Abstract (sommario):
During firing exercises in the military forces, safety accidents have occurred and caused nonbattle loss of human lives. Despite huge impact of the safety accidents in firing ranges on the military forces and civilians, the preventive measures have been limited and inflexible. In this study, to decrease the accident rate in small arm firing ranges, a methodology was presented to determine danger zones in firing ranges that resulted from direct bullets or ricochets during firing exercises. On the basis of ballistic theory and the actual terrain data surveyed by a drone, the danger zone of OO Firing Range was identified by schematizing the trajectories of the direct bullets and ricochets. The Monte Carlo simulation (MCS) with the accuracy of the small arm on the terrain data showed that the danger zone of the current firing range was limited due to topographic advantages. However, when human errors were included in the MCS, the danger zones were significantly enlarged. The methodology of the present study can provide a safety check-up model that identifies danger zones in the firing ranges used by the Army.

Abstract (sommario):
Small-caliber firearms can produce impulse noises that frequently exceed 150 dB peak sound pressure level (dB pSPL) and can approach 185 dB pSPL. These impulse noises can present a significant risk for noise-induced hearing loss for the unprotected ear and pose a risk for persons wearing hearing protection that is possibly poorly fitted or insufficient. For range safety officers and personnel who work in the firing range on a regular basis, the daily cumulative effects of noise exposure can lead to increased fatigue and stress. Acoustic treatments of the reflective surfaces can mitigate these health risks. This paper will review some community noise guidelines as well as health and safety regulations. As a manufacturer of acoustic range treatments, the Troy System materials will be reviewed with regards to their laboratory performance and their capabilities to reduce noise in various firing ranges. One aspect of performance that may be overlooked is the safety features of the materials which Troy Acoustics provides, such as flammability, ability to be cleaned, and the resistance to moisture and mold.

Abstract (sommario):
The intrinsic properties of tonically firing neurons in the cochlear nucleus contribute to representing average sound intensity by favoring synaptic integration across auditory nerve inputs, reducing phase locking to fine temporal acoustic structure and enhancing envelope locking. To determine whether tonically firing neurons of the avian cochlear nucleus angularis (NA) resemble ideal integrators, we investigated their firing responses to noisy current injections during whole cell patch-clamp recordings in brain slices. One subclass of neurons (36% of tonically firing neurons, mainly subtype tonic III) showed no significant changes in firing rate with noise fluctuations, acting like pure integrators. In contrast, many tonically firing neurons (>60%, mainly subtype tonic I or II) showed a robust sensitivity to noisy current fluctuations, increasing their firing rates with increased fluctuation amplitudes. For noise-sensitive tonic neurons, the firing rate vs. average current curves with noise had larger maximal firing rates, lower gains, and wider dynamic ranges compared with FI curves for current steps without noise. All NA neurons showed fluctuation-driven patterning of spikes with a high degree of temporal reliability and millisecond spike time precision. Single-spiking neurons in NA also responded to noisy currents with higher firing rates and reliable spike trains, although less precisely than nucleus magnocellularis neurons. Thus some NA neurons function as integrators by encoding average input levels over wide dynamic ranges regardless of current fluctuations, others detect the degree of coherence in the inputs, and most encode the temporal patterns contained in their inputs with a high degree of precision.

Abstract (sommario):
Daily thousands of military officers from security forces use fire arms, sometimes in actions against crime or in mandatory training seasons. Despite of this, there is a few information about the risk associated with firing ranges, especially when heavy weapons are used in a hard training seasons with hard physical work and elevated number of rounds, the security forces might be under risk of intoxication. Other types of exposure with less frequency and intensity, but using a high lead containing ammunition and different types of weapons, like in the ballistics forensic cases are not yet sufficiently studied. Data from these types of occupational exposure in these environments are important in order to establish safety working procedures. The goal in this research is to study the occupational exposure in the police department and the ballistics laboratories in personal who are under the risk of this exposure in their routinely daily work and during the training courses in the Sao Paulo´s Military Police Department. In order to reach this, some biological materials were sampled (blood, urine and saliva) as well as air samples from the environment in the firing ranges during routinely daily work. In the two studied cases the monitored airborne lead varied in accordance with the type of weapon and ammunition used, and was ultra passed the limit of exposure established in the norm NR-15 (100 μg/m3) after the shot gun was used during the training season (216 μg/m3). The average and standard deviation of lead content in blood before (3,3 μg/dL ± 0,7) and after (18,2 μg/dL ± 5,1) de training season shows a significant rise of the lead levels in a very short period of time. An increment of the lead and antimony levels in urine was demonstrated. The other studied case, in the ballistics laboratory showed minor increments of lead in blood and airborne residues when compared with the limits established in the norm NR- 7 (60 μg/dL) but when compared in a cohort study the data lead to establish a significant difference between the exposed group from the ballistics and the control group. These results let us to design a proposal to safely work in these environments and to give the recommendations in the engineering design of the indoor ranges. The implemented changes will lead to minimize the risk associated with the use of weapons and lead containing ammunitions. The conclusions of the present work contribute to adequateness of the related legislation and the tolerance limits of exposure used in the occupational health practice.

