This thesis is an investigation of smara. Smara is a Sanskrit word and means memory and desire. It has no equivalent in the English language and so the attempt to understand smara becomes both a linguistic and an ontological task.
The reader is introduced to the similarities and idiosyncrasies between Western and Indian notions of memory and desire and then invited into the search for the junction between memory and desire in Indian thought.
Analysis of anthropological and philosophical texts as well as a semantic mapping of Kalidasa's masterpiece entitled Sakuntala: The Ring of Recollection, reveals not only the co-existence of memory and desire in smara but also the notion of smara as a process.

It is undoubtedly one of Kafka's finest erotic scenes – the description of K.'s furtive tryst on the tap-room floor. – Wrapped in Frieda's arms, he rolls back and forth through small puddles of beer and rubbish, her small body burning in his reluctant hands. "Hours passed there," writes Kafka, "hours breathing together with a single heartbeart [gemeinsamen Herzschlags], hours in which K. constantly felt he was lost or had wandered farther into foreign lands [der Fremde] than any human being before him ..." What makes this passage so compelling is the manner in which Kafka, in four short lines, manages to distil everything ambiguous and terrifying about the erotic relation into a scene which, otherwise, could almost pass for sentimental.

Abstract (sommario):
The contact of two different cultures in the colonization process produces a zone of cultural mingling that resembles Victor Turner's concept of "liminality" referring to states or persons that elude classification. This study considers the repercussions of colonization on the lives of women characters in novels about four different "post-colonial" contexts--Native American, Jamaican, Irish and Mexican American. These novels reflect both the unique historical circumstances of each context and common themes that occur due to colonization and transcend the specific cultures such as the mourning of personal and collective loss, liminal states of consciousness and mingling of cultures. The introductory chapter examines the particular historical contexts of each novel and the theories of Abdul JanMohamed and Frantz Fanon on colonization. This study also applies the work of Victor Turner, Mary Douglas, Julia Kristeva, Gloria Anzaldua, Homi Bhaba and others to an examination of the subversive cultural formations that evolve through the boundary dissolution of colonization. Chapter two considers Louise Erdrich's novel Tracks in which the decimation of the Anishinabe people is the context for the three primary characters who have experienced personal and collective loss and respond by resisting or adapting to colonization. Chapter three examines Erna Brodber's Myal and the impact of the manichean colonial ideology on a Jamaican woman who is literally half-black and half-white. Chapter four addresses Julia O'Faolain's No Country for Young Men, a novel about two women, one who lived through the early twentieth century movement for Irish independence and the other who is her great niece, that have both been silenced and sexually controlled by colonialism and Irish Catholicism. The fifth and final chapter examines Lucha Corpi's Delia's Song about a young Chicana activist who has suffered losses on several levels and recovers by writing an autobiographical novel that weaves the personal and political issues of her life. All four novels are concerned with the liminal states of consciousness in these women characters and their efforts to both find love and tell their stories, thus counteracting the colonizer's version of history.

This dissertation examines the legacy of secrecy, silences, and the unspoken in twentieth century African American literary texts. Using a range of texts representing various eras within the genre of African American literature, this dissertation contends that secrecy is a trope and may be attributed to inherited, maintained traditional practices from West and West Central Africa. Having read a number of African American texts and connecting my personal experiences with these works, I noticed a pattern of withheld discourse throughout. Most notably, Leslie Lewis’s Telling Narratives posits a reason for this trope by examining earlier narratives, specifically nineteenth-century African American texts. She argues the master/slave relationship as the prevailing reason for the secretive motif. Yet, traditional and cultural practices noted in early African publications demonstrate that Africans were keeping secrets prior to their diasporic scatterings. By examining early West African-derived works, as well as nineteenth-century African American texts, I ground my position that secrecy as we see it evolves from or relates to early signifying and language manipulations, particular to African-derived people. Thus, the early works connect sustained homeland ties to the literature that follows, providing an explanation for the secrecy reflected in African American literature. This study highlights three types of secrets: identity, family, and sexual, all of which are interrelated and, out of one, the other type may result. The texts that best demonstrate these silences are James Weldon Johnson’s The Autobiography of an Ex-Colored Man and Nella Larsen’s Passing; James Baldwin’s Go Tell It on the Mountain and Alice Walker’s The Color Purple; and Gayl Jones’s Corregidora and Lalita Tademy’s Cane River. Each text group corresponds with a secret type. Overall, this dissertation challenges the notion that secrecy as a trope in African American literature limits itself to the master/slave relationship in the United States. The previously mentioned texts highlight a direct link to West and West Central African traditions maintained after the Middle Passage. Hence, these preserved homeland customs, including secrecy, are reflected in twentieth-century African American literature.

