Abstract (sommario):
A metamorphosis of Europe is undoubtedly taking place. In fact, Europe is at the same time the object and subject of transformative movements that will shake its foundations. Within the current European metamorphosis, what is the challenge to be accepted or launched by psychology? This challenge corresponds to a series of anthropological-cultural contradictions present in the system: Is European psychology functional to the scientific-technological apparatus or to the human beings involved and the interrelations thereof? Will the values of psychology strive toward achieving human well-being? Is and will the contribution of psychology to the constitution of a new Europe be of an objectivist or of a subjectivist nature? Will the contribution of psychology be characterized by an individualistic approach or by a group-centered one? One “fundamental” of Europe does exist, which centers around three institutional foundations of the European cultural strata that have bccome interconnected in time and space: Greek thought, the Renaissance mind, and the three Christian religions (Catholic, Orthodox, Protestant). The contribution of psychology could be focused mainly on taking care of needs (maternal code) or on supporting development (paternal code). Psychology should choose between a positivistic or a holistic approach or, still better, integrate both of them. Psychology should stress its attention to its manifold roots and not only be subdued to the Anglo-Saxon culture. A complementary and nonconflictual approach will be the best strategy. Where and how do psychologists stand today in the important distinction between the “academic culture” and the “militant culture,” which means pure and applied research? Are they scientists or technicians? Are they explorers of knowledge or of applications? Are they intellectuals or executives? Scholars or professionals? Dedicated to pure or to empiric research? Episteme or Doxa priests? And can the challenge of the European metamorphosis be productively inserted into the solution of the predicaments? The European psychological culture should answer the challenge of metamorphosis of the continent by trying to find an enlightened solution to the above-mentioned contradictions.

This article recounts the experiences of an all-male group of 59 winterers (explorers) who spent almost a year in Antarctica. As well as a group experience, it was also a deep personal experience. For the author; this stay in another world seeming far beyond that of humans was and remains a quasi-spiritual experience, of immersing oneself in the original, untouched splendour of nature, producing a kind of oceanic feeling at the most archaic level of the coself.

Abstract (sommario):
This study contributes our entire research project on museum user experience (UX), and the purpose of the paper is to provide knowledge in practice for choosing Gamification-motivated personas. As the player’s motivation fundamentally drives the outcomes, the Bartle Test of Gamer Psychology reigning from types of players was employed as a persona tool for identifying personas representing distinct intrinsic motivations. Specifically, adhering to the philosophy of user-centric intrinsic motivation, Bartle drew on an extensive range of sources to identify four types of players: achievers, socializers, explorers, and killers (we re-name killers as attackers). By analyzing the gamer psychology, it can be connected the player types to the intrinsic needs in the Self-Determination Theory (SDT). From a methodological point of view, the combination approach of quantitative and qualitative methods with constantly narrowing the scope of candidate can benefit trustworthiness. As a practical study, this paper not only analyzes the principles, but also provides a detailed persona selection procedure.

Abstract (sommario):
The discipline of political science deliberately abandoned history sixty years ago. In a quest for a true “science” of politics, it turned to physics and especially psychology for models of what a science ought to be like (Jensen, 1969). Rigor in defining and measuring variables and in the statement of theories and testing of hypotheses was sought, plus a method that could predict, and thus control, the future. History seemed unnecessary, for the terrible cataclysm of the Great War seemed to have erased or smothered the impact of the past. It would take political scientists a half century to rediscover history, and the goal of this paper is to examine the route of one of their most important explorers of the past, Walter Dean Burnham.

