This mastership dissertation aims to analyse the material and symbolic contidions that lead organized groups of feminist women to institutionalisation in the scope of the State and/or governments in 1970´s and 1980´s Brazil. We adopted as basis the understanding of feminism as a praxis and a critical thinking - it is a political praxis and a thought with its ideas, theories and political positions - which criticizes the disposition the world is organized (ÁVILA, 2013). We maintain that the brazilian feminist movement not only proposed, created, idealized organisms, services and public equipament. It went slowly within the three levels of government, from the 1980´s on, becoming a main participant and executing, the movement itself, the public policies. Methodology - this is a study of qualitative basis, in which six semi-structured interviews have been carried through with feminist women: a) That have experienced the first moments of government institutionalisation; b) That took part in governments (or that deffended that feminists should take part on the governments); feminists that were against their participation but later took part in governments. The initial characterization of the problem is held on the conceptual mark of gender that dialogues with feminists theorists and that is organized in three axis, namely: 1) the concept of patriarchate; 2) the system sex-gender and, 3) the concept of State feminism. As methodology of analysis we were inspired by Laurence Bardin´s (2000) technique of analysis of the thematic-categorial content. Results - Conscisely, the analysis of the material indicates that the creation of the council for women´s rights has inaugurated the institutionalised relationship between the feminist movement and the State; that feminism is influencing transformations in the State institutions, although it is still the context of a patriarchal State.

Abstract (sommario):
What is it about feminism that invites so many different opinions on what ‘counts’ and what doesn’t? People from vastly different cultural situations variously categorise feminist practices as extreme, radical, reactionary, unbalanced, co-opted, revolutionary, elite, exclusive, progressive, passé, and hysterical. The desire of both feminists and anti-feminists to control feminism emerges as the limiting of what feminism is, whom it is for, and where it is going. The urge to limit feminism seems, in some cases, to overtake the urge to spread the word and celebrate feminism’s successes. And it is not just anti-feminists who attempt to limit feminism – even feminists spend an inordinate amount of time defining certain practices out of the feminist spectrum. In this thesis, I document and analyse the way we limit feminism – its participants, meaning, practices, language, history, and future. I explore the reasons why we need to contain feminism in this way, looking in particular at those who have an investment in keeping feminism comfortably small. I invite back into the realm of feminism a wide range of activities and theories we generally invalidate as feminism, including the words of several ‘unofficial’ feminists I interviewed for this project. In essence, this project goes towards the rethinking of the term ‘feminism’ by examining the widely differing and often contradictory definitions of ‘what counts.’

Abstract (sommario):
In this study, possibility of establishing feminist solidarity, sustained and based on feminist politics in Turkey is examined. Commonality discourse, the notion of sisterhood and identity politics, creating illusionary homogeneity are criticized of being exclusionary and limiting. Contemporary accounts of feminist solidarity are investigated in order to find a way out for establishing solidarity across difference. However, it is seen that these contemporary approaches are far from designating a driving force to stimulate feminists / activists to come together. It is argued that in order to achieve feminist solidarity respecting differences is a must. It is also argued that solidarity has to become a powerful relation among feminists and to do so internalized inequalities and power holding within activism has to be interrogated. Consciousness raising among activists is offered as a means to overcome challenges to activism and barriers to solidarity. Furthermore it is argued that feminism has to become the motto of activism and feminist politics as the basis for establishing feminist solidarity.

Abstract (sommario):
There is a problem with western patriarchal capitalist narratives of love and connected models of subjectivity which some feminisms, in particular, neoliberal (post)feminism, continue rather than criticise. This is a problem, not only because these feminisms uphold existing patriarchal structures and values, but because models of patriarchal subjectivity are founded on a repression and devaluation of love that contributes to what I am naming a ‘crisis of love’ in neoliberal societies. While some solutions to this problem have been offered, including by feminist love studies scholars, none of the solutions address the whole issue – for example, feminisms that ignore issues of spirituality and the female subject’s relationship to the divine, and the impact of myth on the psyche. Until these aspects are included in a rethinking of both female subjectivity and narratives of love, the problem will not be solved. There are many kinds of love but Eros in particular, which is such a charged narrative in western patriarchal capitalist society, is the kind of love that most urgently needs to be rethought and re(dis)covered. Through examination of the major founding myth of female subjectivity for western patriarchy – the Madonna/whore binary – a pathway to addressing this problem of love becomes possible. Rethinking this binary according to reinterpretations of the myths of Aphrodite and Demeter offers a rethinking of Eros as a creative, life-affirming power. This renewed narrative of Eros creates new models of female subjectivity – and the potentiality for new models of ethics – that challenge the contemporary neoliberal paradigm.

