Abstract (sommario):
Purpose. We tried to determine the perceptions of experienced swimming teachers and coaches (hereinafter “experts”) regarding common mistakes in backstroke swimming. Moreover, we compared their evaluation with the evaluation of participants with no professional expertise in teaching/coaching swimming (hereinafter »non-experts«). Methods. 70 participants were recruited and divided either in the experts group (E) or in the non-experts group (NE). Group E consisted of 21 swimming coaches (11 males and 10 females; ages 34 ± 11 years) with the certificate of Slovenian Swimming association and with lengthy experience (at least 10 years) in teaching and coaching swimming. 49 undergraduate students (29 males and 20 females; ages 18 ± 1 years) without any teaching or coaching experiences in swimming were assigned to Group NE. They were asked to mark 42 mistakes that most commonly occur in backstroke swimming. They evaluated these mistakes on a seven-point scale of importance for backstroke swimming performance. Results. For 27 of 42 mistakes significant differences existed in evaluations between both groups. Group NE marked them with a significantly lower score, i.e. as less important than Group E. Conclusion. In light of the results obtained by Group E, a scale of importance of mistakes for backstroke swimming was established. This scale could be used for future swimming teachers’ preparation in a way to understand the principles of backstroke with greater ease. Moreover, it could help swimming teachers and coaches classify swimmers according to their backstroke technique performance.

Abstract (sommario):
This topic studies the importance of recognizing that mistakes and flaws are the ones, which train humans and strengthen them. It is a noted fact that the reason behind the development of every nation over its counterparts is the lessons it learns from and takes out of its mistakes. It is also due to the fact that experiences and tests are for the evaluation of the rate of success and failure. This topic also examines that the Holy Quran, which is the truest of books and the strongest of resources commands us to follow the fine and smooth prophetic method, which includes the superior characteristics of values and principles. To take some examples of those values, repelling the evil by goodness, maintaining connection with the one who cuts us off, and supporting the oppressed ones. It is significant to learn the prophetic method in dealing with others’ faults and how to build a character that is able to convince people reasonably, logically and easily. Therefore, this research comprises three sections. The first section: definitions. The second sections: the positive factors of dealing with others. The third section: The prophetic manner of dealing with the mistaken or the one at fault.

Abstract (sommario):
Building an effective system of organization of scientific activity, which is harmonized with the needs of society, is becoming an urgent task for Ukraine. A decisive role in this process is played by the procedure for evaluating the efficiency of activities of scientific institutions. The aim of the publication is generalizing the practical experience gained in the People’s Republic of China (PRC) and searching for opportunities to implement the organizational principles of the methodology for evaluating the results of scientific activity into the practice of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. In recent decades, the PRC has made significant progress in the development of scientific and innovative activities. Scientific research in China is carried out by research institutes and research universities. The system of financing scientific activities in this country is built on the basis of the results of evaluation, obtained by creating a unique methodology in which scientometric instrumentarium is combined with expert evaluation. The peculiarity of the organization of scientific activity in the PRC is that that if there are more than 2.5 thousand higher education institutions in the country, most scientific research is carried out by a small number of scientific organizations, that include only about 100 universities. The reform of the organizational mechanism of the State management of scientific activities in China took place in several stages, each of which deserves to be studied on the subject of positive experience and possibilities of avoiding the undesirable mistakes. The practical experience of continuous reform of the organizational system of management of scientific activities in China deserves a detailed study and search for ways of possible implementation of the instrumentarium for evaluating the results of scientific activity in the practice of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, taking into account the similarity of the structure of the scientific sphere. Both countries have similar research management structures, including relevant ministries and a network of national academies of sciences. This fact speaks in favor of using the existing practical experience of reforming the field of scientific research and preventing mistakes made by government officials during the implementation of a number of reforms in China (for example, the proven inexpediency of evaluating the results of the activities of scientific institutions, relying solely on quantitative indicators of scientific activity). Also noteworthy is the experience of mixed funding of scientific research, which combines the public sources with the competitive ones.

Abstract (sommario):
Simulation training in medicine is a powerful tool for acquiring knowledge and practical skills in an environment close to the real world. Decreasing training opportunities directly on the patient tend to introduce simulations close to the real hospital environment without compromising the patient’s safety.  The aim of the study was to evaluate the effectiveness of simulation training in the Medical Simulation Training Center (MSTC) at the Medical University of Plovdiv. A prospective observational descriptive study was performed at the MSTC at Plovdiv Medical University between September 2017 and March 2019. The study included 245 respondents who participated in one or more practical simulation trainings and were surveyed. The results of the study suggest that the knowledge, skills and attitudes of the trainees improve after training sessions. By increasing the number of visits, the self-esteem and confidence in performing the manipulation also increases, knowledge and technical performance significantly improve and mistakes are reduced. A statistically significant relationship has been demonstrated between the sequence of visits and acquired competencies (p=0.0001). There are no performance mistakes in those attending three or more times, but 16.2% of them still experience uncertainty while performing. Here, however, 83.8% performed the manipulation automatically and without mistakes.  Simulation training in medicine is effective and useful. It has its place in the curriculum for students and is a good tool for acquiring knowledge, skills and techniques in postgraduate education.

Abstract (sommario):
Measuring and evaluating a learner’s learning ability is always the focus of every person whose aim is to develop strategies and plans for their learners to improve the learning process. For example, classroom assessments, self-assessment using computer systems such as Intelligent Tutoring Systems (ITS), and other approaches are available. Assessment of metacognition is one of these techniques. Having the ability to evaluate and monitor one’s learning is known as metacognition. An individual can then propose adjustments to their learning process based on this assessment. By monitoring, improving, and planning their activities, learners who can manage their cognitive skills are better able to manage their knowledge about a particular subject. It is common knowledge that students’ metacognitive and self-assessment skills and abilities have been extensively studied, but no research has been carried out on the mistakes that novice developers make because they do not use their self-assessment abilities enough. This study aims to assess the metacognitive skills and abilities of novice software developers working in the industry and to describe the consequences of awareness of metacognition on their performance. In the proposed study, we experimented with novice software developers and collected data using Devskiller and a self-assessment log to analyze their use of self-regulation skills. The proposed study showed that when developers are asked to reflect upon their work, they become more informed about their habitual mistakes, and using a self-assessment log helps them highlight their repetitive mistakes and experiences which allows them to improve their performance on future tasks.