Hsu, Anne Y.-J. "The lived experience of transcultural identity explorers| a descriptive phenomenological psychological study on making a life in a new land". Thesis, Saybrook University, 2018. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=10928675.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):

Transcultural migration is a growing phenomenon, yet research on the lived experience of individuals who willfully leave the security and comfort of their home nation and socio-cultural support to migrate alone as adults to a foreign nation where they do not have citizenship, do not look like the locals, and do not share the local mother tongue had not been previously researched. Marcia’s (2002) work on identity exploration and May’s existential psychological works (e.g., 1953), particularly his notion of “the stages in consciousness of self” (p. 100), served as major theoretical foundations of this research. Giorgi’s (2009a) descriptive phenomenological psychological method was used, as it aligns with the qualitative and existential nature of this topic. I interviewed three transcultural migrants and analyzed the data sets with imaginative variations to yield an essential psychological structure that describes the phenomenon. Fourteen constituents were identified: the presence of a call to adventure, an urge to defy the sense of confinement or frustration, an appetite to develop one’s potential for action in the world, indefinite and flexible migration plans, an imagined or desired horizon as the destination, commitment depending on the passion for and pursuit of growth and challenges, identity reflections on being different, a sense of extra effort or work, constant revival of earlier psycho-social crises, questioning traditional cultural boundaries, integrating cultural experiences into cultural identity and orientation, rebellion against cultural judgment-based interactions, cultural flexibility through experiential understanding, and heightened awareness of global, local, and identity politics. These findings support the existing literature emphasizing migrants’ openness to experience and interest in developing personal potential (Madison, 2009), their sense of extra effort (Moreau et al., 2009), and a pluralistic sense of political and socio-cultural identity (e.g., Ortega, 2016). In addition, the present findings challenge preconceived notions of culture, suggesting that concepts of cultural orientation, rather than racial/ethnic identity, and cultural humility in place of cultural competency have greater functional applications to the transcultural phenomenon. Some clinical, educational, socio-cultural, and political implications are presented. Future studies are encouraged to examine various transcultural possibilities.

Stiff, Charlotte. "A discourse analytical study that explores the discursive constructions of therapeutic practice within educational psychology". Thesis, University of Sheffield, 2013. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/4449/.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
This Discourse Analytical (DA) study explores the discursive constructions of therapeutic practice within educational psychology. These constructions are taken from the perspective of fifteen Educational Psychologists (EPs) who are new to the profession. Drawing on data from four focus groups, comprising of three to four participants, I used Discursive Psychology (DP) to analyse the psychological themes emerging from participant talk. My analysis indicated that five interpretative repertoires were used to talk about therapeutic EP work. These included: ‘therapeutic-asskilled’,‘therapeutic-as-eclectic’, ‘therapeutic-as-threatening’,‘therapeutic-as-limited’ and ‘therapeutic-as-emerging’. A number of discursive devices such as disclaiming, excusing and blaming were also used. Participants were able to take up varying subject positions in relation to therapeutic practice, presenting themselves as both passive and active agents. When talking about therapeutic work participants positioned themselves as confused, reluctant and unconfident; as well as valuable, skilled and motivated practitioners. I concluded that the relational aspects of therapeutic EP practice are as important as the technical aids or tools used to facilitate this type of work. I have suggested that the uncertainty that exists around therapeutic work might reflect the uncertainty of participants’ emerging EP identity. My research indicates that EPs, who are new to profession, have the sufficient agency to negotiate therapeutic practices with educational psychology. However, this will require further investment from leaders within the profession.

