Abstract (sommario):
The discussion highlights the need to distinguish between perceptions and the experiences implicated by perceptions, noting that Coliva’s framework makes perception irrelevant to justified belief, except for being the contingent means by which we are furnished with experiences that are the real source of justified belief. It then addresses two issues concerning the problem of cognitive locality. The problem concerns what enables us rationally to suppose that our perceptual experiences mostly put us in touch with reality. The issues addressed are: (1) whether, assuming that there is a problem of cognitive locality, Coliva’s Moderate position adequately addresses it; and (2) whether Coliva gives us enough to make sense of the claim, central to the Moderate position, that certain background presuppositions are constitutive of empirical rationality.

Abstract (sommario):
Purpose – The aim of the paper is to determine the perception of extended warranty when communicated by retailer during the sales promotion of durable products (e.g. refrigerators). We consider perception as five signals or conceptual dimensions in retail context. The research question is: What perception creates the extended warranty? The dimensions studied can increase or decrease the value and therefore attractiveness of the product. In this sense, extended warranties are a tool that retailers can use to change customers’ attitudes towards a product. There is little primary research that shows how communication of extended warranties influences customer perception and which signals are relevant to customers and retailers. Research methodology – A survey was conducted on a sample of 180 respondents. The measurement model includes extended warranty as a construct with five observed variables related to customer sentiment (risk relief, no cost, quality, price and brand). Each sentiment signal is tested as a separate hypothesis. The model was tested with SEM and CFA was used to interpret the data. Findings – In advertising theory, the extended warranty is seen as a signal of better quality and reliability, but we have shown that it creates a sense of risk relief in the purchase decision. Research limitations – Extended warranties can give rise to perceptions other than those examined in the measurement model. For different categories of consumer goods, the warranty features can be perceived differently. Practical implications – Retailers design promotional activities by communicating extended warranty to customers. As a result, they do not perceive promoted object as a more expensive due to warranty provision, even though it offers value to customers. Originality/Value – The originality of the article lies in the different perceptions that arise when customers are confronted with an extended warranty as part of the product promotion in a store. The empirical model proposes a construct of perception of the extended warranty mediated by a unique combination of signals such as risk relief, no cost sentiment, quality, price, and brand value. Only two signals, namely risk relief and quality, influence purchase intention.

Abstract (sommario):
South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol's statement on nuclear acquisition resonates throughout the United States, raising speculations about his intent. Although the U.S. has made strides to reassure South Korea by establishing the Nuclear Consultative Group in 2023, the South Korean public's heightened threat perception of North Korea has neither been assuaged nor translated into support for the U.S. extended deterrence. This situation contradicts existing literature, which posits that a state's restraint on nuclear armament can be attributed to the security guarantee provided by its nuclear ally. To resolve this puzzle, this study explores the nature of the South Korean public's threat perception and the factors determining its support for the U.S. extended deterrence. Empirical analyses demonstrate that South Korean public's threat perception of North Korea is substantially high in both progressive and conservative blocs. However, South Koreans would rather develop their own nuclear weapon than rely on extended deterrence.

Abstract (sommario):
In this article, we propose a conformal model for 3D visual perception. In our model, the two views are fused in an extended 3D horopter model. For visual simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM), an extended Kalman filter (EKF) technique is used for 3D reconstruction and determination of the robot head pose. In addition, the Viola and Jones machine-learning technique is applied to improve the robot relocalization. The 3D horopter, the EKF-based SLAM, and the Viola and Jones machine-learning technique are key elements for building a strong real-time perception system for robot humanoids. A variety of interesting experiments show the efficiency of our system for humanoid robot vision.

Abstract (sommario):
Learning temporal abstractions which are partial solutions to a task and could be reused for other similar or even more complicated tasks is intuitively an ingredient which can help agents to plan, learn and reason efficiently at multiple resolutions of perceptions and time. Just like humans acquire skills and build on top of already existing skills to solve more complicated tasks, AI agents should be able to learn and develop skills continually, hierarchically and incrementally over time. In my research, I aim to answer the following question: How should an agent efficiently represent, learn and use knowledge of the world in continual tasks? My work builds on the options framework, but provides novel extensions driven by this question. We introduce the notion of interest functions. Analogous to temporally extended actions, we propose learning temporally extended perception. The key idea is to learn temporal abstractions unifying both action and perception.

