Abstract (sommario):
Linguistic evaluation has become an important area of inquiry in recent years. In the traditions of, e.g., lexical semantics, phraseology, corpus linguistics, and interactional linguistics, a large inventory of linguistic means have been identified by which speakers can express evaluative meanings. However, the class of German sentential idioms, e.g., Das kannst du dir in die Haare schmieren (lit. ‘You can smear that into your hair’, fig. ‘That is useless’), has not gained much attention. This paper explores how the evaluative meaning of German sentential idioms is constructed syntactically, semantically, and pragmatically. In particular, it is investigated how the meaning of these idioms interacts with the context in which they are used. A context model of evaluation is developed in which the cognitive category of cause plays a central role. The model is applied to contextualized examples, the findings supporting the hypothesis that cause is one of the core categories of evaluation.

Abstract (sommario):
The study of evaluation, affect, and subjectivity is a multidisciplinary enterprise, including sociology, psychology, economics, linguistics, and computer science. A number of excellent computational linguistics and linguistic surveys of the field exist. Most surveys, however, do not bring the two disciplines together to show how methods from linguistics can benefit computational sentiment analysis systems. In this survey, we show how incorporating linguistic insights, discourse information, and other contextual phenomena, in combination with the statistical exploitation of data, can result in an improvement over approaches that take advantage of only one of these perspectives. We first provide a comprehensive introduction to evaluative language from both a linguistic and computational perspective. We then argue that the standard computational definition of the concept of evaluative language neglects the dynamic nature of evaluation, in which the interpretation of a given evaluation depends on linguistic and extra-linguistic contextual factors. We thus propose a dynamic definition that incorporates update functions. The update functions allow for different contextual aspects to be incorporated into the calculation of sentiment for evaluative words or expressions, and can be applied at all levels of discourse. We explore each level and highlight which linguistic aspects contribute to accurate extraction of sentiment. We end the review by outlining what we believe the future directions of sentiment analysis are, and the role that discourse and contextual information need to play.

Abstract (sommario):
With the actualization of the evaluative and emotional aspects of understanding the linguistic world’s image (LWI), the linguistic paradigm includes the concepts of ‘evaluative world’s image’, ‘axiological world’s image’, ‘cultural and axiological world’s image’, which become the components of LWI. The purpose of the article: to outline the problems of theoretical and applied principles of the ‘axiological world’s image’ concept functioning in the modern linguistics. The stated goal motivates the solution of the following tasks: 1) to determine the achievements of the studies of the axiological world’s image in the linguistics of the XXI century; 2) to systematize and generalize the usage specifics of the analyzed term in linguistics; 3) to form a terminological minimum of research on the axiological world’s image (AWI). The object of exploration is the evaluative categorization, and the subject is the axiological world’s image as a result of the evaluative categorization. The emergence of a significant number of LWI studies in the last decade is due to the popularity of anthropological linguistics and is determined by the expansion of the subject of linguistics. AWI is a fragment of the universal LWI as a result of evaluative/evaluative-emotional comprehension of the world by a specific linguistic personality and linguistic community. Linguists use the concept of AWI in: a) linguoculturology, basing on the peculiarities of the representation of concepts; b) discourse, with the actualization of structural and semantic features; c) phraseology, in order to compare the value references presented in the phraseological funds of different languages, etc. The key problems for these research areas are: a) the place and role of the AWI in the system of linguistic world’s images; b) the structural organization of the AWI; c) objective definition of the AWI components (concept/evaluation concept/value concept vs value); d) terminological base. Thus, the description of the AWI requires consideration of knowledge of an interdisciplinary nature, a set of research goals and objectives, clear visions of the structure, components and units of analysis. We see the prospect in the further solution of the outlined problems with reliance on the interpretation of the AWI in lexicographic, terminological, reference, and other types of works.

