Abstract (sommario):
This study explored the presence of eroticism in selected Philippine short stories. There were four stories covered such as “The Riddle” by F. Sionil Jose, “The Virgin” by Kerima Polotan Tuvera, “Magnificence” by Estrella D. Alfon, “Midsummer” by Manuel Arguilla, “Dead Stars” by Paz Marquez Benitez and “How My Brother Leon Brought A Wife” by Manuel Arguilla. This literary study has to answer this lone question: What are the manifestations of eroticism, and how is eroticism presented in the different stories? Using qualitative design (focused on content-analysis) with two aid formal and psychoanalytic approaches of interpretation, the study yielded the following findings: The eight stories contained eroticism that revolved around physical attraction towards the opposite sex; love and sex; lust; husband-wife relationship; and physical admiration. Based on the study's findings, the researcher concludes that Eroticism, which manifests in the forms of physical attraction towards the opposite sex; love and sex; lust; and physical admiration, are present in the covered eight Philippine short stories in English. Based on the findings and conclusion of the study, the researchers have to advance the following recommendations: Literature teachers should expose students to various literary pieces of Philippine literature and expose further students to various literary approaches to analyze literary opuses appropriately. Themes on eroticism in Philippine short stories and other genres need to be handled carefully by teachers by allowing students to see the bad side and good side of such themes. Lessons need to be sought after the come up themes for self-reflection. Future researchers are inspired to replicate this study.

Abstract (sommario):
In the present article, I look into the culture-building power of Eros from Schiller’s ideas of “the aesthetic state of mind” in Letters on the Aesthetic Education of Man, through the Pre-Raphaelites’ eroticism to the nineteenthcentury fin de siècle aestheticized homoeroticism and beyond. I argue that eroticism is a reaction to the increasing sense of alienation brought about by bourgeois modernity. The “moments” and texts used to illustrate the thesis that eroticism shaped an alternative order are far from exhausting a very large list which could add nuances to the argument. The body is one of the essential aspects tackled, since eroticism cannot be conceived in its absence. The body may be an object of desire around which imagination weaves its yarn, or a blank page to be inscribed, or a danger zone, or a hypertrophied space projected by the lover’s longing for fusion. Eroticism in Salman Rushdie’s novels is the focus of my approach after a survey of some landmarks of erotic imagination. I argue that his novels are a new stage of the imagination infused by Eros. The article probes into how two centuries of aesthetic modernity have been shaped by the reality principle proposed by Schiller and how that essentially erotic model has suffered changes in time.

Abstract (sommario):
TRANSLATING EROTICISM AND EROTICISM IN TRANSLATION: GAMIANI, OR TWO PASSIONATE NIGHTS TRANSLATED IN GREEK BY ANDREAS STAIKOS Gamiani, or Two Passionate Nights by Alfred de Musset is the characteristic example of violent eroticism that is revealed through a lexico-semantic lace and an explicitly neat stylistics. The author aimed to create a novel imbued with descriptions of pleasure without using a single vulgar word. Our article is dedicated to the question of eroticism in translation through the strategy, the translation priorities and the techniques applied by the Greek translator Andréas Staikos. How does Musset’s lyrical writing and careful stylistics allay the possible issue of taboos in the translation process? What are the translator’s priorities? By drawing examples from his text, we will thus attempt to analyze Staikos’s approaches, which are based on a kind of antinomy concerning the transfer of eroticism at the semantic level and at the stylistic level from one language to another.

Abstract (sommario):
Discussions of eroticism usually commence with references to Georges Bataille and his L’Erotisme, whose first English edition was published under the title Death and Sensuality: A Study of Eroticism and the Taboo (1962), thus encouraging analyses in terms of transgression. This article opens with a quotation from Zygmunt Bauman’s essay, “On Postmodern Uses of Sex,” which reflects on the instability of the concept and emphasizes its contextualization. This openly declared incongruity raises questions of applicability. What is meant by eroticism today, i.e. in and after postmodernism? The article seeks to explore the relevance of the term in studies of urban drama and tries to suggest a workable approach that would differentiate between the commonly observable erotic material found on display within the premises of the city and the eroticism of the city itself. In the latter case the erotic relationship involves the materiality of the urban context and its user. The essay, focusing on drama, assumes that plays are written for the stage-their proper mode of existence-and deems it necessary to include the city/theatre and city/drama interdependence as well as the nexus of concepts such as urban drama and its genre restrictions into the following analysis.

