Abstract (sommario):
This study is presented to: address principles, rules and application of Feng Shui theory for placement of man-made structures including planting trees, color, landform, water flows, etc.; introduce the basic information of Feng Shui theory; and research the background philosophy of them. Various basic principles of Feng Shui are introduced with figures and explanations. Basic vocabularies of Feng Shui are identified to apply landscape design concepts. Research on the Foundations of Feng Shui theory is conducted to interpret each relevant Feng Shui rule to connect it to Chi theory. Feng Shui principles based on Chi theory are deduced to apply to landscape design. Various patterns of location, place arrangement and orientation of structures are introduced as examples based on Feng Shui as a landscape design reference. The deduced Feng Shui principles are applied to analyze the site of these residential housing case studies.

Summary: This research proposes a new site analysis methodology in the form of an integrated framework. The framework separates the site analysis process into different models, incorporates each model, and considers the interaction between them. The most important models are the environmental models (climate, geology, hydrology, topography, and vegetation models), social-cultural models, economic models, and infrastructure models. Each model also contains several important factors. The study identifies and organizes environmental factors within the framework that influence site analysis and design. Based on the applicability of feng shui principles and their interpretations into measurable factors, this research compares and incorporates feng shui and contemporary environmental design theories, and summarizes essential environmental factors. The emphasis on environmental factors from these models may lead to a better understanding of the relationships between humankind and the natural environment.

Hwangbo, Bong. "In search of alternative traditions in architecture". Thesis, University of Sheffield, 2000. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/14460/.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
This thesis was undertaken to unravel hitherto unattended histories of the built environment with particular reference to traditional East Asian architecture and the German organic tradition in the Modern Movement in 1920s Europe. The thesis paid attention to an unclassifiable discipline of feng shui with respect to architecture and urbanism within the intellectual tradition of East Asia. The thesis has elucidated that feng shui can properly be considered neither an art nor a science from the Western epistemological viewpoint, but a melange of arts and sciences which governs diverse human interests inclusive of architecture and urbanism, and is also the vehicle to embody an ancient cosmology. As opposed to the East Asian paradigm in architecture, the thesis intended to reveal a historical meaning of modern traditions in architecture in its emerging period, examining exactly how the dynamic forces of modern architecture could thread into Western modernism in general. The Puginian Gothic Revival and the Instrumentalism of J. N. L. Durand are considered as emerging currents of the Modern Movement in architecture: an attitude still subscribing to a transcendental mode of existence, as against an opposing current which takes scientific rationality as its ultimate virtue. Two opposing yet complementary tendencies within the Modern Movement are thus recognised; Geometric versus Organic. The significant intellectual enterprise of organic architects, such as Theodor Fischer, Hugo Häring and Hans Scharoun, often mistakenly viewed as Expressionism, is studied in particular. The German organic tradition is further compared with the work of Frank Lloyd Wright whose concept of organic architecture included a keen interest in Japanese art and architecture, especially in art printing. In response to the call for alternative traditions in architecture, this thesis suggests that a paradigm beyond modern science and Orientalism is needed for the synthesis of East and West and of old and new.

Abstract (sommario):
Thesis discusses natural houses which are supposed to be part of our lives in the future. These houses may be for someone and they might prefer smarter building with non-recyclable materials when choosing a new housing. But it is necessary to think about our future and sustainable development. We also need to tell ourselves what is really a priority for our planet. There comes a time when they will prefer building materials which can be used somehow after some time or be recycled. This is related to the design of the garden. It is designed to fulfil an ornamental, economic and social function. The garden is an integral part of each house, therefore it is important for each element used to be creating the garden as a linked harmonious whole. The study deals with the concept of a natural houses home in accordance with the maximum use of the garden.

The emphasis on environmental factors from these models may lead to a better understanding of the relationships between humankind and the natural environment. The proposed framework is implemented into a computer simulation program, titled SiteOne, to demonstrate the concepts and ideas, with an emphasis on environmental factors. This research uses the town of Reston in Fairfax County, Virginia, as the study area because of the availability of information. SiteOne analyzes a range of alternatives and then derives solutions from the suggested site conditions in the form of GIS maps. There are various modules that make up the prototype system: namely an analysis module, a database module, and a result generation module. SiteOne helps professionals collect a wide range of information and select corresponding criteria in the early stages of design. It also provides visual analysis based on selected criteria and models. Therefore, it can act as an educational knowledge component for professionals as well as the general public.

