Abstract (sommario):
This thesis investigates the utility of classification systems of domestic violent men and the need to explore patterns of family violence from a more holistic, family focused perspective. Part I considers the classification of men who abuse their female partner. A literature review is presented which provides support for the Holtzworth-Munroe and Stuart (1994) three fold typology of domestic violent men. However, the research is criticised for its narrow focus on the offender and three hypothetical patterns of family violence are presented. Following the review, a classification system of 90 men who murdered their female partner was constructed. The overlap of intimate partner violence with child maltreatment is demonstrated, highlighting the need for a holistic approach to family violence. Part II extends the use of classification systems to explore the co-occurrence of intimate partner violence and child maltreatment within the family, classifying family violence from a more holistic perspective. One hundred and five child maltreatment cases were examined retrospectively. The first study explored and demonstrated characteristic differences between parents who maltreated their child and each other in comparison with parents who perpetrated child maltreatment only. The second study provided evidence for the hypothesised patterns of family violence. This research contributes to the risk assessment literature, in furthering the understanding of violent parents and families. Part III extends the holistic approach to family violence to incorporate the effects that family members can exert upon one another across generations. A mediational analysis of the intergenerational cycle of child maltreatment is presented, using a prospective sample of 4,351 families with newborn children. The presence of three significant risk factors and poor parenting were found to mediate the intergenerational cycle. Additionally, factors of financial solvency and social support were found to playa protective role. A conceptual hierarchical model that considers risk and protective factors in tum is proposed as a method to assess families for potential of child maltreatment. The thesis demonstrates the need for a holistic approach to family violence. The theoretical and practical implications of this research for professionals working with families are discussed.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Up until the 1980s, the police often reluctantly intervened in domestic disputes. However, from the mid 1980s onwards, the introduction of pro-arrest family violence policies throughout the U.S., the U.K., and New Zealand, signalled a significant shift in police practices. It was hoped that the adoption of these policies would help improve the police response to family violence, and it was anticipated that police behaviour would consequently change. Unfortunately, the implementation of these policies has been fraught with difficulties, and they have often not translated easily into practice, or resulted in the intended changes. The current study, which was conducted in Christchurch in 2004, sought to understand how a pro-arrest policy was implemented at the local level. Drawing on a symbolic interactionist approach, and utilising Lipksy's (1980) street-level bureaucracy theory, this research focuses on a number of issues, including the application of the pro-arrest policy at the street-level, and its associated problems, and the legitimate/illegitimate exercise of discretion. This study has found evidence of significant practical problems with the implementation of the pro-arrest policy, which are similar to those that have been reported overseas.

Abstract (sommario):
This commentary outlines how my published works have contributed to knowledge on violence against black and minority ethnic (BME) or minority women in the UK, particularly in relation to domestic violence, forced marriage and so called 'honour' based violence (HBV). They help to define and enhance our understanding of these issues. In addition, they have critiqued multiculturalism and influenced, advocated and developed the former Home Office Minister, Mike O'Brien's concept of 'mature multiculturalism' (Parliamentary Debates, 1999; also cited in Home Office, 2000:10), and utilised the theoretical framework of intersectionality (Crenshaw, 1989 and 1991) to address these problems. I have also located my works within the framework of violence against women and girls (VAWG), secularism, equalities and human rights. My publications have reflected upon and influenced policy, practice and research, and as such, contributed to documenting the history and achievements of black feminism.

Fitzmaurice, Elizabeth. "The role of empathy in family violence". Thesis, University of Birmingham, 2015. http://etheses.bham.ac.uk//id/eprint/6334/.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
This thesis explores the role of empathy in family violence, specifically child maltreatment (CM) and intimate partner violence (IPV). Chapter 1 introduces the construct of empathy, its development and relevance to violence. Chapter 2 then explores the relationship between empathy and CM in a systematic literature review of 17 studies. Results found that maltreating parents demonstrate significantly lower empathic capacity and that this relationship is stronger for cognitive than affective empathy. Chapter 3 presents a critical analysis of the Interpersonal Reactivity Index (IRI; Davis, 1980) demonstrating that the measure has good reliability, validity and a range of normative data. Limitations of the measure include the validity of the Fantasy subscale and it being a questionnaire-based assessment. Chapter 4 presents a research report exploring the presence of empathy and emotional recognition skills in IPV (n=30), violent (n=20) and non-violent (n=20) offenders. Results found that IPV participants were more likely than NV offenders to interpret fearful faces as sad. Only the IRI personal distress scale (PD) showed a significant relationship with emotion recognition. The thesis conclusions are presented in Chapter 5 which identifies that empathy plays a role in family violence, although its influence in CM and IPV appears to be different.