Abstract (sommario):
This work discusses the consequences of the Brazilian feminist movement in the Brazilian feminist press. Based on specialized literature in Brazilian feminism and on field research, it shows that the feminist press after-1974 can be divided in two different moments: first and second generations. The first is mainly worried with social class questions and social differences, and the second is mainly focused on genre questions. Two historical events mark the division between the first and the second generation of feminist periodicals: the II and the III São Paulo State Woman Congress, that happened, respectively, in 1980 and 1981.

Abstract (sommario):

Abstract (sommario):
This dissertation examines the conventions used to frame and represent sweatshops in and to the U.S. Employing qualitative research methods this dissertation examines U.S. anti-sweatshop discourse, analyzing how the sweatshop and the sweatshop worker are made into exceptional objects of inquiry, and considers what kinds of truths and subjects are garnered from them. This dissertation argues that U.S. anti-sweatshop discourse frames sweatshops as an inherently foreign problem, and that this framing contributes to U.S. exceptionalism and savior ideology. This framing positions U.S. subjects as the primary agents of change whose relation to sweatshops is crucial to their eradication, and renders causal blame upon the racialized poor within the U.S. I argue that this framing undergirds the proliferation of new ethical markets that reproduce dislocation, dispossession, and displacement within U.S. borders via retail gentrification. Ultimately, this dissertation asks what truths are made possible through a mobilizing discourse whose foundational premise is contingent on the imagery of the sweatshop and the sweatshop worker.

Abstract (sommario):
Postfeminism could be considered an ongoing development in the history of feminism. Alternatively, it can be seen as a form of antifeminism or faux feminism. The following thesis is a reaction against the postfeminist sentiment which argues that feminism is an ideology of the past, or in need of significant reconfiguration. Rather, I argue that feminism continues to be an exciting movement capable of bettering the lives of Australian women. Feminism is an emancipatory ideology which seeks to free women from patriarchy by employing strategies such as protest and consciousness raising. Feminist activism has brought many changes to women’s lives, including woman suffrage, workplace reform, and the institution of equal opportunity and anti-discrimination legislature. Such achievements show that feminism is worthwhile, despite the criticism of authors such as Naomi Wolf, Christina Hoff Sommers, and Camile Paglia who suggest that today’s feminism ought to move in a different direction from that of the Second Wave. However, women continue to experience injustices similar to those identified by feminists of the 70s, such as the existence of informal barriers which negatively impact women’s political participation, the lack of women in decision making positions in business, and the physical violence that women are subjected to. Modern day women ought to embrace feminism and seek to achieve the goals such as those laid out by Aune and Redfern in Reclaiming the F-Word: The New Feminist Movement – liberating women’s bodies; ending violence against women; transforming politics and work; and reclaiming feminism.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
The purpose of this dissertation is to reflect on the meaning of feminism in order to decide whether the movement needs a rebranding. The first part will focus on the history of feminism to clarify its beliefs and goals. The following part will highlight how feminism gained a bad reputation over time and will show Elle’s attempt in November 2013 to launch a project to rebrand the movement. The last part will explain what present-day feminism consists of by listing some of the latest projects and the most important issues the movement has to tackle. My analysis will finally show that the F-movement needs a rebranding and, in order to be effective, men should join women’s fight for equality. “We should all be feminists”.

