Resté en marge des troubles qui ont agité la région depuis 2011, le Liban apparaît à bien des égards comme un cas d’école. En dépit de la proximité du conflit syrien, le pays avait réussi à préserver les fragiles équilibres communautaires sur lesquels repose son modèle politico-institutionnel. Or, le mouvement de contestation populaire qui a émergé à l’automne 2019 appelle à une remise en cause fondamentale de ce système et à la définition d’un nouveau contrat social à même de représenter l’ensemble de la population libanaise. Alors que la classe dirigeante libanaise semble bien en peine de proposer des solutions à la mesure des problèmes, la terrible explosion sur le port de Beyrouth qui a endeuillé durant l’été 2020 le Liban a porté la colère des Libanais à son comble .

En dix-huit mois, le Liban a été confronté à une série d’événements dramatiques. L’aggravation de la crise économique systémique a fait passer le PIB du pays de 55 milliards de dollars en 2018 à 33 milliards en 2020. L’épidémie de Covid-19 et les terribles explosions au port de Beyrouth en août 2020 ont fait des centaines de victimes et des milliers de blessés, et ont causé des dégâts matériels, qui concernent essentiellement les logements et le patrimoine culturel, estimés à 4 milliards de dollars. De larges zones du front de mer, ainsi que des bâtiments historiques, des hôpitaux, des infrastructures, des entrepôts et le silo à grain principal, ont été sérieusement endommagés. Aujourd’hui, dans le centre-ville, les traces des dégâts causés par ces explosions côtoient d’autres ruines, qui remontent à la guerre civile de 1975-1990, et qui sont tout aussi chargées de connotations politiques et culturelles. À quelques kilomètres du port, en effet, se dresse ce qu’on appelle l’Œuf, une coquille de béton dégradée située à proximité de la place des Martyrs. Conçu en 1965 par l’architecte libanais Joseph Philippe Karam, l’Œuf fait figure de paradigme des problèmes actuels de Beyrouth, mais aussi de ses enjeux et de ses exceptionnelles possibilités. Sa situation nous renseigne sur les relations complexes entre architecture, politique et espace public. Le texte souligne la pertinence de l’Œuf en tant que caisse de résonance de questions plus larges, et décrit son appropriation en tant qu’acte politique. Le choix de l’Œuf comme lieu idéal de débat a cristallisé l’essor de modèles alternatifs de participation, et en même temps a témoigné de la capacité latente de l’architecture à fournir un cadre à l’action. L’Œuf est un amplificateur : ses intérieurs absorbent et réverbèrent l’expression de nouvelles exigences, spatiales et politiques.

This paper aims to investigate the perceived risk after the Tianjin port explosion event and its impact on property value. In addition to focusing on the relationship between homebuyers’ risk perception and property sales price, this paper also considers the risk perception of property sellers via the sale-to-list ratio. By using the difference-in-differences method and the sample from the property agent, we found that the explosion event generated a long-time effect on the public and property market in the city of Tianjin. Relative to those properties far away from the explosion site, the sales price and the sale-to-list ratio of the property near the explosion site were detected to have significant drops for the first six months after the explosion event. The temporal decrease of the relative sales price and the sale-to-list ratio are the evidence of short period overreaction from the public, which decays over time. This study demonstrates an indirect method to estimate the perceived risk of the general public and provides valuable insight into sustainable port management policies.

Cet article examine le quatrième livre illustré de Lamia Ziadé, Mon port de Beyrouth (2021) dans lequel l’auteure-dessinatrice raconte l’explosion du 4 août 2020 qui a fait 215 victimes, plus de 6,000 blessés, détruit 20 pour cent de la capitale libanaise et laissé 300,000 personnes sans domicile. Créé sous le choc de la catastrophe et dans l’urgence de témoigner, ce récit graphique raconte les premiers moments de la tragédie et les semaines qui suivent. En m’appuyant sur le modèle conceptuel d’Avril Maddrell (2016), je propose de cartographier l’expérience de la perte, du deuil et du souvenir dans trois types d’espaces: les espaces physiques, les espaces incarnés psychologiques du corps et de l’esprit et les espaces virtuels. Dans chacun de ces espaces, je montrerai comment s’entrecroisent des cartographies individuelles et collectives; l’œuvre elle-même devenant à la fois l’incarnation et la sublimation d’un travail de deuil individuel et un site de commémoration (collective) des victimes, soit un lieu de mémoire dans lequel s’ancrent le désir de justice et le refus d’oublier.

