Abstract (sommario):
Memetics is a Darwinian approach to evolution of culture proposed in late 1970s. This thesis proposes an approach to Memetics, which is an effort to overcome some of the problems involved. It is argued in this thesis that units of cultural evolution are functional abstraction of physical reality and are realized within the boundaries of our cognitive processes. The boundaries of human cognitive processes are defined by Clark and Chalmers (1998) in their extended cognition hypothesis according to which, human cognition is understood as a part of the cultural environment. Therefore human cognition and cultural environment can best be understood by studying them together. As for identifying these units, an extended functionalist approach has been proposed and an empirical cultural transmission study has been conducted and explored in the thesis.

Abstract (sommario):
This thesis focuses on the design and use of Extended Reality (XR) environments for supporting autistic children regarding sensory perception. While autism XR research, ranging from Augmented Reality (AR) to Virtual Reality (VR), is promising to extend practitioners' interventions, it mainly addresses the socio-emotional abilities of children with mild autism. Yet, common interventions address the entire spectrum by targeting a range of abilities, including sensory perception. Based on these observations, I conducted 34 interviews with autism stakeholders to compare their practical needs with the literature XR uses and designs. Findings confirmed the presence of a research gap, provided a set of XR guidelines, and called for further exploration of XR sensory and mediation approaches. Furthermore, to better consider moderate to severe autism, AR seemed more suited than VR, as allowing children to keep contact with the real environment and their usual practitioner. To examine this objective, two research endeavors were conducted within clinical settings in collaboration with practitioners. In the first part of this thesis, I investigated the possibility of using sensory and mediation XR approaches to support reassurance and to reinforce the child-practitioner relationship. To that end, an AR application called Magic Bubbles was created to complement usual sensory interventions, such as Snoezelen and Sensory Integration Therapy, which are sometimes limited in terms of flexibility or access. A user-centered design process was conducted for a day hospital setting with two psychologists and one psychiatrist, and validated by a clinical team of eleven practitioners. After acceptability and usability testing with ten children with neurodevelopmental disorders, a long-term field study with seven autistic children confirmed its potential for reassurance and social interaction. Moreover, using a grounded theory approach, I built a categorization of children's experiences, which could inform future autism XR research. To complement these findings, VR was explored to extend another type of sensory intervention called music therapy. Two applications were created which respectively focus on the music performance in collaboration with a music therapist at a music conservatoire, and the music dialogue in collaboration with two psychologists at the day hospital. Preliminary tests with three autistic children were positive in terms of their acceptability and engagement. In order to make the multisensory XR spaces previously presented even more reassuring, they must be adapted based on a better assessment of the stimuli inducing negative or positive experiences among autistic individuals. In the second part of this thesis, I thus focused on using AR to assess the Atypical Auditory Functioning (AAF) of autistic children, in collaboration with a psychomotor therapist. Indeed, although AAF largely impacts the everyday life of autistic people, current sensory profiles and auditory exams prevent practitioners from testing various auditory stimuli in ecological settings. This makes it hard to differentiate between emotional and physical reactions towards sounds, and thus to develop appropriate sensory strategies. To address this issue, I started by developing a sound taxonomy being representative of autistic AAF through a systematic literature review. The items of the taxonomy were then validated, ranked, and enhanced, through an online questionnaire answered by 68 stakeholders. At last, an AR application was designed to perform such assessments. Future field tests are planned with autistic individuals at the therapist's office. The thesis concludes by drawing research perspectives based on the main research findings