McFadden, Caroline. "Critical white feminism interrogating privilege, whiteness, and antiracism in feminist theory". Honors in the Major Thesis, University of Central Florida, 2011. http://digital.library.ucf.edu/cdm/ref/collection/ETH/id/472.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
It is vital that feminist theory and critical white studies be combined in order to form what I call critical white feminism. Both critical white studies and feminist studies are often limited in their ability to adequately address the complex interconnectivity of racial and gender privilege and oppression. In general, feminist scholarship produced by white feminists excludes and oppresses women of color and is therefore inadequate. I refer to this problem as white feminist racism and argue that white feminists are ignorant of the ways in which whiteness and privilege facilitate problematic theorizing. Unlike white feminist theories, the emerging field of critical white studies provides a foundation for exploring whiteness in a racist society. However, critical white theories often examine racism and whiteness without attention to gender, and are therefore inadequate, as well. Consequently, another approach is necessary for the development of liberatory theories that sufficiently conceptualize social change. As a solution to the limitations of both feminist studies and critical white studies, I propose critical white feminism, which encourages white feminists to interrogate whiteness and privilege. The purpose of critical white feminism is to a) conceptualize an inclusive and transformative antiracist feminist framework and agenda, b) challenge white feminist racism and white feminist hegemony, c) encourage open and honest communication between feminists across differences, and d) facilitate feminist solidarity and mobilization.

Jonsson, Terese. "White feminist stories : locating race in the narratives of British feminism". Thesis, London Metropolitan University, 2015. http://repository.londonmet.ac.uk/959/.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
This thesis examines dominant feminist discourses emerging from liberal media, the academy, and activist networks in contemporary Britain. In particular, it traces stories and representations of feminism’s recent past (from the 1960s onwards) which are constructed and reproduced through these sites, analysing where and how issues related to race and racism are located within - and outside of - such narratives. It is based on empirical research analysing popular, academic, and activist books, newspaper articles in The Guardian and The Observer, as well as interviews with feminist activists and students of women’s and gender studies courses. Given that there is an extensive history of women of colour-led organising in post-war Britain, including an autonomous black women’s movement in the 1970s and ’80s, and the growth at this time of black British feminism both within and outside of the academy, the thesis interrogates dominant narratives which continue to construct British feminism as a story belonging to white women. Drawing on black and postcolonial feminist theory, it analyses the articulations of feminist politics emerging from these sites through an anti-racist lens. It demonstrates that the way the historical narratives are constructed and gain currency has a significant influence on contemporary feminist theory and politics, with whiteness reproduced as the hegemonic lens through which British feminism is understood. The thesis argues that white feminist racism haunts the dominant narrative of British feminism – as something which is repeatedly erased or evaded each time it is brought to view – and it calls for white feminist academics and activists to reckon with the long history of racism and imperialism which has been integral to the British feminist project since its inception.