Abstract (sommario):
Annotation: The relevance of this study is due to its connection with the modern direction of language learning - cognitive linguistics, which makes it possible to identify the specifics of the representation of human knowledge, including evaluative ones, in the semantics of linguistic units. The prospect of the cognitive approach in studying the processes of evaluative conceptualization and evaluative categorization is explained by the fact that it makes it possible to assess the role of a person in the perception and evaluation of the surrounding reality and the formation of evaluative values, taking into account the interaction of cognitive and linguistic factors. Accordingly, the evaluative categories "good" and "bad" in this study are considered from the point of view of the mental processes of evaluative conceptualization and evaluative categorization and their refraction in linguistic meanings. Keywords: concept, language, linguacultural study, linguacultural concept "bad", linguacultural concept "good", linguistic materialization of a concept, linguacultural research.

Abstract (sommario):
In recent years, the study of evaluative linguistic expressions has crossed the field of theoretical linguistics and has aroused interest in very different research areas such as artificial intelligence, psychology or cognitive linguistics. The interest in this type of expressions may be due to its relevance in applications such as opinion mining or sentiment analysis. This paper brings together Fuzzy Natural Logic and Fuzzy Property Grammars to approach evaluative expressions. Our contribution includes the marriage of mathematical and linguistic methods for providing a formalism to deal with the linguistic vagueness of evaluative expressions by describing the syntax and semantics of these structures. We contribute to the study of evaluative linguistic expressions by proposing a formal characterization of them where the concepts of semantic prime, borderline evaluative expressions and markedness are defined and where the relation between the semantic constraints of evaluations and their sentiment can be established. A proof-of-concept of how to create a lexicon of evaluative expressions for future computational applications is presented. The results demonstrate that linguistic evaluative expressions are gradient, have sentiment, and that the evaluations work as a relation of hypernym and hyponym, the hypernym being a semantic prime. Our findings provide the basis for building an ontology of evaluative expressions for future computational applications.

Abstract (sommario):
Evaluation — the function and usage of language to express the speaker’s or writer’s opinion — has only relatively recently become the object of systematic linguistic research, for example in stance or appraisal analysis. This paper proposes an alternative, corpus-based approach to evaluation which assumes that there are at least ten different meaning dimensions (parameters) along which speakers can evaluate aspects of the world. This framework helps to explain the complexity of evaluation, and in particular what is here called evaluative interplay or combination: the expression of more than two evaluative parameters at the same time, which can be realized by evaluative conflation (evaluations signalled by one and the same linguistic item) and evaluative collocation (evaluations signalled by different linguistic items). Both the parameter-based framework and evaluative interplay are illustrated with a number of examples from authentic discourse (mostly from British newspapers).

Abstract (sommario):
"The article is devoted to the consideration of the national cultural nature of evaluative language structures in the Kazakh and English languages. In this article, we set out to reveal the relationship of evaluative language structures in Kazakh and English with the national worldview. The article analyzes the activities of evaluative language structures (parables and idioms, proverbs) in the Kazakh and English languages to represent a conceptual picture of the world. The relevance of the research is manifested in the fact that the evaluation determines the spiritual culture of the nation, the conceptual picture of the world in its worldview by considering the use of evaluative meaning language structures in combination with the national worldview. In the study and systematization of theoretical material, general scientific methods of analysis, synthesis and deduction, as well as lexico-semantic analysis, comparative research methods were used. In modern linguistic research, various aspects of the study of evaluation are presented. In today’s linguistics, we cannot say that the problem of value, evaluation is one of the most fully studied. Especially the linguocultural aspect of the evaluation category is one of the issues that needs to be studied. This article is considered a contribution to research in this field. The results of the study can be used in research in the fields of «Linguoculturology», «Cognitive linguistics», «Linguoaxiology». The conclusions obtained as a result of the study can serve as an impetus for a deeper study of the Kazakh and English evaluative vocabulary in the linguocultural direction. Abstract (sommario):
Background. A skill to evaluate different objects and phenomena of the objective reality establishes the nature of the interaction of the individual with the surrounding environment. This skill is considered to be one of the most important constituents of human cognitive activity. The necessity to evaluate develops human thinking. Since evaluation causes high interest of the readers in the sporting event, it is of prime importance to analyze the ways of linguistic representation of evaluative parameters in sports commentary. Purpose. The article finds out and considers the evaluative parameters and their linguistic representation. Materials and methods. The research material comprises 4 football scripts taken from the Sportsmole sports website (https://www.sportsmole.co.uk). The componential and definitional analysis as well as discourse and contextual analysis together with the pragmatic and cognitive methods were used in the analysis of the scripts. Results. The results of the research study showed that high level of evaluation is very typical of the speech of the sports online commentator. Following classifications were presented: according to the subject of evaluation, to the scale of evaluation and the presence of an emotional component as well as an absolute and relative types of evaluation. A rational component in the commentator’s evaluative speech was investigated. It is considered to be a result of thinking activity of the addresser and is not connected with his or her emotions. An emotional component which is closely linked to inner feelings and emotions was also analyzed. A conclusion was drawn that the speech of sports commentators is characterized by explicit and implicit evaluation. Practical implications. The results of the research study contribute to the theoretical aspects development in the field of pragmatic linguistics and sports discourse. They can also be used in the lectures on pragmatic linguistics and lessons of the English language. The paper is of particular interest to the researchers of sports discourse and online commentary.

