The focus of this research is “fanvids” which are the creative work of fans that combine clips or images from a visual “canon” source (usually a television series or movie) to music to create an alternative narrative. By using qualitative content analysis methods, I sampled from the television show Supernatural and the 2009 film Star Trek to understand the ways diverse characters were presented and what types of cultural narratives existed. Then I sampled from seven different vidding communities, collecting a total of 105 vids and 6509 comments on those vids as the second part of my sample. Then drawing on the sociological subfields of social psychology, gender, cultural studies, as well as the broader literatures of media and film studies, I analyzed both the data from canons and fanvids. My analysis centered on the following research questions: a) What are the cultural narratives present in the canon sources and how are those narratives rejected, accepted, replaced, or otherwise transformed within fanvids? (b) How do the narratives present within the canon source and within the vids reflect the ideologies and spirit of the culture that produces those narratives? (c) Are these vids and discussions a sign of potential change in cultural ideologies and narratives and, if so, what change is taking place? My findings within the two canons include an emphasis on a masculinity that maintains control through violence and aggression; in contrast vids reject this type of masculinity and the larger cultural narratives that support it, except when that violent masculinity is sexualized in the context of homosexual relationships. Further, vids predominantly reject the heteronormativity found in both Supernatural and Star Trek in favor of presenting queer relationships. Within this dissertation, I have used the transformation from canon to fandom as a narrative proxy for cultural change. The differences and similarities between canon and vid point to deficiencies both in narrative and in representation in the media we are producing in the U.S. as well as narratives that are stable and enduring, so much so that fans add them even when they are not present in canon. These are the stories our culture, right now, is built on; essentially, these are the narratives that are part of the cultural ideologies that reflect hopes, dreams, beliefs, and ideologies of the people within our society.

本稿では日本のテレビドラマの「Fansubs」の特徴を調べる為、3つのテレビドラマの日本 語の台詞と、ファンが作った字幕を比べている。原文のテキストが翻訳と字幕制作でどの ように変わったかを情報の増減や誤訳など9つのカテゴリーに分類し、字幕テキストを 分析した。作成したのがプロの翻訳者ではなく、または非常に短期間で作成されたこの 「Fansubs」は、公式のテレビやDVDの字幕よりも誤訳などのエラーが非常に多いことが分 かった。"Fansubs" are subtitles translated by fans. In this thesis the characteristics of fansubs of Japanese TV-dramas are investigated by comparing the original dialog of three TV-dramas to their subtitles produced by fans. The subtitles were analysed using 9 categories to classify the change of information level that the original text had undergone in the translation and subtitle production. The fansubs in this study, whether it is because the translators are not professionals or because they were produced in a very short time, were found to contain a much larger number of mistranslations than what is ususaly found in official TV or DVD subtitles.

Denna uppsats behandlar Joseph Sheridan Le Fanus kortroman ”Carmilla”(1871-72). Berättelsen handlar om hur den unga kvinnan Laura lär känna den mystiska Carmilla, och de tycks forälska sig i varandra. Men Carmilla visar sig vara en vampyr, och hon dödas. Tolkningar av verket har gått isär kring huruvida berättelsen ska forstås som ”queer” och transgressiv, eller som patriarkal och konservativ. I min läsning av verket utgår jag från Tzvetan Todorovs undersokning av den fantastiska genren i boken The Fantastic: A Structural Approach to a Literary Genre(1975). Den fantastiska genren karaktäriseras enligt Todorov av en hermeneutisk tvekan mellan olika förklaringar av en övernaturlig händelse. Jag undersöker hur ”Carmilla” passar in i denna genre, samt undersöker huruvida Lauras känslor inför Carmilla, där hon tvekar mellan skräck och kärlek, kan förstås som en form av fantastik. Slutsatsen är att en fantastisk läsning av ”Carmilla” kan belysa hur verket undflyr en tolkning som ser verkets ideologiska innehåll som fast och entydigt. Istället menar jag att tolkningsarbetet kan ses som ett begär efter kunskap, som speglas av hur Lauras eget begär gestaltas i berättelsen, samt hur själva läsakten kan ses som meningsskapande.

Arkkityypit ovat ihmiskunnan kollektiivisia ydinhahmoja, joista on kerrottu tarinoita tuhansien vuosien ajan ympäri maailmaa. Tämän Pro gradu -tutkielman tavoitteena oli selvittää, millaisia arkkityyppejä henkilöbrändistä viestitään, ja miksi nämä hahmot mahdollisesti eroavat toisistaan. Tätä näkökulmaa tarkasteltiin brändi-imagon ja brändi- identiteetin kautta. Arkkityyppien eroavaisuuksien pohjalla tutkittiin eri osapuolten motiiveja kertoa tarinoita henkilöbrändistä.
Tässä tutkimuksessa tutkittiin Lady Gagaa, joka on yksi musiikkialan suurimmista henkilöbrändeistä. Tutkimusmenetelmänä tässä tutkimuksessa käytettiin sisällön analyysiä. Lady Gagan omaa viestintää analysoitiin Youtube-videohaastattelujen kautta. Mediasta analysoitiin kolmea populäärimediaa: People Magazinea, Rolling Stonea ja New York Timesia. Fanien viestinnässä analysoitiin Twitter-sivuston viestejä, jotka Lady Gaga oli suoraan osoittanut faniyhteisölleen ”Little Monstereille”. Aineisto kerättiin internetistä ja analysoitiin tutkijan toimesta 12 arkkityypin luonteenpiirteiden kautta.
Tuloksista kävi ilmi, että Lady Gaga edusti itse Luojan arkkityyppiä. Media taas toi esille eniten Kapinallisen arkkityyppiä ja fanit viestivät eniten Parantajan arkkityyppiä. Brändi-imago oli siis brändi-identiteettiin nähden hyvin erilainen. Tämä selittyi viestinnän motiivien avulla. Henkilöbrändiä itseään motivoi eniten vakaus ja yhteisöllisyys. Fanien tapauksessa nämä motiivit kohtasivat toisensa, sillä heitä motivoi eniten yhteisöllisyys, oman identiteetin esilletuominen ja voimaantuminen. Median viestinnässä aivan erilaiset motiivit toivat esille eri tyyppisiä arkkityyppejä. Mediaa motivoi viestintään trivialisoituminen, kaupallistuminen, spektaakkelinhakuisuus ja apaattisuus. Tämän takia Kapinallinen hahmo nousi pinnalle median viestinnässä. Aiemmasta teoriasta poiketen Lady Gaga edusti useita arkkityyppejä, näyttäytyi erilaisena eri lähteissä sekä myös muuttui arkkityyppinä vuosina 2008–2010.
Tämä tutkimus todisti, että arkkityypit ovat näkökulmana erittäin hedelmällisiä tarkastellessa henkilöbrändejä. Esille tuli myös se, kuinka moniulotteinen ja haastava nykypäivän brändiympäristö henkilöbrändeillä voi olla median ja fanien välissä.

There is a conflict on the island of Rota in the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands between conservationists and the cultural traditions of Chamorro inhabitants. The traditional model of broadcasting media to a wide audience is not effective in intervening in environmental conflicts within indigenous communities compared to an emerging model of filmmaking that embraces local voices and perspectives. Historically, indigenous depictions in media tend to misrepresent "Others" in order to reinforce the imperialist interests of Western society. Within this essay I intend to analyze how Western media suppresses indigenous voice while investigating strategies for the creation of effective environmental films targeted towards specific local audiences. Awareness of the mistakes of filmmakers of the past combined with the availability of inexpensive production and distribution technologies will allow alternative models of filmmaking to portray a diversity of perspectives. Environmental films that feature indigenous voices allow local communities to define and strengthen their own cultural values while creating texts that broaden global understandings of the diversity of the human experience.

Les peintures murales romaines de la villa de p. Fannius synistor a boscforeale pres de pompei, apartiennent au deuxieme style pompeien et sont datablesde quanrante av. J. -c. Environ. Apres leur depose, les decors d'une meme piece ont ete disperses dans differents musees, ce qui complique leur etude et necessita des restitutions. Les decors imitent l'appareil du mur avec l'aide de la seule peinture. Des schemas plus ou moins elabores sont utilises selon le type de pieces a decorer. Dans les salles secondaires, l'ordonnance consiste en une colonnade fictive devant le mur ferme. Dans certaines pieces de reception, le mur s'ouvre en partie haute pour laisser voir des colonnades ou diverses architectures en arriere plan. Dans un salon, des personnages peints grandeur nature se detachent devant le mur. Les comparaisons effectuees avec les autres decors du deuxieme style montrent des rapprochements evidents evec certaines maisons pompeiennes, mais surtout avec la villa de popee a oplpntis, un meme atelier ayant du travailler dans cette derniere demeure et dans la villa de p. Fannius synistor. Cette etude a permis de saisie l'importance des peintures de boscoreale dans la production du deuxieme style pompeien au moment ou l'illusionnisme est a son apogeeThe roman wall paintings from the villa of p. Fannius synistor at boscoreale, near pompeii, belong to the second pompeian style and are dated circa fortyb. C. After being removed from the walls, the paintings of these roomshave been scattered among several museums, which complicates their study and has necessitated some restitution work. These decors, utilizing only paint, imitate the structure of the wall courses. A wide variety of schemes, rancing from simple to elaborate were used depending upon the type of room. In secondary rooms, the disposition consists of a ficticious colonnade in front of a closed wall. In some reception rooms, the wall is open on the top section to permit the view of colonnades or various architectures in the background. In another reception room, life-sized persons are painted stading in front of the wall. The comparisons made with other decors from the second style show obvious links some pompeian houses but mostly with the villa of poppee in oplontis, with the same team of painters having worked in the latter residence and also in the villa of boscoreale. This study was able to convey the importance of the paintings from boscoreale in the second pompeian style production

Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior - CAPESIn ancient Greece, some authors used the mythological universe to produce their plays, thus creating a new story, or another version of the same story. This practice is very similar to what happens in fanfiction, or fanfic, a story written by a fan, involving the scenarios, characters and plots previously developed in the original. Based on this textual genre, this work presents a proposal of a pedagogical intervention for students of the 9th grade of Elementary School in a State public school in Aracaju-SE. In general terms, the methodology involves workshops aimed at reading, critical understanding and elaboration of fanfictions. The proposal is supported by the methodological concepts proposed by Roxane Rojo, which deals with the promotion by the school of teaching proposals that involve the cultural and semiotic multiplicity of society. Among the theoretical contributions that underlie the discussions are the approaches of Bakhtin's circle about the dialogical analyzes of the discourse, of Michel Foucault and Roland Barthes, which deal with the concept of authorship. The contributions of Maurizio Gnerre, who discusses the relations between writing and power, by Donna Haraway, on the relations between organism and machine, and Humberto Maturana, about technology and human living, were also used. The contributions of Maria da Glória Bordini and Vera Teixeira Aguiar were used for the didactic sequence, main point to the application of the proposal, which discusses the Receptive Method of reading, which encourages students to produce texts effectively and expand these preferences with the presentation of new readings to students. Student participation in fanfic production workshops was instrumental in their perception of reading and text production, as well as stimulating work in a collaborative way.
Na Grécia antiga, alguns autores usavam o universo mitológico para produzir suas peças, criando, assim, uma nova história, ou ainda, outra versão da mesma história. Essa prática é muito parecida com o que acontece na fanfiction, ou fanfic, história escrita por um fã, envolvendo os cenários, personagens e tramas previamente desenvolvidos no original. Baseado nesse gênero textual, este trabalho apresenta uma proposta de intervenção pedagógica destinada a alunos do 9º ano do Ensino Fundamental de uma escola pública da rede estadual em Aracaju-SE. Em termos gerais, a metodologia envolve oficinas que visam à leitura, à compreensão crítica e à elaboração de fanfictions. A proposta está respaldada nos conceitos metodológicos propostos por Roxane Rojo, que trata do fomento, por parte da escola, de propostas de ensino que envolvam a multiplicidade cultural e semiótica da sociedade. Entre os aportes teóricos que fundamentam as discussões estão as abordagens do círculo de Bakhtin acerca das análises dialógicas do discurso, de Michel Foucault e Roland Barthes, que tratam do conceito de autoria. Foram também utilizadas as contribuições de Maurizio Gnerre, que discute as relações entre escrita e poder, de Donna Haraway, sobre as relações entre organismo e máquina, e de Humberto Maturana, entre tecnologia e viver humano. Para a sequência didática, central na aplicação da proposta, foram utilizados os aportes de Maria da Glória Bordini e Vera Teixeira Aguiar, que discorrem sobre o Método Recepcional de leitura, que incentiva os alunos à produção efetiva de textos e a ampliação dessas preferências com a apresentação de novas leituras aos alunos. A participação dos estudantes nas oficinas de produção de fanfics revelou-se instrumental na percepção destes acerca da leitura e produção de texto, além de estimular o trabalho de forma colaborativa.

La tesi analizza il romanzo Uncle Silas dello scrittore irlandese Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu. Il primo capitolo fornisce una panoramica della vita e delle opere dell'autore, focalizzandosi sulle sue opere più note. Il secondo capitolo verte su uno dei romanzi più conosciuti e riusciti di Le Fanu, Uncle Silas. Unitamente allo stile e al contenuto dell'opera vengono analizzati i personaggi e le varie tematiche, come la questione anglo-irlandese, la rappresentazione simbolica dell'Irlanda, il ruolo delle sette religiose dissidenti e la crisi religiosa dell'autore. Il terzo e ultimo capitolo è imperniato sull'influsso del pensiero di Emanuel Swedenborg sull'opera di Le Fanu e in particolare sulla struttura simmetrica di Uncle Silas, un romanzo in cui non vi è distinzione tra il mondo spirituale e reale, tra vita e morte.

This dissertation is a text analysis of the short novel Carmilla (1872) by the Irish ghost story-author Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu. It is a close reading analysis where I apply a queer theoretical perspective using Mia Franck’s model to analyze different silence practices in Carmilla. I focus on the female vampire Carmilla and her companion Laura and how they are portrayed in this short novel. I will ask the questions: do the characters Carmilla and Laura show a non-heterosexual relationship, passion and desire? How do they depart from the gender norm and can they be seen as characters who deviate from what society considers ‘normal’ behaviour? And can Carmilla and Laura’s relationship be seen as an example of silenced homosexuality and in what way is it expressed? Carmilla and Laura’s behaviour can certainly be described as queer and it is effective to examine the novella using silence practices through a queer perspective. Many of the practices are written silences. Mostly, its things that the reader realizes before the storyteller Laura does herself. They reveal numerous oddities in the story, taking the form of narrative, camouflaged, performative, ritualized and existential silences. Prominent examples are the way Carmilla hides both her vampiric and lesbian sides which Laura is repelled at in addition to her own lustful and passionate emotions. As a future teacher, one of my most important jobs will be to educate my pupils about democratic values and that all kinds of discrimination should be discouraged. An essay of this sort is one way to educate them in how gender and sexuality can be seen from historical, political and cultural perspectives.

The diploma thesis is focused on the use of parametric programming family of workpieces. The practical part includes the design of production technology and the creation of a parametric programs for the production of a given group of workpieces using a workpiece measuring probe. The use of common and system variables can be applied to the toolpath programming and the measurement of workpiece offsets, workpieces and machined areas by a workpiece probe and for measuring and checking tools using a tool probe. Measured values can be used in conditional programming to increase the level of automation of the manufacturing process.

El fang biològic es produeix en les plantes de tractament d'aigües residuals urbanes i industrials. El tractament i la gestió dels fangs és un dels problemes més importants en el camp del tractament de les aigües residuals. Aquesta situació es preveu que es veurà agreujada en el futur, per un increment del volum de fang produït associat a l'exigència de nivells més alts de depuració i per l'augment dels nombre d'estacions depuradores en funcionament. D'altre banda, les limitacions que presenten les opcions tradicionals de gestió dels fangs, fa necessari buscar solucions innovadores i efectives per a solucionar el problema que suposa la gestió d'aquests fangs biològics. Els fangs biològics són de naturalesa carbonosa i amb un alt contingut de matèria orgànica. Aquestes característiques, permeten la conversió del fang en un sòlid adsorbent de tipus carbonós. Aquesta conversió ofereix el doble benefici de reduir el volum de fang que ha de ser gestionat i alhora produir un adsorbent amb un cost inferior a la dels adsorbents convencionals (carbons actius comercials).
Fins el moment, els tractaments alta temperatura han demostrat la seva efectivitat per du a terme el procés de transformació dels excedents de fang biològic en un sòlid adsorbent carbonós (carbó actiu). Com a alternativa a aquests processos a alta temperatura, es proposa un nou procés d'obtenció d'un sòlid adsorbent carbonós a partir dels excedents de fangs biològics, mitjançant un tractament a baixa temperatura, combinant el tractament per microones amb l'addició d'un reactiu químic (H2SO4).
La present tesi analitza el tractament dels excedents de fangs biològics utilitzant un tractament mitjançant microones i l'addició d'àcid sulfúric (H2SO4), al mateix temps analitza la possibilitat d'utilitzar els sòlids adsorbents obtinguts per a millorar la qualitat de les aigües residuals.
Paràmetres d'operació com poden ser la quantitat d'àcid sulfúric addicionada al fang, el nivell de potència del forn microones i el temps de tractament, es modificaran per tal de determinar la influència que poden tenir sobre la qualitat del sòlid adsorbent. Un cop determinada la qualitat dels diferent sòlids adsorbents s'avalua la seva capacitat per a l'eliminació de colorant i metalls en fase líquida. Els resultats obtinguts es comparen amb els obtinguts per un carbó actiu derivat de fangs i un carbó actiu comercial.
The sewage sludge is produced by urban and industrial wastewater treatment plants. The treatment and disposal of sewage sludge is an expensive and environmentally sensitive problem growing world-wide. In recent years, sewage sludge is being generated in ever increasing amounts and meanwhile environmentally quality standards are becoming more stringent. Furthermore, with some traditional disposal routes coming under pressure and others being phased out, it is necessary to seek cost-effective and innovate solutions to the problem incurred by sewage sludge disposal.
Sewage sludge is carbonaceous in nature and rich in organic materials. Hence it has the potential to be converted into a useful carbonaceous adsorbent material. This conversion could offer the combined benefits of reducing the volume of sewage sludge and producing a valuable adsorbent with lower cost than commercial activated carbons.
At the moment, the high temperature treatments have been show the feasibility of the conversion of sewage sludge in an activated carbon. As alternative to these high temperature treatments, a novel way of carbonaceous adsorbent preparation was attempted combining microwaves heating and the addition of chemical compounds.
The possibility of obtaining a carbonaceous adsorbent material from surplus biological sludge has been investigated. This present work analyze the treatment of the sewage sludge using microwave heating and the addition of a chemical reagent (H2SO4), and the applications of the sludge based microwave treated adsorbent to improving the quality of the wastewater.
Operational parameters such as the amount of H2SO4 added, the level power of microwave oven and the processing time were modified to ascertain their influence on the quality of carbonaceous adsorbent obtained. Once determined the quality of the different carbonaceous adsorbent obtained, these adsorbents were employed for dye and metal removal in liquid phase. The results obtained were compared with the adsorption capacity of a sludge based activated carbon and a commercial activated carbon.