This thesis comprises two works: a novel ‘Libertine’ and a monograph ‘A writer’s reflection’. ‘Libertine’contemplates the eroticising and brutalising of being, and sex as currency, as need and as sacrament. It is set in a city where war is the norm, nightmare the standard, and ancient deities are called upon to witness the new order of killing technologies. The story is narrated by a woman chosen to be the consort of the General, a despostic war leader who believes that he has been chosen by the goddess Kali. She journeys deep into a horror which exists not only around her, but also within her. ‘Libertine’, by melding the erotic and the Gothic, tells the story of a woman enacting the role cast for her in the complex theatres of war. ‘A writer’s reflection’ discusses the themes of the novel, introducing the notion of existential erotica. The existential experience particular to the expression of the erotic being is discussed, and the dilemma which arises from a self yearning to merge ecstatically with an/other in order to obtain a heightened or differently valued self. This theme is elaborated in ‘Libertine’ with regard to subjectivity and the broader issues of nausea, horror and choice, drawing on the conventions of Gothic literature and apocalyptic visioning. This visioning, as eroticised death worship, is found in a Sadian credo of cruelty, the tantric rituals of Kali devotion, and the annihilating erotic excess propounded by Bataille. The monograph illustrated that ‘Libertine’ is not a re-representation of these elements, but an original contribution to the literature of erotica.

Resumo: O objetivo da pesquisa é propor uma leitura de Poemas malditos, gozosos e devotos (1984), de Hilda Hilst, a partir do tema e do paradigma do sacrifício. Segundo Hubert e Mauss (2005), o sacrifício é uma dádiva, um presente, que o homem religioso oferece a seres superiores aos quais lhe convém se ligar. Em todo o sacrifício, um objeto (a vítima) passa do domínio comum ao domínio sagrado. Bataille (1987) estabeleceu uma similitude entre o ato erótico e o sacrificial. O ato amoroso, segundo ele, não desintegra menos o ser que o sacrificante ao imolar sua vítima. O domínio do erotismo torna-se o domínio da violência, da violação. A parte feminina, enquanto vítima, se dissolve e a parte masculina toma o lugar do sacrificador, e ambos se perdem, durante a consumação do ato erótico, numa continuidade estabelecida por um ato que se fundamenta na destruição. Nesse sentido, uma vez que a obra de Hilda Hilst, desde seu surgimento, perscruta o Sagrado (COELHO, 1993), a relação entre erotismo e sacrifício é uma via privilegiada de leitura para essa poesia. Considerando-se o modo de representação do discurso poético hilstiano, que encena o jogo entre eu e tu, a leitura do conjunto evidencia a anulação do sujeito poético, configurando-se como vítima, e a figuração do Outro como grande sacrificador. O tema do sacrifício conteria em si uma possibilidade de elucidação do sentido estético dessa poesia, como a admissão mais radical de sua lógica contraditória, na qual a retórica místico-religiosa convive com o sensualismo mais desbravado. Nesse contexto, os paradoxos sobejam, fazendo comunicar o mais alto e o mais baixo, seja tematicamente, seja linguisticamente

According to Hubert and Mauss (2005), the sacrifice is a gift that religious man offers to the gods. In every sacrifice, an object becomes sacred. Bataille (1987) has established a similarity between the act erotic and the sacrificial. The loving act, according to him, not least disintegrates the being that sacrificer to slay his victim. The field of eroticism becomes the field of violence and violation. The female part, as victim, is dissolved and the male part takes the place of the sacrificer. Since Hilda Hilst's poetic scrutinizes the Sacred (COELHO, 1993), the relationship between eroticism and sacrifice is a privileged way of reading for this poetry. The theme of sacrifice would contain within itself a possibility of elucidation of aesthetic sense that poetry, such as the admission more radical in its contradictory logic, in which the rhetoric mystical-religious coexists with the sensuality more uncovered. This project is about what I am calling an “erotic epistemology” in nineteenth-century English elegiac poetry, a condition or event in a poetic text in which the discourses of love and knowledge are, to use a term Shelley liked to describe the experience of love, “intermixed.” The persistence of this inter-discourse suggests some fundamental connection between the desire for love and the desire for knowledge. Curiously, these performances of erotic longing insist urgently in the rhetorical, formal, and somatic registers of elegiac poetry in the nineteenth century. The confrontation with death that elegy stages is ideal for thinking about the relationship between erotic desire and poetic knowledge. As the limit case of a mind confronting an ultimately unknowable condition, the furthest expression of an impossible desire—the desire for the dead—elegies are love poems as well as death poems. This dissertation argues that Percy Bysshe Shelley’s Adonais for John Keats (1821), Alfred Tennyson’s In Memoriam for Arthur Hallam (1850), Algernon Charles Swinburne’s Ave Atque Vale for Charles Baudelaire (1867), and Thomas Tod Stoddart’s The Death-Wake (1831), perform the poetics of mourning as an erotic discourse, and allow an intimate understanding of a dead other that is an experience of pleasure. Much scholarship on the concept of eros considers it nearly synonymous with sexual desire and bodily pleasure. This project establishes a mode of reading elegy through its figures and forms that conceptualizes eros in these poems beyond sexuality, and without the burdens of biography and history. By stepping outside the critical confines of generic convention, literary influence, and eros-as-sexual want, this dissertation reevaluates the interpretive possibilities of erotic desire and language in a genre that is not commonly read as an amorous mode of speech. For these elegists, knowledge itself is an object of amorous desire, and epistemological want is a motive force of poetic mourning. These poems arrive at the pleasure of this knowledge through verse forms and figures of speech that perform an intimate textual relationship between the living and the dead, and when these linguistic events occur, the elegies reveal themselves as love poems.

