Abstract (sommario):

Violence against women, of which intimate partner violence (IPV) is a significant part, is a widespread public health problem. There is a great need for effective programs that address this issue. The objective of this study was to explore the experiences expressed by the members of the Karla network whose purpose was to combat IPV. Due to the nature of the study, a qualitative approach was taken and data was gathered through interviews with professionals in the network. The function of collaboration and its impact on the individuals is highlighted by the core category: Striving for progress. The categories that resulted from the analysis were: 1) Achieving professional satisfaction, 2) Developing professional competence, and 3) Treading water. Working within the network was perceived as rewarding, as the network improved the quality of their work. Updated guidelines and routines were regarded as essential to improve the collaboration. To progress in the work against IPV, methods to recognize and attend to abused women should be refined and implemented. More focus needs to be put on preventive actions. There is reason to direct actions toward children and adolescents and thus the arenas that initially should be engaged are media, school, and youth clinics.

Selenga, Melitah Annastatia. "The support of professional nurses to youth victims of physical violence at a community health centre in the Cape Flats". University of the Western Cape, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/11394/4693.

Abstract (sommario):
Magister Curationis - MCur
The Western Cape Province of South Africa has the worst multifactorial crime problem in the country. It has the fastest growing crime rate in many crime categories, such as rape and gun related incidents. The youth in the Cape Flats faces many challenges, such as drug abuse and high incidents of violent attacks. The youth who are exposed to violence are inclined to be violent themselves and are at a higher risk of psychopathology. The experiences of the youth after a violent physical incident were unclear. The purpose of this study is to describe actions for the support of professional nurses at a community health centre to youth victims of physical violence in the Cape Flats. A phenomenological, exploratory, descriptive, contextual design was followed in this study. This study explored and described the lived experiences of youth victims of physical violence in terms of the support they received in a natural setting at a community health centre in the Cape Flats. Purposive sampling was used for the study, and data saturation determined the size of the sample, that was eight participants. Participants were male and female youth members between the ages of 18 and 27 years who had experienced a violent incident and visited a health care centre for follow-up treatment. They were given information sheets that explained the nature of the research project. Individual in-depth interviews were used to collect data. Interviews were conducted in one of the consultation rooms at a community health centre that was quiet and where minimal interruptions occurred. The researcher sought permission from the participants to conduct the interviews and to audio record those interviews. All ethical principles were adhered to in this study; that is confidentiality, anonymity, withdrawal, autonomy, and informed consent. Trust worthiness was ensured during the research process. In cases where participants had experienced psychological distress, they could be referred to a psychologist. However, none of the participants displayed any signs of emotional discomfort during the interviews. Data was analysed using Creswell’s six steps of open coding. All data would be kept under lock and key for five years after the research report has been made available. Main themes that emerged from the data analysis were related to violent incidents that had a negative impact on the participant; participants applied defence mechanisms to deal with their trauma, and participants experienced care and support either negatively or positively. A recommendation of this study is the implementation of an in-service training programme to the nurses who care for the youth after violent physical incidents.

Abstract (sommario):
Violence and threats of violence is described as a common and relevant issue in various care units. Mental health care workers often feel frustrated and unsatisfied in their work with mentally ill patients. Experienced mental health care workers find that learning how to treat and cope with violent patients is beneficial. The aim of this study was to gain knowledge and understanding of mental health care workers experiences and perspectives on workplace violence. The method used was qualitative semi-structured interviews with mental health care workers ofdifferent care facilities. The results found that the patients’ illness appear to be the source of the violence. The environment can also be a source of violence. Violence was common in caring situations, particularly when mental health careworkers were physically close to their patients. The mental health care workers experienced feelings of anger, humiliation, remorse, and helplessness. The participants expressed that they questioned their own abilities and at times believed that their ability to communicate with patients and relax them was inadequate. Colleagues, relatives, and friends were perceived to be the most supportive, and the most common way of coping with violence in the workplace. Furthermore, the conclusion of the study is that the environment must be adjusted to meet the needs of the mental health care workers in meetings with threatful and violent patients. Mental health care workers need education and guidance on how to proceed as well as encouragement to report violent incidents.

Abstract (sommario):
Approximately two women are killed each week by a former or current partner (Coleman & Osbourne, 2010); yet many people ask why women stay in their respective relationships. The aim of this thesis was to explore the experiences and perceptions of victims in disclosure to the health care service, as for many victims this may be their first point of contact (Richardson & Feder, 1996). This thesis contains a systematic review, an empirical research study, a case study and a critique of a psychometric measure. Overall, the findings of this thesis demonstrate that although victims' decisions to leave their abusive partners can be difficult, there are certain factors that may help victims to leave such as receiving external support. The systematic review in this thesis investigated the experiences and perceptions of victims in disclosure to the health care service; the review revealed a lack of studies in the UK in this area. However, the findings of this review were still deemed to be useful as they provided insight into the barriers and facilitators that women experience when disclosing to the health care service. An empirical investigation was also conducted that explored the experiences of disclosure of 29 victims to the UK health service; barriers and facilitators were identified that supported the findings from the systematic review. The case study of a female who had experienced domestic violence was used in this thesis. This case study supported the fact that victims may develop low self-esteem as a result of abuse and may benefit from psychological interventions. A critique of the Abusive Behaviour Inventory (ABI), a psychometric measure used in both empirical studies, was included in this thesis and recommendations were made to improve the tool’s use. This tool failed to take into consideration individual differences in victims.

Abstract (sommario):
Background: Violence against women is a major global public health issue, which has an impact on women’s lives and mental health. Aim: To explore healthcare experiences of women exposed to intimate partner violence. Method: Literature based study with eleven qualitative studies. Results: The women who sought help felt ashamed for the violence and most of them didn’t get the help they needed. They felt that the caregivers didn’t believe in their stories or their experiences. The health care professionals made them feel like objects and not human beings. Few women had a good experience of the care they were given, in those cases the caregivers had asked the women about the violence and gave them time to talk and made them feel safe and comfortable. Conclusion: Nearly all of the women had feelings of shame and guilt. They wanted the caregiver to ask them about the violence, because they found it hard to reveal it themselves. Caregivers need more knowledges about intimate partner violence and its impact on the women to offer right kind of help. They also need guidelines to know how to meet and help these women.

