Testo completoA significant amount of time and effort has to go into teaching students. It is no art when lecturers simply read from a text book. The objective of this study was to determine the teaching methods that students at the Hotel School, Central University of Technology, Free State, consider as most effective to support learning. All first-year students (N=73) enrolled for the National Diploma: Hospitality Management were targeted to participate in the survey. A mixedmethod study design was followed, and a questionnaire consisting of closedand open-ended questions was developed for data collection. Closed-ended questions were rated on a five-point Likert scale, while answers to open-ended questions were analysed to determine trends. Results showed that lecturers used a variety of teaching methods. The lecture teaching method was rated best by 49% of students followed by the group discussion method which was rated as second best (19%). Case studies and brainstorming were the least-preferred methods (4% and 0% respectively). Lecturers should ensure that maximum information is transferred through the teaching methods that most appeal to students. The focus should be on enabling students to practically apply the lessons taught in everyday life.

Testo completoThis qualitative case study examined the perceptions of teachers and leaders in one Massachusetts school district about the actions of school leaders that engaged teachers in the reflective process. Utilizing Lave and Wenger's (1991) "Communities of Practice" as a framework enabled the researcher to examine the extent to which a social process of learning existed and whether the district's current structures and conditions engaged teachers in the reflective process. The findings from this study drew upon interview, observation, and document data to explore teacher and leader views regarding specific leadership actions (or inactions) that supported and facilitated teacher engagement in the examination of their practice and whether teachers viewed those actions as impacting their ability to reflect. Results indicated that school leaders implemented anticipatory and ongoing actions to create necessary preconditions, which fostered teacher reflection. Data revealed a district belief that reflective dialogue in pairs (teacher to teacher or teacher to administrator) or in groups (faculty meetings, grade level or departmental meeting) was important to educator growth. Administrators' actions, which engaged teachers in a reflective process, were perceived to be those associated with being an instructional leader. Recommendations include helping district leaders understand the role and design of collaborative reflection as well as the role of the principal in order to plan and implement effective professional learning, which develops reflective practitioners

Requirements definition, where engineers interact with clients to better know the organization`s activities and understand their needs, is a key process to the success of an information system. As such, requirements defined with clarity and according to the client`s needs are fundamental to the development of effective information systems for the organization. This dissertation proposes a method to help requirements engineers in the task of eliciting requirements. These requirements must be in accordance with the business as to improve the quality of the organization`s information systems. The proposed method integrates process modeling and business ontology. The work assumes that the integration of these perspectives provides a solid source of organization knowledge. Using this knowledge source, requirements engineers are empowered to define requirements that better fits the organization business. The integration of process modeling and business ontology is described in detail and exemplified by a case study.

Testo completoBackground: Diet-related chronic diseases and conditions include obesity, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, hypertension, some cancers, and osteoporosis. Interventions that focus on increasing nutrition knowledge, motivation, and healthy eating skills at the individual level alone have been ineffective at producing sustainable changes in eating behaviors. It is now widely recognized that multi-level interventions that support healthy eating practices are needed. Institutions of higher learning have opportunities to positively influence the food choices of large numbers of students for an extended period of time. To date, no evaluations or guidelines for implementing environmental interventions in a college setting have been published. Methods: A comprehensive and systematic process evaluation of a targeted health promotion intervention designed to transform the food environment at a four-year university was performed. Qualitative and quantitative methods were employed to assess the context, fidelity, dose delivered, dose received, and reach of intervention activities. Findings: Support and resources for intervention development and implementation were high. University administrators recognized a responsibility to provide a healthy eating environment for diners in their care at a formative age. Education, language, and cultural barriers negatively impacted fidelity. Perceived higher food costs described by some foodservice managers negatively impacted dose delivered. Dose received and reach were higher for students defining health in terms of absolute and specific eating behaviors compared to students defining health more moderately. Traditional entrees, make-your-own sandwiches, and pasta entrees had broader appeal than entrees with unfamiliar ingredients and vegan and vegetarian options. Research translation: Study findings were used to revise the program implementation manual. The manual includes operational guidelines for nutrition criteria, menu planning, promotional activities, and training of dining services staff and student employees. Strategies for addressing highlighted barriers to improve program implementation are also presented. Conclusion: A successful environmental intervention that has fidelity and reach has the potential to improve the eating habits of millions of young adults when implemented in college dining halls. This evaluation identified barriers that are likely to be common in other foodservice operations. More research is needed to determine if proposed strategies result in improved implementation, and ultimately, increased healthy eating behavior of college students.

