Este libro es producto de un trabajo conjunto entre las diferentes unidades académicas y colegios que conforman la Universidad Nacional de La Plata. Es a su vez la síntesis de un proceso de discusión e intercambio entre diversas disciplinas, a partir de un acercamiento a los temas medulares que forman hoy la agenda de debate y trabajo en extensión universitaria, como la integralidad, la sistematización, la comunicación, la formación y la territorialidad. Los tópicos enunciados se consideran como dimensiones estratégicas en el proceso de jerarquización y curricularización vigente en nuestra Universidad. Partimos de una concepción de la extensión estatutariamente consagrada pero, al mismo tiempo, señalamos algunos ejes de debate que consideramos necesario profundizar. En esta dirección es ineludible reponer cómo la Universidad Nacional de La Plata es pionera en incorporar la extensión universitaria en su Estatuto de creación ya en el año 1905. Desde esa fecha fundacional hasta nuestros días, el recorrido de la vida universitaria ha sido diverso. No obstante, en la última Reforma del Estatuto, en el año 2008, se ratifica la función extensión en pie de igualdad con las otras funciones de la Universidad. Se han desplegado distintos esfuerzos a lo largo de los últimos años para jerarquizar y fortalecer la extensión universitaria. Es así como la UNLP, en tanto institución universitaria organizada en pos de la construcción de conocimiento, reconoce a la extensión como una de las funciones básicas del trabajo académico, al igual que la enseñanza y la investigación. En este sentido, vale preguntarse cuál es la especificidad de la extensión en relación a las otras funciones, y aquí radica un aspecto relevante que desplegará este libro: la extensión entendida en términos de vínculo dialógico representa un encuentro con actores sociales que la exceden pero que son constitutivos y necesarios de una lógica colectiva de producción de conocimiento. Desde esta perspectiva, el diálogo se inscribe en una concepción emancipadora y libertaria de la comunicación y el encuentro entre saberes y prácticas sociales diversas. This chapter explores the ecological regime of slavery and the land-use practices employed by farmers across the antebellum South. Despite the diverse ecologies and crop regimes of the region, most southern farmers employed a set of extensive agricultural techniques that kept the cost of farming down and helped circumvent natural limits on crop production and stock-raising. The use of shifting cultivation, free-range animal husbandry, and slaves to perform erosion control masked the environmental impacts of farmers’ actions, at least temporarily. Debates over westward expansion during the sectional crisis of the 1850s were not just about the extension of slavery, they also reflected practical concerns regarding access to new lands and fresh soil. Both were necessary for the continued profitability of farming in the South.

This book provides the information that will allow users to recover salt-degraded land with selected plantation timbers and ultimately to make a profit. The authors have drawn on their own experiences plus material from Australia, India, California and Israel where similar saline soil conditions occur. The authors also bring their extensive work in forest biotechnology to the book. The primary species of interest are in the genus Eucalyptus although other species, notably conifers, are referred to. Issues involved in defining the characteristics of sites where plantations may be established and their special management requirements are discussed. Options are presented for the selection and development of appropriate genotypes plus associated management practices. Monitoring of plantations is shown to be a vital management issue. The work includes a chapter on environmental benefits which will broaden the appeal beyond forest managers, extension officers and students of forestry to companies which produce CO2 but which have no prior knowledge of forestry.

This chapter examines how this militarization impacts Sri Lankan women. It begins with an overview of the status of women during and after the conflict. It describes Sri Lankan militarization, including the physical presence of military members, military involvement in civil society and commercial activities, and military influence in the education system. The chapter explores the gendered impacts of such militarization, ranging from a fear of sexual violence to the weakening of community trust and political activity in light of extensive surveillance programs. The chapter concludes with a discussion of the various strategies used by women to survive and retain agency in this militarized context.

La Revolución mexicana en tierras chiapanecas se ha observado, en muchos casos, desde la ausencia de modernización. Anhelo de instituciones que cumplieran el compromiso político del Estado, aunque ello haya evitado mirar la extensión de dicho Estado a través de asentar la nación en forma de mexicanización del territorio chiapaneco. Escribir sobre la educación física y el deporte en Chiapas es un reto académico que apunta a una parte de ese proceso de extensión del Estado gracias a la idea de transformar prácticas y hábitos de la población, especialmente la indígena y campesina. Romper los hábitos del pasado no es un simple discurso, sino que debía reflejarse en acciones que involucran los cuerpos de los ciudadanos con la finalidad de construir una nación homogénea en lo físico y lo cultural. Discurso y logro de objetivos no siempre son coincidentes; sin embargo, los años posrevolucionarios muestran la efervescencia de ideas sobre la regeneración física y la higienización social de prolongado aliento en la sociedad chiapaneca.

Abstract (sommario):

This chapter explores efforts to develop agricultural programs that would allow the camps to grow or raise most of the food consumed by Japanese Americans. This was a particularly important goal because wartime rationing and military demands limited food supplies. However, it was also quite challenging, as most of the camps were located on arid land with short growing seasons and variable soil quality. Even the most experienced farmers found it difficult to grow crops on marginal land. In addition to weather and soil problems, the WRA encountered labor shortages, resistance from local municipalities, and wartime mandates. While the camps did not produce all of their food, they did develop an extensive agricultural program with significant yields.

The Norths were a large, gifted, and extraordinarily successful family. They are also extremely well documented: Roger North wrote an autobiography and lives of three of his brothers, and these are supplemented by extensive family correspondence. Ten siblings reached adulthood, and nine of them enjoyed enduring bonds of affection and mutual support. The tenth was the eldest son and heir, at odds with his siblings throughout their lives. The chapter shows how the second son, Francis, took over the heir’s responsibilities, advancing the careers of his younger brothers and finding husbands for his sisters, and how the others also provided generous mutual support. It explores too the factors behind the lifelong rift between the heir (who eventually inherited as Lord North) and the others. The North family provides a striking example of both sibling bonds and sibling rivalries.
