Abstract: University educators designed and co-taught a course which involved collaborative artmaking and learning with a community-based arts organization that serves individuals with disabilities. Their goal was to help university students examine the potential of art and how it applies to their personal and professional lives. They sought to better understand how to nurture a feeling of artistic agency in undergraduate students who do not define themselves as artists. Educators found that students benefited from an exploration of art fear through an inclusive approach to art creation. Keywords: Art fear; Disability; Collaborative artmaking; Higher education; Experiential learning. Résumé : Des éducatrices et éducateurs universitaires ont conçu et co-enseigné un cours axé sur la création artistique et l’apprentissage coopératif au sein d’un organisme communautaire voué aux arts qui dessert des personnes en situation de handicap. Leur objectif était d’aider les étudiant.e.s universitaires à analyser le potentiel de l’art et son impact sur leur vie personnelle et professionnelle. Ils voulaient savoir comment alimenter une volonté d’action artistique chez des étudiant.e.s de premier cycle qui ne se considèrent pas des artistes. Les éducatrices et les éducateurs ont remarqué qu’aborder la peur de l’art sous une optique de création artistique inclusive était bénéfique. Mots-clés : peur de l’art, handicap, création artistique collaborative, éducation supérieure, apprentissage expérientiel.

Abstract (sommario):

Violence from parents and violence from the immediate environment at the age of children causes them to become children who are easily afraid of sounds (Verbal), fear of physical violence (objects), and fear of the immediate environment. This final artwork project aims to create a sculpture art with the theme of the memory of a child's fear, which also explains the concept and process of creation and also the visual aesthetics of sculpture. The shape of the memory of children's fear is portrayed in the media of sculpture art with cast printing techniques. The creation of sculpture in this final project provides more insight into empirical experiences in creating works of art as well as the deepening of concepts in children's memory of fears.

ABSTRACT: Every act of censorship is also an act of iconoclasm. Together they constitute one of the oldest paradoxes of image making and of figuration. To make an image is both to want it and to fear it. The more it is desired, the more it seems contra naturam , and so is feared. It often has a vitality that is startlingly at odds with both its materiality and its concept. To parse individual episodes of censorship and iconoclasm is to uncover the roots of both the fear of images and the fear of art. But each of the many motives for censorship and iconoclasm testify, above all, to the impossibility of escaping it.

The impact of the widespread availability of antiretroviral therapy (ART) on the human immunodeficiency virus and acquired immune deficiency syndrome (HIV/AIDS) related attitudes, behaviours and practices of the general population in Sub-Saharan Africa is understudied. We assessed the impact of ART availability on the fear of HIV/ AIDS (measured at both community and personal levels) and HIV prevention practices in Rwimi, Uganda using a cross-sectional survey. The fear of HIV/AIDS was described as a perceived threat to either self and/or community regarding the risk of contracting the disease, whereby the higher the perception of the threat, the greater the fear. We assessed associations between the outcomes of the dependent variables on both the community and personal fear of HIV/AIDS, and the independent variables of HIV/AIDS-related knowledge and demographics. Qualitative data was also generated from focus group discussions (FGD) on the context of the fear of HIV/AIDS and HIV pre- vention practices. The majority of participants (89.4%; males - 86.8%; females - 90.8%) felt that ART availability has reduced the fear of HIV/AIDS in the community. In contrast, fewer participants (22.4%; males - 24.4%; females – 21.2%) mentioned that their personal fear of HIV/AIDS has been reduced with the availability of ART. From the qualitative study, factors identified as influencing the fear of HIV/AIDS included stigma, fear of infection, and the inconvenience of being on ART. Although fear of HIV/AIDS persists, the fear is reduced because of the availability of life-prolonging ART. HIV prevention practices are influenced by socio-cultural norms (gender roles, relationship dynamics, power and trust), which, we argue, should be considered when de-signing sustainable HIV/AIDS prevention programs.