La ficción, en sus diversas formas, tiene el poder de provocar reacciones en los seres humanos que no son conscientes de sus propios autores. Los fans, admiradores de una persona en particular, personaje, trabajo o idea, se sienten motivados, en un contexto de creatividad efervescente, sacar sus propias trayectorias narrativas en relación con la figura que admiran. Como una de estas manifestaciones aparecen, entonces, las fanfics (fan = fan fiction y fics =), producciones textuales románticas que tienen como punto de partida el centro de admiración de un fan. Con el tiempo y el advenimiento de Internet, el contexto de la producción de estas historias gañó ajustes sorprendentes, como la posibilidad de lecturas interactivas (que el lector disfruta de la narrativa desde la perspectiva de un personaje) y una organización editorial distinta, en la que autores y lectores interactuam papeles, reducciendo la jerarquía típica de la literatura existe entre los transmisores y receptores. Atención a la calidad textual de cuentos escritos y su publicación en serie - el trabajo destinado a los beta-readers o lectores beta - también simbolizan un aspecto importante en la producción y difusión de fanfics, elevando el concepto de legitimidad en un género literario desarrollado por "aficionados ". Es también en este escenario un paralelo histórico entre los fanfics y la génesis de las publicaciones seriadas brasileños románticas francesas: popular, asequible, romántico y publicado en serie, series democratizaron la lectura en el siglo XIX, similar al fenómeno que se produce con fanfics hoy, en el siglo XXI. Después de contemplar la estructura narrativa interna y el entorno externo que guía la producción y publicación de fanfics, y existiendo en el proceso de envío y recepción y sus posibles orígenes históricos, se vuelve relevante también evaluar los recursos y las estrategias utilizadas por los escritores literarios adolescentes (como fondo para esta revisión está el viaje del héroe propuesto por el escritor y cineasta Christopher Vogler, que describe las 12 las etapas de que se utiliza el héroe o protagonista en su trayectoria).
A ficção, em suas mais variadas formas, tem o poder de suscitar no ser humano reações que seus próprios autores desconhecem. Os fãs, admiradores de determinada pessoa, personagem, obra ou ideia, se sentem motivados, em um contexto de efervescente criatividade, a traçar seus próprios rumos narrativos em relação à figura que admiram. Como uma dessas manifestações, surgem, então, as fanfics (fan = fãs e fics = de ficção), produções textuais romanceadas que têm como ponto de partida o foco da admiração de um fã. Com o tempo e o advento da internet, o contexto da produção destas histórias ganhou configurações surpreendentes, como a possibilidade de leituras interativas (em que o leitor desfruta da narrativa sob a perspectiva de alguma personagem) e uma organização editorial diferenciada, em que autores e leitores interagem entre si alternando papéis e reduzindo a hierarquia literária típica existente entre emissores e receptores. A atenção com a qualidade textual das histórias escritas e sua publicação seriada trabalho destinado às beta-readers, ou leitoras-beta - também simbolizam um aspecto importante na produção e divulgação das fanfics, levantando o conceito da legitimação literária em um gênero desenvolvido por amadores . Cabe ainda neste cenário um paralelo histórico entre as fanfics e os folhetins franceses responsáveis pela gênese do romance brasileiro: populares, acessíveis, românticos e publicados de maneira seriada, os folhetins democratizaram a leitura ainda no século XIX, fenômeno semelhante ao que ocorre com as fanfics atualmente, no século XXI. Após contemplar a estrutura narrativa interna e o contexto externo que norteia a produção e publicação das fanfics, bem como as relações existentes em seu processo de emissão e recepção e suas possíveis origens históricas, se torna relevante avaliar também os recursos e estratégias literárias utilizadas pelos adolescentes escritores (como pano de fundo para esta avaliação, é utilizada a jornada do herói proposta pelo escritor e cineasta Christopher Vogler, que classifica em 12 os estágios pelos quais o herói ou o protagonista, passa durante sua trajetória).

The democratization of new media technologies, particularly the software tools though which "content" can be manipulated, has invited a seemingly vast array of modes through which people can express themselves. Conversations in fan studies, for example, cite the novel ways in which new media allow fans to alter texts in the expression of their subcultural needs, while theorizations of media often reverse the paradigm by arguing how advances in technology will revolutionize how we interact with, and hence, know the world. Frequently overlooked are the ways in which these technologies and communities co-construct engagement and the extent to which this engagement spurs novel ways of interaction.
This dissertation addresses these problems by theorizing the role of the medium as a ludic negotiation between text and fan, informed--but not determined--by the rules and strictures that construct both these discrete media artifacts and the communities in which these texts circulate. Nowhere are these concerns more evident than in the subcultural realm of anime fan translations, where an eclectic blend of tech-savvy, Japanese language proficient, culturally competent individuals from different backgrounds converge to form groups who have self-nominated themselves to spread anime through timely, efficient, and accurate translations. To be successful, they must navigate multiple linguistic and cultural currents as they move between Japanese and their target language, deftly avoid running aground on the shores that structure the boundaries of container media, all the while remaining mindful of ideological and subcultural discursive shoals as they scan the horizon for alternate paths to their translation goal. These fan translators are, to be less dramatic, limited in the types of translations they can provide by the formal properties of the selected medium, but these limitations should be conceived as a generative process motivating translators to seek novel ways of engagement with the medium to meet both their translation needs and the needs of the communities in which their translations circulate.

Automatisk sparning i datorprogram undersöks från perspektivet hur användare upplever tryggheten till att deras arbete ska finnas kvar när de arbetar med en dator, och hur de reagerar på en ny typ av design. Det finns ett problem som ligger i hur datorer rent tekniskt är uppbyggda, jämfört med hur datoranvändare är vana att objekt fungerar i verkligheten. Nuvarande och gamla dator- program har tittats på för att se hur de har löst funktionerna kring sparning. Som teori för hur sparning förstås av dator- användare används mentala modeller och metaforer. Människans begränsningar hos minne och uppmärksamhet används för att förklara varför sparning bör skötas automatiskt. En serie undersökningar är gjorda som visar att den genomsnittlige dator- användaren idag anser sig lita på datorer till stor del när de arbetar med dem, samtidigt som de har beteenden som antyder att de inte litar på dem. Slutligen gjordes ett test med ett krånglande datorprogram som alltid bevarar användarens arbete. Dess resultat visar att datoranvändare kan lita på transparenta program som sparar i bakgrunden, utan att användaren märker någonting.

In this thesis, new methods to handle reconvergent fanout and feed-back during behavioral level test generation are proposed. These methods have been implemented - into a previously developed automatic test generator. The improved test generator was tested on five behavioral circuit models. For circuits with the reconvergent fanout situation, the improved test generator can generate tests completely automatically. For circuits with feed-back, user assistance in a circuit initialization step is required. Some suggestions for future development for the test generator are discussed. Examples on how to use the improved test generator are presented.

Undertexter skapade av fans, så kallade fansubs, utmärker sig ofta med att utmana de standardiserade normerna inom undertextning genom att vara friare från deras inflytande. En serie som det har skapats relativt mycket fansubs för är den norska webbaserade ungdomsserien SKAM, som fans började skapa egna undertexter till eftersom de ville göra serien mer tillgänglig för tittare från andra länder. Syftet med denna uppsats är att utföra en kvalitetsundersökning av två engelskspråkiga fansub-versioner till tv-serien SKAM. Undersökningen utfördes med hjälp av FAR-modellen, som är en modell skapad för kvalitetsanalys av mellanspråkliga undertexter. FAR-modellen bedömer kvaliteten på undertexter i tre olika områden: funktionell ekvivalens, acceptans och läsbarhet. Undersökningens resultat visar att kvaliteten på fansubs till SKAM är jämförbar med andra fansubs. Kvaliteten varierar dock en del inom de olika områdena, då båda versionerna fick sämst resultat inom läsbarhet, men presterade relativt bra inom funktionell ekvivalens och acceptans.Subtitles created by fans, so called fansubs, are known to often challenge standardized norms in translation by being freer from their influence. A TV series that many fansubs have been created for is SKAM, the Norwegian web-based series aimed at teens, which fans started creating their own subtitles for because they wanted to make it more accessible to viewers from other countries. The aim of this paper is to carry out a quality assessment study of two English fansub versions for the TV series SKAM. The study was carried out with the help of the FAR model, a model that was created for assessing the quality of interlingual subtitles. The FAR model investigates quality in three different areas: functional equivalence, acceptability and readability. The results of the study show that the quality of the fansubs for SKAM is comparable to that of other fansubs. However, the quality varies somewhat between the different areas, as both versions had the lowest results in readability, but performed better in functional equivalence and acceptability.