This article intends to highlight the expressions and depictions of symbols and meanings of eroticism that are present in modern Javanese poetry texts (geguritan) as a form of Javanese literature and cultural products of society. This study seeks to reveal the symbols and meanings of eroticism that are expressed in the text of the modern Javanese poem geguritan entitled "Aku lan Dheweke" by Poer Adhi Prawoto, a poet who is also known as a critic of moderen Javanese literature. The formulation of the problem in this article is 1) How is eroticism expressed in the geguritan “Aku lan Dheweke” by Poer Adhie Prawoto? 2) What are the symbols and meanings implied in the geguritan “Aku lan Dheweke” by Poer Adhi Prawoto? The aims of this article are 1) To describe the form of erotic expression in the geguritan “Aku lan Dheweke” by Poer Adhie Prawoto. 2) Reveal the symbols and meanings implied in the erotic geguritan “Aku lan Dheweke” by Poer Adhi Prawoto. Methodologically the approach used in this research is descriptive qualitative with a paradigm of critical analysis of cultural studies. Qualitative descriptive research reveals the analyzed data by providing detailed and in-depth descriptions of each problem formulation. The theoretical approach uses a semiotic approach. Semiotics is a science or method of analysis to study signs. Signs are tools that we use in trying to find a way in this world, in the midst of humans and with humans. Azam, Hina. "The Hij?b at Cross-Purposes: Conflicting Models of the Erotic in Popular Islamic Advice Literature". Comparative Islamic Studies 5, n. 1 (10 luglio 2011): 131–76. http://dx.doi.org/10.1558/cis.v5i1.131.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
An examination of popular advice literature geared toward Muslims living in the West, such as the type commonly available in U.S. mosques and at online Islamic bookstores, indicates that there exist at least two potentially conflicting narratives regarding the ?ij?b (the veil or headcovering) as a pious practice. The first narrative presents female sexuality as a natural and positive force, as long as it is properly channeled. The ?ij?b, in this narrative, is not meant to categorically repress women’s erotic nature, but is a pragmatic social practice meant to avoid eroticism in the public sphere, where it would be a source of temptation and disorder. Often corresponding to this narrative is a notion of (female) sexuality as constant, and an ideology that deemphasizes gender differences. A second narrative presents erotic desire and fulfillment as a marker of attachment to the world and an assertion of the ego-self (nafs), and therefore negative, even in the context of marriage. In this view, the ?ij?b is an ascetic practice, a means by which a woman may discipline her self and develop a greater spiritual-moral faculty. This narrative, in many instances, considers sexuality to be malleable, and also tends to be paired with an emphasis on sexual difference. This paper seeks to tease out the conflicting models of the erotic that emerge in this genre of writing. It further suggests that deviations from a text’s core narrative and appeal to the opposing narrative betrays a lack of commitment to either a particular narrative of veiling or a particular model of eroticism. Rather, such deviations suggest an instrumental use of these narratives and models in favor of the predetermined conclusion, which is the injunction to veil, and to which end both models of eroticism and both narratives of veiling are bent. A final objective is to show, by drawing on ethnographic research, that the conflicting models of eroticism found in popular advice literature are mirrored in the thinking of the contemporary Western Muslim women who are the intended readers of this literature, and to reflect upon the possible consequences of this theoretical conflict upon Western Muslim readership.

Abstract (sommario):
Through literature, women recognized the possibility of building a new feminine identity, in which they are represented freely in all senses, including the sexual dimension in which they can satisfy themselves without the obligation to simply generate pleasure. (SOARES, 2019). In view of this, this research aims, firstly, to survey the history of eroticism in literature and then to analyze the issue of female sexual freedom in contemporary erotic literature and, finally, based on the chosen work, to identify how the erotic is represented and what is the character's relationship with his sexuality, so that it is possible to obtain a better understanding of the data selected through bibliographical research based on scientific articles and works that address themes related to the concepts presented by the works of (Gomes and Carvalho, 2017), (Lopes and Borges, 2015), (Costa and Marino, 2013), (Soares, 2019), (Rossini, 2016) among other relevant works in the area of female representation and eroticism considering the work God of the Ocean.

