According to the global humanitarian overview published by the UNOCHA, 274 million people needed some form of humanitarian assistance across the world in 2022. In the same year, 387 natural disasters were recorded world wide, affecting 187 million people. According to an estimate, in 2022, 27 million people were affected by labor-related human trafficking globally. Now, more than ever, human race faces a tough challenge, and this calls for renewed focus on research into humanitarian operations. This thesis deals with two humanitarian applications in operations research and operations management. The first application, crowdsourced humanitarian relief vehicle routing problem (CHR-VRP), pertains to optimizing the logistics of post-disaster relief efforts. The second application pertains to analysing buyer-agent contracts to reduce the incidence of modern slavery in supply chains

Human tragedy and crime that we prefer to think of another time, slavery has never been so prosperous since the official announcement of its abolition. Therefore, its eradication is facing a serious lack of jurisdictionalisation and a lack of enforcement of specific public policies. At the same time, the vigorous intervention of the authorities is obstructed that which allow a relative impunity to the traffickers.Prima facie it may seem easy to define slavery as the concept seems to heard and the current topic. But beyond this idyllic picture conveyed by the transatlantic slave trade, slavery persists and its modern avatars overlap with its ancient forms. The transnational nature of this crime, the anonymity of the authors facilitated by technological developments and the difficulty of identifying his victims, lead us to wonder if the international sphere is not actually the best able to fight against slavery. Furthermore, enforcing the prohibition of slavery going on today by a multidisciplinary approach to the phenomenon which must be done internationally in order to fully grasp the scale of what slavery really is, but involves, however, cooperation of States. Indeed more than a simple legal question, even with an international scope, the fight against contemporary slavery also involves an awareness of the political sphere and a commitment of the civil society without which no measures could be effectively applied

Ottoman historiography dealing with slavery has been concentrated particularly on the later period of the Empire (19th-20th c.) and produced monographs of research and synthesis (B. Lewis 1971, 1990 ; E. Toledano 1982, 1997, 2007 ; H. Erdem 1996 ; M. Zilfi 2010).). For the early-modern period, there is a growing body of articles on localized aspects of the servile phenomenon. This dissertation’s objective is to realize the first monograph on slavery in the Ottoman society of the so-called “classical” period in whatever language it may be. The main focus is on slavery in the private space as opposed to the more well-known and studied sultan’s slaves and the military-administrative servitude (the “kul system”). Based essentially on archival documents of the Ottoman state, legal and juridical records, as well as literary texts, the dissertation tackles problems of juridical, social, economical, cultural history, as well as that of mentalities. Thus the research’s main axes concern the legal doctrine of slavery as an institution and the implementation of law by the Ottoman authorities; the slave trade; various forms of slave labour; slavery in everyday life; the fate of manumitted slaves; but also the representations of slavery by the Ottoman elites (topic to which a third of the thesis is devoted). The geographical framework covers the “central provinces” (Rumelia, Istanbul, Anatolia), but the dissertation also includes micro-studies on Syria (Arab-speaking but inseparable from Anatolia), Egypt, Crimea, Caucasus and Kurdistan

This dissertation addresses the phenomena of human mobility across the Mediterranean between Christian and Islamic lands during the late 16lh and early 17* centuries. In particular, it focuses on long-term Christian captivity and enslavement, taking into account cases of more than ten-year detentions spent in Islamic lands, especially in Morocco and the dominions of the Ottoman Empire. Based on information provided by formerly enslaved persons to the institutions of the Hispanic Monarchy in order to obtain allowances and other financial aids once they had returned to Christian lands, this work analyses the trajectories of these men and women from their capture to their liberation, considering also their conditions of* detention. Their paths, marked by an intense mobility, represent a testimony of the persistent tensions and violence that characterized the Early Modem Mediterranean. At the same time, they are also a proof of the fluid relations between the Northern and Southern, and the Eastern and Western Mediterranean, as well as a testimony of the mechanisms of coexistence developed by actors in contexts of adversity
Abu, alkhir Saleh. "La traite des esclaves noirs en Lybie dans les temps modernes". Thesis, Lyon, 2016. http://www.theses.fr/2016LYSE2041/document.
This thesis is about the black slaves’ trade in Libya in the modern era especially in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. It illustrates a range of research issues such as, the sources of black slaves which came to Libya, its types and prices, the important commercial stations in the desert, the routes of the caravans which carried the slaves to North Africa and to Libya in particular. The research study comes across the most important markets on the Libyan soil, the methods of purchasing and buying, the slaves’ prices, the taxes and the customs. Hence, Libya was the area of re-exporting the slaves in the first place, the theses will mention the important exporting harbours and the important destinations such as Egypt, the Ottoman State (Turkey), and the Levant and the Maghreb countries. The thesis extends its scope to cover the social life of the slaves, their religious rituals, their customs and traditions, their houses, their relationships with their masters, the perception of the Libyan society to the slave phenomenon until they become an important component of the Libyan society and the Islamic societies in general. The last part of the thesis deals with the history of abolition of the slave trade and the disappearance of the slave phenomenon totally in Libya. This will be done by following the sequence of events starting with the international pressure on the Ottoman Empire for the abolition of slavery, the assessment of the seriousness of the governmental measures (procedures) and recalling the historical events until the end of the slave trade by the Italian occupation to Libya in 1911
