The aim of this study is to develop an essentialist theory without possible worlds. We claim that ordinary objects are complex entities composed of entities that are more basic like pieces of matter and instantiated properties. The possible constituents are determined by reality and mind- and language-independent, the constitution, however, is conventional dependent on our conceptual scheme and our naming practices. In consequence, we develop an Aristotelian theory of ordinary objects as complexes of their essences and the matter which instantiates these essences. We apply this conception of objects in order to modify the direct reference theory. In the resulting theory, the meanings of proper names are the essences of the bearers of the names. The theoretical frame of our investigation consists in a Platonist theory of properties according to which properties are integral parts of a complex reality connected with its concrete partand in which some properties can participate in causal relations. In accordance with this view, we present an actualist conception of modalities in which modalities obtain in virtue of second order relations between properties, in case of de re modalities in virtue of second order relations between objects essences and other properties.

Testo completoThe aim of this study is to determine the best adsorbent among several zeolites for removing thiophene from gasoline. Acidic faujasite zeolites (HFAU) are not suitable for this removal, since rapid condensation reactions of gasoline components may result from the presence of acidic sites. Such reactions would lead to the formation of bulky molecules which block the access of thiophene to the micropores. Adsorption of thiophene, diluted in n-heptane or in competition with an olefin or an aromatic, was studied on zeolites under their sodium form or partially exchanged with cesium. The advantage of these zeolites is that no reaction of condensation was observed. It was shown that the cesium exchange was in favor of the thiophene adsorption in the case of solutions with a high content in olefins. Moreover, for solutions which contain all of the competitors, the more the zeolite is basic the more the selectivity of adsorption is in favor of thiophene

Testo completoThe idea of ‘system’ is pervasive in our descriptions and in our projects. The impossibility to come up with a generally and scientifically valid definition of this idea touches the most profound features of the classical conceptualization, those that underlie the current languages, the grammars and the classical logic. These features are rigidly tied with the belief that what we know is what ‘really’ exists, such as we know it. But this belief is refuted by microphysics, where it appears that that we create our knowledge entirely, as much the ‘entities’ that we examine as the qualifications of these entities. The Method of Relativized Conceptualisation of M. Mugur-Schächter establishes that the processes of creation of knowledge are subjected to relativizations, and that making them explicit clarifies the involved significances and permit to dominate the finalities. It is surprising to perceive to what a point the relativizations required by the method winds up the ambiguities commonly tied up to the idea of system. But such a clarification requires first to bring into light the relativizations acting in the conceptual-factual genesis of such basic concepts as persistence, continuity, state or causality. It brings about the relativized redefinitions of the concepts oflaw of probability, of entropy and of complexity. The global result is called Relativised Systemic (RS). It possesses the character of a methodological infra-frame for the design of technical-scientific constructivist methods, specifically appropriate for particular domains of application, such as the Relativised System Engineering method (RSE), dedicated to the design of utilitarian artefacts

To study the development of Mentha piperita L. and the production of essential oil plants were cultivated in nutritive solution under several levels of P. Original Hoagland & Arnon (1950) no 2 nutritive solution were one of the treatments, and the other experimental levels were this nutritive solution with 50% of the original P concentration, and added with 50% P over the original concentration. The variables evaluated were number of leaves, steam length, dry mass several organs, leaf area, leaf area ratio, specific leaf area, net assimilatory rate, relative growth rate, leaf mass ratio, dry mass distribution. Essential oil yield and composition were also assessed. A randomized factorial design 3x5 were used, with there levels of phosphorus. for essential oil, a randomized 3x3 factorial design were used. Data analysis consisted in application of ANOVA followed by the Tukey test, using the level of significance of 5%. The crop factor was studied using regression analysis, except for essential oil yield and composition. Highest P levels, 91,5/183,0 mg L-1 resulted on significantly higher values for number of leaves, leaf area, leaf dry mass, total dry mass and content menthone. Plants cultivated under intermediate P levels, 57,5/115,0 mg L-1 had higher values for stem plus petiole dry mass, and content menthofuram. When submitted to the lower level of P, 28,7/57,5 mg L-1, root dry mass, steam dry mass, menthol, essential oil yield, menthyl acetate and pulegone content were highest. Physiological indexes as leaf area ratio, leaf mass ratio, dry mass distribution of plants cultivated under the intermediate P levels were higher than those found in the P level of 91,5/183 mg L-1. We concluded that the best period to crop this plant, aiming for a highest yield of essential oil, was 60 days after transplantation... (Complete abstract click electronic access below)