Le fonctionnement de la société romaine reposait en partie sur la distinction de genre et de groupe social. Cela était particulièrement prégnant dans le domaine de l’érotisme. Au-dessus de tous les groupes sociaux se situait celui des hommes libres dont le rôle sexuel était celui de dominant-pénétrant. De fait, l’érotisme à la romaine peut être défini comme étant phallocentrique. Par opposition, toutes les autres catégories de personnes formaient le groupe des dominés-pénétrés. Néanmoins, le degré de soumission de chacun était déterminé par sa position sur l’échelle sociale. Les matrones avaient accès à un érotisme restreint qui se voulait procréatif. Les autres femmes, dans une certaine mesure, pouvaient être utilisées par les hommes de qui elles dépendaient comme des instruments de plaisir. Ainsi, la prostitution a toujours eu un rôle important à Rome. Bien qu’infâmes, les prostituées avaient pour mission d’assouvir les besoins charnels des hommes et pratiquaient une sexualité récréative plutôt décomplexée. The functioning of the Roman society was based partially on the distinction of genre and social group. It was particularly strong in the eroticism. Over all the social groups was situated that of the free men whose sexual role was the one of dominating - penetrating. Actually, the Roman type eroticism can be defined as being phallocentric. The Spirit of Friendship: Girlfriends in Contemporary African American Literature examines spiritual subjectivities that inspire girlfriends in three contemporary novels to journey towards actualization. It examines the girlfriend bond as a space where the Divine Spirit can flourish and assist girlfriends as they seek to become actualized. This project raises epistemological questions as it suggests that within the girlfriend dynamic, knowledge that is traditionally subjugated is formed and refined. Finally, girlfriend epistemology is considered in light of Black Girl Magic, a contemporary social and cultural movement among Black women.

Este trabalho visa à análise das poesias eróticas e satíricas de Manuel Maria Barbosa du Bocage e de sua repercussão na sociedade portuguesa do século XVIII. A ironia, por definição, propõe a inversão de enunciados, negando o contrário daquilo que se afirma ou vice-versa. Mas, tal recurso, largamente empregado pelo Poeta, extrapola a mera função de figura de pensamento, uma vez que, potencializando um poderoso arsenal crítico, propicia a construção de um discurso desestabilizador, cuja intenção é colocar em xeque a ideologia oficial. A lírica bocagiana, em sua vertente erótica e satírica, vale-se do deboche, do escracho ou da sátira desbocada para colocar às claras a distinção entre essência e aparência, em uma sociedade cuja moral se constrói a partir das crenças religiosas nem sempre professadas, quer pelo corpo social como um todo, quer pelo clero, guardião desta moral. Examinaremos, neste trabalho, os modos de representação discursiva inscritos nesta poesia. Bocage ultrapassou as fronteiras de seu tempo em poemas cuja licenciosidade, muitas vezes, não esconde uma ponta de amargura e sofrimento. Dividido entre dois mundos: o árcade, sob o signo da razão, constituído de regras rígidas; e o romântico, regido pela paixão, Elmano não esconde o desconcerto, que procura na clandestinidade a via possível para a expansão de um espírito revoltado
This work aims at the analysis of the erotic and satirical poetry of Manuel Maria Barbosa du Bocage and its impact on portuguese society of the eighteenth century. The irony, by definition, suggests a reversal of statements denying the opposite of what is stated or vice versa. But such a feature, widely used by Poet, overcomes the mere function of figure of thought, since, leveraging a powerful critical arsenal, allows the construction of a destabilizing discourse, intended to checkmate the official ideology. The bocagiana lyrical, satirical and erotic in their shed, it is debauchery, the escrache or foul-mouthed satire to put the clear distinction between essence and appearance, in a society whose moral is built from the religious beliefs do not always professed, either by the social body as a whole, either by the clergy, this moral guardian. Examine in this work, inscribed discursive modes of representation in this poetry. Bocage beyond the borders of their time in poems whose licentiousness often does not hide a hint of bitterness and suffering. Divided between two worlds: the arcade, under the sign of reason, consists of rigid rules; and the romantic, governed by passion, Elmano does not hide the bewilderment, looking in hiding the possible route to the expansion of an angry spirit