Testo completoHistorically nurses have been strongly engaged in the political process, however in recent decades the profession has moved away from the policy arena. Without political engagement, issues that are important to the nursing profession are not addressed timely, if at all. One such issue is that of full practice authority for advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs). Well over 100 studies have been completed over the past 40 years showing the safe and quality care APRNs provide independently. Numerous well-respected, non-nursing organizations support the removal of state laws that impede the ability of APRNs to practice to the full extent of their education and training, particularly in light of the looming extinction of primary care physicians and the simultaneous increase in demand for primary care services (American Association of Retired People, 2011; Federal Trade Commission, 2012; Institute of Medicine, 2010; National Governor's Association, 2012). The purpose of this capstone project was to provide a website in which APRNs and APRN students could communicate quality information to legislators in support of full practice for APRNs in West Virginia during a legislative session in which a full practice bill was introduced. Website visitors who were APRNs or APRN students were asked to complete a survey on the website comparing their communication with legislators last year to their communication or intended communication, after they had been introduced to the website, during the current session. Findings included a strong statistical association between use of the website and communication with legislators along with a statistical association between use of the website and conveyance of quality information supporting full practice authority. The findings suggest that websites related to specific nursing issues could be a method to increase political involvement of nurses.
Schultz, Waldemar. "Training the student actor in the production process : a look at areas in which a director within a training institution can facilitate the learning process in a student actor". Thesis, Stellenbosch : Stellenbosch University, 1997. http://hdl.handle.net/10019.1/55769.
Testo completoENGLISH ABSTRACT: A thesis in which the author examines ways in which the director within an acting training institution may use the full-scale theatre production as a means of intense training for the students involved. The author contends that much of the theory and practical work taught within a classroom situation cannot be fully comprehended and/or brought to fruition if it is not tested and experienced within as realistic (pertaining to professional theatre) as possible a scenario, in the form of the student production. For the purposes of this thesis, the typical practical production process is used as a model and different areas in which the director may act as a teacher or catalyst to self-discovery are discussed largely in the order in which they might occur in practice. The author concludes that to provide intensive training through the production process would be a very time-consuming and costly endeavour, although very rewarding if it were at all possible. In addition to this, it would require a highly qualified director-trainer, with an holistic understanding of the 'theatrical art, who is prepared to invest a great amount of time and effort in such a production. Research for this thesis included reading material, practical directing and acting projects, and teaching practical acting in the capacity of a part-time lecturer at the University of Stellenbosch Drama Department.

Testo completoIncludes bibliographical references (leaf 107).
Three Dimensional Printing, a rapid prototyping technology, fabricates ceramic casting shells directly from 3-D CAD models. To create a shell, loose alumina powder in thin layers is joined by selectively depositing a colloidal silica binder. Firing fuses the silica to the alumina, and subsequent processing removes the unbound powder from the casting cavity. In some instances, it may be advantageous to perform powder removal before firing. This requires higher green strength than what is obtainable with the current binder. An alternative binder consisting of 18 vol.% colloidal silica co-dispersed with 10 vol.% acrylic emulsion in an aqueous medium was developed. The polymeric component imparts higher green strength to the part (3.6 vs. 0.4 MPa), yet decomposes during firing to minimize interference with the fusion of silica to alumina. The reduction of fired strength in samples printed with co-dispersions was less than 10%. Through designed experiments, performance of the co-dispersion was quantified by additional criteria such as shrinkage, warping, and binder stability. Average linear shrinkage in parts printed with co-dispersions was 0.05% after firing at 900°C. A simple model for warping, based on elastic response of a plate to free thermal strain, predicts that flat plates tend to warp into a paraboloid after firing. The experimental results correlated well with this prediction.