Abstract (sommario):
This study investigates the effects on self-concepts of high school students who experienced an eight week outdoor education program. Specifically, multidimensional measures of self-concept were used to compare group and gender effects across the duration of the program as well as a follow-up period of eight weeks. Literature generally supports the assumption that outdoor education programs are effective for enhancing self-concepts of participants, although empirical research reports mixed results. This study uses a participation group (N=60) and a comparison group (N=58). The participation group (31 girls, 29 boys) consisted of Year 10 students who experienced the eight week outdoor education program which included residential living activities, farm work, outdoor camping and adventure components, as well as meditative and community development activities. The comparison group (24 girls, 34 boys) consisted of Year 10 students who continued normal school schedules for the duration of the outdoor program period. A Non-Equivalent Control Group Design (Campbell & Stanley, 1963) was employed, using the Self-Description Questionnaire-II (SDQ-II) self-concept measurement instrument (Marsh, 1990). The SDQ-II measures 11 scales and a total score. Data were collected concurrently for both participation group and comparison group at each of three stages (immediately prior to outdoor program, at conclusion of outdoor program, and eight weeks after conclusion of outdoor program). A repeated measure analysis of variance (ANOV A) was conducted for the participation group, for each of the eleven scales and total score of SDQ-II. Results for the participation group showed a significant increase in three self-concept scales (Parent Relations, Emotional Stability, General School) and Total Score and a significant decrease in scores for Same-Sex Relations scale, across the duration of the outdoor program. No significant retention effects were found for the follow-up period, while Total Score for this period significantly decreased. Gender differences within the participation group indicated boys' self-perceptions of Physical Appearance and Emotional Stability were significantly influenced more these same scales for girls, as a result of participation in the outdoor program. A repeated measures multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) was conducted for participation and comparison groups, for each of the eleven scales and total score of SDQ-II. Results comparing self-concept measure of participation and comparison groups reported five significant effects, all favouring the comparison group (Physical Appearance, Same-Sex Relations, General School, General Self, Total Score), across the duration of the outdoor program. These comparative group results indicate the outdoor program at best had no significant positive effects on the participants, both for the duration of the outdoor program and the follow-up period. Results of gender effects comparing all boys with all girls in the study supported empirical research which reports adolescent self-concept differences are generally consistent with gender stereotypes. Significantly higher scores in this study were found for boys in three scales (Physical Appearance, Emotional Stability, Math). Generally speaking, this study has found that a one-off outdoor experience of a long duration had no significantly positive results for the participants, for multidimensional measures of self-concept. Results from this study also indicate that consistent gender stereotypes for adolescent self-concept were not significantly influenced by participation in the outdoor program. Review of relevant research in this study highlights the need for robust research design and methodology. This will enable research in this area to be more validly compared and discussed. The scarcity of empirical research concerning retention effects and gender effects in outdoor education has been identified in this study, indicating needs for future research in these areas.

Abstract (sommario):
Purpose: Low citizen adoption rates jeopardize the success and proliferation of e-government systems. This study aims to understand how the perception of environmental sustainability (ES) can influence a citizen’s intention to use e-government systems. Design/methodology/approach: In a case study in Peru, the technology acceptance model (TAM) adoption model is extended with the construct of ES and evaluated with structural equation modeling. An 18-element, in-person survey was constructed and administered to citizens of Lima, Peru who had prior exposure to e-government systems. Findings: The results show that citizens can be positively influenced to adopt e-government systems if they perceive that doing so will contribute to ES. Research limitations/implications: As this was a preliminary study, further research should focus on specific, as opposed to general, e-government systems, as well as encompassing a broader cross section of the population. Practical implications: Administrators of e-government initiatives can consider public-interest factors, alongside of the common self-interest factors, when looking to improve adoption rates of e-government systems. Originality/value: This is the first time that TAM has been extended with the construct of ES.

Abstract (sommario):
Previous research has established a relationship between exercise and cognition, with more emphasis on this ascertained link, being made on the effects of long term and endurance exercise on cognition. However, enhanced worker effectiveness relies on a strong acute collaboration of physical and cognitive performance during task execution. As a result, the purpose of this study was to examine the acute effects of extended aerobic exercise on visual perception, working memory and motor responses, and to achieve this 24 participants (12 males and 12 females) aged between 18 and 24 participated in a 2 bout cycling exercise. The experimental condition had cycling resistance set at 60 percent of each individual’s maximum aerobic output and the control condition had zero cycling resistance, where three cognitive tasks were performed at 10 minute intervals during the cycling exercise. The results showed that exercise did not affect any significant changes on the cognitive performance measures over the entire cycling duration, as well as during the exercise phase (cycling with resistance). However, visual perception improved significantly (p<0.05) immediately after exercise. This led to the conclusion that moderate to high intensity exercise when performed for an extended duration, has selective effects on certain cognitive performance measures, with the time at which the performance is measured during the exercise being a relevant factor to be considered for maximum activation effects of the exercise.