Partindo do pressuposto de que as sociedades estruturam as possibilidades de interação sexual entre os indivíduos, definindo a série de parceiros e as práticas sexuais que são aceitáveis, buscamos por meio deste estudo observar, através da Análise de Discurso, as vozes que desafiam a interdição do incesto consentido a partir da popularização de um novo gênero literário, próprio às sociedades em redes, que são as fanfics (produções literárias realizadas por fãs baseados em qualquer produto cultural). É por meio da historicidade que se pode encontrar todo um processo discursivo marcado pela produção de sentidos que condenam o incestuoso, forçando-o a buscar outras formas de significar. Desejamos então mapear os discursos que atravessam as narrativas, tentando compreender de que maneira a própria rede permite a vocalização destes discursos contra uma normatização da sexualidade, que, segundo nossa hipótese, produzem novos sentidos que naturalizam o incesto consentido. A coleta do material se deu em três grandes portais de armazenamento e divulgação de fanfics: “Nyah! Fanfiction”, “Spirit Fanfics e Histórias” e “Wattpad”.
Based on the assumption that societies structure the possibilities of sexual interaction between individuals, defining the series of partners and sexual practices that are acceptable, we seek by means of this study to observe, through Discourse Analysis, voices that challenge the interdiction of the incest consented from the popularization of a new literary genre, proper to societies in networks, which are fanfics (literary productions made by fans based on any cultural product). It is through historicity that one can find a whole discursive process marked by the production of meanings that condemn the incestuous, forcing him to seek other forms of meaning. We want to map the discourses that go through the narratives, trying to understand how the network itself allows the vocalization of these discourses against a normalization of sexuality, which, according to our hypothesis, produce new meanings that naturalize consented incest. The material was collected in three major storage portals and fanfics: "Nyah! Fanfiction","Spirit Fanfics and Stories" and "Wattpad".

Syftet med denna studie var att utifrån olika kvalitetsnormer jämföra och analysera skillnader mellan professionella undertextares undertexter och amatörers undertexter. Dialogen från fyra filmer parades med motsvarande undertexter av professionella undertextare så väl som av amatörer, varpå skillnader registrerades, viktades samt analyserades. Resultaten visar att det föreligger signifikanta skillnader mellan undertexter av professionella undertextare och amatörer på ett flertal punkter, som till exempel struktur och semantik, reduktion och expansion, antal tecken, antal ord, exponeringstid samt antal undertextenheter. Genomgående så översätter amatörerna originaldialogen mer ord-för-ord än vad de professionella undertextarna gör, samtidigt som de professionella undertextarna stryker stora delar av dialogen, vilket innebär att tittare som använder amatörundertexter får betydligt mer text att läsa, vilket i sin tur innebär att mindre tid ägnas åt filmernas bildmässiga innehåll.

Aquesta Tesi Doctoral se centra en el desenvolupament de mètodes analítics per a determinar tres grups de contaminants d’interès emergent que inclouen les drogues d’abús, els hipnòtics sedants i els edulcorants en aigües ambientals i en llots de depuradora. Per al desenvolupament d’aquests mètodes s’han emprat diferents tècniques d’extracció com ara l’extracció en fase sòlida (SPE) per al tractament de mostres aquoses i l’extracció amb líquids pressuritzats (PLE) per al tractament de mostres sòlides. La determinació s’ha dut a terme mitjançant cromatografia líquida acoblada a espectrometria de masses en tàndem (LC-MS/MS) amb un analitzador de masses triple quadrupol (QqQ).
Els diferents estudis inclosos en la present Tesi demostren les elevades capacitats que ofereixen tant les tècniques d’extracció com las técniques de determinació. El resultat final de la combinació d’aquestes tècniques són mètodes analítics altament sensibles, fet que és un requeriment per a la determinació dels contaminats d’interès emergent que normalment es troben a baixos nivells de concentració (ng/L o ng/g) en les mostres ambientals.
Els mètodes desenvolupats en la present Tesis Doctoral s’han aplicat per tal de determinar dogues d’abús, hipnòtics sedants i edulcorants en rius, aigües residuals i fangs de cinc estacions de depuració d’aigües residuals (EDARs) ubicades a Catalunya. A més a més, la presència d’aquests contaminats juntament amb productes d’ús personal van ser monitorizats durant un any en aquestes EDARs, on es van estimar altres aspectes ambientals com ara l’eliminació dels contaminats després del tractament aplicat a cada EDAR, el risc ambiental i la prevalença del consum de drogues d’abús a l’àrea geogràfica on es va realitzar l’estudi.Esta Tesis Doctoral se centra en el desarrollo de métodos analíticos para determinar tres grupos de contaminantes de interés emergente que incluyen drogas de abuso, hipnótico sedantes y edulcorantes en aguas ambientales y lodos de depuradora. Para el desarrollo de estos métodos se han utilizado diferentes técnicas de extracción como extracción en fase sólida (SPE) para el tratamiento de muestras líquidas y extracción con líquidos presurizados (PLE) para el tratamiento de muestras sólidas. La determinación se ha realizado por cromatografía de líquidos acoplada a espectrometría de masas en tandem (LC-MS/MS) con un analizador de masas de triple cuadrupolo (QqQ). Los diferentes estudios que engloba esta Tesis demuestran las elevadas capacidades que ofrecen tanto las técnicas de extracción como las de determinación usadas. El resultado final de la combinación de estas técnicas son métodos analíticos altamente sensibles, lo cual es un requerimiento para la determinación de los contaminantes de interés emergente que usualmente son encontrados a bajos niveles de concentración (ng/L o ng/g) en muestras ambientales. Los métodos desarrollados en esta Tesis Doctoral han sido aplicados para determinar los contaminantes en aguas de ríos, aguas residuales y fangos de cinco estaciones de depuración de agua residual (EDARs) ubicadas en Cataluña. Además la presencia de estos contaminantes incluyendo productos del cuidado personal fueron monitorizados durante 1 año en estas EDARs, donde se estimaron otros aspectos ambientales como la eliminación de los contaminantes después del tratamiento aplicado en cada EDAR, el riesgo ambiental y la prevalencia del consumo de las drogas de abuso en el área geográfica donde se realizó el estudio.
This Doctoral Thesis focuses on the development of analytical methods to determine three groups of emerging contaminants which include drugs of abuse, sedative hypnotic and sweeteners in environmental waters and sewage sludge. To develop these methods different extraction techniques have been used such as solid phase extraction (SPE) for water samples and pressurized liquid extraction (PLE) for sludge samples. The determination was performed by liquid chromatography coupled to tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) using a triple quadrupole (QqQ) as analyzer. The studies encompassed in this Thesis demonstrate the high capabilities offered by the extraction techniques and the determination techniques used. The final result of the combination of these techniques are highly sensitive analytical methods, which is a requirement for the determination of emerging contaminants that are usually found at low concentration levels (ng/L or ng/g) in environmental samples. The methods developed in this Thesis are applied to determine drugs of abuse, sedative hypnotic and sweeteners in rivers, wastewater and sludge of five sewage treatment plants (STPs) located in Catalonia. Moreover, the presence of these contaminants including personal care products were monitored for 1 year in these WWTPs, where other environmental aspects such as removing pollutants after the applied treatment in each WWTP, environmental risk and prevalence of drugs of abuse in the geographic area where the study was conducted.

The purpose of this essay is to investigate how the Swedish media framed the political party, the Swedish Democrats, two weeks prior to the election of parliament in 2014. This essay starts with the historical background of the political party, the Swedish Democrats, and continues with the theoretical framework for the essay. The theoretical framework consists of three theories: framing, media logic and media’s role in the democratic society. The essay’s main problem is presented as the question: What media image was there of the Swedish Democrats before the election of parliament in 2014? The main problem is answered by using a quantitative content analysis on the essay’s empirical material, 68 news articles from four Swedish daily newspapers. Results show that the Swedish Democrats have been framed negatively in the media prior to the election of parliament in 2014.

Syfte Syftet med denna uppsats är att tydliggöra samt klarlägga hur artister och teamen kring dessa arbetar för att bygga och bibehålla starka relationer mellan fan och artist. Fortsättningsvis vill vi även öka förståelsen kring hur fansen uppfattar denna typ av arbete för att upprätthålla relationen. Utifrån syftet har vi utvecklat följande forskningsfråga; - Vad präglar artistens och dennes medarbetares arbete med relationerna gentemot fansen? Metod Vi har i denna uppsats valt att arbeta utifrån en kvalitativ ansats för att kunna samla in relevant information från olika perspektiv och för att få en djupare förståelse för ämnet. Vi har intervjuat tio olika respondenter, både fans och inflytelserika personer inom musikbranschen. Dessa har genomförts face-to-face, via mail samt över Skype. Förutom intervjuerna har vi även analyserat litteratur, artiklar och onlinekällor. Slutsatser Uppsatsen sammanfattas i ett avslutande kapitel bestående av våra slutliga tankar och en kort sammanfattning av svaret till vår forskningsfråga. I detta kapitel presenterar vi att relationen mellan artist och fan behöver vara personlig för att en artist ska kunna skapa en varaktig lojal fanbase. Vi betonar även att en ständig och ihållande kommunikation mellan de två parterna är betydelsefull för att kunna bibehålla en lojal relation.

