Abstract (sommario):
In order to answer the question of the involvement of Harvard Theological Review in the publication of essays relating to the New Testament, I have gone through all the published indices that were issued by the journal. The first index was published in 1938 and covered the journal's first thirty years; thereafter indices were published at ten-year intervals. The figures to which I shall refer in this paper are not necessarily exact, but they offer a reasonably good indication of the commitment of Harvard Theological Review to the field of New Testament studies. I did not limit the following survey to essays that deal with the New Testament proper, narrowly defined. There are numerous articles that contribute to New Testament studies indirectly, as they deal with the literature of postexilic Israel, the so-called Old Testament Apocrypha and Pseudepigrapha, the Dead Sea Scrolls, Philo, Josephus, or rabbinic Judaism. Other areas of scholarly endeavor relating to the New Testament and early Christianity are the history of ancient Christianity, New Testament apocrypha including the writings from Nag Hammadi, the Apostolic Fathers, early Christian apologists, and ancient church history in general. Finally, many of these essays, often written by New Testament scholars, deal with material from the Greco-Roman world.

This concluding essay outlines several alternative futures for Russia in the coming decades, building upon the perspectives and information in the preceding essays in this volume and relating these to my own thinking about the future of Russia. Hence, this essay does not represent a consensus of the issue's twelve authors, but rather a meld of their thoughts and my own.

Abstract (sommario):
Students’ writing problems have become one of the first and foremost issues in writing classrooms, and to know the common errors which frequently occur on students’ writing papers is usually what the writing teachers have conducted in the classrooms. However, no research study has been conducted at Huynh Man Dat High school to investigate this aspect. The purpose of the current study is to investigate the common written errors on students’ writing essays and their attitudes towards the writing process approach. The target subjects are from grade twelve, Huynh Man Dat (HMD) High School. Data collection was from writing tasks and questionnaires. The study found that the four most common errors frequently occur in students’ writing journals are relating to tenses, collocations, spellings, and verb forms. The findings from an attitude questionnaire indicated that the students expressed positive attitudes towards it and showed a high appreciation for the effects of process writing.

Abstract (sommario):
The philosopher Norberto Bobbio was an important exponent of Italian liberalism and exerted considerable influence on Italian political thought of the second half of the twentieth century. The article examines the few texts by Bobbio relating to cinema. These are three essays published between 1961 and 1962 concerning censorship, freedom of art and eroticism. In these essays Bobbio expresses an opinion contrary to censorship but he critically judges the spread of eroticism in cinema and literature. He therefore calls for an evolution of customs capable of setting limits on erotic excesses. The underestimation of rules – also noted by other commentators in references to other areas of his thought – is a weakness in Bobbio’s reflection of censorship

Abstract (sommario):
The aim of this study was to identify process-related indicators for grading group essays. The research participants were students registered in a teacher-training course using an instructional design with face-to-face and digital blended learning. The course required the students in small collaborative groups to design, implement, and evaluate a teaching program using creative pedagogical designs, which were documented using group essays. Four indicators relating to group essays along the course process were collected: (A) group essay grades assessed by different agents, (B) students’ other course grades or behaviours (i.e., multiple assessments) as well as (C) comment behaviours and (D) version history behaviours through an online co-editing system (i.e., Google Docs). Statistical analysis results indicated that the instructor’s group essay grades were related to the group essay grades assessed by out-group peers (i.e. peers from other groups), online group comment frequencies, and online group comment interaction density. Abstract (sommario):
The book is made up of a series of conference papers and previously published essays. No attempt is made at relating the essays, so the reader gets no real sense of structure for the book as a whole or sense of what the author intends the book to accomplish, other than a kind of Bruce Lincoln’s “Recent Hits.” This is not necessarily a critique, unless one thinks that explicitly stated coherence is a requirement of scholarly books. If a red thread can be traced in this very rich assortment it must be found already (and perhaps only) in the title, where we find that the book is about the relationship between Gods, demons, priests, and scholars. The book is very much about the discursive positionality of scholars of religion in relation to their object they study.