Lynch, Erin S. "Feng Shui as a site design tool: Assessing conditions of human comfort in urban places". Thesis, The University of Arizona, 2003. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/292072.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Feng Shui as a site design tool seeks a different spectrum of criteria in the observation and assessment of a site than that of contemporary site design. It is a method based on the understanding and observation of the energetic conditions within and surrounding a site. Energetic conditions are perceptible. It requires an additional level of awareness to be able to identify what it is that causes a space to feel the way it does. Feng Shui may provide the additional level of consideration that when incorporated in the design process, facilitates spaces that may more effectively fulfill their purpose and feel good to the people using them. This study assessed a variety of existing urban places in Tucson, Phoenix, Scottsdale, Tempe, and Sedona, AZ. for conditions of human comfort based on (1) Feng Shui principles, and (2) contemporary site design recommendations. Current research on the topic of Feng Shui is limited to its application in land planning. This qualitative study applied the principles of Feng Shui as criteria in the evaluation of urban spaces. Results of the study indicate that well designed places from a Feng Shui standpoint were also perceived as well designed from a contemporary site design vantage. The outcome suggests the value of incorporating Feng Shui as a tool in the site design process used by Western designers.

Feng Shui is an important experience and a kind of the wisdom accumulated by humans in their observation of the environment and their living experience. For a long time, it has always been an important factor affecting Chinese people’s housing purchase decisions. The external environment, house pattern, and resident's Bazi chart are considered in multiple criteria decision making to assure that the conditions of the environment and housing are compatible with resident's Bazi chart and benefit resident. This study was conducted through literature analysis and expert interviews to sort out the main aspects and important evaluation indicators, and then an expert questionnaire survey was conducted. Finally, the important Feng Shui factors to be considered when buying a house were obtained using analytic network process. The proposed Feng Shui factors can give home buyers more appropriate considerations when making decisions, and can provide developers with better planning directions for development and construction.

Everybody whishes to have his/her own dream house. There are some interior design software that can help us to visualize the results. Through the help of Feng-Shui theory, the best interior design can improve the resident’s health and furtune. However, it is not the case that when the users use all such software takes Feng-Shui into consideration. Moreover, as most people are not familiar with Feng-Shui theory and method, we create an “Automatic Feng-Shui Aware Interior Design System”. In this paper, we propose a system that can create a Feng-Shui aware interior decoration system according to resident’s preference. The user inputs the layout of a house , his/her gender and birth year. Our system divides the house space through user-defined bin unit, to obtain a set of rectangular bins. We choose the best location to place the furniture according to the Feng-Shui rule, where each bin is associated with different Feng-Shui cots. Our system uses a recursive algorithm to find the minimum cost of furniture placement. If a user is not satisfied with the result, he/she can manually modify the location or the direction any furniture. As a result, the user can use our system to create his/she dream house.

Feng-shui is closely related to various natural environments and landscapes; Cao Yong-sheng (2005) indicated that other than emphasizing on beatification of gardens during the ancient times of Chinese, the Feng-shui of a garden was also valued, and it was believed that the arrangement and combination of the garden architecture, flowers & plants and artificial landscapes must conform to the demands of Feng-shui. This article probes the application of plants and Feng-shui, including the Five Elements, the position of the Trigrams, the theory of attracting auspiciousness and expelling bad lucks, which is complemented with review of literatures, experts’ interviews and actual cases to understand the various Feng-shui positioning approaches of plants and houses. The outcome of the research indicated that Pine trees(Pinaceae) are suitable to be planted on the East outside of the house; Ginkgo trees(Ginkgo biloba) are suitable to be planted on the West; Cherry Blossoms(Prunus) on the South, and Buddhist Pines(Podocarpus macrophyllus) on the North. Zanzibar Gems(Zamioculcas zamiifolia) are suitable for hallway inside a house, Moth Orchid(Phalaenopsis) for living room, Mint(Mentha) for study room, yellow Carnations(Dianthus caryophyllus) for dining room, Lavenders(Lavandula) for kitchen, Rosemary(Rosmarinus officinalis) for bathroom, and Narcissus(Narcissus tazetta var. chinensis) for passages. The outcomes are organized to establish a set of Feng-shui positioning rules for plants both inside and outside of the house, so as to offer reference for the gardening, architecture and landscape fields.