Abstract (sommario):
Widespread adoption of mobile payments has not taken place despite a decade of trials in various countries based upon a mobile phone handset that does not have the technology capabilities of today’s smart phones. However, significant technology developments have led to widespread consumer adoption of smart phones and other devices that may now provide the foundation for wider consumer adoption of mobile payments. Understanding UK consumer cultural perceptions on the new phenomenon is one of the first steps to influencing purchase behaviour. This thesis is based upon a post-positivist philosophy and a social constructionist ontology that explores UK consumer perceptions of mobile payments through human cognitive and affective responses of consumer payment behaviour as these influence attitude that leads to adoption. However, UK consumer interest in mobile payments on its own is unlikely to be enough to change payment behaviour, although meeting specific payment needs can motivate consumers to amend their payment behaviour that can lead to widespread adoption. Inductive empirical research is used to explore UK consumer perceptions of mobile payments through sequential mixed methods. A questionnaire is used as the 1st research instrument with closed questions that explore various aspects of consumer interest in the mobile payments phenomenon. The key themes identified from the numerical analysis of the questionnaire data are used to guide the semi-structured interviews. Content analysis is then undertaken on the qualitative interview data from which new knowledge on consumer perceptions of mobile payments is identified. Analysis of the empirical data suggests that UK consumers have significant technology and security concerns which negatively affect consumer interest. Despite these concerns, UK consumers demonstrate interest in the mobile payments phenomenon when perceived usefulness benefits are identified. The perceived usefulness positively influences attitude that overcomes perceived risks which can lead to amended consumer payment behaviour and widespread adoption. In addition, UK consumers have a significant lack of trust towards unknown organisations as well as new market entrants although there is an increased level of trust in mobile payments provided by UK banks as well as other established organisations. This research fills an important gap in existing literature on consumer payment behaviour as it explores UK consumer cultural perceptions of the mobile payments phenomenon using smart phones and contactless consumer devices; whereas earlier consumer payment research is based upon a mobile phone handset that does not have the technology capabilities of today’s smart phones and has an Asian and Nordic cultural focus. Furthermore, this research provides UK empirical evidence that refines and extends existing research through the use of sequential mixed methods whilst adding to the understanding of UK consumer attitudes related to UK payment instruments.

Abstract (sommario):
For adult learners of a second language, the similarities and differences in acoustic properties between their native language and the language they are learning can affect how they perceive the sounds of the new language. How learners perceive these acoustic properties will directly affect their ability to communicate. According to the Perceptual Assimilation Model (PAM) (Best 1995), learners will perceive the sounds of a language that is new to them based on how similar or different the sounds are from the learner’s native language. Between the English and Spanish language, there are some sounds that share acoustic properties and others that show contrast. Such is the case with the stop consonants /p/, /t/, /k/, /b/, /d/, and /g/. These consonants exist in both Spanish and English, and though they are similar, there are important differences in how they should be perceived and produced. Despite the differences, these sounds are likely to be confused by L2 learners due to similarity in acoustic cues. This study will use Best’s Perceptual Assimilation Model (PAM) as a framework. It will test the L2 perception of native English-speaking adults who are L2 learners of Spanish, have spent between 18 and 24 months speaking the target language as Latter-day Saint (LDS or Mormon) missionaries in the United States, and who are also currently university students enrolled in an upper-level Spanish course. It will focus on their perception of the acoustic cue of Voice Onset Time (VOT) of stop consonants.