Abstract (sommario):
In the past two decades or so, a number of researchers from various fields within linguistics have turned their attention to interpersonal phenomena, such as the linguistic expression of speaker opinion or evaluation (also called stance or appraisal), or the encoding of subjectivity in language and its diachronic development (subjectification/subjectivization). Many linguists have offered categorizations of evaluative meaning, based on authentic discourse data, but no connection has been made with cognitive approaches to appraisal processes. This paper offers a first meta-theoretical exploration of such issues. It compares dimensions of evaluation that have been identified in linguistic and cognitive studies, and also examines how psychological research into basic emotions can be related to linguistic research on affect. On the basis of these comparisons a proposal for a new classification of evaluative meanings is made. The focus of this paper is on only one aspect of the highly complex phenomenon of evaluation, namely potential evaluative dimensions, although other relevant issues will also be touched upon, including the pragmatics of evaluation (evaluation and context).

Abstract (sommario):
The subject matter of the article covers women’s emotional-evaluative lexis to study the linguistic-cognitive aspects of advertising, which determine the ways of influencing the critical thinking of the audience. The authors consider the theoretical prerequisites for applying the linguistic-cognitive approach as the key methodology to analyze the language of advertising in conjunction with the approaches used in the framework of gender linguistics. The relevance of the study stems from insufficient scientific coverage and the lack of a systematic description of the linguistic-cognitive aspects of advertising discourse in general, and the goals of using women’s emotional-evaluative lexis in the advertising text, in particular. Study results suggest that the main techniques implementing women’s emotional-evaluative lexis in an advertising text include anaphora, comparison, opposition, clarifying questions, hyperbolisation, etc. These language tools are used to promote generally accepted stereotypes and influence advertisement recipients - women who are the target audience of the advertised goods. Study results can be applied in further research covering the linguistic-cognitive aspects of advertising and gender-specific facets of emotional-evaluative lexis.

Slurs have recently received a great deal of attention from philosophers of language. They are thought to be special in both their linguistic properties and their rhetorical effects-that is, in both what they mean and what they do. In this paper, drawing on the work of Elisabeth Camp and Rae Langton, I argue that a wide variety of speech shares the interesting features normally imputed to slurs. In using a slur, Camp argues, a speaker signals allegiance to a derogating perspective. He does not indicate merely that he believes a certain proposition; he indicates that certain features of the world are salient for him and that he experiences them as having a particular kind of disvalue. In her work on hate speech, Langton has argued that speech can be successful not only in its appeal to believe something but also in its appeal to feel or desire something. By presupposing that a hearer feels a certain way, a speaker can make it the case that she feels that way. But none of this is specific to slurs and hate speech. Non-evaluative terms can function in just the same way. When a speaker uses the expression "You're skinny" as a compliment, for example, she presupposes a particular evaluative perspective. Because the perspective is communicated as part of the not-at-issue content of her utterance, it is especially difficult for her hearers to object. The perspective can thus become taken for granted in the conversation without having been explicitly proposed or argued for. This kind of utterance doesn't merely change hearers' beliefs; it can also change their conative attitudes. And, like uses of slurs and other thick terms, it can change what we have social permission to say and do.

