Abstract (sommario):

Experimental film is an important type of cinematic expression that originated from Europe in the 20th century. The content of experimantal film is more flexible and diverse than any other cinematic form. However, people nowadays seem to prefer traditional Hollywood films than experimental films. This paper analyses on experimental films. The reasons why experimental film works are not as popular among the general public as mainstream films may involve a variety of factors, including the nature of art, audience acceptance and aesthetic habits, limitations in publicity and marketing, cultural differences and language restrictions, film industry and commercialization pressures, financial and production conditions, as well as the influence of social and cultural backgrounds. The combination of these factors may make experimental film works more limited in terms of popularity, popularity and box office performance among the general public. However, as an art form, experimental film works still have their unique value and significance. By breaking away from traditional film forms, structures and contents, experimental film works usually explore newm artistic expressions, challenge audiences aesthetic experiences, and provoke thoughts and discussions. These works may have a profound impact on niche and specific audience groups, promoting the innovation and development of film art.

Optical films have been prepared on K9 glass by electronic beam evaporation. Parameters of S-polarized Nd: YAG laser used for pretreatment and damage tests are: wavelength is 355nm, pulse width is 8ns, and incidence angle is 33.75 degree. The results reflect that: the influence of laser pretreatment on laser induced damage threshold of films is uncertain. Laser pretreatment not always improve the laser induced damage threshold of films, and sometimes it will cause negative influence. As for damage probability, for a certain testing energy density, there is an energy density scope, pretreatment pulse with energy density in which can reduce the laser induced damage probability of films. The energy density of laser pretreatment pulse should be selected according to the serving conditions of films.

Abstract (sommario):

Film adaptation is a popular approach to game design, but it prioritizes blockbuster films and conventional “game-like” qualities of those films, such as shooting, racing, or spatial exploration. This leads to adaptations that tend to use the aesthetics and narratives of films, but which miss out on potential design explorations of more complex cinematic qualities. In this article, I propose an experimental game design method that prioritizes an unconventional selection of films alongside strict game design constraints to explore tensions and affinities between cinema and videogames. By applying this design method and documenting the process and results, I am able both to present an experimental set of videogame film adaptations, along with potentially generative design and development themes. In the end, the project serves as an illustration of the nature of adaptation itself: a series of pointed compromises between the source and the new work.

Common transparent polymer films, such as cellophane and household tape, are frequently used as examples of birefringent materials in textbooks and classroom demonstrations. Qualitatively, birefringence is often demonstrated by layering such films between crossed-polarizers. In this work, we describe an inexpensive experimental setup for the quantitative measurement of birefringence in common household films, suitable for senior high school or undergraduate labs. Whereas traditional approaches for polarization-based classroom experiments typically use monochromatic laser light, we encourage the combined use of an incoherent incandescent light source and a portable spectrometer. In addition, we demonstrate how any concomitant thin-film interference effects can be used to separately measure the optical thickness in the most heterogeneous and uniform films. Such measurement can then be used as an independent experimental confirmation of either the film's index of refraction or its thickness, given knowledge of the other. In an effort to provide examples for the data analysis procedures as well as to investigate a range of materials, we measure the birefringence across the visible spectrum of six common household polymer films, including thin kitchen wrap, cellophane, gift basket film, and common adhesive tapes.