O Livro das Mil e Uma Noites, na forma como se encontra em seu grupo de manuscritos mais antigo, o chamado ramo sírio, configura-se como um grande compêndio de narrativas árabes de cunho erótico, em sua maioria. As cenas encontradas nessas narrativas, quase sempre explícitas, revelam mulheres sensualíssimas, donas de corpos desejados, e homens desejosos desses corpos e, na maioria das vezes, traídos por suas mulheres. Porém, uma narrativa em especial se destaca fortemente nesse universo carnal das Noites: a história de \"Nūruddīn ͨ Alī Bin Bakkār e Šamsunnahār\". O amor que tem lugar nessa narrativa beira o divino e inefável, e suas descrições, sempre imprecisas, revelam a dificuldade em se descrever um amor tão distante da carne e de seus desejos. Mas não é só no livro em questão que tal narrativa se destaca: dentro de toda a tradição amorosa da época a que pertence (entre os séculos IX e XI, no apogeu do Califado Abássida), tal como a conhecemos hoje, essa história de amor se mostra como única. O presente trabalho tem como objetivo analisar justamente esse destaque da narrativa de \"Nūruddīn ͨ Alī Bin Bakkār e Šamsunnahār\" dentro de seus contextos: primeiramente dentro do Livro das Mil e Uma Noites e, posteriormente, dentro da literatura amorosa abássida. Busca-se comparar a narrativa dos dois amantes com todas as outras narrativas erótico-amorosas das Mil e Uma Noites, demonstrando suas diferenças substanciais. Além disso, busca-se mapear a tradição literária amorosa abássida, demonstrando como Nūruddīn e Šamsunnahār nada têm que ver com os amantes das narrativas de amor da época. Ao final do trabalho, enumerando-se e analisando-se pormenorizadamente essas características de destaque, aproximamos a narrativa dos dois amantes a outras obras, contemporâneas a ela, que se declaram platonizantes. Assim, situamos a história de Nūruddīn e Šamsunnahār num pequeno e pouco estudado grupo de obras árabes medievais: o grupo que compartilha características que se assemelham às das obras platônicas e neoplatônicas.
The Book of the Thousand and One Nights, in the way it is written in its oldest group of manuscripts, the Syrian branch, is composed as a big compendium of erotic Arabic stories, in its majority. The scenes found in those stories, which are almost always explicit, reveal very sensual women, owners of desired bodies, and men who desire those bodies, and who are, almost always, betrayed by those women. However, one story in special contrasts from the others in this carnal universe of the Nights: the story of \"Nūruddīn ͨ Alī Bin Bakkār and Šamsunnahār\". The love described in this narrative approaches the divine and ineffable love, and its descriptions, always imprecise, reveal the difficulty of describing a love, which is so distant from the body and its desires. But, the narrative of the two lovers is not a highlight only in this book: in the whole erotic tradition to which it belongs (the Abbasid love, between the IX and X centuries), this story shows itself as a unique one. The present dissertation aims to analyse these highlights of the narrative of \"Nūruddīn ͨ Alī Bin Bakkār and Šamsunnahār\" in its contexts: first, inside the Book of the Thousand and One Nights and, after that, inside the erotic Abbasid literature. We do it by comparing the story of the two lovers to all the other erotic narratives of the Nights, demonstrating all the substantial differences among them. Besides that, we draw a map of the whole erotic Abbasid literary tradition, demonstrating how Nūruddīn and Šamsunnahār have nothing in common with the other Abbasid lovers, described in the erotic stories of that time. At the end of the dissertation, by enumerating and analysing carefully those characteristics of highlight, we approach the narrative of the two lovers to other works, contemporary to it, which declare themselves to be platonic. By doing that, we situate the story of Nūruddīn and Šamsunnahār in a very small and not studied group of Arabic medieval works: the group, which shares similar characteristics with the platonic and neoplatonic works.

