude and flight altitude parameters are compared with the simulation and test results. It is found that the simulation and experimental process of the new symmetric structure web are in good agreement, the synchronization of attitude change is good, and the flight altitude error of the two is controlled at about 5%. The feasibility and effectiveness of this method are proven and it can provide a reference for the research of flexible interception and acquisition of UAVs.

Abstract (sommario):
A variety of identification strategies have a common cell structure, in which the observed heterogeneity of the regression defines a partition of the sample into cells. Typically in the presence of exogenous covariates that define the cell structure, identification assumptions are imposed conditional on each value of the covariate, or cell by cell. Treatment effects across cells are typically heterogeneous. Researchers might be interested in unconditional parameters which are the averaged treatment effects across the cells. Alternatively, treatment effects can be estimated more efficiently if researchers are willing to impose additional parametric and semiparametric structures on the heterogeneous treatment effects across cells.

Abstract (sommario):
Flexible structural components can be attached to the rest of the structure using different types of joints. For instance, this is the case of solar panels or array antennas for space applications that are joined to the body of the satellite. To predict the dynamic behaviour of such structures under different boundary conditions, such as additional constraints or appended structures, it is possible to start from the frequency response functions in free-free conditions. In this situation, any structure exhibits rigid body modes at zero frequency. To experimentally simulate free-free boundary conditions, flexible supports such as soft springs are typically used: with such arrangement, rigid body modes occur at low non-zero frequencies. Since a flexible structure exhibits the first flexible modes at very low frequencies, rigid body modes and flexible modes become coupled: therefore, experimental frequency response function measurements provide incorrect information about the low frequency dynamics of the free-free structure. To overcome this problem, substructure decoupling can be used, that allows us to identify the dynamics of a substructure (i.e. the free-free structure) after measuring the frequency response functions on the complete structure (i.e. the structure plus the supports) and from a dynamic model of the residual substructure (i.e. the supporting structure). Subsequently, the effect of additional boundary conditions can be predicted using a frequency response function condensation technique. The procedure is tested on a reduced scale model of a space solar panel.

Self-supporting bamboo structures are ultralight architectural modules applying bamboo round poles, tensile pantographic grids and textile membranes. The structural system applies articulated flexible joints in polyester ropes and locking bio-composite bandage rings, keeping bamboo bars free of torsion stresses. An experimental 1:3 scale prototype and a full-scale structure were fabricated to make previsions about the physical and mechanical behavior of the structure. The experimental results were verified applying a numerical model for the structure. In turn, the flexible joints were analyzed theoretically. The computer model was analyzed using the finite element SAP2000 program. The numerical results were in close agreement with the experimental results specifically for the structural behavior of the flexible joints.

Abstract (sommario):
With the development of flexible electronics, flexible microheaters have been applied in many areas. Low power consumption and fast response microheaters have attracted much attention. In this work, systematic thermal and mechanical analyses were conducted for a kind of flexible microheater with two different wire structures. The microheater consisted of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) substrate and copper electric wire with graphene thin film as the middle layer. The steady-state average temperature and heating efficiency for the two structures were compared and it was shown that the S-shaped wire structure was better for voltage-controlled microheater other than circular-shaped structure. In addition, the maximum thermal stress for both structures was from the boundary of microheaters, which indicated that not only the wire structure but also the shape of micro heaters should be considered to reduce the damage caused by thermal stress. The influence resulting from the thickness of graphene thin film also has been discussed. In all, the heating efficiency for flexible microheaters can be up to 135 °C/W. With the proposed PID voltage control system, the response time for the designed microheater was less than 10 s. Moreover, a feasible fabrication process flow for these proposed structures combing thermal analysis results in this work can provide some clues for flexible microheaters design and fabrication in other application areas.