Wang, Bin. "Chinese Feminism: A History of the Present". Thesis, The University of Sydney, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/2123/17730.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
This thesis’ subtitle, “a history of the present,” has been chosen to highlight the purposes of my research on Chinese feminism. First, I aim to give a close account of the development of contemporary Chinese feminism in media and popular culture, in academia, in student societies, and in social organizations. Second, by exploring the history and historiography of pre-2000 Chinese feminism, I aim to unravel how politics has impinged upon the writing of this history and how feminist history in China might practically engage with the past to articulate politics in the present. The first part of this thesis traces the emergence of Chinese feminism in various ways, considering the impact of publications like Women’s Bell in the early twentieth century, and discussing how different voices, such as anarcho-feminism and “traditional” feminism, were marginalized by late Qing and May Fourth “liberal” feminisms bound up with a male-centered nationalism. From the 1920s on, the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) inherited some of these ideas about “women’s rights,” while denouncing others, and later put a different vision of women’s liberation into practice, especially in the period from 1949 to the late 1970s in the People’s Republic of China. My thesis argues for conceptualizing this past as a history of socialist feminism and for locating socialist feminists among women cadres, cultural workers and labor models of this period. While various gains or losses of Chinese socialist feminism remain to be debated today, my thesis will also consider how, in the 1980s and 1990s, a post-Mao generation of feminists identified what they perceived as socialist feminism’s obvious shortcomings and spearheaded new forms of feminist discourse and practice in women’s literature, women’s studies and women’s activism. The second part of this thesis, while also referencing Chinese feminism’s connections to its immediate past, focuses more explicitly on the present landscape, drawing primarily on fieldwork conducted with Chinese feminist academics and students and with urban feminist activist groups operating outside the university context. By first examining the current state of Chinese youth and their relations to feminism, these chapters discuss possible reasons why young Chinese people do not often identify with feminism. Here I want to make a case for broadening the category of feminism by discussing its two likely popular forms, imbricated respectively with consumer and celebrity culture. However, this part of the thesis focuses more centrally on feminist academics, students, and activists, who are collectively the most active force in contemporary Chinese feminism. After the post-Mao generation, an intermediate generation became feminists largely through educational institutions, and after finishing graduate school many have found ways to expand academic feminism in Chinese universities. Academic feminists, however, take varied positions themselves with respect to the relation between research and activism, some offering help to student feminists organizing vigorous student societies on campus. Outside university campuses, some young graduates have grown up to be China’s most devoted feminist activists, working in crucial feminist organizations, whose core practices, including their use of social media, their activist strategies, and their relations to LGBT groups, will be elaborated. This is an interdisciplinary project centered on Chinese feminism and inspired by scholarship in Gender Studies, Cultural Studies, Women’s and Gender History, and Historical Theory. It does not aim to construct an overarching theoretical framework that might explain the present forms of Chinese feminism. Instead, I draw on a range of theoretical frameworks, including scholarship focused on the relations between history and history-writing, on intellectual work in popular culture, on relations between feminist theory and practice, and on the conceptualization of tradition and modernity. I am thus also engaging, implicitly and explicitly, with the cultural politics of relations between leftists and liberals, and between such critical axes as modernism and postmodernism. Overall, I aim to demonstrate how, for Chinese feminism, different meanings of “history of the present” ultimately converge in the ongoing relevance of historical ideas and practices, and in the ways Chinese feminists who write about history, or engage in other kinds of research or activism, continue to engender the present and the future.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):

The Occupy movement galvanized people from across the United States and around the world to stand up against corporate profiteering and political corruption. The revolutionary energy spread from community to community and Occupiers began to create a reality moving beyond racism, hierarchy, and patriarchy. Feminist activists, both women and men, had a major voice in Occupy. They called into question sexist behavior, unrecognized privilege and gender inequality in conjunction with other forms of oppression. Unfortunately the breakdown of the encampments and the backlash in the mainstream media led to a critical view of the movement. In reality, Occupiers formed networks of mutual aid which continue to expand and transform today.

Based on ethnographic research conducted at Occupy Los Angeles and Occupy Long Beach, this thesis project explores a feminist perspective of the Occupy movement. Inspired by applied visual anthropology and new media, Occupy Feminism is an interactive zine interspersed with writing, photographs and videos. This project is an educational resource for those who want to understand feminist theory, the Occupy movement and how they intersect.