Theories of Geomancy & Feng Shui are the cumulative life experiences of ancient Chinese; they have long history and are part of important traditional customs. They are profound eastern philosophy, including thinking model with in-depth and precise system. They are based on I Ching’s “harmony between man and nature” as the core, and emphasize the harmony between human beings and nature. Theories of geomancy & Feng Shui, such as Ying Yang & the Five Elements, Eight Trigrams and concepts, imply the techniques and methods of system operation, including the rich and complicated thoughts of China, in the past 5000 years. Thus, for buildings in Taiwan, geomancy & Feng Shui are applied in arrangement of villages, construction of cities, site selection, planning, design and even the construction of Ying and Yang houses, which can be demonstrated by the existing old cities and towns, old buildings, tombs and private housing. Thus, geomancy & Feng Shui, in fact, are the general natural science combining architecture, geography, meteorology, ecology, environment, and even aesthetics and psychology. This study explores the relationship between geomancy & Feng Shui and profits and fortune of enterprises and individuals. By literature review, data collection, case study and interview, this study clarifies the superstition and myth of geomancy & Feng Shui in the past. It also generalizes the arrangement and technique for fortune in geomancy & Feng Shui, and constructs the operational principles to combine geomancy & Feng Shui with modern architecture in order to establish academic model of modern Feng Shui, and develop modern application by ancient techniques. The findings can serve as references for enterprises and individuals to select sites and directions of buildings of Ying and Yang houses.

From ancient times to present, Feng Shui plays a very important and key role, and it affects the strategic thoughts and behavioral model of people. In Taiwan, many interior designers get some troubles because of the Feng Shui issues, and those are very realistic and have to be solved. Especially for the Kitchen design, it has lots of Feng Shui taboos. This research is based on the Feng Shui books, which gathering from 10 Feng Shui experts. There are 60 taboos refer to design a house. Analyzing those dates, it founds out that there are 38 taboos are regarded to kitchen design, which receives 63.3% of all taboos. More than two experts indicate that the taboo in the kitchen includes 22 items with 36.7% in total. This study analyzed 22 Feng Shui taboos by the case studies of kitchen design in Taiwan and abroad, and it found out: 1. In Taiwan, interior designers tried to avoid Feng Shui taboos when designing kitchens. 2. In abroad, interior designers seem not really concern about the Feng Shui taboos. At the same time, this research collects 6 Feng Shui taboos, which identified from more than 5 out of 10 Feng Shui experts, as (1) There should not have beam over the gas stove. (2) The sink should not next to the gas stove. (3) The refrigerator should not opposite to the gas stove. (4) The sink should not opposite to the gas stove. (5) The gas stove should not opposite to the kitchen door. (6) The gas stove should not on the drainage. Those 6 kitchen Feng Shui taboos are important references for future kitchen designs.

This thesis is aimed to discuss the significantly intimate relationships between Feng-Shui and architecture as well as Feng-Shui and interior design. In addition, theories concerning triple-saver door are also used to discuss its tremendous impact of Feng-Shui on interior design. So far as the Chinese are concerned, Feng-Shui is a set of professional theories with a long history, originating from our ancestors that make close and subtle observations on the geographic environment, inclusive of mountains, hills, lands, lakes, seasonal variations, and the like. Our ancestors eventually discover that significantly intimate relationships do exist between the natural environment, human beings and other creatures alike. Moreover, they also make significant discoveries that human beings are able to proliferate in an advantageous way by finding out appropriate environmental spaces as well as sites or locations. In this light, Feng-Shui is also called “Skills to observe lands,” meaning using various ways to observe geographical variations and predicting natural phenomena and , as a result, meant as scientific methods and practical principles to select palaces, temples, villages and graveyards. In brief, Feng-Shui is a kind of scientific knowledge to select appropriate sites or locations for particular reasons; to put it differently, Feng-Shui is essentially and basically a method to discover environmental and geographical traits for particular sites and purposes. On account of the rapid development and advancement of broadcasting technology, such concepts regarding Feng-Shiu have been gradually accepted as pressure beams, door red, road red, wall knife, evil hallway, door to door, rooms of rooms, stairs confronting doors and doors confronting kitchens. The above concepts are basic notions of Feng-Shui and thus have exerted a tremendous and indispensable influence on residential spaces or sites of human beings. By interviewing Kongzhao Min, who possesses valuable experiences and reliable practices of almost five hundred cases of Feng-Shui, significant findings are made as follows: behavior modes of mankind and his / her living qualities are intimately connected with environmental spaces of residency, including interior surroundings and exterior ones. In this regard, Feng-Shui is briefly defined as environmental spaces concretely embodied with human choices of residency. This thesis starts with studying and exploring ancient books with respect to the origin of Feng-Shui, its shapes of theories, its professional publications and finally professional realizations of Feng-Shui practices in selecting residency. Significant observations are made that Feng-Shui is identical with the environmental spaces, and vice versa. Furthermore, the definitions of modern environmental spaces and those of Guo Pu’s described in detail in his books are surprisingly identical. Chi or air scatters as winds rise and stops as waters gather. Our ancestors try hard to gather Chi and live in harmony with it, which is called Feng-Shui afterwards. Vapor from the atmospherical humidity and rain is sufficiently accumulated in soils, which evaporates and subsequently releases water. Breezes blow the vapor high up and take it down into ponds, rivers, seas, and oceans. The vapor rising from soils meet with vapor in the air, evaporate in the winds and then stop by the water side, which is not merely a natural phenomenon but also a concrete practice of Feng-Shui. In order to concretely demonstrate Feng-Shui practices, Feng-Shui should be discussed in the framework of the natural environment. Taboos with regard to Feng-Shui should also be based on the environmental structure. With the prevailing notions and practices of Feng-Shui, the living residency of human beings are apparently in harmony with the environmental spaces. Currently, poor or inappropriate interior designs decrease in numbers. However, one problem is still worth note; that is to say, complaints about one’s living residency or spaces derive not from poor interior designs but from confronting against the environmental spaces. In real cases of practicing Feng-Shui, some people living in identical interior designs suffer from different but severe problems of illness and emotions. The reason is that the environmental spaces and qualities they reside in are wholly poor and don’t correspond to proper human residency. Feng-Shui is not merely a knowledge of science or an art of spatial exploration; it is also an environmental ecology of mankind. Human beings are enormously affected by Feng-Shui. Feng-Shui, therefore, is essentially an art pursuing and practicing harmony between mankind and the natural environment.