Abstract (sommario):
Young healthy adults can hear tones up to at least 20 kHz. However, clinical audiometry, by which hearing loss is diagnosed, is limited at high frequencies to 8 kHz. Evidence suggests there is salient information at extended high frequencies (EHFs; 8 to 20 kHz) that may influence speech intelligibility, but whether that information is used in challenging listening conditions remains unknown. Difficulty understanding speech in noisy environments is the most common concern people have about their hearing and usually the first sign of age-related hearing loss. Digits-in-noise (DIN), a widely used test of speech-in-noise perception, can be sensitized for detection of high-frequency hearing loss by low-pass filtering the broadband masking noise. Here, we used standard and EHF audiometry, self-report, and successively higher cutoff frequency filters (2 to 8 kHz) in a DIN test to investigate contributions of higher-frequency hearing to speech-in-noise perception. Three surprising results were found. First, 74 of 116 “normally hearing,” mostly younger adults had some hearing loss at frequencies above 8 kHz. Early EHF hearing loss may thus be an easily measured, preventive warning to protect hearing. Second, EHF hearing loss correlated with self-reported difficulty hearing in noise. Finally, even with the broadest filtered noise (≤8 kHz), DIN hearing thresholds were significantly better (P < 0.0001) than those using broadband noise. Sound energy above 8 kHz thus contributes to speech perception in noise. People with “normal hearing” frequently report difficulty hearing in challenging environments. Our results suggest that one contribution to this difficulty is EHF hearing loss.

Abstract (sommario):
During the COVID-19 pandemic, healthcare workers played a significant role in minimizing the maximum spread of the virus. This study aims to investigate the relationship between healthcare workers’ attitudes, subjective norms, perceived behavioral control, perceived effectiveness of the pandemic, risk perception of the COVID-19 pandemic, and willingness to treat COVID-19 patients in Lahore, Pakistan. However, the extended theory of planned behavior was applied and included two key constructs (perceived effectiveness and risk perception of the COVID-19 pandemic). Data were collected from 253 male and female respondents working in public, private, and semi-government hospitals. Structural equation modeling (SEM) was applied to test the proposed hypotheses. Overall, the findings show that healthcare workers’ attitudes, social norms, and perceived behavioral control significantly impact healthcare workers’ willingness to treat COVID-19 patients. In contrast, perceived effectiveness and risk perception of the pandemic showed a negative effect. The results suggested that healthcare workers showed positive attitudes, subjective norms, and perceived behavioral control to COVID-19 patients. On the other hand, due to the virus novelty, effectiveness and risk perception of the pandemic was very high, which shows that healthcare workers feel stressed and scared to treat COVID-19 patients.

Abstract (sommario):
Detection of the extent of common values in a cohesive space crew has become an important trend in modern space psychology. It is known from the works of Ch. Osgood that the semantic differential scale is a reliable way to obtain objective information on the emotional attitudes towards a topic of interest. Within the frame of the Russian space experiment “Interactions” on the International Space Station (ISS), a computerized survey, the Personal Self-Perception and Attitudes (PSPA), was developed for analyzing the subjects’ emotional attitudes toward their social environment. In the course of the PSPA procedure, the crewmembers rate each other and themselves (in the past, present, and future) using the criteria previously personally chosen. These criteria should be regarded as their personal values. A total of 30 subjects have already completed the study on board the ISS. The main tasks of the study are: (1) to define individual and group values and the extent of group identification reflected in sharing these values; (2) to determine the impact of cross-cultural factors on mutual perceptions and self-perceptions in space crews and with the Mission Control Center (MCC); (3) to study changes in the space crews’ group cohesiveness and structure as they are exposed to the stress of the extended space mission environment. The data obtained indicate an increase in a “psychological distance” between the crew and the MCC personnel versus increased crew cohesion. The results gained made it possible to identify the most significant categories of values common to the subjects from the professional cosmonaut group. The priority of these shared values for each subject is an important condition for the formation of a cohesive crew.