Abstract (sommario):
Bazin's distinction between different kinds of realism discriminates between an authentic mode of apprehension and mere sight, or between revelation and spectacle, as it were, where spectacle, significantly, is connected with the arousal of physical sensation. My argument is that this resonates in unexpected ways with a ‘modernist’ conceptual paradigm, specifically in relation to the persistent prioritization of the temporal over the spatial as the superior aesthetic register, itself based upon a residual resistance to the visual realm. To pursue this, I shall return to some of Bazin's most influential texts and concepts. In addition, a consideration of his more marginal discussions of cinema, sex and censorship will offer an oblique entry point into some of these broader issues at play in his work.

Abstract (sommario):
The purpose of this study is to examine aspects of spatial eroticism in the novels of Kim Seung-ok, a representative Korean writer of the 60s and 70s. In the case of Kim Seung-ok, the subject of this study, the narrative is a series of taboo acts that occur in a confined space called 'Moojin' and in a space called 'hotel', which can be interpreted in various ways in the modern and contemporary period, in the late 60s and 70s, when there was a clear class division between the middle class and the wealthy. In Kim's work, there are a number of special spaces, and these spaces are also spaces where desires are resolved and taboo behaviors occur. These spaces range from a local neighborhood to a hotel room. On the other hand, these spaces are also symbols of the transitional period from modernity to modernity, and the industrialization period that covers up the post-war scars. This study focuses on Kim Seung-ok's representative short story “Moojin Travel” (1964) and his middle-length film “Riverside Wife” (1977) as texts. Despite the 13-year time gap between the two texts, the reason for selecting them is that signs of popular literature and accompanying eroticism in Kim Seung-ok's later novels can already be seen in “Moojin Travel”. “The Riverside Lady” is a typical popular novel with bold sexual descriptions, active female characters, and patriarchal elements that still remain. However, it is also a work that remains on the borderline between eroticism and pornography. These later works of Kim Seung-ok are important texts for the study of Korean popular literature in the 60s and 70s, especially eroticism.

Abstract (sommario):
In the wake of Les fleurs du mal, the fin de siècle literature incorporates into the ethos of eroticism a demonic vision of divinity confrontation. The work of António Patrício is on the boundary between the presence of God and the confrontation with God, which is the other possible side of seduction. In D. João e a máscara, this confrontation with divinity is revealed in the close relation that exists between death and eroticism. Aspiring to eternity is a way of craving for the divine. Paradoxically, if the desire to be like God is the desire to attain the absolute, on the human scale one can only secure this through death: «Nothing can we call our own but death».

Abstract (sommario):
The philosopher Norberto Bobbio was an important exponent of Italian liberalism and exerted considerable influence on Italian political thought of the second half of the twentieth century. The article examines the few texts by Bobbio relating to cinema. These are three essays published between 1961 and 1962 concerning censorship, freedom of art and eroticism. In these essays Bobbio expresses an opinion contrary to censorship but he critically judges the spread of eroticism in cinema and literature. He therefore calls for an evolution of customs capable of setting limits on erotic excesses. The underestimation of rules – also noted by other commentators in references to other areas of his thought – is a weakness in Bobbio’s reflection of censorship