Abstract (sommario):
The use of firearms creates noise pollution, release of toxic elements and a risk that the projectiles miss the targets and end up outside of the firing range. One of the solutions to these issues is to erect walls and a roof around the range, and thus create an indoor firing range. This might however increase the range users’ exposure to toxic elements related to the discharge of firearms. To mitigate this the indoor firing range needs a properly designed and well-functioning ventilation system. The purpose of this study is to evaluate how ventilation systems for indoor firing ranges should be designed in order to remove the toxic elements released when shooting. The study is primarily focused on lead pollution, but the results can also be generalised for a multitude of other relevant pollutants. The study is part of the Swedish Fortifications Agency (Fortifikationsverket) project regarding the design of future indoor firing ranges. The design parameters for ventilation systems at indoor firing ranges are regulated by the occupational safety and health regulations. In the final part of the study the authors also address other important aspects to create a safe working environment at indoor firing ranges. This study is conducted as a research review where literature from 1975 up until today has been studied. Search terms based on permutations of “shooting”, “firing”, “range”, “ventilation” and “firearm” have been used in the Web of Science and Scopus databases. The resulting list, after being culled for duplicates and “false positives”, contained approximately 70 articles. Reviewing these articles let us identify the design parameters used both internationally and nationally in Sweden. We also identified the original report that most of the internationally available literature is based upon. In this Bachelor of Science thesis, we also raise some questions related to the original report and the prerequisites it was based upon. The result of the research survey is that the ventilation for indoor firing ranges should be designed for laminar flow (piston flow) in the direction from the shooters towards the bullet trap. The air flow should be between 0,25 and 0,4 m/s (50 to 75 feet per minute). A good tool when designing the range ventilation is CFD simulations. CFD simulations allow for early phase evaluation of different design solutions. Similar simulations can also be used when problem solving problems on already existing ranges, if any. Furthermore, both cleaning and personal hygiene are crucial components to achieve a safe working environment at indoor firing ranges. To facilitate cleaning the range should have surface materials that are non-porous and easy to clean. Washing facilities for work clothes and personal hygiene should be present. These results are addressed as part of the discussion chapter in the Bachelor of Science thesis where two basic scenarios are formulated, one for building a new indoor firing range, and one for redesigning an existing indoor firing range.

In the police general education and training, the shooting training is one of the most important subjects. In order to elaborate the shooting technique of police staff and enhance the extent of all sorts of strategies, the complement of police shooting and fighting training is fairly frequent. In addition to excellent teaching staff and courses, the well-managed indoor firing range is required. In recent years, incidents, such as murdering policemen and taking over the pistols, are reported frequently. When facing the powerfully armed criminals, the probability of police death will be enhanced if the shooting training and range management is not well-prepared. In the past, the first priority of the management of the police shooting range is the shooting technique and duty equipment, the safety management of indoor range is seldom emphasized. The quality and the standard of indoor shooting range must be increased in order to offer the better shooting environment for police training; therefore, the first goal of improving police shooting quality is to make a perfect security management of indoor firing range. This thesis is divided into five chapters. Chapter One is an introduction, explaining the research motivation, purpose, method and procedures. Chapter Two focuses on the literature review. The range laws in Taiwan and USA are analyzed and compared. Moreover, collecting domestic and range accident relevant information on the reasons for the occurrence of range accidents, characteristics and damages, and providing reference direction of the domestic police indoor range field survey. Chapter Three investigates the police indoor firing range and analyze the status of the police authorities of the northern region, based on more frequent uses of three indoor ranges, the following points, such as (1) safety equipment design, (2) the range rules, (3) staff, (4) Industrial safety and hygiene, (5) waste, (6) operating procedures. For the six measures, and relevant information, we can elaborate problems on police safety management of indoor range. Chapter Four analyzes the information based on Chapters Two and Three and Foreign literature to set up the range safety strategies, which are included: (1) Establish regulations, (2) range assessment, (3) Personnel Protection, (4) Industrial safety and hygiene, (5) Education and training, (6) Waste management, (7) Professional training. Finally, the conclusions and suggestions are given in Chapter Five.

