Abstract (sommario):
Phosphorus (P) is an important pollutant of concern in wastewater that causes eutrophication and algal blooms in water body. On the other hand, P is a valuable natural resource for agricultural and industrial use. With the rapid depletion of mineral phosphorus on earth, there is a need to recover phosphorus from wastewater. In this study, a new chemical and biological process facilitated with iron dosing has been developed for P removal and recovery during wastewater treatment. The system consists of a main stream identical to the conventional activated sludge process in an aerobic sequencing batch reactor (SBR) for P removal and a side stream of sludge recirculation through an anaerobic SBR (AnSBR) for P release and recovery from the P-rich sludge. In the aerobic SBR treating a synthetic domestic wastewater, Fe(III) (FeCl3) was dosed to remove P by precipitation and adsorption. Fe(III) dosing at a Fe/P molar ratio of 1.5:1 could reduce the P concentration from more than 10 mg/L to below 1 mg/L in the final effluent. Compared to other dosing periods, dosing Fe(III) right before the SBR settling could achieve the best result in sludge flocculation and P removal. Meanwhile, organic removal was well maintained as 90% of the chemical oxygen demand (COD) was degraded in the aerobic SBR. In the AnSBR, phosphate precipitated with ferric iron in the sludge was released owing to microbial Fe(III) reduction, and a positive correlation was found between the phosphate and ferrous iron concentrations in the sludge suspension. Chemical tests showed that significant P release from Fe(III)-P occurred only if the acidic condition and the reducing condition were combined. For the AnSBR sludge, a higher organic loading, lower pH and higher biomass concentration resulted in a higher level of Fe(III) reduction and P release. Organic acidogenesis prevailed in the reactor and lowered the pH to ~4.5, which facilitated the P release from the solid phase into the liquid phase. With a solids retention time (SRT) of 10 days, the anaerobic supernatant contained a phosphate concentration of up to 70 mg/L, while the settled sludge was returned to the aerobic SBR. The phosphate could be readily recovered from the supernatant with Fe-induced precipitation by aeration and pH adjustment, and the overall P recovery could be achieved at about 70%. In addition to the treatment performance, the speciation of P in the aerobic sludge and the anaerobic sludge also was investigated. A significant change in the immediately available P and the redox-sensitive P was found in the sludge through the aerobic-anaerobic cycle. Such chemical transformation is believed to be crucial to the P removal and recovery during the wastewater treatment process.

Abstract (sommario):
In order to be relevant, all theology must relate to context. This study is an example of the complexities encountered in the actual practice of contextualization. I apply and evaluate theoretical tools, and give explicit account of the practicalities and tensions arising in the process that I initiated as a cultural outsider. The research is conducted with reflexivity by which I uncover hidden assumptions that influenced the contextualization process and my interpretation of the collected data. I examine the notion of ‘sin’ in the Kongo culture and evaluate it through the lens of the OT understanding of ‘sin’. The project was undertaken with participation groups in Brazzaville and revealed that in the Kongo context, the place of the kanda (community) was a key element, while Nzambi (God) was strikingly absent from the discussion of ‘sin’. The main conclusions I draw from this practical theology research are twofold. 1) Regarding contextualization: In academic research theological and social studies are often divided into two different fields. The project reveals that the theological and the social disciplines are intrinsically connected which requires contextualization to be an interdisciplinary undertaking. Critical self-reflexivity regarding the cultural background of the researcher and the role she takes in the process is equally important as giving the cultural insiders a voice; contextualization is most fruitful when it is done by cultural insiders and outsiders together. 2) Regarding the understanding of ‘sin’: In the Kongo context, ‘sin’ is understood as any act that breaks the harmony of the community, allowing any kind of evil to enter it. This understanding needs to be transformed by the biblical view of ‘sin’ as always being committed before God, the creator of the world and the one to whom all human beings owe their life. The rich imagery for ‘sin’ in the OT cannot be captured by the one Kongo word disumu; a wider vocabulary must be developed.

A significant amount of time and effort has to go into teaching students. It is no art when lecturers simply read from a text book. The objective of this study was to determine the teaching methods that students at the Hotel School, Central University of Technology, Free State, consider as most effective to support learning. All first-year students (N=73) enrolled for the National Diploma: Hospitality Management were targeted to participate in the survey. A mixedmethod study design was followed, and a questionnaire consisting of closedand open-ended questions was developed for data collection. Closed-ended questions were rated on a five-point Likert scale, while answers to open-ended questions were analysed to determine trends. Results showed that lecturers used a variety of teaching methods. The lecture teaching method was rated best by 49% of students followed by the group discussion method which was rated as second best (19%). Case studies and brainstorming were the least-preferred methods (4% and 0% respectively). Lecturers should ensure that maximum information is transferred through the teaching methods that most appeal to students. The focus should be on enabling students to practically apply the lessons taught in everyday life.

Abstract (sommario):
The aim of this research is, “to investigate how the sports design process can be used to improve inclusive design practice”. Sports design (or sports engineering) is the design of sports equipment and/or products that support the athlete (or user) in improving their overall sporting performance (Jenkins, et al., 2010) and (Muller, et al., 2007). In sport, the equipment and the athlete must work together to facilitate sporting performance. Despite limited work being undertaken into the sports design process, sports design is evidently highly user centred. However, there is no design process model that captures the characteristics of sports design as a whole (from project initiation to project sign-off).This research captures the sports design process as a whole, using an iterative process of investigation, data collection, development, evaluation and validation, involving industry designers and sports design students. The outcome and contribution to knowledge is the first design process model to capture the sports design process as a whole. The characteristics of sports design captured in the model include user involvement throughout the design process, designer interaction with the user and iterations within design process stages. To address the overall aim of the research, this thesis investigates whether the user centred nature of sports design is applicable in other design disciplines. Given the urgent global issue of the ageing population, this research explores the applicability of the sports design process model to inclusive design – another highly user centred design approach. This research takes a qualitative approach to understanding how the sports design process model could be applicable to inclusive design practice, involving both inclusive designers from industry and inclusive design experts from the Helen Hamlyn Centre for Design. An iterative approach of concept generation, development and evaluation was followed, with the outcome and further contribution to knowledge, an interactive framework that facilitates designer-client communication within the inclusive design process. This research will impact client engagement within the inclusive design process, increasing client awareness of inclusive design and encouraging the uptake of an inclusive design approach within industry. The inclusion of a diversity of users within the design process will result in a product that not only meets the needs of more diverse users, but will also be usable to those with greater capabilities.