Abstract (sommario):
This article develops a formal model of spontaneous recovery from pathological addiction. It regards addiction as a progressive susceptibility to stochastic environmental cues and introduce a cognitive appraisal process in individual decision making depending on past addiction experiences and on their future expected consequences. This process affects consumption choices in two ways. The reward from use decreases with age. At the same time, cognitive incentives emerge that reduce the probability of making mistakes. In addition to modeling the role of cue-triggered mistakes in individual decision making, the analysis highlights the role of other factors such as subjective self-evaluation and cognitive control. The implications for social policy and for the treatment of drug and alcohol dependence are discussed.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract Context.—Participation in proficiency testing is required under the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments of 1988. Although the primary purpose of this testing is evaluation of current laboratory performance, a major secondary benefit of such testing is postulated to be progressive improvement in laboratory performance over time as laboratories learn from their previous experiences and feedback. Objective.—To test the hypothesis that a secondary result of proficiency testing is improvement over time of laboratory performance. Design.—The performance of participants in a large proficiency testing program (EXCEL), designed for clinic and office laboratories, on a specific problematic competence, the ability to differentiate group A streptococcus from group C streptococci, was monitored during a 6-year period (1996–2001) for changes in participant performance. Interventions.—With each testing cycle, feedback on performance relative to peers and an educational discussion analyzing performance and suggesting best practices was submitted to participants. Results.—Despite consistent feedback, there was no significant change in participant performance throughout the period studied. Conclusions.—In a large, stable proficiency testing program, a significant throat culture competence, which demonstrated less than optimal performance, did not improve over time, suggesting that current utilization of proficiency testing results in laboratory improvement programs is suboptimal.

Abstract (sommario):
Health interventions should be tested before being introduced into clinical practice, to find out whether they work and whether they are harmful. However, research studies will only provide reliable answers to these questions if they are appropriately designed and analysed. But these are not trivial tasks. We review some methodological challenges that arise when evaluating fertility interventions and explain the implications for a non-statistical audience. These include flexibility in outcomes and analyses; use of surrogate outcomes instead of live birth; use of inappropriate denominators; evaluating cumulative outcomes and time to live birth; allowing each patient or couple to contribute to a research study more than once. We highlight recurring errors and present solutions. We conclude by highlighting the importance of collaboration between clinical and methodological experts, as well as people with experience of subfertility, for realising high-quality research. Lay summary We do research to find out whether fertility treatments are beneficial and to make sure they don’t cause harm. However, research will only provide reliable answers if it is done properly. It is not unusual for researchers to make mistakes when they are designing research studies and analysing the data that we get from them. In this review, we describe some of the mistakes people make when they do research about fertility treatments and explain how to avoid them. These include challenges which arise due to the large number of things that can be measured and reported when looking to see if fertility treatments work; failure to check whether the treatment increases the number of live births; failing to include all study participants in calculations;challenges in studies where participants may have more than one treatment attempt. We conclude by highlighting the importance of collaboration between clinical and methodological experts, as well as people with experience of fertility problems.

Abstract (sommario):
Most programmers make mistakes when writing code. Some of these mistakes are small and require few edits to the original program – a class of errors recently termed last mile mistakes. These errors break the flow for experienced developers and can stump novice programmers. Existing automated repair techniques targeting this class of errors are language-specific and do not easily carry over to new languages. Transferring symbolic approaches requires substantial engineering and neural approaches require data and retraining. We introduce RING, a multilingual repair engine powered by a large language model trained on code (LLMC) such as Codex. Such a multilingual engine enables a flipped model for programming assistance, one where the programmer writes code and the AI assistance suggests fixes, compared to traditional code suggestion technology. Taking inspiration from the way programmers manually fix bugs, we show that a prompt-based strategy that conceptualizes repair as localization, transformation, and candidate ranking, can successfully repair programs in multiple languages with minimal effort. We present the first results for such a multilingual repair engine by evaluating on 6 different languages and comparing performance to language-specific repair engines. We show that RING can outperform language-specific repair engines for three of these languages.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract Student reflection presents opportunities to think through the learning process especially in a non-guided experiential learning course where students themselves need to focus on learning outcomes and course objectives. The purpose of this study is to explore students learning experiences by examining their reflections of university students participating in internships in the animal science industry during the summer semester of 2021 while taking coursework at the university. A total of 12 bi-weekly reflections collected and a qualitative thematic analysis was conducted with strengths, struggles, skill development, and disposition development as major theme categories. The reflections were coded in MAXQDA and network maps were created with Girvan-Newman cluster analyses in the UCINET and NetDraw software. We identified 5 clusters (Q=0.613) from correlations of the reflection codes at P < 0.01 (Fig.1). In the cluster with the highest correlations, students associated internship activities with networking opportunities, gaining new perspectives, observation of experts working in context, and problem-solving, indicating that most students appreciated these aspects of the program. In another cluster, students associated skill development, experiential learning opportunities, and collaborations, with productive failure indicating that they learn from trying and making mistakes. In the third cluster, students' perceptions of career advancement, mental stamina, and work ethic were correlated with reduced confidence in their new work environment. In the fourth cluster, students identify that the activity stimulated curiosity, however, this is linked with necessary repetition, collaboration, and interpersonal skills while they struggle with the application of the concepts in the real world. In the final cluster, students’ career experience was correlated with their development of marketing skills, sense of self, responsibility, and time management. Although the internship program enhanced the students' knowledge and skills, a structured instead of open reflection is recommended to gain a better understanding of the overall picture.

Abstract (sommario):
Throughout the years, scholars have determined that foreign language learning is associated with negative emotional reactions rooted from communication apprehension, test anxiety, and fear of negative evaluation; a phenomenon more widely known as Foreign Language Anxiety (FLA), which has effectively hindered language learning for many students. Moreover, it does not help that the abrupt and drastic pedagogical transformations brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic in itself has proven to be stressful and anxiety-provoking for the learners. In this context, the aim of this study was to determine the foreign language anxiety experienced by Filipino learners in the remote learning setup. This mixed method study gathered data from 83 Filipino college students about their FLA experience across the four macro skills: reading, writing, listening and speaking amidst remote learning. Results revealed the participants experienced the highest level of anxiety with speaking. However, it must be noted that the fear of making mistakes and fear of negative evaluation can be observed across all the four macro-skills. Participants also struggle with opportunities to improve across the four macro skills due to the intermittent internet connection, inadequate resources, and limited interaction with their teachers and peers.

