The water mist is first characterized without flame : measurements of droplets diameters, droplets density and mass flow rate are performed. Then, the temperature field within the flame is established, without and then with water mist. Absorption fields and diffusion coefficients for two wavelengths are also determined in order to determine the relative contribution of absorption and diffusion processes. The knowledge of these experimental fields allows for the calculation of radiative flux towards the fuel surface with a Discrete Ordinates Method algorithm. Computed radiative flux values are compared with experimental values. Tomographic images of the mist-flame interaction flow are obtained. A PIV treatment of these images allows for the determination of droplets speed fields in order to get a better understanding of the dynamic interaction between the droplets and the flame. The study also shows that the introduction of steam within the flame has a chemical effect

This thesis work was carried out in the frame of the European research project Astrre, with the purpose of developing an engineering computer-aided code, for designing water spray curtain protection systems, against fire radiation in hydrocarbon industries mainly. Modeling and experimental studies of radiative heat transfer through the two phases (poly disperse water droplets and water vapor mainly) of the spray are analysed here. The radiative transfer model developed in planar and two-dimensional geometries, is characterized by its rigorous formulation, based on sub models providing a good compromise accuracy and computational time: optical properties of the water droplets are derived from the Mie theory for spherical particles, the gaseous phase behavior is handled by the correlated-k distribution method, and the radiative transfer equation in its integral form, is solved by a discrete ordinates method. The laboratory experimental tests, performed on water sprays provided by both a single nozzle and a series of nozzles, brought new and useful informations about the spectral behavior of such participating media, and also pointed out the main parameters involved in the attenuation ability of a water spray curtain for radiation shielding: the drop lets size and mass concentration, the water vapor and carbon dioxide molar fractions and the curtain width. A deeper analysis is carried out on the accuracy and CPU rime of the developed radiative model, by comparing its solutions to both benchmark cases from literature and, laboratory and large scale experimental results; an agreement is observed in different cases, with reasonable CPU rime for the model. The computer code Astrre 1. 0, developed in this research project, is now available in industry, and based for the radiative transfer analysis, on the model presented in this thesis report

The link between fine aerosol optical properties and their chemical composition is not yet well understood, and was investigated using long-term in situ observations performed at the “ATmospheric Observations in liLLe” platform from 2016 to 2020 using a combination of aerosol mass spectrometer, aethalometer, and nephelometer. Highly absorbing aerosols and a marked seasonality of the mass contribution of ammonium nitrate (AN) in spring were observed. We evidence that AN (35%) and carbonaceous aerosols (51%) are predominant regarding light extinction at 525 nm. Besides, a novel approach combining these in situ measurements to backtrajectories and emission inventories identifies a Brown Carbon (BrC) decrease within 24 hours after emission even during wintertime, pointing at a likely systematic underestimation of the contribution of residential heating (identified by the presence of BrC) to the aerosol absorption in the region

Galaxies are the building blocks of the Universe. Understanding their role in the cosmos translates into studying their emitted light from a multi-wavelength perspective as a large variety of physical processes inside them are responsible for the radiation we observe. In this work, a sample of galaxies in the COSMOS field with ultraviolet to far-infrared photometry and Ha, Hb, [OIII]5007 fluxes is studied using spectral energy distribution (SED) fitting software CIGALE. The photometry is firstly fitted along with the Ha fluxes to derive robust estimations of the stellar mass, star formation rate (SFR), and attenuation in the emission lines. A dust-corrected relation between SFR and [OIII]5007 luminosity is proposed. The dispersion in this relation is studied under the light of the interstellar medium (ISM) properties as the ionization parameter and gas-phase metallicity fitting the photometry and the Ha, Hb, [OIII]5007 fluxes. The nebular emission models inside CIGALE are updated to reproduce the nebular emission of these galaxies at z~1.6. These models are also used to create mock spectra catalogs for the Multi-Object Optical and Near-infrared Spectrograph (MOONS) collaboration. A sub-sample of galaxies in the COSMOS field is fitted covering ultraviolet to mid-infrared photometry. Mock spectra are created including either stellar continuum-only or stellar continuum and nebular emission. The power of including spectroscopic information along with the photometry in the SED fitting process is presented in this work in preparation for future large spectroscopic surveys that will open a new era in galactic and extragalactic astronomy

Remarkable properties of synthetic diamond (human soft tissue equivalence, chemical stability, non-toxicity) make this material suitable for medical application as thermoluminescent dosimeter (TLD). This work highlights the interest of this material as radiotherapy TLD. In the first stage of this work, we looked after thermoluminescent (TL) and dosimetric properties of polycristalline diamond made by Chemically Vapor Deposited (CVD) synthesis. Dosimetric characteristics are satisfactory as TLD for medical application. Luminescence thermal quenching on diamond has been investigated. This phenomenon leads to a decrease of dosimetric TL peak sensitivity when the heating rate increases. The second part of this work analyses the use of synthetic diamond as TLD in radiotherapy. Dose profiles, depth dose distributions and the cartography of an electron beam obtained with our samples are in very good agreement with results from an ionisation chamber. It is clearly shown that CVD) diamond is of interest to check beams of treatment accelerators. The use of these samples in a control of treatment with Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy underlines good response of synthetic diamond in high dose gradient areas. These results indicate that CVD diamond is a promising material for radiotherapy dosimetry