Privilegia-se nesta dissertação a leitura e interpretação de Avalovara, romance de Osman Lins, sob a ótica de um tema universal da literatura o amor humano, seguindo-se as pistas deixadas pelo autor em entrevistas e analisando-se, de modo especial, sua configuração poética na narrativa. Tendo em vista o intenso conteúdo sexual do romance, estuda-se as várias dimensões do amor carnal, desde o uso político do corpo até seu aspecto mítico e cosmogônico. Para tanto, primeiro conceitua-se literatura erótica para depois contextualizar-se Avalovara na tradição ocidental no século XX. Em seguida, são apontadas suas fontes, que remontam à Bíblia e à tradição hindu do tantra. Unindo-as, Lins cria um amor concreto e carnal, capaz de levar os amantes a reencontrar a unidade original. Além disso, ao incorporar a geometria simbólica do tantra na estrutura do romance, Lins confere à literatura um poder mágico até então encontrado apenas em textos religiosos e místicos. De modo que esta dissertação, fundamentada também em teorias da narrativa e do romance e numa abordagem comparatista, tem sobretudo uma perspectiva crítica: mostrar a especificidade de Avalovara, dentro da tradição da literatura erótica e o seu papel no contexto da literatura brasileira, nos anos da ditadura militar.
This dissertation focuses on the reading and interpretation of Osman Lins novel Avalovara based on a universal literary theme human love -, following the clues left by the author in interviews and analyzing especially its poetic configuration in the narrative. Taking into consideration the intense sexual component of the novel, it studies the various aspects of carnal love, from the political use of the body to its cosmogony and its mythical aspect. In order to do so, it first defines erotic literature to then position Avalovara in the twentieth century occidental tradition. Afterwards, it indicates its sources, which go back to the Bible and the Hindu tradition of the tantra. In uniting them, Lins creates a carnal and concrete love, capable of taking the lovers back to the original unity. In incorporating the symbolic geometry of tantra in the novels structure, Lins gives literature a magical power until then only seen in religious and mystical texts. Moreover, this dissertation, also based in narrative and novel theories and in a comparative approach, has above all a critical perspective: to show Avalovaras uniqueness in the tradition of erotic literature and its role in Brazilian literature, during the military dictatorship.

No final do século I a.C., a Elegia Erótica Romana desafiou os gregos e as convenções poéticas apresentando um poeta-amante que cantava suas aventuras amorosas em primeira pessoa. Como se isso não bastasse, esse eu-elegíaco se dedicava à puella como se tal tarefa fosse uma militia, um seruitium amoris, e que exigia tempo integral. Galo, Propércio e Tibulo nos apresentaram suas dominas e se negaram a servir à pátria. Ovídio foi além: seguiu seus predecessores mas fez com que seus leitores aprendessem a entender o papel de cada uma das normas na construção desse gênero. Escreveu seu primeiro livro, Amores, e , a partir daí, começou a traçar um caminho ascendente: queria sua Elegia elevada, não apenas média. Para isso, produziu recusationes, elegias programáticas e, o mais importante, confluiu gêneros. Fez uso da Epistolografia, da Retórica, da Didática e de personas e exempla míticos para compor Heroides, Ars amatoria e Remedia amoris. Nesta dissertação, mostra-se a trajetória do poeta na elevação da Elegia Erótica de Ovídio.
At the end of the 1st. century b.C., Latin Erotic Elegy challenged Greeks and poetic conventions when portrayed a man, poet and lover, talking, in the first person, about his adventures: he also dedicated himself to a puella as if it were a militia, his seruitium amoris, which was a full-time job. Gallus, Propertius and Tibullus introduced us to their dominas and did not (want to) serve their nation. Ovid did more than that: he followed his predecessors but made his readers learn the role of each of the principles of the genre. He wrote his first book, Amores, and, from then on, delineated an ascendant path: he wanted his Elegy to be high, not only something that depicted an average subject. In order to achieve it, he composed recusationes, programmatic elegies and, most important of all, he converged genres: he was able to use Epistolography, Rhetoric, Didactic and mythological personas and exempla to write Heroides, Ars amatoria and Remedia amoris. In this dissertation, we show his trajectory in the elevation of Ovids Erotic Elegy.