Tilley, Jane Lucinda. "Feminism and the feminine in Yolande Villemaire's La vie en prose". Thesis, University of British Columbia, 1989. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/28553.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Exposing the fallacies of the existing ideological system founded upon a linguistic system of signifieds, recent women's writing has aimed to deconstruct the numerous hierarchies and stereotypes used against women, thus clearing a space for the hitherto repressed feminine and the marginal. The inclusion of a vast range of intertextual borrowing in La Vie en prose, by Yolande Villemaire, challenges the elitist boundaries erected by the closed academic literary world, incorporating elements from all genres and levels. Thanks to the diversity and number of these borrowings. La Vie en prose refuses the setting up of any new hierarchy, constantly questioning any classification to the extent that the whole concept of valorisation becomes ridiculous and irrelevant. This variety is imitated on an "intratextual" level as the text appears to be made up of a number of diverse texts produced by a dozen or so women writer-narrators. Again, the process of classification is thwarted as the idea is shown to be not only patriarchal, but also a result of a fundamental need or insecurity which apparently motivates the patriarchal obsession with nominisation and labelling. Similarly, the deceptive nature of the discourse which expresses this ideology, traditionally seen as concrete and infallible, is exposed and deconstructed. The "one word for one meaning" doctrine is replaced by a myriad possibilities of signification and language, as the text plays with the power of association which constitutes the text's digressive quality, exploiting both the phonetic and the graphic. This treatment of language represents an attempt to destroy the phallocracy through a dismantling of its discourse, seen as a powerful political and repressive tool. The "feminine", traditionally seen as the antithesis is reinscribed in a fluid and infinite discourse which patterns the rhythms and indeterminacy of women's jouissance. This is reiterated in a focus given to women's sexuality and to a fragmented feminine subject, considering the question of "nature versus nurture", the "maternal instinct", women’s sexual pleasure and their relationships with men. The text refuses all possibilities of hierarchisation on the literary, sexual and any other level, while the "laugh of the Medusa" echoes throughout.

Abstract (sommario):
This research examined definitions of feminists and the relationship between self-identification as a feminist and willingness to engage in action to reduce inequality between men and women. Two focus groups were held to discuss these issues with undergraduate women. All but one of the members self-identified as feminists. Group members aligned themselves with one of two definitions of feminist. Some women defined feminists as those who desire equality for women. This group distanced themselves from radical feminists. The other women asserted that feminists were concerned with human rights for both men and women. The women emphasized that men as well as women could be feminists. Consistent with social identity theory that posits that important identities are associated with action, the women participated in two types of activities that were related to reducing gender inequality. One type of action was individualist, such as responding to sexist remarks. The other type was involvement with groups and organizations that collectively worked to reduce inequality. The one group member who rejected the label of feminist held views and engaged in behavior consistent with a cultural definition of feminist.

Abstract (sommario):

West African Women writers are constantly looking for ways to maneuver the patriarchal system within their indigenous cultures. To say maneuvering implies the dilemma in consciously navigating patriarchal epistemology as West African women, which in reality is not exotic to other feminist struggles outside the continent. To deal with the dilemma of constantly maneuvering, this thesis suggest for an indigenous framework. It suggests Osun –a Nigerian goddess– as a response to the theoretical problems and as a methodology to navigating a postcolonial patriarchal worldview in order to express West African feminist discourse. The specificity of Osun is essential, but the fluidity of Osun across borders cannot be undermined as it paves the way for flexibility within feminist and gender discourse and draws upon various gender oppressed experiences. The idea of specificity and fluidity is fundamental to developing Osun as West African feminist discourse because of her ability to transcend space. The combination of specificity and fluidity are necessary within any feminist discourse as it allows for women from different regions to relate and align the tenets to their specific struggles found in the diversity of Osun.

Abstract (sommario):
There is little doubt that the Internet, and especially social media, has revolutionised our lives, transforming the way in which we communicate (Liveperson 2017), read the news (Pew Research Center 2016), shop and conduct business (Deloitte 2015), work (Zetterstrom 2012) and even find love (Pew Research Center 2015). The Internet has had an impact on feminism as well, revolutionising the way feminists participate in political and cultural activism and contributing to the creation of a fourth feminist wave. Thanks to the Internet, virtually anybody who has access to it can become an activist and fight for the movement from the comfort of their home, whether by contributing to the creation of an online archive, signing petitions, supporting boycott movements or sharing their experiences on a blog (Cochrane 2013). But what is the real impact of the Internet on the way activists operate? Will it replace grassroots activism with time, or is it contributing to the development of new strategies, which will cooperate with existing methods, in an effort to collectively change the culture we are living in? This study suggests the unfolding of a new, fourth feminist wave, analyses the contribution of the Internet to fourth wave feminism and explores the potential of online activism as a tool to combat misogyny.