Abstract (sommario):

Introduction: Intimate partner violence (IPV) against women is a big public health problem and every year about 17 women die in Sweden as a consequence of this. When the women seek healthcare, there can be a unique opportunity to discover IPV. Aim: The aim was to describe how women subjected to IPV experience how they were handled by healthcare professionals (HCP). Method: An overview based on 14 scientific articles was made. Result: The women experienced that the HCP did not have the courage to question about IPV but they had positive experiences regarding that the HCP sat down and listened. The result also showed a lack of respect for the integrity and autonomy and that the HCP often only treated the injuries and forgot about their psychological well-being. Discussion: Four central findings were highlighted; the HCP do not have the courage to ask about IPV, positive handling regarding the HCP were presence and listened, the lack of respect and not to be taken seriously and that the psychological well-being was forgotten. Conclusion: Most of the women experienced that the HCP did not handle them in the way they wanted, which resulted in the women not getting the help they needed.

Abstract (sommario):
This study employed Foucauldian Discourse Analysis to explore some of the ways professionals drew upon discourses to construct Immigrant Black, Minority Ethnic and Refugee (BMER) women who experience domestic violence. This analysis focused on the functions the discourses served; how the immigrant women were positioned within the discourses; and the material consequences they may have. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with nine professionals working in generic and BMER-specific domestic violence services as well as statutory, BMER community and women's services. This study adopted a post-modern feminist perspective positioned within a poststructuralist, social constructionist epistemology. In this study, Kimberle Crenshaw's Intersectionality framework was utilised to examine the intersectionality of race, gender, culture, immigration status and domestic violence, as well as Foucault's concepts of power, subject positions and institutional practice. Three main discourses are discussed in the analysis for the purposes of this study. These are a) 'Culture as All-Encompassing': the centralisation of culture in understanding immigrant women; b) 'Women as Not Genuine': the questioning of immigrant women as genuine victims of domestic violence; and c) 'Women as Dependent': the difficulties working with immigrant women who require a lot of support. However, some of the professionals expressed resistance towards these discourses and constructed immigrant women as individuals, genuine and brave. Therefore, immigrant women were constructed in conflicting ways by the professionals interviewed, which resulted in different material effects. The implications for these are discussed in relation to service provision for immigrant BMER women who experience domestic violence.

Abstract (sommario):
In Sweden, honour-related oppression has received more attention in recent years at the political and academic level but also in social work. Honour-related problems are largely in conflict with the rights and freedoms of children and women, and attempts have been made to alleviate the issue. The purpose of this master thesis is to examine the professionals’ experiences of the challenges of cooperation, support and personal treatment of girls and young women who are exposed to honour-related oppression. The professionals mainly represent the social services and other actors who work with honour-related problems, such ashealth care personnel. Based on a qualitative approach using focus group and individual interviews, the results illustrate the importance of cooperation and knowledge when working with girls and young women who are exposed to honour-related oppression. The study illustrates challenges for cooperation, such as professional confidentiality, and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the professional’s work with the matter. Honour-related oppression can be described as a challenging problem that still needs further recognition in society. The study can contribute to the work of social services and other actors by presenting challenges and opportunities for the work with honour-related oppression

Abstract (sommario):
The main aim of this research is to examine the possible links between cancer decompensation and work situations experienced as violent and traumatic. Based on her clinical experience in an onco-haematology department, and following a number of encounters with subjects who cited the professional sphere as the cause of their illness, the author wished to carry out more extensive and precise field investigations into this subject. The aim was to find out how many subjects were potentially 'work-sick', and to talk to them in order to identify the conscious and unconscious movements that, in their view, contributed to such a somatic situation, among other factors. The clinical interviews with twenty subjects, who were highly committed to their work, highlighted the effects of (ob)scenalisation of the unconscious scene on the professional scene, and the possible traumatic collision between these two scenes. Her theoretical hypotheses enabled the author to propose an understanding of these movements through the existence of an ego-pro linked to institutional envelopes - made up of the institution, the work organisation and the various groups to which the worker belongs - which would serve the subject's psychic and somatic equilibrium when his subjectivity unfolds at work. Conversely, when subjectivity is prevented, the author has shown how elements previously contained and/or metabolised can come back and echo the unbound elements of the amential unconscious, causing serious somatisation (the original and primary dysfiliation collapsing in a traumatic way with professional disaffiliation)

Newham, Kate Josephine. "Complex, emotional and difficult : deconstructing the experiences of professionals in violent crime cases". Thesis, University of Salford, 2006. http://usir.salford.ac.uk/26833/.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
"Complex, emotional and difficult" encapsulates both the experiences of the professionals involved in the three research cases as well as the experience as a research student while conducting this small-scale qualitative study. The research focuses upon three British violent crime cases in the late 1980s and early 1990s, case one being that of the murder of a student, case two being the torture and murder of a woman by multiple perpetrators and case three being the case of a multiple rapist. Using in depth interviews and documentary analysis of newspaper and court transcripts, the thesis deconstructs the partially closed world of the criminal case through the eyes of the professionals involved. It focuses on the role of the researcher and the impact of their relationship with their subjects in the interview situation. The difficulty and unpredictable nature of access negotiations is also explored as well as other methodological processes. The thesis examines the interplay of notions of masculinity, truth and evil as they figure in the personal, cultural and situational properties of the police, legal professionals and media. It examines the gendering of the criminal justice system and the media. It is argued that masculinity is very important in understanding the construction of the cases. The thesis explores the constructions of criminal masculinity produced by the different professionals. The police and other professional give ample demonstration in their interviews that they operate with logics of binary opposites, contrasting their own masculinity with the deviant masculinity of the offender. Truth is seen as an essentially contested concept to be approached through the lens of particular value systems and power structures. Dominant perspectives emerge on the development of procedural truth in the construction of the cases. The research also examines the use of the idea of evil to explain violent criminality, finding it being used as a catch-all term questioning the validity of criminological explanations by those who deal with violent crime professionally. Overall the thesis seeks to help the reader understand the complex process involved in constructing criminal cases from the police investigation through to the legal trial.