Call, Dean Allen. "Examining How Knowledge Managers Facilitate the Process of Knowledge Creation in Organizations". ScholarWorks, 2016. https://scholarworks.waldenu.edu/dissertations/2920.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
The problem addressed in this study was how knowledge managers facilitated the process of knowledge creation. Researchers identified this area as important because it begins to fill the literature gap in the dynamics surrounding knowledge creation. Using 4 research questions developed from the theory of dynamic organizational knowledge creation, the study investigated how knowledge managers facilitated and supported knowledge creation, promoted knowledge formation, and accounted for knowledge gaps. The theory was selected to provide a framework and an analytical perspective on the process of knowledge creation. A qualitative research design was used to learn from a sample of 12 Chief Knowledge Managers their experiences orchestrating a knowledge management program. In-depth interviews were conducted with each participant, transcribed and imported to NVivo. Data were analyzed using the theory and findings were validated via member checking and triangulation. The results revealed that knowledge managers facilitated knowledge creation by building on social and cultural factors, providing leadership, and incentivizing knowledge sharing. Skills identified for facilitating knowledge creation were future envisioning, change management, interpersonal communication, and culture building. Future research would benefit from studies that focused on the outcomes of knowledge management efforts, the perceptions of organization members to determine if knowledge management efforts facilitated knowledge creation and if knowledge managers follow a specific cognitive learning theory. The social change implications from the present study include strengthening the potential for knowledge creation in organizations, prompting shifts in established paradigms, and fostering trust and expectation from collaboration.

Abstract (sommario):
Spirit of Learning in a general sense is an exploration of the inextricable link between learning, individual personal development and potential. This thesis emphasises the personal/spiritual development of the educator, including the author, within an enhanced, holistic learning context, which is called 'integrated accelerative learning'. The inquiry examines the way individual educators and 'life-long learners' develop their inner selves, by exploring some of their relevant attitudes, values and significant life experiences. The accelerative learning approach is based on a philosophy which includes an expanded view and maximisation of human potential. It incorporates the knowledge of individual learning styles, 'multiple intelligences' and emphasises the development of effective life-long learning strategies. Throughout the thesis the use of the term 'spiritual development' is intended to be interchangeable with 'personal development' and is based on the author's view that the essential self is a spiritual being. An 'educator of integrated acclerative learning'is described as one who is aware of, and to some degree, consciously utilises elements of the paraconscious (beyond the usual conscious level), in order to enhance the teaching/learning process and promote personal development within the learner. The author's thesis is that educators need to examine the essence of themselves behind innovative methods used. The belief is that there is a need to nourish, sustain and grow in accordance with the positive and transformative nature of the philosophy espoused and the methods used. Within the area of personal/spiritual development, many themes have emerged, including the changing role and attitudes of the educator from teacher to facilitator. The theme of integration is a particularly strong one and includes the concept of congruency, encouraging the development of all aspects of ourselves and integrating one's personal and professional lives. In general, the writer has discovered that most of the smaller themes can be identified under three major umbrella themes. These are integration, awareness and human potential, the development and expansion of which can be seen as promoting a sense of interconnectedness and the development of spirituality in general

Abstract (sommario):
This case study finds two modes in adults transformative learning experience. These modes create different openings for learning and conditions to be facilitated. A group of 23 adultlearners and the environment from a University course on organizational counseling, coaching and leadership provided its research site. Data from subjective, collective and interactive spaces in the course illuminate what conditions facilitate transformative learning processes. Field observations, interviews and documents from all parts of the course were analyzed using the computer software Nvivo. Conditions for transformative processes are found in the learner-experience relationships, the premises of a comfort zone, teacher-student and group constellations and are discussed in relation to considerations for their development. Commonalities are found in how to facilitate two phases of a learning experience in these conditions: Passive modes of learning can be facilitated by helping an individuals or groups extract meaning and express these meanings from his/their experience. Being exposed to the meaning environments of others can also have facilitating effects. Active modes of learning can be facilitated by helping an individual or group keep his/their attention directed towards the processes he/they are involved in. Holding attention directed over time towards the process and seeing the processes through a variety of different lenses and frames of thought helps integrate the learning and sustain its impact.

Jacobs, Jonatan. "Creating a technology map to facilitate the process of modernisation throughout the mining cycle". Diss., University of Pretoria, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/61296.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
The global mining industry is currently under pressure. The industry is in the midst of the largest mining super cycle since the Second World War. Mining companies face increasing challenges to profitability due to unfavourable commodity prices as well as increasingly tougher mining conditions, rising pressure from various stakeholders and numerous other mining challenges. Incremental improvements are no longer sufficient enough to sustain the mining sector, which explains why many leading organisations are rallying behind the innovation imperative that calls for major transformation. This is especially true with the impending technological revolution, where innovation will be the key to survival. This not only holds true for the mining industry, but for nearly all companies, businesses, organisations and governments worldwide. In the upcoming technological age, the line distinguishing different businesses and operations will become increasingly unclear. It is therefore vital to approach innovation from a holistic point of view. One driver to improve the innovation efforts of an organisation is to look at technology trends across various industries. Many technologies exist, or are in development, that may be applied to be used (or be modified and applied) in the mining industry. With the rapid rate of technological advancement world-wide, it is also important for the mining industry to remain aware of cross-sectorial innovations that may have an impact in future. This is especially true when it comes to exponential and disruptive technologies. Operational performance excellence relies on the innovative use of such technologies and to remain abreast with developments that may add value to a given component within the mining cycle. As a result, the mining industry will be increasingly focused on integrating all activities across the value chain. This includes the continued introduction and development of Integrated Remote Operating Centres, mechanisation and automation. Such technological advances and implementations in mining form part of the modernisation drive currently taking place in the South African mining industry. However, in order to accomplish such value-added end-goals the constituent technologies need to be evaluated in detail. From these and many other technologies, mining operations can also achieve multiple other benefits and "quick wins". While investigating these technological trends it was found that many different organisations, businesses, institutions and individuals conduct great amounts of research to identify technologies that are applicable, or potentially relevant, to mining. Often these studies complete the same research for the initial phases, prior to focussing in more depth on specific technologies. As a result, a need was identified for research in technologies that may add value to mining. By identifying starting points for further studies and R&D into specific technological solutions, many of these initial research phases may potentially be eliminated or reduced. The greater part of the mining industry is often not aware of emerging technologies that could potentially add value to their operations, or which may disrupt aspects of their business or even their daily lives. The impact or benefit of technologies has to be assessed in order to gain an understanding of how opportunities could be exploited or detrimental impacts negated. In doing so, an organisation may work towards enhancing its operational risk management strategies, minimise negative consequences from external technological factors, and identify potential improvements to an operation or the organisation as a whole. It is therefore vital for companies and individual operations to have access to a platform that can provide technology related information which needs to be accounted for. For this reason, a Technology Map was created that highlights technologies that may further be analysed in order to identify those technologies with sufficient potential to add value. The structure of the Technology Map was developed to include the main value drivers within the entire mining cycle, covering the exploration-, mine evaluation-, mine design-, operations-, and mine closure to post-closure mining phases. Various technologies, ranging from physical to digital technologies, were analysed. Those with potential to add value, or which need to be accounted for in order to avoid detrimental impacts, were slotted into the sub-categories, processes, activities, focus areas or specific challenges beneath the applicable value drivers throughout the mining cycle.