Abstract (sommario):

This study aims to investigate the consequences for feminist sex therapy that it is promoted as an alternative to a mainstream approach. Analytically I focus on the relation between normativity, claims to knowledge and professional legitimacy. I study sex therapeutic academic texts, and the material is approached through a framework developed by combining Donna Haraway’s concept of situated knowledges with elements from Karen Barad’s agential realism

My analysis starts in feminist sex therapists’ criticism of how masculine norms in mainstream sex therapy lead to a flawed theory of sexual matters. Feminist sex therapists, however, allege that it is specifically feminist norms that grant a more complete theory of sex and sexual problems within feminist alternatives in sex therapy. To that effect, feminists discern sexual problems in relation to the impact a patriarchal society has on particularly women’s sexualities, and treatment is articulated as seeking to liberate women from constraints associated with gendered social positions.

In mainstream sex therapy, allegedly value-neutral insights into human physiology are called upon for the establishment of professional legitimacy. Nevertheless, normative investments are relied upon implicitly to discern sexual problems and sexual well-being with the consequence that sexual problems are understood as conditions that interfere with the ability to have sex, largely equated with coitus, and with the motivation to form coupled sexual relations. By alleviating sexual problems, these abilities and motivations are allegedly restored in the form of natural, already present, capacities for sexual functioning. Comparing my analysis to feminist critiques, I argue that the latter have not fully theorized the significance of normative investments, and have left unchallenged assumptions in mainstream therapy that enable a restorative and liberationist construal of sex therapy’s objective.

Although feminist alternatives contain a markedly different theorization of sexual problems, they have retained, from the mainstream approach, the notion that sex therapy seeks to liberate its clients. This notion stands in conflict with feminist theorizations of sexual problems, and in my conclusion I argue that feminist sex therapy would benefit from abandoning its liberationist element.

Abstract (sommario):
The emergence of the Christian Right and the feminist movement in the mid-to-late 20th century have had a significant impact on the political, psychological, and social landscape of the U.S., and this is especially true for Christian women who sit at the cross-roads of these movements. To understand the context surrounding this group, I examine different areas of sociological literature: the primacy of gender and religion in identity formation, Christian marriage and gender roles, the “culture wars” of the Christian Right, and a brief overview of feminist theory. Utilizing qualitative research methods, I interviewed 13 self-identified Christian women to learn how they understood their female and Christian identities, as well as how they negotiated gender roles. Participants were also asked to share their definition and identification with feminism (or lack of identification). A short quantitative survey followed the interview. Themes that emerged from this research include idealized understandings of faith and self, complex and contradictory practice, and rejection of labels. Through self-definition, participants were able to navigate away from stereotypes and communicate their beliefs as they related to their experience.

Abstract (sommario):
The term “feminist” is a widely used label that is often embraced by women who do not advocate feminism. The wide use of the feminist label in contrast to the declining presence of feminist activism indicates a problem with the development of a third wave of feminism in the United States. In this study, I evaluated trends in feminism in the United States through an analysis of public political discourse. A semantic discourse analysis of political discourse from 1870 to 2011 evaluated a shift in the use of inclusive and exclusive pronoun usage by female political speakers. Speeches compiled for this study were obtained from internet sources such as NPR, C-Span and CNN, and evaluated the oratory of Victoria Woodhull, Geraldine Ferraro, Hillary Clinton, Sarah Palin and Michelle Bachmann. The results of this study indicated that there was not a strong shift in the use of inclusive and exclusive pronouns overtime, but there was a large growth in both population and diversity of the targeted audience, and this growth was often not accommodated for in the discourse of contemporary female political candidates. The slow shift in inclusive discourse indicated a post-feminist line of thought that questioned the validity of an argument for a third wave of feminist activism in the United States. Political discourse cannot define a cause for post-feminism, but can indicate a downward trend in the influence of feminism as a contemporary cultural movement.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
This research asks which methods can successfully promote mainstream recognition for an issue, and if the success of such methods translates to a stronger feminist movement in Australia in the twenty-first century Western zeitgeist. These questions are important because broader-scale feminist consciousness-raising is critical at a time when the dominant discourses of neoliberalism and postfeminism often mean a reduced focus on collective campaigning for issues such as the awareness of gender-based violence, and there has arguably been an evacuation of substantive feminist politics in some areas. My original contribution lies in the testing and analysis of campaign methods and pathways for the information of Australian feminists who want to take women’s rights issues to more central mainstream spaces in feminist mass awareness campaigning. This research explores the deployment of what I call the twenty-first century’s ‘Tools of the Zeitgeist’. This thesis focuses on three current mainstream Tools of the Zeitgeist: celebrity philanthropy and activism; celebrity feminists; and mainstream, online and social media activism. This research is unique because the discussion revolves around these three areas for feminist activism, which I argue would be most beneficial when used in tandem because they are often utilised in other social movements’ mass awareness campaigns (e.g., poverty or environment) and are rarely deployed in unison in organised feminist mass awareness campaigning. This thesis argues that there is an increased velocity in the Australian mediasphere of feminist discourse and engagement, and as such, it recognises that this is a critical nexus for the potential for a larger scale feminist-led mass awareness campaigning in Australia.