In contemporary horror, the photographic image is often used as the object of horror or even represents the main antagonist of the story. We can trace the origin of such depictions to the very invention of the technique of photography in the 19th century, which was also the heyday of spiritualist theories about photography making the soul of the deceased visible to the human eye using chemical compounds. A notorious example is the case of photographer William Mumler who offered well-off relatives of recently deceased people in the States to make portraits with the ghosts of their loved ones. There are also reports of some peoples that allegedly also consider the soul to be closely bound to photography and in consequence abhor photography, as the film is supposedly capable of capturing and depriving the photographed person of their soul. Films like The Ring, The Others, Peeping Tom, and The Invisible Man demonstrate how frequently uncanny photography appears in the horror film genre and open questions about the reasons of such depictions. While the theory of horror claims that horror uses specific iconography of fear to reflect the common fears of the time (e.g. an invasion of giant insects and carnivorous plants in the 50s as a consequence of American fear of a communist invasion), the article explores the issue of photography as the main antagonist in the horror genre of the 21st century and whether this means that it appears as the universal fear of digital identity, surveillance, and identity theft.

Teaching 5-7-year old children with fear problems to cope with them is a substantial issue for many parents. The techniques that rapidly and effectively correct problematic child fears are essential for child psychologists. This study aims to reveal how to work effectively with children’s fears through short-term psychological support. A total of 90 students enrolled at various schools in Moscow between the ages of 5-7 participated to the study with a high number of fears. The study utilized the “Fear House” technique developed by Panfilova to determine the fears of children. The art therapy technique “Eliminating fears”, developed by Venger was also used to help children cope with their fears. The application indicates that there was a significant decrease in children’s fears.

Fear is a recurrent theme in today’s popular culture. Film director Steven Spielberg’s lifelong work presents the full range from awe and fear to terror, heading towards a deeply humanist approach of overcoming fear. This article puts homiletics into the context of current sociocultural discourse by applying the concept of ‘paradigm scenario’ (Ronald de Sousa) to fear in media culture and preaching. Preaching, like film, works with emotions such as fear and anxiety, initiating strong physical and mental reaction. To preach within a fearful world demands that one be aware of the psychology of fear. As much as preachers are ready to face their personal fears, they abstain from frightening others. At best, preaching is the art of supporting people to live life liberated by the gospel, speaking up against those who create an atmosphere of fear. The gospel provides numerous paradigm scenarios of courage and vision.

This article describes an arts-based research project where my purpose was to investigate how older women develop their skills as visual artists through the medium of drawing in a small group setting. The social construction of artist identities among the group and my teaching of drawing formed the basis of my study in this informal, community-based learning environment. I assessed how learning new creative skills later in life affects the quality of an individual’s sense of self and their perceived value and contribution in relation to society, and how apprehension about learning a new skill touches others in the group. My interest extended to investigating how the skill of drawing influences other areas of life like aesthetic awareness; and to the role of digital media in rendering the research. Arts based research as a method of inquiry allowed the use of alternative representation of results and findings.

IntroductionFear of giving birth may affect many pregnant women. Fear of childbirth leads to an increase in C-section demands and the ratio of C-section births. Group therapy addresses at least 8 people at the same time, which both saves time and treatment expenses.ObjectivesThe objective of this study was to evaluate the impact of group art therapy for the management of fear of giving birth.MethodsThirty women volunteers in the third trimester of pregnancy who were attending a public women's hospital and who had fear of giving birth were included in the study. They were randomly distributed to 2 groups. First group (n = 15) received 6 sessions of group art therapy. Second group (n = 15) received 6 sessions of psychoeducation regarding fear of giving birth. Each weekly psychotherapy session lasted 130 minutes.ResultsBy the end of the six weeks Beck depression scale (BDS) scores, Beck Anxiety Scale (BAS) scores and Wijma delivery expectancy/experience questionnaire version A (W-DEQ) scores decreased significantly in the group art therapy group (P < 0.001). In contrast, the psychoeducation group showed no significant changes in terms of BDS, BAS, W-DEQ scores.ConclusionsOur study shows that group art therapy may be a promising cost-effective treatment method to manage fear of giving birth in pregnant women. The study needs to be replicated in women coming from different cultures and socioeconomic statuses to establish group art therapy for the treatment of fear of giving birth.Disclosure of interestThe authors have not supplied their declaration of competing interest.

Abstract This qualitative study explored histories, perceptions, and attitudes of 18 preservice generalist teachers and how these may have contributed to their anxiety in making and teaching art. Data were collected through interviews, a background questionnaire, student reflective journals, and a researcher’s observation journal. Through grounded theory, the concept of low confidence/anxiety was developed to explain seven identified themes: teaching art, fear of drawing, understanding art, unrealistic expectations, judgments, making the grade, and teacher expectations. Contributing factors to anxiety in art making included lack of art knowledge, fear of making mistakes, and negative responses from peers and/or former teachers.

