Abstract (sommario):
AbstractCharles Gildon (1665–1724) is known today as the ultimate hack writer of Restoration England. Nonetheless, his two fiction collections in the ‘rifled mailbag’ genre — The Post‐Boy Rob'd of His Mail (1692) and The Post‐Man Robb'd of His Mail (1719) — contain insights concerning the structures and practices of information gathering in early modern Europe. This essay places these fictions by Gildon in their historical and literary contexts, including his repurposing of the Italian Il Corriero svaligiato by Ferrante Pallavicino, the relation to John Dunton's Athenian Mercury, and the use of addresses and occupations of letters to describe the geopolitics of Restoration London and its surround.

Abstract (sommario):
This article examines the ways in which Pakistani writers—Jamil Ahmad’s The Wandering Falcon and Fatima Bhutto’s The Shadow of the Crescent Moon—rebut violence and politics of life and death in the tribal areas of Pakistan against the backdrop of effects of wars in the neighbouring Afghanistan. Even though violence varies between and within countries, Pakistan and its tribal areas have long been seen as the epicentre to execute or take refuge by those who have been involved in the acts of violence and extremism in the region. This tribal region due to its special constitutional status has been considered as safe haven for people fighting against their own state and in the region; first against the Soviet and later the Unites States-led war against terrorism which affected the life of people living in the region. Through the examination of literary texts, I argue that life in the tribal areas of Pakistan was managed through indigenous structures which maintained discipline for centuries before the region was exposed to foreign occupations and wars in the neighbouring Afghanistan; as a result of foreign occupations (Soviet and war on terror) in the neighbouring areas the strategies of domination, subjugation and occupation also changed. Using the theoretical framework of violence and politics of life and death developed by Michael Foucault, Achille Mbembe, Giorgio Agamben, Zygmunt Baumann and others, this article highlights the shift from ‘making live and letting die’ to ‘let live and make die’ in the tribal region between Pakistan and Afghanistan. It is qualitative research with a specific focus on violence in the selected texts in the context of tribal areas. The similar effects in other parts of the country can be explored through future studies. Keywords: Biopolitics, Necropolitics, Violence, Tribal Areas of Pakistan, Effects of Wars

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract J. M. Coetzee's Slow Man considers “care” in contemporary liberal-capitalist societies, including the ostensibly frivolous care of and care for literature. In contrast to grander affects and occupations, care often seems to be “just care,” as if it fails to live up to certain criteria of reality in much the same way that one says something is “just fiction.” If in its literary investigation of such serious issues as disability, aging, and immigration, Slow Man turns into a reflection on the ontology of fiction, this is not mere metafictional frivolity—for care shares the disparaged form of fiction. Coetzee's Elizabeth Costello writings, of which Slow Man appears to be the last, advocate in fiction an “ethics of care.” They are concerned with modes of attention that lack the categorical determinacy of the discourse of rights and of justice and are instead characterized by what I propose to call “justness.” In this light, the novel can be read as examining the skepticism and disappointment with which, on account of this justness, earnest pleas for an ethics of care, or apologies for fiction, are met. The advocacy of care, as of fiction, requires not only good will but also good humor, even if this comes at the cost of being taken seriously. Accordingly, Slow Man proves to be one of the most heavy-going but also lighthearted of Coetzee's novels. It is, after all, “just a joke.”

Abstract (sommario):
Not only is the workplace a significant site of the social construction of feminine and masculine identities but in an increasing range of service sector occupations, a gendered bodily performance is a significant part of selling a product. In this paper, we draw on Butler's notion of gender identity as a regulatory fiction to investigate the consequences of the specificity of embodiment and gendered performances. Drawing on three case studies in the City of London, we explore the differential fictions constructed by men and women engaged in interactive service work in a professional capacity in merchant banks. We examine the ways in which women are embodied and/or represented as ‘woman’ in the workplace, comparing women's sense of themselves and their everyday workplace experiences with those of men doing the same job. Our aim is to establish whether the necessity of selling oneself as part of the product in such service sector employment challenges the idealisation of male workers as disembodied rational subjects, while not necessarily disrupting the inferior position of embodied women.