Abstract (sommario):
Against a stream of culturally oriented scholars some scholars in aesthetics, such as Arthur Danto and Noel Carroll, have maintained that there is a sense of “seeing” and visual recognition that does not depend upon historical and cultural practices. This essay shows that Danto’s assumption of a difference between a “core” and an “extended” form of perception and visual recognition should be rejected. The underlying argument of my considerations in this essay is the following: the distinction between a “pure” and an “extended” perception or visual perception is untenable, since, as a phenomenological reflection can reveal, our normal mode of perception is always extended. In this vein, it is argued here that there is, after all, only one mode of perception and that Danto’s position is based on abstractions from the real phenomenon. Consequently, whereas Danto maintains that it makes sense to talk about a “natural” form of seeing, this essay argues that “seeing” is itself a culturally defined way of comportment, and that assumptions about naturalistically defined perceptual core processes turn out to be idealized constructions.

Abstract (sommario):
Business intelligence (BI) is a vital component for businesses of all scales, offering actionable insights crucial for timely decision-making. This technology has become integral across diverse enterprises. Recognizing the factors influencing BI adoption is imperative, and this article employs the organization, complexity, knowledge, technology, user perception and experience, economic, environmental, and social (OCKTUEES) framework to identify key aspects. Building upon the TOE framework, it pinpoints significant variables, emphasizing the importance of factors like user perception and experience, technology, social, economical, and environmental. Employing structural equation modelling on primary data yields actionable insights to address BI adoption challenges. Analysis reveals the user perception and experience, technology, social, economic, and environmental as the top factors. However, the organization appears vulnerable, necessitating a mitigation strategy for successful BI adoption. The study predicts insignificant variables requiring mitigation, such as high costs, inadequate resources, organizational size, security and privacy concerns, risk of open-source adoption, and perception of analytics impacting jobs. This research aids those navigating the BI implementation journey.

Abstract (sommario):
By examining the perception of a responsible gambling strategy, this study developed an extended model of goal-directed behavior (EMGB) with respect to the behavioral intentions of casino visitors. The results of the EMGB, which uses structural equation modeling, indicate that desire had the strongest relationship with casino visitors’ intention to gamble, followed by positive anticipated emotion, perceived behavioral control, perceptions of a responsible gambling strategy, negative anticipated emotion, and attitude. The perception of a responsible gambling strategy was also a significant predictor of both desire and behavioral intention, as casino visitors had positive perceptions of casinos that implemented responsible gambling strategies. Casino managers should consider a responsible gambling strategy as an important long-term business activity to increase casino visitor’s intention to gamble.

Abstract (sommario):
This study addresses the challenges faced by individuals with upper limb disadvantages in operating power wheelchair joysticks by utilizing the extended Function–Behavior–Structure (FBS) model to identify design requirements for an alternative wheelchair control system. A gaze-controlled wheelchair system is proposed based on design requirements from the extended FBS model and prioritized using the MosCow method. This innovative system relies on the user’s natural gaze and comprises three levels: perception, decision making, and execution. The perception layer senses and acquires information from the environment, including user eye movements and driving context. The decision-making layer processes this information to determine the user’s intended direction, while the execution layer controls the wheelchair’s movement accordingly. The system’s effectiveness was validated through indoor field testing, with an average driving drift of less than 20 cm for participates. Additionally, the user experience scale revealed overall positive user experiences and perceptions of the system’s usability, ease of use, and satisfaction.

Abstract (sommario):
It is unknown whether the ability to visually distinguish between faces and nonfaces is subject to a critical period during development. Would a congenitally blind child who gains sight several years after birth be able to acquire this skill? This question has remained unanswered because of the rarity of cases of late sight onset. We had the opportunity to work with five early-blind individuals who gained sight late in childhood after treatment for dense bilateral cataracts. We tested their ability to categorize patterns as faces, using natural images that spanned a spectrum of face semblance. The results show that newly sighted individuals are unable to distinguish between faces and nonfaces immediately after sight onset, but improve markedly in the following months. These results demonstrate preserved plasticity for acquiring face/nonface categorization ability even late in life, and set the stage for investigating the informational and neural basis of this skill acquisition.