Abstract (sommario):
New Product Development (NPD) plays a critical role in the success of manufacturing firms. Activities in the product development process are dependent on the exchange of knowledge among NPD project team members. Increasingly, many organisations consider effective knowledge sharing to be a source of competitive advantage. However, the sharing of knowledge is often inhibited in various ways. This doctoral research presents an exploratory case study conducted at a multinational physical goods manufacturer. This investigation uncovered three, empirically derived and theoretically informed, barriers to knowledge sharing. They have been articulated as the lack of an explicit definition of information about the knowledge used and generated in the product development process, and the absence of mechanisms to make this information accessible in a multilingual environment and to disseminate it to NPD project team members. Collectively, these barriers inhibit a shared understanding of product development process knowledge. Existing knowledge management methodologies have focused on the capture of knowledge, rather than providing information about the knowledge and have not explicitly addressed issues regarding knowledge sharing in a multilingual environment. This thesis reports a prototype method and tool to facilitate knowledge sharing that addresses all three knowledge sharing barriers. Initially the research set out to identify and classify new product development process knowledge and then sought to determine what information about specific knowledge items is required by project teams. Based on the exploratory case findings, an ontology has been developed that formally defines information about this knowledge and allows it to be captured in a knowledge acquisition tool, thereby creating a knowledge base. A mechanism is provided to permit language labels to be attached to concepts and relations in the ontology, making it accessible to speakers of different languages. A dissemination tool allows the ontology and knowledge base to be viewed via a Web browser client. Essentially, the ontology and mechanisms facilitate a knowledge sharing capability. Some initial validation was conducted to better understand implementation issues and future deployment of the prototype method and tool in practice.

Abstract (sommario):
Thesis advisor: Lauri Johnson
This qualitative case study examined the perceptions of teachers and leaders in one Massachusetts school district about the actions of school leaders that engaged teachers in the reflective process. Utilizing Lave and Wenger's (1991) "Communities of Practice" as a framework enabled the researcher to examine the extent to which a social process of learning existed and whether the district's current structures and conditions engaged teachers in the reflective process. The findings from this study drew upon interview, observation, and document data to explore teacher and leader views regarding specific leadership actions (or inactions) that supported and facilitated teacher engagement in the examination of their practice and whether teachers viewed those actions as impacting their ability to reflect. Results indicated that school leaders implemented anticipatory and ongoing actions to create necessary preconditions, which fostered teacher reflection. Data revealed a district belief that reflective dialogue in pairs (teacher to teacher or teacher to administrator) or in groups (faculty meetings, grade level or departmental meeting) was important to educator growth. Administrators' actions, which engaged teachers in a reflective process, were perceived to be those associated with being an instructional leader. Recommendations include helping district leaders understand the role and design of collaborative reflection as well as the role of the principal in order to plan and implement effective professional learning, which develops reflective practitioners

Abstract (sommario):
This master’s thesis explores the role of the facilitator in business model innovation [BMI]. In the last 15 years BMI has gained increasing importance for companies to establish a competitive advantage. Yet, BMI is considered to be marked by high complexity and phases of uncertainty in the process of creating it. Equipped with the skills and characteristics, a facilitator may support groups in their endeavor to create BMIs. As a result of a qualitative study including expert interviews and observations of facilitated workshops, five aggregated dimensions describing the role of the business model facilitator are identified. The results suggest that a facilitator may contribute to BMI by leading and navigating the process, supporting the group to generate knowledge and taking ideas to actions, sharing his or her own knowledge with the team, and by providing mental support and stability. Thereby, the facilitator may contribute to BMI on three levels: the team level, the process level, and the new business model.

Abstract (sommario):
This research aims to examine the effectiveness of Soft Systems Methodology (SSM) to enable systemic change within local goverment and local NHS environments and to examine the role of the facilitator within this process. Checkland's Mode 2 variant of Soft Systems Methodology was applied on an experimental basis in two environments, Herefordshire Health Authority and Sand well Health Authority. The Herefordshire application used SSM in the design of an Integrated Care Pathway for stroke patients. In Sandwell, SSM was deployed to assist in the design of an Infonnation Management and Technology (IM&T) Strategy for the boundary-spanning Sandwell Partnership. Both of these environments were experiencing significant organisational change as the experiments unfurled. The explicit objectives of the research were: To examine the evolution and development of SSM and to contribute to its further development. To apply the Soft Systems Methodology to change processes within the NHS. To evaluate the potential role of SSM in this wider process of change. To assess the role of the researcher as a facilitator within this process. To develop a critical framework through which the impact of SSM on change might be understood and assessed. In developing these objectives, it became apparent that there was a gap in knowledge relating to SSM. This gap concerns the evaluation of the role of the approach in the change process. The case studies highlighted issues in stakeholder selection and management; the communicative assumptions in SSM; the ambiguous role of the facilitator; and the impact of highly politicised problem environments on the effectiveness of the methodology in the process of change. An augmented variant on SSM that integrates an appropriate (social constructivist) evaluation method is outlined, together with a series of hypotheses about the operationalisation of this proposed method.