Feng-Shui folklore has often been found in Tainan. One may trace its historical background back to the time of Cheng Cheng-kung in the Ming Dynasty. Even in our time, new Feng-Shui folklore continues to appears. Why is Feng-Shui folklore remembered, retold and spread? What is the psychology, as well as the values and ideas, of the common people behind Feng-Shui folklore? These are the questions to be answered in this study. The Feng-Shui folklore in Tainan is not seen as an isolated phenomenon of culture. The belief in Feng-Shui is transplanted to Taiwan with immigrants. After rooting in Tainan, it has a close relation with the daily life of people and the development of villages. Therefore, Feng-Shui folklore carries with and express in it the sentiments of the local inhabitants. The Feng-Shui folklore in Tainan is regarded as the representation of collected consciousness and collected memory of the people. In this study, I deal with the "people" first. By investigating the folklore collected through field survey, I seek for the deeper layers of meanings in the “Officer Chiang's Deterioration of Tainan's Feng-Shui.” Secondly, I discuss the "things," interpreting why the Chia-nan Dam, constructed during the reign of Japan, has become the cause of bad Feng-Shui. Thirdly, I direct my attention to the aspect of "time," discussing the influences of the “Tainan Lung-chu” in the Ching Dynasty. Then I discuss how gods, ghosts and living people can reside peacefully in the place favoured by Feng-Su. Moreover, I examine how the “Yeng-sheng Wu” can be employed by people to guard their hometowns, to evade evils, and even to prevail at strife. Lastly, a comprehensive study is given to the various relationships between the residence of the living and the residence of the dead. The Feng-Shui folklore in Tainan changes during the course of time. New Feng-Shui folklore requires the refinement of people's collected sentiments to spread. Old Feng-Shui folklore, on the other hand, needs the examination from the local perspective in order to reveal more layers of meanings.