'Wszystkie zajęcia Yoirysa Manuela' [All occupations of Yoirys Manuel] by Adam Kwaśny (2017) is a collection of stories about the inhabitants of the city of Trinidad in Cuba, which can be read as an attempt to look for a new approach in the travel literature and reportage writing. By the use of the techniques typical for magical realism and non-fiction literature at the same time, the work shows the reality of the city from the perspective of its inhabitants, or more precisely: from the perspective of a narrator coming from the outside world, but sharing the beliefs and worldview of the described people.

Abstract (sommario):
Statement of the problem. The objectives of this study include determining the role of the use of charactonymsin multi-genre texts for children written by English classical and modern authors. The first task was to identify the charactonyms in the works of fiction of three English children's writers. The second task is the etymological and lexico-semantic analysis of the charactonyms in the children's works of art under study in order to obtain information about whether the character is positive or negative. The third task of the study was to identify the functions of charactonyms in the works analyzed. Results. The article presents the charactonyms of the characters selected by a continuous sampling method from the works written by English children's writers of different time periods. Further, the etymological analysis of the charactonyms and their decoding in the analyzed works written by R. Dahl, J. K. Rowling and F. Simon and the role of the charactonyms in those works are defined. Conclusion. The study revealed 11 functions of charactonyms in the analyzed works of fiction for children of three British authors. Identifying, comic, style-forming, allusive, genre-forming, onomatopoeic functions were identified, as well as functions characterizing appearance, occupations or professions, behavior, speech and describing character.

Artikkeli käsittelee digitaalisten ihmistieteiden menetelmien mahdollisuuksia suomalaisen näytelmäelokuvan tutkimuksessa. Tarkastelu perustuu Movie Making Finland: Finnish fiction films as audiovisual big data, 1907–2017 (MoMaF) -hankkeessa tehtyyn työhön, jossa olemme hyödyntäneet Kansallisen audiovisuaalisen instituutin ylläpitämän Elonet-tietokannan tarjoamia metatietoja. Avainsanat: digitaaliset ihmistieteet, suomalainen elokuva, metatieto, elokuvahistoria, tietokannatCowherd, Maid and Housewife: Professions and titles in Finnish fiction film, 1907–2017The article explores the potential of digital humanities methods in the study of Finnish fiction film. It is based on the work carried out in the project Movie Making Finland: Finnish fiction films as audiovisual big data, 1907-2017 (MoMaF), where we have made use of the metadata provided by the Elonet database maintained by the National Audiovisual Institute. The article examines Finnish drama film as a body of more than 1500 works, covering the period from the end of the Grand Duchy to the 21st century, and aims to provide a long-term overview. The article asks how work, titles and occupations have been imagined on the screen, and what changes have taken place in this social register. The aim is to test how the metadata in the Elonet database could be used to build up a picture from large-scale film data sets. The article clearly shows how the professional spectrum of Finnish cinema has been shrinking since the 1950s. This is illustrated, for example, by the gradual disappearance of rural professions on the screen as the film audience moved from the countryside to the cities. Since the turn of the millennium, the characters in films have been characterised by references to lifestyle rather than professions. Keywords: digital humanities, Finnish cinema, metadata, film history, databases

Abstract (sommario):
According to theory, social change is interconnected with changes in mental phenomena and language. In the present study, secular change in the usage frequencies of common English personality adjectives ( n = 336) qualifying the word person was analyzed over the period 1900 to 2002. It was hypothesized that words that represent those personality traits that are advantageous in occupations typical for modern societies have increased in frequency. The results show changes in the frequencies of individual words but stability across the five major categories of trait adjectives in the Google Books English fiction corpus. A modest increase for Extraversion-, Agreeableness-, and Stability-related adjectives was observed in the Google Books English 2012 corpus. Frequency of Intellect-related words increased up to 1960 and then declined. The results suggest that (a) human nature has changed little over the 20th century, (b) generational changes in personality are not strongly reflected in language, or (c) the corpus linguistic method used is not reliable for studying generational changes in personality.

Abstract (sommario):
The modernist retreat of the author from his/her prerogated space as “authorial persona” precipitated the radical changes in the nature and form fictional space that bifurcates into narratival and narrational. This evacuation of the authorial persona space, effected by the cultural pressures that render “totalization” difficult, transfers the interpretation responsibility to the reader. Postmodernist fictions, in this respect, push the reader to occupy more space in the narrative by leaving sizable gaps in it; metafiction presents itself as a logical outcome of this process. When the reader has secured a place within the narrative ontology, the metafictional author contends with the reader for the occupation of fictional space. This results into the foregrounding of the fictional space and fictionality in general. The dynamics of this process relates to a consideration of the space of the speaker, the narrational space of fiction. This paper discusses the issue of postmodernist fictional space with reference to pertinent theories and relevant postmodern novels as examples that clarify the discussion.