Abstract (sommario):
Mainstream spatialization techniques are often oriented towards the reproduction of point sources; extension remains a relatively unexplored topic. This thesis advocates that extended sources are yet expressive objects that could contribute to the richness of spatialization practices, especially in the field of music. We’ll decompose this thesis in three hypotheses. A perceptive one, who postulates that extended sources are perceptually relevant, i.e., that they offer the possibility of varying new sound attributes and that the listener is sensitive to these variations. An analytical one, who proposes that the most common spatialization techniques focus to point sources is arbitrary and that other source’s models can be considered. And an operational one, who suggests that it’s possible to create tools for composers so they can handle and musicalize extended objects. To confirm these hypotheses, we’ll formalize the auditory and musical properties of extended sources and we’ll propose concrete methods for their analysis and synthesis. This work will be considered as part of the HOA library, a set of low-level spatialization tools we’ve founded for the purpose of experimentation. We’ll describe the specificities of this library and see how its architecture and its different modules allow the generalization of ambisonics to new practices away of punctuality

Abstract (sommario):
Time to collision (TTC), Time TimeHeadway (TH), Distance of Gruyer (DG), Risk estimator with uncertainties andmultidimensional model (RIMUM)).
The use of automated vehicle (AV) technologies such as self-driving cars is becoming more prevalent in daily life. These technologies aim to create fully- connectedtransportation systems, still there are concerns that remain unaddressed. Studieshave shown that AVs can reduce collisions, ease traffic congestion, and providetransportation options for those who lack access. Yet, car manufacturers havealready implemented certain automated features in their vehicles. One importantaspect of AVs is improving communication between the vehicle and roadside. The objective of this study is to investigate the adaptability and suitability of theChain branch leaf (CBL) communication model in cooperative systems to exam-ine its impact on traffic responses. Additionally, the research aims to determinethe role of Roadside Units and the effectiveness of multi-level perception in riskmitigation. The ultimate goal of this research is to improve communication andcollaboration between autonomous vehicles leading to safer and more efficient traf-fic flow. This thesis focuses on the estimation of obstacle attributes, the road, and theego-vehicle to improve the quality of service on the road through communication, localization, and perception functions. We propose architectures and communica-tion strategies that will take into account the information of surrounding vehiclesto optimize coverage and estimate collision risk at different levels including local, extended local, extended branch, and global.Subsequently, we use the most relevant metrics (Time to Collision (TTC), TimeHeadway (TH), Distance of Gruyer (DG), RISK (R), Risk estimator with Uncer-tainties and Multidimensional model (RIMUM)), to estimate the four (extended)collision risks. In optimal conditions first with perfect location and perception, and then the uncertainty scenario of perception with perfect location. Resultsshow that the extended risks allow better anticipation of the collision than thelocal risk.Furthermore, we have developed a new extended version of the Chain branch leaf-Gateway (CBL-G) model, which proves to be more efficient in terms of coverage. The hierarchical architecture of the model allows us to calculate collision riskswith greater accuracy. The different levels of risk allow us to identify potentiallydangerous situations earlier, which is considered to be very relevant for incidentprevention. In our future research projects, we plan to study other situations such as roadintersections, highway exits, and entrances, as well as roundabouts. Additionally,we would also like to explore cases where we are unable to locate nodes throughthe chain (such as passing through tunnels). And elaborate risk indicators thatexplore all key components (ego vehicle, driver, obstacle, road, and environment)

Abstract (sommario):
Audited financial statements are the most substantial source of information concerning bank loan decisions, and investors mainly base their investment decisions on the financial statements in combination with the audit report. The financial crisis brought attention to the existing expectation gap between auditors and stakeholders. An attempt to narrow the gap has been done by IAASB. The new standards require auditors to provide additional information in the audit report. The purpose of the study is to investigate how the extended audit report is perceived by Swedish bank directors. The study has a quantitative research strategy with an experimental design. The experiment includes one control group and seven experimental groups, and the participating Swedish bank directors amounted up to 122. An ANCOVA is performed to test the research questions regarding the bank directors’ perceptions and decisions. The empirical findings and analysis reveal that the disclosure of the assurance level has a positive impact on bank directors’ confidence in the financial statements, perceived quality of the audit report, perceived value of the information the audit report contains, as well as the probability of granting a credit. The results also indicate a significance for key audit matters (KAM) regarding the perceived value of information, meaning that the disclosure of KAM improves bank directors’ perceptions of the informational value the audit report contains. The disclosure of the materiality level does not appear to have a significant impact on the extending of the audit report, implying that a disclosure of the applied materiality level may not be beneficial for bank directors’ perceptions and decisions.