Abstract (sommario):
We reflected on our experience in applying for, operating, and renewing a Research Experience for Undergraduates Site program in computational biology from 2016 to 2021 at a metropolitan public university, funded by the National Science Foundation of the U.S.A. Our mistakes during the application process were avoidable in retrospect. Our Interdisciplinary Computational Biology, iCompBio, REU site was a 10-week summer research program that included R and Python coding bootcamps at the beginning and short workshops on various topics interspersed throughout the program. ICompBio was in-person in 2019 and virtual in 2020 and 2021. ICompBio was fortunate to have a team of faculty mentors that were committed to undergraduate research training and recognized the importance of diversity in computational biology. Many students and faculty mentors turned the challenges in virtual REU programs into learning opportunities and had fulfilling research experiences. ICompBio participants reported learning gains higher than average in a 2020 external evaluation for virtual REU sites, particularly in the aspects of Research Self-Efficacy, Science Identity, and Life Utility. Our lessons and experiences may be helpful to other faculty and researchers that are interested in similar programs at their own institutions.

Abstract (sommario):
Objective: An association between anomalous parental bonding experiences (lack of parental care, overprotection, or both) and depression during adulthood has been observed in several studies. The objective of the present study was to evaluate several different personality dimensions as possible mediators of the relationship between perceptions of parental bonding and depressive symptoms in adulthood. Methods: Outpatients with depression (n = 138) completed the Parental Bonding Instrument (PBI), the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), and several measures of proposed personality vulnerabilities to depression. The conceptual and methodological criteria of Baron and Kenny (1986) were used to assess possible mediating effects of personality variables. Results: In men, overprotection by their fathers was significantly associated with depression; neuroticism, socially prescribed perfectionism, and concern over mistakes acted as mediators of this relationship. In women, lack of care by their mothers was significantly associated with depression; self-criticism, socially prescribed perfectionism, and concern over mistakes mediated this relationship. Conclusions: The present study provides evidence that personality factors may mediate the observed relationship between parental rearing style and depression. These potential causal mechanisms warrant longitudinal evaluation.

Abstract (sommario):
Many studies on human–computer interaction have demonstrated that the visual appearance of an agent or a robot significantly influences people’s perceptions and behaviors. Several studies on the appearance of agents/robots have concluded that consistency between expectations from an agent’s or a robot’s appearance and performances was an important factor to the continuous use of these agents/robots. This is because users would stop interacting with the agents/robots when predictions are not met by actual experiences. However, previous studies mainly focused on the consistency between an initial expectation and a performance of a single instance of a task. The influence of the orders of successes or failures for more than one instance of a task has not been examined in detail. Therefore, in this study, we investigate the order effects of how the timing of sufficient or insufficient results of animated agents affects user evaluation. This will lead to the contribution to fill the lack of studies regarding more than one task in the field of human–computer interaction and to realize the continuous use of agents/robots as long as possible and to avoid stopping to use the agents/robots owing to their successful design. We create a simulated retrieval website and conduct an experiment using retrieval assistant agents that show both sufficient and insufficient results for more than one instance of retrieval tasks. The experimental results demonstrated a recency effect wherein the users significantly revised their evaluations of the animated agents based on new information more than that based on initial evaluations. The investigation of the case of repeated instances of a task and the influence of successes or failures is important for designing intelligent agents that may show incomplete results in intelligent tasks. Furthermore, the result of this study will contribute to build strategies to design behaviors of agents/robots that have a high or low evaluation based on their appearance in advance to prevent users from stopping use of the agents/robots.

Abstract (sommario):
Many accidents occur due to various factors when undertaking construction projects. One of the most important achievements when undertaking a construction project is to accomplish the project without major accidents. This paper studies the effect of stress, fatigue and workload on construction contract worker in term of their safety performance results using the Situation Awareness Rating Technique (SART), with reference to how it relates to the root causes of accidents. Investigating the factors associated with accidents helps to identify and minimize the associated mistakes or causes and reduce or avoid accidents and improve safety performance in construction projects. Data were collected using a SART survey of employee of 18 contractors working on construction of electrical substations in the western area of Saudi Arabia. It was found that most accidents occurred at the worker level because of their lack of awareness and training. It is apparent that SART affects the safety performance of contractors and it varies with the position, age and experience of workers. To implement a safe working environment free of accidents, it is necessary to improve all job levels according to their insufficient area and activate a full safety management system with periodic reviews to improve it and make it more effective.

Abstract (sommario):
Foreign language anxiety (FLA) as a crucial affective variable has been unexplored in the context of the Spanish language. This paper reports a study that investigated Spanish language anxiety (SLA) and its potential causes and inquired into the relationship between the role of a teacher and SLA. A mixed-methods research design was adopted, including a questionnaire [Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety Scale (FLCAS)], semi-structured interviews, and observation as data collection among the undergraduates (female = 32, male = 18) and Spanish teachers (2). The FLCAS data revealed that students experience low to moderate anxiety, with communication apprehension being highly rated (mean = 3.26) followed by fear of negative evaluation (mean = 2.8) and test anxiety (mean = 2.25). The interview data recorded listening and speaking tasks, fear of negative evaluation, teacher talk, negative self-comparison, and previous bad language learning experiences are the prominent sources of anxiety. In this context, Spanish teachers are found to reduce students' anxiety mostly by giving interesting activities, accepting students' mistakes, and using body language. This paper offers insight into the causes that trigger FLA and an impactful relationship between a teacher's role and FLA. Some suggestions are proposed for teachers based on the findings to mitigate students’ anxiety.

Abstract (sommario):
A great deal of emphasis has been placed on the development of communication competencies among students in light of the significance of effective communication in the 21st century. Past studies identified communication apprehension (CA) as one factor that hindered learners’ ability to communicate effectively. This study used a qualitative, phenomenological method involving six (6) participants who have lived experience of CA in a unique Chinese context, the Sino-Foreign Joint Venture, a concept that promotes cooperation of foreign educational institutions with China’s educational services industry. In-depth interviews, essays of the participants’ experiences, stimulated recall, and classroom observation has been employed. The video-recorded interviews were carried out as the primary method of data collection. The results revealed eight themes identified as anxiety-provoking classroom situations, namely, level of difficulty and familiarity with the topic, incomprehensible input, preparation, interpersonal evaluation and criticism, voluntary speaking and being asked to, making mistakes and losing face, classroom oral presentations, and oral language assessment and rate of recurrence. This study throws in user input to sensitize Sino-Foreign higher education institutions, curriculum developers, and teachers to the debilitating influence of communication apprehension on language learners.