ObjectivesTo cluster the adherence behaviours of patients with type 2 diabetes based on their beliefs in medicines and illness perceptions and examine the psychosocial, clinical and sociodemographic characteristics of patient clusters.DesignCross-sectional study.SettingA face-to-face survey was administered to patients at two family medicine clinics in the Midwest, USA.ParticipantsOne hundred and seventy-four ≥20-year-old, English-speaking adult patients with type 2 diabetes who were prescribed at least one oral diabetes medicine daily were recruited using convenience sampling.Primary and secondary outcome measuresBeliefs in medicines and illness perceptions were assessed using the Beliefs about Medicines Questionnaire and the Brief Illness Perception Questionnaire, respectively. Self-reported medication adherence was assessed using the Morisky Medication Adherence Scale. Psychosocial correlates of adherence, health literacy and self-efficacy were measured using the Newest Vital Sign and the Self-efficacy for Appropriate Medication Use, respectively. Two-step cluster analysis was used to classify patients.ResultsParticipants’ mean age was 58.74 (SD=12.84). The majority were women (57.5%). Four clusters were formed (non-adherent clusters: ambivalent and sceptical; adherent clusters: indifferent and accepting). The ambivalent cluster (n=30, 17.2%) included low-adherent patients with high necessity beliefs, high concern beliefs and high illness perceptions. The sceptical cluster (n=53, 30.5%) included low adherent patients with low necessity beliefs but high concern beliefs and high illness perceptions. Both the accepting (n=40, 23.0%) and indifferent (n=51, 29.3%) clusters were composed of patients with high adherence. Significant differences between the ambivalent, sceptical, accepting and indifferent adherent clusters were based on self-efficacy, illness perception domains (treatment control and coherence) and haemoglobin A1c (p<0.01).ConclusionsPatients with diabetes in specific non-adherent and adherent clusters still have distinct beliefs as well as psychosocial characteristics that may help providers target tailored medication adherence interventions.

Abstract (sommario):
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to determine the influences of consumers’ internal-oriented psychological factors (i.e. self- promotion, need for uniqueness, self-expression and self-monitoring) and external-oriented psychological properties (i.e. social identity and other-directedness) on the perception of customization and the sense of extended-self; further to identify whether the perception of customization and the sense of extended-self lead to purchase intention toward customized apparel products. Design/methodology/approach Data were collected through an online survey among college students in the USA, generating a valid sample size of 338 participants. Factor analysis and Structural Equation Modeling were utilized to test proposed hypotheses. Findings The results indicated that need for uniqueness and self-monitoring were significantly related to consumers’ perception of customization and the sense of extended-self, whereas impacts of self-expression and other-directedness were not significant. Furthermore, the results also confirmed that consumers’ perception of customization and the sense of extended-self were positively associated with purchase intention of customized apparel products. Originality/value This study investigates consumers’ psychological features that influence consumers’ buying intention of customized apparel products, which is the first attempt. The study results are insightful and beneficial for marketers to construct target consumer segmentation under different cultural and social settings.

Abstract (sommario):
The mirror puzzle related to the perception of mirror images as left–right reversed can be more fully understood by considering an extended problem that includes also the perception of mirror images that are not left–right reversed. The purpose of the present study is to clarify the physical aspect of this extended problem logically and parsimoniously. Separate use of the intrinsic frame of reference that belongs to the object and one that belongs to its mirror image always leads to the perception of left–right reversal when the object has left–right asymmetry; on the other hand, the perception of left–right nonreversal is always due to the application of a common frame of reference to the object and its mirror image.

Abstract (sommario):
Due to the COVID-19 crisis, it is more difficult for international students to complete their study abroad. There has been little discussion concerning international students' perspectives regarding their study plan during this health-related crisis. Based on the frameworks of risk perception theory and the extended Theory of Planned Behaviour, this study highlights returning home for studying as a health-protective behaviour stemming from international students' perceptions of COVID-19 risk. In other words, overseas students' behavioural intention is scrutinized through the lens of the risk perception. An online survey with random sampling method was administered to the Vietnamese students who were studying in the UK in February and March 2021. A total of 588 responses were collected for data analysis. The results reveal that international students' cognitive and affective risk perceptions are positively related to their attitude, subjective norms and perceived behavioural control over returning home for studying. There also exists a significant influence of both cognitive and affective risk perceptions on the students’ behavioural intention. Attitude, subject norms, and perceived behavioural control are considered significant mediators between risk perception and behavioural intention.

