Abstract (sommario):
Finance and accounting are an area that are many unethical activities could be happen especially in this fourth industrial revolution today. In this study, we analyze the impact among the dispositional affect (positive affect and negative affect), gender, age, educational background, work experience to ethical lapses behavior. Dispositional affect is divided into four states which are the enthusiastic, the happiness, the frustration, and the fear. We find that disspositional affect, age, education background, work experience and gender are not significantly influences the ethical lapses behavior. Enthusiastic and happy people will try to avoid doing ethical lapses even from their superior’s behest because they have genuinely positive achieve goals and nobel expectations into their job. Negative affect of frustration and fear also have no significant influence to the ethical lapses behavior. The ambiguity of situations that tend to be uncertain and unpredictable can cause anxiety in other psychological cases. The frustation and fear make people tend to aware and protect themselves from bad consequence of ethical lapses. Other than variable educational background, age, work experience, negative affect of frustrated and negative affect of fear have highly significant correlation. The implications from this study for practice and research are also provided.

Abstract (sommario):
This essay is in response to Thomas Crosbie and Meredith Kleykamp’s article that investigates relationships between what they consider to be three fault lines in the American military profession: ethical lapses, expertise, and identity. As they explore the literature to contemplate how professionalism might help to prevent ethical lapses, they also seek to reveal relationships between lapses, military expertise, and identity. To enhance the relevance of their research, it is recommended that they examine ethical lapses more broadly. Their core subject is American civil–military relations, which is a complex, contentious, and often ambiguous topic. They can mitigate the ambiguity by developing a clear problem statement and a set of research assumptions. In addition, because not all lapses are treated the same, they can be categorized to identify more serious lapses, which will allow for a focused examination of institutional responses to the lapses. Also, integrating other academic approaches such as political science and history into their research will improve the theoretical and explanatory power of their investigation. Adopting these and other aspects of inquiry will support the testing of their six hypotheses and improve our understanding of the military profession.

Abstract (sommario):
In a recent issue of this journal, we published an article titled “Fault Lines of the American Military Profession”. Donald S. Travis subsequently wrote a Dipustatio Sine Fine rejoinder that raised a number of criticisms of our piece and suggested several ways forward. For our part, we detect three serious problems in Travis’s analysis and offer a single syncretic response. Our solution builds on the insights of Travis’s critique while avoiding the pitfalls of his specific line of reasoning. We conclude by urging others to continue to debate and research these very consequential and timely issues.

Abstract (sommario):
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to assess if a firm’s ethical lapses, which result from unethical behavior or actions, influence its social disclosure (SD) practices as well as how ethical lapses affect both the firm’s legitimacy within society and its standing in financial markets. This study addresses two-related questions: do a firm’s ethical lapses undermine the credibility of its SD in financial markets, either directly or through a firm’s legitimacy? Do ethical lapses affect a firm’s market value and is this effect mediated by SD and legitimacy? Design/methodology/approach Three hypotheses are derived based on two theoretical approaches, information economics and institutional theory. The hypotheses lead ultimately to an examination of a firm’s legitimacy. Ethical lapses are inspired by the Global Reporting Initiative grid and by ISO 26000. Findings The results suggest that a firm’s ethical lapses underlie its SD practices and affect its legitimacy and standing in financial markets, the latter being proxied by financial analysts’ forecasts. Research limitations/implications The limitations of this study include that alternative ways exist to measure the constructs employed, the measurement of SD is subject to discretionary choices, and the North American sample results may not be generalizable to other countries. Originality/value The originality and contributions of this study are based on the use of information economics and institutional theory in a complementary way that recognizes information as serving various purposes and constituencies. Additionally, the paper extends prior research on the SD aspects of CSR by showing it matters to both financial markets and non-financial stakeholders.

Abstract (sommario):
There is much research that examines the connection between different elements of corporate governance to specific firm outcomes (Brahmana et al., 2021; Fakhfakh & Jarboui, 2022), including ethical outcomes (Veldman et al., 2023). However, little is written about how to prevent ethical lapses from ever happening. Using the framework of agency theory, this study examined the effect of the board of directors’ power and the chief executive officer’s (CEO’s) power on the firm’s ethical behaviors. We sought to find out if strong governance, whether CEO or Board, could play a role in stopping ethical lapses before they happen. To evaluate this relationship, two indices were used. The board power index included board size, non-duality, lead director, board composition, and ownership. The CEO power index included tenure, ownership, and board member nominations. The sample consisted of 102 large, public United States (U.S.) firms. Logistic regression was utilized to determine if board power or CEO power could influence ethical firm behaviors. The findings indicated that strong boards were associated with more ethical firms. CEO power did not seem to have the same relationship. These findings are important to help firms structure boards to increase vigilance and reduce the likelihood of ethical lapses.