ABSTRACTAn explosion at the Port of Beirut resulted in over 200 fatalities and displaced many more. Hundreds recorded and thousands shared the event, sparking discourse across social media. We provide a mixed‐methods analysis of 26 TikTok videos about the port explosion. Our study involved a semiotic analysis of the videos and a content analysis of the related 21,150 comments. The discourse surrounding the explosion extends a growing body of literature on the role of TikTok in disseminating crisis‐related information. We use a collective sensemaking framework to investigate how TikTok contributes to the understanding of an event. The authors find that Middle Eastern content creators contributed more to collective sensemaking about the event than non‐Middle Eastern creators. We additionally examine the current state of collective sensemaking on TikTok and provide platform implications.

Abstract (sommario):
On 12 August 2015, Tianjin port, Tianjin City, China, a catastrophic explosion of Ruihai International Logistics Co., Ltd. (Tianjin, China) killed 173 and hurt almost 798 people, accompanying a financial loss of almost USD 2 billion. The ignition of the first fire due to the autocatalytic decomposition of nitrocellulose was verified by differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) isothermal tests. A crater with a diameter of 97 m was created by the second explosion. For the second catastrophic explosion, an amount of 577 tons of trinitrotoluene was determined by the average through scaling law, crater inverse analysis and blast effects on structures. The overpressure against distance for consequence analysis was conducted using Baker’s, Sadovski’s and Alonso’s methodologies. A distinctive scenario of “two-successive-sympathetic detonations-following-a-fire” was proposed and discussed. Isothermal time-to-maximum-rate was validated to be approximately 9 days for the nitrocellulose inside the containers with an internal temperature of 60 °C stored at Tianjin port. A fatality radius chosen at the overpressure of 0.6 bar was ascertained to be nearly 410 m from the explosion origin.