The proposed extended technology acceptance model investigates the role of website quality, service and product perception on consumers purchase intention towards wooden handicraft items online. Trust acts as a mediator to study its effect on consumer intention. The effect of website quality, service and product perception was analyzed for the technology acceptance model constructs, namely perceived ease of use and perceived usefulness. A total of 234 respondents were surveyed and data was analyzed using structural equation modelling technique. Service perception and product perception determine perceived usefulness whereas perceived ease of use is determined by website quality and service perception. The results show that trust has positive role in determining consumers’ purchase intention. Website quality, service and product perception determine trust, and they build consumers’ confidence in online shopping. Both seller and website should have effective strategies to build consumers’ trust. The research suggests that sellers can significantly surge consumers’ trust by improvising product and service perception, whereas the website can ensure consumers’ trust by increasing the quality of website and service perception.

Abstract (sommario):
Background: During the postpartum period, family planning (FP) can prevent about 30% of maternal mortality and 10% of child mortality if couples space their pregnancies more than 2 years apart. Conversely, closely spaced pregnancies within the first year postpartum increase the risks of preterm birth, low birth weight, and small-for-gestational-age babies. Objective: To determine the perception and practice of family planning in the extended postpartum period. Methodology: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted among women in the extended postpartum period, attending the Gynaecology clinic, family planning clinic, and infant welfare clinic of the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, Ikeja, Lagos. Information obtained includes socio-demographic data, spouse education, and income, knowledge of, attitude towards, and utilization of family planning methods along with the partner’s involvement in decision-making towards arrival at choice methods. The data obtained were processed and analyzed using SPSS version 16.0 Results: The majority of the respondents (92.7%) were aware of family planning but only 33.7% are currently using a modern method. The most known methods were condoms (72.4%) and injectable (60.5%) while the predominant source of information was the electronic media in 78.4% of respondents. About half of the respondents (53.1%) had their male partners using condoms while three-quarters used them to space children. Three-quarters of those women not currently on contraception intended to adopt a method anytime within the extended postpartum period. Only the progressive increase in infant age showed a statistically significant relationship with contraceptive use. Conclusion: Despite the high incidence of awareness of family planning, only one-third of the respondents were currently using a method. It was recommended that repackaged antenatal and postnatal health talks should address various methods of family planning and their safety

AbstractThere has been much written speculation about leaving the body on entering fully virtual space. However, it is clear that the only reason we can experience virtual reality is precisely because we are embodied. Transdisciplinary researcher and architectural artist Paula Strunden works at the intersection of the real and the virtual, exploiting our body's important conduits for complete sensory and visceral experience of augmented space.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract Background and aims Prior research indicates that swearing increases pain tolerance and decreases pain perception in a cold pressor task. In two experiments, we extend this research by testing whether taboo hand gesticulations have a similar effect. Methods Study 1 focused on males and females who, across two trials, submerged an extended middle finger (taboo) and an extended index finger (control) in ice water until discomfort necessitated removal. Study 2 focused exclusively on pain perception in males who, across three trials, submerged their hand, flat, with extended middle finger and with extended index finger, for 45 s each. Results In study 1 taboo gesticulation did not increase pain tolerance or reduce pain perception compared with the index finger control condition, as a main effect or as part of an interaction with condition order. While there was a gesture×gender interaction for pain tolerance, this was driven by an increased pain tolerance for the index finger gesture for women but not men. The results of study 2 again showed that taboo gesticulation did not lower pain perception, although it did increase positive affect compared with both non-taboo gesture conditions. Conclusions Taken together these results provide only limited evidence that taboo gesticulation alters the experience of pain. These largely null findings further our understanding of swearing as a response to pain, suggesting that the activation of taboo schemas is not sufficient for hypoalgesia to occur.