Abstract (sommario):
On the first day after the mass murder, a qualitative content analysis was conducted on nine daily newspapers in Republic of Srpska and Serbia. It aimed to determine the existence of similarities in the reporting of daily newspapers in the two countries, compare the existing reporting with current media regulations and self-regulation, identify any violations, and provide recommendations for future, more ethical reporting, given that a number of ethical lapses were observed in the reporting. The analysis of this event has both scientific and societal justification because the event impacted all members of society, and one of the tasks of science is to provide concrete advice on how to report ethically, professionally, and in accordance with recommendations and existing norms. Ethical lapses in the media can have consequences during times of crisis, shock, disbelief, panic and concern, which were understandably triggered in the audience, given that an event of this nature had not been recorded in our societies before.

This study uses secondary data to examine Obiora’s education ethics vis-à-vis the higher education system in Nigeria. The discourse centered on government educational agencies such as the National Universities Commission (NUC); National Board for Technical Education (NBTE); National Commis-sion for Colleges of Education (NCCE) and Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) and their roles in the management of the educational system in Nigeria. The study further highlights the ethical lapses in the tertiary education system in Nigeria. The researcher suggests that, the government should encourage private ownership of tertiary institutions, while the government through its agencies supervises them.

Abstract (sommario):
Over the past decade, the American armed services have witnessed a near-constant stream of so-called ethical lapses. Spanning rank, specialty, and service, these “lapses” have given rise to a flood of criticism by journalists and piercing calls for reform from politicians. In response, American military leaders have pointed to the paired concepts of profession and professionalism as the solution. In this article, we use classical conceptualizations of the military profession to resituate the problem of ethical lapses as instead one of the three fault lines of the contemporary American military profession, unfolding alongside crises in military expertise and identity. The three fault lines reveal at once the large scale of the challenges facing the American armed services and our very limited social scientific understanding of those problems. We end by emphasizing the need for future research to establish an updated empirical baseline for theories of the military profession in America.

Abstract (sommario):
Background: Mentoring is crucial to the growth and development of mentors, mentees, and host organisations. Yet, the process of mentoring in surgery is poorly understood and increasingly mired in ethical concerns that compromise the quality of mentorship and prevent mentors, mentees, and host organisations from maximising its full potential. A systematic scoping review was undertaken to map the ethical issues in surgical mentoring to enhance understanding, assessment, and guidance on ethical conduct. Methods: Arksey and O’Malley’s methodological framework was used to guide a systematic scoping review involving articles published between January 1, 2000 and December 31, 2018 in PubMed, Embase, Scopus, ERIC, ScienceDirect, Mednar, and OpenGrey databases. Braun and Clarke’s thematic analysis approach was adopted to compare ethical issues in surgical mentoring across different settings, mentee and mentor populations, and host organisations. Results: A total of 3849 abstracts were identified, 464 full-text articles were retrieved, and 50 articles were included. The 3 themes concerned ethical lapses at the levels of mentor or mentee, mentoring relationships, and host organisation. Conclusions: Mentoring abuse in surgery involves lapses in conduct, understanding of roles and responsibilities, poor alignment of expectations, and a lack of clear standards of practice. It is only with better structuring of mentoring processes and effective support of host organisation tasked with providing timely, longitudinal, and holistic assessment and oversight will surgical mentoring overcome prevailing ethical concerns surrounding it.

Abstract (sommario):
This article argues for the importance of teaching for ethical reasoning.Much of our teaching is in vain if it is not applied to life in an ethical manner. The article reviews lapses in ethical reasoning and the great costs they have had for society. It proposes that ethical reasoning can be taught across the curriculum. It presents an eight-step model of ethical reasoning that can be applied to ethical challenges and illustrates its application. The eight steps range from recognizing there even is a situation to which to respond, to acting. It is argued that ethical behavior requires the completion of all eight steps. It further points to a source of frustration in the teaching and application of ethics: ethical drift. Finally it draws conclusions.

