Abstract It is well known that Byzantine and post-Byzantine manuscript letter collections had a didactic function serving as manuals on epistolary art. An important task is to examine how and to what extent this function influenced the structure of collections and the method of reworking epistolary material. The subject of the present paper is the letter collection surviving in cod. Heid. Pal. gr. 356 ( 13th c. ). The collection contains Pseudo-Libanios’ ‘Epistolary Styles’, letters of Phalaris, Libanios, Gregory of Nazianzos, Symeon Logothetes, Michael Psellos and other authors. The collection is analyzed in terms of its content and structure. Its following features are revealed: Firstly, from letters of different authors, those are selected that correspond to common epistolary situations. Most of the letters presented in the collection are recommending, reproaching for silence, accompanying the gift, etc. Secondly, letters belonging to the same type or epistolary situation are often grouped together. Thirdly, letters are reworked so that it is more convenient to use them as models. Gregory of Nazianzos’ letters are presented in short excerpts, many of them being transformed so that they serve as models for certain letter types – friendly, commendatory, etc.

Abstract: The introductory letter of Petrarch's collection of prose epistles (Epistolae Familiares) includes a number of traditional programmatic elements, including a dedication to his close friend Ludwig Van Kempen, a narrative describing the collection's genesis, and a defence of its style and contents, rooted in the example of Cicero's letters to Atticus, Quintus, and Brutus, which Petrarch had discovered some five years earlier. In other ways, Fam. 1.1 is an absolutely unprecedented introduction to an epistolary collection — ultimately staging within the letter a kind of ‘conversion narrative’ that transforms the yet-uncompleted collection into an instantiation of the spiritual journey of its author.

It is my contention that the poetic collection Les Regrets by Joachim Du Bellay is a product of the humanist epistolary heritage. This essay attempts to demonstrate not only the importance of the epistolary and secretarial traditions for our understanding of Les Regrets, but also how Du Bellay uses them to elaborate a new poetics. Specifically, beginning with the epistolary and secretarial traditions in Europe, this study then moves to a discussion of the epistolary genre in French literary history and subsequently to the figure of the secretary in Renaissance poetry before focusing on Du Bellay's correspondance with Ronsard.

The purpose of the publication is to highlight the activities of S. Kulzhynskyi in the process of gathering a collection of pysankas for the Lubny Museum of K. M. Skarzhynska, as well as to prepare for publication the famous album-catalogue «Description of the Collection of Folk Pysankas» (1899) through the prism of scientific and epistolary heritage. At the same time, the main task is to introduce it into scientific circulation; to replenish the source and historiographical base. The scientific novelty of the study is that it is the first to introduce the epistolary heritage of S. Kulzhynskyi related to the preparation for the publication of an album-catalogue of the collection of pysankas into scientific circulation. The late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries were marked by a significant rise in interest in Ukrainian folk art, including pysanka. Many researchers developed programmes for collecting information about pysankas, and private and museum collections began to form. In a short period of time, a number of publications by such well-known researchers as M. Sumtsov, V. Yastrebov, M. Korduba, and others were published. However, the most noteworthy is S. Kulzhynskyi's work on the formation of the collection of pysankas in the Lubny Museum of K. M. Skarzhynska and its processing with the subsequent publication of the catalogue. His work is still of interest to researchers today. The album-catalogue also became a source of knowledge and revival of pysankas in Ukraine in the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries for many pysankas masters. The formation of S. Kulzhynskyi's views on pysankas and his desire to work on the collection's catalogue are revealed to some extent by his letters to M. Sumtsov, which are reproduced in the appendices. They provide information about the work on the catalogue, the problems faced by the author, etc. In the future, it is worthwhile (if possible) to find and publish M. Sumtsov's letters to S. Kulzhynskyi, which would reveal the famous ethnographer's comments to the author of the catalogue on its publication and the extent to which the latter listened to his advice and suggestions.

Epistolary writing is important in the history of statehood, diplomacy and science, especially in the history of our country, which has its ancient roots and huge scientific potential. These letters were considered one of the fields of knowledge, which included a scientific manual or a collection of written documents for clerks (calligraphers), known as the “Munshaot”. These manuals and collections help enrich our understanding of the history, literature and social, economic and political life of our country.Given the foregoing, this article researches the works of the epistolary genre - the Munshaot, which were written during the life and after the lifetime of Alisher Navoi, in particular, “Munshaoti Abdulloh Marvorid”; the authors identity, the manuscript of the work and its role in the history of Uzbek literature which are provided in the article.Munshaot (Arabic. Compiled letters, that is, a collection of letters) is one of the genres of oriental poetry, collected letters of clerks, written in verse or prose.