Testo completoThe present report makes a contribution to adapt Eurocode 5 for timber constructions using tropical hardwoods in tropical climate. This approach requests to well know the mechanical behavior in variable environment. In a first time, an experimental study is presented for decoupling postponed phenomena from a longitudinal four-point creep bending, under controlled climate on small samples by measuring upper and lower deflections. The result of this original experimental protocol allows separating and illustrating different phenomena met on creep evolution of timber beams: swelling-shrinkage effects, hygro-lock effect, orthotropic mechanosorption and viscoelasticity. In second time, longitudinal four-point creep bending tests were realised, in the scale of structure, in tropical atmosphere to Franceville in Gabon, in two tropical hardwoods: Moabi and Ozigo. The experimental device was led on three sites corresponding to three different climatic environments according to specific service classes of Eurocode 5: an atmosphere temporarily air-conditioned, a sheltered outside atmosphere and an outside atmosphere non-sheltered. The obtained results show that tropical wood have a deferred behaviour stressed by the strong variation of humidity for little significant temperature variations. To define new classes of service appropriated for the tropical atmospheres, it is important to characterize the diffusion process. Following this objective, a complete experimental device was led, in the scale of material, in order to determinate the sorption isotherms and diffusion parameters needed to study the mechano-sorptive behavior in real condition. In a last time, others tests of creep and relaxation, in the scale of material, were realized under controlled atmosphere, in the same species. This study, led in low and high relative humidity, shows that the creep is more significant for the wet beams and the recovery is more important when beams are dry. A modeling of the creep-recovery under low and high relative humidity is proposed and allows the determination of the viscoelastic parameters of the studied beams. At the end, a comparative study of creep coefficients, obtained on the laboratory samples and the beams in real environment, shows that the mechanic-sorptive effects are dominating, with an importance of longitudinal swelling-shrinkage effects, not insignificant in the scale of structure

Testo completoHerbivory is thought to depend on intrinsic plant resistance traits and negatively affect survival and growth of plants. Predators can depress herbivore populations and thereby indirectly limit the consumption of primary producers. The surrounding vegetation is also expected to modify the interactions between a focal plant, its herbivores and their natural enemies. The surrounding vegetation may disrupt the colonisation and the consumption of a focal plant by insect herbivores, providing associational resistance. Increasing diversity of neighbouring vegetation can decrease resource availability or enhance herbivores control by predators. By contrast, associational susceptibility may occur with higher levels of herbivory in a focal plant in more diverse plant communities. We tested 1) the effect of the neighbouring vegetation on the levels of herbivory on seedlings, 2) the indirect impact of predators on herbivores and subsequent herbivory, and 3) the interactions between surrounding vegetation, focal plants, herbivores and predators. We examined the damage caused by insect herbivores on three native broadleaved species. We then compared the importance of taxonomic similarity between seedlings and canopy tree species and the structure and composition of surrounding vegetation at both large- and small-scales. Birds are vertebrate predators likely to limit damage to plants and facilitate plant growth by consuming herbivorous insects. We estimated their effects by excluding them from focal plants, and compared their interactive effects with vegetation diversity or removal. The effects of surrounding vegetation and avian predation were also disentangled on concealed- vs. external-feeding guilds (predation sensitivity) and specialist- vs. generalist-insects.Surrounding vegetation of focal seedlings influences the abundance of insect herbivores and damage. Specialist insects (leaf miners) are affected by the understorey vegetation close to oak seedlings, decreasing with its presence or structural diversity. The damage caused by generalist insects depend on the large-scale composition of plant communities, and increase with tree species richness and cover or on conspecific forest habitats. Exclusion of insectivorous birds affects insect herbivory in a species-specific manner, and also greatly varies with forest habitats and presence of vegetation around focal plants. The indirect effect of bird predation on leaf damage is observed on seedlings beneath noncongeneric canopy trees. The removal of local surrounding vegetation affects the top-down effect of insectivorous birds on insect herbivores, according to their sensitivity to predation and the accessibility of preys. To conclude, our studies provide experimental evidences of interactive effects between bird predation and neighbouring vegetation on insect herbivores and levels of herbivory. These indirect effects are strongly related to the specialisation of herbivores and to their sensitivity to bird predation