Abstract (sommario):
Ethical lapses seem to be at all-time highs, threatening company reputations and undermining consumer trust. Many sales associates feel forced into unethical behaviour. Ethics stress increases turnover, burnout and fatigue, and it decreases employee satisfaction. What if ethical sales practices could create value through increased sales, higher customer satisfaction and retention, more referrals and improved well-being for employees? Research shows companies need not sacrifice profits for ethics. In fact, companies with higher ethical standards experience greater customer loyalty, satisfaction and referrals. This article highlights key research findings and provides practical suggestions for creating an ethical culture.

Given the money, prestige and power at stake in high-level sports, ethical lapses are hardly surprising. Nor are the rules, people, and organizations we entrust to punish infractions and ensure fair play. Similarly, the high stakes involved in medical education invite ethical slips. Yet, there are not only few referees in this all-important “game,” but also the subject itself has been almost entirely off-limits in the academic literature.

Abstract (sommario):
This study embraces how teacher performs duty under the institutional rules and regulation in the course of their professional life. The unpunctuality in duty, mistreating to students, poor dedication in responsibility, lack of collaboration among professionals misleads to teacher to accomplish their responsibility and hence undergoes to rupture an ethics of teaching profession. The main aim of this study is to explore the lived experience of children about the behavior of teacher in the classroom activity. The five students of different level representing diversified characteristics were purposively selected and interviewed through semi structure interview guidelines in their natural setting. The interview responses were transcribed as verbatim and analyzed by extracting theme within theoretical framework based upon post structuralism and discourse analysis. In the students' narratives more than five themes were identified from the discussion regarding with ethical lapses of teacher in the class room. The study explored punctuality, professional identity, social acceptance, accountability, discriminatory behavior in the classroom. Such type of lapses cannot contribute to effective teaching learning environment. And hence learning performance of children is residing back to the expected goal. This study result can become way out to set up strategies for making ideal teacher. The teacher also knows about their responsibility to be carried out in the line of student development.

Abstract (sommario):
In the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, countries across the globe undertook several stringent movement restrictions to prevent the virus spread. In April 2020, around 3.9 billion people in 90 countries were contained in their homes. Discourse on the ethical questions raised by such restrictions while historically rich is absent when it comes to pragmatic policy considerations by the decision-makers. Drawing from the existing literature, we present a unified ethical principles–pragmatic considerations–policy indicators framework flexibly applicable across different countries and contexts to assess the ethical soundness of movement-restricting policies. Our framework consolidates 11 unique but related ethical principles (harm, justifiability, proportionality, least restrictive means, utility efficiency, reciprocity, transparency, relevance, equity, accountability, and cost and feasibility). We mapped each ethical principle to answerable questions or pragmatic considerations to subsequently generate 34 policy indicators. These policy indicators can help policymakers and health practitioners to decide the ethically substantiated initiation of movement restrictions, monitor progress and systematically evaluate the imposed restrictions. As an example, we applied the framework to evaluate the first two phases of the largest lockdown (March–May 2020) implemented nationwide in India for its adherence to ethical principles. The policy indicators revealed ethical lapses in proportionality, utility efficiency and accountability for India’s lockdown that should be focused on in subsequent restrictions. The framework possesses value towards ensuring that movement-restrictive public health interventions across different parts of the world in the ongoing pandemic and possible future outbreaks are ethically sound.

AbstractThe growing concern for ethics in applied linguistics may be attributed to attempts to stem the rising incidence of ethical lapses in order to ensure that the core ethical principles of (1) respect for persons, (2) yielding optimal benefits while minimizing harm, and (3) justice are preserved. Following a brief historical review of this topic, and building on the growing commitment to carry out ethical applied linguistic research, we map out seven research tasks that will enhance our understanding of how to extend this expanding research agenda. By inviting applied linguists to evaluate their methodological practices and those of their peers, we also argue for the need to develop the ethical dispositions of emerging applied linguists, with a view to create a more robust field.