The review considers two new editions, connected by the theme of autographs, - “The Bibliophile Garland to Anna Akhmatova. To the 125th Birth Anniversary: the Autographs in the Collection of M. Seslavinsky” and “The Art of Autograph. Inscriptions of Writers and Artists in the Private Collections of Russian Bibliophiles”, published in 2014-2015. Description and identification of the autograph, its introduction into scientific use, as well as its study are relevant problems of today, as the accumulated handwritten material of this kind requires samples of cataloguing. The Russian collectors propose to comprehend such material accumulated in private collections, publish previously unknown autographs, manuscripts, epistolary heritage of Russian poets, writers and artists. Peer-reviewed publications are required in the work of experts - literary critics, art historians, book historians, culturologists, students of specialized educational institutions, and all the interested in the history of the Russian culture.

Abstract The letters of Phalaris are among the letter collections assembled by Rudolf Hercher in his, ‘Epistolographi graeci’, published in 1873. They differ from other collections in that volume in the size of the corpus ( 148 letters ) and the breadth of the manuscript tradition ( more than 132 manuscripts ). Moreover, the number and the order of the letters vary greatly from one manuscript to another. These characteristics explain why there is no modern critical edition of the letters of Phalaris. This paper addresses a methodological issue: how can we get a comprehensive view of the transmission of the letters of Phalaris? It examines these letters from the perspective of the collection, given that the letters of Phalaris are often transmitted within manuscripts that combine several corpora of letters, thus forming large epistolary collections. This paper shows to what extent the results obtained by the editors of other epistolary texts can be applied to the letters of Phalaris and what is gained, on a literary level, by replacing these letters in their context of transmission.

The peculiarity of the epistolary heritage is revealed in the variety of genre forms of the letter, in the depth of philosophical searches, in the inexhaustibility and sincerity of feelings, in linguistic stylistic experiments and careful attitude to epistolary canons.Letters, as is known, form the basis of epistolary texts. Among other types of texts, they are distinguished by a clear orientation to a specifi c type of addressee and provision of correspondence communication. The construction of such texts depends on many factors: the presence of a textual tradition, the situation of hypothetical per-ception of the text, the addressee, forms of implementation and distribution of the text, and other subjective conditions of epistolary communication.B. Grinchenko’s worldview and language concept is defi ned in a signifi cant creative heritage, which covers the following issues: the signifi cant role of language in the develop-ment of national culture and in the self-determination of the people; the formation of public opinion against the restrictions and prohibitions of the Ukrainian language by tsarism; devel-opment of theoretical foundations regarding the sources of enrichment and ways of develop-ment of the Ukrainian literary language; attitude to spelling practice; standardization of the Ukrainian literary language; creative communication with other writers.In the letters of B. Hrinchenko, structural and semantic features typical for Ukrainian epistolary are refl ected, which are creatively reworked in specifi c texts. Each letter can be considered as a separate completed act of communication.Ukraine became the key image-symbol in the correspondence between Borys Grinchenko and Trokhym Zinkivskyi. Ukraine, the Ukrainian language, Ukrainian writers are the key points in B. Grinchenko’s correspondence, as they coincide with the life position of the author of the letters. Borys Hrinchenko’s correspondence is a vivid example of how obsessed a person must be, who laid a brick in the foundations of the independent new state of Ukraine.

The chronology of the receipt of materials from the epistolary archive to the Department of manuscripts of the Museum is traced. The author refers to the names of the persons who directly handed the materials to the archive, and who accepted and processed them. The bibliophilic priorities of the museum curator . G.P. Georgievsky and V.V. Rozanov became the basis for supplementing the epistolary collection “From the Archive of V.V. Rozanov”. The author mentions the error in dating the letter of V.V. Rozanov to G.P. Georgievsky., written to accompany the last part of the epistolary passed to the Museum inter vivos. The text of the letter is published for the first time. The importance of V.V. Rozanov's review of the book in the «Novoye Vremya» journal at the beginning of the twentieth century is emphasized. The author's approach to the systematization of the correspondents’ letters for their subsequent passing over to Rumyantsev Museum is shown. The author provides concise information on the contents of certain collections of letters from Rozanov’s correspondents. The main themes of V.V. Rozanov's epistolary communication with the authors of the letters are outlined. The author takes note of Rozanov’s special attitude to the selection of letters from the archive of correspondence for further publication. in the “Literary Exiles” series.. In the forefront there are letters from Church leaders and the thinker’s allies in the field of legislation on family relations. Despite the fact that in Kazakh linguistics there are many studies of the language of individual poets and writers, scientific studies of the epistolary language of individual writers in correspondence are currently developing at a certain pace. The epistolary prose of the writer, collected in the fiftieth volume of the fifty-volume complete collection of works by M. Auezov, is an integral part of our national culture, his letters, written as a writer-scientist, as a family member, as an ordinary person, reveal the creative face of a person, the historical events of his period life and people of those times, gives an idea of his environment. Using anthroponomy in personal correspondence, language learners will get acquainted with the use of anthroponomy - vocatives, learn the features of their use in different contexts, identify the epistolary genre and M. Auezov's personal signature in this genre. The purpose of the article is to find out the specifics of anthroponomical vocatives in the epistolary discourse of M. Auezov, to determine the communicative-functional and pragmatic function of these linguistic means in his idiostyle. To do this, all proper names in the letters of M. Auezov were collected and grouped according to their lexical and grammatical features, by means of content analysis, common variants of the formation of vocatives and the frequency of their use were clarified, and the peculiarity of their pragmatic use was determined.

