Reposant sur l’expérience uruguayenne (1985/2015), prenant en compte un contexte de mondialisation, notre thèse vise à problématiser, au prisme d’une philosophie politique critique, une citoyenneté nommée diasporique, déployée aux interstices des États-nation, émergeant au travers de processus migratoires, de l’exil et de l’interconnexion de communautés diasporiques.Sous l’éclairage des philosophies de la citoyenneté nous cartographions cette singulière citoyenneté se déployant en scénarios transnationaux et processus interactifs, dans lesquels interviennent différentes catégories d’acteurs.Ainsi, chacun, individuellement ou au sein de groupes d’appartenance, devient citoyen par des actes, des discours, des représentations, dans l’aspiration de trouver une place à part entière au sein d’une communauté politique, sans en devenir prisonnier. Sans nous contenter d’examiner les situations de déterritorialisation évoquées - exil, migration, diaspora-, notre intention est plutôt d’interroger les conditions que s’y trouvent associées dans l’émergence et le déploiement d’une citoyenneté diasporique.Nous conceptualisons dès lors quatre conditions majeures : subjectivité sensorielle et émotionnelle enracinement rhizomique ; réseautique en constellations versatiles ; subjectivation politique mise à l’épreuve par une impossible émancipation. Les logiques auxquelles l’expérience citoyenne diasporique uruguayenne se rattache nous conduisent à poser enfin que la citoyenneté n’est pas prisonnière des institutions.Elle peut s’inventer au sein d’une communauté politique, qu’elle s’exprime en activisme citoyen ou en citoyenneté ordinaire<br>Based on the Uruguayan diasporic experience (1985/2015), and taking into account the context of globalization, our thesis aims at problematizing, at the prism of a critical political philosophy, a citizenship called "diasporic", deployed at interstices of Nation-States, emerging through international migratory processes, political exile, and the interconnections of the diaspora communities. In the light of philosophies of citizenship, we map out a diasporic citizenry deployed in transnational situations and interactive processes, in which different categories of participants have a hand in intervening. Thus, each - individually or within the groups to which they belong - through acts, speeches and representations becomes Citizen; aspiring to find a complete place in a political community without becoming captive to it. Without being content to limit ourselves to examining the aforementioned situations of deterritorialization - exile, migration, diaspora - our intention is rather to identify the conditions associated with them in the emergence and deployment of diasporic citizenship. We conceptualize on these bases four major conditions, which we call: sensorial and emotional subjectivity; rhizomic integration; networking in versatile forms; political subjectivity put to the test by an "impossible" emancipation. The logical reasonings to which the experience of the Uruguayan diasporic citizen are connected to lead us finally to assume that citizenship is not beholden to institutions. It can invent itself within the bosom of a political community; express itself as citizen activism or ordinary citizenship

This thesis examines exile in contemporary autobiographical narratives written in French by women from across the Francophone world. The analysis focuses on work by Nina Bouraoui (Algeria), Gisele Pineau (Guadeloupe), Veronique Tadjo (Cote d'Ivoire), and Kim Lefevre (Vietnam), and investigates how the French colonial project has shaped female articulations of mobility and identity in the present. This comparative, cross-cultural, and cross-generational study engages with postcolonial theory, gender theory, and autobiographical theory in order to create a new framework with which to interpret women's experiences and expressions of displacement across the Francosphere. The thesis posits that existing models of exile do not fully explain the complex situations of the four authors, who do not have a well-defined 'home' and 'host' country. Although marginalised by their gender, they are economically privileged and have chosen to live a rootless existence, which nonetheless renders them alienated and 'out of place'. The thesis thus argues that women's narratives of exile challenge and complicate existing paradigms of exile which have a male, patriarchal focus. By turning our attention to these women and their specific postcolonial gendered narratives, a more nuanced understanding of exile emerges: exile is experienced as a sexual, gendered, racial, and/or linguistic otherness.

The attempt to come to terms with the meaning of home, both literally and metaphorically, has become a major concern in literary studies. This dissertation explores the various novelistic representations of home from the point of view of Arab migrant novelists. Home, which contains various references to architectural structures, nations, states, or belonging, can no longer be thought of as a generalized or unified experience. For the migrant writer, the concept of home takes shape as a result of interaction between the past and the present, with memory playing a powerful role. It is created as a result of various forces in tension that include personal and national experiences, the context within which migration from the traditional home place occurred, ideological allegiances and identity politics. I argue through my exploration of a number of novels written by Arab writers who migrated from their home countries that the concept of home can no longer be referred to as a generalized, definite or a fixed notion. Given the different circumstances of the movement from one country to another, even among nationals of the same country, what are the themes that will be stressed in an Arab writer’s imagination and portrayal of home? Will writers stress the exclusions of exile, and define their presence away from the original country clearly as ‘exile’, fixating on painful nostalgia? How does memory influence the perception of home? Will those writers who have lived a long time in a new ‘foreign’ country emphasize the adaptations in the diaspora and the privileges of migration? Will they offer critiques of the national project, making a clear distinction between the personal home and the national project? Will such boundaries be as clearly defined for all the writers? Those questions guide my investigation into the representation of home in the novels of Palestinian, Lebanese and Iraqi writers living away from their three countries of origin. This investigation takes place within the postcolonial theoretical framework of the implications of the site of migration about the revision of the centrality of the nation as a referent of identity. The analysis uncovers a variety of illustrations in the imagination of home and the portrayal of the national experience in the novels. The analysis also highlights the inextricable link between the personal experience and the political experience, whereby the ideological stance on issues of nation and nationalism cannot be easily isolated in an assessment of the cultural product at the site of migration.

My dissertation discusses refugee rights and post-repatriation integration in South Asia in the context of debates over "citizenship." Postcolonial state-formation processes in South Asia have profoundly shaped questions of belonging and membership. As a result, official citizenship has become an important marker of group inclusion and exclusion in South Asian states. Using the literature on citizenship, I discuss the "belonging" claims of non-citizens (refugees) and argue that in practice this "belonging" extends beyond the state-centric "citizenship" view of membership. In doing so, I address two sets of interrelated questions: what factors determine whether or not refugees will be repatriated in South Asia, and why do some repatriated groups re-integrate more successfully than others in "post-peace" South Asian states? I answer these questions through a study of refugees from Sri Lanka and Bangladesh who sought asylum in India and were later repatriated to their countries of origin. The politics of postcolonial state-formation and subsequent discriminatory policies on language in Sri Lanka and non-recognition of the Jumma people in Bangladesh encouraged many citizens to flee to India as refugees. I argue, first, that India's state-centric politics of non-recognition of the two refugee groups contributed to their later repatriation. In the absence of rights and status in exile, refugees turned to "home" as a place to belong. I then analyze the post-repatriation variations in accommodation in Sri Lanka and Bangladesh as most refugees attempted to reclaim the lost identity and "citizenship" at "home" through the process of repatriation. However these countries pursued strategies of limited accommodation, which led to the minimal or partial re-integration of the two returnee-refugee groups.

Thesis advisor: Sarah Babb<br>Thesis advisor: Lisa Dodson<br>Through a qualitative thematic analysis of sixty-four semi structured interviews, this thesis focuses on the situation facing Burmese forced migrants in Thailand. In particular, I look at the ways in which forced migrants, their host government, and humanitarian actors negotiate the meaning of refugee status and what it means to be in a protracted space of transition. Findings for this study point to the ways in which the policies and norms of the Royal Thai Government and the offices of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees inadvertently interconnect to complicate the space for refugee protection. The paper also finds that refugee status can be gained or lost through interactions between asylum seekers and various parties on the Thai Burma border. Certain actors within the refugee community and among local and humanitarian authorities play the role of gatekeepers, granting access to a variety of services and protection at a cost and excluding those who cannot pay the cost. More than 400 Polish medical refugees were associated with the Polish School of Medicine (PSM) at the University of Edinburgh between 1941 and 1949. This dissertation argues that the history of the PSM can fully be understood only as a part of the refugees’ broader experience of impelled or forced migration during and immediately after the Second World War. The key findings of this case study demonstrate that the opportunity to study or work at the PSM enabled the majority of Polish exiles to overcome, to a varying extent, their refugee predicament, while medical qualifications, transferable skills and trans-cultural competency obtained in wartime Britain allowed them to pursue professional and academic careers in different countries of post-war settlement, thus in turn contributing to a global circulation of medical knowledge and practice, especially between the University of Edinburgh and Poland. This specific case study contributes to the existing knowledge of Polish wartime migration to Britain in three interrelated ways. Firstly, an overarching transnational approach is used to combine and transcend Polish and British scholarly perspectives on, respectively, emigration or immigration. Secondly, the conceptual insularity of the existing literature on the topic is challenged by analysing archival, published and digital sources pertaining to the PSM with the help of various theoretical models and concepts borrowed from forced migration and diaspora studies. Thirdly, the conventional historiography of Polish-British wartime relations is challenged by emphasising the genuinely global ramifications of the PSM’s history. By interpreting the history of the PSM with the help of different analytical tools, such as Kunz’s and Johansson’s models of refugee movement and Tweed’s theory of diasporic religion, this dissertation provides a conceptual blueprint for further research on Polish wartime migration to Britain. In turn, this case study contributes to the development of forced migration and diaspora studies not only by empirically testing the explanatory power of existing theoretical models, but also by suggesting possible new conceptual avenues, such as analysing the pre-existing trans-cultural experiences of both Polish medical refugees and their hosts at the University of Edinburgh, and adding to the ‘triadic relationship’ of diaspora, homeland and host society a fourth dimension, i.e. conflict and cooperation between different migrant or refugee communities within the same host society.