Abstract To inform the development of interventions to increase uptake and adherence to antiretroviral therapy (ART), we explored perceptions of ART in semi-structured interviews with 52 men and women from UK black African and black Caribbean communities. Verbatim transcripts were analyzed using framework analysis. Perceptions of ART could be grouped into two categories: doubts about the personal necessity for ART and concerns about potential adverse effects. Doubts about necessity stemmed from feeling well, doubts about the efficacy of ART, religious beliefs and the belief that treatment was futile because it could not cure HIV. Concerns about adverse effects included the fear that attending HIV services and taking treatment would lead to disclosure of HIV, feeling overwhelmed at the prospect of starting treatment soon after diagnosis, fears about side effects and potential long-term effects, and physical repulsion. The findings will facilitate the development of interventions to increase uptake and adherence to ART.

Art in the fast-changing modern era creates various works through organic combinations without any clear distinction. Art mask, a territory of art expressed by using masks that resemble a human face, the representation of the grotesque fusion design implemented by the art mask present various senses and thinking skills to modern people who expect new things against the existing forms. Therefore, the characteristics of fear, dislike, playfulness, and atypia in Grotesque can open up to a new making method in a comprehensive and innovative way. By incorporating the characteristics of Grotesque paintings that have become popular in modern art, this study expressed demonism by expressing the heterogeneous appearance of a sleeping woman and in a smooth line and geometric way in the form of a human face in the work expressed in art mask which is based on “Nightmare” by John Henry Pujelly in Work I, the bizarre image of the extremely exaggerated size of the eyes was embodied in a deformed form by not expressing the nose with the motif of “Strange Balloon-like Eyes Traveling to Infinite” by Odilong Le Dong in Work II, the tears in both eyes on the mask represented a physically damaged body, and used various lines to express disgust. Work III expressed the playfulness of infantile grotesque like clowns by using elements of satire in “conspiracy” by James Ansore as a motif. The Work IV expressed the time of hopelessness without life by expressing abnormally abhorrent and unnatural things and the distorted cravings of life in fear as skeletons that are abnormally disgusting and unnatural by using “Release of the Fifth Seal of John's Apocalypse” by El Greco as a motif. The conflicting emotions were expressed by gradating the skull's eyes with black paint, and was reinterpreted as a dream and hope using various colors of color. As a result of this study, it was identified that paintings that expressed the characteristics of grotesque through art mask production can present unlimited imagination and a variety of topics to artists in the makeup field. This study is expected to be used as a basic data for a follow-up study on art mask design in the future and will help to develop art mask designs.

Background. Maintaining optimal adherence to antiretroviral treatment (ART) is a challenge for adolescents with perinatally HIV (ALPHIV), and there is little consensus on what factors contribute to adherence in this population. This study assessed self-reported medication adherence among ALPHIV and explored structural factors that hinder or motivate them to adhere. Methods. This qualitative study used in-depth interviews with ALPHIV at the infectious disease control centre of a teaching hospital in Botswana. Thirty adolescents aged 12–19 years who were aware of their HIV status were recruited purposively. Transcribed interviews were analysed using the thematic approach and NVivo data analysis software. Findings. Nonadherence was a problem across age groups and gender. Perceived stigma was a major barrier to ART adherence. The fear of stigma and unintended disclosure were more pronounced in those attending boarding school. The adolescents were not willing to take medication in front of roommates and outside of the home. They opted for hiding and taking medication in privacy which led to missed doses. The heightened fear of being seen collecting ART medication affected keeping appointments for clinic visits. Fear of stigma also influenced the choice of action when there was a clash between school activities, dosing times, and scheduled clinic appointments for ART refill. The home environment was the main facilitator for adherence. Support was the strongest motivator for adolescents to adhere and keep up with clinic visits. On a personal level, the desire to be healthy and live long was a major motivator to adhere. Conclusions. The fear of stigma shaped the adolescents’ adherence behaviour. Perceived stigma affected the time and place to take medication, the visit to the clinic for ART refill, and self-disclosure of HIV status. There is need to encourage adolescents to self-disclose their HIV status to friends since the fear of unintended disclosure fuelled perceived stigma. Planning of clinic appointments should also be consistent with realistic daily activities of adolescents.