Contexte : Cette thèse se concentre sur les essais cliniques au Liban, un sujet peu exploré jusqu'à présent. La conduite d'essais cliniques reste indispensable pour faire progresser la recherche scientifique. Ces trois dernières années, le Liban a été confronté à une série de crises majeures, notamment la crise socio-économique, la pandémie de Covid-19 et l'explosion du port de Beyrouth en août 2020. Il est probable que les essais cliniques aient été significativement impactés par ces événements en raison de la détérioration du système de santé. Dans ce contexte, ce travail examine les enjeux éthiques entourant les essais cliniques au Liban, en mettant l'accent sur les perspectives des médecins, acteurs clés de ces essais, dans un environnement socio-économique, juridique et politique complexe. Méthode : Dans le but de compléter l'analyse exploratoire de la littérature, qui s'est avérée insuffisante pour répondre à notre question de recherche, nous avons opté pour une étude qualitative basée sur des entretiens dirigés. Cette méthode permet d'explorer la problématique en évaluant les représentations des médecins quant à la possibilité de réaliser encore des essais cliniques, en particulier face aux enjeux éthiques, dans le contexte actuel de crise. Grâce à cette approche, les motivations et les préoccupations des médecins pourront être mieux comprises. Résultats : Dans le contexte de la crise économique, politique et sanitaire au Liban, les médecins ont adopté des attitudes mitigées vis-à-vis des essais cliniques. Certains médecins restent intéressés par les essais cliniques ; ils les voient comme une opportunité d'accéder à des traitements innovants pour leurs patients et de contribuer à l'avancement de la recherche médicale malgré les défis auxquels ils sont confrontés. D'autres, cependant, sont préoccupés par les difficultés liées à la conduite des essais cliniques dans un environnement instable, avec des ressources limitées et une pénurie de médicaments et de matériel. En outre, la charge de travail accrue et le stress émotionnel liés à l'insécurité financière, la pandémie de Covid-19 et l'explosion du port de Beyrouth semblent contribuer à un manque de motivation chez les médecins. De plus, l'émigration de médecins qualifiés a rendu difficile la conduite des essais. Selon plusieurs médecins de l'étude, la corruption et l'instabilité politico-économique, ont également conduit à des préoccupations émergentes et une méfiance quant aux conditions de sécurité et d'éthique dans lesquelles les essais sont menés. Discussion : Au Liban, malgré les différentes crises qui ont secoué le pays ces trois dernières années, les essais cliniques sont encore possibles. Cependant, en état de crise, les essais cliniques présentent de nouveaux enjeux éthiques tels que la pertinence des sujets de recherche, la sécurité des participants à l'étude, la qualité de leur information et de leur consentement libre et éclairé, ainsi que l'équité dans leur recrutement. La pression économique sur les établissements de recherche et les chercheurs peut aboutir à une négligence des aspects éthiques de la recherche, telle qu'une supervision inadéquate. La priorisation des essais cliniques dans le contexte de la crise sanitaire peut également entraîner des conflits d'intérêts entre la nécessité de répondre aux besoins urgents de la population et l'évaluation rigoureuse des risques et des avantages de ces essais. Les enjeux éthiques de la recherche clinique au Liban en état de crise nécessitent donc une attention particulière et une application appropriée de la régulation pour assurer la sécurité et le respect des droits des participants. Il convient de noter que les priorités changent en période de crise, et que les besoins en termes d'accès aux soins de base peuvent être plus urgents que les besoins en recherche clinique. Dans ces circonstances, il peut être difficile de trouver un équilibre entre les priorités concurrentes
Context: This thesis focuses on clinical trials in Lebanon, a topic that has been little explored until now. Conducting clinical trials remains essential for advancing scientific research. Over the past three years, Lebanon has faced a series of major crises, including the socio-economic crisis, the Covid-19 pandemic, and the explosion at the port of Beirut in August 2020. It is likely that clinical trials have been significantly impacted by these events due to the deterioration of the healthcare system. In this context, this work examines the ethical issues surrounding clinical trials in Lebanon, with a focus on the perspectives of physicians, key actors in these trials, in a complex socio-economic, legal, and political environment. Method: In order to supplement the exploratory analysis of the literature, which proved insufficient to answer our research question, we opted for a qualitative study based on directed interviews. This method allows us to explore the problem by evaluating the representations of physicians regarding the possibility of still conducting clinical trials, particularly in the face of ethical issues, in the current crisis context. Through this approach, the motivations and concerns of physicians can be better understood. Results: In the context of the economic, political, and health crisis in Lebanon, physicians have adopted mixed attitudes towards clinical trials. Some physicians remain interested in clinical trials; they see them as an opportunity to access innovative treatments for their patients and to contribute to the advancement of medical research despite the challenges they face. Others, however, are concerned about the difficulties associated with conducting clinical trials in an unstable environment, with limited resources and a shortage of drugs and medical equipment. In addition, the increased workload and emotional stress associated with financial insecurity, the Covid-19 pandemic, and the explosion at the port of Beirut appear to contribute to a lack of motivation among physicians. Moreover, the emigration of qualified physicians has made it difficult to conduct trials. According to several physicians in the study, corruption and political-economic instability have also led to emerging concerns and mistrust regarding the safety and ethical conditions under which trials are conducted. Discussion: In Lebanon, despite the various crises that have shaken the country over the past three years, clinical trials are still possible. However, in a state of crisis, clinical trials present new ethical issues such as the relevance of research subjects, the safety of study participants, the quality of their information and free and informed consent, as well as equity in their recruitment. Economic pressure on research institutions and researchers can result in neglect of ethical aspects of research, such as inadequate supervision and poor personnel training. The prioritization of clinical trials in the context of the health crisis can also lead to conflicts of interest between the need to respond to the urgent needs of the population and the rigorous evaluation of the risks and benefits of these trials. The ethical issues of clinical research in Lebanon in a state of crisis therefore require special attention and appropriate regulatory enforcement to ensure the safety and respect for the rights of participants. It should be noted that priorities change in times of crisis, and that the need for access to basic healthcare may be more urgent than the need for clinical research. In these circumstances, it can be difficult to find a balance between competing priorities

Cette étude offre une synthèse sur la ville de Bérytos à l'époque hellénistique tout en abordant les périodes de l'histoire perse et augustéenne de la ville. Elle s'appuie sur plusieurs corpus : la céramique en provenance de Bey-144, un corpus de monnaie du même site, une sélection de textes antiques et les inscriptions relatives aux Bérytiens. A cela s'ajoute une synthèse sur l'urbanisme de la ville réalisée à partir des rapports publiés de la grande fouille du centre-ville. Ces données ont permis d' analyser l'histoire de Bérytos, et de comprendre son rôle et sa place à une échelle régionale mais aussi internationale. L'étendue du corpus étudié nous a permis de saisir et d'analyser le rôle des Bérytiens dans les stratégies méditerranéennes, et les répercussions de leurs activités sur la cité-métropole.