Abstract (sommario):
Parasuraman, Zeithaml, and Berry introduced SERVQUAL in 1998 as a scale to measure service quality. Since then, researchers have proposed several variations. This study examines the development of the tool. Marketing researchers have first challenged the conceptualization of a perceptions-expectations gap and have concluded that the performance-based measures are adequate to capture consumers' perception of service quality. Some researchers have argued that the five dimensions of the SERVQUAL scale only focus on the process of service delivery and have extended the SERVQUAL scale into six dimensions by including the service outcome dimension. Others have proposed that service quality is a multilevel construct and should be measured accordingly. From a sample of 467 undergraduate students data on service quality toward up-scale restaurants were collected. Using the structural equation approach, two measurement models of service quality were compared, the extended SERVQUAL model and the restructured multilevel SERVQUAL model. Analysis suggested that the latter model fits the data better than the extended one.

Abstract (sommario):
A set of perceived random events is given by a fuzzy random variable, and an estimation of real random variables is represented by a functional on real random variables. The perception-based extension of estimation regarding random events is introduced, extending the functional to a functional of fuzzy random variables. This paper discusses some conditions and various properties of the extended estimations, for example, monotonicity, continuity, linearity, sub-additivity/super-additivity, convexity/concavity. Several examples of the perception-based extended estimations are investigated. This paper analyzes the general cases, where the estimations do not have monotone properties, from the viewpoint of convexity/concavity. The results can be applicable to other estimations in engineering, economics and so on.

Abstract (sommario):
In order to explore the influence of driver’s characteristics in complex traffic flow, experienced, inexperienced attribution and the perception headway of the driver are introduced. Concurrently, an extended car-following model is established. The linear stability of the extended model is derived based on the control theory method, and obtains the stability conditions. This work verifies the impact of driver characteristics on traffic flow stability based on the open boundary simulation environment. The research results show that inexperienced driver will reduce the stability of traffic flow on complex roads, while experienced driver will improve the stability of traffic flow. Compared with the driver’s negative perception headway error, the positive perception headway error can improve the stability of traffic flow. More specifically, an experienced driver is good at predicting the state of the preceding vehicle, while the driver’s positive perception headway error tends to narrow the safe headway, and achieve the stability of traffic flow.

Abstract (sommario):
Background. The rapid proliferation of electronic health records (EHRs) in clinics has had mixed impact on patient-centered communication, yet few evaluated interventions exist to train practicing providers in communication practices. Aims. We extended the evidence-based Physician Asthma Care Education (PACE) program with EHR-specific communication strategies, and tested whether training providers with the extended program (EHR-PACE) would improve provider and patient perceptions of provider communication skills and asthma outcomes of patients. Method. A pilot randomized design was used to compare EHR-PACE with usual care. Participants were providers ( n = 18) and their adult patients with persistent asthma ( n = 126). Outcomes were assessed at baseline and 3- and 6-month postintervention, including patient perception of their provider’s communication skills and provider confidence in using EHRs during clinical encounters. Results. Compared with the control group, providers who completed the EHR-PACE program reported significant improvements at 3-month follow-up in their confidence with asthma counseling practices (estimate 0.90, standard error [ SE] 0.4); p < .05) and EHR-specific communication practices (estimate 2.3, SE 0.8; p < .01), and at 6-month follow-up, a significant decrease in perception that the computer interferes with the patient–provider relationship (estimate −1.0, SE 0.3; p < .01). No significant changes were observed in patient asthma outcomes or their perception of their provider’s communication skills. Discussion. Training providers with skills to accommodate EHR use in the exam room increases provider confidence and their perceived skills in maintaining patient-centered communications in the short term. Conclusion. Evidence-supported training initiatives that can increase capacity of busy providers to manage increased computing demands shows promise. More research is needed to fully evaluate EHR-PACE on patients’ health status and their perceptions of their provider’s care through a large-scale trial.

Abstract (sommario):
J. J. Gibson's ground theory of space perception is contrasted with Descartes’ theory, which reduces all of space perception to the perception of distance and angular direction, relative to an abstract viewpoint. Instead, Gibson posits an embodied perceiver, grounded by gravity, in a stable layout of realistically textured, extended surfaces and more delimited objects supported by these surfaces. Gibson's concept of optical contact ties together this spatial layout, locating each surface relative to the others and specifying the position of each object by its location relative to its surface of support. His concept of surface texture—augmented by perspective structures such as the horizon—specifies the scale of objects and extents within this layout. And his concept of geographical slant provides surfaces with environment-centered orientations that remain stable as the perceiver moves around. Contact-specified locations on extended environmental surfaces may be the unattended primitives of the visual world, rather than egocentric or allocentric distances. The perception of such distances may best be understood using Gibson's concept of affordances. Distances may be perceived only as needed, bound through affordances to the particular actions that require them.