In such psychiatric cases where it is difficult to understand the personality of patient because of overcrowding of disease symptoms, art helped us as physicians to understand his personality in a much better way to prescribe the perfect similimum and experience the power of Homoeopathic medicines in bringing about gentle, rapid cure. In this particular case, we could also find that the pace of achieving cure after administration of correct homeopathic remedy is magical.

The Covid 19 pandemic is causing global fall down in almost every aspect, from health, economic, culture, and without exception, psychology, more specifically, on fear. Recent study on psychological impact concluded that specific groups from specific socio-demographic variables would act differently based on their fear of the disease. Every specific group have it’s priorities to survive the pandemic. The mass media also plays a role in driving the fear of people, reported and exaggerating information on the disease. This paper aims to give an artistic approach and respond of the pandemic situation through digital painting and serve as visual artefact of the 2020 pandemic. The method used during the creation process is literature studies on several case studies and relevant theories. The creation begins with phenomenon observation, theoretical approach, conceptualization, and finalizing. The result of the artwork conceptually is that essentially that people fear the most is death which is what being represented through the artwork.

The text discusses the role of art engaging in current urban issues, and how critical spatial practice and artistic-urbanistic strategies can contribute as durational involvement (see Paul O’Neill) to direct urbanism – for promoting a more just society by a socially engaged urban planning and development. The two projects 'NORMAL' and 'Harbour for Cultures' presented in this text address questions of what is considered 'normal' in our current society – which is characterized by the unplannable and increasing fears fueled by right wing demagogy. Rather than resigning in helplessness or fear – on the contrary, transparadiso considers this a unique chance to question dominant values of society driven by neo-liberal economics for re-introducing shared values of living together as social beings, for creating new, inclusive communities beyond cultural borders and thus counteracting the increasing isolation based on fear. Both projects exemplify participatory strategies like the 'production of desires' for producing programs beyond the functional, enhancing also poetic moments as non-recognized value in urban planning, and discuss how dialogues (see 'dialogical art', Grant Kester) can be created between conflicting interests. At the same time the projects make use of the 'autonomy of art' as inherent quality of approaching burning issues of society from an angle of the non-functional, the non-efficient – thus counteracting the dominant claims of decision making in our contemporary globalized society.

This study explored perceptions and care-seeking practices for HIV testing and contraception in order to obtain data for designing effective interventions to increase contraception among HIV-positive women. A triangulation of methods (household survey, focus group discussions and key informant interviews) were conducted in Wakiso district, central Uganda from January to April 2009. Results show that a majority of women, 2062/2896 (71.2%) would like to have an HIV test, while access to antiretroviral therapy (ART) was low at 237/879 (27%). Of the women who were on ART, 133/266 (50.0%) could not use contraception due to negative perceptions that a combination of ART and contraceptives would weaken them, as these drugs were perceived to be ‘strong’. Fear of side-effects for contraceptives and resistance from spouses were other main reasons. Constraints to HIV testing included fear of clients knowing their own HIV status and fear of their spouses’ reactions to the test results. Private midwives were identified as a potential outlet for delivering contraception to HIV-positive women.

This article presents an artistic inquiry among three students during an art-based research course in the art therapy master’s program at Ono Academy, Israel. Their collaboration focused on composing inquiry modes that could explore paternal representations of violent men that arise in artmaking with clay. Three fathers who took part in an abuse-prevention art therapy group, their group facilitator as a witness, and the three student-researchers participated in the project. The paper focuses on the research method that comprised artmaking with clay, a questionnaire, observations, and discussions. Two main themes arose within the study: coexisting contrasts and false perfection as well as a gained sense of success and assurance that could project onto their perceptions of parenting. The project highlights the significance of artmaking with clay as a research tool and as a potential prophylactic treatment for preventing domestic violence.

This article argues that Sophie Calle's desire to become her own work of art exists in tension with the fear of becoming a mere product for consumption. Recognising this fear of commodification allows us to view Calle's work from a couple of new angles. Firstly, it tells a compelling story about contemporary emotional life, in particular, the emotional demands made of women. Drawing on sociological perspectives, this article will explore Calle's work in relation to a commercial culture that turns the traditionally ‘feminine’ emotional domain into a lucrative resource. Secondly, it allows us to see Calle's art-making as a form of defence against this injunction to ‘sell oneself’. In a consumer culture in which one's sense of a private self is pushed further and further into a corner, art appears as a refuge in which one's creative singularity may be preserved.