Testo completoThe evolution of the strain-state of douglas fir-poplar glulam specimens is evaluated by analysis of the recorded pictures of a strained surface. The strain values are calculated from displacements of selected points, from digitalized images of the most strained surfaces of specimens aged during relative moisture cyclic conditions varying between 5% and 95%. No significant variations of maximum strain levels are revealed along the twelve 14-days drying-swelling cycles. These results are consistent with the gluebond integrity and stability of surrounding cracks, initialized during the first cycle

Testo completoIn order to reduce the amount of sulfur in commercialized gasoline, one of the most relevant processes is the selective HDS of FCC gasoline. Moreover, the gas recycling and the addition of new effluent resulting from biomass conversion will lead to the presence of oxygenated compounds in the refinery. The transformation of a model feed (2-methylthiophene : 2MT and 2,3-dimethylbut-2-ene : 23DMB2N) has been studied alone or in mixture with model oxygenated compounds such as CO or H2O in presence of Mo/Al2O3 catalyst promoted or not by cobalt or nickel. A mutual inhibiting effect between the 2MT and the 23DMB2N has been found with the CoMo/Al2O3 catalyst. A decrease of the HDS/Hydrogenation catalyst selectivity, the key parameter for a gasoline hydrotreatment, is observed with the increase of the HDS rate. The presence of oxygenated compounds (CO and H2O) inhibits the transformation of the sulfided and the olefinic compounds on the CoMo/Al2O3 catalyst. However, the CO impact is higher than the H2O one. In addition, no effect is observed with the NiMo/Al2O3 and Mo/Al2O3 catalysts. A negative impact is also observed when CO and H2O are added simultaneously. This effect corresponds to the inhibition induced by the CO which is not converted in CO2, following the water gas shift reaction. Finally, oxygenated compounds have no influence on the HDS/Hydrogenation catalysts selectivity. Theses experimental results have been confirmed by ab initio calculation and by a Langmuir-Hinshelwood kinetic model

Testo completoForest ecosystems are one of the main providers of terrestrial ecosystem services, whose functioning has already been altered by recent climate change. Increases in tree mortality rates have been highlighted in different biomes worldwide, as well as increases in the frequency of massive mortality events following droughts. However, tree mortality is a multi-causal process. It is difficult to quantify the importance of the different factors that can possibly lead to tree death, and particularly the importance of climate change in comparison with forest dynamics and competition-related effects, environmental or biotic factors. This thesis aims at assessing the drivers of background tree mortality, which is the mortality observed in a stand in the absence of extreme perturbation, for the main European tree species. We used data from the French forest inventory of the National Geographic Institute (IGN) and historic climate data from Météo-France spanning the years 1961 to 2015.First, we modelled background tree mortality for 43 tree species in order to identify the drivers of background tree mortality. We used 372.974 trees, including 7.312 dead trees surveyed between the years 2009 and 2015. We found that factors related with competition, tree development stage, stand structure and species composition and logging intensity explained 85% of the recent tree mortality. Environmental factors (soil and climate conditions) accounted for 9% of the total modelled mortality. Temperature increases and rainfall decreases since the period 1961 – 1987 had a significant effect on the mortality of 45% of the 43 species and explained in average 6% of the total modelled mortality.Secondly, we focused on the link between trees locations along temperature and rainfall gradients and their sensitivity to changes of temperature and rainfall. We found that, for 9 species out of 12, temperature increases and rainfall decreases effects were more important in areas with high mean temperature and low mean rainfall. These results show that climate change-related tree mortality could be exacerbated towards the species’ warm and dry edges. Finally, we sought to evaluate how climate change-related tree mortality varied along trees social statuses and sizes gradients. We found that suppressed trees were more sensitive to temperature increases than dominant trees. On the contrary, dominant trees, and particularly large dominant trees, appear to be more sensitive to rainfall decrease than suppressed trees. Overall, our results show that climate change-related tree mortality is globally more important for suppressed than dominant trees. We highlighted the existence of a link between recent temperature increases and rainfall decreased and observed tree mortality rates on around half of the species of the French forest. We also showed that these effects were exacerbated towards the warm and dry edges of the species ranges. Finally, we showed that these effects differed according to trees social statuses and development stages. These results allow us to better understand the impacts of climate change on French and European forest and to better anticipate their effects through the adaptation of silvicultural practices