Abstract (sommario):
Perception of one’s ability as a reader is a key construct for improving adolescent literacy outcomes, but this research has not yet been extended to students with disabilities. The current study attempted to address this research gap with a sample of 152 secondary students with and at risk for emotional and behavioral disorders (EBD). Results include a description of these students’ reader self-perceptions, a comparison to a larger sample of students without EBD, and exploration of variables associated with self-perceptions of reading ability. Demographic variables (e.g., sex, race), degree of behavior problems, and physiological states were significant predictors of self-perceptions. Discussion focuses on how practitioners can assess students’ self-perceptions to guide their instruction and on future directions for research.

Abstract (sommario):
Audiometric testing in research and in clinical settings rarely considers frequencies above 8 kHz. However, the sensitivity of young healthy ears extends to 20 kHz, and there is increasing evidence that testing in the extended high-frequency (EHF) region, above 8 kHz, might provide valuable additional information. Basal (EHF) cochlear regions are especially sensitive to the effects of aging, disease, ototoxic drugs, and possibly noise exposure. Hence, EHF loss may be an early warning of damage, useful for diagnosis and for monitoring hearing health. In certain environments, speech perception may rely on EHF information, and there is evidence for an association between EHF loss and speech perception difficulties, although this may not be causal: EHF loss may instead be a marker for sub-clinical damage at lower frequencies. If there is a causal relation, then amplification in the EHF range may be beneficial if the technical difficulties can be overcome. EHF audiometry in the clinic presents with no particular difficulty, the biggest obstacle being lack of specialist equipment. Currently, EHF audiometry has limited but increasing clinical application. With the development of international guidelines and standards, it is likely that EHF testing will become widespread in future.

Abstract (sommario):
The models of face perception mechanisms have been substantially extended recently by the results obtained with functional brain mapping studies. The current paper reviews the studies that help to define more precisely the functional organization of the distributed facial system. We explore the issue of independence versus interrelation of face identification and expression recognition; compare the mechanisms of static and dynamic faces perception, as well as face-in-context perception. We emphasize the importance of higher ecological validity of face perception and its brain mechanisms.

Abstract (sommario):
Decision making is conditioned by relevant information. This information very seldom has reliable numerical representation. Usually, decision-relevant information is perception-based. A question arises of how to proceed from perception-based information to a corresponding mathematical formalism. When perception-based information is expressed in natural language, the fuzzy set theory can be used as a corresponding mathematical formalism for decision analysis. However, perception-based decision-relevant information is not always sufficiently clear to be modeled by means of membership functions. In contrast, it remains at a level of some cloud images which are difficult to be caught by words. This imperfect information caught in perceptions cannot be precisiated by numbers or fuzzy sets and is referred to as unprecisiated information. Humans are able to make decisions based on unprecisiated visual perceptions. Modeling of this outstanding capability, even to some limited extent, becomes a difficult yet a highly promising research area. In this study, we use fuzzy geometry and the extended fuzzy logic to cope with uncertain situations coming with unprecisiated information. In this approach, the objects of computation and reasoning are geometric primitives which model human perceptions when the latter cannot be defined in terms of membership functions. For this aim, the fuzzified axioms of the incidence geometry are used. An approach to decision making with outcomes and probabilities described by geometrical primitives is developed. Examples of application of the approach to decision making on a short term investment decision and marketing decision are given. The obtained results prove the validity of the suggested approach.