It has high stability and high sensitivity, and is especially suitable for the production of sensors. In this study, a flexible graphene sensor based on a spider web bionic structure is reported. Graphene, with its excellent mechanical properties and high electrical conductivity, is an ideal material for making sensors. In this paper, laser-induced graphene (LIG) is used as a sensing material to make a spider web structure, which is encapsulated onto a polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) substrate to make a spider web structured graphene flexible strain sensor. The study found that the stress generated by the sensor of the spider web structure in the process of stretching and torsion can be evenly distributed in the spider web structure, which has excellent resonance ability, and the overall structure shows good structural robustness. In the experimental test, it is shown that the flexible stress sensor with spider web structure achieves high sensitivity (GF is 36.8), wide working range (0–35%), low hysteresis (260 ms), high repeatability and stability, and has long-term durability. In addition, the manufacturing process of the whole sensor is simple and convenient, and the manufactured sensor is economical and durable. It shows excellent stability in finger flexion and extension, fist clenching, and arm flexion and extension applications. This shows that the sensor can be widely used in wearable sensing devices and the detection of human biological signals. Finally, it has certain development potential in the practical application of medical health, motion detection, human-computer interaction and other fields.

Abstract (sommario):
This paper presents a computational fluid-structure dynamics coupling method of flexible wing. The computational fluid dynamics is solving RANS equations. The stiffness used in computational structure dynamics is tested by experiments. Then the aerodynamic performance of flexible wing is researched and compared with rigid wing. The results show that the lift and thrust generated by flexible wing are less than the rigid wing. Flexible wing can slower the variety of aerodynamic performance when the flight environment is changing. And flexible wing has bigger stalling angle.

Abstract (sommario):
This paper analyses the e ects of air-structure interaction of systems subjectedto weak blast loads. While these coupling e ects are negligible for typical steel or concretestructures, they may dominate the dynamic response of lighter and more exible (compliant)systems like membranes, blast curtains or cable facades. For these light and exible systems,a classical decoupled analysis, i.e., neglecting the inuence of the surrounding air, might sig-ni cantly overestimate the deections and strains. However, we show that the coupling e ectscan be accounted for by basically adding a viscous aerodynamic damping force. We discussand compare two approaches how to obtain the aerodynamic damping term. With decreasingstructural sti ness and mass, the damping contribution of air increases signi cantly. The resultsof Hydrocode simulations are presented, and an outlook into further areas of research is given.

Abstract (sommario):
With the recent increase in the design of light and flexible structures, numerical investigations of fluid and structure together play a significant role in most engineering applications. Therefore, the current study presents an examination of fluid-structure interaction involving flexible structures. The problem is numerically solved by a commercial software ANSYS-Workbench. Two-way coupled three-dimensional transient simulations are carried out for the flexible flaps of different thicknesses in glycerin for a laminar flow and Reynolds number ranging from 3 < Re < 12. The bending line of the flaps is compared with experimental data for different alignments of the flaps relative to the fluid flow. The study reports the computation of the maximum tip-deflection and deformation of flaps fixed at the bottom and mounted normal to the flow. Additionally, drag coefficients for flexible flaps are computed and flow regimes in the wake of the flaps are presented. As well, the study gives an understanding on how the fluid response changes as the structure deforms and the model is appropriate to predict the behavior of thick and comparatively thinner flaps. The results are sufficiently encouraging to consider the present model for analyzing turbulent flow processes against flexible objects.

Abstract (sommario):
Space solar power satellite (SSPS) as a very large flexible spacecraft structure with complex configuration, large size and number of units bring the difficulties to dynamics modeling and analysis. Considering SSPS structure characteristics, equivalent strain and kinetic energy theory is adopted to establish the equivalent beam model of SSPS truss structure. The assumed mode method is adopted to describe the flexible body. The modal truncation method implements the dynamics system order reduction. Mixed coordinates method is adopted to establish the rigid-flexible coupled dynamic model. The established dynamic model can reflect dynamic characteristics of SSPS, achieve control requirements for SSPS and decrease the workload of simulation calculation. The independent modal space control (IMSC) method is proposed to active control research view of the large displacement, nonlinearity, low and dense mode frequency, light damping of flexible structures. Simulation results on flexible solar array show the effectiveness of the control method.

Abstract (sommario):
Feedback control of flexible structures naturally involves actuators and sensors that often cannot be placed at the same point in the structure. It has been widely recognized that this noncollocation can lead to difficult control problems and, in particular, difficulty in achieving high robustness to variation in the dynamic properties of the structure. This problem has previously been traced to transmission zeros in the dynamic transfer function between sensor location and actuator location, especially those lying on the positive real axis in the complex plane. In this artie/e, the physical significance of these zeros is explored and the dynamic properties of beams that give rise to real positive zeros are contrasted to those of torsional and compressive systems that do not.