Summary Optimization of foam treatments requires modeling or simulation of the process using a foam model that is capable of reproducing the critical properties of foam. In this work we present a simple model that is based on the relative permeability concept, and is well suited for simulation of foam processes with conventional or slightly modified numerical simulators. The model can unify understanding of a number of phenomena that characterizes foam flow. The validity of the model is substantiated by experimental data. A consistent interpretation of foam breakdown, shear thinning effects, permeability effects, and effects of system pressure is possible with the model for gas relative permeability in foam presented. Introduction Foam can be used in reservoir engineering for control of gas flow in reservoirs. By injection of gas and surfactant-containing water, foam can be generated in a formation, and the mobility of the gas be reduced. The macroscopic effect of a large number of foam films in the pore system is determined by the properties of the individual foam films, the number of foam films, and the properties of the three-dimensional network of open pores where gas can flow. One previous effort to model foam flow was the mechanistic approach, where these entities were accounted for explicity.1 Another approach was to identify all factors that influence macroscopic foam flow, and parameterize them in an empirical foam mobility function that reproduces experimental foam behavior.2 Important factors are flow rate, oil saturation, absolute permeability, foam quality, and surfactant concentration. The model presented here falls somewhere in between the mechanistic and the completely empirical approaches. Here, physical arguments are used to advocate a particular shape of the gas relative permeability curve to be used for foam flow, and physically reasonable rules for how this shape should change with changing flow conditions (rates, permeability, system pressure, etc.). The model presented is empirical in the sense that it requires calibration to laboratory data for a specific foam system. Its predictive power is improved compared to a purely empirical model; because a physically reasonable dependence of foam properties on flow conditions is built in, the number of degrees of freedom is reduced. Theory The assumption forming the basis for this work is that the relative permeability concept is equally accurate for the flow of the foam constituents, gas and surfactant solution, as it is for the flow of any other pair of phases. Because foam films contain water, moving films could potentially constitute an extra path for transport for water at a given water saturation. This would change the water relative permeability curve relative to that in the no-foam case. This does not seem to be the case however. Bernard et al.3 have shown that the relative permeability curve for surfactant solution in foam is equal to the curve for water in ordinary water-gas flow. This must mean that the water flows in the same channels whether there is foam in the porous medium or not, and that foam films transport only insignificant amounts of water, either because they do not move, or because they contain too little water. The foam films do influence the mobility of gas however. Foam films span the pore throats in the same manner as films span the ring of a children's toy bubble generator. Gas cannot flow through pore channels that contain films, unless the films move or rupture. Macroscopically, the mobility reduction of gas in porous media by foams is determined by the interplay among many films in many pore channels. The number of films per unit volume is believed to be given by a dynamic balance between film generation and rupture processes.1 The resulting effects on the gas relative permeability curve for foam is discussed next. Single Foam Films. Single foam films form the basis for understanding the behavior of foam in a porous medium. In the present work, the effects of both capillary pressure and of viscous pressure gradients on single foam films are considered. Capillary Pressure Effects. The theory for static film stability considers the forces acting between the two surfaces on each side of a water film. These forces are described by the disjoining pressure,4 ?, which varies with film thickness. Parallel to the definition of capillary pressure, Pc as the difference between pressures in the gas and water phases over a curved interface, the disjoining pressure is the difference between gas and water pressures over a flat film surface, caused by interactions between the two film surfaces. The water pressure in a thin film can be expressed by pg ?? where pg is the gas pressure outside the film. Elsewhere in the pore, the water pressure is pg?P c. As long as Pc>? the water pressure in the film exceeds that of the surrounding water, and the resulting pressure gradient drives water out of the film. A pressure balance is obtained at the thickness where Pc=?.5 In this theory, foam films are supposed to rupture whenever the capillary pressure in the porous medium exceeds the maximum disjoining pressure that the films exhibit. Rupture of thin liquid films by the application of high capillary pressures can be observed in studies of single films.5 Viscous Pressure Gradients. A foam film that is stable against capillary drainage will not necessarily block gas flow. Such films may flow or rupture because of the viscous pressure gradient, like a film in a bubble toy that is blown too hard. This is because there is a geometrical limit to the pressure drop a static film can support. Over a single film that blocks gas flow, there will be a pressure difference, pg1? pg2, generated by gas flow elsewhere in the porous medium. The pressure drop can be related to the pore geometry and the surface tension of the surfactant solution, ?, through the Young-Laplace equation, which states that p g 1 − p g 2 = 4 Î³ s i n α / r . ( 1 ) The geometrical parameters, r and ?, are defined in Fig. 1. The film is in mechanical equilibrium when the angle between the film and the pore wall is 90°. The group ?/r will have a local maximum in every pore. If the pressure drop exceeds the value corresponding to the maximum ?/r the film cannot remain in that pore, and it will flow and jump to the next pore. This will lead to flow of gas in the pore: either the flow that accompanies film movement, or, if the film ruptures during the jump, the flow that will take place in an open pore. Foams at the Limiting Capillary Pressure. From the existence of a maximum disjoining pressure for foam films, consequences for the macroscopic behavior of foams in porous media can be deduced.6