Abstract (sommario):
Richard III’s courtship of Lady Anne in William Shakespeare’s King Richard III is a blend of courtly speech and sexual extravaganza. His sexual energy and power of seduction were invented by Shakespeare to enhance the theatrical effect of this figure and, at the same time, to present Richard as a tragic character. Richard’s eroticism in Act 1 Scene 2 makes him a complicated individual. Playing a seducer is one of the guises he uses to achieve his political aims on the one hand, and, on the other, the pose of a sexually attractive lover enables him to put his masculinity to the test. Throughout the scene Richard is haunted by his deformity that, together with his villainy, makes him a stranger to the world and an enemy to his family and the court. In order to overcome his self-image of a disproportional cripple he manifests his sexuality towards Anne to boost his self-esteem and to confirm that the lady will accept him despite his obvious physical shortcomings. This article uses Georges Bataille’s theory of eroticism and erotic desire to characterize Richard as a tragic individual and to explain the reasons behind his unexpected sexual behaviour in the seduction scene.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract In Jan Sonnergaard’s novel Frysende våde vejbaner (2015) the interconnection between travelling and eroticism constitutes a crucial element of the text’s structure. On his journey the novel’s main protagonist, Jesper, a middle-aged man, experiences liberation and relief from his everyday frustrations through erotic indulgence. The journey, the indulgence as well as the erotic love are capable of healing Jesper from his severe existential crisis. Nevertheless, Jesper is heading towards disaster, as his new life eventually turns out to be based on his girlfriend’s well-thought-out lies and her deception. Consequently, Jesper’s regained optimism falls apart again. From a narrative point-of-view the article focuses on, how the aspects of travelling and erotic love are interconnected. The obsersations regarding the implications of eroticism in the novel are primarily based on Plato’s discussions of eros (vs. logos), as presented by the Greek philosopher in his Symposion. Furthermore, the significance of the space defined by travel for the experience of eroticism is examined. A number of significant contrasts inherent in the novel (logos and eros, home and abroad, the private and the public space) is also made part of the close-reading-analysis.

Abstract (sommario):
Two of the tales mentioned in the title are in many ways typical of the great collections of stories (The Canterbury Tales and Il Decamerone) to which they belong. What makes them conspicuous is no doubt the intensity of the erotic desire presented as the ultimate law which justifies even the most outrageous actions. The cult of eroticism is combined there with a cult of youth, which means disaster for the protagonists, who try to combine eroticism with advanced age. And yet the stories in question have roots in a very different tradition in which overt eroticism is punished and can only reassert itself in a chastened form, its transformation being due to sacrifices made by the lover to become reunited with the object of his love. A medieval example of the latter tradition is here the Middle English romance, Sir Orfeo. All of the three narratives are conspicuously connected by the motif of the enchanted tree. The Middle Ages are associated with a tendency to moralize ancient literature, the most obvious example of which is the French anonymous work Ovide moralisé (Moralized Ovid), and its Latin version Ovidius Moralizatus by Pierre Bersuire. In the case of The Merchant’s Tale and The Tale of the Enchanted Pear-Tree, we seem to meet with the opposite process, that is with a medieval demoralization of an essentially didactic tradition. The present article deals with the problem of how this transformation could happen and the extent of the resulting un-morality. Some use has also been made of the possible biblical parallels with the tales in question.

Abstract (sommario):
Displays of sanctified eroticism in The Minister's Wooing reveal Harriet Beecher Stowe's conviction that the body is inherently holy. The author's experience of religious paintings and her observation of French women in Europe deepened her belief that the female body is an instrument of spirituality, as can be traced in the novel.

Abstract (sommario):
This article compares the eroticism of Ronsard's Folastries (1553) with that of the Gayetez (1554) of Olivier de Magny. Although the former exercised some influence on the latter, the eroticism of the two poets turns out to be very different, as much in thematic and stylistic terms as with regard to vocabulary. Moreover, on the conceptual level, when it comes to depicting the body and erotic technique, Magny proves to be far more chaste and less risqué than his master. Nevertheless, the two share at once a belief in the aphrodisiac power of poetry and a mistrust of the sexual act itself.

Abstract (sommario):
This essay relates scenes from Beauvoir's novels to her views of female eroticism and frigidity in The Second Sex. Expressions of frigidity signal unjust power relations in Beauvoir's literature. She constructs frigidity as a symbolic means of rejecting dominance in heterosexual relations. Thus frigidity need not be interpreted, as it sometimes is, as a form of bad faith. The essay concludes with some thoughts on the relevance of Beauvoir's view of frigidity to contemporary feminism.