Fire is a common disaster; according to the 2015 fire statistics analysis of the National Fire Agency of Ministry of the Interior, fire incidence is rising year by year, and sound fire safety equipment reviews in the design phase can help reduce fire occurrence and thus, casualties and property losses after fire can be mitigated. However, current fire safety equipment reviews involve many regulations for various fire safety equipment types and there is no standardized reviewing process, making local fire departments use different reviewing processes, reviewers may even neglect review items and inspectors need to perform second reviews upon project completion. Thus, this research first establishes a standardized reviewing process through expert interview and literature review; common reviewing defects in the practice are considered in the process and the integrity and efficacy to the practice is verified by domain experts. In addition, many review items cannot be identified and evaluated from 2D drawings in fire safety equipment reviews in the design phase. Therefore, through expert interview, the research identifies the limitations of 2D drawings in a traditional reviewing process and common problems which cannot be solved using 2D drawings. Then, Building Information Modeling (BIM) is utilized to address these common problems by using its characteristics of spacial information, building information and quantity take-off functionality. BIM application to fire safety equipment reviews is incorporated in the proposed reviewing process and domain experts verify that the new process can shorten reviewing time, increase reviewing scopes and improve reviewing accuracy.

Abstract In this study, the CO2-selective PA TFC membranes with fixed-site carrier were prepared via the interfacial polymerization of water-soluble amine monomers including ethylenediamine (EDA), triethylenetetramine (TETA) and pentaethylenehexamine (PEHA) with acyl chloride monomer trimesoyl chloride (TMC) on the surface of asymmetric modified polysulfone (mPSf) membranes. The mPSf is prepared by immersed PSf support membrane into the ethylenediamine tetrakis (propoxylate-B-ethoxylate) surfactant solution to enhanced the hydrophilicity and filled the small pore on the surface to form a smooth surface. And then the Pebax1657® a block copolymer composed of flexible polyether and rigid polyamide, was coated on the PA TFC membranes via the spin-coating method to improve the separation performance. These TFC membranes were applied to CO2/N2 separation process. The effects of monomer structure, concentration of aqueous and organic solutions, feed pressure and water content on the gas transport properties including CO2 permeability, N2 permeability and CO2/N2 selectivity were investigated. Attentuated total reflectance-Fourier transform infrared (ATR-FTIR) spectroscopy, Field-Emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM) observation, Variable monoenergy slow positron beam (VMSPB), Microbalance and water contact angle measurement were used to characterize the chemical structure, morphology and hydrophilicity of the TFC membrane. From the results, the better interfacial polymerization condition is 0.1M aqueous solution immersion and 0.001M organic solution contact. In this interfacial polymerization condition, the Pebax/EDA-TMC/mPSf membrane was prepared by EDA and TMC, its CO2 permeance and CO2/N2 selectivity is 52.98GPU and 157.7, respectively. Compared with EDA monomer, PEHA is more appropriate for the TFC membrane preparation. Because the facilitated transport mechanism is increase linear as the amine group content. Thus Pebax/PEHA-TMC/mPSf membrane CO2 permeance and CO2/N2 selectivity is 134.2GPU and 113.5, respectively. Under the low feed pressure (0.1bar) test, the facilitated transport mechanism efficiency can be increase, and then enhanced the CO2 permeance to 728.9 GPU and CO2/N2 selectivity to 273.2 for Pebax/PEHA-TMC/mPSf membrane. Because the competitive adsorption, the separation performance is decrease significantly for 15%CO2/85%N2 mixing gas test.