The article is an introductory part of a larger study of the letter book of Luka Pavlev - a little-known Revival educator from Pirdop and the author of an 1858 textbook intended to introduce students to the art of epistolary. It was pragmatic in its nature, as it contained 20 templates for letters, preceded by metatexts informing about the sender, the recipient and the content of the letter. The ways of addressing the recipient, the content and signing of the letters, as well as the proper names appearing in them, are commented on against the background of the literary-linguistic situation in the 1950s and the previously published letter books.

In this article, I explore performances of letter writing within the archives of the London-based theatre company Clean Break, who work with justice-experienced women and women at risk. Clean Break’s archive at the Bishopsgate Institute in London contains an extensive collection of production ephemera and letters. Charting the company’s development across forty years of theatre productions, public advocacy, and work in prisons and community settings, these materials of the archive—strategic documents, annotated playscripts and rehearsal notes, production photography and correspondence—reveal the acute importance of the letter to people living on the immediate borderlands of the prison. Despite these generative resonances, however, the epistolary form is very rarely used in Clean Break’s theatre: as the archive reveals, since the company was founded by two women in HM Prison Askham Grange in 1979, stagings of letters have occurred in only a handful of instances. In this archival exploration of the epistolary in three works by Clean Break—a film broadcast by the BBC, a play staged at the Royal Court, and a circular chain-play written by women in three prisons—I investigate what lifeworlds beyond prison epistolary forms in performance propose.

Heroides 15, Sappho's letter to Phaon, is an enigma in its present context for many different reasons. What is Sappho doing, heterosexualised, at the end of a string of elegiac epistles written by women plucked straight from myth and each given their fifteen minutes of fame? Despite the mythology that grew up around her, of which Phaon was a part, Sappho was a real woman and a real writer, the Greek love poet par excellence; not only that, she was and is a figure who, in her poetic persona at least, is famous for communicating her love for women, not for the local ferryman. This Sappho looks very written, yet as the only heroine–writer, and as the love-poet often cited as Ovid's influential predecessor, she can represent the culmination and reification of the Heroides' illusion of female authorship.In doing so, Sappho functions as the crucial figure in a collection of poems in which the Ovidian author writes in disguise; in what becomes finally a life or death situation, her poem radically questions the definition and definability of authorship, gender and identity. We are constantly asked, and are prompted to ask: Just how authentic, or how written is Sappho in this self-conscious erotic alignment of His ‘n’ Hers, Roman and Greek love poets? What is it for an Ovidian author conspicuously to write, through and over, the poetess whose work he recommends should be read alongside his own, and whose influence on his own writing and love-affairs he hints at on several occasions?

These fourteen ostraca bear writing exercises (‘school texts’), primarily alphabets and alphabetic letters or sequences, personal names, and epistolary formulae. Such exercises were not included by W.E. Crum and H.I. Bell in their 1922 publication of texts from the site.

This article explores Poggio Bracciolini's letters to Niccolò Niccoli from a variety of perspectives: it looks at what imitation meant for Poggio, examines the letters’ commentary on the manuscript culture of the early Quattrocento, discusses Poggio's efforts to craft a personal voice, and traces the interplay of optimism and pessimism in the letters, an interplay common to humanist texts of this period. By bringing together these different perspectives, the article articulates the range of ways in which one scholar used his epistolary collection to shape his own persona, connect himself to Ciceronian precedents, and create norms and expectations for a developing intellectual community.