Morris, Alan I. "The German Occupation in recent French fiction : an analysis of the literary 'mode retro'". Thesis, University of St Andrews, 1985. http://hdl.handle.net/10023/6462.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
This thesis attempts to analyse and characterise the mode rétro, the remarkable renewal of interest in the German Occupation of France, which is coloured by an extensive re-evaluation of the period's significance. An introduction places this fashion in its literary, social and historical context, revealing how, from 1940 to 1969, a collective and predominantly Gaullist 'myth' of the Resistance became established, with the result that the national response to invasion was accepted to be one of wide-spread heroism and revolt. Part I studies the reaction to such résistancialisme, showing how this orthodox interpretation of events was undermined and, for many, discredited, and offering explanations of the timing and direction of the new view. Part II focuses on the fiction, memoirs, autobiographies and biographies of the younger authors, those who have no direct adult experience of the années noires. It is suggested that their obvious obsession with absent parent-figures reflects their awareness that the past has been misrepresented and their heritage rendered problematic. Their sole means of escape from this predicament, their only source of emotional relief is seen to lie in the creation of a personal account of the early 1940s running contrary to the prevalent orthodoxy, the fabrication of a 'counter-myth'. It is thus the notion of myth which links the various sections of the survey, and so gives the thesis its overall unity.

Adleman, Daniel. "Occupational violence and the crisis in white masculinity in turn-of-the-millennium American fiction". Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/58758.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
My dissertation examines white masculine anxieties compelled by death and violence in Don DeLillo’s White Noise (1985), Bret Easton Ellis’ American Psycho (1991), Chuck Palahniuk’s Fight Club (1996), and Philip Roth’s American Pastoral (1997). A close reading of the four novels in tandem reveals important dynamics of a subgenre of American masculinist fiction in a period of rapid technological change. The novels represent the travails of white male protagonists whose "occupational spheres," comprising jobs, domestic spaces and recreational pursuits, are meant to protect them from undesirable threats and the dread of death. I argue that these protagonists, who are immersed in their respective occupational spheres, do not comprehend the complex violence in which their occupations implicate them, nor do they appreciate the impossibility of insulating their “interior” simulated habitats from the supposedly toxic “outside” worlds that surround them. In the first chapter, I analyze Don DeLillo’s White Noise, which I claim inaugurates the subgenre of American fiction to which all four novels belong, and I conclude that the protagonist, Jack Gladney, is caught up in a cycle of "re-mediation." His efforts to remedy his ills are only remediated into a medial milieu that further undermines his agency. In the second chapter, I examine American Psycho and track Patrick Bateman’s occupational sphere, which manifests the classed, raced, and sexualized systemic violence of Wall Street finance. The third chapter on Fight Club explores the anonymous narrator’s violent occupation as an actuarial risk analyst for a major automotive manufacturer. The last chapter, on American Pastoral, analyzes the insidious violence of the protagonist Seymour Levov’s occupation as a glove-manufacturing entrepreneur and seeming-apogee of the Jewish American dream of white assimilation. This dissertation project is partly an intervention in DeLillo, Easton Ellis, Palahniuk, and Roth criticism, much of which is still atavistically stuck in a pre-digital moment. By and large, the existing criticism, I contend, does not pay enough attention to the densely-mediated environments inhabited by the novels’ protagonists. My engagement with these novels draws upon rhetorical analysis, genre theory, psychoanalysis, critical race theory, gender studies, and new media studies.