Learning the use of multi-disciplinary knowledge to develop cross-discipline applications has become one of popular interdisciplinary research areas. In this research, we use information technology to provide effective assistance in the application of building maintenance. The processes of disassembling and reassembling building elements are quite complex and require professional skills. We hope to optimize the disassembling and reassembling processes by utilizing Building Information Model, ontology and 3D modeling techniques, contributing to the maintenance, repair and reconstruction of buildings. Based on the life cycle of a building, this paper proposes a process to work with building information model and establish building structure ontology, maintenance ontology, and reconstruction ontology. We used the main house of a traditional Taiwanese three-section compound as a case study. The 3D models were created from the digital data of building where every architectural element was tagged. Assisted by ontologies and 3D models, we can more clearly express geometric, spatial and geographic information that relate to the maintenance of the building. We proposed a space-based extendable ontology for different structures of buildings to allow the addition of building elements. In addition to providing useful information for building maintenance, we hope to improve the preservation, maintenance, education and inheritance of historical monuments in the future by preserving and using their digital data in our system to make the development of cultural heritage preservation sustainable.

Reviewing domestic related researches about dialogue, most of them focused on its effectiveness. This research focused on how to facilitate the learning of dialouge. We firstly reviewed the references about “learning” and “dialogue”; and then described the action research process of how Systems Thinking and Organizational Lab designed the feedback mechanisms to facilite the learning process on dialogue for Company A. We also analyzed every feedback mechanisms about its effectiveness in this research. We found out that feedback mechanisms can facilitate the learning process on dialogue, and the reflective abiliy of the members is very important. Besides we could adopt different feedback mechanism to facilitate the learning effectiveness depending on the situation; therefore, we also made several suggestions on every feedback mechanisms for future adoption.

Online discussion, the common learning activity in e-learning, allows acquiring more knowledge and different opinions and ideas through interaction and exchange with others in the process to promote leaners’ cognition of learning issues and critical thinking ability. Socio-scientific issues (SSI) are a commonly discussed issue in the activity. Such issues involve in broad dimensions, show complicated contents, and have no standard answers. In the SSI discussion process, learners’ opinions and ideas play critical roles and are the critical factors in the discussion effectiveness. Accordingly, “Instant Perspective Comparison System (IPCS)” is designed in this study, expecting to present the differences in the opinions and ideas of both parties through visualization perspective comparison in order to facilitate the depth and width of learners’ thinking in the discussion process and promote the learning effectiveness of online discussion. With quasi-experimental study, 63 students of two G11 classes in a senior high school in Taipei City are randomly selected for the online discussion about “nuclear power generation”. 36 students of a class are randomly assigned as the experimental group with IPCS assisted online discussion, and 27 students of another class are randomly assigned as the control group with general online discussion to discuss the differences in learning performance and technology acceptance of learners between two groups. Furthermore, prior knowledge and computer-mediated communication (CMC) ability are regarded as the background variables to discuss the differenced in learning performance and technology acceptance of learners between two groups. What is more, lag sequential analysis (LSA) is also used for discussing the effective learning behavior model of learners in the experimental group. The research result shows that, in comparison with general online discussion, IPCS assisted online discussion could significantly facilitate leaners’ overall learning performance and sub-item multiple perspectives. IPCS could also promote the learning performance of learners with low CMC ability as well as enhance the complexity of the discussion content so as to more deeply comprehend and understand the discussion issue. In terms of technology acceptance, both groups do not achieve remarkable statistical differences and present generally high technology acceptance. However, learners in the experimental group show higher average scores on technology acceptance than those in the control group, revealing learners’ positive and satisfactory attitudes towards IPCS. According to the qualitative interview data and the behavior analysis in the learning process, functions of multiple calculation and perspective comparison could facilitate the comprehension of discussion content. When a learner is able to focus the thinking on different cutting points of the same issue or review the discussion content after browsing the post information, IPCS would effectively facilitate learners’ learning performance during online discussion. Based on the research result, suggestions for the improvement of IPCS teaching and Moodle discussion as well as further research directions are proposed in this study. Overall speaking, discussion learning, natural language processing, social network, and data visualization are combined in this study to develop IPCS for the innovative and effective learning of technology assisted online discussion. It would contribute to facilitating online discussion in e-learning.