Denna uppsats behandlar hur representationen av ett samkönat par, Dorian Pavus och Iron Bull i dataspelet Dragon Age: Inquisition, orsakar stridigheter i spelets fandomgrupp. I uppsatsen analyseras hur medietexten representerar paret samt fansens reception av paret och deras sexualitet. Min studie visar att fansens debatter präglas av konflikter om representationen av queerhet i dataspelet. Flera av debattörernas argument har en prägel av moralpanik. Denna debatt analyseras teoretiskt utifrån representationsteori och queerteori. Slutsatsen är att fansens debatter riskerar att begränsa representationen av sexualitet i dataspel. Tyrimo aktualumas. Iš esmės pakitusi valstybės ekonominė sistema keičia vartotojų elgseną. Rinkos ekonomikoje gausu įvairių gamintojų, kurie, tarpusavyje konkuruodami, siekia patraukti vartotoją. Galimybė rinktis keičia vartotojų elgseną. Tokioje situacijoje vartotojas kartais pats nesuvokia, kodėl jis perka vienokias ar kitokias paslaugas.
Tyrimo problema: Kaip pažymi J. Stankevičienė (2004) vartotojų elgsena yra dinamiškas sociokultūrinis reiškinys, todėl šios problemos studijos, nepaisant atliktų tyrimų gausos, ne tik išlieka aktualiomis, bet jų aktualumas tik didėja. Net ir tie tyrimai, kurie atlikti išsivysčiusiose šalyse, dėl skirtingo sociokultūrinio konteksto nedaug gali padėti suprasti analogiškų vartotojų elgseną mažą gyvenimo rinkos sąlygomis patirtį turinčioje šalyje. Taigi darbe formuluojama problema ir tikslas ištirti vartotojų elgseną, yra reikšminga. Basically the varied state economical system changes the consumers’ behaviour. Within the market economy dominate various manufacturers those being competitive in regard of each other are seeking to attract a consumer. An opportunity to choose changes consumer’s behaviour. In such situation a consumer sometimes doesn’t realise why he purchases items of some sort. Often his behaviour is influenced not only with various environmental factors but also with his personal assurances and values. The problem of the work. As certifies J. Stankevičienė (2004) the consumers’ behaviour is the dynamic social cultural appearance, therefore the studies of such problem regardless an abundance of the accomplished researches remain not only relevant but also their relevance is expanding gradually. Even those researches which were accomplished within the developed countries as concerns of social cultural context can little help while understanding the behaviour of analogous consumers within the countries having the diminutive life experience under the market circumstances. Hence the problem and goal formatted at work are important. In these latter years have appeared more scientific monographs, articles in Lithuanian language analysing the aspects of consumers’ behaviour, but this is still actual theoretical and practical problem. Este trabalho teve como objetivo geral explorar os multiletramentos através da escrita criativa para atingir os objetivos de aprendizagem de Língua Espanhola no Curso de Licenciatura em Letras – Línguas Adicionais com a elaboração e implementação de uma proposta pedagógica. Para isso, foi desenvolvida uma prática de pesquisa-ação na turma de primeiro semestre do curso, na Unipampa na disciplina de Fundamentos de Espanhol I. Essa prática teve como objetivos: verificar as práticas de multiletramentos, em Língua Espanhola, dos alunos da graduação; desenvolver a escrita criativa como ferramenta de incentivo à aprendizagem de língua adicional a partir do universo cultural dos alunos; verificar se a produção de textos a partir dos multiletramentos possibilitou a aprendizagem da língua e avaliar se a proposta pedagógica atingiu os objetivos de aprendizagem para reformular a proposta a partir deste resultado. Como respaldo teórico abordo os multiletramentos sob a perspectiva de Rojo (2009, 2012); trago a questão do ensino de Línguas Adicionais a partir de Leffa e Irala (2014), Schlatter e Garcez (2012), Paz (2009). Problematizo a visão de aprendizagem com base em Dewey (1959), Hattie (2017), Almeida Filho (2008), Viana (1990) e Lemke (2010). Discorro sobre a formação de professores a partir de Almeida filho (1992) e Leffa (2008, 2009). Exponho a escrita criativa partindo de Plácido (2015), Leitão (2008), Casal (1999) para chegar ao gênero fanfics, baseada em Cavalcanti (2010), Rocha (2009), Fontenele (2015), Barros (2009), e por fim trago a questão da correção considerando Cassany (2007). A partir da aplicação do produto elaborado para esta pesquisa-ação, uma unidade didática como projeto de multiletramentos, analisei os dados gerados em gravações em áudio e vídeo, diários reflexivos, fotos, interações online e os textos produzidos pelos alunos com a finalidade de verificar se os objetivos iniciais foram atingidos. Ao final, percebi que a autonomia, a colaboração e o interesse dos alunos são fundamentais para que o trabalho ocorra como o planejado e que tínhamos muitas demandas para pouco tempo de intervenção. Ao verificar as práticas de multiletramentos, em Língua Espanhola, dos alunos da graduação, foi possível perceber o que eles já conheciam para então desenvolver a escrita criativa como ferramenta de incentivo à aprendizagem de língua adicional a partir do universo cultural dos alunos. Concluí que o trabalho com as fanfics despertou o interesse dos alunos e verifiquei que a produção de textos a partir dos multiletramentos possibilitou a aprendizagem da língua. Por fim, avalio que a proposta pedagógica atingiu os objetivos de aprendizagem e reformulei a proposta a partir deste resultado. Algumas ações previstas e realizadas na aplicação do projeto revelaram a necessidade de aprofundamento na abordagem e execução, o que resultou em atividades extras na unidade didática.
Este trabajo tuvo como objetivo general explotar la multiliteracidad a través de la escritura creativa para alcanzar los objetivos de aprendizaje de lengua española en el Curso de Graduación en Letras - Lenguas Adicionales con la elaboración e implementación de una propuesta pedagógica. Para ello, se desarrolló una práctica de investigación-acción en la clase de primer semestre del curso, en la Unipampa en la asignatura de Fundamentos de Español I. Esta práctica tuvo como objetivos: verificar las prácticas de multiliteracidad, en lengua española, de los alumnos de la graduación; desarrollar la escritura creativa como herramienta de incentivo al aprendizaje de lengua adicional a partir del universo cultural de los alumnos; verificar si la producción de textos a partir de la multiliteracidad posibilitó el aprendizaje de la lengua y evaluar si la propuesta pedagógica alcanzó los objetivos de aprendizaje para reelaborarla a partir de este resultado. Al final percibí que la autonomía, la colaboración y el interés de los alumnos son fundamentales para que el trabajo ocurra como lo planeado y que teníamos muchas demandas para poco tiempo de intervención. Al verificar las prácticas de multiliteracidad, en lengua española, de los alumnos de la graduación, fue posible percibir lo que ellos ya conocían, para entonces desarrollar la escritura creativa como herramienta de incentivo al aprendizaje de lengua adicional a partir del universo cultural de los alumnos. Concluí que el trabajo con las fanfics despertó el interés de los alumnos y comprobé que la producción de textos a partir de la multiliteracidad posibilitó el aprendizaje de la lengua. Por último, evalúo que la propuesta pedagógica alcanzó los objetivos de aprendizaje y reelaboré la propuesta a partir de este resultado. Algunas acciones previstas y realizadas en la aplicación del proyecto revelaron la necesidad de profundizar el abordaje y la ejecución, lo que resultó en actividades extras en la unidad didáctica.

This thesis concerns a study undertaken on a railway vehicle cooling fan system. Several design modifications were proposed and tested in the laboratory in order to evaluate different noise control measures. The most effective noise control measure involving combining lots of different measures gave 7 dB(A) noise reduction. Furthermore a modification by replacing the axial fan by a radial fan can even reduce the radiated sound power by 10 dB(A). The transfer functions were also examined for a dipole source to acoustic pressure in the far field to evaluate the acoustic loading created by the cooling fan enclosure. One fan was taken out from the complete unit and mounted between two acoustic test chambers to measure the effect of various parameters on the acoustic source strength (power) under controlled conditions. To predict accurate data of radiated sound power for comparison with the experimental work, two models have been developed: one model using the Farassat formula for a rotating dipole and the other model based on a 3D acoustic-vortex model. The heat exchangers in the cooling unit can have a significant effect on sound emitted from a cooling fan. An acoustic model based on so called equivalent fluid model for an anisotropic medium was derived to evaluate the sound transmission and the absorption through a parallel plate type of heat exchanger.