Abstract (sommario):
Despite the growing professional and academic interest in sustainability and corporate social responsibility (CSR) in recent decades, moral lapses continue to happen in the business arena. Because undergraduate students will be the managers and professionals of the future, training these students to be socially responsible is seen as critically relevant for reducing the likelihood of such moral lapses. However, the question of whether CSR courses can be effective is still debated and little is known about the role that gender may play in this relationship. This study analyzed data from 97 undergraduate students enrolled in a CSR course at a Spanish state university. These data were collected twice, (1) a week before the course had started and (2) a week after the course had been completed. The general lineal modelling (GLM) (repeated measures) procedure in SPSS revealed that CSR courses enhance students’ ethical decision-making. More importantly, the positive impact of these courses is stronger for female students than for male students. Thus, this study demonstrates the positive impact of corporate social responsibility courses on students’ ethical decision making, and sheds light on the target (female students) on which these courses is most effective.

Abstract (sommario):
In the current era, news stories that utilize private chat records from social media as source material have attracted a substantial audience. However, there has been public debate regarding whether this practice breaches individual privacy management primarily and crosses the boundaries of journalistic ethics. This paper investigates the phenomenon of using private chat records from social media as news material, and its impact on personal privacy management and the boundaries of journalistic ethics. Specifically, the study focuses on how this practice disrupts the privacy management of chat record subjects, particularly in terms of boundary linkage, boundary permeability, and boundary ownership, thereby leading to issues of journalistic ethical lapses. The aim of the research is to propose methods for regulating journalistic practices and promoting the establishment of a "right to be forgotten" for social media users, in order to standardize journalistic boundaries, achieve boundary coordination, and reshape journalistic ethics. The main methodology of this paper is case analysis, complemented by literature review. The article employs Communication Privacy Management Theory as its theoretical framework and analyzes relevant journalistic cases. This paper finds that by standardizing the way journalists use news materials and promoting the establishment of the "Right to be Forgotten" for social media users, it is possible to regulate their news boundaries, achieve boundary coordination, and reshape their journalistic ethics.

Abstract (sommario):
Beginning in 2002, Wells Fargo began opening fraudulent accounts for unsuspecting customers. Stakeholders at every level either participated in, ignored, or tolerated the bank’s behavior that defrauded consumers on a massive scale. These unethical and well-documented schemes spanned more than a decade. Using public sources, this case recounts the events and ethical lapses that unfolded over the multiyear investigation of the Wells Fargo fraudulent accounts scandal and illuminates the general systemic failures of corporate culture and governance, public regulation, and market responses to promote ethical business practices. This case provides the opportunity to consider what means for fostering ethical conduct might exist if a corporation can be big enough and rich enough that civil, criminal, regulatory, and market forces cannot deter unethical corporate practices, and if the market does not punish the corporation for a culture that promotes fraud.

Abstract (sommario):
Historically, ethical issues in science have disappeared behind the veil which alleges that science is self-correcting because of its reliance on secret peer review. Unfortunately, that same peer review process has closed scientific journals to scientists holding to different ethical standards, while access to the law and courts has been a prohibitively expensive mechanism to protest unethical actions. Although eager to sensationalize ethical lapses, news media have been ineffective in correcting the problems. As a result, dissension has been left exclusively to lay activists. Against this background, in the 1995 AIBS symposium, “Ethics, Science, and Public Policy,” Bella described scientific publications as “propaganda” and Mattson discussed the fact that unbiased science cannot exist within government agencies. However, with the sudden rise of the World Wide Web, scientific societies have lost control of publication, and legal confidentiality has disappeared, because the Web now provides outlets for dissenting views and the opportunity to bring corruption in science to public attention. Thus placed under public scrutiny, the scientific community must confront an urgent need to examine its ethical standards.

Abstract (sommario):
Medical science’s advancements depend on preserving its credibility and the public trust, though as a human institution it is fallible and liable to ethical breaches that can void public confidence and support. There is no more egregious ethical departure than deviations / violations of Human Research Subjects Protections (i.e., non-compliance), which is remarkable given they are fairly widespread and often repeated. Once uncovered, this generally should result in the research’s suspension or termination. Yet, there is a third option to preserve valuable and worthy research that went awry due to lapses in Human Research Subjects Protections, specifically, Remediation. Due to the sequestered nature of Remediation, little has been reported on its processes, and practically nothing, regarding practical considerations, recommendations, and implications for the remediation workers themselves—for this line of work is perilously risky. This commentary reports some of those best-practices, “first-hand grittier in-the-trenches” informed practical lessons learned. Implications are discussed in the interest of improving the reasonable, balanced, and competent ethical conduct of research, addressing / avoiding Human Subjects Protections ethical non-compliance, and avenues for further inquiry regarding Remediation.