Abstract (sommario):
Cooperative learning is a teaching strategy that holds promise for improving the mathematical skills and attitudes of students. With increased frequency teachers have been reporting their positive experiences with cooperative-learning techniques in the mathematics classroom (e.g., Artzt [1979]; Behounek et al. [1988]; Gilbert-Macmillan and Leitz [1986]; Rosenbaum et al. [1989]; and Slavin [1987]). Support for cooperative learning now comes from the NCTM's Curriculum and Evaluation Standards for School Mathematics (Standards) (1989): “Small groups provide a forum in which students ask questions, discuss ideas, make mistakes, learn to listen to others' ideas, offer constructive criticism, and summarize their discoveries in writing” (p. 79). Group assignments enable learners to work together, helping each other integrate new knowledge with prior knowledge and discover their own meanings as they explore, discuss, explain, relate, and question new ideas and problems that ar ise in the group.

Abstract (sommario):
This study was conducted to describe the teacher’s process of teaching English by implementing project-based learning method during the pandemic covid-19 by using Whatsapp. This study use qualitative design and the data collection techniques used observation sheet, and interview. The data analysis uses Miles Huberman and Saldana concept and the participant of this study only one teacher who teaches in the 7th grade at SMPS Kartika XX-6 Kendari. The results showed that based on the project-based learning steps in the 2013 curriculum, the teacher only applies 4 steps such as: 1) creating a set schedule means the teacher determines the time when student projects must be collected. 2) monitoring student projects because learning is done online, so teachers involve parents in monitoring students during the learning process and completing projects, 3) assessing student's outcomes, the teacher assigns a value to the student project according to the scoring rubric created, 4) evaluating students' experiences, the teacher provides feedback to students so they can correct the mistakes they made. The teacher gives a project in the form of a video regarding conversations about greetings, self-introductions and talking about daily activities with the aim that students get used to speaking in English. Project work is carried out individually by students due to the online learning process as a result of the covid-19 pandemic which was submitted by using WhatsApp.

Abstract (sommario):
English language learners have difficulties in English in pronouncing fricative consonants, voiced and voiceless TH, plosive consonants and vowel sounds. Serious speech mistakes can lead to miscommunication since poor pronunciation abilities make it difficult for other people to hear what you are saying. Additionally, students may miss their lecturers' direct explanations of proper pronunciation when taking online English lessons with inconsistent Internet access. Proper pronunciation can help students participate in conversations, form connections, and improve graduates' employability abilities. Furthermore, pronunciation skills are learnt independently at higher education institutions. Before designing a web-based tool for self-directed learning of English pronunciation, the designers must get feedback from the students about their self-directed learning, self-evaluation of English language proficiency and English learning experiences through Online Distance Learning (ODL). This survey is a preliminary survey towards the development of a heutagogical English pronunciation application. An online questionnaire was disseminated to 424 respondents from various higher education institutions in Malaysia. Â In this survey, firstly we aimed to get feedback from the students about their self-directed learning, self-evaluation of English language proficiency and English learning experiences through Online Distance Learning (ODL). The survey consisted of demographic data of respondents, standardized test of English language proficiency, self-evaluation of English language proficiency and English language learning experiences during COVID-19. The findings suggested that although language learners have developed their self-directed learning skills, they still need to improve these skills in learning the language using ODL. Learners consider themselves as having average English language proficiency. They were responsible for improving their pronunciation skills and needed assistant tools to improve their pronunciation skills. It is recommended that an application that uses a heutagogical approach such as Speech-to-Text and Text-to Speech need to be developed.

Abstract (sommario):
The aim of this study was to explore the role of personality traits as predictors of perfectionism and to determine the existence of gender differences in the ways perfectionism is manifested. The study was conducted on 302 respondents aged 18 to 57. The Perfectionism Inventory scale (PI) used to measure perfectionism assesses lower-order perfectionism facets: Concern Over Mistakes, High Standards for Others, Need for Approval, Organization, Perceived Parental Pressure, Planfulness, Rumination, and Striving for Excellence; and three higher-order facets: Conscientious Perfectionism, Self-Evaluative Perfectionism and Perfectionism Inventory Composite. The Big Five Inventory (BFI), based on the Big Five model of personality, was used for the evaluation of personality traits: Extraversion, Neuroticism, Conscientiousness, Agreeableness and Openness to experience. In determining gender differences, the t-test was used. Men scored higher than women on Organization, Planfulness, and Conscientious Perfectionism, whereas women scored higher than men on Perceived Parental Pressure. Three multiple regression analyses were conducted, one for each of the tested criterion variables, to test the significance of predictors of perfectionism. Predictor variables were the five dimensions of personality traits, and the criterion variables were the dimensions of higher-order perfectionism. All three tested models have statistical significance, and the sum of the predictors, made up of basic personality traits, accounts for one-fifth to one-third of the variance in the criterion measures of perfectionism. Almost all personality traits are shown to be significant predictors of perfectionism, with the exception of Conscientiousness, which is not a predictor of Self-Evaluative Perfectionism. Based on the results, it can be concluded that perfectionists generally keep to themselves, are less tolerant towards others, often worry, are sensitive to their own actions as well as those of others, but also open to new experiences. The obtained results contribute to a better understanding of the social adaptation and functioning of young adults, including young athletes.

Abstract (sommario):
Grounded in Lazarus’ (1999) Cognitive Motivational Relational Theory of Emotions and informed by Courneya and Carron’s (1992) Game Location Framework, this study examined the influence of stress and emotions on the decision-making of UK association football referees who were refereeing at different competitive levels. Through the use of interviews, it was found that stressors emanating from the crowd, previous mistakes, confrontation, players with bad reputations, and assessors evaluating referee performance was associated with threat or harm stress appraisals. These appraisals were associated with negative emotions that, when not managed, influenced poor perceived decision-making. In particular, the amateur referees reported situations where they were not able to cope with the stress and negative emotions experienced, and displayed either counter-attacking decision-making through giving decisions against the offending player, coach or team, or incorrect decisions due to a lack of focus caused by anxiety. In comparison, professional referees demonstrated problem-focused and emotion-focused coping strategies that promoted better decision-making. Implications for referee development are provided, as are recommendations for future research.