Myskow, Gordon. "Evaluative language in history textbooks". Thesis, University of Birmingham, 2015. http://etheses.bham.ac.uk//id/eprint/6234/.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
This three-module thesis employs quantitative and qualitative methods to investigate evaluative language in Canadian secondary school and university history textbooks. The first module overviews approaches to the study of evaluation and key issues of historical discourse in need of research. The second module proposes a framework (Levels of Evaluation) for investigating history texts that combines methods from Martin and White’s (2005) Appraisal theory, and Hunston’s (2011) Status, Value and Relevance. The third module further theorizes this framework, employing Kress and van Leeuwen’s (2006) methods to account for evaluative features of visual texts. The Appraisal framework is also elaborated to include two subcategories of Judgment: Normality, and the Appreciation network is reworked to account for different types of historical significance. Coffin’s (2000) Voices of History framework is expanded to include an intermediary voice between Recorder and Appraiser, which was found to be a salient feature of history textbooks. Key findings include a higher frequency in secondary school than university textbooks of inscribed Attitude, a high overall occurrence of the resources of Affect, and a low overall occurrence of extra-evaluation, the evaluative level concerned with disciplinary engagement. Implications for the study of evaluation in historical discourse and history education are discussed.

Abstract (sommario):
Social media has become a large part of today’s pop culture and keeping up with what is going on not only in our social circles, but around the world. It has given many a platform to unite their causes, build fandoms, and share their commentary with the world. A tool in helping group posts together or give commentary on a thought is the hashtag. In this paper I explore the evaluative roles of hashtags in social media discourse, specifically on Twitter. I use a sample of randomly selected tweets from the Twitter API stream I collected and compiled myself. I collected a total of 200,000 tweets and filtered out Re-tweets. Looking at each individual hashtag I sorted them into the categories outlined by the Appraisal Theory proposed by Martin and White (Martin & White, 2005). I explore the types of evaluation expressed in hashtags, the relationships between evaluative hashtags and how users negotiate evaluations using meme hashtags.