Abstract (sommario):
In addition to the physical and emotional challenges faced by law enforcement professionals, the job confronts officers with numerous moral risks. The moral risks include moral distress, moral injury, ethical exhaustion, compassion fatigue, and practices that lead to lapses in ethical decision-making. The paper focuses on what police agencies can do to better address the moral risks of policing. These moral risks are central to officer wellness and, thus, a crucial component of officers’ operational readiness. Strategies are presented that will improve prevention efforts, including recruiting and hiring, training, supervision, and promotional practices. Additionally, the paper offers recommendations for effective approaches to intervention with officers who have displayed the effects of these moral risks. Finally, the paper highlights the kind of law enforcement leaders who are best able to implement strategies designed to prevent negative outcomes associated with the moral risks of policing.

Abstract (sommario):
This comprehensive review delves into the pivotal role of ethical practices in accounting, specifically focusing on corporate governance and compliance trends. Ethical considerations in accounting are not merely regulatory checkboxes but constitute the moral compass guiding financial professionals towards transparency, integrity, and accountability. The review provides a glimpse into the core themes explored in this review. The contemporary business landscape is marked by increased scrutiny of ethical practices within accounting frameworks. This review navigates the intricate interplay between ethical considerations, corporate governance structures, and compliance trends that collectively shape the ethical fabric of financial reporting. Examining corporate governance practices reveals their intrinsic link to ethical conduct in accounting. Effective governance structures serve as bulwarks against financial improprieties, fostering a culture of responsibility and ethical decision-making. The review scrutinizes evolving corporate governance models, their impact on financial transparency, and the role they play in mitigating risks associated with unethical accounting practices. Compliance trends, both globally and regionally, are explored to understand the ever-evolving regulatory landscape. Stringent compliance requirements act as safeguards, ensuring adherence to ethical standards. This review investigates how organizations navigate the complex web of regulatory frameworks, emphasizing the importance of proactive compliance measures in upholding ethical standards and fortifying the trust of stakeholders. Ethical considerations are not confined to regulatory frameworks; they permeate the organizational ethos, influencing decision-making at every level. The review delves into case studies and real-world examples to illustrate the tangible consequences of ethical lapses, emphasizing the need for a robust ethical foundation in accounting practices. In conclusion, the review underscores the indispensable role of ethical practices in accounting, illuminating the symbiotic relationship between corporate governance, compliance trends, and ethical conduct. Abstract (sommario):
Holistic ethics education in the professions is never fully served by a reliance on regulatory compliance alone. Data obtained from penalties due to corporate non-compliance in specific professions rarely describe the underlying ethical failures that are the foundation for “rule-breaking” in the professions. However, “violations” data may serve as a springboard for an educational discussion and approach that helps professionals (and those studying to become professionals) to understand the basic moral reasoning that underlies the “good” that is served by adhering to professional Codes of Conduct, Codes of Practice, Codes of Ethics, and the professional regulatory environment. We here use data obtained from the US FDA, US DOJ, and from Violations Tracker and compare these data with the IFPMA (International Federation of Pharmaceutical Manufacturing Association) Ethos and guiding principles. These side-by-side linkages serve as a mechanism to help students assess which ethical principles are at the core of each such violation in the pharmaceutical industry. We further recommend that this approach be incorporated into ethics education, especially beginning at the undergraduate level, as prophylaxis to ethical lapses in later professional life.

Abstract (sommario):
This Editors' Forum – ‘Made in China: Implications of Chinese Product Recalls’ – presents four perspectives on Chinese product recalls: supply chain management, moral degradation or the decline of traditional business ethics, evidence based management and free riding on the ‘Made in China’ brand. Extended supply chains and uncertain ethical standards almost certainly contribute to lapses in product quality as do cost pressures facing most Chinese firms. Product quality issues, moreover, will be most significant for goods posing hidden risks to health and safety, such as food and toys, and less significant for goods like computers and consumer electronics whose conformity to specifications can be readily monitored.

Abstract (sommario):
This article demonstrates how Aristotle’s political and ethical thought serves as a unique lens to understand character development and the Air Force’s core values. This article first moves to show that because the moral lapses occurring in the Air Force were seeen as stemming from character flaws, a program of character development like Aristotle’s would offer ideas superior to value-systems that emphasize rule following. This essay then looks to Aristotle to provide conceptual content for the ideas of character, character development, and each of the Air Force core values of integrity, service before self, and excellence—which also translates from the Greek as “virtue”—in all we do.