Bracewell, Kelly Anne. "Teenagers' experiences of domestic violence refuges". Thesis, University of Central Lancashire, 2017. http://clok.uclan.ac.uk/20513/.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Refuges have been central to UK domestic violence service provision since the 1970s. Early studies focused on the needs of adult women but increasingly, children and teenagers have also become the business of refuges. Much of the existing research regarding users’ experiences of refuges has, however, failed to distinguish the needs of teenagers (aged 13 to 18 years) from those of adult women and younger children. This study aims to redress this balance by examining the current service response provided by refuges for teenagers. Teenagers aged 16 and 17 are now incorporated within the Government definition of domestic violence and abuse in England and Wales (Home Office, 2013). This policy shift requires refuges to ensure appropriate provision for under-18s. The research investigates how teenagers experience refuges and whether refuge provision responds effectively to the needs and rights of teenagers. The findings can be used to inform policy and service development. This study is influenced by elements of feminist theory and the sociology of childhood which prioritise subjective understandings of experience and children’s agency. Data collection took place in refuges across the North West, East and West Midlands of England. It involved telephone interviews with 25 members of staff and face to face repeat interviews using participatory methods with 20 teenagers, resulting in 89 interviews. Originality resides in the detailed exploration of teenagers’ experiences across the length of their refuge stay and, in some cases, into their new homes. Interviews revealed an absence of educational, emotional and social support throughout the period of a teenager’s stay, and the picture was similar upon resettlement from the refuge. Difficulties experienced by teenagers during their refuge residence related to specific features of adolescence; refuges’ focus on safety and protectionism was particularly problematic for adolescent development. Refuge life was found to have severe negative effects on teenagers’ education. This study found that refuges are currently missing opportunities to reduce harm and promote prevention of future domestic violence and abuse by building teenagers’ resilience. This thesis argues for attitudinal change as well as relevant resources. The research highlights the shortcomings of refuges and links them to conceptions of victimhood in refuge policy and the changing nature and reduction of services. These conditions are restricting refuges’ ability to respect, protect and meet the rights of teenagers. This thesis advocates for teenagers to have greater visibility and recognition as service users in their own right.

Barter, Christine. "Researching young people's experiences of peer violence". Thesis, University of Bristol, 2013. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.633130.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Peer violence is a highly contested area of child welfare in which moral panics surrounding children's and young people's use of violence, linked to anxiety and trepidation about the construction of childhood itself, have stifled measured debate. I believe that my work over the past 15 years, presented in this PhD, provides a significant contribution to knowledge in this area of child welfare. The work presented here derives from three studies on peer violence covering two areas of child welfare: peer violence in residential children's homes; and teenage intimate partner violence and control. The findings from this body of work provide a considered and comprehensive response to the above conceptualisation, prioritising both children and young people's experiences and agency, whilst acknowledging the wider social and structural inequalities which underpin peer violence. The publications have been selected to illustrate my work's original contribution to developing knowledge in the following areas: • Advancing theoretical understanding of peer violence through the interception between the sociology of childhood and gender violence theory. • Exploring young people's views and experiences of peer violence • Enhancing methodological knowledge of researching young people's experiences of violence. • Recognising and responding to the welfare concerns of adolescents through developing understanding, policy and practice.

Abulaban, Hiam. "Undergraduate student nurses experiences of vertical violence". Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/45320.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Vertical violence is the term used to describe abusive and bullying behaviours among a group of people with unequal power. Vertical violence is used in this study because the recipients of abusive behaviours are students. The goal of this phenomenological study was to elicit a description of the lived experience of nursing students with vertical violence during their clinical placements in three major hospitals in Palestine. Findings suggest that nursing students are experiencing and witnessing bullying behaviours in different forms, most notably by staff nurses and head nurses. Students reported that their experiences with vertical violence lessen as they advance in their clinical education and gain more skills. The majority of the students told someone about their experiences. Experiencing vertical violence was found to impact the students' learning, socialization and clinical practice. The students reported using different coping strategies to deal with vertical violence. Implications for practice include ensuring that if the issue of vertical violence is not dealt with, it will have a detrimental effect on the student nurses and on their practice. Recommendations include providing policies to address this issue and provide reporting guidelines for student nurses. Also teaching nursing students and nurses about vertical violence is to be a top priority for the schools of nursing and hospital managements.

Brown, Eleanor. "Women and children's experiences of domestic violence". Thesis, University of Warwick, 2014. http://wrap.warwick.ac.uk/64308/.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Chapter One examines the literature on children’s experiences of domestic violence. The research reviewed indicates that within the same family children can have different experiences of domestic violence. Within the literature five common themes were identified; children’s experiences of abuse, responses to and effects of domestic violence, coping and sense making, impact on relationships and access to services and support. Children consistently experienced feelings of fear towards the perpetrator and a sense of responsibility for their mother’s well-being. Further qualitative research was recommended to identify different children’s resilience’s. Chapter Two explores the unique perspective of mother’s experiences of their relationship with their children within the context of domestic violence. IPA analysis indicated that domestic violence led the women to experience shame and see themselves as a ‘bad mother’. They attempted to distance themselves against this uncomfortable emotion by experiencing their child as a ‘bad child’. There were areas of resilience and agency as the women interviewed altered their parenting style and consequently their relationship with their child once leaving the relationship. Chapter Three provides reflections on the research journey. This includes the author’s experiences of methodological and ethical issues relating to conducting research with women who have experienced domestic violence, particularly with regards to the utilization of the principles of feminist and empowering methods.

In a country in which human rights feature prominently in our discourse about who we are, as well as in the South African constitutional and legal framework, so many wrongs continue to be perpetrated on women and children. However, children seem to be particularly affected by domestic violence, either physically, emotionally or socially. In order to adequately address these diverse experiences and understand what children say, an in-depth investigation into how children experience domestic violence, and what their views are, is required. The study will focus on those children who had been affected emotionally and socially in their homes. This study will make an attempt to expand on how children experience domestic violence, what the general reaction of a selected group of children, who have observed domestic violence, is and what their views of domestic violence are. Attention was given to the relevant literature as well to legislative and policy frameworks. The study employed a qualitative research method in order to obtain in-depth data from the children. Children were selected from three schools in a small Northern Cape town, which participated in the study and the schools were grouped as follows: one school from each area, which are Nonzwakazi, Sunrise and De Aar (town). Each high school had five participants. The participants‟ ages were between 12 and 17. All the participants reside at De Aar which is situated in Prixley kaSeme District about 300 kilometres from Kimberley, Northern Cape Province. Data was coded according to the themes that emerged from the study and were analysed. The results indicated that children are able to share their experiences when given the opportunity. It is further shown in the results that children view domestic violence as a wrong and that men are the sole abusers. It further indicated that children do not have confidence in the courts; they are of the view that the courts are being too lenient on the abusers and they further said that more protection orders should be issued in order to prevent domestic violence. They blame this on non-responsiveness of the police when they are called and the kind of punishments the courts impose when the abuser is brought before court. The majority of children expressed their wish to see justice being done. The study found that children are of the view that there is little support from the police and the courts. The study concluded that children, acting voluntarily and with appropriate ethical safeguards, can make a significant contribution to both describing their experiences of domestic violence, and to indicating the standard of services and other interventions that they can trust and use.