Benslama), ou encore manifestent un effondrement psychique au moment de l'annonce d'un accord d'asile politique ? La proposition qui est faite est que ces faits cliniques relèvent « d'une clinique de l'identité » et s'adressent inconsciemment à la représentation de soi. Penser l'identité dans l'exil conduit à faire l'hypothèse que l'accès à soi est indexé à l'expérience de l'altérité. Benslama), and how can we understand that some of them go through psychic collapse at the moment of the announcement of an agreement for political asylum?The hypothesis that I make is that these clinical facts can be understood as a "clinic of identity". The purpose to think identity through exile lead us to the hypothesis that the access of self-representation is built on the experience of otherness. This is why the exile can be interpreted (as a psychical experience) as an alteration of the relationship with the Other, which means as an alteration of self-representation.This implies to make the hypothesis that there is, inside of the question of exile, an unconscious phantasy of treason, and that this phantasy is related with the identity, and that this phantasy is based over the unspeakable fear of being forgotten.The clinical care will then be understood as an "identity work", which means as a work of recognition of the singularity of the event that the subject goes through, so that the patient would be able to restart the dialogue with himself. Depuis 2011, environ 5,6 millions de personnes ont dû quitter le territoire de la Syrie. Elles ont cherché refuge dans plusieurs pays, notamment la Turquie et la Jordanie. Cette thèse analyse, dans le contexte de l’exil urbain en Turquie et en Jordanie, les stratégies de survie des Syriens, qui sont traversées par des rapports de race, classe et genre. Cette étude a pour objectif de s’interroger sur les manières dont les réfugiés surpassent les contraintes et catégorisations qu’un milieu contraignant leur impute. En partant des questionnements sur les politiques migratoires, nous montrerons comment le statut réducteur et passif accordé aux réfugiés est limité et rend problématique une réelle compréhension des rapports de vie dans l’exil. L’idée est d’aller au-delà de la vulnérabilité des réfugiés, sans négliger les violences qu’ils subissent dans la terre de refuge. Afin d’analyser ce processus, l’étude s’appuie sur une série d’entretiens semi-directifs avec les Syriens en Turquie et en Jordanie. Cette méthodologie se complète par ailleurs par l’observation anthropologique/ethnologique de ces espaces : notamment accompagner le travail des ONG internationales et locales ; observer les espaces de socialisations ; participer à des débats et conversations autour d’un thé ordinaire<br>Since 2011, 5.6 million people have fled Syria due to ongoing conflict. The vast majority sought refuge in neighbouring Turkey and Jordan. This thesis analyses, within the context of urban exile in Turkey and Jordan, the different experiences and survival strategies of Syrians who are modulated by particular relations of race, class and gender. It aims to explain how refugees manage to create their own visibility in this new space full of limitations, and further explores how their newfound participation in these urban areas can deconstruct dominant representations of refugees, who are otherwise seen as threats or as voiceless victims. In all, this research, that focuses on the agency of Syrians, aims to go beyond the vulnerability of refugees, without neglecting the violence they endure. In order to analyse this process, this study is based on a series of semi-structured interviews with Syrians, local communities in Turkey and Jordan. The interviews were conducted in several cities, with different profiles in 2016 and 2017. This methodology is complemented with a more anthropological / ethnological approach

Notre travail de thèse se propose d’interroger la production littéraire des écrivains d’origine judéo-maghrébine en France en tant que littérature d’exil, dans la période de la décolonisation. La démarche, se basant sur une étude prosopographique, porte dans un premier temps sur les contextes favorables et pertinents à l’action d’une série d’individus, autrement dit sur l’état des conditions de la production d’une littérature née d’un déplacement. S’en suit une classification d’écrivains rendue possible par la mise en relation des caractéristiques sociologiques et des dispositions propres à cette génération d’auteurs avec les cadres culturels, historiques et cognitifs qui sont les leurs. En s’appuyant sur des entretiens semi-directifs avec des écrivains sélectionnés selon la typologie dégagée de l’étude précédente ainsi que sur l’étude de leurs œuvres littéraires, la recherche s’attache, dans un second temps, à vérifier si cette écriture « minoritaire » peut nous renseigner, et jusqu’à quel point, sur les relations qu’entretiennent entre elles histoire, mémoire, littérature et identité dans le contexte migratoire. Enfin, dans cette perspective, ses usages sociaux et ses fonctions sont étudiés à travers l’analyse des mécanismes et des thèmes récurrents de cette production littéraire, qui se construit comme le témoignage singulier d’un moment de vécu historique et ce faisant, nourrit notre compréhension des processus d’ajustements littéraires<br>My dissertation research is focused on the literary production written by authors of North-African Jewish origin. Meaning a literature in exile, in the post-colonial era. My approach includes a prosopographical study, exploring the conditions and the social context that favorized this literature’s creation. The study proposes a classification of a number of authors, linking the sociological characteristics and particular attributes of this generation of writers with their cultural, historical, and cognitive backgrounds. The method uses semi-directive interviews with these subjects, as well as the study of their works, to see whether this “minority” literature can enlighten, and if so to what extent, about the interaction between history, memory, literature, and identity. In this perspective, the social usages and functions of this literature are examined, driving to the analysis of mechanisms and recurring themes that appear as the singular testimony of a moment of lived history. In doing so, it helps us to understand adjustment through literature

This thesis uses the evidence for a wide range of phenomena relating to the exile of citizens, by judicial decision or through stasis, to investigate the political cultures of Greek poleis in the period c. 404-146 BC: the fundamental ideas about citizenship which were in circulation in poleis in that period. Political communication in the context of exile phenomena forced citizens to make explicit their fundamental assumptions about the criteria for civic inclusion and exclusion and about the extent and basis of civic obligation. Analysis of surviving evidence for that communication thus offers unique insights into prominent Greek ideas about citizenship. This method is applied, in chapters 1 and 2, to laws and discussions relating to, first, lawful expulsion and exclusion and, second, civic reconciliation and the reintegration of exiles; and, in chapters 3 and 4, to the political rhetoric, organisation and ideas of participants in exclusionary stasis and of exiled citizens. Wherever possible, ancient Greek philosophers’ arguments, rhetoric and assumptions are compared with those of non-philosophers. Study of the four different bodies of evidence suggests that most poleis’ political cultures were distinguished by their extremes, paradoxes, indeterminacies and contradictions. In particular, many poleis’ political cultures included very significant, radical norms of civic voluntarism, encouraging citizens to exercise extensive voluntary initiative in political contexts. Moreover, most poleis political cultures were dominated by two coexisting, radically opposed basic paradigms of the good polis and of good citizenship: these are defined in the introduction and chapter 1 as a ‘unitarian teleological communitarian’ paradigm and a ‘libertarian contractarian’ paradigm. In addition to revealing fundamental ideas of citizenship, some of the exile evidence enables study of the effects of those ideas in practice in this period: citizens’ political choices, claims and behaviour in relevant periods of stress, such as a bout of exclusionary stasis or a spell of political agitation while in exile, represent a well-defined and revealing case-study of the multiple, competing effects of those ideas on political interaction. It is argued that the exile evidence suggests that the same fundamental ideas of citizenship were conducive both to civic stability and flourishing and to destructive civic unrest.