Requirements definition, where engineers interact with clients to better know the organization`s activities and understand their needs, is a key process to the success of an information system. As such, requirements defined with clarity and according to the client`s needs are fundamental to the development of effective information systems for the organization. This dissertation proposes a method to help requirements engineers in the task of eliciting requirements. These requirements must be in accordance with the business as to improve the quality of the organization`s information systems. The proposed method integrates process modeling and business ontology. The work assumes that the integration of these perspectives provides a solid source of organization knowledge. Using this knowledge source, requirements engineers are empowered to define requirements that better fits the organization business. The integration of process modeling and business ontology is described in detail and exemplified by a case study.

Abstract (sommario):
A large number of people throughout the world have naturally kinky hair that may be very difficult to manage. These people often subject their hair to vigorous and harsh treatment processes in order to straighten it and hence make it more manageable. Hair braiding is a popular and fashionable trend amongst many people, in particular people of African descent. Braided hairstyles serve to preserve hair and protect it, and to give it time to rejuvenate after a period of harsh treatment. During the braiding process synthetic hair is attached to natural hair by weaving a length of the natural hair into one end of each braid. Other materials like wool or cotton may be use used to achieve different hairstyles and textures. Several strands of natural hair are used to secure each braid. The braids are normally left intact for a number of weeks or even months. Although braiding is a helpful African hair grooming practice, the process of taking down or detangling the braids is labor intensive and entails each braid being cut just below where the natural hair ceases and the natural hair being untangled from the braid using a safety pin, a needle or a fine toothed comb. The labor and long hours required to detangle braided hairstyles often results in braid wearers frustratingly pulling on their braided hair. This behavior inevitably destroys the hair follicle and leaves the hair damaged. According to a study conducted by the University of Cape Town’s dermatology department, braiding may be the root cause of traction alopecia (TA) amongst braid wearers. Traction alopecia is a form of alopecia, or gradual hair loss that is caused primarily by excessive pulling forces applied to the hair. The purpose of this current study was to investigate the factors, other than braid tightness, that affect the way and ease with which braids are detangled from the human hair. The study hypothesized that frictional forces present in braided hair were amongst these factors. It was hypothesized that introducing a lubricating formulation in the braids would allow for easier braid detangling. In order to decrease the prevalence of traction alopecia from braided hair, two hair strengthening actives were included in the test formulation. The study investigated the effects of the test formulations on braid detangling, hair friction and on the tensile strength of human hair. The study found that the method used did not pick up any significant differences between the braid detangling forces of treated braids when compared to the braid vi detangling forces of untreated hair. The same method used to measure braid detangling forces was able to show that there are variations in the braid detangling forces of different sections along the braid length. The method to measure braid detangling was based on the principles of hair combability measurements. The study also found that although the method used to measure braid detangling forces was unsuccessful in picking up significant differences in braid detangling forces of treated hair and untreated hair, the method used to measure the frictional forces of human hair showed that the frictional forces of hair treated with test formulations were significantly different than that of untreated hair. The method used to measure frictional forces was based on the capstan approach. The Capstan method measures the forces required to slide a weighted hair fibre over a curved surface of reference material. The interaction between the weighted fibre and the reference material simulates the movement of hair out of a braid ensemble in the braid detangling process. The optimum mixture with the minimum coefficient of friction, predicted a coefficient of friction of 0.61 ± 0.04. The optimum formulation was found to be one that contained 30% Cyclopentasiloxane , 0% PEG-12 Dimethicone, 10% 18-MEA, 29% water, 10% hair strengthening actives, 12.86% emulsifier combination and 8% other oils. The study also showed that including hair strengthening actives, such as hydrolysed proteins had significant effects in the tensile strength properties of chemically treated African hair.

Abstract (sommario):
Thesis (D.P.H.)--Boston University
Background: Diet-related chronic diseases and conditions include obesity, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, hypertension, some cancers, and osteoporosis. Interventions that focus on increasing nutrition knowledge, motivation, and healthy eating skills at the individual level alone have been ineffective at producing sustainable changes in eating behaviors. It is now widely recognized that multi-level interventions that support healthy eating practices are needed. Institutions of higher learning have opportunities to positively influence the food choices of large numbers of students for an extended period of time. To date, no evaluations or guidelines for implementing environmental interventions in a college setting have been published. Methods: A comprehensive and systematic process evaluation of a targeted health promotion intervention designed to transform the food environment at a four-year university was performed. Qualitative and quantitative methods were employed to assess the context, fidelity, dose delivered, dose received, and reach of intervention activities. Findings: Support and resources for intervention development and implementation were high. University administrators recognized a responsibility to provide a healthy eating environment for diners in their care at a formative age. Education, language, and cultural barriers negatively impacted fidelity. Perceived higher food costs described by some foodservice managers negatively impacted dose delivered. Dose received and reach were higher for students defining health in terms of absolute and specific eating behaviors compared to students defining health more moderately. Traditional entrees, make-your-own sandwiches, and pasta entrees had broader appeal than entrees with unfamiliar ingredients and vegan and vegetarian options. Research translation: Study findings were used to revise the program implementation manual. The manual includes operational guidelines for nutrition criteria, menu planning, promotional activities, and training of dining services staff and student employees. Strategies for addressing highlighted barriers to improve program implementation are also presented. Conclusion: A successful environmental intervention that has fidelity and reach has the potential to improve the eating habits of millions of young adults when implemented in college dining halls. This evaluation identified barriers that are likely to be common in other foodservice operations. More research is needed to determine if proposed strategies result in improved implementation, and ultimately, increased healthy eating behavior of college students.