Abstract (sommario):
Gun violence is a problem in many communities across the United States that are characterized by poverty, and lack of quality education, yet little is known about the experiences of victims of gun violence in these places. The purpose of this phenomenological study was to better understand how people who have been victims of gun violence perceive problems and solutions associated with the production, distribution, and ownership of guns. Based on the theoretical framework of Rousseau's social contract theory, this study explored gun violence from the perspectives of 10 victims whose lives were directly or indirectly affected by gun violence to understand how victims perceive the obligations of government to the governed in terms of response to gun violence. Data from individual interviews were subjected to selective and open coding followed by a thematic analysis procedure. The key findings from this study revealed that gun violence victims were able to differentiate between the intended use of firearms and its abuse. The victims associated the abuse of firearms to deteriorating social factors. In accordance with the classic premise of the social contract theory, the victims thought that the fight against gun violence needed to be led by the affected communities. The results of this study demonstrated what appeared to be a new rendition of theory, that instead of challenging local authorities, the victims opted for a leadership-based collaborative approach to eradicate the underlying social weaknesses that lead to gun violence. The conclusions drawn from this study may provide insight into appropriate measures that can aid in social uplift among affected communities, such as modifications to existing gun control laws to promote safety and efficiency and citizen collaboration toward improved regulation.

Abstract (sommario):

There is a gap in the research regarding structured collaborative processes and experiences that draws a parallel to the disconnections discovered between what is needed to be a successful teacher candidate in the field and what is taught through coursework and the lack of authentic experiences in teacher preparation programs such as collaboration. This qualitative case study seeks to expand the extant research by understanding and identifying perceptions and comfort with collaboration, as well as its impact. The study outlined one universities approach to strive to meet the competencies for accreditation and prepare highly effective professional educators with a focus on collaboration. This qualitative case study investigated the perceptions of novice teachers regarding ways in which collaboration impacted them and their teaching experiences and examined the perceptions of these novice teachers and their comfort with collaboration during their induction period.

Jewitt, Natalie Anne. "Foster carers' experiences of multi-professional working". Thesis, University of Leeds, 2014. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/8059/.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Introduction: This thesis explores foster carers’ experiences of multi-professional working. Despite previous research exploring multi-professional working from a range of different perspectives, an in-depth exploration of foster carers’ experiences has not been reported. As Looked After Children (LAC) are likely to have poorer outcomes across mental health and education, it is crucial that multi-professional working around LAC is effective to ensure their needs are met across all areas. With 75% of children in care being placed in foster placements a better understanding of the foster carers’ experiences of working within a multi-professional team is vital to improve our understanding of multi-professional working around children in care. Method: Nine foster carers were interviewed using a semi-structured interview method to obtain an in-depth qualitative account of their experiences of multi-professional working. The qualitative data was then transcribed and analysed thematically. Results: Three main themes were derived from the data: complexity of the foster carers’ role; importance of the foster carers’ relationship with social workers; and multi-professional team functioning. The findings showed that foster carers wanted to be included in multi-professional working. Their involvement was crucial as they were identified as the link between the LAC and the multi-professional team. Combining their roles as a parental figure within the family environment, and a professional foster carer within a multi-professional team, brought about an array of challenges, but when this combination was understood, managed and supported it was beneficial for both the multi-professional team and child in care. Foster carers’ relationships with social workers were found to be influential in determining foster carers’ experiences of fostering and multi-professional working. Discussion: The findings highlighted that multi-professional team’s need: clear leadership; clarity around purpose of team / meeting; a clear understanding of each member of the team’s roles and responsibilities; a consistent approach to information sharing; information to be shared with foster carers prior to placement; and more flexibility around communication methods. These findings are discussed in relation to previous research and implications reported. Recommendations for both practice and future research are then outlined.

Abstract (sommario):
This review paper investigated the effects of violence by people with mental health problems. It briefly considered the link between mental illness and violence, before reviewing the literature on the targets of violence from people with mental health problems, concurrently addressing methodological limitations. Family members and/or caregivers are often the victims of violent behaviour from individuals with mental health problems. The effects of this violence were reviewed, integrating findings from the literature on the effects of violent crime on individuals, the effects of domestic violence and the family burden literature. The conclusions drawn referred to the likely individual mental health needs of intrafamilial victims of violence and the possible impact of violence on ongoing familial relationships, whilst highlighting recommendations for future research.

Abstract (sommario):
This study intends to explore the very relevant and current issue of violence at school level. Through this case study the experiences of an educator with regard to violence in a secondary school are explored. Data for this study was collected through observation and unstructured interviews with the participant. Data collected was analysed through several phases of establishing thematic categories. This analysis was done within the parameters of a scientific literature framework. The six main categories were discussed and interpreted in terms of literature to provide the findings portrayed by the study. To ensure the dependability and quality of the data the study incorporated member checking and literature control. An attempt was made to contribute to, and expand upon, the existing body of knowledge with regard to this very important phenomenon. The results of this study show that the educator experiences violence in school as a very serious reality. This study argues that the causes of school violence should be studied from an integrative perspective and it supports the Bio-Ecological Systems theory as a multi-dimensional approach to understanding school violence.