This paper examines the background, development and production of the film ‘Songs of the immigrant bride’ and explains the general decisions made throughout the creation of the film. It proposes the idea that visuals, combined in an abstract narrative with music/sound, can create a language outside that generally accepted in real-time film (generally) and animation (specifically) to create a communicating ‘mythopoetic’ film-style from combined, selected elements, of both genres. Some of the issues presented and examined are: how relevant background experiences and influences directed the image-making in the production of the film; the experimental use of symbols and metaphor for an ‘evocative’ narrative in both visuals and sound, and the use of these within the film; the relevance of the theme of journey to viewers of the film; the part played by ‘Chance’ as an accepted phenomenon in shaping the direction of the film; production considerations, other than those of image and sound, to enhance audience perception and understanding of the film; ‘understanding’, as a physical as well as an intellectual phenomenon

The commentary addresses the works in the Research Portfolio (2010-2016) which consists of three films and one multi-media installation. These films are experimental but look very different from my previous work. This reflects my decision to address figuration and realist representation in order to expand and develop my experimental film language. The works are collective and individual portraits of women in monastic life, and one is a portrait of a young girl in a Catholic iconography. In these new works I find out what happens when you insert direct works about religion into an art space that is not expecting them and has no context ready for them. My aim is to see how that changes and tests the binaries of religion/art, traditional/experimental. The commentary investigates the works through a Catholic framing/perspective; close reading as a method of viewing the work, and a feminist analysis that provides gendered readings of the works. These three come together to open a space of reflection and a critical perspective on the films. The commentary shows how the works open a space for a religious subject to emerge: one not hitherto represented in the context of experimental film.

Ao enfocar o filme de família no contexto da produção pós-moderna, esta dissertação tem por intenção debater a questão da autenticidade, bem como o processo de legitimação cultural de sub-gêneros fílmicos afins surgidos na década de 60, como o filme diário e o filme pessoal. A proliferação deste tipo de produção uma espécie de meio-termo entre auto-etnografias e filmes de arte - desafia as ciências sociais e, mais especificamente, a antropologia visual contemporânea a compreender a emergência de novas formas audiovisuais de representação social. A partir do estudo pioneiro de Bourdieu sobre a função social da fotografia, debate-se a estetização do território familiar e a função social do filme amador.
Focusing on the home movies in the context of post-modern culture, this dissertation intends to debate the question of authenticity, as well as the process of cultural legitimation of filmic sub-genres originated in the sixties: the diary film and the personal film. The proliferation of this type of film production something in-between the autoethnographies and the art films challenges the social sciences and, more specifically, the contemporary visual anthropology to understand the appearance of new audiovisual forms of social representation. The important work of Bourdieu on the social rules of photography is a starting point to debate the aesthetics of private family domain and the social rules of amateur film

This thesis analyses the effect of the personal history of Arthur and Corinne Cantrill, two Australian independent filmmakers, on their style of filmmaking. It analyses their representation of film-form experimentation within national Australian art in a range of independent film works. It reflects on their cultural relation to the general history of independent filmmaking in Australia, America and Europe. It studies the circumstances tat resulted in the appearance of the Cantrills' experimental film and their relation to international art theories and film experimentation. This thesis will examine how the Cantrills' film works, which were often critical of conventional filmmaking styles, and their critical writing, statements and promotion of their independent and experimental film work contributed significantly to theoretical discussion and argument about the physical nature of film within Australia. This examination is explored through asking and answering the central question: The work of Aurtheur and Corinne Cantrell is theoretically drawn from a tradition of European arts and visually drawn from Australian landscape and urban culture; can their work be identified and undertood as Australian art?