Murphy, Mark. "Using personal construct psychology to explore relationships for adolescents with high functioning autism spectrum disorder". Thesis, Canterbury Christ Church University, 2014. http://create.canterbury.ac.uk/12861/.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Individuals with high functioning Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) stand an increased risk of experiencing mental health problems during adolescence. The present study aimed to develop a better understanding of interpersonal relationships in the lives of adolescents with high functioning ASD. Eight adolescents with a diagnosis of Asperger’s syndrome or ASD without an identified intellectual disability engaged in a structured interview based on a personal construct psychology exercise exploring constructs about interpersonal relationships. Interviews were transcribed and subjected to a thematic analysis. Four themes were identified: 1) Relationships as a source of support, 2) Perceptions of similarity and difference, 3) Valued qualities in self and others and 4) The development of and maintenance of relationships. Whilst this exploratory study highlighted some commonality in terms of perceptions of family support and friendships as protective and desirable, the participant group differed in their ability to establish and maintain peer relationships. However, peers were seen by participants as being very important in the development of social skills - a finding which has implications for the delivery of social skills training and other supportive interventions. The personal construct exercise provided an accessible and useful platform for the exploration of the social worlds of adolescents with ASD.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
The purpose of this study was to explore the relationship between undergraduate students' mental health and their engagement in the educational experience. The researcher identified traditionally-aged college students (18-23) who were flourishing and distinguished them from students who were moderately mentally healthy and/or languishing according to Keyes' (2002) continuum of mental health model. Mental health was the dependent variable. Student involvement was defined as the extent to which students engage in empirically derived good educational practices as measured by the National Survey of Student Engagement's College Student Report (2005). The five benchmark measures of student engagement were independent variables: (a) level of academic challenge, (b) student/faculty interactions, (c) active/collaborative learning, (d) enriching educational experiences, and (e) supportive campus environment. Analyses also considered students' academic achievement (GPA), gender, and parents' highest level of education (SES) as variables.;Chi square analyses showed that mental health category was independent of gender and parents' highest level of education. ANOVA results also showed that student GPA also did not differ significantly by mental health category. However ANOVA results showed that mean scores for all five engagement variables did differ significantly by mental health category (p < .001) with flourishing students scoring highest and languishing students scoring lowest. A series of stepwise multiple regressions were conducted using mental health score as a continuous variable based on confirmatory factor analysis of Keyes' model. Results showed that "supportive campus environment" was the engagement variable most significantly predictive of mental health for both males and females.

Jarvstad, Andreas. "The optimality of perception and cognition : the perception-cognition gap explored". Thesis, Cardiff University, 2012. http://orca.cf.ac.uk/24208/.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
The ability to choose wisely is crucial for our survival. Yet, the received wisdom has been that humans choose irrationally and sub-optimally. This conclusion is largely based on studies in which participants are asked to make choices on the basis of explicit numerical information. Lately, our ability to make such high-level choices has been contrasted with our ability to make low-level (perceptual or perceptuo-motor) choices. Remarkably, we seem able to make near-optimal low-level choices. Taken at face value, the discrepancy gives rise to a perception-cognition gap. The gap implies, for example, that our ancestors were much better at choosing where to put their feet on a rocky ridge (a perceptuo-motor task), compared to choosing which prey to hunt (a cognitive task). The work reported herein probes this gap. There are many differences between literatures showing optimal and sub-optimal performance. The main approach taken here was to match low- and high-level tasks as closely as possible to eliminate such differences. When this is done one finds very little evidence for a perception-cognition gap. Moreover, once the standards of performance assessment of the respective literature are applied to data generated under such conditions it becomes apparent that the cause of the gap seems to lie in the standards themselves. When low-level standards are applied, human choice, whether low- or high-level, looks good. When high-level standards are applied, human choice, whether low- or high-level, looks rather poor. It is easy to see then, that applying high-level standards to high-level tasks, and low-level standards to low-level tasks, will give rise to a “gap”, with no or little actual difference in performance.

Ratcliff, Constance B. "Utilizing Parent Report to Explore Mediating Variables of Child Trauma Symptomology following Trauma Exposure". Thesis, Northcentral University, 2019. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=13806845.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):

Acute and/or complex trauma exposure during the vulnerable, critical developmental period of childhood places children at greater risks for developing emotional, psychological, behavioral difficulties. Currently, 60 % of children experience between one to four traumatic events and 25% of these children develop trauma symptoms consistent within full or partial PTSD diagnostic criteria. The greater the number of multiple and/or chronic traumatic experiences, especially within the caregiver system, the greater the risks for significant impairment, trauma symptoms and developmental difficulties. Utilizing Attachment Theory and Trauma Theory, this quantitative study explored the relationship between parent self-reported, child trauma (PTSD) symptoms, child trauma exposure, parental trauma exposure in childhood, parent burnout, parental attachment to their child, parent spirituality and parent PTSD trauma symptoms. Secondary, archival data was collected from a convenience sample including thirty-three parents/caregivers from a clinic population in the southeastern United States. The exploratory, quantitative research study focused on identifying potential systemic risks and resiliency factors that may serve to mediate child trauma (PTSD) symptoms. The results indicated potential risks factors of child trauma (PTSD) symptoms included both the number and specific types of parental adverse childhood experiences. In addition, the number of child trauma experiences predicted child trauma (PTSD) symptomology, while high parental attachment, low parent burnout and high spirituality served as potential systemic resiliency factors. Parent trauma (PTSD) symptoms and parent spirituality were not found to predict child trauma (PTSD) symptomology following child trauma exposure. This exploratory research study does not imply causality but highlights additional systemic, family assessment avenues for further research for decreasing the negative impact of child trauma (PTSD) exposure.