Radhi, Sattar Jabbar. "La quête identitaire chez les personnages romanesques de Patrick Modiano : entre fiction et histoire". Thesis, Lyon 2, 2015. http://www.theses.fr/2015LYO20066/document.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
This thesis’ aim is to expose the meaning and evolution of a search for identity which stems from an original loss, or the absence of all things (absence of life) which provokes an urgent need to find oneself. This paradoxical quest initiates a movement that is both centripetal and centrifugal. That movement is apparent through the desire of building an identity as well as through the will to permanently erase all identity. The study draws and dwells upon a dialectical logic which shapes the conscience of the self throughout a long fictional initiation. While analysing the roots of that identity tension from a historical standpoint, we aim at answering the following question: to what extent identity proves unattainable in Modiano’s first trilogy ? Since the thesis explores a search for identity torn between fiction and history, we ask if the question of identity as posed by the author points to conflictual and problematic identity on scientific grounds. We built our study around the turbulent journey of narrators situated in a fictional and threatening context where components of an all-Parisian fictional geography come together. In front of history’s ambiguities and memory’s disorders, writing proves the only means capable of giving Modiano’s narrators a writer’s identity, thus enabling them to fight annihilation and non-existence. Though narrators do not succeed in finding themselves through writing and through other people’s memory, they sometimes manage to get closer to their identity through asymptotic writing which warrants somewhat identity. From the fragmentary nature of the texts, we explore the evolution of narrators. The latter reflect the author’s identity which progressively takes shape as they go back in time. Last, it can be said that the protagonist manages to get out of the disorderly times, which for a long period seemed inevitable, and thus attains a greater lucidity in his literary search for identity

Emanuel, Elizabeth Frances. "Writing the oriental woman : an examination of the representation of Japanese women in contemporary Australian crime fiction". Thesis, Queensland University of Technology, 2009. https://eprints.qut.edu.au/64475/1/Elizabeth_Emanuel_Exegesis.pdf.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
This study considers the challenges in representing women from other cultures in the crime fiction genre. The study is presented in two parts; an exegesis and a creative practice component consisting of a full length crime fiction novel, Batafurai. The exegesis examines the historical period of a section of the novel—post-war Japan—and how the area of research known as Occupation Studies provides an insight into the conditions of women during this period. The exegesis also examines selected postcolonial theory and its exposition of representations of the 'other' as a western construct designed to serve Eurocentric ends. The genre of crime fiction is reviewed, also, to determine how characters purportedly representing Oriental cultures are constricted by established stereotypes. Two case studies are examined to investigate whether these stereotypes are still apparent in contemporary Australian crime fiction. Finally, I discuss my own novel, Batafurai, to review how I represented people of Asian background, and whether my attempts to resist stereotype were successful. My conclusion illustrates how novels written in the crime fiction genre are reliant on strategies that are action-focused, rather than character-based, and thus often use easily recognizable types to quickly establish frameworks for their stories. As a sub-set of popular fiction, crime fiction has a tendency to replicate rather than challenge established stereotypes. Where it does challenge stereotypes, it reflects a territory that popular culture has already visited, such as the 'female', 'black' or 'gay' detective. Crime fiction also has, as one of its central concerns, an interest in examining and reinforcing the notion of societal order. It repeatedly demonstrates that crime either does not pay or should not pay. One of the ways it does this is to contrast what is 'good', known and understood with what is 'bad', unknown, foreign or beyond our normal comprehension. In western culture, the east has traditionally been employed as the site of difference, and has been constantly used as a setting of contrast, excitement or fear. Crime fiction conforms to this pattern, using the east to add a richness and depth to what otherwise might become a 'dry' tale. However, when used in such a way, what is variously eastern, 'other' or Oriental can never be paramount, always falling to secondary side of the binary opposites (good/evil, known/unknown, redeemed/doomed) at work. In an age of globalisation, the challenge for contemporary writers of popular fiction is to be responsive to an audience that demands respect for all cultures. Writers must demonstrate that they are sensitive to such concerns and can skillfully manage the tensions caused by the need to deliver work that operates within the parameters of the genre, and the desire to avoid offence to any cultural or ethnic group. In my work, my strategy to manage these tensions has been to create a back-story for my characters of Asian background, developing them above mere genre types, and to situate them with credibility in time and place through appropriate historical research.