Ruiz, Tada Marina. "Evaluative Language of Japanese-English Bilingual Women on Facebook". Doctoral thesis, Universitat de Barcelona, 2019. http://hdl.handle.net/10803/666194.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
The main purpose of this thesis is to research the interactional behavior of transnational Japanese-English bilingual women on Facebook (FB) through photo- initiated Status Updates (SUs) in terms of the use of evaluative language in Discursive Moves and their impact on the co-construction of their multiple identities. This was accomplished by following a group of Japanese- English bilingual women, or Primary Contributors (PCs) on FB from January 2012 to March 2017. As expected, most of their SUs were photo-initiated SUs as cues for conversation. The most prominent topics were selected for further multimodal interactional analysis: 1) Japanese food and restaurant experiences in the United States, 2) babies and motherhood, and 3) manicures/pedicures. The thesis is organized into 3 studies: Study 1 focuses on the interactional sets of Japanese food and restaurants in the United States, and how food is discursively used by the participants to evoke authoritative positioning as Japanese transnationals or as foodies. Study 2 examines the co-construction of identities of these bilingual women dealing with the topic of babies and motherhood and how they evoke linguistic, racial, and gendered identities. Study 3 focuses on how interactional sets dealing with the topic of manicures/ nails co-construct gendered identities such as fashionista women. A total number of 33 Primary Contributors, 596 responders, and 447 interactional sets were obtained. Interactional sets include: the photo-initiated SU, the Responses to the Status Updates (RSUs), and responses by the PCs to the RSUs. Each of these interactional sets were coded for possible linguistic and orthographic choices, multimodal features, such as emoticon use and "Likes", and translations were provided when the chosen language was Japanese. In order to describe the interactional behavior of the participants, each study analyzes the interactional behavior following Bernhoff's (2010) participation roles, which classifies participant profiles according to engagement and activity. Furthermore, in Study 1, 9 types of Discursive Moves (DMs) following Miller & Gergen, (1998), Locher, (2006), and Morrow (2012) are identified. Their frequencies are calculated and their sequentiality in the interactional sets is analyzed. Results show that the most frequent Move type was Evaluation (34.10%), used by the participants to position themselves as authoritative Japanese or innovative foodies. Language choices and verbal and non-verbal features of Evaluation Moves are discussed with regards to how these features contribute to relational work and identity co-construction among interactants. Study 2 analyzes in 200 interactional sets the complimenting behavior directed towards Japanese-English bilingual mothers, with regards to who is doing the complimenting (gender and parental status), and who is being complimented (baby, mother, or father). Results show that the adjectives used for compliments ratify traditional family roles among this bilingual community; however, the mothers also stress non-traditional identities such as multiethnic and multilingual through features of photos and language choices. Study 3 examines 219 interactional sets for patterns of compliments and Compliment Responses (CRs) following Holmes (1986), and Placencia and Lower (2013). Compliment topic and direct or indirect formulations were identified and related to language backgrounds and gender. Results are aligned with previous work on compliments online (Placencia and Lower, 2013) in this Japanese-English bilingual community: women produce more compliments than men, and women do so in direct formulations. The production of these compliments reproduces dominant and traditional gender roles of women being more associated with topics of fashion. With regards to Compliment Responses, results indicate that Acceptance is the most frequently used CR strategy among this group. The three studies in this thesis contribute to an understanding of how identity and relational work were co-constructed and managed by using Evaluation Moves and compliments on FB among Japanese-English bilingual women.

Abstract (sommario):
The purpose of this study is to investigate disciplinary variation in academic writing, focusing in particular on the use of adjective patterns followed by prepositions. The analysis proceeds through a detailed quantitative and qualitative analysis of these patterns in two large corpora of authentic texts. The analysis focuses not only on the specific adjectives found in the patterns themselves, but also on collocations within and around each pattern. The empirical focus of the study will be on two ‘soft-applied’ disciplines (Becher and Trowler 2001), applied linguistics and business studies, as represented by two corpora of research articles drawn from 16 leading journals in each field. Comparison of the results for each corpus shows that there are many differences in form and meaning between the two disciplines: it is argued that the features revealed by my analysis are indicative of the epistemological characteristics of these two different disciplinary discourses. These differences reveal the particular culture and norm of applied linguistics and business studies.

"Mobilising action through management email texts: the negotiation of evaluative stance through choices in discourse and grammar". Publisher:University of New South Wales. Languages & Linguistics, 2009. http://handle.unsw.edu.au/1959.4/43514.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
This thesis is concerned with explicating the role of language in mobilising action through management emails. Situated within the context of organisational change in a globalised manufacturing business, the project is framed by behavioural observations from management scholars Palmer and Hardy (2000) of mobilisation strategies that utilise linguistic resources since they: (a) involve a sense of obligation or inclination in directives; (b) show how co-operation will produce mutual benefits; (c) construct desired actions as legitimate, beneficial or inevitable; and (d) use past or anticipated meanings, for or against certain actions. Systemic Functional Linguistics is the underlying framework employed to provide a theoretically principled account of the intuitively derived observations from Palmer and Hardy (2000) which are applied to a sample of twenty-seven email texts, through corpus- and text-based analysis. A major finding is that the representation of action is enacted interpersonally through the verbal group. This view complements experientially dominated accounts of the verbal group which focus on the tense system. Further, action is found to be motivated through the negotiation of evaluative stance. By relating the grammar of the verbal group as well as other resources to the discourse semantics of Appraisal, modulation (of obligation or inclination) is found to be enabled by both negative as well as positive judgements of capacity. Specifically, judgements of capacity are re-interpreted as invocations of high obligation as managers seek to mobilise (further) positive performance. The analysis demonstrates that elements in the verbal group (complex) and Appraisal co-opt action through enabling positioning of the writer, in terms of assessing and grading categorical meanings, manipulating interpersonal time, or foregrounding solidarity. A significant contribution to the thesis is an extension of the system of GRADUATION: FOCUS (Hood, 2004a) through the demonstration of how resources of the verbal group negotiate expectations of appearances and achievements. This study has also extended the resources of GRADUATION: FORCE by applying it to the management context. The practical contribution of the study is that these insights may more explicitly inform management training and enable managers to participate more effectively within their community of practice.