Autant les sciences sociales se sont attachées à comprendre la migration sous toutes ses formes depuis longtemps, autant la psychologie « de la migration » n’en est qu’à ses débuts. Elle s’est, pour l’heure, surtout intéressée aux difficultés rencontrées par les immigrés, mais peu à l’émigré.Il est donc question dans ce travail de tenter de mettre à jour les processus psychiques, et dynamiques préalables au départ. Pour ce faire, j’ai choisi de me mettre également en situation de migration pendant le travail de la recherche, pour rencontrer, accompagner et prendre en charge des candidats aux départs, et des migrants en situation de transit. S’est révélé, au cours de ce travail, la complexité due aux emboitements des différents espaces de réalités auxquelles chaque sujet a à faire. Malgré tout, il est possible de dire que les processus migratoires se mettent en place à partir de contextes tyranniques (familiaux, sociaux) au sein desquels l'emprise et la violence sont au cœur du lien. Le prétexte économique, souvent mis au premier plan, vient symboliser la dualité dette / réparation de la dette, et semble consécutif au fantasme de meurtre qui agite le groupe familial. La migration manifeste une forme de libido d'expression épistémophilique. This is why I deliberately became a migrant during the whole research: I encountered, accompanied and took in charge prospective and transit migrants.My work enlightened on the complexity due to the diverse and intricate spaces of realities each subject has to deal with.However, migratory processes can be described as induced by oppressive contexts (in family or society) where control and violence are at the core of the bond. Economic motives are often put forward: they symbolize the duality of debt and reparation, and seem to be resulting from the murder fantasy in the family group.Migration denotes a form of libido and of epistemophilic drive. The purpose of this thesis is to examine dynamics and consequences of geographical return movements in two North-South contexts based on migrants' biographies. The thesis examines the consequences of return migration in terms of social mobility, meanings of return and the shaping of identity-place relationships for the subjects of migration. Categories of return were identified and related to evolving migration processes in the two case studies of long term labour migration and political exile respectively. The concept of 'narrative identity' was used to analyse the shaping of the migration biographies and to examine the ways migrants made sense of their experiences of emigration/exile and return. In a further step the narrative identities were discussed in relation to examples of public narratives in the two contexts. The dissertation's case study of US-Mexican migration showed that geographical return took different shapes at the local level as the migration process evolved between the studied municipality in Mexico and different destinations in the USA. The initial phase of formative return led to the gradual establishment of a migration tradition and development of a remittance economy. Return movements turned in a later phase into an increasingly trapped migratory pattern of differentiated circulation between the municipality in Mexico and different locations in the USA. The 'narrative identities' of returning migrants were related to family situations (family formation, safety of the family, family commitment), perceptions of real life in Mexico and work identities (respected worker, independent businessman), negative experiences of migration (threat, social degradation, trapped migration), and the search and fulfilment of personal experiences. These narrative identities were contrasted with public narratives, showing the partial incorporation of some public narratives and contrasting senses of self of migrants in relation to 'imposed identities' in both the USA and Mexico. The second case study of the dissertation identified categories of return movements in a context of changing conditions in both Chile and Sweden. Examples of categories were 'conditional return' and 'programmed return' and in the phase of desexilio professional circulation, continued exile and everyday life circulation. The narrative identities of retornados were related to family situations (children's future and education, the extended family and the family vote), Sweden as 'parenthesis' (programmed return, duty to return, political return, personal return), work identities (independent businessman, professional circulation) and experiences of exclusion (foreigner, immigrant, prolonged political exile). Transnational advocacy groups carry out strategies that overcome the national boundaries both in global conflicts and local demands. The transnational advocacy organizations of Argentines living in Rome and Barcelona work in this strategic framework. This thesis presents the results of an ethnographical work situated in Rome, Barcelona and Buenos Aires. We studied the advocacy action of argentine organizations in Rome and Barcelona supporting the demands of social movements in the country of origin. Here we examine the relations network generated by their “transnational social fields” and analyze the (re)production of identity in the receiving societies as a result of an interaction between political meanings and exile/migrant status.

This dissertation contributes to post-war public opinion research by examining the perceptions of migrants – the gastarbeiter, the refugee, the family reunited after war – and the local population in comparative perspective. Existing surveys of post-war populations are typically conducted in a single country affected by war. However, particularly following forced expulsion and campaigns of ethnic cleansing substantial portions of national communities affected by conflict no longer live within the boundaries of the state. Current research may therefore overlook important populations as well as contextual factors that shape post-war attitudes. I help to address this problem by examining three widely held assumptions in the literature: that migrants hold more conflictive attitudes than the local population after war; that assimilation in settlement countries leads migrants to hold more peaceful attitudes; and that traumatic experiences lead migrants to hold more conflictive attitudes. These claims are largely based on theoretical accounts, case studies that suffer from selection bias and quantitative results that have proven unstable. By contrast, I examine new micro-level data: two large-scale surveys conducted simultaneously in post-war Bosnia and Sweden as a settlement country. Sweden’s choice to grant permanent residency in toto to refugees from the Bosnian War in 1993 resulted in the vast majority remaining settled in Sweden. As a result, the population of ex-Yugoslavs in Sweden is arguably more representative than in other comparable settlement country contexts. To explain differences among ex-Yugoslavs in Sweden and between these migrants and the local population in Bosnia, I connect social-psychological processes that help meet individuals’ basic psychological needs. These include: belief formation in the context of war; acculturation strategies in settlement countries; the development of nostalgic memories; and coping with traumatic experiences. The findings shed light on largely misunderstood processes. Under certain conditions, migration may provide an exit from detrimental wartime and post-war settings that produce and sustain conflictive societal beliefs after war. At the same time, the migration context may provide a richer set of socioeconomic and psychological resources for coping, offsetting the need to rely on conflictive beliefs as a way of dealing with the conflict crisis.

Néanmoins, avant 1939, un nombre réduit de citoyens polonais réside en Grande-Bretagne. En mai 1940, la chute de la France, terre d’accueil provisoire, précipite l’arrivée de soldats polonais et du Gouvernement en exil de Pologne. Ever since the 1830s, every decade has seen Poles finding a patriotic or economic refuge in Great-Britain, temporarily or permanently. Cependant, selon leurs différentes appartenances sociales, les expériences vécues ne sont pas identiques. The political aspects of this exile have been extensively addressed with the figure of the refugee generally perceived as masculine-neutral. Consequently, the involvement of Chilean women in collective action, their entry into the labour market or their participation in the migratory process are often ignored.The Chilean women in exile went through experiences specific to their gender. However, these experiences differed depending on their various social affiliations. This doctoral work endeavours to analyse these women’s familial, professional, and militant paths from their situation in Chile to their arrival in France, expounding both the subjective level of their personal experiences and perceptions and the objective level of the context and various social relations at play. Que ce soit dans les camps ou dans les périphéries des grandes villes en Afrique ou en Europe, que certains ont qualifié de « non-lieux », ils sont souvent présentés comme étant au « bord du monde ». Sans nier ces réalités, il convient toutefois de relativiser ce tableau, en montrant que les réfugiés savent mobiliser des ressources qui leur permettent non seulement de surmonter les aléas de l’exil, mais aussi de produire du lien social par rapport aux situations qui se présentent à eux. Prenant à contre-pied les allégations sur le manque de liens sociaux des réfugiés, ce travail s’attache donc à examiner comment, à partir des modalités positives ou négatives, les réfugiés congolais construisent du lien social non seulement entre eux, mais aussi avec les autochtones et les institutions étatiques et internationales, à Libreville, au Gabon. Il s’agit, dans une perspective interactionniste, de saisir la structure globale du lien qui les unit. Deux schèmes organisent les rapports des trois catégories d’acteurs. Whether in camps or in the outskirts of major cities in Africa and Europe, which some have called "non-places", they are often presented as the "edge of the world." Without denying these realities, it should however put this table, showing that refugees know mobilize resources that enable them not only to overcome the vagaries of exile, but also to build social ties in relation to the situations that arise to them. Taking up against the allegations about the lack of social ties refugees, this work therefore seeks to examine how, from how positive or negative, Congolese refugees build social ties not only among themselves but also with indigenous and state and international institutions, in Libreville, Gabon. It is in an interactional perspective, with contributions from fields such as history, sociology, psychology and political science, to understand the overall structure of the bond that unites them. The twentieth century has been called the century of the refugee. The sheer size, scope and persistence of refugee movements was a defining feature of that century because at no other time in history have people so regularly been forced to flee their homes in search of safety. The plight of refugees - both in their flight from home and in their search for a place of exile - is suggestive of the power of ideas about identity in deciding who belongs and who is displaced, stateless and alien. This study explores the significance of these ideas about identity through a case study of the arrival, settlement and experiences of two groups of Spanish and central European refugee children in Britain between 1937 and 1945. It begins by tracing a discourse on Englishness that betrays a contemporary concern for the future survival of the English nation and goes on to investigate how these concerns shaped negotiations for the arrival of refugee children. The principal aim of these negotiations, it is argued, was to ensure the protection of English national identity. The specific form of protection required varied according to the specific group of children under discussion and was based on stereotypical representations of the two groups of children. These representations of the children inscribed them with identities, measured them against the qualities of Englishness and justified the intervention of government in order to guarantee the continued health, peace and prosperity of England. For the Spanish/Basque children the government priority was to protect national health and the political stability of national life. For the Jewish children the aim of government policy was not to stimulate anti-Semitism by exceeding the national 'absorptive capacity'. The resulting carefully controlled settlement of the children, drawn up with various refugee agencies and covering housing, health and education, is analysed in detail throughout this study. In this study attention is also given to the role that the children's cultural and educational capital played in their adaptation to exile. It analyses how children were able to adapt to their experiences in exile by drawing on their own cultural and educational agency. In doing so it questions accounts of migration that focus on assimilation and explores instead the hybrid identities that were developed by refugee children who became adept at negotiating with the culture of Englishness.