Abstract (sommario):
Purpose Employee turnover, building a positive corporate image and ethical lapses in the corporate world demand business leaders to perform their jobs with a higher sense of responsibility. This study aims to investigate the mediating effect of ethical climate and corporate image by using the corporate social responsibility theory and social identity theory. Design/methodology/approach A sample of 280 employees from the banking sector of Pakistan was collected through a questionnaire-based survey by using the convenience sampling technique. The structural equation modeling technique using Smart partial least square was used to test the hypothesized model. Findings The findings of the study affirmed a significant positive correlation between responsible leadership and ethical climate and ethical climate is significantly positively correlated with corporate image. Meanwhile, the corporate image is negatively correlated with employees’ turnover intention. Results further corroborate ethical climate mediating effect between responsible leadership and corporate image and corporate image likewise mediates between ethical climate and employee turnover intention. Research limitations/implications This study enriches the present literature on the subject of responsible leadership, ethical climate, corporate image and turnover intention from the employee’s point of view. Elucidating from previous studies, most of the investigations about the corporate image was conducted from the customers’ perspective and there has been a scarcity of studies focusing on employees’ perspective. Practical implications This study guides a value proposition that is concerned with the turnover of employees for human resource professionals from the banking industry. It explores a new dimension of the debate on employee turnover intention. Originality/value This study marks the first step toward corporate image as an organizational behavior construct by demonstrating that corporate image impact turnover intention. This study tests a model that demonstrates the role of ethical climate and corporate image in the linkage between responsible leadership and employees’ turnover intention.

Abstract (sommario):
The accounting profession is in a state of flux— some might even say crisis. Recent ethical lapses, such as the Enron debacle, have called into question the professionalism of a few, tainting the reputation of many accountants. In this study, we examined the attitudes of accounting students at a comprehensive public university at the beginning and end of the curriculum. Results showed that both groups are motivated to become accountants by the desire to make money rather than by a desire to serve the public. We discuss advising implications of these attitudes, pointing out actions faculty and professional advisors can take to influence students' reasons for entering the accounting profession. Relative emphasis: * practice, theory, research

Abstract (sommario):
Research plays a pivotal role in the progress of inventions in medicines and medical technology. It is noticed that researchers from developing world or multinational companies are interested to conduct their research studies in developing countries, in doing so sometimes it is noticed that rather benefiting the participants it causes significant harm to the research study participants of developing countries. Ethical lapses in research can significantly harm human subjects. In research ethics the basic aim of ethics is distinguishing between right and wrong, to recognize the wrong doings and try to avoid them from harming research subjects in any research study whether that is done in developing country or developed country. It must follow the principle of non malefiecence or do no harm. DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.3329/bioethics.v3i3.12559 Bangladesh Journal of Bioethics 2012; 3(3):12-15

Abstract (sommario):
Since 2013, with the expansion of Institutional Bioethics Committees (IBCs), the ethical review and management of research on human subjects has greatly increased throughout South Korea. During this same time, a number of ethical lapses, including certain researchers failing to comply fully with the law or making false statements on their IBC applications, have attracted media attention. Although these scandals have helped to highlight the importance of ethical guidelines in research on human subjects, they have been quickly forgotten and have not led to any lasting changes or solutions. In order to prevent these incidents from occurring, new policy proposals are needed. Among these should be a plan to improve the IBC review/approval process in order to ensure that all research-related activities, from the beginning to the end of the research cycle, follow proper guidelines. Toward that goal, this article examines, and makes recommendations concerning the IBC review/approval process, which is the starting point of responsible research. Th article examines the purpose and limitations of the Bioethics and Safety Act, reviews domestic and foreign laws and policies on IBC review duties, with a focus on 45CFR46 in the US, and fi suggests measures that could be adopted to better manage IBC non-compliance in Korea. On this last point, this article makes three recommendations: (1) a preventative measure for strengthening IBC education and related capacities through an IBC governance organization; (2) a measure to link and activate existing policies for research funding at academic institutions; and (3) a measure for registering and sharing research and IBC approval information.