O objetivo desta tese é um estudo comparativo dos romances Fanny Hill, or Memoirs of a Woman of Pleasure (1748-1749), do inglês John Cleland, e Margot La Ravaudeuse (1750), do francês Jean-Charles Fougeret de Monbron. Os dois romances fazem parte do conjunto de narrativas eróticas libertinas que inundaram o emergente mercado livreiro europeu durante o Iluminismo e contam as memórias de duas jovens prostitutas respectivamente em Londres e Paris em meados do século. Partindo do pressuposto segundo o qual as duas narrativas se organizam num contínuo que oscila entre a sociabilidade e a individualidade, o objetivo desta análise comparativa é compreender como estes dois temas, fundamentais na experiência setecentista e no processo de formação do romance moderno, são formalizados nas memórias de Margot e Fanny Hill através de procedimentos estruturais recorrentes na literatura da libertinagem.
The aim of this dissertation is a comparative study of the novels Fanny Hill, or Memoirs of a Woman of Pleasure (1748-1749), by John Cleland, and Margot la Ravaudeuse (1750), by Jean-Charles Fougeret de Monbron. Both novels are part of the body of erotic libertine narratives that flooded the emerging European book market during the Enlightenment and tell the memoirs of two young prostitutes respectively in London and Paris during the mid-18th-century. Assuming that the two narratives are organized according to a continuum which oscillates between sociability and individuality, the objective of this comparative analysis is to understand how these fundamental themes in 18th-century life as well as in the rise of the modern novel are formalized in the memoirs of Margot and Fanny through reccurring structural procedures found in libertine literature.

Esta pesquisa visou compreender a cultura do estupro e a consequente erotização da infância construídas pela sociedade patriarcal e representadas na literatura infantil e juvenil pelo romance Sapato de salto, de Lygia Bojunga, publicado em 2006. Assim, partindo da hipótese interpretativa de que a mídia tem uma grande influência na erotização e objetificação da criança, buscou perceber como a representação da cultura do estupro e a erotização da infância são construídas socialmente pelas mídias e reafirmadas na idealização da feminilidade e da masculinidade, em que se destaca uma espécie de amadurecimento precoce da infância como forma de justificativa para a violência sexual. Desse modo, a relevância desse trabalho se evidencia na necessidade de discutir e denunciar os crimes sexuais contra a infância, em que se deve dar voz àqueles que não têm espaços de fala na sociedade e estão vulneráveis dentro de uma cultura que naturaliza a erotização dos seus corpos e culpabiliza as vítimas pelos casos de pedofilia e prostituição infantil. Para tanto, utilizou-se das teorias feministas como base para se discutir as questões ligadas ao gênero presentes no romance, além disso, houve a necessidade de construção de um quadro teórico que trate das relações da obra com um ambiente tecnológico que enaltece o corpo feminino como objeto. Nesse sentido, utilizou-se da pesquisa exploratória e de levantamento bibliográfico sobre o assunto, possibilitando aprofundar o tema proposto, realizando uma análise de cunho qualitativo. Verifica-se que o sapato de salto utilizado pela personagem tia Inês e posteriormente pela personagem Sabrina nos momentos de prostituição, denota a tentativa de crescimento precoce para justificar a prostituição de uma criança. Assim, procurou compreender como é construído pela autora a simbologia do sapato em contraposição aos pés descalços, e como a sociedade de consumo enfatiza esse objeto, influenciando através das mídias, a erotização da infância, com a necessidade de evidenciar um discurso que transforma meninas precocemente em objetos sexuais. Além disso, verificou-se como a representação do sapato no romance remete intertextualmente ao conto de fadas Cinderela, que é recriado inesgotavelmente pela literatura e por diversas mídias. Destarte, essa pesquisa contribui para discussão e compreensão da cultura do estupro e da erotização da infância presentes na sociedade patriarcal, enfatizando a necessidade de reflexão sobre a temática e da busca pela proteção da infância e pelo fim da impunidade dos agressores sexuais. Além disso, a literatura se destacou como representação dessa sociedade que naturaliza a violência sexual.
This research aimed to understand rape culture and the resulting eroticization of childhood built by the patriarchal society and represented in children’s literature, here in the novel “Sapato de Salto”, written by brazilian author Lygia Bojunga, and published in 2006. Based on interpretive hypothesis that the media has a great influence on the eroticization and objectification of the child, it sought to understand how the rape culture and the eroticization of hildhood are socially constructed by the media and reiterated in the idealization of femininity and masculinity, a kind of early maturity of childhood was highlighted as a form of justification for sexual violence. Thus, the relevance of this work is demonstrated in the need to discuss and to denounce child sexual abuse. It hould give voice to those who do not have speech space in the society and are vulnerable within a culture that naturalizes the eroticization of their bodies and blames the victims of pedophilia and child prostitution. For this purpose, feminist theories were used as a basis for discussing gender issues present in the novel, in addition, there was a necessity to construct a theoretical framework that deals with the relations between the novel and a technological environment that validates the female body as a sexual object. Therefore, it was used exploratory research and bibliographical survey about the subject, made it possible to deepen the proposed theme, carrying out a qualitative analysis. It was verified that the high heel shoe, used by the character aunt Inês and later by the character Sabrina, as prostitute, denotes the attempt of early maturity to justify the child prostitution. Thus, it sought to understand how the author builds the symbology of the shoe in contrast to the bare feet and how the consumer society emphasizes this object, influencing through the media the eroticization of childhood, in a need to highlight a discourse that transforms girls early into sexual objects. In addition, it was also verified how the representation of the shoe in the novel refers to the fairy tale of Cinderella, in a intertextual way. This tale is recreated inexhaustibly by the literature and by many other medias. Thus, this research contributes to the discussion and understanding of rape culture and the eroticization of childhood present in the patriarchal society, emphasizing the necessity for reflection about the theme and the pursuit for the protection of childhood and the end of the impunity of sexual aggressors and even more, literature has been stood out as a representation of this society that naturalizes sexual violence.