Abstract (sommario):
Changes and uncertainties are inevitable in the construction industry so that contractors have to find ways to improve themselves in all aspects in order to enhance their competitiveness in tendering as it determines their survival in the industry. It is believed that experiences and knowledge of past projects have the potential to improve the competitiveness of the bids submitted. This study aims to propose project learning in a structured manner as an effective approach for improvements in bidding. Through a questionnaire survey, the five most significant benefits from project learning for the betterment of bid submissions were identified, namely: “improved accuracy in pricing”, “more realistic estimates”, “better evaluation of risks involved in tendering for a project”, “less rework and repetition of mistakes”, and “faster resolution of similar problems”. Further, the five most suitable project learning methods for improvement in bidding were recommended, which included “periodic learning meeting”, “documentation learning”, “on job training”, “debriefing”, and “informal face-to-face interaction”. Accordingly, a structured learning model toward improved bidding is developed for large construction firms.

Abstract (sommario):
The article presents the results of theoretical and empirical research on psychological features of the Impostor Phenomenon manifestations. The key features of Imposter Phenomenon are highlighted via theoretical analysis and the importance of emotional, behavioural and cognitive aspects of its display are accentuated. The empirical study analyzed specifics of the Impostor Phenomenon display which depended on the respondents’ subjective assessments of their emotional states in situations evoking impostor feelings (such as intensive feelings of anxiety, helplessness, exhaustion); components of perfectionism; behavioural self-regulation and psychological well-being. People with frequent impostor feelings and intense experiences of the phenomenon reported increased levels of anxiety, helplessness and exhaustion. In addition, these people were characterized by focusing on excessive planning and programming of their actions, which sometimes interfered with ability to flexibly adjust behaviour and led to inadequate assessment of their actual capabilities and obtained results. The high perfectionism of such people had a negative impact on psychological well-being, hindering self-acceptance. People with a moderate level of the impostor experience reported feelings of calmness and self-confidence, a sense of sufficiency and ability to perform a new task successfully. They were lesser concerned about making mistakes and doubted less about their actions, while maintaining fairly high personal standards. In addition, they demonstrated a relatively highly adequate evaluation of results and adaptability of developed action programs. They were characterized by a relatively better psychological well-being and a focus on self-acceptance.

Abstract (sommario):
This research aimed at finding out the teachers’ teaching vocabularies process using Islamic songs at MTsN 2 Makassar, and the reflection of the teachers’ experiences in teaching vocabularies using Islamic song. This research employed a qualitative method focused on narrative inquiry data with 2 subjects of English teachers at MTsN 2 Makassar chosen through purposive sampling method. The data were collected by using interview and observation and it was analyzed by using Miles and Huberman theory. The results of this research revealed that the teachers had different ways in teaching vocabularies classified into four phases: 1) class preparation was based on the lesson plan they made, prepared the song, the task, additional materials, and media. One of the teachers suggested that the category of Islamic songs is not always determined by the song sung by Muslims, yet the messages can be associated with Islamic view; 2) Pre-teaching, the teachers did warming up and stimulated the students to lead to the main activity; 3) whilst teaching, the teachers did main activities by using media, proper strategies, found out the moral value, and assessed the students; and 4) post-teaching, they concluded, motivated, and gave homework. The reflection showed that inhibited factors were the students’ lack of motivation, inadequate infrastructure, unsuitable media, big number of students, got difficulty in pronouncing, classifying and stuck with unfamiliar words, lack of confidence and felt afraid of making mistakes. Moreover, similar results appeared on how they engaged the students to obtain the moral message from the songs such as thanking to God and He is always with us. Conversely, they had dissimilar reflections in evaluating their strengths and weaknesses. The researchers recommend to use Islamic song to inspire the students about part of speech, the moral message, or choose general song containing of Islamic view.

Abstract (sommario):
Handwriting is the most fundamental expressive activity in learning. To utilize the intuitiveness and the nature of handwriting, digital pen technology has emerged to capture and transfer notes. We developed AirTransNote, a student note-sharing system that facilitates collaborative and interactive learning in conventional classrooms. A teacher can use the AirTransNote system to share student notes with the class on a projected screen immediately to enhance the group learning experience. However, to improve the effectiveness of sharing notes, the teacher must be able to select an effective note for sharing. This can be difficult and time consuming during a lecture. Moreover, students should be encouraged to improve the presentation of their handwritten notes. Well-written notes are more accessible for other students and reduce irrelevant and careless mistakes. To facilitate learning improvements based on note sharing, we require a method to estimate the neatness of a note automatically. If a method is established, the teacher can easily select effective notes. Furthermore, this method can help provide feedback to the student to improve their writing. We examined 14 basic features from handwritten notes by considering correlation coefficients and found that the variance of pen speed, angular point average, and pen speed average were the significant features for evaluating the neatness of handwritten notes.

Abstract (sommario):
The Chilean construction market has grown considerably in recent years. This progress has generated strong competition among companies, which has forced a constant search for new strategies to generate a continuous improvement of their processes, to achieve better overall results. Among strategies for continuous improvement, it is possible to find tools such as Benchmarking, which involves knowing your own and your competitors’ performance, to meet the gaps. This research is aimed to develop a methodology for evaluating management practices of construction companies based on interviews which could be used as complement of the previous one developed by the Production Management Centre of the Catholic University of Chile at 2014, which was based on questionnaires. Research methodology consists of a literature review, revision of data collected during previous Benchmarking, definition of criteria to be considered in the new methodology and finally developing a questionnaire to interview managers or department heads to visualize how companies manage aspects such as production planning and scheduling, suppliers and innovation, among others. This is related to previous methodologies used to evaluate management practices worldwide in areas such as education, retail, manufacturing and health. A pilot experience was carried out on two construction companies to assess performance of the new tool in terms of application form, evaluation form, practices evaluated, among others. The interviews were conducted with key positions in the management of the company in areas such as production, quality, suppliers and others. The application of the new methodology allowed to observe major organizational differences between both companies and to understand aspects related to the interviews, such as: time of application, validation questions used, selection of respondents, among others. Previous experience will be used to correct and improve possible mistakes to be used in the future.