Abstract (sommario):
In recent years, modeling and control of flexible space robots are extensively researched. Compared with traditional rigid robots, flexible robots have low energy consumption, wide operating space, high carrying capacity and other characteristics. However, due to its special structure, the robot arm will get deformation and vibration in motion, which brings a lot of problems to the positioning and tracking control of flexible space robots. Therefore, directing at the dynamics modeling and control issues of the free-floating flexible dual-arm space robots, this article carries out in-depth study. This paper first studies the elastic deformation and vibration of the flexible space manipulator and the robust control problem of the system trajectory tracking for free-floating flexible dual-arm space robots.

Abstract (sommario):
A time varying extension of the passive vibration absorber is described, which increases the effectiveness of a small number of passive vibration absorbers on large or changing flexible structures. Initially, the extended absorber is targeted on a subset of the modes of the flexible structure. A stable switching scheme is described, which allows the absorber to target different subsets of modes, or to adapt to changes in the flexible structure. Computer simulation and experimental work are given which demonstrate the effectiveness of the extended absorber.

Abstract (sommario):
Laboratory dynamic testing of large and complex space structures can be difficult and expensive, if practical at all. The use of dynamically scaled test articles is a standard approach to laboratory testing which helps to avoid these problems. The theory and practice of dynamic scaling for elastic structures are well established and validated; however, the issue of scaling structures with viscoelastic components has not been thoroughly investigated. In a structure that is “replica scaled” by a factor 1/λ, the natural frequencies are each scaled by a factor λ. For proper dynamic scaling, each corresponding damping ratio should be unchanged from that of the original full scale structure. The difficulty that arises with structures incorporating viscoelastic components is that the viscoelastic material properties vary with frequency in a nonlinear fashion. Thus, for a particular mode of a scaled model, the viscoelastic material’s damping properties are evaluated at a frequency which is modified by a factor 1/λ and as a consequence the damping ratio does not scale properly. To solve this problem, the authors propose taking advantage of the temperature dependence of viscoelastic material properties. By appropriately controlling the experimental temperature of the scaled structure, it is possible to obtain accurate dynamic scaling results. In this paper, the proposed frequency-temperature compensation method of dynamic scaling for viscoelastically damped structures is developed and experimentally validated.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract: In this paper a scaled down model of a wing of rectangular planform is designed and the static analysis on the wing is carried out to determine the aerodynamics forces, stresses acting on it and the frequency of various modes. The iteration for the analysis is carried out for three materials namely, Aluminium 7075 T-6, Glass Fibre Reinforced Polymer and Aluminium Metal Matrix Composite. The analysis in the coupled mode is conducted and compared with the results obtained from that of static analysis to observe the changes in the flow pattern and how the structure behaves when the wing is considered to be flexible. In the coupled mode analysis 2 Way Fluid Structure Interaction analysis is carried out. The material properties and the results obtained from the analysis is compared to select the best out of the three materials. The change in the aerodynamic properties of the wing when it is considered to be flexible is also highlighted by a method of comparison. From the results obtained, it is observed that Aluminium Metal Matrix Composite has the least deformation for the same loading and can withstand higher stress. Hence, Aluminium Metal Matrix Composite exhibits better characteristics in comparison with Glass Fibre Reinforced Polymer and Aluminium 7075 T-6. Additionally, it is noticed that the aerodynamic properties of the wing is reduced when it is considered as a flexible structure. This can be highlighted by the 5.42% decrease in the L/D ratio between the CFD analysis and the 2 Way FSI analysis results. Abstract (sommario):
As an important part of the quadruped robot, the leg determines its performance. Flexible legs or flexible joints aid in the buffering and adaptability of robots. At present, most flexible quadruped robots only have two-dimensional flexibility or use complex parallel structures to achieve three-dimensional flexibility. This research will propose a new type of three-dimensional flexible structure. This passive compliant three-dimensional flexibility reduces the weight and complex structure of the robot. The anti-impact performance of the robot is verified by a side impact experiment. The simulation and experiments show that the robot still has good stability even under a simple algorithm and that the flexible leg can reduce the impact on the quadruped robot and improve the environmental adaptability of the robot.
