Abstract (sommario):
Micro-resonators could be fabricated directly on the optical fiber top by micro mechanical process. The micro optical fiber resonator has more great advantages comparing with the traditional optical excited micro silicon resonators, such as being optically positioned easily between the resonator and the optical fiber end. By this way, the optical excited light through the fiber core is thus put on the micro resonator accurately and then partially reflected by the Fabry-Perot interferometer formed between fiber top and resonator surface. The reflected light from F-P interferometer was sent to the opto-electric detector PIN to demodulate the detected parameter. A matched metal layer can be deposited atop of the resonator in order to increase the optical excitation efficiency. Firstly mechanism analysis of optical excited bi-layered resonator is given by fully considering Longitudinal thermal strain effect and Bi-coating effect, and then the typical theoretical models were setup including the resonating frequency and resonant amplitude, and temperature sensing feature was simulated by computer software. The simulation results indicated that the average frequency sensitivity of temperature sensing is about 29Hz/°C.

Abstract (sommario):
A new type of quasi-distributed sensor system is implemented using an active mode locking (AML) laser cavity with multiple partially reflecting segments. The mode locking frequency of the AML laser is linearly proportional to the overall lasing cavity length. To implement multiple resonators having multiple reflection points installed in a sensing fiber, two types of partial reflectors (PRs) are implemented for an in-line configuration, one with fiber Bragg grating and the other with a fiber Fabry–Perot interferometer. Since the laser has oscillated only when the modulation frequencies for the mode locking frequency match with the corresponding resonator lengths, it is possible to read the multiple partially reflecting segments along the sensing fiber. The difference between two corresponding mode locking frequencies is changing proportionally with the segment length variation between two PRs upon strain application. The segment length change caused by the applied strain can be successfully measured with a linear sensitivity between mode locking frequency and displacement, linearity over 0.99, and spatial position resolution below meter order.

Abstract (sommario):
An opto-thermally excited optical fiber Fabry-Perot (F-P) resonant probe with suspended clamped circular graphene diaphragm is presented in this paper. Then, the dependence of resonance frequency behaviors of graphene diaphragm upon opto-mechanical factors including membrane properties, laser excitation parameters and film boundary conditions are investigated via COMSOL Multiphysics simulation. The results show that the radius and thickness of membrane will linearly affect the optical fiber light-induced temperature distribution, thus resulting in rapidly decreasing resonance frequency changes with the radius-to-thickness ratio. Moreover, the prestress can be regulated in the range of 108 Pa to 109 Pa by altering the environmental temperature with a scale factor of 14.2 MPa/K. It is important to note that the availability of F-P resonant probe with a defective clamped circular graphene membrane can be improved notably by fabricating the defected circular membrane to a double-end clamped beam, which gives a broader perspective to characterize the resonance performance of opto-thermally excited F-P resonators.

Abstract (sommario):
We present a simple, high-duty-cycle, cavity-enhanced optical absorption measurement technique based on delay-limited Pound-Drever-Hall (PDH) sideband locking. The chosen circuit naturally provides realtime readout of the amplitude quadrature of the PDH error signal, which can be mapped onto the cavity’s internal loss rate while using the phase quadrature to lock sideband frequency to the cavity mode. Our proofof-concept device comprises a 5-cm-long Fabry-Perot cavity with a 450 kHz bandwidth (finesse 6800, 350 ns power ringdown), and a feedback bandwidth of several MHz, limited primarily by the group delay of our electronics. This technique could readily be applied to other optical resonators such as fiber cavities, with potential applications in radiation dosimetry.