Abstract (sommario):

Historically nurses have been strongly engaged in the political process, however in recent decades the profession has moved away from the policy arena. Without political engagement, issues that are important to the nursing profession are not addressed timely, if at all. One such issue is that of full practice authority for advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs). Well over 100 studies have been completed over the past 40 years showing the safe and quality care APRNs provide independently. Numerous well-respected, non-nursing organizations support the removal of state laws that impede the ability of APRNs to practice to the full extent of their education and training, particularly in light of the looming extinction of primary care physicians and the simultaneous increase in demand for primary care services (American Association of Retired People, 2011; Federal Trade Commission, 2012; Institute of Medicine, 2010; National Governor's Association, 2012). The purpose of this capstone project was to provide a website in which APRNs and APRN students could communicate quality information to legislators in support of full practice for APRNs in West Virginia during a legislative session in which a full practice bill was introduced. Website visitors who were APRNs or APRN students were asked to complete a survey on the website comparing their communication with legislators last year to their communication or intended communication, after they had been introduced to the website, during the current session. Findings included a strong statistical association between use of the website and communication with legislators along with a statistical association between use of the website and conveyance of quality information supporting full practice authority. The findings suggest that websites related to specific nursing issues could be a method to increase political involvement of nurses.

Abstract (sommario):
Thesis (MDram)--Stellenbosch University, 1997.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: A thesis in which the author examines ways in which the director within an acting training institution may use the full-scale theatre production as a means of intense training for the students involved. The author contends that much of the theory and practical work taught within a classroom situation cannot be fully comprehended and/or brought to fruition if it is not tested and experienced within as realistic (pertaining to professional theatre) as possible a scenario, in the form of the student production. For the purposes of this thesis, the typical practical production process is used as a model and different areas in which the director may act as a teacher or catalyst to self-discovery are discussed largely in the order in which they might occur in practice. The author concludes that to provide intensive training through the production process would be a very time-consuming and costly endeavour, although very rewarding if it were at all possible. In addition to this, it would require a highly qualified director-trainer, with an holistic understanding of the 'theatrical art, who is prepared to invest a great amount of time and effort in such a production. Research for this thesis included reading material, practical directing and acting projects, and teaching practical acting in the capacity of a part-time lecturer at the University of Stellenbosch Drama Department.

Brink, Andrea Johanna Wilhelmine. "Evaluation of a programme to facilitate positive youth development / A.J.W. Brink". Thesis, North-West University, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/10394/4706.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
The South African context, in particular, is characterized by a definite need for the facilitation of the development of the youth in a more positive trajectory. Family structures are not always robust enough to support the positive development of the youth, owing to the demands made on single–parent families, amongst other reasons. Community structures may also be less supportive of the development of the youth, because of the impact of the changes associated with the transitional phase of the country during the past sixteen years (Meehan, Peirson & Fridjhon, 2007). Furthermore, young people under the age of 15 years comprise almost a third of the total South African population (Statistics South Africa, 2009), and in the future, they will have to be prepared for an adulthood faced with previously unknown challenges (United Nations Population Fund). The importance of the development of the youth, in order to enable them to contribute to their country in future, is acknowledged by the South African Governement (National Youth Commission website). This study was conducted within the parameters of the newly developing positive youth development (PYD) paradigm. The empirical level of this paradigm is well represented in the literature, indicating that the content areas, or the “what” of PYD, have been well elucidated. However, there is a lack of theory, especially with regard to models describing developmental change (Larson et al., 2004), and evaluation of interventions aiming at the facilitation of PYD. In order to contribute to the answering of the questions regarding the “how” of development, this study had the following main aims: a) the compilation of a theoretical model, describing developmental change in the youth; b) the operationalization of this model for intervention purposes; and c) the evaluation of a programme and the model on which it is based. The study is reported on in an article format, and comprises a total of three articles. The first article focuses on the process of the compilation of a theoretical model by means of: a) the construction of a comprehensive meta–theoretical matrix, b) the integration of theory that features in the PYD literature, and c) the expansion of the latter with theory from other compatible sub–disciplines in psychology. The resultant Positive Youth Development Intervention (PYDI) model provides a process–related description of developmental change ? and is one of the first models to do so. The second article describes the operationalization of the PYDI model, by means of an indication of the relevant constructs, phenomena and processes to be facilitated. Although recent research points to a relation between PYD and self–regulation, there has been no model, describing the role of self–regulation in the facilitation of the positive development of the youth. This study adapted a model from an educational context (Heckhausen & Gollwitzer, 1987 (as cited in Boekaerts & Niemivirta, 2005)), in order to describe the regular self–regulatory processes constituting the bi–directional interactions between the youth and their primary life contexts, as proposed by developmental systems theory (Lerner, 1998), the meta–theory to PYD (King et al., 2005). A further specifc contribution is that the presentation aspects of the programme material, aimed at facilitating the integration thereof, are addressed on a theoretical level. The third article describes the evaluation of the PYDI model and programme, with young adolescents in a school in a rural area as participants. A mixed–methods study, which has been shown to render much richer information than a quantitative study alone, was applied. Although the quantitative data did not prove the success of the programme, the qualitative data suggested that some aspects of self–regulation had indeed been facilitated successfully. A second follow–up assessment, conducted seventeen months later, indicated that certain skills had only become internalized by that time, suggesting that the implementation and evaluation of such a programme should be expanded over an extended time–frame. This study has contributed to the level of theory of PYD, by indicating, a) the lacunae, and b) that theory in compatible sub–disciplinary paradigms could be used in order to devise workable models for PYD. Furthermore, the process–related nature of the PYDI model and programme, owing to its adaptability to different needs, may be adapted and extended to be applicable to the needs of the diverse South African population. Recommendations regarding future application and research, especially within the South African context, have also been put forward in the study.