Abstract (sommario):
The current study applied consensual qualitative research–modified to essays written by 51 college women completing an expressive writing intervention over three time points for a total of 153 essays to identify how increases in self-compassion improve body image. A qualitative coding team tracked changes in affect and cognition over three time points. The results demonstrated that college women consistently expressed body acceptance and psychological flexibility. Additionally, the participants expressed important increases in mindfulness as well as decreases in social influences, feelings of separation, negative health behaviors, and attention to media messages. Decreases were found in their expressions of body functionality, love and kindness toward their body, and internal locus of control. These findings suggest pathways through which self-compassion may improve women’s body image by increasing mindfulness and decreasing the negative ways of relating to one’s body, specifically in the areas of media, clothing, make-up, and negative social interactions.

Abstract (sommario):
Pease porridge hot, pease porridge coldPease porridge in the pot nine days oldSome like it hot, some like it coldBut none like it in the pot nine days old.The recent flurry of monographs and collections relating to the social aspects of medicine and disease in Africa and elsewhere ensures that collections of essays on this topic will receive much attention and will be concomitantly influential. Under the circumstances it is particularly regretable that the volume under review has been published so many years after most of the essays in it were written, precluding their referring to the many recent advances in the field. Of the 21 articles and introductory essays in Steven Feierman and John Janzen, eds., The Social Basis of Health and Healing in Africa (Berkeley: University of California Press, 1992), six (amounting to 24% of the text) are reprints, seven (35%) are revisions whose originals date from 1979 and 1981, and eight (41%) are originals. Of these latter, two chapters date from 1983, and two of the reprints have been supplanted by book-length monographs. One must therefore ask of the editors, the press, and the Joint Committee on African Studies of the American Council of Learned Societies and the Social Science Research Council whether such unusually delayed publication is justified.

Wilder, Laura, e Joanna Wolfe. Research in the Teaching of English 44, n. 2 (1 novembre 2009): 170–209. http://dx.doi.org/10.58680/rte20099183.

Abstract (sommario):
The ethics and efficacy of explicitly teaching disciplinary discourse conventions to undergraduate students has been hotly debated. This quasi-experimental study seeks to contribute to these debates by focusing on the conventional special topoi of literary analysis”conventions that previous Writing in the Disciplines (WID) research indicates are customarily tacitly imparted to literature students. We compare student writing and questionnaires from seven sections of Writing about Literature providing explicit instruction in these disciplinary conventions to those from nine sections taught using traditional methods. We examine whether explicit instruction in disciplinary conventions helps students produce rhetorically effective discourse, whether English professors prefer student discourse that uses these conventions, and whether explicit instruction in disciplinary conventions hampers student expression, enjoyment, and engagement. Five English professors who rated the student essays gave higher ratings to essays that engaged the special topoi of their discipline. Furthermore, they significantly preferred the essays written by students who had received explicit instruction in these topoi. Meanwhile, students who received explicit instruction in the special topoi of literary analysis indicated comparable, often higher levels, of engagement, enjoyment, and perceived opportunities for self-expression to those students who experienced the course’s traditional pedagogy. These findings suggest several implications for WID instruction and research relating to student and faculty professionalization in higher education.

Abstract (sommario):
Background and Purpose: In order to compete with native speakers, EFL and ESL students are under more pressure to produce native-like academic papers. This has led to more reliance on online grammar checkers, but these can be ineffective with regards to identifying and giving feedback on particular grammatical forms, phrasing and issues relating to style. Language learners may not be effectively correcting these errors. Hence, this study aims to examine the effectiveness of one online grammar checker, grammarly.com, with that of self-editing. Methodology: This case study employed a descriptive approach to data analysis. 199 essays were collected from undergraduates at four universities in Kyushu, dated from April, 2019 to January, 2020. 99 essays were proofed by an online grammar checker, while 100 essays were self-edited. The English proficiency level of the participants was at the lower to intermediate range (i.e., TOEIC 300 to a TOEIC 500). The online grammar checker Grammarly was utilized by all participants to minimize issues relating to feedback. In the analysis of data, the complexity, accuracy, and fluency (CAF) of the essays was assessed in order to examine the significant changes between the first and other drafts, and the types of errors produced. Findings: Results showed that there were no significant differences found in terms of the methods of editing, although the participants who employed online grammar checkers had better results. It was also shown that there were no significant differences in terms of syntactical complexity with either method of editing. There were fewer errors committed by the participants who self-edited, but there were no significant differences in the edited drafts with regards to errors/100 ratios, error-free clauses, and error-free clause ratios. The study showed marginal differences between the two methods of proofing but indicated that online tools can be useful for identifying certain grammatical errors. Contributions: This paper argues that educators need to work more with EFL learners on the editorial and proofing process, but online grammar checkers may be a useful pedagogical tool to help low-proficient L2 learners. Abstract (sommario):
Although the efficiency of underflow baffles has never been clearly proven, these underflow baffles have gained in popularity over the last few years as a viable means to intercept floatables in Combined Sewer Overflows (CSOs). These pilot scale essays, performed in a 17.0 metres basin at various flowrates, show that a critical horizontal velocity (VCR) may develop in the overflow chamber. Whenever this critical velocity is exceeded, floatables that would normally rise to the surface are kept within the flow and never intercepted, thus rendering the underflow baffle ineffective. The equation relating the critical horizontal velocity to the vertical velocity is found to be: VCR = 16 w RH1/6.