Abstract (sommario):
A wide range of applications such as healthcare, human comfort, agriculture, food processing and storage, and electronics manufacturing also require fast and accurate measurement of humidity and temperature. Optical fiber-based sensors have several advantages over electronic sensors, and much research has been conducted in this area in recent years. This paper describes the current trends in fiber optic temperature and humidity sensors. The evolution of optical structures aimed at humidity detection is presented, as well as a new design of an optical sensor used for this purpose. The main methods of humidity determination using fiber-optic laser reflection based on Optical fiber humidity sensor (FPI) were analyzed and experimental results were obtained. Based on temperature-sensitive strain variation, a method for temperature determination based on the specific spectral back-reflection effect of fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs) is considered. Experimental analyses were conducted on the light reflection of humidity-sensitive agarose using optical fibers based on the Fabry-Perot Interferometer (FPI). It exhibits a good linear response to relative humidity, ranging from 25 % to 95 %. During temperature measurement, the deformation changes of the Fiber Bragg Grating fibers showed excellent performance, ranging from –5 °C to 70 °C. New structures, such as resonators, are being explored to improve the resolution of fiber optic temperature and humidity sensors. In addition, recent studies on polymer optical fibers show that the sensitivity of this type of sensor has not yet been achieved. Thus, materials sensitive to humidity and temperature still need to be investigated to improve sensitivity and resolution

Abstract (sommario):
A theoretical study is presented of a figure-of-eight optical fiber resonator that has two single-mode couplers. The output intensities of the optical fiber resonator are investigated in terms of the coupling coefficients and losses. The finesse and contrast are discussed. Compared with a transversely coupled fiber Fabry–Perot resonator, this resonator has an all-fiber configuration, and is more easily realized. Compared with a direct-coupling fiber ring resonator, it offers reflected outputs that may be useful in some applications.

Abstract (sommario):
An easily fabricated Fabry-Perot optical fiber humidity sensor with high performance was presented by filling Graphene Quantum Dots (GQDs) into the Fabry-Perot resonator, which consists of two common single mode optical fibers. The relative humidity sensing performance was experimentally investigated by an interference spectrum drift between 11 %RH to 85 %RH. 0.567 nm/%RH sensitivity and 0.99917 linear correlation were found in experiments that showed high sensitivity, good and wide-range linear responding. Meanwhile, its good responding repeatability was demonstrated by two circle tests with increasing and decreasing relative humidity. For investigating the measurement influence caused by a temperature jitter, the temperature responding was experimentally investigated, which showed its linear responding with 0.033 nm/°C sensitivity. The results demonstrate the humidity sensitivity is greatly higher than the temperature sensitivity. The wavelength shift influence is 0.0198 nm with 0.6 °C max temperature jitter in the experiment, which can be ignored in humidity experiments. The fast-dynamic responses at typical humidity were demonstrated in experiments, with 5.5 s responding time and 8.5 s recovering time. The sensors with different cavity lengths were also investigated for their humidity response. All sensors gave good linear responding and high sensitivity. In addition, the relation curve between cavity length and response sensitivity also had good linearity. The combination of GQDs and single mode optical fibers showed easy fabrication and good performance for an optical fiber relative humidity sensor.

Abstract (sommario):
The article considers the procedure of torque control, which is very popular in a wide variety of industries with many design features. In marine power engineering the problems of determining the forces, torque on the shaft and power are solved by means of torsiometers with torque sensors. The most widely used torque sensors are of capacitive, induction, strain gauge and photoelectric types. It has been stated that there are limitations in the process of torque control due to the susceptibility of systems to the electromagnetic interference, lack of a high degree of protection for electrical equipment and necessary recalibration. Fiber optic systems have found application in torque measurement systems in the oil and gas and aerospace industries. The use of such systems on ships is more expensive in comparison with the technologies used today, for example, the systems based on strain gauges. It has been proposed to use an inexpensive optical measuring system based on the Pound-Drever-Hall technique with using a foil-clad strain gauge and an aluminum torsion rod. There has been illustrated the system of torque control, the phase graphs for the Fabry-Perot resonator and the graph of the resonator transmission spectrum are presented, the reflection coefficient value is given. A method for measuring the phase of a reflected beam from a Fabry-Perot resonator is being considered, the injection current of a laser is modulated by means of an electric oscillator to generate side stripes in the electric field of a laser beam. The carried out studies and calculations contribute to improving the reliability of the coastal power system; the possibility of their use in marine electrical systems has been proved.