projetadas na pós-modernidade, essas obras tematizam os deslocamentos pelos espaços
contemporâneos, apresentando personagens em trânsito que evidenciam crises existenciais,
identitárias e afetivas. Assim, essas narrativas de deslocamento colocam em voga as
concepções de identidades subjetivas e coletivas, reinscrevendo o tema do nacional,
engendrando problematizações a respeito das experiências de exílio e, ao mesmo tempo,
inscrevendo o olhar plural e dialógico que caracteriza as novas concepções identitárias em
formação. É sob tais perspectivas que procuramos elucidar e analisar as figurações dos
sujeitos migrantes que protagonizam tais narrativas, levando em consideração tanto a
elaboração dos espaços de migração, como de seus lugares de origem e discutindo a

Corresponding to the cultural, social and geopolitical changes projected in postmodernity,
these works discuss the displacement in contemporary spaces, presenting characters in transit
that show existential, identity and affective crises. Therefore, these narratives of displacement
put in vogue the conceptions of subjective and collective identities, reinscribing the theme of
the national, engendering problematizations about the experiences of exile and, at the same
time, inscribing the plural and dialogical look that characterizes the new identity conceptions
in formation. According to such perspectives, we seek to elucidate and analyze the figurations
of the migrant subjects that are staring in the narratives, considering both the elaboration of
the migration spaces and their places of origin and discussing the incidence or not of
possibilities of reterritorialization, to be drawn according to the specific social and political
context of each of the works

Cette recherche se consacre à un corpus de films biographiques réalisés par le cinéaste émigré allemand William Dieterle à Hollywood, entre 1936 et 1942. Il s’agit d’interroger les relations qui se sont nouées, à cette occasion, entre le fonctionnement des studios où travaillait le réalisateur, un contexte historique particulier marqué par les années qui précèdent l’entrée en guerre des États-Unis et le genre cinématographique biographique qui évolue pendant cette période. Parce que cette série de films intervient dans un contexte d’exil et de crises politiques, l’étude donne à voir la place centrale qu’y occupe la migration, ses médiateurs et ses réseaux d’émigrés. Elle met en relief les transferts culturels qui participent à la création d’une histoire occidentale de part et d’autre de l’espace atlantique. L’analyse iconographique, formelle et discursive de ces films met en lumière des processus d’hybridations culturelles produisant le syncrétisme des référents européens et américains, par lesquels un Paul Ehrlich ou une Florence Nightingale renaissent en héros et héroïnes progressistes et défenseurs de l’Amérique. C’est dans un face à face formel —regard-caméra— avec les spectateurs des années 1930-1940 que ces reconstitutions du passé défendent l’universalité et l’intemporalité des combats dont ils se veulent porteurs ; que le registre biographique ainsi redéfini sert de stratégie pour contourner les injonctions éditées par la censure et pour conjurer, par le biais du divertissement, l’affaiblissement de l’expression politique. La question centrale de cette recherche revient à interroger les interactions entre le cinéma et cette société, à examiner les relations qui se nouent entre des univers sociaux et la fabrique de ces films, autant pour le regard qu’ils portent sur les mutations de la période, que pour les modes d’intervention qu’ils constituent<br>This dissertation focuses on a corpus of biographical films, directed by German-born filmmaker William Dieterle in Hollywood between 1936 and 1942. It examines the multifaceted relationships between the Studio System in which the director worked, the growing feeling of danger in the period that led up to the United States’ entry into the war, and the genre of biographical pictures that developed at the time. Because this film cycle was produced in a historical context marked by exile and deep political crises, its analysis brings out the central role played by migration —and the intermediaries and networks it entailed— in the transatlantic cultural transfers that contributed to the development of Western narratives shared by both sides of the Atlantic. The iconographic, formal, and discursive analysis of these films highlights the processes of cultural hybridization that contributed to the syncretism of European and American referents, and through which Paul Ehrlich and Florence Nightingale are reborn as progressive heroes and defenders of America. It is through a formal face-to-face encounter with audiences of the 1930s and 1940s —by means of direct address to the camera— that these reenactments of the past plea for the universality and timelessness of the struggles they seek to convey ; the biographical mode is used in this encounter as a strategy to circumvent censorship and to ward off, via entertainment, the collapse of political expression. The primary goal of this dissertation is to question the interactions between cinema and society and to examine the relationships between social spheres and the making of these films, both for the films’ portrayals of societal transformations of the era and for the types of social and political intervention that they created

Au cours du XXème siècle, l'étude de la politique répressive en URSS a été menée sans utilisation des sources statistiques et des données des organismes internationaux. Ces documents étaient tenus strictement secrets et donc inaccessibles. Avec la chute du mur de Berlin en 1989 et l'effondrement de l'URSS en 1991, le monde se trouve complètement modifié. Ce processus engendre la division de certains états en Europe, la création de nouvelles zones de conflit et aussi la proclamation de l'indépendance de certains pays comme l'Azerbaïdjan en octobre 1991. Ces modifications politiques provoquent des mouvements de population. Essentiellement liée à la sécurité, surtout en raison du conflit arrnéno azerbaïdjanais qui a influencé l'économie, les hommes émigrent et s'installent dans les pays de la CEl, particulièrement en Russie et en Ukraine, mais aussi en Allemagne, en Israël, et ailleurs. Aujourd'hui, les raisons de l'émigration du peuple azerbaïdjanais sont différentes. Notre problématique propose d'étudier, de façon historique et sociologique, l'ensemble des courants migratoires azerbaïdjanais vers la France à l'époque contemporaine, c'est-à-dire de la fin du XIXème siècle. au début du XXIème siècle. Cette question est éclairée par l'étude de mouvements migratoires des pays voisins. L'exemple azerbaïdjanais regroupe différents types d'immigration, c'est pourquoi il nous a paru pertinent et judicieux de l'analyser pour comprendre les enjeux actuels des mouvements de population. De plus, l'étude des flux migratoires azerbaïdjanais est intéressant de par ses caractéristiques culturelles, politiques et surtout économiques et permet d'accéder à une meilleure intelligibilité de nos sociétés.

This PhD adopts an oral history approach to explore the importance of the Ethiopian coffee Buna ceremony in the lives of the participant Ethiopian forced miwants living in exile in London, UK. A primary objective was to place the personal oral testimonies and narratives within a rigorous research and ethical framework allowing the voice of the individual and community to be central to the process and recording the stories, histories and experiences of this much under-represented group within the field of migration and refugee studies. A central aim was to deepen our understanding of the significance of cultural traditions and rituals in the construction of identity, and to obtain a unique insight into the Ethiopian passion for the ritual 'Buna' ceremony as indicated by the fact that it remains a significant practice in exile. One of the key objectives was to explore how issues of gender, age, identity and well-being are maintained, transformed and challenged in exile within the context of re-settlement and more specifically in relation to the impact of the Buna ceremony on this complex, dynamic and challenging process. Finally, this research aims to explore the mental well-being issues facing the Ethiopian community in the UK and will focus on the use of the cultural Buna ritual as a means of alleviating some of the difficulties and challenges experienced by the participants in their attempts to settle and adapt to life in the UK. This study prioritises the complex and often-neglected issues of well-being and mental health within the Ethiopian community in exile and will contribute to the limited research on the experience of Ethiopian forced migrants in the UK.