Abstract (sommario):
AbstractAll-optical experiments promise neuroscientists an unprecedented possibility to manipulate and measure neuronal circuits with single-cell resolution. They rely on highly fine-tuned microscopes with complex optical designs. Of similar importance are genetically encoded optical actuators and indicators that also have to be optimized for such experiments. A particular challenge in these experiments is the detection of natural firing patterns via genetically encoded indicators while avoiding optical cross-activation of neurons that are photon-sensitized to allow optical replay of these patterns. Most optogenetic tools are sensitive in a broad spectral range within the visible spectrum, which impedes artifact-free read-and-write access to neuronal circuits. Nonetheless, carefully matching biophysical properties of actuators and indicators can permit unambiguous excitation with a single wavelength in a so-called single-beam all-optical experiment. In this chapter, we evaluate the current understanding of these biological probes and describe the possibilities and limitations of those tools in the context of the all-optical single-beam experiment. Furthermore, we review new insights into the photophysical properties of actuators, and propose a new strategy for a single-beam two-photon excitation experiment to monitor activity minimizing cross-activation with the actuators. Finally, we will highlight aspects for future developments of these tools.

Abstract (sommario):
This paper presents performance evaluation of varying triggering angles on single-phase semi bridge controlled AC-DC Converter, which are, dependent on the deferment angles. This article is meant for adequately identifying the better range of deferment or delay angles for controlled rectification for optimal performance of the single-phase half wave AC–to-DC converter. The single-phase half wave controlled rectifier is formed by combination of thyristor power switch, power cables and triggering circuit in the presence of supply voltage and the load/s. This article is also used to find out the levels of total harmonic distortions, amplitudes and the nature of the output voltage of single-phase half bridge controlled rectifier at varying firing angles. It also presented the clear convenient range of firing angles to be used for AC-DC rectified based appliances that have not been shown in other work done online in this perspective. The overall system is modeled and simulated in MatLab 2018. The outcomes of the investigations are that: (i) the best operating ranges of triggering actions occurred after delay angles of 15∘ and 30∘, (ii) the output voltage or current of the rectifier after delay angles of 15∘ and 30∘ needs small size of filter components, (iii) the proposed system has low harmonic distortions after delay angles of 15∘ and 30∘ (iv) at delay angle of 180∘, the output of the system turned in complete AC waveform that are detrimental to connecting it directly to DC loads, hence complete avoidance of operating after delay angle of 180∘.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract This chapter considers the environmental legacy of World War II and how scholars have approached this topic. Emphasizing the tangible consequences of this war, most scholars agree that World War II decisively transformed global ecosystems in complex ways. In particular, historians have identified the enormous devastation of rural landscapes and cities that occurred during the war. They have also generally agreed that the effects of marshalling natural resources for war, such as forests, have had more enduring effects on global environments than combat. Finally, this chapter points out some areas, such as the research on “militarized landscapes,” where less agreement exists. In the case of “militarized landscapes,” scholars have debated, among other things, the discourse surrounding habitat protection and species loss at former military training grounds, firing ranges, and other sites.

Abstract (sommario):
Chronic postsurgical pain (CPSP) develops after a surgical procedure but increases its intensity and persists beyond the healing process without another cause to explain it. The incidence ranges from 5–85%, according to the type of surgery. Patients who develop CPSP may have a protracted ambulation, cardiac and pulmonary complications and increased morbidity and mortality. Several risk factors have been found related to the development of CPSP: female gender, young age, genetic predisposition, and psychosocial problems, hence prevention, early identification and treatment of these factors is essential. Several guidelines recommend the use of multimodal analgesia to treat postoperative pain, and the perioperative management seems to have a preventive role in the development of CPSP. Regional anesthesia (RA) either neuraxial or peripheral nerve blocks, by modulating signaling created by a surgical incision, play a key role in the prevention of CPSP. Local anesthetics have anti-inflammatory properties which decrease sensitization, reduce ectopic firing of neurons, cytokines expression and decrease neutrophil priming. RA reduces pain signals to the spinal cord and supraspinal and cortical nociceptive centers. RA along with other pharmacologic interventions can improve the CPSP as well as the physical and social functionality.