Abstract (sommario):
A stabilized narrow-linewidth random fiber laser for strain detection, based on a three-grating ring (TGR) resonator and half-open-cavity structure, is proposed and investigated experimentally. The half-open-cavity structure proved to provide double optical gain of erbium-doped fiber, which was beneficial to increase the photon lifetime as well as further narrow the linewidth. Meanwhile, the stability and frequency noise of narrow lasing output was improved by suppressing the competition-induced undesired residual random lasing modes with the TGR resonator. The TGR resonator is composed of a double-cavity fiber Bragg grating Fabry–Perot (FBG-FP) interferometer, a section of single-mode fiber, and a circulator. The specially designed double-cavity FBG-FP interferometer embedded in the TGR resonator acted as the strain-sensing element and improved the resolution of the dynamic strain. A stable ultra-narrow linewidth of about 205 Hz was obtained. The frequency noise was reduced to about 2 Hz/√Hz. A high dynamic strain measuring resolution of 35 femto-strain (fε)/√Hz was achieved.

Abstract (sommario):
In this work, the splitting of resonance lines in a Fabry-Perot resonator formed by a section of a standard curved single-mode fiber with metal-coated ends is investigated numerically and experimentally. It is shown that this splitting is similar to the Autler-Townes splitting and results from a strong coupling between the fundamental mode of the core and the whispering gallery mode of the cladding of the curved fiber. The influence of all basic parameters of the curved resonator on the splitting of its resonance lines in the reflection and transmission spectra is considered. Prospects for the practical application of the effects studied for high-resolution optical refractometry, as well as the direction of further research are outlined.

Abstract (sommario):
We describe an apparatus for the implementation of hybrid optomechanical systems at 4 K. The platform is based on a high-finesse, micrometer-scale fiber Fabry–Perot cavity, which can be widely tuned using piezoelectric positioners. A mechanical resonator can be positioned within the cavity in the object-in-the-middle configuration by a second set of positioners. A high level of stability is achieved without sacrificing either performance or tunability, through the combination of a stiff mechanical design, passive vibration isolation, and an active Pound–Drever–Hall feedback lock incorporating a reconfigurable digital filter. The stability of the cavity length is demonstrated to be better than a few picometers over many hours both at room temperature and at 4 K.

Abstract (sommario):
A monolithic fiber laser operating in the short wavelength infrared that is suitable for CO2 gas sensing applications is proposed and presented. The current study reports a laser design based on the direct inscription of a monolithic Fabry–Perot (FP) cavity in a thulium-doped optical fiber using the femtosecond laser (FsL) plane-by-plane inscription method to produce the cavity mirrors. The FP cavity was inscribed directly into the active fiber using two wavelength-identical fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs), one with high and one with low reflectivity. Initially the effective length of the fiber was defined using a single high reflectivity FBG and subsequently a very weak FBG was inscribed at the other end of the fiber in order to demonstrate a fully monolithic fiber laser. All fiber lasers were designed for continuous wave operation at 1950 nm and characterized with respect to the power output, slope efficiency, stability, and effective resonator length. The performance of the presented monolithic laser cavities was evaluated using the same active fiber as a reference fiber spliced to FBGs inscribed in passive fiber; an improvement exceeding 12% slope efficiency is reported for the presented monolithic laser.

Abstract (sommario):
The band structure and photonic spectrum of one dimensional Thue-Morse quasicrystal composed by negative-index materials and positive-index materials are studied. We show that a new type of the omnidirectional reflection band (ORB) exists in Thue-Morse photonic heterostructures. Compared to a single Thue-Morse quasicrystal, the frequency range of the ORB in a Thue-Morse photonic heterostructure can be notably enlarged, and the width and location of the ORB do not change with Thue-Morse order. The lower edge of the ORB depends only on transverse electric (TE) polarization, while the higher edge of the ORB depends only on transversemagnetic (TM) polarization. These results imply potential applications in improving planar microcavities, optical fibers, and Fabry–Perot resonators, etc.