Abstract (sommario):
The aim of this research is to develop an understanding of factors that enable innovation teams to conduct agile innovation work in an industrial context. The background and reason for this research are not only that innovation is necessary for companies that want to stay in business, but also that these companies need to increase the speed of their innovation work to stay competitive. Research has demonstrated that cross-functional (X-functional) innovation teams are fast and agile, and are therefore assumed to be suitable for these activities. Still, there is much knowledge to be gained. Prior research has identified factors that are seen as important from an organizational, team, and individual perspective to enable teams to work with potentially innovative outcomes. However, in cases where teams have been created with the purpose of conducting innovation work, i.e. innovation teams, problems related to e.g. performance and learning have occurred, and the innovation work has stopped shortly after conducted research projects due to the high level of complexity. The research question (RQ) that this thesis explores is the following: “Which innovation enablers are important for innovation teams when conducting agile innovation work in an industrial context?” Based on the RQ, two sub-questions are formulated and operationalized to answer the RQ. Qualitative data have been collected from five innovation teams in two phases. Two innovation teams in two small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) were studied in the first phase to clarify the situation for innovation teams before innovation work is begun. In the second phase, which built on the first one, three innovation teams in a large industrial company were studied as they conducted three separate innovation projects. This research revealed five main findings: first, knowledge about important innovation enablers (Enablers) revealed from a literature study; second, the Innovation Team Model (ITM), demonstrating innovation teams before innovation work is begun in relation to the individuals and organization in a holistic way; third, the innovation team creation process (CIT-process), a stepwise process in how to create an innovation team; fourth, the innovation facilitator, who supports and facilitates the innovation team throughout the CIT-process and the innovation projects; and fifth, the Extended Innovation Process (EIP), an extension of the traditional innovation process by a pre-phase, i.e. a Preparation-phase, to gather and prepare the innovation teams for forthcoming work. The findings regarding the importance of the CIT-process, the EIP, and the innovation facilitator were unexpected. The findings formed the Innovation Team Framework (ITF), which represents all of the findings in relation to each other. The EIP is used as the basis for which the other innovation enablers are provided to the innovation teams through an innovation facilitator’s competence throughout the innovation project. The ITF is multidimensional: it could serve as a tool to describe both the simplicity and the complexity when creating an innovation team and forthcoming work and activities. All separate findings within this research contribute to prior research in individual ways, however, the ITF is the main scientific contribution of this study to Innovation management. Practitioners can use the ITF as a complement to already established methodologies for product development or similar; however one should be aware of the limited nature of the data set that served as the basis for analysis and development of the ITF. Further studies regarding the ITF and its detailed models and processes are suggested.

Abstract (sommario):
Thesis (M.S.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Mechanical Engineering, 1994.
Includes bibliographical references (leaf 107).
Three Dimensional Printing, a rapid prototyping technology, fabricates ceramic casting shells directly from 3-D CAD models. To create a shell, loose alumina powder in thin layers is joined by selectively depositing a colloidal silica binder. Firing fuses the silica to the alumina, and subsequent processing removes the unbound powder from the casting cavity. In some instances, it may be advantageous to perform powder removal before firing. This requires higher green strength than what is obtainable with the current binder. An alternative binder consisting of 18 vol.% colloidal silica co-dispersed with 10 vol.% acrylic emulsion in an aqueous medium was developed. The polymeric component imparts higher green strength to the part (3.6 vs. 0.4 MPa), yet decomposes during firing to minimize interference with the fusion of silica to alumina. The reduction of fired strength in samples printed with co-dispersions was less than 10%. Through designed experiments, performance of the co-dispersion was quantified by additional criteria such as shrinkage, warping, and binder stability. Average linear shrinkage in parts printed with co-dispersions was 0.05% after firing at 900°C. A simple model for warping, based on elastic response of a plate to free thermal strain, predicts that flat plates tend to warp into a paraboloid after firing. The experimental results correlated well with this prediction.

Abstract (sommario):
Companies are pressured by dynamic markets and the increase of innovation speed, technology change and shortening of product life cycles. They need to attend to customer demands and ever-changing environmental conditions, policies and regulations set by governments and institutions in order to stay relevant on the market and be allowed to operate. Innovation has therefore become a must and the innovation processes are a central part of companies’ operations. Futures studies is presented as a systematic way of studying the future that can contribute to a better understanding of the needed direction of innovations. The aim of the study is to investigate how futures studies can be embodied in the innovation process of manufacturing companies in the industry of rail and road vehicles. The structure of an innovation process within the industry of rail and road vehicles is summarized to consist of three different phases: the fuzzy-front-end, the development and the maintenance. The innovation process is further divided by the components of the product and during the entire process there are decision points to evaluate the projects. The organizational aspects which are considered to have the most influence on the innovation process concern the company environment and internal knowledge sharing. Futures studies are moderately performed at different stages of the innovation process and levels of the organization, mainly at corporate level and in the fuzzy-front-end. The people involved in these activities are solely employees from the company in question and the main issue found regarding the activities of futures studies is that the results of the foresight are not communicated properly across the company. Two ways in which futures studies can be embodied in the innovation process are identified to create more high-quality ideas and to tune the product during the process according to the future market, with a third way ensuring alignment with corporate level.  A recommendation is presented consisting of a scenario workshop which enables for futures studies to be embodied in the innovation process of manufacturing companies. Activities and pointers for prior, during and after the workshop are presented. The results of the workshop will further be embodied in the innovation process in three different ways, in the beginning, alongside and as a basis for the corporate strategy.

Abstract (sommario):
Studies investigating the development of perceived control and coping in the academic domain generally adopt an individual differences approach, reporting mean-level changes in these and associated constructs. Very few studies attempt to chart the process by which these personal resources exert individual and combined influences on academic outcomes, such as motivation and achievement, in light of normative developmental changes. Further, a consideration of reciprocal influences of these constructs on developmental changes and the contribution of social partners to these processes is not common. Conceptualized from a systems perspective, this study integrates these different approaches in a longitudinal inquiry into the development of perceived control and coping, the impact of coping on academic engagement and achievement, and how support from the context shapes, and is subsequently shaped by, student behavior. An action-theoretic model is used to describe the hypothesized relationships, deriving from Deci & Ryan's (1985) self-determination theory, and incorporating a flexible framework of coping as functionally similar yet structurally distinct strategies, defined as action-regulation under stress (Skinner, Edge, Altman, Sherwood, 2003; Skinner & Zimmer-Gembeck, 2007). Four ways of coping are examined, divided into two categories: mastery coping, comprising problem-solving and information-seeking, and helplessness coping, comprising escape and confusion ways of coping. Contextual support is conceptualized as teacher provision of structure, involvement, and autonomy support. Engagement, as a motivational resource that leads to increased achievement, comprises both behavioral and emotional aspects of engagement. A tri-partite formulation of perceived control is used (Skinner, Chapman, & Baltes, 1988a), comprising means-end (strategy), agency (capacity), and generalized control beliefs. Data collected during one year of a four-year longitudinal study from 665 students in grades four and six, and fifty-three of their teachers, were used for this investigation. Normative developmental differences were examined through comparisons of mean-level shifts in each of the model constructs; regression-based analyses tested for age differences over time in the process structure of the model. Reciprocal influences of coping and engagement on teacher support and perceived control, and of engagement and achievement on coping, were also tested for age differences. Results highlight the normative developmental changes that occur in these constructs during middle childhood, and indicate that the pattern of these changes is largely consistent with expectations; however, the process structure of the model relating the constructs of interest was found to be stable over time, with only one significant age difference detected: the influence on mastery coping of means-end control beliefs for effort. All other relationships tested did not differ significantly as children get older. Discussion focuses on evidence provided by the results of age trends in the developmental processes believed to be the drivers of change in the study constructs. Implications for the study of coping, regulatory processes, and features of the educational context, as they relate to the development of children's coping and control resources, are explored, with suggestions for the direction future research in these areas might take.