The
performance requirements of turbofan engines demands a
stability and transient capability beyond that associated with
the
past generations of gas turbine engines. The axial flow fan
unit is most vulnerable to
loading limitations due to the
primary problems associated with the compression process, its
sensitivity to inlet distortion and the
difficulty to design
for an overall
optimum blade duty in a machine of wide
radial
blade
loading distribution. The development of mathematical
models with some
capability of predicting the stable operating
range of an axial flow fan has to overcome the
difficulties
associated with the
modelling of the radially distinct
flow
regions and their dynamic interaction. '
The current
investigation combined the available knowledge of
one-dimensional models (based on the
principles of conservation
of mass, linear momentum and
energy) with the assumptions of the
parallel compressor theory, in order to develop a linearized
system of equations for stability analysis (surge prediction).
The
stability conditions which emerged from this approach were
applied on the experimentally derived characteristics of a low
hub to
tip ratio split flow fan in a manner which involved the
modelling of the dynamic interaction of the inner and outer flow
region of the fan.
The
development of the governing equations was achieved by
applying one-dimensional flow analysis to the inner and outer
section of the fan. Their interaction was modelled on the
experimentally obtained radial movement of the splitter
streamline and the
discharge ,static pressure 'radial
distribution. The inner and outer region were treated as a
lumped volume element search operating on a local masflow
averaged total pressure rise characteristic and alternatively
acting in conjunction with a common nozzle and separate nozzles.
The experimental investigation was carried out on a low hub
totipratio two-stage split flow fan(with the facility of
independent bypass and core throttles)in order to examine the
localised and overall performance of such a fan(and the
staling processes involved)and to enable the application of
the stability analysis. The influence of reducing the distance
between the fan flow spliter and the last bladerowasal so

Tuberculosis (TB) is one of the deadliest infectious diseases of our time, with 1.4 million
deaths globally, recorded in 2010 (3800 deaths a day) by the World Health Organization
(WHO). Currently, South Africa ranks third on the 2011 list of 22 high-burden TB countries in
the world and it was estimated that each active-TB person could potentially infect 10–15
people annually. The WHO additionally reported that in the year 2009, 87% of all TB patients
worldwide were successfully treated, with a treatment success rate of 74% reported for
South Africa. Despite this however, non-adherence to anti-TB treatment is still a major
issue, due to it resulting in a global increased prevalence of drug resistant TB and
subsequently TB treatment failure. Treatment failure is thought to be caused by a number of
factors, however, it still remains largely misunderstood. One aspect of this, that isn't clearly
addressed in the literature, is the underlying variation in each patient, resulting in his/her
varying reaction to the drug regimen, and hence it’s varying efficacy from one patient to the
next. Furthermore, little is known about the underlying variation of the host to the primary TB
infection or response to the TB disease state, and how some patients have more effective
mechanisms for eliminating the infection, or recovering from the disease.
Considering this, a metabolomics research study using GC×GC-TOFMS was conducted, in
order to identify potential metabolite markers which may be used to better characterise the
underlining mechanisms associated with poor treatment outcomes (treatment failure).
The first aim was to evaluate the accuracy and efficiency of the methodology used, as well
as to determine the capability and accuracy of the analyst to perform these methods. In
order to evaluate the GCxGC-TOFMS analytical repeatability, one QC sample was extracted
and injected repeatedly (6 times) onto the GC×GC-TOFMS. Similarly, the analyst's
repeatability for performing the organic acid extraction and analyses was also determined,
using 10 identical QC samples, which were extracted and injected separately. CV values
were subsequently calculated from the collected and processed data as a measure of this.
Of all the compounds detected from the 6 QC sample repeats used for GCxGC-TOFMS
repeatability, 95.59% fell below a 50% CV value, and 93,7% of all the compounds analysed
for analyst repeatability had a CV < 50. Subsequently, using the above metabolomics approach, in addition to a wide variety of
univariate and multivariate statistical methods, two patient outcome groups were compared.
A sample group cured from TB after 6 months of treatment was compared vs a sample
group where treatment failed after the 6 month period. Using urine collected from these two
patient groups at various time points, the following metabolomics comparisons where made:
1) at time of diagnosis, before any anti-TB treatment was administrated, 2) during the course
of treatment, in order to determine any variance in these groups due to a varying response
to the anti-TB drugs, 3) over the duration of the entire 6 months treatment regimen, in order
to determine if differences exist between the two groups over time.
A clear natural differentiation between the cured and failed outcome groups were obtained at
time of diagnosis, and a total of 39 metabolites markers were subsequently identified. These
metabolites were classified according to their various origins, and included (1) those
associated with the presence of M. tuberculosis bacteria, (2) those resulting from an altered
host metabolism due to the TB infection, and (3) metabolites of various exogenous origins.
The detailed interpretation of these metabolites suggests that a possible underlying RCD or
some sort of mitochondrial dysfunction may be present in the treatment failure group, which
may also be induced through an external stimulus, such as alcohol consumption. We
hypothesise that this may possibly result in a far greater severity to M. tuberculosis infection
in this group, subsequently causing a reduced capacity for a successful treatment outcome,
also considering the critical role of the mitochondria in the metabolism of anti-TB drugs.
Furthermore, 20 metabolite markers were identified when comparing the two outcome
groups during the treatment phase of this metabolomics investigation. A vast majority of
these 20 metabolites were also identified as markers for time 0 (time of diagnosis).
Additionally, metabolites associated with anti-TB drug induced side effects, were also found
to be comparatively increased in the treatment failure group, indicative of more pronounced
liver damage, accompanied by metabolites characteristic of a MADD metabolite profile, due
to a deficient electron transport flavoprotein, confirming previous experiments done in rats.
These side effects have also previously been implicated as a major contributor of poor
treatment compliance, and ultimately treatment failure.
Lastly, 35 metabolite markers were identified by time dependent statistical analysis and
represented those metabolites best describing the variation between the treatment outcome groups over the entire study duration (from diagnosis, to week 26). This time dependent
statistical analysis identified markers, using an alternative statistical approach, and
confirmed previous findings and added in a better characterisation of treatment failure.
Considering the above, we successfully applied a metabolomics approach for identifying
metabolites which could ultimately aid in the prediction and monitoring of treatment
outcomes. This additionally led to a better understanding and or characterisation of the
phenomenon known as treatment failure, as well as the underlying mechanisms related to

De facto, é evidente a infinidade de aplicações que pode ter um robô manipulador montado em cima de uma plataforma móvel. Com este avanço tecnológico surgem problemas e desafios, como é o caso da precisão do gripper, localização do sistema, navegação/planeamento de trajetória, controlo e perceção, que estariam relativamente bem controlados num manipulador fixo. A presente dissertação insere-se no projeto Robonuc em que é pretendido o desenvolvimento de um sistema robótico integrado com um custo consideravelmente inferior aos já existentes no mercado. A instalação mecânica e elétrica do manipulador FANUC LR Mate 200iD na plataforma móvel Robuter II, ambos os recursos disponíveis no Laboratório de Automação e Robótica (LAR), foi a primeira tarefa a ser realizada. Seguiu-se o desenvolvimento de uma arquitetura de software modular, em ambiente Robot Operating System (ROS), que possibilitasse a comunicação entre todos os dispositivos do sistema, a interface com o utilizador e o controlo eficaz do manipulador. Ao nível do software, foi também resolvido o problema do controlo de I/O’s do manipulador - uma das limitações do ROS-FANUC - e ainda contornada a limitação cinemática da biblioteca MoveIt!. Para introduzir segurança no sistema, foram instalados sensores laser de varrimento para deteção da aproximação de pessoas e/ou objetos. Uma integração dos dados dos sensores na arquitetura de software, com vários níveis de alarme, permitiu a colaboração de humanos com o sistema robótico enquanto se realizam operações de manipulação. A fase de testes revelou-se essencial para a correção de alguns aspetos, como o controlo remoto das aplicações ou a parametrização da unidade de segurança. A realização de aplicações ilustrativas do sistema global demostrou que as metodologias adotadas no decorrer dos trabalhos foram as adequadas.
Mobile manipulation is becoming a front with more and more applications in the industrial environment and its future application in the domestic environment is already in progress. As a matter of fact, the plethora of applications that a robotic manipulator can have while mounted on the top of a mobile platform are evident. With this technological breakthrough, many problems and challenges arise, such as gripper precision, system localization, trajectory, navigation/planning, perception and control which would be relatively well controlled in a fixed manipulator. The present dissertation is a part of the Robonuc project in which the development of an integrated robotic system with a considerably lower cost relative to the market is pretended. Mechanical and electrical implementation of the FANUC LR Mate 200iD manipulator on the Robuter II mobile platform, both of which available in Laboratório de Automação e Robótica (LAR) was the first task to be accomplished. Afterwards, a modular software architecture was developed on the Robotic Operating System (ROS), which allows communication between all system devices, interface with the end user and efficient manipulator control. At a software level, the problem of the manipulator’s I/O control - which is one of the ROS-FANUC limitations - was solved. The kinematic limitation of MoveIt! library was also solved. To introduce system safety, laser range finder sensors were installed in order to detect the proximity of people and objects. The integration of sensor data with different alarm levels in the software architecture made it possible to collaborate with the robotic system during manipulation tasks. The testing phase was essential for the correction of some aspects, such as the remote control of applications or the setup of safety parameters. Illustrative applications were made to demonstrate that the adopted methodologies during this work were adequate.