Abstract (sommario):
Hollow core microbubble structures are good candidates for the construction of high performance whispering gallery microresonator and Fabry-Perot (FP) interference devices. In the previous reports, most of interest was just focused on the dual-ended microbubble, but not single-ended microbubble, which could be used for tip sensing or other special areas. The thickness, symmetry and uniformity of the single-ended microbubble in previous reports were far from idealization. Thus, a new ultra-thin single-ended spherical microbubble based on the improved critical-state pressure-assisted arc discharge method was proposed and fabricated firstly in this paper, which was fabricated simply by using a commercial fusion splicer. The improvement to former paper was using weak discharge and releasing pressure gradually during the discharging process. Thus, the negative influence of gravity towards bubble deformation was decreased, and the fabricated microbubble structure had a thin, smooth and uniform surface. By changing the arc discharge parameters and the fiber position, the wall thicknesses of the fabricated microbubble could reach the level of 2 μm or less. The fiber Fabry-Perot (FP) interference technique was also used to analyze the deformation characteristic of microbubble under difference filling pressures. Finding the ends of the microbubbles had a trend of elongation with axial compression when the filling pressure was increasing. Its sensitivity to the inner pressure of microbubble samples was about ~556 nm/MPa, the bubble wall thickness was only of about 2 μm. Besides, a high whispering gallery mode (WGM) quality factor that up to 107 was realized by using this microbubble-based resonator. To explain the upper phenomenon, the microbubble was modeled and simulated with the ANSYS software. Results of this study could be useful for developing new single-ended whispering gallery mode micro-cavity structure, pressure sensors, etc.

Abstract (sommario):
A novel broad tunable bandwidth and narrow instantaneous line-width linear swept laser source using combined tunable filters working at 1,300 nm center wavelength is proposed. The combined filters consist of a fiber Fabry–Perot tunable filter and a tunable filter based on diffractive grating with scanning polygon mirror. In contrast to traditional method using single tunable filter, the trade-off between bandwidth and instantaneous line-width is alleviated. Parallel implementation of two semiconductor optical amplifiers with different wavelength range is adopted in the laser resonator for broadband light amplification. The Fourier domain mode locking swept laser source with combined tunable filters offers broadband tunable range with narrow instantaneous line-width, which is especially benefiting for high-quality optical frequency domain imaging. The proposed Fourier domain mode locking swept laser source provides a tuning range of 160 nm with instantaneous line-width of about 0.01 nm at sweeping rate of 15 kHz, a finesse of 16,000 is thus achieved.

Abstract (sommario):
The design and usage of the addressed combined fiber-optic sensors (ACFOSs) and the multisensory control systems of the greenhouse gas concentration on their basis are investigated herein. The main development trend of the combined fiber-optic sensors (CFOSs), which consists of the fiber Bragg grating (FBG) and the Fabry–Perot resonator (FPR), which are successively formed at the optical fiber end, is highlighted. The use of the addressed fiber Bragg structures (AFBSs) instead of the FBG in the CFOSs not only leads to the significant cheapening of the sensor system due to microwave photonics interrogating methods, but also increasing its metrological characteristics. The structural scheme of the multisensory gas concentration monitoring system is suggested. The suggested scheme allows detecting four types of greenhouse gases (CO2, NO2, CH4 and Ox) depending on the material and thickness of the polymer film, which is the FPR sensitive element. The usage of the Karhunen–Loève transform (KLT), which allows separating each component contribution to the reflected spectrum according to its efficiency, is proposed. In the future, this allows determining the gas concentration at the AFBS address frequencies. The estimations show that the ACFOS design in the multisensory system allows measuring the environment temperature in the range of −60…+300 °C with an accuracy of 0.1–0.01 °C, and the gas concentration in the range of 10…90% with an accuracy of 0.1–0.5%.