In this thesis, we dedicated ouselves to understanding how evaluative constructions with “super”, “mega”, “hiper” and “ultra” are instantiated and conventionalized in the Portuguese language. In this way, we take on the theoretical contribution of Usage-based Functional Linguistics (BYBEE, 2010; MARTELOTTA, 2011; FURTADO DA CUNHA et al., 2013; TRAUGOTT & TROUSDALE, 2013; ROSÁRIO & OLIVEIRA, 2016; BISPO & SILVA, 2016), starting from the assumption that such evaluative constructions would have been shaped in and by the context of use, and so being integrated in the grammar structure of the language. Our research hypothesis are the following: (a) “super”, “mega”, “hiper” and “ultra” fulfill new communicative purposes constructions that differ from their uses as prefixes; (b) the uses of evaluative constructions with “super”, “mega”, “hiper” and “ultra” constitute a form-function pairing which is recent within the Portuguese language though. In view of such a hypothesis, our most specific aims, in this sense, are (i) to describe the constructional patterns, or form-function pairings, of evaluative constructions with “super”, “mega”, “hiper” and “ultra” to identify the three schematic levels proposed by Traugott and Trousdale (2013) – scheme, subscheme and microconstruction – and (ii) propose a constructional network that would be able to relate the analysed constructions in a hierarchical way around a common abstract scheme. In order to fulfill the objectives proposed in this paper, we have constituted a corpus for the analysis of data, with the distribution of texts, taken from blogs and magazines available on the Internet, in three levels of formality – established within a continuum – and in three different synchronies. Our analysis is based on the equation between the qualitative analysis and on the frequency calculation of use, since we aim at identifying and describing the form-function pairings linked to each level of schematicity, which are conventionalized in the language through the increasement of their frequency in the use of the language. The obtained results point out that “super”, “mega”, “hiper” and “ultra”, through an analogical process with the scheme {[adverb of intensity] + [adjective/adverb]} – which has as its main representative the adverb of canonical intensity “muito” before an adjective or an adverb – and from their original meanings and their uses as prefixes, they instantiate in the language a more abstract and more general scheme for the indexation of the evaluative speaker’s positioning within the discourse by means of intensification and focus. In addition, we identified thirteen microconstructions which are distributed, by similarities and specificities regarding their formal and functional properties, in three subschemes that differ semantically because of the scope intensification and the focusing and as a consequence the morphosyntactic role played by “super”, “mega”, “hiper” and “ultra” in the constructions they appear. In this context, we demonstrate how the scheme, subschemes and microconstructions are responsible for the emergence of new evaluative constructions with “super”, “mega”, “hiper” and “ultra” in the language as well as the establishment of a constructional network available to the speaker access in the production of a coherent discourse.

Abstract (sommario):
This study investigates the issue of linguistic competition by analysing a dataset comprised of ‑ie/-o doublets, e.g. kiddie/kiddo, weirdie/weirdo. The analysis is based on the key tenets of the onomasiological approach to word-formation (Štekauer 1998) supplemented by the prototypical approach to affix rivalry (Hamawand 2007). The analysis aims to identify the nature of connections between the conceptual, semantic, and onomasiological levels within ‑ie and ‑o paradigms taken separately and whether these connections may play a role on the onomatological level. The analysis of the data allows for identifying four generic onomasiological models (i.e. quality, patient, object, and action), in which the categories of quality and patient convey the highest degree of competitiveness within the evaluative domain of pejoration.