Mat, Saat Geshina. "A comparative study of experiences of violence in Malaysian and English hospitals". Thesis, Loughborough University, 2010. https://dspace.lboro.ac.uk/2134/8418.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
This PhD thesis compared incidents of violence in two Malaysian hospitals and two English hospitals. Using a model of workplace violence, the aims of the thesis were to explore and compare six constructs: extrinsic, intrinsic, triggers, experiences, moderators, and consequences of workplace violence as perceived by Malaysian and English hospital staff. This study used data on experiences of violence gathered in 2005 for incidences in hospitals that occurred up to one year before the survey. The 2004 data from the Incident Report database (IRD) of the English hospitals was also used. Two instruments were developed for this thesis. First was the General Violence Victimization Questionnaire (GVQ), an instrument to identify the types, prevalence, nature, consequences, post-incident support, and reporting trends of violence in hospitals. The second instrument was the Violence Victimization Semi-structured Interview (VicQ) which explored factors leading to the violent incident, the violent incident itself, and psycho-social issues relating to the violent incident. Both instruments were translated into the Malay language for use in Malaysia. 227 people participated in the quantitative survey: 162 people from the Malaysian Government Hospitals (MGH) and 115 people from the National Health Service (NHS). A total of 25 people volunteered to be interviewed as part of the qualitative aspect of the study: 15 from the MGH and 10 from the NHS. Six categories of violence were compared: verbal, nonverbal, threat, physical, sexual, and psychologically-based. A total of 4118 violent incidents (1402 in MGH and 2716 in NHS) were reported. The most common type of violence was psychologically-based violence in the MGH and verbal violence in the NHS. Both samples perceived that the major source of workplace violence was from patients and involved one male perpetrator. There were differences between the two samples indicative of cultural differences. Of those interviewed, the Malaysian participants perceived that offenders were intrinsically motivated to offend. The English participants perceived that offenders had either intrinsic or extrinsic motivation for perpetuating violence. Differences were noted for substance abuse and customer relations as triggers of organisational violence. Comparisons of moderators were different for the two country samples. Comparisons of consequences were not significantly different. Comparisons across several demographic variables (gender, age, and occupational groupings) were not significant between the two country samples with regards to workplace violence victimisation. However, a comparison of length of service was found to be significant. The final path model differed from the original model of workplace violence. Additional findings include a difference between the established definition and participants‘ definition of workplace violence, a lack of anti-violence policies in Malaysian hospitals, under reporting, and unforeseen direct and direct relationships among the six constructs.

Vail, Teresa M. "Teachers' professional development experiences: Implications for teaching practice". Scholarly Commons, 2011. https://scholarlycommons.pacific.edu/uop_etds/28.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
The purpose of this study was to inquire into the ways in which participation in physical science professional development impacts science teachers' professional learning and ultimately their practice over time. This study strove to provide a greater understanding of teachers' processes as they engage in professional learning and make changes in their practice long after the requirements of the professional development have been met. The six respondents that participated in the inquiry were physical science educators who were teaching in four different high schools in Central California. The guiding research question was stated as: How does participation in physical science professional development impact teachers' professional learning and ultimately their practice? Three sub-questions were also explored: In what ways does physical science professional development impact teachers' pedagogical content knowledge over time? In what ways does physical science professional development impact teachers' curriculum decision-making processes over time? In what ways does physical science professional development support a teacher's professional learning over time? Collective case study methodology was used in order to acquire multiple perspectives on the processes of teachers' professional learning and how professional development experiences have impacted this process. From four cross-case analyses of interviews, classroom observations, and documents, six themes emerged elucidating the process of professional learning. The process of professional learning is "driven" by a constant desire to learn resulting in the participation in professional development experiences where bits-n-pieces of curriculum are incorporated into the teachers' practice supported by relationships and reflection. The pressure to conform to education policy tempers the entire process of professional learning. Lastly, the process of professional learning has produced teachers as leaders. Each aspect of the process of professional learning has been impacted by the respondents' participation in professional development. By engaging in the iterative process of professional learning described here, respondents are transforming their professional development experiences in order to learn from and about their practice over extended periods of time. As professional learners, the respondents act as change agents in their own practice, schools and learning communities. Based on the results, implications for practice and recommendations for further inquiry are also presented.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
The purpose of this qualitative, descriptive study was to obtain insight into how Grade 9 learners (average age of 15 years) in a secondary rural school conceptualise school violence. The study was framed by a social constructionism paradigm, focusing on the co-construction of knowledge and meanings by the researcher and participants through personal engagement. Bronfenbrenner‟s Bioecological Theory of Human Development, operationalised by the Process-Person-Context-Time Model, provided a theoretical grounding for the inquiry. An instrumental case study design was followed, whereby nine Grade 9 learners (4 boys and 5 girls) in a rural secondary school participating in an academic service learning project were conveniently selected as the unit of study. Qualitative data from a focus group and task-based activities were transcribed, whilst participant observations were documented in a research journal through photographs. Constructivist grounded theory principles guided the thematic analysis. Three primary themes emerged: Violence as behaviour; Violence as experience and Power and authority. Findings indicate that school violence was perpetuated by both peers and teachers, in physical and verbal forms. Corporal punishment continued to be a prevalent strategy for maintaining discipline and authority within the school. It was also evident in the findings that learners differentiated between acts of school violence and play-fighting according to the intentions and responses of those involved. Contradictory sentiments regarding the acceptability of school violence emerged. On the one hand participants wanted school violence to stop, describing it as hurtful. However, they also expressed views that when used by someone in authority for the purpose of discipline or protection, school violence was appropriate and acceptable. Therefore, the current study suggests that participants view school violence in a duplicitous role – used negatively to cause harm, but also positively to enforce order and protect. This study contributes to literature by providing youth-generated conceptualisations of school violence.

Rosenthal, Marina. "Close Quarters: College Women's Experiences of Campus Sexual Violence". Thesis, University of Oregon, 2019. http://hdl.handle.net/1794/24172.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
College women face high rates of sexual violence and rarely report their experiences to school officials. Even when victims do report, their cases infrequently result in the expulsion of their perpetrators. As such, many college women continue to attend school with their perpetrators in the months and years following their assaults. No academic research has explored the experiences of these women coexisting with the person who harmed them. Furthermore, previous research on how perpetrators behave after acts of violence suggests the possibility that individuals who commit sexual assault on campus may try influence their victims after the assault by denying the assault, attacking the victim verbally, and reversing the victim and offender roles (a pattern referred to as DARVO). The current study explores the experiences of 113 women who were sexually assaulted during college, with attention to the impact of any ongoing contact they had with their perpetrators after their assault. This study also examined participants’ responses to two different kinds of acquaintance rape vignettes which varied in victim resistance. The results of this dissertation suggest that most campus sexual victims do indeed experience some contact with their perpetrator after their assault and nearly half of victims who experience such contact see it as having a negative effect on their wellbeing. Although a relationship between perpetrator contact and student health outcomes (mental, physical, and academic) did not emerge as expected, participants’ written descriptions of seeing their perpetrators provide support for the theory that contact with perpetrators is detrimental to victims’ health. The effects of victims’ contact with perpetrators are evidently complex and warrant further exploration.