Abstract (sommario):
AbstractThis chapter focuses on liberalism and neoliberalism as both constituents and consequences of the emergence of the psy disciplines through specific processes of modernity in the West. It explores the unified Cartesian subject on which psychology initially depended. It addresses American and South African versions of liberalism and their relationship to race. It also addresses the notion of universal humanity and its relation to the idea of complicity, and begins to apply the idea to intersubjective psychology. The chapter also summarizes the place of Freud’s Oedipus complex in this matrix of ideas and history, and the idea of the Western subject that has emerged accordingly, through and for psychology.

Abstract (sommario):
The paper interprets and explores two main constructs: “self-esteem” and “motivation for affiliation”. They are placed in the field of psychology of youth, the subjects are students of humanities. The study was conducted at Southwestern University “Neofit Rilski”, Blagoevgrad, Bulgaria. The aim of the study is to reveal the relationship between self-esteem and motivation for affiliation, as they are compared in students majoring in psychology with students majoring in pedagogy and speech therapy. Self-esteem is the core of personality, experiences and behavior. It is important for interactions in young people. The need to belong to the group (affiliation) is a prerequisite for self-knowledge and satisfies a number of basic needs. Using a standardized self-assessment test and Albert Mehrabian’s affiliation test, we track how the level of self-assessment determines affiliation needs. These: 1. Students with average and above average level of self-esteem have a higher motivation for affiliation, compared to students with low and very high level of self-esteem. 2. We assume that there will be statistically significant differences in the manifestations of the two constructs in students from the specialty of Psychology and other students from the humanities. We expect that psychology students will have average and above average levels of self-esteem, which will affect their motivation for affiliation, compared to students from the other group. The results of the research provide information about the personal development of students in the humanities, which could be used by university professors in order to optimize the learning process and create conditions for full inclusion of students in university life.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract Design fixation has been extensively studied in the context of engineering design, leading to several interventions to reduce its negative effects. The concept of mental fixation has roots in diverse psychological contexts from Freudian psychoanalysis to Gestaltism and eating disorders. Although the underlying concepts are similar, the phenomenon has different names, including mental set, rumination, functional fixedness, obsession, etc. Mental fixation in its various forms is always a barrier to problem solving, whether the problem is a psychological disorder or an engineering-design task. The present paper explores the applicability to design fixation of cognitive therapy, a form of psychotherapy that relies on questioning to identify and modify inaccurate perceptions. Originally developed to treat depression, it is now used to treat a variety of psychiatric disorders. Specific interventions used in cognitive therapy are described in detail towards developing new means of overcoming design fixation. These interventions include cognitive restructuring and exposure response prevention. Also explored are links to other research results from psychology and cognitive science, including focused distraction, and the effects of music and physical exercise. In addition to developing new interventions, existing design-fixation interventions can also be supplemented using insights from these research results.