Abstract (sommario):

We have described how the first hyperpolarizability, β, varies as a function of ground-state polarization and bond length alternation, BLA.1 Previously, our predictions of this relationship were derived by examining an prototypical push-pull polyene under the presence of static homogenous electric field.1 In order to develop a more realistic understanding of how real molecules behave in solution, we have now examined both p-nitroaniline and the push-pull polyene 1,1-dicyano-6-dibutylamino-hexatriene at the Hartree Fock ab initio level on the basis of an expanded Self Consistent Reaction-Field approach to simulate solvents with dielectric constants up to 37.5. The calculations were carried out using both spherical and elliptical cavities and taking into account multipole interactions up to 26 poles. Predictions were compared to Hyper-Rayleigh Scattering (HRS) results determined by Persoons et al. As had been shown earlier,2 the second-order NLO response of 1,1-dicyano-6-dibutylamino-hexatriene exhibits a peak as a function of solvent polarity, which was confirmed by the HRS measurements. Interestingly, we found that this peaked behavior of β as a function of solvent dielectric constant was predicted only when an elliptical cavity and the up to l = 6 pole contributions were taken into account, but was not observed when the calculations employed either an elliptical cavity and a dipole (l = 1) approximation, or a spherical cavity with up to l = 6 pole contributions. These results suggest that it is possible to model the geometric and electronic structure of polarizable molecules using a Self Consistent Reaction-Field approach, but it is necessary to build into the calculations mechanisms to account for the subtleties of the molecular charge distributions, not taken into account within a simple dipole approximation.

Using an online multi-country video-vignette survey experiment, we measure bias against extractive industries and foreign firms in individuals perceptions and preferences related to industrial projects with potential economic benefits and environmental costs. Individuals face a hypothetical industrial investment project with a randomly assigned implementing firm, which varies in one or two dimensions: nationality (foreign or national), and industrial sector (extractive or generic). We elicit several incentivized and non-incentivized measures of acceptance of hypothetical investments. We find a precisely estimated null effect on willingness to pay to block the projects across experimental treatments: respondents express similar reactions to the same information independently of the firms origin or industrial sector.

Abstract (sommario):

Knowledge of flow regime, holdup and pressure drop is needed in order to design gas and oil pipelines confidently and to minimize construction and operating costs. Previous public studies of two-phase flow in inclined pipes have used small diameter pipes two inches in diameter or less, and have primarily used air and water as the working fluids at low pressure (near one atmosphere). Present design methods are based upon the results of these experiments. In most advanced analyses available today, the flow regime transition is governed by a Froude number, the balance between inertial and buoyancy forces. The primary objective of the work has been to obtain experimental data to challenge the present two-phase flow analysis methods for large pipe size, high gas density, and pipe inclination. Present analysis and design methods for two-phase flow in pipelines are based on correlations of data from small pipes of order 2-inches diameter or less, for air-water flows at pressures near one atmosphere. To achieve this objective, Creare performed experiments in an existing test facility with a special test section assembled for this project. Pipe diameter and gas density are closer to prototypical oil and gas pipeline conditions than previous experiments reported in the literature. The key experimental results include flow regime observations, pressure drops, and holdup measurements. The instrumentation in the test facility allows detailed characteristics of the flow such as slug velocity, slug frequency, liquid film velocity, and slug length to be measured in the slug flow regime.

This paper examines the effectiveness of carbon taxes on macroeconomic performance when manufacturing firms have the opportunity to change their scale of operation and degree of formality. The hypothesis is that when tax evasion or elusion is possible, it cannot be ruled out that emissions increase rather than decrease due to the reallocation of resources from the rest of manufacturing towards informal small-scale firms. When informality is high, industry could adapt to carbon taxes by reducing the scale of operation of big firms and increasing the number of small firms. However, when taxes are enforceable in all types of firms, there is a cost in terms of GDP and employment, since small-scale firms are more labor intensive. For numerical experiments, two CGE models calibrated for Argentina and Mexico are used. The 'domestic leakage' is found to be more relevant for Argentina than for Mexico.