Abstract (sommario):
Oral administration of medications to children requires age-appropriate dosage forms and strengths. In this study, we: (i) assessed the extent of oral dosage form manipulations, (ii) documented how it is carried out, and (iii) examined the attitudes and sources of information regarding the handling from healthcare professionals. Prospective reviews of electronic records, ward observations, and clinician surveys were performed at a paediatric neurology ward and a paediatric oncology ward in Sweden during April to May of 2018. Approximately 15% of oral medications were manipulated for the studied patient group (median age 12.9 years in oncology, 5.8 years in neurology) with approximately 30% of the patients having an enteral feeding tube. Manipulations were performed both to obtain an appropriate dose from, for example, a fraction of the original tablet or to obtain a powder that could be used to prepare a slurry for administration through enteral feeding tubes. Risks identified were related to patient safety such as cross contamination, suboptimal absorption/pharmacokinetics and inaccurate dose. When examining the working environment of nurses, we observed safe handling of hazardous substances but the nurses occasionally experienced stress and a fear of making mistakes due to absence of information. Paediatricians experienced a lack of time to search for proper information on manipulations. As a step towards improving safety in paediatric medication, we suggest the introduction of clinical pharmacists into the team and further evaluating the possibilities of using more ready-to-administer medications with necessary product information and pharmacovigilance support.

Abstract (sommario):
Background: A brain tumor is a mass of brain cells that grow abnormally. In radiological terms, a brain tumor is called a space occupying lesion (SOL) which generally means a lump. Radiologists or radiology specialists in identifying brain tumors will analyze the results of Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) Brain images with post-processing techniques using a menu in a 3D editor called the region growing technique. Methods:This type of research is a quasi-experimental research design using Posttest Only Without Control Group Design. The research plan will be carried out at Hermina Hospital Bekasi using 32 samples of brain tumor MRI images, the sample size is obtained by the sample size formula for two paired populations according to Sastroasmoro (2011). Bivariate data analysis, if the data is normally distributed (p value 0.05), then the Paired T-test statistical test is performed and if the data is not normally distributed (p value 0.05) the Wilcoxon statistical test is performed. Results: The results of the analysis of brain tumors are followed by manual measurement of tumor volume using the region growing technique. It requires sufficient expertise and experience so that the diagnosis of tumor volume is given precisely and accurately so that its handling can be carried out wisely Evaluation of MRI images requires high accuracy, but doctors can make mistakes because the diagnosis is still done manually, such as errors in diagnosing the location of the tumor and the size of the object. The very complex structure of the human brain also presents its own difficulties in identifying brain tumors. Subjective factors can also affect manual doctor evaluations such as fatigue and uncontrolled time in evaluating an MRI image so that a digital image processing program is needed that can be done with a computational machine to assist doctors in evaluating an MRI image automatically. The active contour method can solve the problem of topological changes in a brain tumor image. Conclusion: The active contour method is able to classify images with high accuracy. So that it can increase the accuracy of the segmentation process for easy and fast medical diagnosis. The calculation of the volume of brain tumors can be done using the binaryization method which has been segmented through the final image produced by the active contour method. Tumor segmentation and automatic tumor volume calculation have great potential in clinical treatment by freeing doctors from the burden of manual labeling, digital image processing of brain tumors using the active contour method can be used as a complement to the MRI modality that radiologists can use in calculating brain tumor mass volume calculations

Abstract (sommario):
Evaluating the efficacy and accuracy of clinical reasoning and distinguishing between complications and medical errors is a difficult task. However, it seems to be an even more difficult task to provide models for systematically reporting and reducing those errors through improvements in the entire web of healthcare delivery. The report “To Err Is Human: Building a Safer Health System” published in 1999 highlighted the importance of patient safety and proposed some interventions. However, a follow up by the authors of the report in 2005 stated that progress in matters of safer care delivery and improved communications was slow. The interventions proposed include “pay for performance” incentives, implementation of electronic health records, diffusion of safe practices and team training for full disclosure of medical errors to patients following injury. As patients increasingly are consumers, customers and regulatory actors in their own healthcare, it becomes harder to hide medical mistakes in clinical encounters. Explaining why and how the medical error happened, giving informed assurance that the mistake will be avoided in the future and offering sincere apologies to patients and families are skills that need to be taught to medical students as early as the undergraduate level. Those skills are very difficult to teach in the university environment and would be learned more effectively with years of experience. However, structured educational programs focusing in the necessity and components of a good medical error disclosure would improve awareness in the importance of an effective and honest doctor–patient relationship. In this review paper, we compare international literature and examples from Turkey with regard to disclosure of medical errors. The Turkish literature on malpractice cases is rich and most of them point out that medical errors occur because of heavy workloads, insufficient infrastructure and lack of high quality medical education. However, the lack of any papers on medical disclosure to patients in Turkey seems to point out to the big communication gap between patients and doctors, among other reasons. We will address some of the reasons for such lack in Turkey and present recommendations about how to disclose medical errors to patients such as implementation of electronic medical error disclosure systems, education and training, and legislation.

Abstract (sommario):
Highway engineers encounter numerous problems in the quality of rigid pavements; cracking types are the most critical ones. Thus, deciding on appropriate controlling measures represents an essential mission. Normally, cracking problems affect the quality of pavements as well as increase initial cost. Although experts can control and solve these problems by using their tacit knowledge, novice engineers cannot. Transfer of expertise from experts to novices is difficult pavements domain. Therefore, a system which experts could use to share their experience with other engineers both during and after a project is necessary. Without such transfer of expertise and knowledge, novices may repeat mistakes that experts have already learned to avoid. Documentation, classification, and computerization of these problems, their causes, treatments, and preventive actions can be very helpful in controlling and preventing them. This study aims to describe the development of a knowledge-based system that can be used by novice engineers to overcome cracking of rigid pavements. The system can also be used as an instructional tool for prospective highway engineers. In addition, the system can archive and organize raw knowledge from experts to be utilized by engineers who work in this field. Domain experts can use the system to share their experiences. The knowledge includes problems encountered in the domain, their causes, preventive actions, treatments, and their effects, which were presented in a classified format. The knowledge was presented in the form of rules and coded in software by using Visual Basic. The system was tested by different users involved in highway engineering, including experts and novice engineers. The mean values of the overall system evaluation by the four types of users based on the 5-point Likert scale were 4 and 4.5 respectively. These values reflect high level of satisfaction by end-users.

Abstract (sommario):
In Reply.— Dr Toews' thoughtful letter highlights an important assumption which we made in our analysis of costs of specific strategies in the evaluation of heart murmurs in children. The presumption is made that echocardiography is performed in a diagnostically definitive fashion so that diagnostic inaccuracies are not encountered in the echocardiography-first strategy. We agree that this presupposes the availability of echocardiographic equipment appropriate for use in infants and children, technical support staff with adequate training and ongoing experience, and experienced pediatric echocardiographers to interpret the images.