La problématique porte sur la façon dont les ports en général et le Terminal à conteneurs du Port de Beyrouth au Liban, en particulier, pourraient améliorer leur gestion et optimiser le fonctionnement de leurs opérations au quotidien. Nous avons également introduit la théorie de la structuration de Giddens qui est une théorie du social et des rapports sociaux, pour voir dans quelle mesure certains de ses principes pourraient être bénéfiques à notre étude.Le thème de la gestion d’un terminal à conteneurs et les failles qui résident dans sa gestion et qui nuisent à ses performances est un sujet qui n’a pas été traité en profondeur auparavant. Notre immersion dans cet environnement, à savoir le Terminal à conteneurs du Port de Beyrouth durant un an nous a permis de comprendre la véritable nature de ces problèmes ainsi que leurs sources.Notre présence sur le terrain nous a donné l'occasion de conduire une série d’entretiens avec les chefs de département afin de comprendre les lacunes et les obstacles auxquels ils font face et être en mesure de proposer des solutions adaptées à leurs problèmes par le biais de cette thèse.Nos entretiens avec les chefs de département ont eu pour but de recueillir pour chaque département une description du fonctionnement quotidien des opérations, les principaux problèmes et défis les plus récurrents auxquels ils font face afin de trouver les manières de les contrer.Cette thèse a pour but de dresser une liste de recommandations par département afin d’améliorer leur performance dans le futur et d’augmenter ainsi la performance globale du Terminal à conteneurs du Port de Beyrouth
The problematic covers the way ports in general and the container terminal of the port of Beirut in Lebanon, in particular, manage and optimize the flow of their daily operations.We also included the theory of structuration of Giddens which is a social theory and a theory of social relations, to see how some of its principles could be valuable to our study.The subject of the management of a container terminal and the flaws that reside in its management and that affect its performance is an issue that has not been discussed in depth before. Our deep dive in the container terminal of Beirut port for a year has allowed us to understand the true nature of its problems and their sources.Our presence on the ground gave us the opportunity to conduct a series of meetings with heads of departments in order to understand the gaps and obstacles they face and be able to suggest solutions to their problems through this thesis.Our interviews with heads of departments were aimed at gathering for each department a description of the daily running of operations, the most recurrent problems and challenges they face and come up with possible ways to counter them.This thesis aimed to develop a list of recommendations by department in order to improve each department’s performance in the future and thereby increase the overall performance of the Beirut container terminal

Cette thèse de géomorphologie présente les résultats de 5000 ans d'anthropisation de l'environnement littoral à Beyrouth, Sidon et Tyr (Liban). Ces trois sites archéologiques furent fondés dans un environnement de plages de poche facilement défendables et accessibles durant l'Age du Bronze. Vers la fin de l'Age du Bronze et le début de l'Age du Fer, des échanges commerciaux en expansion, alliés à des améliorations dans la construction navale, entraînèrent une modification artificielle des mouillages naturels. Bien que les curages romains et byzantins aient créé le paradoxe de port phénicien sans archive sédimentaire, quelques dépôts de décantation à Sidon et à Tyr témoignent encore aujourd'hui d'infrastructures portuaires sophistiquées dès l'Age du Fer. Nous avons reconstitué des changements significatifs dans la topographie spatiale des trois ports pendant la période romaine. En effet, de nombreuses inversions chronologiques ainsi que des hiatus sédimentaires, sont la conséquence de dragages importants. Les bassins romains de Beyrouth, Sidon et Tyr sont caractérisés par des sables fins limoneux et une faune marine lagunaire. La période byzantine correspond à l'apogée des trois ports, comprenant des vases plastiques avec des faunes lagunaire et marine. Le déclin relatif des trois sites est daté du VIe au VIIIe siècles après J.-C. Nous attribuons ce phénomène à trois dynamiques complémentaires : (1) historique, notamment une rétraction de l'empire byzantin sur son noyau anatolien ; (2) des changements rapides du niveau de la mer d'origine néotectonique ; et (3) la destruction partielle des bassins par des tsunami.