Abstract (sommario):
Replacement of fossil fuel by biomass-derived fuel is currently under study in the Netherlands within the context of CO2 -neutral electricity production. In view of this, co-firing biogas in the natural-gas fired Eems gas turbine power plant is being considered. This would entail extension of the power station with a biomass gasification plant for the production of biogas. The main unit of the Electrabel Eemshaven Power Station consists of five GE MS9001FA-gas turbines. A target is to replace up to 13% of natural gas consumption by biogas. The objective of the current project was to determine the impact of co-firing on the flame behavior. Therefore various options for biogas co-firing using combinations of pilot and premix burners have been studied. Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations of the combustion process using a geometrical model of the complete combustion chamber have been performed. The flow conditions at the premix burner outlets were determined with a separate, detailed CFD model of the burner, simulating the fuel-air mixing with the required high accuracy. Advanced combustion modeling with help of the detailed GRI 3.0-reaction mechanism was used, as well as simpler models for fast chemical kinetics. A method was devised for calibrating the applied combustion models. Various firing strategies involving the premix and pilot burners were analyzed. Safe ranges for biogas co-firing have been determined in this first feasibility study.

Abstract (sommario):
A computational model of glutamate dynamics in the PFC-NAc syapse is developed. The mechanisms considered are release of glutamate into the synapse, diffusion of synaptic glutamate into the extracellular space, Glu added by cystine-glutamate exchanger, Glu removal via transporters, and binding to mGluR's. The model will be used to determine the relative impact of the different mechanisms on Glu homeostasis, by using information about Glu levels and ranges for the known parameters and kinetic constants. The model will then be integrated with a PFC cell firing model to investigate the effects of cocaine-induced cellular adaptations in the PFC-NAc glutamatergic pathway.

Abstract (sommario):
This paper introduces and presents validation of the Constant Pressure Sequential Combustion system (denoted CPSC), a second generation concept developed for and applied to the new Ansaldo GT36 H-class gas turbine combustors. It has evolved from the well-established sequential burner technology applied to all current GT26 and GT24 gas turbines, and contains all architectural improvements implemented since original inception of this engine frame in 1994, with beneficial effects on the operation turndown, fuel flexibility, on the overall system robustness, and featuring the required aspects to stay competitive in the present day energy market. The applied air and fuel management therefore facilitate emission and dynamics control at both the extremely high and low firing temperature ranges required for existing and future Ansaldo gas turbine engine classes.

Abstract (sommario):
During the summer of 1996, the TransAlaska Pipeline System (TAPS) experienced a vibration problem near Thompson Pass which is 25 miles north of Valdez and is part of the Chugach Mountain Range, the most southerly of the three mountain ranges which the pipeline crosses on its route from Prudhoe Bay to the Port of Valdez. The vibrations could, on occasion, be detected by residents living near the pipeline at the bottom of the pass. Close to the source of the phenomena, small bushes could be seen moving in response to the seismic shocks and a noise similar to “mortars firing in the distance” could be heard. Alyeska Pipeline Service Company initiated an extensive investigation and quickly determined that the seismic shocks were a result of pressure pulses originating near the slackline-packline interface. This only occurred when the slackline-packline interface was positioned near a terraced portion of the pipeline topography on the downstream side of the pass. This knowledge allowed Alyeska Pipeline to control the pulsations by backpressuring the pipeline and moving the slackline-packline interface well above the terrace location.

Abstract (sommario):
The US Congress codified the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966 (NHPA), the nation’s most effective cultural resources legislation to date, mostly through establishing the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). The NHPA requires Federal agencies to address their cultural resources, which are defined as any prehistoric or historic district, site, building, structure, or object. Section 110of the NHPA requires Federal agencies to inventory and evaluate their cultural resources, and Section 106 requires them to determine the effect of Federal undertakings on those potentially eligible for the NRHP. Fort McCoy is entirely within Monroe County in west-central Wisconsin. It was first established as the Sparta Maneuver Tract in 1909.The post was renamed Camp McCoy in 1926. Since 1974, it has been known as Fort McCoy. This report provides a historic context for ranges, features, and buildings associated with the post’s training lands in support of Section 110 of the NHPA.