Abstract (sommario):
The purpose of this study is to describe the public's reception of essays by Indonesian public figures, namely Dahlan Iskan, on social media. The ease with which social media is used to communicate has increased the involvement of the audience in receptive to a work. In fact, audience receptions on social media are often used as a reference in assessing whether or not a work is good. Therefore, research on reader reception on social media is interesting to do. This research uses qualitative methods and the research approach used is reception study. In this study, the theory of active audiences in the form of the encoding-decoding model proposed by Stuart Hall is also used. The results showed that there were three typologies of audiences in receptive to Dahlan Iskan's essays, namely there were four models of readers in receptive to DI essays on social media. The four reader models include (a) dominant-hegemonic readers, (b) negotiating readers, (c) oppositional readers, and (d) recreational readers. The categorization of this reader model is based on the position of the reader towards the text being received. Apart from these four categories, ideological-political readership models are also found, namely readers who are not dominant, negotiating, in opposition, or recreational. Readers of this model respond to the work by relating it to political conditions. Whatever works are received, readers of the ideological-political model always relate the content of the work and comment negatively on the political conditions in Indonesia.

Abstract (sommario):
Climate emergency, landscape connectivity and rapid urbanization are among the major challenges of the 21st century. This paper discusses ways in which cities can respond to the changing climate and put in place a sustainable vision. It uses the garden city concept as a vehicle to investigate the future of our cities in relation to the climate emergency and the elements that urban centres need to provide. Cities and their wider regions are recognised as key actors in supporting systemic change and climate change governance, and therefore the scope of this paper is to explore contemporary models of garden cities and the ways in which these might be able to address climate emergency as well as the concepts of zero carbon and sustainability. The study uses the 2014 Wolfson Economics Prize, which was based on a garden city question. Taking an environmental perspective on the delivery of future cities, and using the competition essays and masterplans, this study produces analytical drawings aiming to unpack the concepts of sustainability and low carbon. This research concludes that the garden city concept can support the future needs of our settlements, but a 21st century approach needs to be developed. The social and economic ideas originally introduced at the end of the 19th century need to be updated as a holistic vision, including nature and biodiversity, climatic conditions, climate emergency adaptation and mitigation processes as well as community health and wellbeing, to be able to fully respond to the needs of the future.

Abstract (sommario):
The notion of the ordinary or everyday is of seminal importance in Cavell’s readings of literature. The transcendental and anthropological dimensions of skepticism and the ordinary, however, may sometimes appear to be treated by him in an essentially ahistorical manner. But the discovery of the ordinary, which is always a re-discovery, can also be shown to be deeply embedded in Cavell’s treatment of modernism in the arts. The present essay therefore proposes that we can deepen our understanding of the ordinary by relating it to Walter Benjamin’s ideas about the “loss of aura,” which he develops with regard to Baudelaire, Proust and film, most famously in his essays about “The Artwork in the Age of Its Mechanical Reproducibility” and on “Some Motifs in Baudelaire.”