La present tesi doctoral estudia la representació de l'erotisme en la producció d'Ana Rossetti (San Fernando, 1950). Concretament, se centra en el corpus format pels Los devaneos de Erato (1980), Indicios vehementes (1985), Devocionario (1986), Plumas de España (1988), Yesterday (1988) i Alevosías (1991). Aquesta delimitació ve imposada per la decisió d'estudiar un fenomen molt concret: l'auge del gènere eròtic que es va produir després de la fi del règim dictatorial. No obstant això, com demostra la producció rossettiana, a l'apogeu de les manifestacions eròtiques i sicalíptiques de les dècades dels anys setanta i vuitanta li va seguir un ràpid declivi. Principalment perquè aquest gènere va deixar de ser nou, però, en certa manera, també pel fet que després de la consolidació del sistema democràtic es van normalitzar els nous costums en matèria sexual. En última instància, aquesta tesi analitza la producció eròtica d'Ana Rossetti a través dels següents eixos temàtics: l'educació sentimental i sexual rebuda durant l'Espanya nacionalcatòlica, l'alliberament sexual en el context de la «Movida madrileña» i els esdeveniments que van propiciar el desencantament democràtic, entre ells, l'aparició del VIH/sida.
La presente tesis doctoral estudia la representación del erotismo en la producción de Ana Rossetti (San Fernando, 1950). Concretamente, se centra en el corpus formado por Los devaneos de Erato (1980), Indicios vehementes (1985), Devocionario (1986), Plumas de España (1988), Yesterday (1988) y Alevosías (1991). Esta delimitación viene impuesta por la decisión de estudiar un fenómeno muy concreto: el auge del género erótico que se produjo tras el fin del régimen dictatorial. No obstante, como demuestra la producción rossettiana, al apogeo de las manifestaciones eróticas y sicalípticas de las décadas de los años setenta y ochenta le siguió un rápido declive. Principalmente porque este género dejó de ser novedoso, pero, en cierto modo, también debido a que tras la consolidación del sistema democrático se normalizaron las nuevas costumbres en materia sexual. En última instancia, esta tesis analiza la producción erótica de Ana Rosssetti a través de los siguientes ejes temáticos: la educación sentimental y sexual recibida durante la España nacionalcatólica, la liberación sexual en el contexto de la «Movida madrileña» y los acontecimientos que propiciaron el desencanto democrático, entre ellos, la aparición del VIH/sida.
This doctoral thesis studies the representation of eroticism in the work of Ana Rossetti (San Fernando, 1950). Specifically, it focuses on the corpus formed by Los devaneos de Erato (1980), Indicios vehementes (1985), Devocionario (1986), Plumas de España (1988), Yesterday (1988) and Alevosías (1991). This delimitation is imposed by the decision to study a very specific phenomenon: the rise of the erotic genre that took place after the end of the dictatorial regime. However, as Rossetti's production shows, the apogge of the erotic manifestations of the 1970s and 1980s was followed by a rapid decline. Mainly because this genre ceased to be novel, but also because after the consolidation of the democratic system, the new habits in sexual matters were normalised. Ultimately, this thesis analyses Ana Rosssetti's erotic production through the following thematic axes: the sentimental and sexual education received during National Catholic Spain, sexual liberation in the context of the "Movida madrileña" and the events that led to democratic disenchantment, among them, the emergence of HIV/AIDS.