Les migrations irrégulières vers et depuis l'Algérie constituent un élément important des systèmes migratoires africain et eurafricain. Les exilés subsahariens et algériens représentent un enjeu non-négligeable des politiques intérieure et extérieure de l'Algérie. Victimes de la répression, de l'exploitation et de conditions de vie difficiles, les exilés n'en sont pas moins acteurs de leur existence par le biais de stratégies de contournement des frontières, de pratiques solidaires et par la formation de nouvelles formes d'appartenances. Ce travail analyse la dialectique subtile entre les exilés et les structures politiques, juridiques et économiques dans lesquelles ils évoluent. La réification de l'exil comme expérience vécue repose sur des images politiques des exilés, sur la prédation dont ils sont les victimes ou sur la dérogation arbitraire au principe de l'asile politique. Mais, elle se poursuit dans la production de l'injustice et la réification des exilés et de leur corps au sein des communautés migrantes ou dans leur rapport aux institutions. Au-delà des catégories juridiques ou sociologiques classiques, la notion d'exil rend compte de l'expérience vécue par les individus dans un monde qui leur refuse tout statut, en premier lieu dans leur pays d'origine. Contre la réification des exilés, la lutte prend diverses formes de la solidarité communautaire à la mobilisation des migrants. Dans une perspective critique, nous défendrons l'hypothèse que la réification de l'exil et des exilés n'empêche pas la formation d'identités politiques revendicatrices<br>Irregular migrations towards and from Algeria are an important phenomenon of the African and Euro-African migration systems. Subsaharans and Algerians exiled represent an undeniable stake in the Algerian domestic and foreign policies. Exiled are vicims of repression, exploitation and of hard living conditions; but, they also are actors of their lives thanks to shunning strategies of borders, a strong solidarity and thanks to the formation of new forms of belonging. This work analyses the subtle dialectics between exiled and political, judicial and economic structures which frame their actions. The reification of exile as a lived experience lays on political images of the exiled, on the predation their victims of, and on the arbitrary derogation to the principle of political asylum. But, this process ends in the reification of the exiled and their bodies, inside the migrant communities or in their relation to the institutions. Beyond the judicial or sociological traditional categories, the notion of exile offer an insight into the lived experience of the individuals in a world that denies them any sort of recognised status, which is all the more true in their country of origin. Against the reification of the exiIed, the struggle takes different forms from the communal solidarity to sociopolitical mobilisation. In a critical perspective, we defend the hypothesis that the reification of exile and of the exiled does not prevent the development of political protesting identities

This study shares the stories of ten Iraqi refugees and exiles who experienced war in Iraq and migrated to Jordan. Through the methodology of narrative inquiry, this study gives voice to their stories of adversity and loss. It investigates the meaning they make of their experiences and how that helped them cope and adapt. Using thematic analysis, themes were highlighted within each narrative. Then, three common themes were identified amongst all ten narratives: 1) the role of religious beliefs and their linguistic expressions in coping, 2) the inner strength gained from experiencing war and from identification with the Iraqi nationality, and 3) the search for a purpose and the desire to make a contribution. This research contributes to the field of counselling psychology by providing rich and detailed contextual understanding of the ways in which Iraqis coped with their war and migration experiences. This study also examines the role of the researcher, as well as the limitations of the research, future research suggestions, and the implications for counselling psychology.

Die Volksrepublik Polen befand sich Ende der 1960er Jahre in einer wirtschaftlichen und innenpolitischen Krise. Das Regime in Warschau nahm den Sechs-Tage-Krieg zwischen Israel und den arabischen Staaten des Jahres 1967 zum Anlass, ein Exempel an den wenigen Zehntausend nach der Schoah im Land verbliebenen Juden zu statuieren und sie als politische Sündenböcke zu brandmarken. Über 3000 polnische Juden wählten in Folge der offiziell lancierten „Antizionistischen Kampagne“ Israel als neues Heimatland. Dort trafen sie auf eine Gesellschaft, die in zahllose Konflikte verstrickt war: den Krieg gegen die benachbarten arabischen Staaten, der Okkupation der Palästinensergebiete und den innenpolitischen Spannungen zwischen europäischen und orientalischen, religiösen und säkularen Juden.
Neben einer historischen Einordnung der Migration nimmt der Autor auch deren Analyse unter migrationspsychologischen Aspekten vor. Die beschriebenen Erfahrungen werden im beiliegenden Dokumentarfilm „There Is No Return To Egypt“ veranschaulicht, in dem Zeitzeugen dieser sogenannten 1968er-Migration in ihrem heutigen Lebensumfeld in Israel zu Wort kommen.<br>At the end of the 1960s the Peoples Republic of Poland was plunged into an economical and domestic political crisis. In the light of the Six-Days-War of 1967 between Israel and the Arab states the regime in Warsaw took this war as an occassion to make an example of the few tens of thousands of Polish Jews, who had remained in the country after the Shoah, and to cast them as political scapegoats. As a result of an officially launched "anti-Zionist campaign", more than 3.000 Polish Jews left Poland and chose Israel as their new homeland. There they encountered a society entangled in numerous conflicts: the war against the neighboring Arab states, the occupation of the Palestinian territories and the domestic tensions between European and oriental, secular and religious Jews.
In this work, the author gives a historical and sociological ovierview and classification of the migration of Polish Jews to Israel. He also analyzes the psycholigical aspects of this migration. The migration experiences of several protagonists and their integration into the Israeli society of the 21st century are visualized in the attached documentary "There Is No Return To Egypt".

Les penseurs et écrivains ont depuis l’Antiquité constitué une partie importante des personnes touchées par l’exil politique, situation qui en retour a influencé leurs œuvres et marqué la littérature. Cette tradition littéraire s’est vue, dans la seconde moitié du XXe siècle, profondément bouleversée par l’émergence des totalitarismes et l’affrontement avec les démocraties que ces régimes, sous leurs différentes formes, ont suscité. Ce contexte politique inédit a provoqué, outre un accroissement du nombre des écrivains concernés, d’importantes transformations structurelles, obligeant notamment les exilés à remettre en cause leur propre image, leurs thèmes et stratégies de communication, ainsi qu’à revoir la portée de leurs écrits. L’étude comparée des œuvres de Jorge Semprún, Christa Wolf, Julio Cortázar et Alicia Dujovne Ortiz, permet de mettre en lumière des changements esthétiques communs à ces écrivains engagés, ayant fui respectivement l’Espagne, l’Allemagne et l’Argentine, et de constater la naissance, à cette époque, d’une écriture originale<br>Since Ancient Times, thinkers and writers have in large numbers been struck by political exile. In return, this situation has influenced their work and literature as a whole. In the second half of the 20th Century, this literary tradition has been deeply transformed by the surge of totalitarian regimes, and the struggle with democracies which these regimes have provoked. This new political context has induced a large increase of writers in exile, but also important structural transformations, forcing the exiles to modify their own images, the themes of their work and their communication strategies, and also the nature of their writings. The comparative study of the works of Jorge Semprún, Christa Wolf, Julio Cortázar and Alicia Dujovne Ortiz allows us to discover common aesthetic changes between these politically committed writers, who have flown respectively from Spain, Germany, and Argentina, and to note the birth of a new form of writing