"An inquiry into how children describe spiritual and philosophical meaning in their lives and the development of a 'spiritual listening' technique to help educational psychologists facilitate this process". Thesis, University of East London, 2010. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.533037.

Abstract (sommario):
Recent legislation (DfES, 2003; Children Act 2004) has led to a renewed emphasis on listening to children resulting in new approaches, such as `spiritual listening' (Gersch et al, 2008), being developed. `Spiritual listening' is a method of `deeper listening to children's views on concepts such as 'happiness', `destiny' and 'purpose'. The researcher aimed to extend this initial research by carrying out two interconnected studies, Study 1 with a theoretical focus and Study 2 with a practical focus. Study 1 aimed to explore children's spiritual and philosophical meaning-making and develop a theory underlying this process. Study 2 aimed to develop the `spiritual listening' tool for EP use. Adopting humanistic principles and a social constructionist epistemology, the researcher used Grounded Theory to allow both a theory, and the tool, to develop as the research progressed. Study 1 consisted of semi-structured interviews (using 'spiritual listening' questions) with 20 participants (10-11yrs). Responses were analysed and a theory identified. Study 2 incorporated two elements. Firstly, an 'advisory group' of 4 children (10-11 yrs) from a school using the P4C programme (philosophy for children) were recruited as co-researchers, and met the researcher 4 times to discuss the development of the tool. Secondly, an evaluation of the spiritual listening session was carried out with each participant, using semi-structured interviews and questionnaires. This evaluation helped to shape the final tool. The findings corresponded to the two studies. The analysis of the interviews led to a theory that `spiritual listening' facilitates meaning-making by enabling children to explore links between 'concrete' and 'metaphysical' aspects of their lives (Study 1). The evaluation data was summarised, along with an outline of the work carried out with the advisory group. This led to a presentation of the remodelled tool (Study 2) and a discussion about the implications for EP practice.

Abstract (sommario):

Abstract (sommario):
This multiple case study explored the potential for Appreciative Inquiry (AI) to give three classes of primary children voice and influence over decisions that affect their learning, and facilitated their involvement in evaluating AI. Using mixed methods, it examined changes in: children and teachers’ beliefs about the value of pupil participation; curriculum activities for writing; and children’s attitudes, progress and attainment. The children and teachers suggested improvements to the AI process so that it can be as inclusive as possible. The results indicated that AI has the potential to shift the culture of pupil participation in the class, but needs time (and good timing) to be effective. Children devised innovative curriculum activities, often for real purposes, which were highly motivating and engaging. However, standardised measures of pupil attitudes and attainment provided no evidence of positive change. An important finding from the children was how challenging group work can be within AI, especially for children with Special Educational Needs and Disability (SEND). This study makes an original contribution to the literature on pupil participation and AI, with the expectation that the AI process may now be developed further within schools.

Fire is a common disaster; according to the 2015 fire statistics analysis of the National Fire Agency of Ministry of the Interior, fire incidence is rising year by year, and sound fire safety equipment reviews in the design phase can help reduce fire occurrence and thus, casualties and property losses after fire can be mitigated. However, current fire safety equipment reviews involve many regulations for various fire safety equipment types and there is no standardized reviewing process, making local fire departments use different reviewing processes, reviewers may even neglect review items and inspectors need to perform second reviews upon project completion. Thus, this research first establishes a standardized reviewing process through expert interview and literature review; common reviewing defects in the practice are considered in the process and the integrity and efficacy to the practice is verified by domain experts. In addition, many review items cannot be identified and evaluated from 2D drawings in fire safety equipment reviews in the design phase. Therefore, through expert interview, the research identifies the limitations of 2D drawings in a traditional reviewing process and common problems which cannot be solved using 2D drawings. Then, Building Information Modeling (BIM) is utilized to address these common problems by using its characteristics of spacial information, building information and quantity take-off functionality. BIM application to fire safety equipment reviews is incorporated in the proposed reviewing process and domain experts verify that the new process can shorten reviewing time, increase reviewing scopes and improve reviewing accuracy.

Abstract In this study, the CO2-selective PA TFC membranes with fixed-site carrier were prepared via the interfacial polymerization of water-soluble amine monomers including ethylenediamine (EDA), triethylenetetramine (TETA) and pentaethylenehexamine (PEHA) with acyl chloride monomer trimesoyl chloride (TMC) on the surface of asymmetric modified polysulfone (mPSf) membranes. The mPSf is prepared by immersed PSf support membrane into the ethylenediamine tetrakis (propoxylate-B-ethoxylate) surfactant solution to enhanced the hydrophilicity and filled the small pore on the surface to form a smooth surface. And then the Pebax1657® a block copolymer composed of flexible polyether and rigid polyamide, was coated on the PA TFC membranes via the spin-coating method to improve the separation performance. These TFC membranes were applied to CO2/N2 separation process. The effects of monomer structure, concentration of aqueous and organic solutions, feed pressure and water content on the gas transport properties including CO2 permeability, N2 permeability and CO2/N2 selectivity were investigated. Attentuated total reflectance-Fourier transform infrared (ATR-FTIR) spectroscopy, Field-Emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM) observation, Variable monoenergy slow positron beam (VMSPB), Microbalance and water contact angle measurement were used to characterize the chemical structure, morphology and hydrophilicity of the TFC membrane. From the results, the better interfacial polymerization condition is 0.1M aqueous solution immersion and 0.001M organic solution contact. In this interfacial polymerization condition, the Pebax/EDA-TMC/mPSf membrane was prepared by EDA and TMC, its CO2 permeance and CO2/N2 selectivity is 52.98GPU and 157.7, respectively. Compared with EDA monomer, PEHA is more appropriate for the TFC membrane preparation. Because the facilitated transport mechanism is increase linear as the amine group content. Thus Pebax/PEHA-TMC/mPSf membrane CO2 permeance and CO2/N2 selectivity is 134.2GPU and 113.5, respectively. Under the low feed pressure (0.1bar) test, the facilitated transport mechanism efficiency can be increase, and then enhanced the CO2 permeance to 728.9 GPU and CO2/N2 selectivity to 273.2 for Pebax/PEHA-TMC/mPSf membrane. Because the competitive adsorption, the separation performance is decrease significantly for 15%CO2/85%N2 mixing gas test.