Abstract (sommario):
This paper presents an evaluation of the status and direction of toxic/hazardous waste reduction in the chemical and petrochemical industries from an international perspective. Pertinent approaches, experiences and trends are described. Industrial waste management has evolved from an “end-of-pipe” treatment mentality to source reduction as the preferred option. It is generally agreed that the Chemical/Petrochemical Industries generate more hazardous and toxic waste than any other industrial sector. Also because of the large quantities of materials and energy used by these industries, significant opportunities are available for waste reduction. In almost all cases costs savings have resulted, many of which are significant. The importance of pollution prevention by “clean technologies” instead of remediation, multi-media considerations and the significance of product life-cycle assessment in pollution prevention programs is stressed. Examples are provided which demonstrate, that a proactive approach by DOW, E.I. DuPONT, AMOCO, 3M Corp., CIBA-GEIGY and others is now becoming the norm. From an international policy perspective, important commonalities and differences in strategy and efforts for toxics/hazardous waste management exist. Much can be learned by the mistakes and solutions between cultures and countries. Much progress has been made in protection of public health and the environment - but much remains to be done. This paper is intended to provide a stimulus for discussion aimed at optimizing future waste minimization activities in the chemical and petrochemical industries.

Abstract (sommario):
Purpose This paper draws from more than 25 years of research with aspiring and practicing educational leaders to present six strategies for building a culture of feedback in schools, teams, districts, professional learning opportunities, and other educational settings. These strategies reflect key elements of the authors’ new, developmental approach to feedback. The paper aims to discuss these issues. Design/methodology/approach Through the lens of adult developmental theory, the authors highlight foundational learnings from open-ended survey research with 14 educational leaders about their experiences giving and receiving feedback, and prior qualitative, mixed-method, and longitudinal research with principals, assistant principals, teachers, superintendents, and other educational leaders. Findings The authors share six developmentally oriented strategies for establishing trust and building conditions for authentic, generative feedback: finding value in mistakes, modeling vulnerability, caring for the (inter)personal, clarifying expectations, sharing developmental ideas, and building an infrastructure for collaboration. Practical implications This work has implications for leadership and leadership preparation, especially given contemporary emphases on collaboration and high-stakes evaluations as tools for ongoing improvement, enhancing professional capital, and internal, individual, and system-wide capacity building. Originality/value Because a developmental perspective has been noticeably missing from the wider feedback literature and leadership preparation curricula, this work extends and enhances tenets from different fields (e.g. business, developmental psychology, educational leadership and educational leadership preparation), while also addressing urgent calls for educational reform; leadership preparation, development, and practice; and professional capital building.

Abstract (sommario):
In connection with the transfer of the educational process of higher educational institutions of Ukraine for the period of the national quarantine to the distance learning mode, scientific and pedagogical workers have encountered certain difficulties in the effective implementation of group exercises. In order to overcome these difficulties and avoid mistakes in the future, it became necessary to study the experience of preparing and conducting teachers of this type of training using distance learning technologies and formulating relevant technological and methodological recommendations. The possibilities of existing platforms that implement distance learning technologies are considered. The results of the analysis and generalization of the experience of preparing and conducting on-line group exercises by teachers of the Military-Law Institute of the Yaroslav Mudryi National Law University in a national quarantine are presented. Ways to increase their effectiveness are proposed. Technological and methodological recommendations on the preparation and conduct of this type of distance learning are formulated. The content of the distance course developed on the basis of the Moodle platform is justified for the preparation of cadets (students) for a group exercise, the requirements for the placement of educational literature in the environment of the Moodle system. A rational methodology for preparing for the lesson is determined. The possibilities of Zoom online conference platform on the implementation of distance learning technologies in the educational process are shown. The technical requirements for the organization of the lesson are outlined. The content of the teacher’s presentation and the procedure for its demonstration are analyzed. The possibilities of attracting a second teacher to the lesson and using interactive teaching methods (key issues and working in small groups) to enhance the creative and cognitive activities of cadets (students) and also to increase the level of organization of the lesson are considered. The criteria for evaluating cadets (students) based on the results of a group exercise are determined.

Abstract (sommario):
IntroductionWe know the coexistence of traumatic factors (loss of affective relationships, experiences of abuse, extreme risk situations, etc.) is common in psychiatric pathologies in which level of stress experienced exceeds normal capacity of the person, favoring the appearance of dissociative or excision mechanisms. A common mistake is to pathologize them and try to eliminate them.ObjectivesThe objective of this paper is to study trauma and defense mechanisms involved, in order to carry out a better approach.MethodsA bibliographic search was performed from different database (Pubmed, TripDatabase) about trauma, mechanisms involved and the construction of identity.ResultsWe know neural pathways mature asymmetrically in evolutionary development (functions related to attention, concentration and executive function having special importance) and thus, traumas occurred in moments of greatest vulnerability such as early childhood, can damage and interfere with the correct integration of neural processes, producing disproportionate and unnecessarily maintained alert responses (common basis for many pathologies such as borderline personality disorder or traumatic psychosis). In response to this, reactive mechanisms are produced (such as dissociation or cleavage) that are not necessarily pathological and therefore, we should not always intervene by eliminating them because they often function as a protective factor, allowing to preserve functioning and favoring recovery.ConclusionsIn conclusion, we need a better understanding of mechanisms involved in trauma, executive function and the alarm system beyond anxiety reactions, trying to understand the function of symptom without eliminating it, but evaluating whether there are healthier alternatives can be promoted for the complete recovery of the patient.DisclosureNo significant relationships.