During desulphurization of catalytic cracking gasoline (FCC), olefin hydrogenation has to be limited in order to avoid octane rating loss. The factors controlling the hydrogenation of some typical olefins from the FCC feed on sulfided catalysts NiMo/Al2O3, CoMo/Al2O3 and Mo/Al2O3 have been studied. Except on the NiMo/Al2O3 sulfided catalyst, the reactivity in hydrogenation of the olefins decreases with increasing substitution of their double bond. The reactivity of 3,3-dimethyl-1-butene differs significantly with the two promoters. Nickel strongly increases hydrogenation while cobalt favors isomerisation. Both have the same effect in hydrodesulphurization (HDS). The sulfided CoMo/Al2O3 catalyst is therefore the most efficient in HDS of FCC gasoline. A negative influence of H2S on the activity in hydrogenation was also found. The NiMo/Al2O3 sulfided catalyst is more sensitive to H2S than its counterpart CoMo/Al2O3. Finally, a Langmuir-Hinshelwood type reaction mechanism with heterolytic adsorption of dihydrogen recovers the obtained results

Testo completoFor wood industries, a better knowledge of material behaviour during machining became an obligation for economical and productive reasons : with equipment adapted to manufactures needs. Woodworking machinery and tools manufacturers, as well as their users, urgently require reliable information on the main factors influencing wood cutting and above all on the magnitude of the force required to separate a chip, i. E the cutting force and its variations in different cases. In fact, the control of cutting forces during wood machining is something absolutely essential : to estimate wood behaviour and surface quality; to work in respect of tool capability; to optimised cutting conditions. However, today, to estimate cutting forces, a factor remains difficult to take in consideration : the influence of wood species. The aim of this study is to approach the influence of "the wood species" factor on cutting forces involved during machining, to give more precision to the relation. These investigations deals with the study of fourteen exotics wood species in the 90-0 cutting process. The influence of mechanical characteristics generally described in the literature and involved in this cutting process (hardness, tenacity, compression and shearing parallel to the grain) was studied and some formulations was obtained which allowed to estimate more precisely strains involved and general behaviour of wood during machining (with an explanation of more than 80% of the variation of cutting forces). These mechanical characteristics seems to be an easy solution to understand the general mechanical behaviour of each wood species studied during machining. In addition of this work, another method was used to estimate easily and quickly cutting forces involved during machining : Chardin's pendulum. Results obtained are promising but give less precision than mechanical parameters. Finally, in the fourth part of this memory, an application of all these results to the methodology of the Couple Tool Material (COM) was realised, and allowed to give more precision in the estimation of good cutting conditions and in the optimisation of machining parameters

Testo completoIn the recent years, the use of polyolefin and especially Polyethylene are of economic interest resulting in a growing attention concerning the improvement of its properties of use, especially for automotive application. In this context, the reinforcement of its thermomechanical properties and the improvement of its barrier properties to different fuels over an extended temperature range constitute a major scientific and environmental challenge. In this study, we first decided to analyze the impact of silica particles and of an annealing at 125°C under air atmosphere on thermomechanical properties of a HDPE. The second area of research was focused on the improvement of its barrier properties to fuels by the addition of lamellar charges known for their high aspect ratio inducing a tortuosity effect. The impact of these particles on sorption and extraction phenomena was also studied to determine an optimal HDPE-based formulation in order to limit the physical loss of oligomers and antioxidants. The guideline of this project was the determination of Structure / Morphology / Properties relationships to have a better understanding of the involved mechanisms