Abstract (sommario):
This review paper investigated the effects of violence by people with mental health problems. It briefly considered the link between mental illness and violence, before reviewing the literature on the targets of violence from people with mental health problems, concurrently addressing methodological limitations. Family members and/or caregivers are often the victims of violent behaviour from individuals with mental health problems. The effects of this violence were reviewed, integrating findings from the literature on the effects of violent crime on individuals, the effects of domestic violence and the family burden literature. The conclusions drawn referred to the likely individual mental health needs of intrafamilial victims of violence and the possible impact of violence on ongoing familial relationships, whilst highlighting recommendations for future research.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Family violence and divorce can have influential effects on marital expectations. The present study analyzes the effects of gender, family violence, and divorce on marital expectations. Participants were 293 students enrolled in an introductory psychology course at a southeastern university. The mean age of the participants was 19.67 with 62.5 % being female and 37.5% being male. Participants completed the Conflict Tactics Scale to assess the presence of violence in the participant’s family of origin. Participants were also assessed on their parent’s marital status and, if applicable, their age at the time of divorce. This information was gathered via a demographic questionnaire in order to group participants into intact and non-intact groups based on their family of origin data. Participants also completed the Marriage Expectation Scale, which assesses future marital expectations by mean scores. A participant’s score may indicate pessimistic, realistic, or idealistic marital expectations. Results did not indicate that family violence or divorce had an effect on the participant’s marital expectations. Results did indicate statistically significant findings that revealed that men and women differed on marital expectations. Critiques of the present study as well as implications for future research are discussed.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Our research focuses on the authorship of perpetrators of domestic violence. Few studies have been devoted to this topic. The protocol used is multi-methodological: it revolves around a double perspective of authorship: quantitative and qualitative. Fatherhood is studied from the angle of father involvement in order to quantify parental activity according to various dimensions. The feeling of parental educational competence, a significant determinant of father involvement, is also assessed. The following determinants: the transition from conjugality to fatherhood, co-parenting and the relationship model to the father during childhood are understood during the qualitative approach. This will also help to identify the perception of paternity and parenting of participants. Our sample consists of 84 fathers: 42 fathers perpetrating domestic violence and 42 non-violent fathers. Two questionnaires are used: one on self-assessment of parenting skills and another on father involvement. A semi-structured interview is then offered. The results reveal that fathers who commit domestic violence have a lower father involvement than other fathers. The feeling of parental competence is not at the origin of this result because no difference between the two groups of father is found. The speech of fathers who are perpetrators of conjugal violence highlights a difficult perinatal phase, a parental role, access to authority, a conflicting co-parenting: a suffering paternity linked to a traumatic experience of intra-family violence during childhood

Abstract (sommario):
Domestic violence is recognized as the most entrenched and pervasive form of violence in society today. It is also one of the most serious social problems facing our communities, with enormous costs both to individuals and to society. Male Violence against female partners is a widespread practice and recognition of this fact is occurring. Women are most at risk of murder inside their own homes: most female homicide victims die at the hands of their male partner, usually after a history of domestic violence. The impact of the violence results in psychological and physical trauma for many families. Violence is generally seen as a manifestation of patriarchal values of male supremacy involving factors such as ownership, of property, power and control, female subordination, and the institution of marriage and the family. Male violence relates to gender inequity. Thus it is a political issue. It is not only women who are traumatized by the violence. Children do not only observe their parents' conflict, there is increasing evidence that the abuse of children is endemic in Australia.

Gregg, Lisa. "Collaboration in family violence intervention: A process evaluation of the hamilton Family Safety Team". The University of Waikato, 2007. http://hdl.handle.net/10289/2520.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
The Family Safety Team (FST) is a collaborative intervention developed to address family violence in New Zealand. Interagency collaborations are effective at addressing the social supports for battery, improving the systems and responses of agencies that address battery, and improving cohesion and consistency across agencies. The FST has a particular focus on justice system agencies. The purpose of this research was to evaluate the Hamilton FST. The research was conducted using in-depth interviews with FST members and others directly involved with the project, archival research using police family violence files, observation of FST meetings, and a focus group with battered women. The evaluation was constructed around four aims: to identify any barriers to establishing the FST, to assess the strengths and weaknesses of the Hamilton FST, to determine the adequacy of the FST structure, and to assess the extent to which the FST has improved the ability of agencies to enhance the safety and autonomy of battered women and hold offenders accountable. An overall finding of this evaluation was that people are feeling very positive about the Hamilton FST. The evaluation found that the FST has increased contact and communication between community and government agencies, and there was improvement in each agency's awareness of the policies, processes and protocols of other agencies in the FST. The evaluation found some limitations in the amount of monitoring and measurable outcomes from the FST, but this was understandable considering the infancy of the project and the time taken for members to understand their roles and the function of the FST. However, there were some positive developments in police responsiveness: an improved police attitude towards family violence cases, and an increase in cases coded as family violence. An important finding of this evaluation was that the Hamilton FST is functioning as a genuine collaboration. This seemed to be due to: mutual respect and an equal distribution of power among FST members, trusted working relationships, recognising each member for their area of expertise, and the role of the coordinator. There are, however, some limitations of the FST model that FST members need to acknowledge.