Abstract (sommario):
Historically, African American lesbians (AALs) experiencing intimate partner violence (IPV) have received little or no support from therapists due to stigmas concerning the same-sex relationships of AALs in particular, who have been racially marginalized. The purpose of this study was to explore the experiences, attitudes, and perceptions of therapists who provide counseling for AALs who have experienced IPV. The findings of this study may help to better understand the challenges, perceptions, and attitudes of therapists regarding their experiences in working with AALs in domestic violent relationships because existing research was limited on mental health therapists' perceptions of working with AALs who are experiencing IPV in their relationships. Attribution theory provided a framework through which to explore and describe this topic. A phenomenological research design was used to explore the perceptions and lived experiences of 10 mental health professionals who have worked with AALs in IPV relationships. Data collection, using semistructured continued until data saturation was attained. Moustakas' phenomenological steps for data analysis were used to identify 4 themes in the data: challenges, IPV, resources available, and outcomes. Understanding the attitudes and experiences of therapists working with AALs in abusive relationships may result in positive social change through increasing knowledge of the issues involved. This may result in improved counseling and other services to AALs.

Abstract (sommario):
The current study used secondary analysis of existing data to examine associations between bullying experiences, parental partner violence, and partner violence in young adulthood. We hypothesized that bullying in adolescence would be associated with witnessing parental IPV in adolescence and IPV in young adulthood. We believed that deficits in social information processing, particularly hostile attribution biases, would be associated with adolescent bullying. Lastly, we believed that decentering would act as a moderator, affecting the relationship between adolescent bullying and IPV in adulthood. We used correlational and moderation analyses to examine these hypotheses and found that relational bullying victimization was associated with witnessing parental IPV, and the frequency of bullying perpetration was associated with IPV perpetration in adulthood. We found that some aspects of bullying victimization were negatively associated with being unassertive, bullying perpetration was associated with hostile attribution biases, and the relationship between bullying and IPV was significant only at certain levels of decentering maturity.

Walker, Samantha. "De-culturalising honour and violence : exploring 'victims' experiences of 'honour'-based violence in rural England". Thesis, Keele University, 2018. http://eprints.keele.ac.uk/4590/.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Violence perpetrated in the name of ‘honour’ is neither a new phenomenon, nor one associated exclusively with any particular culture or religion. Nevertheless the concept of honour has become a powerful expression through which certain ‘culturalised’ forms of violence have been differentiated from ‘mainstream’ forms of violence against women. Indeed, while the latter is viewed generally as a pattern of individual deviance and desire for power and control, HBV is perceived as symptomatic of deviant and problematic cultures and cultural pathology. Subsequently although there has been increasing academic attention paid to the problem of ‘honour’-based violence within the UK, much of this existing research has focused on urban areas with large South Asian Muslim populations. Problematically, Larasi (2013b) argues, this limited focus can create silos that do not necessarily represent ‘victims’’ real lived experiences of violence and abuse. This thesis is based upon data collected from semi-structured interviews conducted with twenty-six participants – twelve service users and fourteen service providers – from various ‘rural’ locations spanning across five English counties. By re-examining the notion of ‘honour’, this thesis considers the extent to which the culturalisation of HBV has hindered contemporary Western understanding of VAW and our ability to provide services to those seeking help. Although, by drawing upon the lived experiences of service users, it is shown how honour and shame operate as more pervasive features of all intimate personal victimisation, this thesis demonstrates how culturalised perceptions of honour and HBV restricts service provisions – particularly in rural areas which are conceptualised as lacking in ethnic diversity. Ultimately this thesis argues that, given that honour underlies so many forms of gender-based violence, rather than resituating HBV within a broader framework of VAW, we should instead situate VAW within a broader theoretical understanding of honour and shame.

Schlebusch-Marie, Linda. "Workplace violence among professional nurses in a private healthcare facility". Thesis, Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/10948/12801.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Workplace violence is an international problem and has negative consequences for individuals, organizations and communities. For individuals, the effect includes symptoms of fear, stress, irritability, feelings of isolation, insecurity, and low selfesteem. Healthcare organizations incur increased cost due to litigation due to poor quality of care, high staff turnovers and absenteeism, and their brands are negatively affected. Community members, who are the recipients of care, are placed in danger and are indirectly the victims of such workplace violence, which in turn affects their trust in private healthcare organizations or professions to provide the quality health care that they expect and deserve. Workplace violence takes many forms such as incivility, horizontal violence and bullying to name but a few. The perpetrators of such violence are doctors, nurses, patients and relatives. Workplace violence takes place in South Africa however, paucity in research was found by the researcher. The aim of the study was to explore and describe the experiences of professional nurses regarding workplace violence in a private healthcare facility in order to develop guidelines to address workplace violence in such a facility. A qualitative, explorative, contextual and descriptive study was conducted, using the Critical Social Theory as the paradigm. Data were gathered from professional nurses that have experienced workplace violence utilizing narratives. Fourteen narrative interviews were done until data was saturated. The data was transcribed verbatim and Tesch’s method of thematic synthesis was used to analyse the data. The three themes that emerged from the data were: Professional nurses acknowledge the existence of workplace violence where they work, Participants described the effect of workplace violence on themselves, others and the work environment, and Participants discussed their views regarding management of violence in the workplace. A thick description of the data with a literature control was provided. Thereafter inferences were made regarding the main themes of the guidelines and these focussed on: Preventing and addressing workplace violence by Nursing Service Managers; Preventing and addressing workplace violence by Nurse Unit Managers and Empowering professional nurses to address workplace violence. To ensure rigour and trustworthiness of the study, the researcher used Lincoln and Guba’s criteria namely: credibility, dependability, conformability and transferability. To protect the right and dignity of the participants and to safeguard the integrity of the study the researcher complied with the following ethical principles: beneficence, non- maleficence, autonomy, justice, veracity, privacy, and confidentiality. The limitations of this study were that data was collected from only one category of nurses and only one private healthcare facility was used. Recommendations from this study include implementation of the guidelines to establish their effectiveness. The findings of this study can be used to empower professional nurses to deal with workplace violence and to prevent the short and long term effects of workplace violence on the individual, the organization and the community. Nursing education institutions can also incorporate workplace violence into their curriculum to increase the awareness of students regarding this phenomenon.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
The issue of psychotherapists' values in psychotherapy has become increasingly challenging as philosophers have questioned the viability of concepts such as objectivity and relativism. Historically, psychotherapists have relied on notions such as bracketing or suspending their own values to avoid the moral and ethical implications that such values might be active in psychotherapy. Acknowledging that psychotherapists' values are active in psychotherapy raises a host of important issues, including how to appropriately navigate value conflicts. This study explored the experience of psychotherapists as they navigate conflicts between their religious and professional values. Qualitative interviews with eight religiously committed psychologists were transcribed and analyzed using Collaborative Hermeneutic Interpretation. Major themes and findings include: the possibility that one can be a religiously committed psychologist; that research topics are informed by religious values; the strengthening of personal values through conflict; there are a variety of values gained from religious affiliation; feeling out of place in religious and professional communities; having religious and philosophical issues broadened and deepened in complexity; knowing when to defend values and worldview; having quality research and reputation as a defense; and positive and negative experiences with supervisors. Participants also discussed what was helpful in preparing them for value conflicts and the preparation they wished they would have received. The findings in this study emphasize the importance of the supervisory relationship and the impact that supervisors can have on trainees as they work through value conflicts. Training programs are also recommended to provide trainees guidance that will help prepare them to navigate potential value conflicts over the course of their professional development.