Abstract (sommario):

During the past years, wooden one and two family houses showed a higher growth rate on the German construction market compared to conventional material like brick and stone. Wood as construction material became more and more attractive. Furthermore, a growing demand on multifamily houses could be recognized, yet, wood has not been considered as an alternative in this field of application until now. Trying to understand the end-users attitudes towards wooden multifamily houses, this licentiate thesis aims at exploring German end-users’ perceptions of wooden multifamily houses.

To collect the necessary data, the Association Pattern Technique (APT) was applied, which is a two-stage method and has its foundations in the Means-End theory. In the first stage, 31 in-depth laddering interviews were carried out, which served as the base for the matrix-survey in the second stage, where 229 answers were received. Extending the existing method in the matrix-survey stage allowed for important additional data to be uncovered.

The results show that individuals associate certain product attributes with wooden multifamily houses and that these attributes are thought to entail specific consequences. These consequences are in turn linked with the personal values of the respondents. The most dominant perceptual orientations of different groups of respondents are shown and significant differences could be found in how individuals in German perceive wooden multifamily houses depending on age, income and habitation.

Abstract (sommario):
As musical and performance practices have evolved over the last half-century, the realm of the solo flautist has expanded to encompass an extensive array of emerging techniques and technologies. This research examines the impact of electronics on the flautist. It explores and confronts this expanding musicological nexus through forwarding the voice of the performer: defining the search for knowledge through the actuality of performance, reflection and narrative. The investigation is based around two recitals of music for flute with electronics, incorporating ideas of spatialisation and interactive live electronics. These recitals presented music by Jean-Claude Risset, Mario Lavista, Thea Musgrave, Marco Stroppa, Kaija Saariaho, Russell Pinkston, Warren Burt and Georg Hajdu. The structure for the research is based on the model of this experience, a journey of evolving understanding corresponding to the processes of performance: conception, preparation, presentation and reflection. This model proposes a framework for musicological investigation incorporating a comprehensive survey of repertoire and literature, considerations of technological functionality, and personal engagement with specific music, techniques and performance. The use of electronics to reveal elements of electroacoustic performance informs and positions the research, and raises questions for analysis and further explorations and understanding. The ‘site of discovery’ here is the performance; the goal is to demystify, renew, and re-evaluate the performer’s world. Building on and finding support in research from an emerging body of discourse in the wider field, the discussion and findings are primarily addressed through self-observation, based on the author’s experience as performer, as flautist. Thus these findings display significant partiality, as they aim to expand understandings of performance with electronics from within; to articulate knowledge revealed only through engagement with performance itself, and to provide a platform for the performer as writer. The focus on the self in this research approach promotes further understanding of how a performer or listener engages with the sonic, emotional, conceptual and connective capacities of the music. The project draws together historical perspectives, performance and reflective The Extended Flautist critiques, documentation of the processes of performance, the connections to technology, to others and the self. The embodiment of music through learning, rehearsal and performance is a journey that leads to the revelation of otherwise inaccessible performance knowledge. This revelation is approached here through centering the research on this very act. It is the doing, the experience, and the observation of performance with electronics that creates the responses and material of this discourse. The instrumentalist, electronics and space become an entity, a meta-instrument, incited by the microphone to construct new sounds, new expression and new identities. Renewed playing perspectives and actions, the disclosure of intuitive responses and newly evolving partnerships emerge with the knowledge of process and defined approaches. New representations of the self in sound, new awareness and perception of the performative body, connections and exchange, unveil a relocated, reshaped performing persona. The Extended Flautist traces this performative journey through a discursive musicology, an embodied scholarly encounter of narrative, analysis and performance. An enactive performance practice is revealed, a transformative musicality teeming with renewed approaches to sonority, physicality, performance space, partnerships, self-perception and expression.