Abstract (sommario):
This dissertation brings an interdisciplinary methodology to bear on the rhetorical analysis of women's sport and health social movements in the twenty-first century. Specifically, I read "sports feminism" as a rhetorical discourse that engages ongoing feminist struggles for women's rights to both their bodies and public space. Drawing on transnational feminist rhetorics, I network sports feminist arguments to international policy documents, like the Brighton and Beijing Declarations, to illustrate how the topoi of sport, health, and fitness function as commonplaces in global gender mainstreaming policy. In applying the metaphor of the network to the communicative infrastructure of global sports feminist advocacy, I also draw on new media rhetorics to analyze the role of the wireless Internet and social networking in the rhetorical practice of networking sports feminist policy and arguments across transnational lines of difference. Yet, in reading the rhetorical practices of the Women's International Sports Movement and Nike's Girl Effect through transnational feminist rhetoric, I illustrate how sports feminism is neither a homogenous discourse nor singular feminist identity, and thus, must be analyzed as a pluralistic political praxis with competing rhetorical objectives and audiences. Thus, the final chapter situates sports feminist rhetoric locally in the context of US-based girl power media culture, analyzing the impact of sports feminist rhetoric on the embodied perceptions of gender and gender relations of adolescent American girls. The project thus demonstrates the importance of understanding sports feminist rhetoric's global sociopolitical and economic roles and its impact on gendered identity and labor in the twenty-first century.

Abstract (sommario):
Feminist Current is a multi-author Canadian self-proclaimed feminist website which frequently publishes trans-exclusionary radical feminist (TERF) discourse via blogs, podcasts, and global news. This project is a critical discourse analysis of the ways in which Feminist Current communicatively constructs and deconstructs transgender identity in problematic and exclusionary ways. In this study, I consider significant definitions given through Feminist Current, entertain the question of whether TERF is a slur, and discuss the major themes. Based on twenty-three sampled essays published on Feminist Current, I find that Feminist Current authors use five major themes in their discourse: violence against women, strategic censorship, antimanipulation and pro-bodily autonomy, performances of humor and naivete, and calls for solidarity. This discourse functions to separate transwomen from women’s spaces and position transwomen as illegitimate and aggressive, while simultaneously repositioning radical feminism as a superior ideological framing.

This thesis explores both what feminism looks like in a digital age, as well as how the Internet and technology inform the ways in which feminists interact, build communities, and form identities. I found that online feminist spaces are built as communities of validation and support, education and empowerment, as well as spaces of radicalization and contention. Ultimately my thesis leads toward a new understanding of feminist activism that incorporates the unique characteristics and abilities of online feminism.