Abstract (sommario):
This paper is a reflection on my experience within the Judiciary since 2005 with children and adolescents subjected to various forms of family violence, starting from questions about the practice and ways of dealing with the everyday demands for care, prevention, and resolution of cases involving neglect, abuse, sexual abuse and other forms of violence. Some authors of psychoanalysis as Freud, Ferenczi and Winnicott, as well as contemporary researchers in the field of family violence and its impact on the lives of children and adolescents in the city of Rio de Janeiro provided the basis for theoretical approach. With regard to the practice, some fragments taken from cases are presented in order to illustrate what we understand to be a form of psychological work in the field of the Judiciary, trying to reflect on ways of relationship between parents / guardians and their children, as well as pointing to the possibility of developing new ways of experiencing these relations .

Abstract (sommario):
The boundaries of victimhood have received increasing attention in criminology, particularly considering the recent proliferation in 'trauma talk' or 'trauma creep'. Noting the connections between victims and trauma, there is now increasing recognition of the impact of victimisation, not only on individuals, but upon families, communities and cultures with its effects extending across time, place and person. Following David Garland's assertion of the 'return of the victim' 15 years ago, the interests of victims have moved to centre stage of the criminal justice system with the experiences of some taken to be representative of others. While this has encouraged an appreciation of the extent of suffering in victimisation, it is easy to understand how we might 'lose sight of the individual victim'. This research presents a qualitative study of the phenomenon of bereaved family activism. Findings presented in this thesis are based upon 15 in-depth interviews and participant observations with Mothers Against Violence: a Manchester-based charity that emerged in response to an intense period of gun violence and ensuing community outcry in the 1990s. The aim of this thesis was to explore how victims have confronted and mobilised their experiences of lethal violence to promote acknowledgment and prompt recognition. By refocusing on the individual and foregrounding the victim, this thesis asked how those involved understand, make sense of and give value to their experience in light of their role in Mothers Against Violence. Data collected was analysed through thematic analysis, remembering the embedded nature of such stories in cultural, historical and biographical contexts, communities and the research exchange. Findings are presented as a way of following the stories of individuals to the moment of collective action. The primary contributions of this thesis can be summarised under the following headings; firstly, applications of 'trauma' in victimology; secondly, understanding victim movements such as Mothers Against Violence as spaces for emotional, social and practical learning; thirdly, conceptualising victimisation as one moment in a series of 'turning points'; and fourthly, the role of stories in prompting recognition, encouraging identification and assembling communities.

Abstract (sommario):
Using a phenomenological approach, this study, "Killing Ostriches" sought to investigate the experience of violence in the home of a small group of young women living in the northern suburbs of Perth. Seven young women between the ages of 17-26 took part in the study. Five of these young women claimed to have experienced violence in their family of origin and the: remaining two, introduced for triangulation purposes, claimed not to have done so. The study sought, not only to explore the lived experience of violence in the home for these young women, but to also investigate their experience of youth work practice. Accounts of family violence provided indicate the significance and meaning of family violence for participants. What the study was not able to do is to provide accounts of aspects of youth work practice perceived as beneficial or detrimental by the young women involved in the study as none of them were aware of the availability of youth workers. They were unaware of other supports available to them and were also scared that if anyone found out, their situation would become intolerable. Each of these women chose not to disclose to anyone outside their immediate environment. For some of these young women I was the first person to whom they had disclosed much of their story. The study provides a better understanding of why it is that young women who have experienced violence in their family of origin do not disclose to others who might be in a position to support them and possibly stop the violence. The young women in this study were isolated from their peers and any support mechanisms that might have been available to them. The study, therefore, provides further insight into why it is that young women living in a violent environment choose to remain silent thereby maintaining the isolation associated with family violence. What is clear is that young women who have experienced violence, no matter what form that violence might have taken or where it is placed on the continuum of violence, have a need to discuss their experience with an individual they feel confident will support them according to their needs. What is also clear is that these particular young women were not aware of anyone who might fill this role. The literature shows the importance of identifying at least one attachment figure as early as possible in life, with whom a secure attachment may be developed. The women in this study have greater awareness of the issues involved in family violence than do many youth workers and other professionals to whom they might realistically go for help. What this study has shown is that there is need for further research based on the needs and experience of women, such as those involved in this study, to effectively answer the original research subquestion relating to youth work practice. It also suggests that youth work practioners should be involved in such research.