Economical and environmental factors together with energy policies towards more efficient systemsare the driving force for the development of the vehicle industry. Significant changes have beenmade to fulfill new emissions legislation but the basic internal combustion vehicle architecture hasbeen kept. New emission treatment systems that increase the thermal loading of the cooling systemhad been added within the same package envelope as before, which means less space to place coolingfans and a greater need for airflow. Changes in the cooling system, namely the replacement of thehydraulic fan drive system by electrical fans is one of the energy efficient alternatives for severalcity buses under certain environments, like the ”typical red city buses”, well-known in the UnitedKingdom. In this thesis study, hydraulic fans are compared with electrical fans and a road-mapof the benefits and drawbacks of the two systems is developed, based on real traffic performanceperformance data and the results of existing simulations and tests. In addition, new simulations arepresented in order to find the most efficient design for the cooling system as well as a comparisonof these results with previous ones. This road map will be used later by Volvo-Buses Group as atool to better understand in which circumstances electrical fans can be beneficial, in terms of fuelconsumption, noise production, cooling performance, control of the fans and associated costs.

The Fan Assessment Numeration System (FANS) is an improved air velocity traverse method for measuring in situ fan performance. The FANS has been widely used, but variations of its test procedure are commonly employed to accommodate physical or operational barriers encountered in the field. This laboratory study evaluated the use of transitions to connect a 1.37m FANS unit to two smaller fans (1.22m and 0.91m diameter) and one 1.37m diameter fan. Tests were conducted with the FANS unit positioned on both intake and discharge sides of the fans. Three different transition angles (30o, 45o and 60o) and the use of no transition were evaluated. Discharge tests were also performed with no enclosed connection between FANS and fan housings. A different experiment was conducted for each fan size. Data was analyzed by comparing test results to the control with Dunnett’s procedure. Results showed significant differences as much as 5.3% ± 1.20% for intake treatments, 17.2% ± 3.04% for sealed discharge treatments and 37.1% ± 12.24% for discharge treatments with no enclosed connection. All transition angles produced similar fan test results. Differences between test results from the discharge and control treatments increased as differences between FANS and fan dimensions increased.

Esta pesquisa tem como objetivo analisar o papel da colaboração dentro da Atividade Social (LIBERALI, 2009, 2012): publicação no jornal da escola, e seu impacto no desenvolvimento da produção escrita colaborativa (LARRÉ, 2010), em língua inglesa, através do gênero (BAKHTIN, 2011; MARCUSCHI, 2008) fanfic (ficção criada por fã), uma escrita criativa que envolve a multimodalidade (ROJO, 2012, 2013,2015). As fanfics foram elaboradas por alunos da turma do 9º ano do Ensino Fundamental II do Colégio de Aplicação (CAp), uma escola da rede pública de ensino do Recife. Por trabalhar com Atividades Sociais, esta pesquisa tem o aporte teórico da Teoria da Atividade Sócio-Histórico-Cultural (TASHC) (VYGOTSKY,1920 -1934; LEONTIEV,1977; ENGESTRÖM, 1987,1999,2001,2002), a qual enfatiza que a prática não pode ser separada da teoria, e que atuamos no mundo em que vivemos de acordo com as necessidades que surgem no nosso cotidiano, neste caso, a necessidade dos alunos publicarem fanfics no jornal da escola utilizando a Língua Inglesa (LI). A não separação entre prática e teoria faz com que nosso estudo esteja inserido no contexto da Linguística Aplicada (MOITA LOPES, 2006; RAJAGOPALAN, 2003, 2006, 2013; PENNYCOOK, 2006; ROJO, 2006; DAMIANOVIC, 2005), pois os conteúdos escolares precisam fazer sentido e dialogar com o mundo em que vivem nossos alunos. Para discutir o papel da colaboração utilizamos como base metodológica a Pesquisa Crítica de Colaboração (PCCol) (MAGALHÃES, 2009, 2011, 2012), que possibilita que todos os participantes construam novos significados através da colaboração e da reflexão crítica, questionando não apenas suas ações, mas as dos outros envolvidos na Atividade Social l. O contexto colaborativo foi discutido a partir do Material Didático produzido pela professora-pesquisadora, analisado conforme as categorias enunciativas, discursivas e linguísticas (LIBERALI,2013), e das performances (HOLZMAN,2002,2010,2011) propostas nele, cujo foco era observar se os alunos atingiram os objetivos de cada etapa das atividades para, assim, conseguirem realizar adequadamente a produção escrita final da fanfic. Também foram analisadas as fanfics elaboradas pelo grupo-focal e, de que forma os comentários e sugestões dos alunos no contexto colaborativo e crítico influenciaram no desenvolvimento da produção escrita em LI. Os resultados encontrados apontam para a importância da criação de um contexto colaborativo e crítico através de Atividades Sociais nas referidas aulas, o que permite, a partir das contradições inerentes a tal contexto, que todos os envolvidos possam produzir novos conhecimentos e ir além de si mesmos.
The purpose of this study is to analyse the role of collaboration within the Social Activity (LIBERALI, 2009, 2012): publishing in a school paper, as well as its impact on the development of the collaborative writing production (LARRÉ, 2010), in English, through the genre (BAKHTIN, 2011; MARCUSCHI, 2008) fanfic (fiction written by fans), a creative writing which involves multimodality (ROJO, 2012, 2013, 2015). The fanfics were developed by ninth-grade students from Colégio de Aplicação (Cap) a public school in Recife. As a result of working with Social Activities, this study has its theoretical framework in the Cultural-Historical Activity Theory (CHAT) (VYGOTSKY,1920-1934; LEONTIEV,1977; ENGESTRÖM, 1987,1999,2001,2002), which emphasizes that practice cannot be separated from theory, and that we act in the world in which we live according to the demands emerged from our daily lives, in this case, the students’ need to publish fanfics in the school paper using the English language. Not having a separation between practice and theory results in the fact that our study is inserted in the scope of Applied Linguistics (MOITA LOPES, 2006; RAJAGOPALAN, 2003, 2006, 2013; PENNYCOOK, 2006; ROJO, 2006; DAMIANOVIC, 2005), hence the necessity for the school syllabus to make sense as well as relate to the world in which our students live. In order to discuss the role of collaboration we used the Critical Collaborative Research (PCCol) (MAGALHÃES, 2009, 2011, 2012) as a methodology foundation, which allows for all participants the conception of new meanings through collaboration and critical thinking, questioning not only their actions, but also of others involved in the social activity. The collaborative context was discussed based on the Coursework Material designed by the teacher-researcher, analysed in conformity with the enunciative, discursive and linguistic categories (LIBERALI,2013), along with the performances (HOLZMAN,2002, 2010, 2014) proposed in it, the focus of which was to observe if the students had achieved the goals of each stage of the activities so as to be able to adequately accomplish the final written production of the fanfic.The fanfics produced by the target-group were also analysed, and, how the comments and recommendations made by the students in the collaborative and critical context affected the development of their written production in the English language. The results provide support for the importance of creating a critical and collaborative context through Social Activities in English lessons, which allows from the contradictions inherit to such context, that all the ones involved may construct new meanings and excel themselves.

Cette thèse porte sur les processus d’interprétations collectifs dans les communautés de fans de stars musicales. Elle vise à cerner par quels mécanismes émerge une sous-culture de consommation autour de la star. Après avoir rendu compte du concept de fan dans la littérature, nous déployons un projet de recherche basé sur une épistémologie constructiviste et sur une démarche ethnographique multisite, comparative et itérative, qui consiste en l’immersion participante dans quatre communautés de fans : Tokio Hotel, Johnny Hallyday, Michael Jackson et Lady Gaga. Notre recherche propose un cheminement en trois étapes. Tout d’abord, l’interactionnisme symbolique nous permet de comprendre selon quelles structures sociales s’organise le processus d’interprétation collectif dans un fandom. Ensuite, la Reader Response Theory nous sert à affiner notre théorie par la compréhension des schismes survenant dans la construction de l’imaginaire fan. Et enfin, la méthode mythocritique nous aide à développer une réflexion sur les résurgences de la pensée mythique dans les sous-cultures fans que nous avons étudiées. Ces résultats de recherche en trois temps nous permettent de conclure sur une mise en perspective pratique à propos du marketing des communautésThis thesis questions collective interpretative process in fan communities of musical stars. Its aim is to outline the mechanisms by which a subculture of consumption springs up around a star. We start our inquiry by questioning the literature about fans and defining our research project. Our fieldwork can be described as based on a constructivist epistemology and on a multisited, comparative and iterative ethnography. This ethnography is about a participant observation within four fan communities: those of Tokio Hotel, Johnny Hallyday, Michael Jackson and Lady Gaga. Our research results are structured according to three steps. First, symbolic interactionism allowed us to understand the social structures by which emerges the collective interpretative process in a musical fandom. Then, Reader Response Theory helped us to refine our theory by understanding the schisms that divide fans while they collectively develop their imaginary world. Finally, the mythocritic method helped us to develop our reflection about resurgence of mythical thought in the fan subcultures we studied. These research results allowed us to close our thesis with a discussion on community management and marketing

Abstract Most companies of small trade entity do not accept credit card but only cashes for payment. The e-commerce company do accepts the credit card for payment, but the expenditure of the service charge increases the operating cost. Electronic cash cards coexist with the credit card in one card, there is district on markets that separates on different trade field. The characteristic and development niche in the future, this research will probe into the acceptable consumption amount of consumer''s electronic cash cards and the facts that effects the willing of using it, and to set up the savings card consumer behavior of electronic cash and manage the tactics. This research adopts the equation way of the linear structural equation model carry on the real example and analyse, its result is as follows: 1.Consumers'' attitude of using, receive the perceived usefully apparently, the perceived ease of use, and perceived risk three literary composition surface influence, and then to influence and use the behavior intention. 2.Interfere testing with such parameters as the age, income, sex, use experience, find that does not need the painstaking district to propose the combining electronic payment system of the orientation through using the ethnicity, consumers look at different occasions and use, adopt different mechanisms of paying the bill. 3.The issuing industry person should improve consumption procedure efficiency, reduce and study the threshold, building and constructing the integrated environment, the person who makes other relevant family property would like to join and reach the large-scale production as quickly as possible voluntarily. Grind and plan to protect the mechanism in advance and remedy serving afterwards, strengthen consumers to the electronic cash cards through the marketing tool impressions, influence consumer''s real behavior intention.