Abstract (sommario):
The current issue in the History of Education Quarterly is significant for various reasons. For the first time in the journal's history, scholars from several disciplines have converged to address topics relating to the history of American Indian education. The essays challenge historians to think of research methodologies that go beyond the traditional sources of documents retrieved from archives and other depositories. This is perhaps most clearly seen in KuuNUx TeeRIt Kroupa's essay on the Arikara Cultural Center and his attempt to understand their educational history through an Arikara lens of understanding. It is also evident in Adrea Lawrence's idea of “epic learning” and her inclusion of “Native” stories and their relationship to “place” as a frame to interpret American Indian education histories. Each of these articles, including Donald Warren's piece on Native history as education history, urges historians to think more broadly on how to create Indian education narratives. However, my intention here is not to provide a comprehensive response to all three essays. Rather, I want to briefly apply key topics in each text to help enlighten my own research on Hopis and the off-reservation Indian boarding school experience, and to offer some direction on how these issues might be applied to current and future studies.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract In one of his essays written shortly after the war, Gustaw Herling pointed out that what mattered to him in his approach to novels was not the used method of writing, but a specific representation of a human being in “moral and psychological becoming.” The patron of the idea of such a representation and the tendencies associated with it was Joseph Conrad, the author occupying an exceptional place in Herling's writings on literature. This article discusses a wide range of issues relating to the fictional character and its creation, a vast subject of Herling's essays and critical writings. Close attention is paid to his perception of Conrad's protagonists and to his use of them as a measure of literary works by other authors, especially moralist writers: Graham Greene, Albert Camus, Fyodor Dostoevsky, Franz Kafka, and Alexander Solzhenitsyn. The article also discusses other themes and strategies of Herling's criticism, emphasizing its multilateral and far-reaching nature. It shows how Herling—moving from the literary character to the author—crossed the boundaries of literature and connected its fictional realm with the real world. As a critic and writer living and working in exile, Herling not only dealt with literature as an art form, but also debated the problems of postwar history and politics, communism, human freedom, and the moral attitudes and responsibilities of writers.

Abstract (sommario):
With the emergence of medial and dynamic contexts, influenced by the invisible presence of the post-digital, the need for digital and transmedial literacy is arising, necessarily challenging education and training. It is essential to explore teaching strategies to support critical understanding beyond the static information. The argument maps, originally developed and tested in static information contexts, can be thought of as effective in emerging dynamic textual forms. Based on these premises, a narrative review of the literature was conducted. Three conceptual nodes have been identified, developed in specific essays and related bibliographies: a) the first relating to the educational concern on argumentative logic, from oral to written argumentation; b) the second relating to the argumentative maps, as a tool to support argumentative skills; c) the third focused on an ontological problematic in defining the argumentative text, from analog to multimodal. Starting from these three conceptual nodes, an initial conceptual response to the following research question was made: Can argumentative maps be applied in new media contexts (digital, transmedial, data literacy)? The interconnection between the three nodes highlighted the relevance of argumentation in the new media society and suggested an empirical investigation into the use of argumentative maps for digital literacy.

Abstract (sommario):
This paper is focused on a volume of short essays and notes by Maria Kuncewiczowa entitled Notatki włoskie. Przezrocza (Italian notes. Slides) from 1985. The first part is devoted to the evolution and the literary realizations of the Italian journey, starting from 1918, in order to offer an interpretation of the place occupied by Kuncewiczowa’s work in the panorama of contemporary Polish literature. In the second part, the author analyzes the genesis and genre of this literary text, recognizing its characteristics as a silva rerum, a traditional formal model of Polish literature which experienced renewed fortune in the second half of the twentieth century. The third part of the essay constitutes its thematic core: the author analyzes the image of Rome in all its many facets, relating it to the writer’s poetics and worldview.

Abstract (sommario):
This paper discusses the topic of corporate social responsibility (CSR) and proposes that CSR should be taught in an MBA program and, more specifically, in a Managerial Accounting course of an MBA program. CSR aligns strongly with other managerial accounting topics typically taught in an MBA Program such as the balanced scorecard and triple-bottom line reporting. In putting forward this suggestion, this paper proposes a definition of CSR, reviews recent literature relating to CSR, and provides several strategies for teaching and assessing students’ understanding and appreciation of CSR. In the results section of the paper, a content analysis of student essays provides an insight into how students view CSR. The paper concludes with an overview of what is attainable by teaching CSR in a Managerial Accounting MBA course.

Abstract (sommario):
General relativistic gravity in freely falling frames is formulated using undergraduate calculus and matrix algebra. The key to the formulation involves retaining Newton’s first law of motion in the local spacetime of freely falling frames. The formulation shows that the relative acceleration of two particles in the freely falling frame does not depend directly on their relative velocity. Also, the 4 × 4 matrix relating the relative acceleration of two particles to their relative spacetime displacement closely resembles the physics of Newtonian gravity, implying that the local gravitational field obeys Laplace’s equation. The results of this paper and a previous publication [L. R. Miller, Phys. Essays 35, 202 (2022)] provide an intuitive approach that enables the use of lower-level mathematics to arrive at Einstein’s theory of gravity in empty space.