Abstract (sommario):
In the year of 2014, the new Swedish government declared itself as the world’s first feminist government. This thesis aims to study the Swedish foreign policy and thus to investigate if the declared feminist foreign policy has resulted in a changed foreign policy. By using two feminist theories; radical feminism and liberal feminism, the study’spurpose is to do a critical comparison between the governmental administration of Fredrik Reinfeldt in the years of 2010-2014, with the administration of Stefan Löfven between 2014-2018. After a recently finished first term of the feminist policy, the subject of this study is interesting in the perspective of evaluation. To investigate if the policy by fact has changed, a qualitative textual analysis will be used. Further, to analyze the foreign policy, foreign declarations from all years between 2011-2018 will constitute the material. In summary, the result demonstrates that a change in policy has appeared and can further be ascertained. Both administrations show clear features of liberal feminism. However, during the last term, between 2014-2018, the governmental policy has shown tendencies of more radical feminist elements. Although the world’s first feministgovernment has received great attention, the future of the feminist foreign policy is still indeterminate.

Abstract: This study has the aim of analyzing and investigating the process of critical revisionism of the tradition in The Mists of Avalon (1982), a novel by the American writer Marion Zimmer Bradley. The process of re-vision, concept framed by the feminist poet and critic Adrienne Rich in "When We Dead Awaken: Writing as Re-vision" (1972), assumes that female writers read the patriarchal literary tradition and, from a critical positioning, search in their art to disarticulate the patriarchate and its crystallized views of the feminine. The re-vision of the Matter of Britain, with the appreciation of female characters, is the strength of the esthetic project developed in the novel. With the purpose of deepening the understanding about the manifestation of this revisionist process, we will analyze how representations of the feminine and the mythical universe, present in Arthurian tradition, are brought to the narrative - from Morgaine's talks, she is one of the women in the history - already misreading and re-created from a feminist perspective, something new in the western tradition. To do so, in addition to Adrienne Rich's assumptions, we will use the notes of Sandra Gilbert and Susan Gubar in The Madwoman in the Attic (1979) referring to the literature of feminine authorship; Elaine Showalter and her considerations about feminist critics and gynocritics, and Mircea Eliade's works on mythology and the sacred

New perspectives in relation to the rural and agriculture has gained prominence in the face of crises (energy, food, environmental, economic and others) caused by the expansion of the logic of capital. So agricultures styles based on principles of agroecology gain visibility to seek the preservation of biodiversity, enhancement of more horizontal relations between "human-nature" and between them, ensuring the sovereignty and food security and local sustainability. Therefore, this study aims to understand the action of women in the management of activities in the backyards of the Community Bom Jesus, Maceio rural settlement, Itapipoca-CE. We used method with a critical feminist approach in conjunction with the peasantry elements. Methods, we chose to case study associated with participant observation techniques and interviews. The instruments were field diary, semi-structured script, camera and recorder. The results indicate that women in the practice of peasant agriculture developed in the yards has been mainly responsible for the preservation of biodiversity, management and varied techniques, crops associated with small livestock, the extraction and processing of food for family consumption and for playback. Backyards practiced since the dawn of agriculture constitute one way and know-how of women in agriculture that are indicating elements (ecological, social, economic and cultural) important to agroecology, such as biodiversity conservation, multiple handlings food production without pesticides and without fertilizers. The actual dialogue of women with the principles of agroecology, experienced in the yard, are improvers of new meanings to society.

The present work aims to know what Brazilian feminists registered about clothing and how their relationships with women dressing. By tracing this process, one tries to perceive the associations of the chosen theme with its ideals and to recognize the divergences and congruences of these discourses. Considering clothing as a fundamental cog in the construction of notions of hegemonic femininity, it is important to broaden the field of study, encompassing also the relations of the militants towards the feminine appearance and the femininity category that still today is the subject of debates within the feminist movements. For this dissertation, the focus was defined in the Decade of Women founded by the United Nations - a period between 1975-85, in order to recognize the ideas of the Brazilian militants at that moment, given the importance of this date for the debate on the female category in the country. In order to know the thoughts that pervaded Brazilian feminism, the Brazilian feminist alternative press is used here, more specifically the Brasil Mulher (1975-80), Nós Mulheres (1976-78) and Mulherio (1981-88), seeking to dissect the messages and images of the vehicles between the years of 1975-85. The alternative feminist press was indeed responsible for propagating the ideals of some strands of Brazilian feminism, as well as contributing effectively to the debates about the feminine condition.