Project-based Language Learning (PBLL) provides students with opportunities to use the target language purposefully and to interact with culturally authentic materials. Because PBLL holds critical benefits for its students, it is important that teachers learn best practices for implementation and how to overcome the challenges that PBLL brings. This study focuses on the experiences of 15 world language teachers as they participated in a PBLL professional development series developed by the National Foreign Language Resource Center (NFLRC) at the University of Hawai'i at Mānoa. Findings from this study are based on data gathered from surveys and interviews with a diverse group of educators for the purpose of gaining an understanding of what participants learned and the activities that impacted learning of PBLL. Results show that learning about gold standard elements of PBLL made the biggest impact on participants' pedagogical beliefs and motivated them to change their practice. Activities that positively impacted learning were those that were active, social, and related to practice. Participants were overwhelmed with the amount of content and needed help making connections between the content and their teaching contexts. Overall, participants' experiences in the professional development series led to a change in pedagogical beliefs and a desire to alter their implementation of PBLL.

Abstract (sommario):
Gender diverse individuals experience stigma, discrimination, and transprejudice regularly, in response to daily interactions with society. These negative experiences lead to the development of physical, mental, and emotional instability. Gender diverse individuals experience transprejudice and discriminatory experiences in transpohobic counseling environments. Furthermore, current research highlights the need for counselors to increase training and knowledge to work with gender diverse individuals. The purpose of this hermeneutic phenomenological study, grounded in a Heideggerian philosophy, was to illuminate the lived experiences of professional counselors engaging in counseling with gender diverse clients and bridge the gap in the current literature. Data were collected from 7 licensed professional counselors with experience counseling gender diverse clients. using a semistructured interview and followed a structured thematic analysis process incorporating components of interpretive phenomenological analysis, ensuring thematic saturation. The results of this study highlighted 10 major themes and seven subthemes inclusive, but not limited to education and training, understanding gender diversity issues, intentional bias, and professional experience. These study findings provide insight regarding the potential to improve counselor training and preparation. Ultimately increasing knowledge and education may impact and improve the lives for the gender diverse clients by reducing transprejudice, transphobia, and other forms of bias.

Abstract (sommario):
Many researchers have concluded that teachers' frustration with the lack of quality teacher professional development can be addressed by acknowledging teachers' voices and involving them in the planning and design of their professional development. The purpose of this basic qualitative study was to explore 3rd through 5th grade elementary teachers' experiences with professional development in their schools or in their district in Southern California. Hargreaves and Fullan's concept of professional capital and Shulman's construct of knowledge growth in teaching provided the conceptual framework for this study. The research questions that framed the interview protocol for this study focused on teachers' experiences and ideas for professional development. Open coding of interviews with 8 teachers determined common words, phrases, or sentences and constant comparison determined emergent themes. Findings that emerged were that district professional development lacked continuity and was experienced as overwhelming, ineffective, inadequate, and often insufficient. Teachers perceived that their needs were seldom met and their involvement in the planning and design of professional development was limited. The elementary teachers desire reflective processing time to become masters of their craft, as well as active involvement in planning and designing their professional development. This study may contribute to positive social change by providing insight to professional development designers that teachers desire involvement in planning training with more engagement and higher levels of learning which can contribute to improved student outcomes. Collaboration such as that found in professional learning communities could accomplish this goal.

Hipp, Tracy N. "Sexual Minority Women's Experiences of Sexual Violence: A Phenomenological Inquiry". Digital Archive @ GSU, 2012. http://digitalarchive.gsu.edu/psych_theses/99.

Abstract (sommario):
Sexual minority women have been repeatedly overlooked in violence against women research. As a result, we know little about the experiences and needs of non-heterosexual or gender non-conforming survivors. Given the paucity of information available on this topic, this study was exploratory in nature and used a phenomenological approach. Open-ended, unstructured interviews focused on the lived experience of surviving sexual violence and the impact that this experience has had on the survivors’ same-sex sexuality. While a number of reoccurring themes generated from this project are well represented within the broad and well-developed canon of sexual violence research, participants also introduced features unique to LBQ and same-sex attracted women. Results from this project are intended to begin a long overdue dialogue about the needs of this understudied community of survivors.

Abstract (sommario):

This study qualitatively explores women survivors of intimate partner violence and their perceptions of experiences with social institutions when seeking support. Specifically, this study explored their experiences with a) social service organizations, b) health care providers, c) law enforcement, and d) the judicial system, examining the differences between ethnic minorities and the dominant culture. While individual themes for helpful and unhelpful practices for service providers were identified for each institution, across all social institutions, common helpful practices included being resourceful and using an empowerment approach. Services that were considered unhelpful or influenced disclosure of abuse included lack of knowledge and understanding of how to serve survivors of intimate partner violence, victim-blaming, the fear of children being taken away, immigration status, indifference, and difficulty obtaining services. African American women reported being treated unfairly and community distrust.