While looking to the body and finding it engraved by cultural, imaginary and power-related texts through a discourse embodied in itself, this research proposes a new vertiginous approach to it by analyzing the following works: Poesia completa II, more specifically, Educa??o sentimental, and Novas cartas portuguesas. Such transgressive and performatic works are from Maria Teresa Horta (1937-), Portuguese writer, who proposes a new education by a renewed language: a sentimental education spawned from the erotic element. Starting from the deconstruction of the view over the spoiled body and exposed in Novas cartas portuguesas, from the poetic texts in Educa??o sentimental, as well as in remaining ones in Poesia completa II, Horta disassembles and reassembles the body, giving a new meaning to the symbols that surround us and our experiences. Other than proposing to all, men and women, such new meaning of the behavior and current practices models, Horta s education allows, through a performance action, the construction of a stage for female identity, free from the phallic influence. A new identity, able to handle all holy and profane characteristics of women, discarding the chromatic lens of sin. Horta s poetry emerges as a new proposal of literary labor
Esta pesquisa, ao passo que olha para o corpo e o enxerga tatuado pelos textos da cultura, do imagin?rio e do poder, atrav?s de um discurso que se inscreve nele, vem propor uma vertigem do olhar sobre o mesmo atrav?s da an?lise das obras: Poesia completa II, especificamente, Educa??o sentimental, e Novas cartas portuguesas. Tais obras transgressoras e perform?ticas s?o de Maria Teresa Horta (1937-), escritora portuguesa, a qual vem propor, ao n?vel de uma linguagem renovada, uma educa??o outra: uma educa??o sentimental, a qual nasce do elemento er?tico. Partindo da desconstru??o do olhar sobre o corpo marcado e denunciado atrav?s de Novas cartas portuguesas, e dos textos po?ticos da obra Educa??o sentimental, bem como dos demais que v?m compor a obra Poesia completa II, Horta desmonta e remonta o corpo, re-significando a m?scara signal?tica a qual nos envolve e envolve as nossas viv?ncias. In his most popular prose work, Mary Magdalens Funeral Teares (1591), English Jesuit Robert Southwell adapts the Mary Magdalene tradition by incorporating the meditative practices of St. Ignatius Loyola coupled with the Petrarchan language of poetry. Thus, he creates a prose work that ministered to Catholic souls, appealed to Protestant audiences, and initiated the literature of tears in England. Southwell readapts the traditional image of Mary Magdalene for a Catholic Early Modern audience by utilizing the techniques of Jesuit meditation, which later flourished in the weeper texts of Richard Crashaw and George Herbert. His vividly imagined scenes also employ the Petrarchan and Ovidian language of longing and absence and coincide with both traditional and mystic early church writers such as Bernard and Augustine. Through this combination, Southwell’s Marie Magdalens Funeral Teares resonated with Catholics deprived of both ministry and the presence of Christ in the Eucharist. These contributions solidify Southwell’s place as a pivotal figure in the religious and literary contexts of Early Modern England.

Cette thèse a pour objectif d’étudier la présence, dans l’œuvre de Robbe-Grillet, de personnages stéréotypés récupérés de la paralittérature. Les stéréotypes dont il sera question dans ce travail sont : le solitaire romantique, l’errant citadin, le justicier criminel, le détective, le tueur, le trio des romans de la jalousie, la prostituée, le voyeur pervers, la stripteaseuse et le conteur. Au terme de cette "exploration", nous arriverons à la conclusion suivante : dans son ensemble, l’œuvre de Robbe-Grillet est ancrée dans la stéréotypie. Cependant, nous découvrirons qu’il ne s’agit pas là d’une apologie du stéréotype. Mais simplement d’une prise en compte de son action dans la culture contemporaine et du rôle de celle-ci dans l’élaboration du discours de l’œuvre
This thesis aims at investigating the presence of stereotypical characters in the work of Robbe-Grillet retrieved from the paralitterature. Stereotypes that will be discussed in this work are: the romantic loner, wandering the city, the vigilante crime, the detective, the killer, the trio of novels of the jealousy, the prostitute, the perverse voyeur, the stripper, and the storyteller. After this “exploration”, we reach the flowing conclusion: as a whole, the work of Robbe-Grillet is rooted in the stereotype. However, we will discover that this is not an apology for stereotype. But simply taking into account its action in contemporary culture and the role of the latter in the elaboration discourse of the work