Abstract (sommario):
High Performance Computing (HPC) systems play an important role in today’s heavily digitized world, which is in a constant demand for higher speed of calculation and performance. HPC applications are used in multiple domains such as telecommunication, health, scientific research, and more. With the emergence of multi-core and cloud computing platforms, the HPC paradigm is quickly becoming the design of choice of many service providers. HPC systems are also known to be complex to debug and analyze due to the large number of processes they involve and the way these processes communicate with each other to perform specific tasks. As a result, software engineers must spend extensive amount of time understanding the complex interactions among a system’s processes. This is usually done through the analysis of execution traces generated from running the system at hand. Traces, however, are very difficult to work with due to the overwhelming size of typical traces. The objective of this research is to present a set of techniques that facilitates the understanding of the behaviour of HPC applications through the analysis of system traces. The first technique consists of building an exchange format called MTF (MPI Trace Format) for representing and exchanging traces generated from HPC applications based on the MPI (Message Passing Interface) standard, which is a de facto standard for inter-process communication for high performance computing systems. The design of MTF is validated against well-known requirements for a standard exchange format. The second technique aims to facilitate the understanding of large traces of inter-process communication by automatically extracting communication patterns that characterize their main behaviour. Two algorithms are presented. The first one permits the recognition of repeating patterns in traces of MPI (Message Passing Interaction) applications whereas the second algorithm searches if a given communication pattern occurs in a trace. Both algorithms are based on the n-gram extraction technique used in natural language processing. Finally, we developed a technique to abstract MPI traces by detecting the different execution phases in a program based on concepts from information theory. Using this approach, software engineers can examine the trace as a sequence of high-level computational phases instead of a mere flow of low-level events. The techniques presented in this thesis have been tested on traces generated from real HPC programs. The results from several case studies demonstrate the usefulness and effectiveness of our techniques.

With advanced development of information technologies, more and more applications of emerging technologies have been used in various fields. Learning the use of multi-disciplinary knowledge to develop cross-discipline applications has become one of popular interdisciplinary research areas. In this research, we use information technology to provide effective assistance in the application of building maintenance. The processes of disassembling and reassembling building elements are quite complex and require professional skills. We hope to optimize the disassembling and reassembling processes by utilizing Building Information Model, ontology and 3D modeling techniques, contributing to the maintenance, repair and reconstruction of buildings. Based on the life cycle of a building, this paper proposes a process to work with building information model and establish building structure ontology, maintenance ontology, and reconstruction ontology. We used the main house of a traditional Taiwanese three-section compound as a case study. The 3D models were created from the digital data of building where every architectural element was tagged. Assisted by ontologies and 3D models, we can more clearly express geometric, spatial and geographic information that relate to the maintenance of the building. We proposed a space-based extendable ontology for different structures of buildings to allow the addition of building elements. In addition to providing useful information for building maintenance, we hope to improve the preservation, maintenance, education and inheritance of historical monuments in the future by preserving and using their digital data in our system to make the development of cultural heritage preservation sustainable.

Online discussion, the common learning activity in e-learning, allows acquiring more knowledge and different opinions and ideas through interaction and exchange with others in the process to promote leaners’ cognition of learning issues and critical thinking ability. Socio-scientific issues (SSI) are a commonly discussed issue in the activity. Such issues involve in broad dimensions, show complicated contents, and have no standard answers. In the SSI discussion process, learners’ opinions and ideas play critical roles and are the critical factors in the discussion effectiveness. Accordingly, “Instant Perspective Comparison System (IPCS)” is designed in this study, expecting to present the differences in the opinions and ideas of both parties through visualization perspective comparison in order to facilitate the depth and width of learners’ thinking in the discussion process and promote the learning effectiveness of online discussion. With quasi-experimental study, 63 students of two G11 classes in a senior high school in Taipei City are randomly selected for the online discussion about “nuclear power generation”. 36 students of a class are randomly assigned as the experimental group with IPCS assisted online discussion, and 27 students of another class are randomly assigned as the control group with general online discussion to discuss the differences in learning performance and technology acceptance of learners between two groups. Furthermore, prior knowledge and computer-mediated communication (CMC) ability are regarded as the background variables to discuss the differenced in learning performance and technology acceptance of learners between two groups. What is more, lag sequential analysis (LSA) is also used for discussing the effective learning behavior model of learners in the experimental group. The research result shows that, in comparison with general online discussion, IPCS assisted online discussion could significantly facilitate leaners’ overall learning performance and sub-item multiple perspectives. IPCS could also promote the learning performance of learners with low CMC ability as well as enhance the complexity of the discussion content so as to more deeply comprehend and understand the discussion issue. In terms of technology acceptance, both groups do not achieve remarkable statistical differences and present generally high technology acceptance. However, learners in the experimental group show higher average scores on technology acceptance than those in the control group, revealing learners’ positive and satisfactory attitudes towards IPCS. According to the qualitative interview data and the behavior analysis in the learning process, functions of multiple calculation and perspective comparison could facilitate the comprehension of discussion content. When a learner is able to focus the thinking on different cutting points of the same issue or review the discussion content after browsing the post information, IPCS would effectively facilitate learners’ learning performance during online discussion. Based on the research result, suggestions for the improvement of IPCS teaching and Moodle discussion as well as further research directions are proposed in this study. Overall speaking, discussion learning, natural language processing, social network, and data visualization are combined in this study to develop IPCS for the innovative and effective learning of technology assisted online discussion. It would contribute to facilitating online discussion in e-learning.