L’étude vise à décrire l’émergence d’une nouvelle esthétique migrante construite autour de l’expérience polyvalente et multiforme du refuge, en identifiant les différents éléments de continuité et de discontinuité qui relient la fiction contemporaine au canon littéraire du passé. Focalisée sur des romans qui puisent dans la littérature de harraga (Taytānīkāt afrīqiyya d'Abū Bakr Ḥāmid Kahhāl et Anāšīd al-milḥ d'al-'Arabī Ramaḍānī), la première partie met en évidence les liens entre les textes qui relatent l'expérience de la migration clandestine et ceux qui se concentrent sur l'exode des demandeurs d'asile, en faisant ressortir le même type de discours critique à l'égard de la forteresse Europe et des hiérarchies établies par le système humanitaire. The study aims to describe the emergence of a new migrant aesthetic built around the polyvalent and multifaceted experience of "refuge", identifying the different elements of continuity and discontinuity that link contemporary fiction to the canon of the past. Focusing on two novels that draw on the tradition of harraga literature (Abū Bakr Ḥāmid Kahhāl's Taytānīkāt afrīqiyya and al-Arabī Ramaḍānī's Anāshīd al-milḥ), the first part of this work sheds light on the links between texts that recount the experience of clandestine migration and those that focus on the exodus of asylum seekers, bringing out from them the same kind of critical discourse towards Fortress Europe and the hierarchies established by the humanitarian system. Linking the concepts of vulnerability, trauma and resilience, the second part is devoted to the realities of transit and immobility, and analyses the spaces of exception embodied by Palestinian refugee camps (Ḥuzāma Ḥabāyib's Muḫmal) and pre-revolutionary Syria, characterised by a dual reality of regional shelter and repression (Rūzā Yāsīn Ḥasan's Ḥurrās al-hawāʼ). Sur les quelques 200 femmes retrouvées qui quittent les ordres religieux au cours du XVIe siècle en France, en Suisse et en Angleterre, certains itinéraires de vie montrent la difficulté d’une adaptation au siècle, qui prend d’abord une forme économique. En effet, ces femmes, souvent privées d’un soutien familial (elles ont pu sortir contre le gré de leurs familles car leur sortie menaçait les héritages familiaux en les réinstaurant potentiellement parmi les héritières potentielles), seules dans le monde pour la première fois de leur vie, doivent trouver les moyens d’une adaptation séculière. Mais la marge de manœuvre n’est pas toujours large : ainsi, d’un côté, des femmes de la grande noblesse, telle Charlotte de Bourbon, future princesse d’Orange, sortent et retrouvent leur position sociale, profitant de réseaux anciens de solidarité nobles, de l’autre, des femmes inconnues, issues de familles aux origines sociales variées, affrontent le retour au siècle sans relais ni soutiens économiques, amicaux ou familiaux. Se posent alors les questions du devenir de ces femmes : quelles formes prend leur sécularisation ? Si les discours protestants et catholiques acclament ou condamnent le mariage, il semblerait que ce choix ne soit pas le premier fait par ces femmes en rupture de cloître. Ainsi, ces parcours présentent des alternatives multiples, entre l’élaboration d’un foyer conjugal, l’obtention de pensions, de rentes, ou un retour familial. Les anciennes religieuses inventent donc leur itinéraire de vie, dans un contexte d’affrontements confessionnels au sein duquel leur statut d’anciennes religieuses influence et conditionne sans cesse les modalités et les conditions de possibilité de leur retour<br>Out of the 200 or so women that I found who left the religious orders during the 16th century in France, Switzerland and England, certain life paths suggest the difficulty of adapting to the secular life, especially in terms of economy. Indeed, these women, often deprived of family support (they were able to leave against the will of their families because their exit threatened family legacies by reintroducing them as potential heirs), alone in the world for the first time, had to find the means for a secular adaptation. But their capacity for action was often limited: thus, on the one hand, noble women, such as Charlotte de Bourbon, the future Princess of Orange, left and regained their former social position, with the help of various networks of solidarity; on the other hand, less famous women, from families with various social backgrounds, faced the return to the world without any economic, friendly or family support. A question then arises as to the future of these women: what form does their secularization take? If Protestant and Catholic discourses acclaimed or condemned marriage, it would seem that only some of the women who had escaped from the cloister chose that path. Thus, these paths present multiple alternatives, between forming a conjugal home, obtaining pensions, annuities, or returning to their parents’ home. Through these paths, the former nuns invented their life itineraries, in a context of religious confrontations in which their status as former nuns constantly influenced and conditioned the modalities of their return to the world

Cette recherche doctorale est consacrée à la population française d'origine européenne et chrétienne, établie en Algérie puis rapatriée, appelée ici la population pied-noire. Ce groupe social revendique, le plus souvent, une culture et une identité particulières. Il se présente également comme déraciné. Le départ d'Afrique du nord est toujours considéré comme un exil par de nombreux membres de cette population, en dépit du fait qu'il s'agisse d'un rapatriement au sein de l'Etat-nation. Le rapatriement est ainsi intégré dans la construction identitaire de ce groupe. Il semble, de ce fait, que les particularismes identitaires et culturels de la population pied-noire aient été conservés, bien que modifiés, suite à sa migration. Qu'en est il de ses rapports à l'espace? Quels sont ses liens actuels avec son territoire perdu ? Ce groupe s'est-il, parallèlement, approprié certains espaces et lieux en métropole ou à l'étranger? Ces questionnements concernent donc à la fois la culture et l'identité du groupe mais aussi sa territorialisation et sa territorialité à l'heure actuelle. Il s'agit avant tout d'appréhender à quel point culture, identité et territoire interagissent et quel est l'impact d'une migration, de la mobilité de manière plus générale, sur ces interrelations. Une reterritorialisation semble être une nécessité pour la sauvegarde du groupe social, mais aussi pour une transmission culturelle et identitaire aux générations n'ayant pas ou peu connu l'Algérie coloniale. La forme prise par la recomposition territoriale pose tout de même question. La conception d'un territoire de forme aréolaire parait devoir être dépassée<br>This doctoral research is devoted to the french population of european and christian origin, established in Algeria, then re-patriated, called here the pied-noir population. This social group asserts a particular culture and identity. It also presents itself as uprooted. The departure from north Africa is still experienced as an exile by many members of this population, despite the fact that it truly was a repatriation within the nation-state. Re-patriation is thus integrated, generally, in the identity construction of this group. It seems that identity and cultural particularisms of the pied-noir population were preserved, although modified, following its migration. What happened to its rela tionship to space ? What are its current bonds with its lost territory? ln parallel, did this group take possession of certain spaces and places in france or abroad ? These questions concern at the same time the culture and the identity of the group but also its territorialisation and its territoriality at the present time. It is a matter, firstly, of taking stock of the extent to which culture, identity and territory interact with each other, and of the impact of a migration, and of mobility (more generally), upon these interactions. A reterritorialisation seems to be a necessity for the safeguard of the social group and also for a transmission of culture and identity to the generations who knew little or not at all of colonial Algeria. The form taken by territorial recombining raises questions. The concept of a territory as a limited area appears to be exceeded

A partir du postulat psychanalytique de l'inconscient qui inscrit le manque au coeur sujet, cette thèse doctorale met en avant l'articulation universelle du sujet à la culture, au-delà des déclinaisons particulières qui viennent métaphoriser – à travers les signifiants de chaque culture – l'interdit fondamental structurant cette articulation et les prescriptions culturelles formulées à partir de celui-ci. Pour ce faire nous nous sommes appuyés sur l’expérience du vécu subjectif de l'exil entraînant une mise en suspens des illusions fondatrices de l'appartenance dans le contexte de notre rencontre clinique avec un membre de la communauté migrante rom en Île-de-France. En disant rom, nous parlons d'une appartenance culturelle et sociale qui, d'un point de vue psychanalytique, fonctionne selon des coordonnées symboliques. Ces coordonnées, avant d'être spécifiques à une culture, sont universelles à ce que Freud appelle la Kultur : le sujet soumis à l'interdit fondamental trouve sa place dans l'ordre des générations et dans la différence des sexes. C'est à partir de cette place que ce tisse le désir du sujet qui doit faire avec son manque qui se décline et circule à travers les signifiants de sa culture. Si une particularité est à prendre en compte, elle est à situer au niveau des conditions sociales de la réalisation du mouvement migratoire : la conservation de l'organisation des structures sociales de la communauté en terre étrangère permet le maintien de la place symbolique initiale du sujet au sein de son univers d'appartenance. Ainsi, si l'amarrage symbolique du rom migrant ne s'abîment pas, bien qu'il soit constamment confronté avec un imaginaire qui pullule autour de la figure de l’étranger, c'est parce qu'il a scellé son inscription dans un ailleurs inaliénable et intouchable (dit Athiganos en grec ancien) par les effets immédiats du dépaysement et de la non-reconnaissance d'une place chez l'autre. Ainsi nous avons pu comprendre, dans ce contexte migratoire particulier, que l'exil ne commence pas avec le déplacement mais lors de la séparation d'avec la communauté d'appartenance, avec la confrontation à un manque de sens au coeur de soi qui émerge dans la rencontre à l'étranger provoquant une mise en question radicale de la place symbolique initiale du sujet.Face l'évocation nostalgique de la perte du sujet exilé, l'adresse du clinicien aura consisté à écouter de manière respectueuse les contenus – objets de la perte, que le patient présente comme étant d'ordre culturel – mais d'y aller au-delà, de centrer son attention sur le processus même de la perte et de l'épreuve de l'ébranlement identitaire que traverse le sujet, en se découvrant orphelin des illusions qui fondaient son appartenance et sa place symbolique qui soutenait son désir. Les questionnements qui surgissent dans ce contexte seront celles qui mènent vers la subjectivité du patient, relevant les lignes de faille de sa suture symbolique: interrogations des origines, de l'ordre familial, du rapport aux parents, des droits et privilèges des autres membres de la fratrie, de ses propres choix sexuels, etc.Au cours du notre suivi clinique nous avons pu observer un usage subjectif de place accordé à l'étranger, en tant que territoire d’aliénation symbolique nécessaire au sujet aux prises avec le désir menaçant de l'Autre féminin, dont le sujet se sauve à travers un mouvement d'auto-exil. Entendu et accueilli dans la parole, il a pu se métaphoriser en un exil fécond. C'est suite à une opération d'appropriation de ce déracinement subjectif, qu'une installation a été possible dans un espace symbolique autre que celui des origines, métaphorisé par l'hébergement social, devenu espace d'accueil de cet exil subjectif premier<br>This doctoral thesis emphacises the universal relation between subjet and culture from the standpoint of the psychoanalytic postulate of the unconscious as determining the fundamental lack of the subject, all of this beyond particular cultural declensions which “metaphorise” – through the signifiers of each culture – the fundamental prohibition which structures this relation as well as the cultural commandments thereby expressed.For this purpose, we base ourselves on the subjective experience of exile in real life as suspending the fundamental illusions of belonging, more specifically within the context of our clinical encounter with a member of the Roma migrant community within the Ile-de-France region. When using the term “Roma”, we refer to cultural and social backgrounds which, from the point of view of psychoanalysis, function according to symbolic coordinates. Such coordinates, before becoming culturally specific, are universal through what Freud designates as Kultur: the subject, who is subjected to the fundamental prohibition, finds a meaningful place within the order of generations and within gender differences. It is from this place that the subject, who must make do with his lack – lack which declines and circulates within the signifiers of his culture –, weaves his desire.If any particularity is to be taken into account, it must be located within the social conditions determining the migratory movement: the compositional safeguarding of the community's social structures even in foreing land permits the subject's initial symbolic configuration within his place of belonging to be conserved. Hence, if the symbolic mooring of the migrant Roma is not lost, even though he is constantly confronted with an imaginary overrun with figures of foreignness, it is because he has sealed its inscription within an elsewhere which is unalienable and intangible (said Athiganos in ancient Greek) as an immediate consequence of the unfamiliarity and the disallowance of a place among the others.Following this view we may understand, in such a particular migratory context, how exile does not commence with displacement, but rather through separation from a community of belonging, through confrontation with the lack of meaning within oneself – lack of meaning emerging within the encounter with the foreigner, radically questionning the subject's original symbolic place.Facing the exiled subject's nostalgic evocation of his loss, the clinician's task is to respectfully acknowledge these contents – as lost objects, which are presented by the patient as being of cultural order – , and go beyond, to focus upon the psychic process of loss itself, as well as the weakening of identity as a trial endured by the subject, as the latter becomes orphaned from the illusions founding the membership and symbolic place which suppored hitherto his desire. The questions arising from such a context will be those which lead to the patient's subjectivity, bringing out the fault lines of his symbolic composition: doubts of his origins, of the family order, of linkages with parents, of the rights and privileges of his siblings, of his own sexual choices, etc.Throughout our clinical follow-up, we observed a subjective usage of the place given to the foreigner, as a symbolic territory of alienation indispensable to the subjet facing the threatening desire of the feminin Other, from which the subject flees through a movement of auto-exile. If met and acknowledged through speech, he could metaphorise himself in a prolific exile. Following the operation of such subjective uprooting was the possibility that a symbolic space other than that of the origins be invested, metaphorised through social accomodation, to become a space capable of accomodating the initial subjective exile