Abstract (sommario):
At the end of 2016, approximately 65.6 million individuals were displaced forcibly around the world because of generalized violence, persecution, violation of human rights, or conflict such as civil war (UNHCR, 2016). The purpose of this study is to: (a) explore Syrian refugees after displacement in the US, (b) give voice to refugee fathers, and (c) advance knowledge for marriage and family therapists, who are working with refugee families. Eight Syrian refugee fathers who were displaced in the last two years and living in Indiana, US shared their experiences through in-depth interviews. After transcribing and translating the interviews, thematic analysis, a flexible research tool that provides a reach and complex account of data, was used to analyze the data. Four main themes emerged from fathers: displacement stress, loss of extended family connections, experiences of isolation, and identity changes with provider role. A thematic map also is created illustrating how the stress of displacement and being far away from extended families profoundly influence provider identities and family interactions. In addition, the contextual model of family stress is used to customize fathers experience of displacement. The inferences from this study provide guidance for marriage and family therapists, mental health practitioners, and organizations working with refugee families.

Abstract (sommario):
Introduction: The purpose of this study was to determine the perceptions of practicing respiratory therapists (RT) and respiratory care educators regarding the role of RTs serving as physician extenders. Methods: The survey instrument was an electronic questionnaire that consisted of 17 questions. Participation was voluntary and participants were selected through random and convenience sampling techniques. Results: Of 506 respondents, 234 were respiratory care educators. Overwhelmingly, the respondents held the Registered Respiratory Therapist credential (92.7%). Respondents were about equally split among three education levels: 31.7% associate degree, 31.7% bachelor’s degree, and 27.3% master’s degree. Of the respondents 62.45% had considered pursing a degree in physician assistant (PA). Respondents expressed a preference for an Advanced Practice Respiratory Therapy (APRT) program (77.9%) rather than a PA program. Nearly two-thirds of the respondents reported they felt that a master’s degree should be the minimum level of education for an APRT. Conclusions: This study suggests that practitioners and educators alike are strongly supportive of advanced practice in the profession of respiratory therapy.

Abstract (sommario):
Outdoor and experimental education as a means to supplement or complement traditional learning has existed throughout most of the twentieth century. However, there is limited published research concerning Extended Stay Outdoor Education School Programs (ESOESP) and the processes that exist within these programs that lead to a particular outcome. This is a case study approach which seeks to uncover and examine the perceptions of stakeholders within an ESOESP, in order to understand and highlight the process leading to an outcome. A grounded theory and hermeneutic/dialectic approach was used to collect and analyse the data. Interviews, surveys, observations, and participation complemented the process of data collection. The analysis of the data, employing a grounded theory approach, resulted in five categories that are essential components to the process leading to an outcome at a particular ESOESP. The five categories are: Student role; Teacher role; School climate; Interpersonal/Personal skill development; and, Learning process. Based on these five categories and their related sub-categories, a process model was developed. The relationship of the categories to the experiential learning process. The results of this study provide a starting point for further research in this area.

Abstract (sommario):
During the last two decades, political change in South Africa has resulted in significant changes to higher education (HE) admission policies. Increased admission into South African universities has meant an increase in student diversity and different levels of preparedness of the students negotiating their way through their academic studies. Academic success of students remains a focus and one way of addressing this has been the introduction of various extended programmes at South African universities. Extended programmes have various academic development initiatives embedded in the coursework. These are designed to assist the academic progress of students. However, student success remains elusive as so many factors may impact. The purpose of this study therefore, was to investigate the perceptions of the National Diploma (Engineering: Electrical) Extended Programme students with regard to the benefits of the academic development initiatives offered by the NMMU, in order to gain a deeper understanding of their experiences as Extended Programme students. An exploratory sequential research design was employed, consisting of two phases of data collection, following each other successively (Creswell, 2012). The first phase of the data collection involved both quantitative and qualitative data. This was followed by a consecutive collection of qualitative data with the aim to enhance the themes that emerged from the first phase of this study. This mixed-methods research design facilitated the gathering of rich data to answer the research questions. The results indicated that these students perceived the academic development initiatives they received as positive and beneficial to their development. In addition, they felt adequately prepared for the mainstream curriculum; acquired and applied many skills relative to their field; and considered themselves to be at an advantage when comparing themselves to their mainstream counterparts.