A Tyr, nous avons élaboré un modèle géomorphologique d'accrétion du tombolo. Les archives sédimentaires littorales attestent de forçages d'origine naturelle et anthropique. (1) En amont du brise-lames naturel constitué de l'ancienne île de Tyr, la Surface d' Inondation Maximale est datée vers 7500 ans BP. Des faciès limoneux et une faune marine traduisent un milieu sédimentaire de basse énergie. Cette zone a été abritée de la houle du sud-ouest par un récif gréseux d'environ 6 km de long. (2) Après 6000 ans BP, la stabilisation du niveau de la mer, couplée à des flux sédimentaires importants, a engendré l'accrétion de fonds sableux. Cette dynamique a abouti à la formation d'un proto-tombolo, 1 à 2 m sous le niveau de la mer à l'époque d'Alexandre le Grand (IVe siècle av. J.-C.). (3) Après 332 av. J.-C., la construction de la chaussée hellénistique a entraîné une segmentation irréversible du littoral Tyrien.

As disasters are occurring more frequently, numerous countries have increasingly emphasized the importance of post-disaster recovery. In recent years, the Chinese economy has been rapidly developing. Accordingly, rapid industrial development has resulted in numerous disasters. Particularly, the Tianjin Port explosions on August 12, 2015 are well-known internationally. Because of totalitarian politics in Mainland China, few studies from Taiwan have discussed China’s efforts and accomplishments regarding post-disaster recovery. The 2008 Sichuan earthquake has often been used as an example in studies to discuss the “star disaster area” phenomenon in Mainland China and to reveal how post-disaster recovery in Mainland China is influenced by internal politics and whether the government considers the post-disaster recovery crucial. These two factors affect the amount of resources used for post-disaster recovery in a certain area and the effectiveness of the post-disaster recovery. This study has three parts: (1) We conducted in-depth interviews with local or related researchers, personnel from academic institutions, and government department workers to provide a solid foundation for this discourse and clarify the causes of an event; (2) On the basis of the experiences of interviewees and the interview results, we visited Tianjin and Tianjin Economic and Technological Development Area (TEDA)to conduct a field investigation; (3) Relevant statistical data (e.g., gross domestic product for the local areas and changes in house prices) were provided to support the aforementioned investigation results and consolidate the discussions presented in this study. Finally, we summarized the changing context of industrial spaces in Tianjin and the window of opportunity brought by individual cases and highlighted the problems and contradictions regarding current industrial structures and planning in Tianjin. This was done to encourage the local government of Tianjin to propose a plan for the future development of industrial spaces by highlighting individual cases. Moreover, the effectiveness of post-disaster recovery in China, which is strongly influenced by politics, is found to be able to efficiently facilitate the purchase and reconstruction of post-disaster houses, which in turns helps the recovery of house prices in disaster areas.

Binhai New Area in Tianjin in mainland of China rose in 1980s, it was located in the eastern coastal area of Tianjin and the Economic Zone of Bohai Rim. Because of its vast hinterland of port and rapidly industrial development, it is the gateway of the northern part of mainland China. However, With the rapid development of industrialization, it is easy to cause environmental hazards. The explosion of Tianjin Port in 2015 was the best case. Most of the literature on disaster of recovery and reconstruction in mainland China is based on natural disasters. For example, Tangshan earthquake in 1976, Wenchuan earthquake in 2008, Yushu earthquake in 2010. Therefore, this study would like to explore the structure of the emergency system in mainland China through Tianjin Port explosion, other fire or explosion-related cases, and whether mitigation plan will affect Nangang Industrial Zone. First of all, (1)We provide a solid foundation for the discourse and clarify the causes of an event by in-depth interviews with local government agencies, academic institutions, experts and scholars; (2)On the basis of the experiences of interviewees and the interview results, we visited Tianjin, Beijing, and Tianjin Economic and Technological Development Area; (3)Using the interview data to find out the relevant government agencies who responsible for the explosion accident and the relevant land planning after the explosion, we would like to support the aforementioned investigation results and consolidate the discussions presented in this study.Finally, we summarized that the post-disaster reconstruction mechanism of Tianjin Port, the contradiction of the administrative system after the explosion, the changing context of industrial space, and the rise of Ministry of Emergency Management in mainland of China, and so on.