Crabb, Dawn Nora. "Navigating the Wreck: Writing women’s experience of the Japanese Occupation of Singapore. Salvaged from the Wreck: A novel -and- Diving into the Wreck: A critical essay". Thesis, Edith Cowan University, Research Online, Perth, Western Australia, 2021. https://ro.ecu.edu.au/theses/2416.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
This thesis is in two parts. The first and major part consists of a historical novel followed, in part two, by an essay. The title of this thesis, “Navigating the Wreck”, refers metaphorically to the Fall of Singapore in 1942, the ensuing human tragedy unleashed on the people of Singapore and Malaya, and the literary and historical processes of exploring, interpreting and depicting the past. The Japanese occupation of Singapore has, to date, been described mostly by Western historians and former prisoners of war who have forged a predominant patriarchal narrative. In that narrative—despite the all-encompassing nature of the occupation and the cataclysmic effect it had on civilians—women are virtually invisible. The objective of this thesis is to privilege women’s experiences by ethically gathering, analysing and re-imagining the accounts of a group of women of different ethnic and cultural backgrounds—Chinese, Indian, Malay, Eurasian—who lived through the occupation, using historical fiction to engage as broad a readership as possible. As well as literary praxis, research centres on analysis of relevant literature, including eight ethnically diverse published female memoirs and eleven women’s oral histories held by the National Archive of Singapore. The essay discusses the artefact-centred, pragmatic and self-reflexive bricolage approach of this thesis, its feminist and phenomenological framework and my ethical responsibility and outsider authorial position as a white Australian woman reliant on local witness accounts. Feminist concerns addressed in the thesis are invisibility, plurality and intersectionality and I adopt a critical feminist phenomenology based on five aspects of Simone de Beauvoir’s The Second Sex to discuss the aims and the research and writing processes of the thesis. Working within that framework, I summarised and categorised female oral interview data from audio and written transcripts enabling comparison of each woman’s individual experience of the war and the effects that the occupation had on each woman’s life situation, revealing a diverse set of experiences, some of which influenced my literary choices. By immersing myself in the particular remembered experiences of each of the female interviewees and considering their stories against the tapestry of my own extensive lived experience of the physical, cultural and social world of Singapore, as well as an in-depth investigation of other historical data and male and female written memoirs, I identified gaps and silences that needed to be addressed. These include the strategic household, wage earning, food-supplying and charitable role that women played in the dangerous and difficult situation of the occupation as well as the ignored or marginalised active participation of women in Singapore’s pre-war anti-colonial communist movements, support for and armed participation in anti-Japanese activities in China as well as the jungle-based guerrilla militias in Malaya, and the urban anti-Japanese underground in Singapore. The essay weaves the creative thinking and practical processes of researching and writing the novel through discussion of practice, literature, theory, methodology and craft, retrieving and exposing what is usually submerged in the creative process to indicate a matrix of production.

In the discussion of Taiwan's labor literature, most scholars regard Yang Ching-chu's literature in 1970’s as a starting point. However, the labor literature studies before 1970’s is more scarce. In particular, during the Japanese occupation of Taiwan's industrialization starting point, the government in the past period mentioned the Japanese’ contribution to Taiwan mostly implicitly, in order to consolidate the legitimacy of the government. Abstract (sommario):
AbstractThis chapter considers one of Philip Kerr’s late period Bernie Gunther novels, Greeks Bearing Gifts (2018), for the ways it engages with one of the darkest moments in twentieth-century Greek history: the extermination of the Thessaloniki Jews during the German occupation of Greece (1939–1944). The chapter argues that Gunther’s democratic and humanist perspective, informed by a particular understanding of Marxism, which Gunther openly acknowledges, sets in motion the act of historical recovery: what is to be recovered and why it is important to do so. Kerr’s novel is not treated as objective or official history but rather history from below—where new understandings and accounts of what occurred in the past emerge from eyewitness testimonies to contest and overturn received understandings.