The study exclusively includes the collection of Feng-Shui folklore in Taiwan society, and catalogs the folk stories basing on the plots, deeply investigating the contents, which reflect the Feng-Shui culture inside Taiwanese people, trying to explain what kind of effect of these stories may have to the life style and traditional customs, and expecting through this kind of model analysis, we can convey the value of life and culture conceptions of Taiwanese . The usage of research documents is mainly based on the documents of the culture bureau of the countries in Taiwan and the stories studied by the researchers as well as the data of the period of Japanese colony to be as the reference sources. To begin with, the stories which we study include the concepts of Feng-Shui and its manipulation methods, emphasizing the impact of Feng-Shui, On the other hand, about the house, the geological environment of the village, the temples’ location of village, the private architectures’ effects on people’s ups and downs, last but not least, on the aspect of tomb, which have a profound influence on offspring’s fate that local people believe is true are all carefully analyzed and explored . My study method is to collect the folklore anthology published by the counties and the documents of Japanese colony period and the related local journals, from which we try to figure out the connections between the related folks and to sort out the stories base on their original location, and explore the contents of the classified stories to make a deep discussion. Through the conception and theorem of folklore, anthropology, psychology and religions, we try to analyze and understand the desires and thoughts, displayed by the folk customs, which deep inside the common people,. The catalog and arrangement of the folklore in the chapter Two, that is cataloged by the concept of the “motif”of the folk-tale, by this assumption we develop the “motif” model of the Feng-Shui folklore. From these plots, we try to discuss the social background and the value of culture behind the stories. In the Chapter Three, by the methodology and theorem of the traditional Chinese cosmology, religion and cultural anthropology, we would like to inspect if this kind of story through different levels of the inductance between man and nature, ancestor worship or the destiny aspect, which try to convey the concept of the pursuit of the “ harmony and balance” and the “sacred space”. Last, from the above discussion, the Taiwan Feng-Shui folklore is not only full of diversity and abundance, but also is the total life memory collection of the village residents. Our ancestors use the concept of the Feng-Shui to express the surroundings, and even through this concept to transmit the sense of morality, the cosmic view to form the social regulations, thereby influencing the common people’s daily life behaviors and their living surroundings.

Feng-Shui has been used by emperors and the public alike for thousands of years and is still very popular nowadays. If it’s a superstition, why do lots of businessmen try to ask Feng-Shui masters for help when they are looking for new ideal business sites or facing some trouble? Although Feng-Shui has not been scientifically proven, its theory is similar to magnetic field theory in science. Based on documentary analysis, this research tried to look for the Wealth Elements of Mansion Feng-Shui through collecting, summarizing, and analyzing data, and identified some Wealth Elements such as Orientation and Qi. Observing five Mansion Feng-Shui cases, this study used observation method to validate these Wealth Elements identified, and provided some suggestions for improvement. The Wealth Elements are relevant to the orientation and position of the mansion door and how much Qi could go through it, which was validated by case study and agreed with the elements identified by document analysis. It is hoped that the results of this study could have considerable impact to businessmen, future startup people and those who are interested in Mansion Feng-Shui.

Geomancy is a traditional Chinese construction theory, which contains tremendous accumulated statistics of life experiences and studies of the details of empirical handlings and therefore makes itself a complete concept of construction. However, under the current environment of modernized society, geomancy seems to lack something in adapting itself to the new age. The evolution of city structure and dramatic changes in the forms of dwelling house have given the media and various kinds of geomancy factions an opportunity to manipulate it and consequently resulted in lots of theoretical gaps, obscurity, superficial expressions of formality and symbols, and ended up with passive construction and space reviews. Meanwhile, the world has shown quite different attitude towards the value judgment on geomancy by paying more attention to Chinese culture, bringing them into the spotlight and coating it with a shinny color. However, if you observe the phenomena in detail, you would find that it was merely viewed as a cultural relic, respected, and passed onto generations as a belief and customs, which reveals the fact that oriental world is still under the dominance of the western application science. The points of this research lie in finding out and accumulating the practicality of geomancy, enhancing its reference value, trying to reverse the role it has been playing (being passive and commented on),bringing it back to its origin as an instructor in construction space ,then one by one verifying the belief and science hidden in geomancy, and then embodying the major concept of this system stage by stage, in which architecture plays a rather important auxiliary role and it’s also one of the purposes of the experiment held in the research. The research was divided into several stages. First, starting from the essential processes in traditional construction, we clarified the geomancy specialist’s corresponding tasks in terms of traditional construction, so that the necessary items of the geomancy construction processes could be obtained. At the same time, due to the existence of various geomancy factions, related geomancy studies were also conducted to get a comprehensive understanding of geomancy, among which the theories of “Ba-Zhai position, Magic Square and Five elements” were the major concepts studied since they were more representative and of profound theoretical base; secondly, transformation experiment was the major part of this research. Based on the foregoing, the focus of the experiment was then specified by conducting experiments such as “Experiment on Geomancy-Dwelling Match”, “Experiment on Collective Dwelling Internal Arrangement”, “Experiment on Internal Arrangement”, “Experiment on Different Internal Arrangement Combination”, and “the Transforming of the Geomantic Design Guidance”, in the hope that the design method of the modern geomantic architecture could be successfully constructed; thirdly, based on the constructed guidance mentioned earlier, the design of the dwelling was then put into practice, in addition to the standard layouts set in all directions, the result of the “test design of the environment conditions” was also set beforehand, such as the re-design of certain projects. Then, we also brought up a model example of geomantic architecture for guidance reference, which focused mainly on the dwelling space with the architecture of the public areas as a secondary focus, and with original layout model micro-viewed and the structure of the space macro-viewed.