Abstract (sommario):
The accounting scandals at the beginning of the 21st century led to public distrust and demands for reform. Were these scandals unexpected? From an old institutional economics (OIE) perspective, which originated with the work of Thorstein Veblen in the 1890s, these failures and the moral lapses should not be a surprise. OIE theorists, like critical theorists, generally, contend that corporate hegemony, i.e., the domination of business values in all areas of human life, has eroded moral sensitivities. All institutions, including our once-autonomous educational institutions, have become mechanisms for promoting economic interests. We first present a brief overview of institutional theory, to provide a theoretical framework for our subsequent experimental analysis. We discuss the concept of corporate hegemony and explain how hegemony impacts higher education, generally. We then examine efforts to commodify higher education and explain how that impacts all students in universities in the United States. Finally, we discuss the effect of commodification on accounting education to explain why we posit that our current accounting educational environment should be expected to desensitize students to the ethical aspects of their profession. This theoretical framework provides the basis for three hypotheses that we test in an experimental context to determine if accounting education desensitizes students to the moral aspects of their discipline. The experiment utilizes a capital budgeting context, which incorporates financial, social, and environmental factors. Subjects ranked and provided perceptions on eight alternatives as to their economic and moral content. Three groups of students, with differing levels of accounting knowledge, participated in the experiment. We develop hypotheses based on institutional theory and test those hypotheses in the latter part of this paper. Our results suggest that accounting education needs reform, so that accounting students become more aware of the ethical dimensions of our discipline.

Abstract (sommario):
Academic integrity is the basis of an education system and must be taught as an ethical behavior during academic training. Students who reflect honesty and truthfulness during the academic years are more likely to follow this path, develop professional integrity, and thus become responsible and dependable professionals. Here, we determine the prevalence of academic lapses among medical students by a cross-sectional descriptive survey based on a self-assessment questionnaire. Students’ perception of 37 behaviors comprising five domains, plagiarism, indolence, cheating, disruptive behavior, and falsifying data, were explored. A high percentage of students (83%) indicated that all 37 behaviors constitute misconduct. Approximately 65% of students thought that their fellow students were involved in dishonest behaviors, and 34% answered that they were indulged in some form of misconduct. Content analysis identified some prevalent behaviors such as doing work for another student (82.5%), getting information from the students who already took the exam (82.5%), copying the answer from neighbors (79%), and marking attendance for absent friends (74.5%). Multiple regression analysis points out that future indulgence in a behavior is significantly ( p ≤ 0.5 ) correlated with understanding a behavior as wrong, perceiving that others do it and whether one has already indulged in it. This study can serve as a diagnostic tool to analyze the prevalence of misconduct and a foothold to develop the medical school system’s ethical guidelines.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract The current opioid crisis in the United States has emerged from higher demand for and prescribing of opioids as chronic pain medication, leading to massive diversion into illicit markets. A peculiar tragedy is that many health professionals prescribed opioids in a misguided response to legitimate concerns that pain was undertreated. The crisis grew not only from overprescribing, but also from other sources, including insufficient research into nonopioid pain management, ethical lapses in corporate marketing, historical stigmas directed against people who use drugs, and failures to deploy evidence-based therapies for opioid addiction and to comprehend the limitations of supply-side regulatory approaches. Restricting opioid prescribing perversely accelerated narco-trafficking of heroin and fentanyl with consequent increases in opioid overdose mortality As injection replaced oral consumption, outbreaks of hepatitis B and C virus and human immunodeficiency virus infections have resulted. This viewpoint explores the origins of the crisis and directions needed for effective mitigation.

Abstract (sommario):
The tragic failure of Penn State University to effectively respond to years of child sex abuse perpetrated by Jerry Sandusky was both a breakdown of leaders and of leadership systems. Numerous individual leaders at Penn State had the knowledge, power, and interpersonal influence to effectively intervene in support of Jerry Sandusky's victims. However, fully understanding how this tragedy occurred also requires an examination of the organizational system of leadership that enabled each leader to rationalize the cover up of the sexual abuse of children. Alderfer's (2011) laws of embedded intergroup relations are useful for understanding the organizational dysfunction at Penn State; especially when those laws are integrated with other theories of organizational psychology, including the social identity maintenance theory of groupthink, the romance of leadership, and authentic leadership. The integration of these theories suggests specific strategies and tactics for preventing similar lapses of ethical behavior in the future through the development of leaders and leadership systems.