Abstract (sommario):
In the cornea transplant process, each graft endothelium is observed by conventional optical microscopy to check that its cell density is sufficient to maintain a proper transparency after the transplantation. The grafts are stored in a specific preservation medium, they are thus impregnated with fluid and therefore exhibit folds which make cell observation and counting difficult. This practical issue led to the following theoretical study about the so-called concepts: extended-depth-of-field and shape-from-focus. Throughout a sequence of images acquired by optical sectioning, the in-focus information allows on the one hand to recover the topography of the observed surface and on the other hand to restore the image of its texture. A 3-D reconstruction is then obtained by mapping the texture onto the topography. This thesis basically considers the fundamental step of the reconstruction process that is the focus measurement. New generic focus measurements exhibiting high sharpness sensitivity are introduced. Another one offering high noise robustness is proposed, due to an original 3-D strategy through the image sequence, unlike traditional methods that operate in 2-D. All of them are tested on simulated data and various real acquisitions, and compared to the state-of-the-art methods. Furthermore, the aforementioned 3-D focus measurement clearly improves the 3-D surface reconstructions of the corneal endotheliums from their particularly disturbed acquisitions (contrast reversals). A complete iterative process of 3-D reconstruction of the corneal endothelial surfaces is finally described, resulting in solid results that can already be transferred to cornea banks

Abstract (sommario):
Achieving an effective balance between the theoretical and practical components of pre-service teacher education has been a long debated issue. The quality of pre-service teacher practicum experiences vary, and are dependent on numerous variables, such as the duration of the practicum and the quality of the mentoring and provision of feedback. This study reports on an Internship Model, which began in 2009, and its perceived impact on the quality of graduate teachers in Western Australia. As an ‘Intern Teacher’, pre-service teachers spend their final academic year working at a selected primary school, paired with a trained mentor and receive ongoing standards-based feedback. Throughout the year they participate in weekly professional development sessions. In 2014 there are over 50 ‘Intern Graduates’ working in Western Australia who have qualified through the Internship Model and two partnering Western Australian universities. This mixed-methods study invited all principals with an Intern Graduate in their school to compare the work of Intern Graduates and non-Intern Graduates via a survey, based on the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers. The quantitative data analysis included a binomial analysis, looking at the proportion of principals who perceive their Intern Graduate to perform at a higher or significantly higher level than one they expect from traditionally educated graduate teachers. The qualitative component of the study includes analysis from interviews with four principals in order to identify key areas of significance in relation to principals’ perceptions of graduate performance. This thesis makes recommendations based on the study’s key findings, which show that principal participants believe Intern Graduates perform at a higher level than non-Intern Graduates. Recommendations may be of interest to the Department of Education, school leaders and tertiary institutions, and are particularly relevant in the current national climate of improving teacher quality and addressing the problems of graduate teacher retention.

Multi-Target tracking is a key ability for many intelligent systems in lots of applications. In order to accomplish the multi-target tracking, the measurements from the perceptive sensor plays a very important role. It is impossible to perform the multi-target tracking without sensory data especially such as occlusion situation, which increases the difficulty of the tracking task. Moreover, in the urban traffic situation, occlusion decreases the driving safety; and in the case of human joint tracking, occlusion may fails the estimates and leads to wrong judgement for evaluating the performance of rehabilitation activities. Here, two frameworks are presented and described for a stationary 2D LIDAR and for heterogeneous sensors. The first framework introduces the virtual measurement model with interacting object tracking scheme to tackle the effects of the occlusion in crowded urban environments. The second framework applies the heterogeneous sensor simultaneous localization, tracking, and modeling algorithm to fuse heterogeneous sensors and to provide estimates within occlusion for motion evaluation in stroke rehabilitation process. The ample experimental results of the first application show that the interact object tracking scheme tracks over 57% of occluded moving object for the daunting task in an urban intersection. While the results of the second application with synthetic data and collected from ten subjects reveal that the proposed approach yields 4.6 cm error in observed cases and 18.1 cm error during burst occlusion. We successfully demonstrate the capability to resolve issues and effects in occlusion for both urban and indoor environments.