Abstract (sommario):
Introduction Due to the health consequences arising from climate change, medical students will inevitably interact with affected patients during their training and careers. Accordingly, medical schools must incorporate education on the impacts of climate change on health and equity into their curricula. We created a curricular thread called “Climate Change, Health, and Equity” in the first-year preclinical medical program to teach foundational concepts and foster self-reflection and critical consciousness. Methods The authors developed a continuum of practice including administrators, educators and faculty members, students, and community partners to plan and design curricular activities. First-year medical students at Duke University School of Medicine participated in seven mandatory foundational lectures and two experiential learning opportunities in the local community. Following completion of activities, students wrote a critical reflection essay and completed a self-directed learning exercise. Essays were evaluated using the REFLECT rubric to assess if students achieved critical reflection and for thematic analysis by Bloom’s Taxonomy. Results All students (118) submitted essays. A random sample of 30 (25%) essays underwent analysis. Evaluation by the REFLECT rubric underscored that all students were reflecting or critically reflecting on thread content. Thematic analysis highlighted that all students (30/30, 100%) were adept at identifying new areas of medical knowledge and connecting concepts to individual experiences, institutional practices, and public health and policy. Most students (27/30; 90%) used emotionally laden words, expressing negative feelings like frustration and fear but also positive sentiments of solidarity and hope regarding climate change and effects on health. Many students (24/30; 80%) expressed actionable items at every level including continuing self-directed learning and conversing with patients, minimizing healthcare waste, and advocating for climate-friendly policies. Conclusion After participating in the curricular thread, most medical students reflected on cognitive, affective, and actionable aspects relating to climate change, health, and equity.

Abstract (sommario):
One of the successful learning English writings is by knowing students' errors in writing an English essay. Since English writing essay becomes a compulsory subject that must be taken by students at college, therefore the English essay has a big contribution. Although writing an English essay does not pay attention much to the proportional explaining and giving instruction in learning, but it still has meaningful contributions for writing skill. It is not for writing essay but also for other writing skills such as writing paragraph, writing scientific paper, and etc. Type of this research was qualitative content analysis through documents of English essays written by students of third semester of Universitas Dharmas Indonesia. Respondents of this research were 14 students. The analysis of all documents reveals that there are 220 total numbers of students’ errors that classified into 12 types of errors made by the students. Spelling is classified as the biggest error committed by 46 times or 20.90%. Then, verb-agreement is a kind of errors that committed by 38 times or 17.27%. Next is error of sentence fragment that committed by 24 times or 10.90%. Relating to research finding, It is recommended that English writing lecturers should much pay attention to divide, discuss, and explain all these errors in order to minimize and make writing essays easy written and conducted by English students.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract This article focuses on two aspects of Isaac Bashevis Singer’s life and work from 1923 to 1935. First, it outlines his early career in Warsaw, focusing on his essays and tracing his efforts to establish a literary career independent from that of his older brother, Israel Joshua. Second, it considers Singer’s emigration from Warsaw, with a focus on his brother’s efforts to get him out, as found in personal correspondence. Along the way, I expose gaps between Singer’s memoirs and details found in letters, especially relating to historical circumstances leading him to obtain a tourist visa to the United States in 1935. The article delineates a tension between Singer’s establishment of a position within Yiddish literature in Warsaw distinct from his brother’s, and the need to leave the city in order to survive, adding Israel Joshua’s own voice to the testimony from this period.

Abstract (sommario):
As its title makes clear, this is a collection of 23 papers presented as a festschrift to Matti Egon, the founder of The Greek Archaeological Committee UK, by a selection of past holders of scholarships granted by the Committee (some were unable to contribute for lack of time available). As such, it offers a good idea of the laudably wide range of topics that the Committee has been willing to support but, inevitably, it has no common theme. Although the majority of papers are concerned in some way with the Greek world, five lack any substantial ‘Hellenic’ link, two relating to Cyprus, one to Troy, one to the Phoenicians of southern Spain, and one to Mount Sinai.