Abstract (sommario):
This research contributes to existing knowledge of intimate partner violence (IPV) by highlighting the lived experiences of female adolescent survivors through the examination of the lived experiences of seventeen participants. Framed within an intersectional feminist epistemology and informed by psychoanalytical theories, a hybrid of the Free Association Narrative Interview method (Hollway and Jefferson, 2001) and the Biographical Interview Method (Wengraf, 2002) was applied, allowing an in-depth analysis of the young women's adolescent experiences of IPV. The female participants' narratives highlighted significant levels of psychological, sexual and physical violence by various male partners, suggesting that gender is indeed a mediating factor. These experiences reflect Johnson's Typologies of Domestic Violence (2008). In addition, consideration of other intersecting factors, such as age, socioeconomic demographic information, familial exposure to IPV and previous IPV victimisation, highlighted the necessity to consider all factors when determining risk and experience (Potter, 2015). This research adds to the debate regarding gender symmetry of IPV perpetration and victimisation, with analysis of participants' experiences suggesting gender symmetry is not experienced by all adolescents, thus further exploration of this phenomenon is required. Similarly, participants experienced severe forms of physical, sexual and psychological violence at each stage of adolescence (early 10 to 13 years; middle 14 to 16 years; late adolescence and young adulthood 17 to 25 years) contradicting the oft held assumption that more severe violence occurs solely in adulthood. Analysis of participants' experiences of informal and formal support, and an exploration of participants' ideal prevention intervention model argues for a public health approach to preventing AIPV, with resources focused on primary, secondary and tertiary prevention. Ultimately the young women felt that with appropriate education, support and intervention they could have avoided, or at least reduced, their exposure to abuse. Hence in order to reduce and/or prevent adolescents from experiencing IPV resources should be aimed at giving young people the information, skills and abilities to resist gendered inequalities and unhealthy relationship behaviours, and promote healthy and happy romantic and sexual relationships.

Flynn, Alison. "Experiences of shame, social rank and violence amongst male offenders". Thesis, University of East London, 2017. http://roar.uel.ac.uk/6406/.

Abstract (sommario):
Background: Theory associates shame with violence but research is inconsistent. The Compassion Focused Therapy shame concept distinguishes internal shame, other shame and social rank, offering a novel research approach. Adverse and traumatic experiences have been associated with violence in adulthood. Aims: This study aimed to distinguish between internal, other and social rank shame with the intention of introducing a relational and social understanding of shame and violence. Secondly, it aimed to explore developmental psychopathology theories of violence by profiling the central and traumatic features of male offenders’ shame memories. Method: Drawing on a pragmatist philosophy, this study adopted a cross sectional, quantitative approach. Male offenders (N = 121) in a young offenders prison were recruited via the healthcare suite. Participants were invited to complete a series of established self-report questionnaires via one to one interview. Two questionnaires required responses with reference to a strong shame memory. Results: Multiple regression analysis found proactive aggression was predicted by other shame, social rank and shame memory avoidance. Only other shame and participant age were independent predictors of proactive aggression. Reactive aggression was predicted by internal shame, other shame, shame memory avoidance and hyperarousal, however only age independently predicted reactive aggression. MANCOVA found no differences between groups with and without physical violence risk alerts in terms of shame when controlling for age. Structural Equation Modelling identified social rank and other shame as mediators of proactive aggression. Black and Asian/Other ethnic groups had significantly higher levels of social rank but not aggression. Conclusion: Although physically violent and nonviolent groups did not differ in terms of shame, different shame variables predicted proactive and reactive aggression in the whole population. The structural equation model is a novel analysis of proactive aggression. Ethnic differences in social rank are discussed in terms of BME overrepresentation in the criminal justice system.

Slabbert, Ilse. "The experiences of low-income female survivors of domestic violence". Thesis, Stellenbosch : University of Stellenbosch, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/10019.1/5233.

Abstract (sommario):
Thesis (PhD (Social Work))--University of Stellenbosch, 2010.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Domestic violence crosses all boundaries and is regarded as a universal challenge affecting women of all spheres of life. Domestic violence is seen as a serious social problem in South Africa. It is regarded by many researchers as a leading cause of female injury. Domestic violence can be described as an act by a member of a family against another member with intent to do physical injury, psychological or emotional harm, or an assault or a threat that reasonably places that member in fear of imminent physical injury or emotional harm. It has major consequences, not only for the abused woman, but also for her children and society at large. Many low-income women cannot escape their abusive circumstances due to a lack of resources. Despite the fact that they cannot leave their situation, many women display certain strengths, helping them to deal with their difficult situation. These women can be viewed as heroic, assertive and persistent. They are not victims, but active survivors. The social work profession could benefit from greater insight into the strengths and coping mechanisms of low-income female survivors of domestic violence. The goal of the study is to gain an understanding of low-income female survivors’ experience of domestic violence, focusing on their environmental resources (including family, friends and community) and on their coping mechanisms (inner resources/strengths). To achieve this goal, the objectives are: to present a theoretical overview of the nature and extent of domestic violence; to describe the environmental resources (such as family, friends and community) of low-income abused women from the ecological perspective; to explore the coping mechanisms (inner resources) of these women in terms of the principles of the strengths perspective; and to analyse and interpret the data obtained from the study. The research utilises an exploratory and descriptive design. The research question is, “What are the experience (environmental resources) and coping mechanisms (inner resources) of lowincome female survivors of domestic violence?” This question was addressed by means of qualitative research. Twenty participants took part in the study. Purposive and snowball sampling were used to select the participants. They were interviewed by the researcher, and the data obtained from the interviews were organised into themes. Five themes namely, the experience of domestic violence, low-income, resources, coping mechanisms and statutory intervention were identified. These themes were further divided into sub-themes and categories. Conclusions derived from the data included: domestic violence is a phenomenon that cuts across all racial, marital status or age boundaries; some low-income female survivors of domestic violence experience their situation as stressful; low-income is one of the determining factors preventing some abused women to leave their situation; resources play a significant part in the lives of some low-income abused women; certain strengths from some low-income battered women help them cope; and some abused low-income women do not find an Interim Protection Order (IPO) or the police to be helpful. The recommendations are that social workers should assess primary, secondary and tertiary intervention in dealing with domestic violence; the ecological and strengths perspectives combined would be helpful in assessing resources and coping mechanisms in low-income abused women and collaboration between social workers, the court and the police could help low-income abused women to use statutory services effectively.