Abstract (sommario):
This chapter examines how Mary Shelley refashions Hesiod's search for a continuous ground of humanness that persists through catastrophic transformations of the foundations of social life. It looks at Hesiod's Works and Days, which consists of survival instructions and ontological reflections on what it means for human beings to have to repeatedly rediscover themselves in the occupations of survival. It also mentions Shelley's critics who saw willful cruelty toward humankind in The Last Man. The chapter explains how Shelley brackets the question of motive in the destruction of humankind and makes herself a proxy of Nature in bringing the era of human occupation of the earth to an end. It mentions Olaf Stapledon, an English writer of speculative fiction that focuses on how human beings relate to cosmic forces that produce drastic transformations in their physical being and form of life.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract: Chapter 2 considers the sort of advertising typically found in the SF pulps. During the formative pre-war years, advertising was seldom about the movies, but it frequently implicated and even exploited a developing film consciousness in the pulp readership. And although some have argued that, in comparison to the numerous “slick” magazines of the period, advertising was not very important to the pulps, this chapter argues otherwise, particularly noting the various film-related ads that were common to all the SF magazines, including education in film-related occupations; placement of film scripts; opportunities for screen tests; and films, cameras, and projectors that were already being marketed to the pulp readers. Those readers were seen as part of what Lizabeth Cohen has termed the new “Consumer’s Republic” of America, with its tastes and desires in consumption already being partly shaped by their experience of the new modernist art of the movies.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract During the 1880s Trafalgar Square became a popular site for political protests and occupations, but few matched the scale and violence of 13 November 1887, as the subjects of this chapter attest. Writers, artists, and activists all, Margaret Harkness, Annie Besant, Walter Crane, and William Morris, crafted their first-hand experience of Bloody Sunday into literary and visual forms that parsed the official nomenclature of the riot as an act of wilful misreading and specious naming. Swept up in the riot itself, they were exposed to the literal risks of political action and violent suppression orchestrated by the state’s nominative force. None were left in any doubt that the reading of the Riot Act was explicitly used to reverse the perceived direction of the violence and legitimate the measures taken to restore the peace. What emerges from their work is a retrospective imagining of the riot as a complex event, a collective interpretive process that is intentionally redistributive and aesthetic. Abstracting from their immediate affective experience of the violence, each writer/artist enlists a different genre or medium—autobiography, the ballad, utopian, realist fiction, illustration—to reconfigure the riot’s seemingly chaotic formlessness into narrative and poetic sequences that challenge the rhetoric of irrational spontaneity that characterized contemporary media accounts which sensationally named the events of that day, Bloody Sunday.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract At the peak of the ‘new economy’, the Swedish newspapers were reporting an interesting fact: women were entering financial services, joining not the old fashioned occupational groups such as bank clerks, but the avant-garde: traders and analysts. A survey following these announcements (Renemark 2003) revealed that the claim was unverifiable. True, there were several financial service companies reporting the arrival of female traders and analysts, but these were very small companies, and the ‘influx’ often meant one new woman employee.

Abstract (sommario):
Problems caused by Covid–19 led to the slowdowns of economic growth in many countries, which affected the labour market as well. The global recession, structural changes in economies and rapid development of robotics have also resulted in disappearance of many jobs. Hence, there is an actual need for new labour-market orientation, as well as occupational profiles that will respond to the challenges of modern business flows. Besides the changes provoked by the pandemic crisis on the world labour market, this paper also analyses the main indicators of the labour market in the Republic of Serbia. The paper also explores the need in defining new occupational profiles based on trends such as automation, robotics and sustainability.

Abstract (sommario):
All through the last decade, the Brazilian pipeline industry has invested heavily in controlling long pipeline’s inventory, leak detection systems and in energy efficiency, the latter being object of study of this paper. A sensitive area to such investments can be perceived in the efforts made to control the energy supply to pumping stations. Nevertheless, one can clearly observe the weight of tradition pending over Brazilian projects resulting in a tendency toward the use of control valves as means of pump controlling. This solution is generally believed to be simpler, more reliable and less costly than the common alternatives. Still and all, as the Brazilian pipeline industry modernizes its facilities and procedures, particularly due to economic and environmental concerns, new strategies for traditional problems are considered and assessed in engineering projects. Throughout this paper, the authors assess one such project in which the engineering staff chose to apply a variable frequency drive (VFD) instead of the traditional process automated control valve. The company that operates the system made available the necessary process data and project parameters in order to conduct a thorough assessment both from the financial and the technical points of view. Hydraulic data as well as electrical motor parameters were made available to this research as well as a yearlong worth of process instrumentation data. Brazil has a long history investing and developing technology to replace gasoline for ethanol as automotive fuel. The pumps studied, located at the city of Ribeirão Preto, are responsible for pushing ethanol through a pipeline all the way to the Refinery of Paulínia, delivering fuel to be consumed in São Paulo’s metropolitan area, the most populated location in the country. As a basis of comparison, the authors estimated the capital and operational expenditure as well as the energy consumption of a fictional control valve system for the same pipeline and then put them against actual data made available by the company. As a conclusion, the paper brings to light that, although variable frequency drive systems indeed demand a higher capital expenditure, when the operational costs are considered, they can compensate that initial investment by presenting the facility with more energy efficient operation. Furthermore, after carefully assessing the provided data, the variable frequency drive seems to result in a more continuous and smooth operation maintaining a higher occupation rate of the pipeline. Suggestions are also proposed and assessed as a guide to further investments and operational procedure changes aiming at optimizing the company’s process.