Abstract (sommario):
When Susanna Fein and David Rabin, the editors of The Chaucer Review, set out to celebrate the 50th anniversary of their journal, they chose an excellent theme for a book: visual approaches to Chaucer. The result of their choice and their collaboration with other Chaucerian scholars is a valuable book: Chaucer: Visual Approaches. In an age when it is possible to view myriad images of Chauceriana online just through a Google keyword search, it is necessary to articulate logical ways of analyzing the available visual materials and relating them to Chaucer’s literary works. As Fein and Rabin state in their preface: “In offering to Chaucerians and other medievalists an amply illustrated volume of essays, we hope to display an array of models for how Chaucer may be read alongside visual evidence” (xv). Their book does indeed achieve this aim, and it does so in part through its organization. The volume is divided into three parts: “Ways of Seeing,” “Chaucerian Imagescapes,” and “Chaucer Illustrated.”

Abstract (sommario):
The theory of the dynamic medium of reference (DMR) has already been presented in several articles, in particular, Pignard [Phys. Essays 32, 422 (2019]. The objective of this article is to present gravitational waves within the framework of the DMR theory. For this, an important relation is established between the gravitational potential and the speed of the flux of the medium. This relation makes it possible to deduce two differential equations verified by the speed of the flux of the medium, one relating to the stationary part and the other to the variational part, which corresponds to gravitational waves. Solving these two equations provides the speed of the total flux of the medium. An application of the found formulas is carried out to a binary system, and the link with the metric tensor and the fundamental quadratic form of general relativity is established. Finally, in the DMR theory, gravitational waves are waves that propagate through the medium at the speed of light, not ripples of space-time.

Abstract (sommario):
This study used on-line protocol analysis to contrast the effects on the writing process of knowledge taught in three instructional treatments: Models (declarative knowledge of form), General Procedures (declarative knowledge of form plus general procedural knowledge related to content plus procedural knowledge related to form), and Task-Specific Procedures (declarative knowledge of form plus task-specific procedural knowledge related to content plus procedural knowledge related to form). Pretest and posttest protocols from six students in each treatment measured treatment effects on the processes of students writing essays involving extended definition. Students in the Models treatment made weak improvements in relating the elements of definition and did not think critically about the concepts being defined. Students in the General Procedures treatment made gains in linking ideas according to particular task constraints and improved their critical thinking skills. Students in the Task-Specific Procedures integrated their ideas purposefully, thought critically about the concepts being defined, and appeared to establish a conversational voice to anticipate composing needs.

Abstract (sommario):
Exceptional in demonstrating the political engagement emerging in twenty-first-century performance is the corpus of the writer and director Milo Rau, whose practice is distinguished by its (re)meditation of the real. With detailed reference to Mitleid (2016) and La Reprise (2018), this article examines Rau’s self-reflexive strategies in (re)presenting testimony or an event as a means not of depicting the real, but of making the theatrical representation itself real in order to change the world rather than merely to portray it. The article focuses in particular on strategies relating to the actor-character and spectatorship. Rau’s interest in the positions of the actor and spectator illuminates issues that have arisen in the discourse of theatre witnessing and in recent scholarship on dramaturgical approaches and spectatorship in contemporary political performance. Essentially, Rau makes the performer’s habitus transparent, and challenges the spectator’s reflexivity, effectively rebutting the largely unchallenged assumption that characters who perform witnesses necessarily leave little room for the spectator to be a performing witness. Stuart Young is Professor of Theatre Studies at the University of Otago. His recent publications include the co-edited Ethical Exchanges: Translation, Adaptation, Dramaturgy (Brill Rodopi, 2017), while his practice-led research into Theatre of the Real includes The Keys are in the Margarine: A Verbatim Play about Dementia (2014).

Abstract (sommario):
The five essays in this Agora, written by Jack Goldsmith and myself, Ashley Deeks, Ryan Goodman, Rebecca Ingber, and Michael Ramsey, consider the legal legacy of the Obama administration concerning the use of military force, with respect to both domestic law and international law. Prominent developments during the Obama administration relating to war powers include the administration's defense in habeas litigation of its authority to detain members of Al Qaeda and associated groups in military custody; its increased use of targeted killing outside of active combat areas, in part through frequent missile attacks carried out by drones; its use of military force in 2011 against the regime of Libyan leader Muammar Qaddafi, pursuant to a United Nations Security Council resolution; its deliberations in 2013 about the use of military force against Syria in response to the use of chemical weapons by the regime of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad; and its initiation of a long-term conflict against the Islamic State in 2014. This Agora touches on these and other developments and offers a range of perspectives.