À partir d’entretiens biographiques menés avec des réfugiés et inspirée par la méthode de l’« évaluation biographique des politiques publiques », cette thèse s’intéresse aux reconstructions d’une vie en exil de jeunes hommes ayant fui vers la France et l’Allemagne entre 2014 et 2017. La comparaison entre les études de cas a permis de distinguer différents types de « dynamiques de fuite » dans lesquelles l’émigration des jeunes hommes s’inscrit. Elle met aussi en évidence que les logiques des politiques d’accueil et d’intégration mises en place par les deux États façonnent leurs expériences lors des différentes étapes de leurs parcours qui suivent la fuite : à l’entrée dans la catégorie de « demandeur d’asile », durant la phase de demande d’asile ainsi qu’après l’obtention du statut de « réfugié ». Toutefois, cette thèse montre aussi que les possibilités de reconstruire une vie en exil ne dépendent pas seulement des situations de vie objectives des réfugiés dans les deux pays. En effet, les interprétations subjectives de l’exil, comme rupture d’un parcours de réussite ou chance biographique, affectent également les cours d’actions des réfugiés<br>Based on biographical interviews conducted with refugees and inspired by the method of “biographical policy evaluation”, this dissertation examines how young men who fled to France and Germany between 2014 and 2017 reconstruct life in exile. Through the comparison between the case studies different types of “flight dynamics” where distinguished. The research also shows that the logics of reception and integration policies implemented by the two States shape people’s experiences at different stages of their life course after the flight : when entering the category of “asylum seeker”, during the asylum application and after obtaining “refugee” status. However, the study also highlights that the possibilities of reconstructing life in exile do not only depend on the objective living situations of the refugees in the two countries. Subjective interpretations of exile, either as a rupture of a successful life or as a biographical opportunity, also affect refugees’ courses of action

In this essay, two voices are heared, from two women: a certain artist Xena, who talks about her life and its dramas, interwoven with her own experiences from her diaries; and the voice of Maria, who analyzes Xena's life story and her art, diffracted through the prim of the history of 21stC art. Art the outset, "President of Crimea. Constitution", announces its author as Xena-Maria; but it is not yet clear whether the author is one person or two, nor who they are. Is it Maria who writes here, or Xena, or both? Or are they one and the same person? But at the end of the story, which is told rather in a form of certain legends and fairy tales, Maria and Xena turn into one whole, and meaningfully put an ellipsis after the words "to be continued". This reception was specially intended by the artist Maria Kulikovska, author of this essay, in order to protect both herself and the reader from possible persecutions by migration services and goverment officials of various countries, especially Russia. Also, for her it is an opportunity to step aside and analyze her own life and art form a third person, about which, perhaps, a fictional character from her childhood talks - a sensible step for Maria Kulikovska. The step that her creative language conceptually continues is to replicate casts of her own body and establish them in different spaces and contexts. So she fairly confuses the viewer as to where is the truth, and where is fiction; where is herself, and where is her clone - only now, here, she has applied the same trick in her text. This essay tells a very personal story of the life of a human body, a migrant woman in forced relocation, displacements, alienation and persecutions for her views on life and the conduct of society, and for her moral values expressed throught architecture, sculpture, drawings, performances, actions and public statements. Through the prism of geopolitical upheavals, it tells the artist's own story: How her analysis of own body position and boundaries helped her overcome stigma regarding the body of a woman from Eastern Europe, and how art can save and redeem in an unending inner drama.

Plus de trois cents familles d'origine lao résient à Montpellier. Mon enquête auprès de ce groupe est constituée de rencontres répétées de plusieurs familles dans le cadre privé et d'observation de cérémonies rituelles, durant plusieurs années. A travers l'étude de plusieurs thèmes, cette recherche démontre que la construction culturelle et identitaire des jeunes de la communauté lao de Montpellier se fait à travers un maintien du lien avec le pays d'origine et une réinterprétation des traditions de leurs parents. Les migrants lao s'emploient à transmettre un minimum de traditions laotiennes grâce à la reproduction de gestes quotidiens et l'organisation de fêtes. Ils luttent contre l'acculturation en constituant un réseau de relations qui réactive sans cesse les principales valeurs lao. Une transmission minimum de la culture laotienne est donc effective. Mais les enfants de migrants lao ayant grandi en france, élaborent en fait une réinterprétation des traditions et des récits légués par leurs parents. Cette thèse rend compte donc des réflexions, des efforts et des concessions réalisés entre la culture lao et la culture française, jalonnant la quête d'identité des jeunes issus des vagues d'immigration laotienne. Le vécu des enfants de migrants à Montpellier démontre que leur construction identitaire au sein de la société française, passe par une prise de recul vis-à-vis du pays d'origine et du passé familial. Dans leur semblant de désorientation, ces enfants de migrants savent parfaitement une chose : ils n'iront pas vivre au Laos, car ils considèrent que leur place est en France. Ces gens d'origine lao construisent une identité originale qui leur est propre<br>Over 300 families of Lao origin live in Montpellier. My survey among this group has been carried out thanks to a number of meetings with several families in private and while observing ritual ceremonies over a few years. Through the study of several themes, this research shows that the young people belonging to the Lao community of Montpellier have developed their culture and identity while keeping up a link with the country of origin and carrying out a reinterpretation of their parents' traditions. Lao migrants endeavour to pass down some Lao traditions by copying everyday life's gestures and joining in celebrations. They fight against acculturation by building up a network of relationships which helps keeping the major Lao values alive. As a result ther is no doubt about some Lao culture being passed down. Yet, Lao migrants' children who were brought up in France are in fact reinterpreting traditions and stories inherited from their parents. Consequently, this thesis accounts for the reflexions, efforts and concessions which were involved between Lao and French cultures and which go along the identity quest of the young born of Lao immigration waves. The migrants' children's real-life in Montpellier proves that building up their identity in the French society requires assessing the country of origin and family past with the benefit of hindsight. Although they seem to be desoriented these migrants' children are fully aware of the fact that they will never live in Laos, for they consider they belong here. These young people are developing their own unique identity