Looking at the trail of historical and cultural development, Feng-Shui is another name of pursuing an ideal environment for Chinese people. From a modern perspective, however, Feng-Shui is an activity of selecting an ideal environment for living, for anybody, without cultural restrictions. The essence of Feng-Shui lies within the concept of treating people as a part of nature and that both co-exist in a symbiotic relationship. The basic orientation of Feng-Shui theory specifically focuses on the interaction between people and the environment. Everything in the universe exhibits a hierarchical structure under various influences in nature. Regarding the relationship between people and nature, it is deemed that people evolved from nature and hence became a part of nature, which cannot be simply subdivided into either subjective or objective perspectives. The theory depicts that people shall bond with nature and become a life community. In the natural organic perspective of Feng-Shui, there is harmony between people and the earth, as well as respect for the ecological environment. This has attracted extensive attention and positive acknowledgement under the progressive environmental deterioration we are witnessing nowadays. The various regulations of good, bad, suitability and forbiddance in Feng-Shui are mainly provided to reduce human damage to the ecological environment and furthermore, to achieve the objective of “sustainable survival”. Feng-Shui provides the positive meaning of rooting ancient culture in people’s minds and providing an irreplaceable definition of cultural ecology. The philosophy emphasizes mutual coordination between the building space of people’s daily living and the surrounding nature, which constitutes the basic theory of Chinese Feng-Shui. The natural organic perspective of the earth as an entity is not only the core thought of Feng-Shui theory, but also the essence of traditional oriental philosophy. Although Feng-Shui receives both praise and criticism in regard to its historical reputation, when it comes to academic studies, we shall adopt the useful strengths of an organic earth, eliminate the weakness of considering mysteries which are inappropriate to modern times and discuss the matter of health with the penetrating vision of microscopes; the results of such a study would prove beneficial to human society. Whereas the modern green buildings emphasize the earth as the main component, the review on relationships between people, building and environment demonstrates that the natural organic perspective of Feng-Shui offers the best model. The core value of Feng-Shui does not damage the profound definition due to impact of time; instead, it offers the natural organic perspective to all of mankind in the modern days of technology and civilization.

Abstract In traditional architectural culture and setting of living environment, ancient people do the environment evaluation depending on the accumulation and distribution of pass experience then start the construction. Accompanied with the merging of different cultures, the unique concept of “Feng Shui” is gradually developed under the accumulated living experience. At the same time, these concepts transform the enrich connotation and structures of traditional architectural culture. Therefore in the practice of the space setting in ancient architectures, we do need to study not only the building techniques but also the appearance of outlook style and connotation of inner space arrangement that is the foundation of the spirits of ancient architectures. Among the documents related to ancient architectures, it is rare to see the concepts of the constitution and mental evaluation of Feng Shui are applied. The reason might be the theory of ancient architecture is formed much earlier with highly mature performance on outlook forms and styles of the buildings. Therefore, while ancient architect is designing the blue print of the building, he just needs to follow “his master’s ways” to set up dimension figures accompanied with the social status of the owner and followed present social regulations, then he can build a fit building. This is a so-call ”building mode” in the behavior in traditional architectural culture constructed by the taboos and stated or oral regulations of folk’s culture. However, when we look into the mental works in pre-construct stage, ancient architects are looking for a balance and harmony between the building and the environment by not stepping over the barrier and get hurt. Knowing the fearfulness of the power of the Mother Nature, ancient people cautiously deal with it. This causes “Feng Shui” becomes the ultimate instructions and principles of evaluating the environment while designing and setting space no matter of city, town, government building, civilian house, tomb and garden. From the above, we can understand while studying the protection and maintenance (or its extension) of the ancient architectures, there are two aspects, “social aspect” and “environmental aspect” that need to be discussed. What the view of life “referring to” the metaphor of the existing in the ancient architecture field is the “post-assumption” behavior and inner spiritual thoughts of the ancients on house space arrangement. In the time of “current user using the ancient architecture” on the purpose of “maintained construction”, the main “interests” are seeking the original constitution of the pre-constructed ideas of the ancients by studying how we can apply their ideas of “Feng-Shui” to the layout of modern living environment and how we can enhance the accuracy of the construction plan for ancient architectures on the aspects of “archeology” and “maintenance”.