Abstract (sommario):
In this work, rather than relating different areas of knowledge, the authors make use of logic, which is intrinsic to mathematical models. They discuss one of the fallacies that hides behind the analytic hierarchy process (AHP). In particular, the analysis of the consistency index, sometimes referred as the Saaty consistency or simply the consistency, will be discussed. The AHP is based on three fundamental axioms: reciprocity, homogeneity, and synthesis. However, it gives a great relevance to consistency, which is managed like a fourth axiom. On each of these four axioms, some comments will be made. However, this work will focus mainly on discussing the importance of the consistency index, to which, undoubtedly, a large number of essays and many hours of work have been devoted. In trying to answer the question, the calculation of consistency is really important. The aim of the paper is to raise a discussion of one of the fallacies that hides behind the analytic hierarchy process and present a simple and direct way to handle Saaty consistency.

Abstract (sommario):
The aim of this study was to determine whether problem-based writing with peer review (PW-PR) improves undergraduate student performance on physiology exams. Didactic lectures were replaced with assignments to give students practice explaining their reasoning while solving qualitative problems, thus transferring the responsibility for abstraction and generalization to the students. Performance on exam items about concepts taught using PW-PR was compared with performance on concepts taught using didactic lectures followed by group work. Calibrated Peer Review™, a Web-delivered program, was used to collect student essays and to manage anonymous peer review after students “passed” three calibration peer reviews. Results show that the students had difficulty relating concepts. Relationship errors were categorized as 1) problems recognizing levels of organization, 2) problems with cause/effect, and 3) overgeneralizations. For example, some described cells as molecules; others thought that vesicles transport materials through the extracellular fluid. With PW-PR, class discussion was used to confront and resolve such difficulties. Both multiple-choice and essay exam results were better with PW-PR instead of lecture.

Abstract (sommario):
Most previous studies relating to women in Tang Daoism have relied heavily on Du Guangting’s (850-933) Yongcheng jixian lu, despite the fact that Du’s acknowledged hagiographies are idealized versions of the women’s lives. The present article seeks instead to gather information about historical priestesses from a wide range of contemporary sources, including most importantly epitaphic inscriptions, as well as other materials such as manuscripts from Dunhuang, various poems, essays, anecdotal accounts, and monastic gazetteers. Even while taking account of the possible urge of the authors sometimes to overpraise or exaggerate the merits of their subjects, we discover a surprisingly broad gamut of abilities displayed and activities engaged in by these women. Records relating to fifty-two named individuals are surveyed here, yielding much information of a quotidian nature about the varying roles and religious experiences of Daoist priestesses.

Abstract This special issue of the Public Historian explores issues relating to the management of public history programs in New York State. State history is something that continues to be worthy of preservation, management, study, and analysis because of the distinctive historical development and traits of each state and the role of state history as a portal to national history. New York's history is complex because of its size, ethnic diversity, cosmopolitan character, and the rapid pace of its historical development. What might be termed its “historical infrastructure”—the totality of programs to manage its history—is also complex. State government history programs include the State Archives, State Museum, and Office of Parks, Recreation, and Historic Preservation. There are large organizations with statewide programs and influence such as the New York State Historical Association, dozens of state historic sites, and several hundred local historical societies and historical museums. Issues include lack of funding, inadequate public support, fragmentation of effort and need for better coordination, and need for more robust use of information technology. Each of the seven essays represents its author's insights and perspectives on accomplishments, issues, and needs.

Abstract (sommario):
The philosophy of William James can be useful in the interpretation of works of art, although James himself never specifically set forth an aesthetic theory. As an example, a Jamesian view of consciousness is enacted on multiple levels in Charles Ives's Piano Sonata No. 2, “Concord, Mass., 1840–60,” and the accompanying Essays before a Sonata. James's metaphor for the working of the human mind—a view widely circulated in Ives's day—as a “stream of thought,” the largely transitory movement of which James likened to a bird's flights and perchings; the value James finds in vagueness; and his treatment of the nature of truth as fundamentally mutable and provisional all find musical expression in the “Concord” Sonata. Additionally, the complex genealogy of the sonata and its connection to related works, notably the Fourth and Universe Symphonies, can be interpreted as reflecting James's cosmological vision of a pluralistic universe or “multiverse.” Reading the sonata through a Jamesian lens provides new insights into the behavior of Ives's music by relating it to turn-of-the-century thinking about the functioning of the human brain as well as early-twentieth-century American philosophy and cosmology.