La thèse propose une approche culturelle du phénomène de la migration albanaise fondée sur une méthodologie interdisciplinaire recourant à l’historiographie, l‘ethnomusicologie, l’anthropologie des émotions, l’anthropologie de la mémoire et de l‘absence. La recherche est basée sur un travail de terrain en Albanie du Sud, particulièrement entre 2007-2012 dans les régions où la tradition de chanter à plusieurs voix est encore vive. Le focus principal de ces missions fut les fêtes de villages pendant les Pâques et au mois d’août, occasion pour des milliers de migrants albanais d‘Italie et de Grèce de retourner dans leur village d’origine. La problématique principale de la thèse concerne les divers relations entre la migration vécue et imaginée et le chant. On a suivi les processus de création du chant et la „traduction“ de l’experience de migration en émotionnalité et en vocalité. A cette fin on a choisi une approche strictement émique en suivant les discours des chanteurs et les discussions entre ces derniers et leurs destinataires. Dans la discussion sur la „naissance du chant“ on a mis en évidence quelques concepts cruciaux indispensables à la création d’un chant d’exil (këngë kurbeti). C’est en premier lieu le concept de përjetoj („vivre l’experience“) qui rend possible et légitimise cet acte de création. Pendant la performance, deux autres concepts sont importants: „chanter la vérité“ et „pleurer en chantant“. Ont été cérnés les concepts émotionnels en usage en Albanie rurale, le développement historique du phénomène de la migration, la ritualité de la migration, et les processus de la mémorisation de la migration. Au centre de la thèse figurent les discours locaux et la performance de la musique en acte<br>This thesis, based on extensive fieldwork in South Albania between 2007-2012, proposes a cultural, performance-centred approach for studying Albanian migration in past and present. Migration is discussed both as a lived reality and an imaginary representation. Local village feasts occupy a central place in this discussion as highly symbolic events in which the social and cultural shift between remaining villagers and returning migrants becomes prominently visible. This contradictory reality is approached by applying an anthropology of absence and by discussing migration as seen through local narratives. The notion of absence is of particular importance as it generates a spatial, social and sonic nostalgia (mall), which becomes prominently visible in everyday life. This nostalgia is not understood as a depressing mental state which impeeds action, but as mobilizing creative energy. The thesis examines the creative processes for „translating“ migration experience into an emotionalised vocality following a stricly emic approach. For local singers the concept of „living through“ (përjetoj) is central, as it provides them with the legitimacy to sing about it. This holds particularly true for migration songs (këngë kurbeti) which possess a vital social and emotional function. They contain elements of two juxtaposed categories: those of song (këngë) and those of lament (vajtim). What singers and audiences define as a migration song, is largely subjective and contextual. Consequently we propose to describe migration songs either as a hybrid repertoire or a „performative category“. The second term implies that the very meaning of the song is constructed in the moment of its performance.In a final part the multiple links between death and migration are discussed, exemplified by the tragedy of Otranto in 1997, an accident which caused the death of several migrants. Death as permanent absence, and migration as temporary absence considered as a metaphorical extension of death coincide here in an emblematic case<br>Diese Promotion versucht, basierend auf ethnologischen Feldforschungen in Südalbanien zwischen 2007 und 2012, eine kulturelle Perspektive auf das Phänomen Migration in Albanien zu eröffnen. Dabei wird Migration sowohl als gelebte Alltagsrealität, als auch als eine mentale Konstruktion betrachtet. Lokale Dorffeste nehmen in dieser Diskussion als symbolisch besetze Orte der sozialen Auseinandersetzung über Konzepte wie Tradition, Modernität und Authentizität eine zentrale Rolle ein. Gleichzeitig werden in ihnen die sozialen und kulturellen Brüche zwischen verbliebener Dorfbevölkerung und den zu diesen Anlässen heimkehrenden Migranten sichtbar. Methodologisch wurde diese widersprüchliche Realität durch die „Anthropology of Absence“ einer näheren Untersuchung unterzogen. Zudem wurde Migration aus dem Blickwinkel individueller Narrative betrachtet. Das Konzept der „Abwesenheit“ ist für den Fall Albaniens von entscheidender Bedeutung, da es räumliche, soziale und klangliche Nostalgie (mall) definiert, die im Alltagsleben omnipräsent ist. Diese Nostalgie erweist sich nicht als hinderliches Element, sondern als eine Quelle der Inspiration für lokale Musiker. Sie aktiviert Prozesse der „Übersetzung“ von Migrationserfahrung in Emotionalität und in Gesangspraktiken. Für lokale Sänger steht beim Schaffensprozess das „durchleben“ (përjetoj) der Migrationserfahrung am Anfang eines Liedes. Diese Erfahrung verleiht ihnen die nötige Autorität um in authentischer Art und Weise über Migration zu singen. Das dabei entstehende Migrationslied (këngë kurbeti) besitzt wichtige emotionale und soziale Funktionen für die Dorfgemeinschaft, die in der Arbeit diskutiert werden. Musikalisch handelt es sich um ein Repertoire, das sich zwischen den grundsätzlich entgegengesetzten Polen von Lied (këngë) und Totenklage (vajtim) bewegt. Aus der vergleichenden Analyse von verschiedenen Aufführungskontexten für Migrationslieder geht hervor, dass die Einordnung eines Liedes als Migrationslied von subjektiven Perspektiven und dem jeweiligen Aufführungskontext abhängig ist. Der Begriff „performative category“ wird daher vorgeschlagen um diese Gruppe von Liedern näher zu definieren.Im abschließenden Teil werden die engen Beziehungen zwischen Tod und Migration als Formen der permanenten bzw. temporären Abwesenheit am Beispiel der Tragödie von Otranto 1997 untersucht. L’historiographie a souvent négligé la place occupée par les migrants francophones au sein de la jeune république américaine, se bornant à suivre l’itinéraire des exilés politiques les plus célèbres, bannis par la Révolution Française ou la Restauration, ou celui des utopistes rêvant d’instaurer une société nouvelle au Nouveau Monde. Au cœur de la Jeune Amérique confrontée à l’épineux problème de l’esclavage, à l’agonie des empires coloniaux et à la naissance de l’esprit d’entreprise et du capitalisme, ils furent nombreux à tenter la fortune outre atlantique entre 1783 et 1815, établissant dans le corridor créole de puissants liens commerciaux, culturels et religieux entre côte Est, Nouvelle-Orléans, Antilles et espace atlantique. Tel est l’objet de la présente réflexion qui emprunte la voie ouverte par l’histoire atlantique, et propose, en tirant parti de la correspondance et des ressources archivistiques, une écriture novatrice de l’histoire des migrations commerciales francophones entre Pittsburgh et Louisville à l’époque des révolutions atlantiques<br>Historiography often neglects the part of Francophone migrants in the young American republic, merely following the route of the most famous political exiles banished by the French Revolution and the Restoration, or the Utopians dreaming to establish a new society in the New World. In the Early Republic faced with the thorny problem of slavery, the agony of colonial empires and the birth of entrepreneurship and capitalism, many migrants tried fortune beyond the Atlantic Ocean, between 1783 and 1815, establishing in the “Creole corridor” powerful commercial, cultural and religious ties between east coast, New Orleans, West Indies and Atlantic space. Cette thèse porte sur l'héritage reçu par les générations suivant l'arrivée des premiers migrants venus du Maghreb et plus largement du monde islamique. L'immigré est un exilé du ventre, des conditions de vie difficile l'ont conduit à aller chercher ailleurs, à s'exiler. Arrivé sur les côtes de l'occident son monde est remis en cause. Notamment par l'apparition de l'objet « a » bien souvent caché sous un voile sur les terres d'Islam. Le désir et les tentations engendrent un traumatisme du fait d'un bouleversement du discours de l'Autre en soi...La parole de l'Autre tombe comme une prédestination. Pour l'héritier de l'exil cette question s'accentue encore, comme le dira Lacan « L'inconscient c'est le désir de l'Autre », quelque chose se transmet au-delà du message…la déchirure de l'exil se transmet et l'exil physique vient recouvrir l'exil du langage<br>This thesis deals with the legacy inherited from the generations after the arrival of the first migrants from the Maghreb and more broadly from the Islamic world. The immigrant is an exile of the womb, difficult living conditions led him to go and seek elsewhere, to go into exile. Once on the coasts of the Occident his world is called into question. Particularly with the emergence of the object « a » frequently hidden under a veil on the lands of Islam. Desire and temptations lead to a trauma due to the turmoil in the speech of the Other in oneself...The word of the Other befalls as a predestination. For the heir to the exile this question becomes more marked, as Lacan says « the unconscious is the desire of the Other », something is imparted beyond the message… the wrench of the exile is transmitted and the physical exile comes and covers the exile of the language