Abstract (sommario):
Students were expected to employ self-regulated learning (SRL) skills to take control of their learning in computer-mediated learning environments during emergency remote teaching (ERT). Considering its importance, it is a must to foster SRL through various practices in English writing classes. Peer feedback is practical in that it enables students to monitor their writing, foster SRL skills, and facilitate learning. Therefore, the study aimed to explore the impact of computer-mediated anonymous peer feedback on students’ SRL skills and find out students’ experiences of giving and receiving feedback. Employing a quasi-experimental design, the study used an online SRL scale and reflective journals for data collection from preparatory school students. The data were analyzed using paired samples t-test and coding of the reflective journals. Results demonstrated that computer-mediated anonymous peer feedback significantly improved the SRL skills of students. Moreover, students stated that reviewing peers’ papers and making self-evaluations helped them improve their linguistic performance. However, it was found challenging to trust the provided feedback. Students also felt anxious about offending classmates or giving inaccurate feedback, embarrassed of making mistakes, and exhausted from reviewing papers. Along with these negative feelings, they also reported positive emotions such as self-confidence and enthusiasm. The results emphasize that computer-mediated anonymous peer feedback can be incorporated into English writing courses, especially in online settings. Future studies should investigate how computer-mediated anonymous peer feedback affects students’ writing performance and SRL skills in different modes of instruction among different student populations.

Abstract (sommario):
The 11 March 2011 tsunami was probably the fourth largest in the past 100 years and killed over 15 000 people. The magnitude of the design tsunami triggering earthquake affecting this region of Japan had been grossly underestimated, and the tsunami hit the Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear power plant (NPP), causing the third most severe accident in an NPP ever. Interestingly, while the Onagawa NPP was also hit by a tsunami of approximately the same height as Dai-ichi, it survived the event ‘remarkably undamaged’. We explain what has been referred to as the cascade of engineering and regulatory failures that led to the Fukushima disaster. One, insufficient attention had been given to evidence of large tsunamis inundating the region earlier, to Japanese research suggestive that large earthquakes could occur anywhere along a subduction zone, and to new research on mega-thrusts since Boxing Day 2004. Two, there were unexplainably different design conditions for NPPs at close distances from each other. Three, the hazard analysis to calculate the maximum probable tsunami at Dai-ichi appeared to have had methodological mistakes, which almost nobody experienced in tsunami engineering would have made. Four, there were substantial inadequacies in the Japan nuclear regulatory structure. The Fukushima accident was preventable, if international best practices and standards had been followed, if there had been international reviews, and had common sense prevailed in the interpretation of pre-existing geological and hydrodynamic findings. Formal standards are needed for evaluating the tsunami vulnerability of NPPs, for specific training of engineers and scientists who perform tsunami computations for emergency preparedness or critical facilities, as well as for regulators who review safety studies.

Cook, Julie, Sarah Fries e Jennifer Lynes. "Checking Our Blind Spots: The Most Common Mistakes Made by Social Marketers". Social Marketing Quarterly 26, n. 1 (5 febbraio 2020): 14–27. http://dx.doi.org/10.1177/1524500420903016.

Abstract (sommario):
Background: The work of social marketers and the environment in which they work is complex, which inevitably results in mistakes being made and sometimes, the failure of a social marketing program. Unfortunately, social marketers do not often report their own mistakes. Even when failures or mistakes are reported, it is usually for the purpose of one study, as opposed to a wider understanding of mistakes made by social marketers in the field. This is a significant gap in the development of social marketing practice since understanding the nature of the most common mistakes made by social marketers could assist them in assessing their own shortcomings and potentially lead to more effective programs. Focus: This article is related to research and evaluation of the social marketing field. Research Question: What are the perceptions of social marketing experts regarding the most common mistakes made by social marketers? Importance to the Field: A greater understanding of the common mistakes made by social marketers will allow practitioners to assess their own shortcomings, improve program outcomes, and raise the status of the social marketing field. Methods: This research is qualitative and exploratory, with a constructivist, grounded theory methodology. In-depth interviews with 17 social marketing experts were conducted. Experts were purposefully chosen based on a set of criteria including the number of years of experience they had in the field. Results: The interviews revealed nine mistake categories: inadequate research, poor strategy development, ad hoc approaches to programs, mismanagement of stakeholders, poorly designed program objectives, weak evaluation and monitoring, poor execution of pilots, inadequate segmentation and targeting, and poor documentation. Additionally, the interviews revealed two other emergent, crosscutting themes that affect the mistakes being made: external influences that the social marketer may not have direct control over and the social marketer’s own preconceptions that they bring to the program. Recommendations for Research or Practice: Future research may explore (1) the extent to which external influences lead to social marketing program success or failure, particularly in comparison to mistakes made by social marketers and (2) perspectives from the social marketing community as to the most common mistakes made by social marketers. Social marketers may consider being more reflexive in their work, including reporting their own mistakes and failed programs, as well as challenging the biases they may bring to the work that they do. Limitations: The sample size is small and therefore not generalizable to all social marketing experts or the social marketing community. Also, there are many parts of the world in which social marketers practice, but which are not represented by the social marketing experts. Additionally, the “mistakes” listed are based on opinion as opposed to direct observation, which may make them more susceptible to bias.

Abstract (sommario):
During various marine container handling operations, performed mainly in larger-scale container terminals, containers get damaged regularly. Our previous studies showed that each physical impact results in some form of physical deformation of the backbone structure. Even at low accelerations, the spreaders of the quay cranes impact the containers with enough force to substantially bend the metal parts of the corners of the containers, when additional hooking procedures are required. This means that the first time resulted in the metal rods hitting the metal frame with an average 15-ton mass at the average speed of 1.7 m/s. The metal rods of the hooking mechanisms’ impact areas of the containers are structurally important, and each impact surely damages the containers, diminishing their total operational time. We have already proposed the Impacts Detection Methodology (IDM) and its application system, tested in Klaipeda City port, and it proved to be efficient in real-time operations, detecting concurrent impacts with each new handling cycle. In this paper, we provide a summarisation of a larger number of detections using the IDM, and as a result of this analysis, we have detected that more impact events happen when containers are taken from the upper parts of the ship, in comparison to the ones taken from the shafts. Results suggest that more critical events occur due to operator actions and experiences working with the machinery, yet the same operators tend to make fewer impact mistakes taking the containers from the shafts as the vertical cell guides tend to direct the movements and lower the levels of the natural sway of the spreader inside closed environments. This surely damages the metal infrastructure of the shafts, as seen in our previous study, but minimizes the chances of secondary impacts occurring during hooking.

To the Editor.— I read with the recent article by Danford et al regarding "cost assessment of heart murmur evaluation." I agree completely with the authors that echocardiographic evaluation of heart murmurs is more costly than referral to a pediatric cardiologist. In this study, the authors utilized echocardiograms ordered at their own institution, presumably performed by technicians trained and experienced in the evaluation of children for congenital heart disease, and interpreted by pediatric cardiologists trained and experienced in interpretation of pediatric echocardiograms.