AbstractThis chapter traces the experience of political activists in Lebanon from protests, social movement formation, revolution, to the current moment of their choosing to migrate. It conceptualizes the Mediterranean as a socially symbolic space where many Lebanese activists are choosing to settle in after a series of crises and disappointments. It helps us understand how movements get disrupted and how activists used agency in certain moments to purposefully disconnect from what they perceive to be situations where there is no hope left. The chapter uses in-depth interviews with individuals who have recently migrated following Lebanon’s economic collapse and the port explosion.

During a multi-level crisis—economic, health and security—post-explosion of the Port of Beirut, Lebanese entrepreneurs are opting for changes that allow them to survive. The authors studied the experiences of 14 entrepreneurs during crises and carried out a qualitative analysis which made it possible to identify the different variables, highlighting the application of the war strategies as written by Robert Greene. The most marked variables are the date of creation of the entrepreneurial activity, the sector (nature of the activity), the availability of financial resources, the level of change, the subjective well-being, the work-life balance, and the entrepreneur's optimism regarding the development of the business in the future. These variables were reviewed through Robert Greene's strategies of war: the controlled chaos strategy, mind flexibility (management like water), the power of fire, the counterbalance strategy, fighting the present war, and the detached buddha tactic.

In order to fundamentally solve the hidden danger of dust explosion in grain silos, a new fully hydraulic intelligent screw clearing machine for grain silos was studied. The rotation of the spiral shaft and the movement of the whole machine were controlled by the hydraulic system, which realized that there was no electrical component in the internal actuator and the safety was higher. This paper introduces the structure and composition of the fully hydraulic intelligent screw clearing machine for grain silos and studies its key technologies. Based on the above achievements, the first domestic fully hydraulic intelligent screw clearing machine for grain silos is developed and applied to the grain silos of Xiamen Port Hailong Wharf. The application further compares and analyzes the main performance parameters of the fully hydraulic intelligent screw clearing machine and the electric screw clearing machine for grain silos. The research shows that the fully hydraulic intelligent screw clearing machine for grain silos can effectively reduce the operation of personnel entering the warehouse and realize safer, intelligent and efficient clearing operations.

Abstract. Ammonium nitrate(V) (AN, NH4NO3) is widely and widely used in the chemical industry, in agriculture as a fertilizer, explosive for military and civil purposes (e.g. in mining) or as a solid propellant [1, 2]. Storage of ammonium nitrate poses many problems, as it may be hazardous. This was proven, for example, by the explosion in 2020 in Beirut. Ammonium nitrate was stored in a warehouse at the port among other wares and an unfortunate turn of events caused a huge explosion. The explosion contributed to the formation of a 140-meter crater and an earthquake with a magnitude of 3.3 on the Richter scale. This explosion was classified as the third most destructive urban explosion of all time, after the atomic bombs in Hiroshima and Nagasaki at the end of World War II [3, 4], as the mixtures of oils (fuel or gas) and a concentrated form of nitrogen fertilizer  ammonium nitrate form explosives [5]. The dangerous properties of AN have been extensively studied. It is known that pure AN is stable at room temperature but may explode when mixed with impurities in a confined space or under fire-hazard conditions [1]. The research aimed to analyze the changes occurring in two-component mixtures with ammonium nitrate and powdered or fine-grained materials and to assess the effect of such an admixture on the fertilizer. Thermal analysis was used to carry out the TG-DSC tests.