Abstract (sommario):
Teachers’ Professional Development ‘TPD’ has always been an area of growing interest in educational research. Several researchers have thoroughly explored the TPD domain aiming to develop and train teachers on how to understand, experience, practice and have a sustainable impact on learners. FIRST (Bahgat et al. 2018) is a new learner experience framework, which consists of five domains; focusing on learner ‘ F’, interacting within group dynamics ‘ I’, reviewing actively ‘R’, structuring and sequencing ‘S’, and transforming learning into performance ‘T’. It is designed based on educational psychology, neuroscience, and cognitive psychology, to create a framework that promotes active deep learning and inspires a positive transformation in mindset and behaviours. FIRST was applied on a TPD program named Roadmap of Outstanding Educators ‘ROOTS’. The participants were one hundred and seven teachers. This paper attempts to explore the impact of FIRST Framework on TPD, teachers experience as learners and teachers motivation to transfer their learning into performance in the classrooms. The study employed exploratory sequential mixed methods design using case study methodology. Qualitative data was analysed and interpreted into codes and themes. Quantitative data was analysed using SPSS. Major findings: (1) Teachers reported that FIRST is comprehensive and compiles various educational theories, models and strategies, they were able to apply the principles and strategies in their classrooms immediately after the professional program days were over, (2) Student’s feedback and overall experience were enhanced, (3) Some schools has adopted FIRST as a learner experience. These findings recommended that teachers should live the TPD experience as learners. The TPD programs should include follow up phase to enhance teachers’ experience and encourage the transfer of learning into performance. Abstract (sommario):
The present work describes a Problem-Based Learning (PBL) activity implemented in an undergraduate course of Psychology of Groups. Additionally, considering the findings on the effects of PBL on cognitive and motivational components, we also explored the effect of the PBL activity on students’ information processing strategies and intrinsic motivation using a pre-post design. Only 28 students (25% men) completed the measures at both point times (pre and post-activity). Although no significant pre-post differences was found for any of the measured variables, the observed trend of change revealed mixed results. While for some cognitive strategies (e.g., critical thinking, information management, information transference) a trend towards improvement could be observed between the pre-post phases, for strategies of information elaboration and information acquisition the trend was reversed. Despite the non significant results, the present work contributes to the field of research on PBL in higher education by describing and testing the effects of a PBL activity implemented in a social discipline, a field in which PBL implementation is rather scarce.

Abstract (sommario):
Emotional contagion has been a focus problem in the current fields of psychology and organizational behavior. Based on the theoretical analysis of the emotional contagion mechanisms and probabilistic theory, a cellular automaton (CA) model has been proposed to simulate the process of emotional contagion. And with the help of this CA model, we study the gross features of employees’ positive emotions in the evolution of emotional contagion and explore the effects of employees’ ability to transport emotion susceptibility and intimacy on the reaction process. The results indicate that employees’ ability to transport positive emotion susceptibility and intimacy are positive related to the emotional contagion between employees.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract Creativity, a key component of engineering design, is not a static trait, but a skill that can be strategically enhanced. Neurostimulation methods, e.g., using electrical current to stimulate brain areas, have been reliably shown to improve creative performance. However, safety and ethical concerns present obstacles to the direct implementation of such methods in the engineering-design process. Thus, the current work explores whether creative performance can be enhanced using behavioral tasks that recruit the same brain regions targeted in neurostimulation studies. Study participants were 30 undergraduate students enrolled in an introductory psychology course. Two intervention tasks, a Stroop task and a finger-tapping pattern-matching task, each with easy and hard versions, were used in a 2 (task type) x 3 (task difficulty) within-subjects design. Relative to the pretest period, difficulty was manipulated by using versions of tasks with 1) predictable responses (easy) and 2) unpredictable responses (hard). Creativity in each experimental condition was assessed via the well-validated Alternative Uses Test (AUT). A multilevel analysis revealed a significant increase in fluency (number of alternative uses) as task difficulty increased regardless of task type. Flexibility (number of alternative-uses categories) also increased with task difficulty, but the effect was stronger for the Stroop task. These results suggest that high-difficulty versions of the selected tasks may be more effective in increasing AUT performance. Between the two tasks studied, the Stroop task has greater potential as a candidate to adapt as a behavioral intervention to improve creativity. Beyond the Stroop task, other behaviors, which activate brain regions that respond favorably to neurostimulation, may also be explored as the bases of interventions to improve creative performance in engineering design.