Factoring is a technique of logic minimization to represent a Boolean function in a equivalent function with minimum literals. When realizing the circuit, a function represented in compact form has minimum area. Some Boolean functions even have equivalent forms which each variable appears exactly once in factored functions, which are known as fanout-free functions. John P. Hayes had devised an algorithm to recognize fanout-free functions. We propose a property and some e±cient ways to accelerate this algorithm. With our improvements, execution time of this algorithm are more competitive with other state-of-the-art methods.

ABSTRACT How to express one’s concerns through the creation dominates the thinking process of a creator. This series of glue paintings, “The Reincarnation,” originates from the creator’s association with the characteristics of the material, which shows a close affinity to that of rocks. Furthermore, “The Reincarnation” attempts to integrate fish with lotus, the two subject matters appearing quite often in Oriental paintings, in various forms to indicate life and death. The creation contains two parts: the ocean and the flowers. Fish as the symbol of the inception of life illustrates the life-bearing characteristic of the ocean, which not only breeds fish but also preserves fish’s life after death in the form of fish fossils. Lotus as the corresponding symbol of fish growing in puddles on land manifests the concept of the reincarnation by adopting Buddhist attitude towards life – the withering and blooming of flowers. Abstract During successive dynasties, the circulation of ancient books, in the form of transcripts, was often confronted with wrongly copying or omitting the characters or adding meanings and characters that were not in the original version, all of which resulted in wrong content or text structure reversal. Therefore, emendation is absolutely indispensable. First, verification shall be done for any inconsistency in the text before undergoing analytic demonstration to prove that the particular passage refers to the genuine part of the text, thus endorsing the sustainable retention of ancient books. Ren Fang's "Shuyiji (Tales of Strange Matters)" is a mysterious and enchanting book and it was a real pity as previously, there had been no one with adequate expertise to emend this book. Therefore, this book will be used as a theme for verification in this study. This paper emends Ren Fang's complete one-volume edition and the two-volume edition of "Shuyiji (Tales of Strange Matters)". This paper uses two of the "four methods of collation" to emend Ren Fang's "Shuyiji (Tales of Strange Matters)", namely the textual comparison method (from another book) and the corroboration method of the preceding and later paragraphs (of the same book). This paper completes the emendation of Ren Fang's "Shuyiji (Tales of Strange Matters)" and formulates the source table based on the contents of the emendation. Abstract The Chinese free verse poetry, New Poetry, was born from May-Fourth movement, which was a glorious era under the background of New Culture movement mainly led by Hu-Shih. And the thoughts of May-Fourth made solid foundation for modern literature in later several decades. The prosperous works of modern literature rely on the efforts of the predecessors in May-Fourth era, one of the predecessors is a pupil of Hu-Shih named Hsu-Fang, who had made great contribution and significance in the early development of New Poetry. However, due to some reasons, she is relatively unknown by people. It is not until her works reappear seventy years later that recalls people’s memories about Hsu-Fang. The name which we should not forget, nevertheless, still have not obtained the proper and deserved status in Chinese literature history. By the reappearance of “Hsu-Fang Poerty Anathology”, this essay will discuss and analyze from several directions below from feminism, to give Hsu-Fang the proper status in Chinese literature history. 1. The chapter of Hsu-Fang’s brief biography and conception of creation: We will have basic understanding about Hsu-Fang through her biography and introductions of works, then further discuss the unique conception of creation of the poetess, and the conception is founded on the bountiful achievements of predecessors in the May- fourth era. 2. The chapter of themes of Hsu-Fang’s new poerty: The themes of Hsu-Fang’s poems will be categorized into five different groups, including love, inner monologue, life and environment observation, concern of May-Fourth era and the yearning for family and friends in hometown. The five themes will be discussed respectively in order to explore and feel the deep content of her poems. 3. the chapter of personal and voice narration: By invoking the theories of narration, psychology and feminism, I will analyze the self image she had constructed, furthermore, the writing strategies she used and tried to arouse response with readers from the two dimensions of personal and voice narration.

Duan Fang (1861-1911) was a government official, notable collector in the late Qing dynasty. His collection includes bronzes, steles, rubbings, calligraphies, paintings, jades, and pottery. In the first decade of the twentieth century, Duan Fang was politically and diplomatically active and gained broad recognition in China, Japan and the West. He was one of the most attractive collectors for foreign scholars and collectors in his time. Up to now, Duan Fang’s painting collection is not thoroughly studied. Most papers related to Duan Fang’s collection focused more on the bronzes, steles and their rubbings, while only limited attention has been paid to his painting collection. The collector also left an unpublished catalogue Ren-yin Xiao-Xia Lu which is essential to our understanding to his painting collection. The primary questions of this thesis are: How Duan Fang established his painting collection? And, what are the features of Duan Fang’s collection? The first chapter explores the career and the main collecting activities of Duan Fang. Duan Fang enjoyed his early days before 1901 in Peking and had close association with the collector-connoisseurs and scholars there. After 1901, he held the post of the governor of Hubei province. With the help of scholars and officials close to him, Duan Fang assembled a large number of paintings and calligraphies during 1901 to 1911. The works he collected were partially from the former collectors of Tongzhi (1861-1874) and Guangxu (1875-1908) reigns, and partially from the Qing imperial collection. In the Second chapter three publications related to Duan Fang’s painting collection in the early twentieth century China and Japan are discussed. The first is the unpublished catalogue Ren yin xiao xia Lu which was edited by the Qing scholar Miu Quan-sun (1844-1919) during the period 1907 to 1909. By examining the chapters and content in Ren yin xiao xia Lu, we comprehend that it was edited with a traditional manner. And at least 344 pieces of calligraphies and paintings in Duan Fang’s collection were recorded. In addition to the literal content in traditional catalogue, some pictorial records of Duan Fang’s painting collection in the other two journals Specimens of Old Chinese Pictorial Art (Zhong guo ming hua ji) and Kokka are analyzed. The third and fourth chapters focus on several paintings attributed to the Six dynasty (220-589) to the Northern Song dynasty (960-1127) in Ren-yin Xiao-Xia Lu. The discussions cover the editors’ comments on works, related reports and purchasing details on Duan Fang’s collection. The result show that questionable paintings and masterpieces were all recorded in the catalogue. In summary, Duan Fang’s painting collection is far more complicate then we used to acknowledge.

The thesis is based on the works of the refugee student, Chang Fang. It interprets the meaning and value of landscape in literature, local writing, and the way to write places by means of the author’s life experience and formation of “sense of place”. The thesis consists of five chapters. The first and last chapter aims at introduction and conclusion. Besides, there are three purposes from chapter two to four: (1) discussion on Chang Fang’s background, literary style, historical writing and sorrow of Penghu case in his works, (2) reproduction of the interaction between the author and Penghu, and (3) reconstruction of “sense of place” in geographical writing. His literary works were analyzed with textual analysis, and further proved the arguments through human geography. It is concluded that Chang Fang had a clear historic mission of writing attitude. He used his personal background of a refugee student in Shan tung and a “lone ranger” as basis, and showed the involuntary struggle and pain of this generation in his writing. During the process of writing history, he linked “place” to his writing. By creating a “sense of place”, he reconstructed his identity and cherished those forgotten events and memories.

Research report for Masters degree.2005Newspapers are operating in a changing media environment where commercial pressures have in some cases diluted the information, education and publicity functions of traditional journalism. This research report looks at strategies to attract advertising at publications and the impact of these strategies on journalistic operating approaches, media organisation and culture as well as certain aspects of content, with specific reference to the personal finance magazine Geld, which is published as part of the Afrikaans Sunday newspaper Rapport. The research question is framed in the context of a concern in media studies and the South African media publishing environment about increasing commercialisation and its effect on the role of journalism in society. I employed the research methods of content analysis, quantitative and qualitative, and in-depth interviews to explore the subject.