Abstract (sommario):
Even during fixation, our eyes are in constant motion. For example, microsaccades are small (typically <1°) eye movements that occur 1~3 times/second. Despite their tiny and transient nature, our percept of visual space is compressed before microsaccades (Hafed ZM, Lovejoy LP, Krauzlis RJ. Eur J Neurosci 37: 1169–1181, 2013). As visual space and time are interconnected at both the physical and physiological levels, we asked whether microsaccades also affect the temporal aspects of visual perception. Here we demonstrate that the perceived interval between transient visual stimuli was compressed if accompanied by microsaccades. This temporal compression extended approximately ±200 ms from microsaccade occurrence, and depending on their particular pattern, multiple microsaccades further enhanced or counteracted this temporal compression. The compression of time surrounding microsaccades resembles that associated with more voluntary macrosaccades (Morrone MC, Ross J, Burr D. Nat Neurosci 8: 950–954, 2005). Our results suggest common neural processes underlying both saccade and microsaccade misperceptions, mediated, likely, through extraretinal mechanisms.NEW & NOTEWORTHY Here we show that humans perceive the duration of visual events as compressed if they are accompanied by microsaccades. Despite the tiny and transient nature of microsaccades, time compression extended more than ±200 ms from their occurrence. Moreover, the number, pattern, and temporal coincidence of microsaccades relative to visual events all contribute to this time misperception. Our results reveal a detailed picture of how our visual time percepts are altered by microsaccades.

Abstract (sommario):
People have raised their expectations for UAV performance due to the widespread use of UAVs in both military and non-military settings. One of the most significant fields of research right now is how to enhance UAVs’ endurance capabilities. Many birds in the wild have the ability to fly for extended periods of time or great distances using the wind, which is called energy harvesting. A seabird called an albatross can use the wind’s horizontal gradient on the water’s surface to generate energy. By gliding, they may fly for a very long time without flapping their wings, thus lowering their own energy consumption. Due to the albatrosses’ nostrils sensitive sensory nerves and sensitivity to environmental information, such as airflow, the albatrosses can modify its flight attitude. Similar to this, real-time dynamic planning of the trajectory can only be done for UAVs in order to realize energy-capturing flying if correct and real-time wind field information is obtained. As a result, developing wind field sensing technology is crucial to the realization of energy-capturing gliding. In this study, we built a 3D wind field sensing system with wind vane sensor and pitot tube. Wind tunnel tests were used to calibrate and alter it. The system’s operation is initially validated by real flight, which may give environmental information, enabling UAVs to utilize the wind field as a reference for planning their flight paths.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract This contribution presents the proceedings from a series of transversal university projects, addressing bodily forms of knowledge concerning the perception, inquiry, and conception of architecture. It retraces the phases of different manners of investigation over a threesemester teaching cycle, addressing perceptions and experiences of architectural spaces. The proceedings of, and results from the seminar cycle are documented and framed with an introduction to the applied methods and ways of working as well as their reflection and evaluation. These varying approaches all center around the questions of how to bring body-based and incorporated knowledge concerning architectural space to awareness and how attention to sensual and corporeal ways of perception can be increased. Thus, it investigates how the spectrum of design methods in architecture can be extended in order to actively include bodily forms of knowledge in the anticipation of spatial experience in the design process. The article introduces a concept of »Architecture Imagery« as a way to include bodily ways of knowing and body-based practices in the perception and memory of lived experience and the process of architectural design.

Abstract (sommario):
Slow lifestyles have become a way for individuals to reduce the amount of stress in their lives. Moreover, along with wellness and slow food, slow life seeking is emerging as an area of study, though little research has been studied at Slow Life Festivals (SLFs) associated with consumers’ wellness pursuits, slow life seeking, and perceptions of slow food. To address this gap, this study examined visitors’ decision-making processes using an extended theory of planned behavior (ETPB) by incorporating wellness pursuit, slow life seeking, and perceptions of slow food at an SLF. Thus, this study developed a theoretically comprehensive framework by applying field survey. Results revealed significant impacts of visitors’ wellness pursuits and slow life seeking on their decision-making, indicating that wellness and slow life were important factors to consider for SLF management. The research further identified the perception of slow food as a mediator in predicting behavioral intentions. Results further demonstrated a strong relationship between wellness pursuit and perception of slow food for highly attached visitors while revealing a significant relationship between slow life seeking and perception of slow food for less attached visitors. Consequently, this study shed significant light on our understanding of why visitors intend to revisit SLFs.