Abstract (sommario):
This paper develops and explores the interface between two related concepts in design decision making. First, design decision making is a process of simultaneously constructing one’s preferences while satisfying them. Second, design using computational models (e.g., simulation-based design and model-based design) is a sequential process that starts with low fidelity models for initial trades and progresses through models of increasing detail. Thus, decision making during design should be treated as a sequential decision process rather than as a single decision problem. This premise is supported by research from the domains of behavioral economics, psychology, judgment and decision making, neuroeconomics, marketing, and engineering design as reviewed herein. The premise is also substantiated by our own experience in conducting trade studies for numerous customers across engineering domains. The paper surveys the pertinent literature, presents supporting case studies and identifies use cases from our experiences, synthesizes a preliminary model of the sequential process, presents ongoing research in this area, and provides suggestions for future efforts.

Abstract (sommario):
The article clarifies of gender identity stereotypes in modern media. The main gender stereotypes covered in modern mass media are analyzed and refuted. The model of gender relations in the media is reflected mainly in the stereotypical images of men and woman. The features of the use of gender concepts in modern periodicals for women and men were determined. The most frequently used derivatives of these macroconcepts were identified and analyzed in detail. It has been found that publications for women and men are full of various gender concepts that are used in different contexts. Ingeneral, theanalysisofthe concept-maximums and concept-minimum gender and their characteristics is carried out in the context of gender stereotypes that have been forme dand function in the society, system atizing the a ctual presentations. The study of the gender concept is relevant because it reveals new trends and features of modern gender images. Taking into account the special features of gender-labeled periodicals in general and the practical absence of comprehensive scientific studies of the gender concept in particular, there is a need to supplement Ukrainian science with this topic. Gender psychology, which is served by methods of various sciences, primarily sociological, pedagogical, linguistic, psychological, socio-psychological. Let us pay attention to linguistic and psycholinguistic methods in gender studies. Linguistic methods complement intelligence research tasks, associated with speech, word and text. Psycholinguistic methods used in gender psychology (semantic differential, semantic integral, semantic analysis of words and texts), aimed at studying speech messages, specific mechanisms of origin and perception, functions of speech activity in society, studying the relationship between speech messages and gender properties participants in the communication, to analyze the linguistic development in connection with the general development of the individual. Nowhere in gender practice there is the whole arsenal of psychological methods that allow you to explore psychological peculiarities of a person like observation, experiments, questionnaires, interviews, testing, modeling, etc. The methods of psychological self-diagnostics include: the gender aspect of the own socio-psychological portrait, a gender biography as a variant of the biographical method, aimed at the reconstruction of individual social experience. In the process of writing a gender autobiography, a person can understand the characteristics of his gender identity, as well as ways and means of their formation. Socio-psychological methods of studying gender include the study of socially constructed women’s and men’s roles, relationships and identities, sexual characteristics, psychological characteristics, etc. The use of gender indicators and gender approaches as a means of socio-psychological and sociological analysis broadens the subject boundaries of these disciplines and makes them the subject of study within these disciplines. And also, in the article a combination of concrete-historical, structural-typological, system-functional methods is implemented. Descriptive and comparative methods, method of typology, modeling are used. Also used is a method of content analysis for the study of gender content of modern gender-stamped journals. It was he who allowed quantitatively to identify and explore the features of the gender concept in the pages of periodicals for women and men. A combination of historical, structural-typological, system-functional methods is also implemented in the article. Descriptive and comparative methods, method of typology, modeling are used. A method of content analysis for the study of gender content of modern gender-labeled journals is also used. It allowed to identify and explore the features of the gender concept quantitatively in the periodicals for women and men. The conceptual perception and interpretation of the gender concept «woman», which is highlighted in the modern gender-labeled press in Ukraine, requires the elaboration of the polyfunctionality of gender interpretations, the comprehension of the metaphorical perception of this image and its role and purpose in society. A gendered approach to researching the gender content of contemporary periodicals for women and men. Conceptual analysis of contemporary gender-stamped publications within the gender conceptual sphere allows to identify and correlate the meta-gender and gender concepts that appear in society.