Abstract (sommario):
This paper aims to analyse the use of evaluative adjectival lexicogrammatical patterns in selected British online newspaper discourse in terms of genre specification. It focuses both on the normalised frequency of the patterns as well as on the evaluative semantic groups of the adjectives embedded in the patterns analysed. The genres chosen for the analysis are politics and crime. 282 articles from six national British online newspapers (the Sun, the Mirror, the Express, the Guardian, the Telegraph, and the Independent) were downloaded to create the corpus. These were then analysed via Sketch Engine for the evaluative adjectival patterns introduced by Bednarek (2009). The adjectives found in the patterns were further examined and manually divided into semantic groups introduced by Collins COBUILD. The data were then compared in an attempt to identify discourse patterns and contrasts, and valuable insights were gained into the lexicogrammatical features studied. The analysis indicated that evaluative adjectival patterns are indeed embedded in newspaper stories and both the tabloids and the broadsheets employ these patterns more or less equally for the same genres. Both types of newspaper mainly embed patterns ‘v-link ADJ’ and ‘v-link ADJ prep’ in both genres. However, when broadsheets report on politics, the use of the 'it v-link ADJ finite/non-finite' pattern, can be considered marked.

In INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE on Computational Linguistics and Intellectual Technologies. RSUH, 2023. http://dx.doi.org/10.28995/2075-7182-2023-22-287-294.

Abstract (sommario):
The article deals with the problems of presenting ideologically marked words in the dictionary. It is based on the analysis of the words that appeared in the Russian language or received new meanings during the Russian-Ukrainian conflict. The difficulty of the lexicographic representation of such words is that their evaluative potential is mobile, for example, offensive nicknames can be assimilated by “offended” ones and become neutral words. Ideologically marked words can either exist in the lexicon for a long time or be quickly replaced by other lexical units. Therefore, in the interpretation of ideologically marked words, it is advisable to indicate the approximate time of their existence. In addition to temporary indicators, in the dictionary entry of such words, it is necessary to indicate whose word it is, that is, on whose behalf an assessment is given to a person or event. Since we believe that explanatory dictionaries should contain not only common names, but also proper names, the article also discusses geographical names.

Abstract (sommario):
The paper describes the proposed strategy for evaluation controlled text generation with the sentiment as attribute. Our approach mainly consists of automatic sentiment analysis (ruBERT) and topic modelling (BERTopic), which are applied to a parallel corpus with artificially produced and human-written texts. The model for evaluation is fine-tuned on the parsed reviews from big Russian movie-related website ruGPT3Large with the sentiment as prompt. The results of the analysis demonstrate that the proposed methods can offer a more comprehensive understanding of the advantages and limitations in the context of semantics and sentiment. Additionally, the paper employs metrics such as BERTscore and self-BLEU to further evaluate the generated text. The proposed methodology provides a novel approach for evaluating the quality of generated text and may have implications for future studies in the field

Abstract (sommario):
Language models’ growing role in natural language processing neces- sitates a deeper understanding of their linguistic knowledge. Linguistic probing tasks have become crucial for model explainability, designed to evaluate models’ understanding of vari-ous linguistic phenomena. Objective: This systematic review critically assesses the linguistic knowledge of language models via linguistic probing, providing a comprehensive overview ofthe understood linguistic phenomena and identifying future research areas. Method: We performed an extensive search of relevant academic databases and analyzed 57 articles pub- lished between October 2018 and October 2022. Results: While language models exhibit extensive linguistic knowledge, limitations persist in their comprehension of specific phe- nomena. The review also points to a need for consensus on evaluating language models’ linguistic knowledge and the linguistic terminology used. Conclusion: Our review offers an extensive look into linguistic knowledge of language models through linguistic probing tasks. This study underscores the importance of understanding these models’ linguistic capabilities for effective use in NLP applications and for fostering more explainable AI systems.