Abstract (sommario):
By studying the two periods in British history influenced by the Enlightenment movement, we can gain a deeper understanding of how elite groups solidify their dominance across various social contexts. Understanding the historical mechanisms of this entrenchment enables us to mitigate similar mistakes and risks in the future. We have analyzed some essays that explore how elite groups maintained their dominance during these two periods. Our findings reveal that in the 16th century, the monarch, who represented the elite at the time, used religion to consolidate their power. They achieved this by merging political and religious authorities, which subsequently led to the potential for abuses of power. We believe that such risks can be mitigated while still preserving the influence of the monarchy, by separating church and state but allowing the monarch to exert influence through a council. Under the capitalist society of the 19th century, research proved that elite groups consolidated their absolute power through legal regulations, economic limitations, and tax rates. The connection between and details within the case study is shown, along with further analysis of relating documents and societal issues worth discussing.

Abstract (sommario):
Death denial is a psychological impulse and a cultural attitude that banishes thoughts about death and disavows the reality of personal mortality. In theatre, death denial can function as an unexamined philosophy and conditioning element unless it is foregrounded and challenged. In this article, Adrian Curtin looks at two examples of American experimental theatre that did just that: a 1975 production of Dino Buzzati's 1953 play Un Caso Clinico (A Clinical Case) and Terminal (1969–1971), a collectively created work by the Open Theatre. Buzzati's play is little known, especially in English-language scholarship. This article pairs an obscure work with a canonical work in order to offer new insight into American experimental theatre of the early 1970s, indicating how both productions contributed to the contemporaneous ‘death awareness’ movement, which opened up matters relating to death and dying. These productions highlighted the illogicality and absurdity of death denial, exposing the delusional basis of this attitude and its potentially damaging effects on the individual and society. Adrian Curtin lectures in the Drama Department at the University of Exeter. He is the author of Avant-Garde Theatre Sound: Staging Sonic Modernity (Palgrave, 2014) and multiple essays on theatre sound, musical performance, and modernism. He is the 2015 winner of the Early Career Research Prize, awarded by the Theatre and Performance Research Association.

Abstract (sommario):
The annual publication of the Theatre Library Association is designed “to gather and disseminate scholarly articles dealing with the location of resource materials” relating to all media as well as popular entertainments, the evaluation of those resources, and to include as well “monographs of previously unpublished original material.” The volumes are slim ones, so we should not expect coverage of the many theatre collections available to scholars and practitioners, but rather a highly selective series of essays reflecting the priorities of the Association or of the individual volume editors. This certainly appears to be the case here: the 1998 volume concerns itself with eighteenth- and nineteenth-century American pleasure gardens, whereas, after a publication hiatus of three years, the 2001 volume is focused around the acquisition, scope, and use of four major archives—those of the Joseph Papp/New York Shakespeare Festival and of Lucille Lortel in the New York Public Library of the Performing Arts, the Lawrence and Lee Theatre Research Institute at Ohio State University, and the holdings of the Weill—Lenya Research Center in New York. As a consequence, the tones of the two volumes are very different, as is their utility. The first volume appears to be directed toward a disinterested readership; the second addresses those who might actually use the particular collections.

Abstract (sommario):
In the press of the interwar period, among the group of Warsaw opinion-forming periodicals, the three largest literary and social weeklies dominated – the liberal Wiadomości Literackie, the pro-Sanacja Pion and the right-wing Prosto z Mostu. These periodicals shaped the artistic tastes and socio-political views of the progressive intelligentsia. They commented on the most important events of literary and social life, including those related to the activity of rural residents. The article contains the results of a comparative analysis of the speeches of critics and columnists of the capital’s literary magazines in the 1930s, relating to selected forms of social, cultural and political activity of peasants (literary and diary works, as well as strike actions). The study deals with the main themes of press discussions and literary critical essays, referring to the constitutive features of peasant literature, the social image of the village (Jalu Kurek’s novel Grypa szaleje w Naprawie), the living conditions of peasants (Pamiętniki chłopów) and their political attitudes (the Great Peasant Uprising). The interpretation of press materials allowed for the formulation of conclusions about the press image of a cruel and hungry peasant, culturally excluded, and deprived of a chance to change his living conditions. The demands for the social advancement of peasants put forward by columnists of Warsaw magazines were mostly declarative and conservative.