Explosions of combustible industrial gases and gas suspensions are one of the main causes of technological disasters. An example of the catastrophe is the explosion in the city of Kaohsiung, Taiwan, related with propylene leak in 2014. The explosion occurred during the transportation of propylene from the port to a chemical plant through a pipeline laid in underground utilities. One of the ways to prevent the catastrophic consequences of such incidents is to use inert components, for example, solid inert particles, porous ¦lters, or inert gas plugs to suppress detonation. In the present study, physical and mathematical modeling of the interaction of two-dimensional cellular detonation wave in hydrogen air mixture with inert porous ¦lters is performed. The model is based on the system of Euler equations describing the interaction of gas and ¦lters including the laws of mass, momentum, and energy conservation for each of the phases and components closed by equations of state, momentum exchange (drag forces), and heat transfer between gas and porous ¦lter. Hydrogen combustion is described by a reduced chemical kinetics. It was assumed that the porous ¦lter is a continuous medium in the form of a grid of stationary cylinders.

This research is a continuation of the previous research on the simulation of Low Density Polyethylene reactors. The main focus of this research is the stability of the simulation and the optimization of the polymerization to decrease decomposition. Polymerization is a very complex reaction with multiple stages. There are three main stages this research is concentrated about: Polyethylene production, Ethylene decomposition, and Initiator (Acetylene) decomposition. If decomposition occurs, there is a chance of explosion due to the decomposition reaction being exothermic and violent. ANSYS Fluent is a computational fluid dynamics, CFD, software capable of simulating these reactions. The tubular reactor consists of a pipe and an injection port. There are many variables in this reaction that can be manipulated to produce a result such as injection speed and mass fractions of chemical components. The stability of the simulation was insured using a new method, “Jumpstart”, which involves initially injecting an infinitesimally small amount of the decomposition products, in order to successfully trigger decomposition.

Chinese Fusion Engineering Testing Reactor (CFETR) is a tokamak-type machine and next device in the roadmap for the realization of fusion energy in China, which aims to bridge the gaps between the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) and the demonstration reactor (DEMO) [1]. The accident sequence starting from loss of vacuum accident (LOVA) is an important issue concerning the performance of CFETR. During LOVA, air will leak into the vacuum vessel (VV) causing fast pressurization of VV. At the same time, the high speed airflow jet will result in migration and re-suspension of the large quantity of tungsten dust produced and deposited in the lower part of plasma chamber, causing possibilities of radioactive dust leakage into the workshop and environment. In order to conduct a comprehensive analysis of the accident sequence, firstly, the airflow characteristics of LOVA should be studied. In this article, a postulated rupture of different section area is assumed due to a failed component at the equatorial port level. The computational fluid dynamic (CFD) modelling of LOVA was conducted by ANSYS CFX. The results show that the break area has significant influences on the characteristics of the airflow. Two swirling airflows are formed in the upper and lower part of the torus. The airflow characteristics are quite different when the LOVA happens during maintenance or during normal operation. A reverse flow occurs when the LOVA happens during normal operation. Yet can not be observed when LOVA occurs during maintenance. The results are the basis to the further safety study of CFETR such as the re-suspension, migration and explosion of dust.

In the last decade the hybrid propulsion has been considering as a viable alternative of chemical energy conversion stored in propellants into kinetic energy. This energy is applied in propulsive systems of manned platforms, maneuvering procedures and even in the repositioning process of micro satellites. It is a system of minimum environmental impact and lower cost than traditional systems based on liquid or solid propellants. Paraffin based grains are the hybrid solid fuels appointed as polymeric fuel substitute. The liquid layer formed on the burning surface ensures high regression rate when driven into the flame front. Paraffin grains allow row material recovery and reduce the risk of explosion in the presence of erosive burning. The structure of the grain and the control of the liquefying burning surface layer depend on the additives concentration, such as carbon black, which are added to the fuel matrix during the production process. In the solid propellant paraffin based grain a cylindrical center port developed during the centrifugation tends to concentrate carbon black in the outer region of the grain. During solidification 15% of shrinkage occurs and appears hardness gradient in the longitudinal and transverse directions. The influence of carbon black distribution and hardness gradient in paraffin based grain were evaluated in this work. The study suggests that multiple thin layers grain may generate burning surfaces with hardness and carbon black concentration almost constant. The ballistic properties and propulsion efficiency of a hybrid lab rocket scale with 150 N of thrust were evaluated in the pressure of 2.8 MPa with 140 Kg/(sm2) gaseous oxygen (GOX) mass flux, the results show up the nozzle operation and motor-propellant relationships.