Abstract (sommario):
The purpose of the study is to identify the figurative means in the formal diplomatic texts of speeches of chief delegates of the Ukrainian SSR to exert influence at the sessions of the UN General Assembly. Based on the interpretive method of speech analysis and the method of generalisation of the data obtained, an attempt was made to identify the main figurative means and expressiveness of speech, which help to achieve the effect of influence on the reader (listener). In order to identify hidden meanings, a hermeneutic approach to understanding texts was used. According to the results of the study, the most actively used linguistic means of figurativeness in the considered texts are epithets, metaphors, phraseologies. There are many more negative epithets used in the texts of speeches than positive ones, which aim to make people aware of the idea of self-preservation, to arouse emotions of anxiety, fear, vigilance. Metaphors of positive and negative evaluation are used to verbalise mental states, social states and thought processes. Most of the epithets, metaphors, idioms represented in the text are used to denote a negative evaluation, which is perceived as a deviation from the norm and is motivated by the following factors: the reluctance of people to take positive action, irresponsible attitude of some people towards others, socially unacceptable flaws and shortcomings. A logical continuation of this study is the analysis of linguistic means of figurativeness and evaluativity of other types of texts of the official style, including statements and conventions.

Abstract (sommario):
The paper is focused on the correlation between the psychological archetype of a film character and the linguistic elements composing their speech. The Nurturer archetype is represented in the film Inside Out by the personalized emotion Joy. Joy is depicted as an antropomorphous female character, whose purpose is to keep her host, a young girl Riley, happy. As the Nurturer, Joy is completely focused on Riley’s happiness, which is expressed by lexico-semantic group ‘happy’, positive evaluative tokens, exclamatory sentences, promissive speech acts, and repetitions. She needs the feeling of connectedness with other members of her family, which is revealed by lexico-semantic groups ‘support’ and ‘help’. She is ready to sacrifice everything to save the girl in her care, which is demonstrated by modal verbs, frequent word-combination ‘for Riley’, and directives.

Abstract (sommario):
The names of the kings of the Fifth Dynasty may serve as a prototypical example for the re-evaluation of Manetho’s king-list: Userkaf, Sahure, Neferirkare, Shepseskare, Reneferef, Nirewoser, Djedkare-Isesi and Unas are all recorded in the king-list of Manetho as transmitted by Sextus Julius Africanus according to the Ecloga chronographiae of George Syncellus. Although the names as preserved have obviously suffered on a long way of copying manuscripts over and over again, a closer look at the Greek transcriptions reveals the high quality and the still unbroken relevance of Manetho’s Aegyptiaca for modern Egyptological scholarship, when dealing with chronology, onomastics and linguistics. As will be shown, there is a line, identifiable with variable degrees of difficultly but finally clearly discernible, which leads all the way down from the Old Kingdom to Manetho’s Aegyptiaca.

Abstract (sommario):
The article examines the language of the russian-ukrainian war of the 21st century based on the materials of compressed media texts; the role of political narratives and psychological-emotional markers in the creation of new lexemes is clarified; the verbal expression of forecasts of ukrainian and foreign analysts regarding the course of hostilities on the territory of Ukraine is shown. Compressed media texts reflect the main meanings of the language of the russian-ukrainian war in relation to the surrounding world. First of all, the media vocabulary was supplemented with neologisms – aggressive and sad: “rashism”, “denazification”, “katsapstan”, “orks”, “rusnia”, “kremlins”, “parebrik”, “in the swamps”, “nuclear dictator”, “putinism”, “two hundred” and others. Numerals acquired new expressive and evaluative meanings: “200s” (dead), “300s” (wounded), “400s” (russian military personnel who filed reports for termination of the contract), “500s” (hopelessly drunk russian soldiers, alcoholics who are unable to perform combat tasks). The language of war intensified the slogans of the struggle for state independence and people’s freedom. The scope of the greeting “Glory to Ukraine! – Glory to Heroes!”.