Abstract (sommario):
Poor mathematics performance in South African schools is of national concern. An attempt to gain insight into the problem prompted a study into the possibility of a relationship between visual perceptual skill and mathematic ability. A theoretical review revealed that inherent limitations of traditional psychological theories hinder an adequate explanation for the possible existence of such a relationship. The theory of situated cognition seems to be better suited as an explanatory model, and simultaneously clarifies the nature of both visual perception and mathematics. A small exploratory study, with a sample of 70 Grade 6 learners, provided empirical evidence towards the plausibility of the relationship. Specifically, it proved the hypothesis that visual perceptual skill positively correlates with scholastic mathematics achievement. The results of the study, interpreted within the situated cognitive framework, suggest that a conceptual emphasis in mathematics education – as opposed to a factual emphasis – might improve mathematic ability, which may credibly reflect in scholastic performance.

Abstract (sommario):
The purpose of this case study was to explore the perceptions of school district administrators and members of the community about the influence of school-based activities had on voter behavior. The case study focused on a school district in the Willamette Valley of Oregon. Interviews were held with the school district administrators and taxpayers in the community. The surveyed taxpayers were prominent, influential and well informed about the school district and the community. Three questions were addressed to both the school administrators and taxpayers. (1.) What are the perceptions of the interviewee on the influence of school site activities on voter behavior? (2.) What activities would the interviewee perceive to be most effective in gaining/keeping community support? (3.) Does the interviewee perceive anything unusual about the community in its participation in school site activities and/or non-school activities? It was found that attracting the people to the school site can be a positive influence, provided that the schoolsite is in good order. The activities most effective in gaining/keeping community support were those activities that pulled the widest range of community members to the school site. The administrators perceived the large attendance at school activities as support for the school system rather than the family members supporting the children. Administrators were also aware of a large segment of the community without school-age children, yet no active budgeted plans to reach them had been made. Furthermore, community members felt that the district should live within their budget even though there was large community support for school based activities. The change in demographic characteristics, increased enrollment, and increased property evaluations have caused the community's perception of the school district to become more fiscally conservative. Due to the lack of trust by the taxpayers, the school district needs to be sensitive to the community by furnishing timely information about the how and why public monies are being spent.

Abstract (sommario):
This study investigates the perceptions of learners and staff of the Dental Technology Extended First Programme (EFYP) currently offered in the Department of Dental Services at the Durban University of Technology. The EFYP has been offered since 1995 in order to meet the needs of under prepared learners in the Dental Technology programme as well as to address transformation of the programme. The Dental Technology EFYP has evolved over a number of years and was one of the first extended programmes offered in South African higher education. No evaluation of this programme has occurred since its inception. Moreover, the present study is particularly relevant as it has been conducted at a time that the Department of Education is concerned with low throughput rates in South African tertiary education. It is hoped that insights into this programme gained from this study will be of benefit to educators either currently providing foundation provision or those contemplating foundation provision in the future. It is noted that little research into foundation provision has, to date, been conducted in South Africa. For this study, learners currently registered in the Dental Technology programme and staff from the programme were interviewed in semi-structured interviews, and the main themes concerning foundation provision emerging from the study were identified. I conclude that the current EFYP is an academically sound programme contributing to the academic development of individual learners as well as to the overall success of the Dental Technology programme. Learners were unanimous in their belief that the EFYP contributed positively towards their academic advancement. Furthermore, learners noted the contribution that the EFYP made to their integration into higher education through a range of interventions such the departmental mentorship programme. Staff, also, favourably viewed the EFYP as academically successful.

Abstract (sommario):
The escalating number of people infected by HIV and AIDS poses a challenge to current resources both at the hospital and household level. Community/Home based care is a viable option in response to the scourge of HIV/AIDS to compliment secondary and tertiary care as well as providing support to affected families in coping with the stress of caring for their terminally ill family members. This study explored the effectiveness of the implementation of Community/Home based care services by focusing on three sites at Bushbuckridge i.e. Cunningmore, Maviljan and Hluvukani. Findings revealed that family members were satisfied to have community caregivers entering their homes to provide care and support to their AIDS ill family members. Significant barriers were highlighted by families and community caregivers that hinder effective implementation of the programme, for instance, cultural sensitivity. The study proffered recommendations on how to deal with these issues.