Abstract (sommario):
The article deals with Adam Ziemianin’s epistolary poetry (bringing both the subject of letters and imitating their formal qualities), which is discussed as a collection of literary events. Such an interpretation draws attention to the performativity of this writing, that is, its causative function, which results in the actualization of the text through the reader’s personal experience. Therefore, the interpretation here takes into account not only Ziemianin’s poems, but also their popularity as songs performed by the group Stare Dobre Małżeństwo. The most important conclusion presented in this paper focuses on the paradoxes of epistolary poetry: the evocation of both presence and absence, synchrony and asynchrony, combining private with public, as well as merging the literary dimension with real existence. Most of these paradoxes are motivated by the desire to rescue love and overcome death, as indicated by the symbolism of the letter and the well – serving as life-giving mediators.

Abstract: Eustache Deschamps's famous ballade praising Chaucer as "great translator" is best understood in the context of the early French humanist milieu whose literary values, linguistic markers, and transcultural reach it displays. With this epistolary ballade, written in the late 1390s and avant-garde at the time, Deschamps wanted to establish a literary friendship and an exchange of poetic writings with Chaucer, whom Deschamps perceived as a fellow humanist poet-translator, and whom he lauded for translating eloquence into the English language. Evidence for this new interpretation comes from comparisons of Deschamps's Ballade 285 with early fifteenth-century epistolary exchanges in French verse and prose, including letters from the debate over Jean de Meun's Roman de la Rose and the exchange of poetic praise between Deschamps and Christine de Pizan; from the Latin epistolary exchanges of the last quarter of the fourteenth century between leading French and Italian humanists Jean de Montreuil and Coluccio Salutati; and also from Petrarch's Latin letters to long-dead classical authors, which permitted no reply. Although Ballade 285 survives only in the collection of 300 "moral ballades" at the beginning of the huge manuscript of his collected works in Paris, Bibliothèque nationale de France, Fr. 840, Deschamps must have valued it, for this is the only section whose content he is thought to have selected and ordered himself before his death in 1404.

Even though scholars are yet to agree on the authorship of the epistolary collection "Erotic Letters", it is usually ascribed to Aristaenetus and it was probably written in the 6th century AD. The letters of the collection mostly depict extramarital affairs (with "hetairai", slaves or married women), often accompanied by conflicts fuelled by (sometimes justified) jealousy or either partner’s lack of interest because there are better options: e.g. a "hetaira" gets a richer client, a client is seduced by a younger or better-looking girl, etc. Therefore, most reconciliation efforts in the "Letters" are in fact the lovers’ attempts to either get back together and improve their relationships or to end them in a civilised manner or otherwise. The focus of the research is on the analysis of the protagonists’ reconciliation strategies and methods (such as verbal persuasion, lying, causing sympathy, projecting guilt onto somebody else, letter-writing, the use of male or female mediators, etc.) and their effectiveness. The final goals are: to point out the most common reconciliation methods employed, to investigate whether or not the men and women use similar methods, to check which gender is more likely to choose indirect reconciliation methods, such as the use of mediators or writing and sending letters, and to examine which gender is generally more successful at reconciliation (as well as to explain why that is so). Additionally, the author’s depictions of reconciliation and his use of reconciliation as a narrative tool are put into a wider context through a comparison with other epistolary collections of this type, the originality of these depictions is scrutinised and probable models (within and outside of the subgenre) are proposed.

Drawing on the villa letters and the collection as a whole for both topographical description and self-styling, Toland moulds himself after an intensely ruralist – and strikingly Horatian – Pliny. This article reads Epsom together with Toland's translations from the Epistles (1711–12) as a case study in reception which can also shed fresh light on Pliny's own epistolary self-portraiture.

In his exilic poems Ovid shapes a crisis of his poetic identity by reifying his literary practice with some autobiographical concerns. The poet of metamorphosis metrically associated the narration of his exile to his epistolary and erotic corpus. Tristia and Ex Ponto’s intratextual connections can be read as an invitation to reaffirmthe literary value of Ovid’s writing. From a stylistic approach, I show the crucial role of Ex Ponto in the study of Ovid’s dynamic of self-reception. This last collection simultaneously achieves the poet’s exilic works and his production as a whole.

John Apokaukos (c. 1155–1233) was an outstanding church and political figure, humanist and writer. The large collection of Apokaukos’ letters is an invaluable historical source and liter-ary monument. In this paper, the letters of John Apokaukos are considered in the context of the letter genre and its canons: it is explored how John handles the traditional motifs of Byzantine epistolary etiquette. The messages written in three common situations are ana-lyzed. These situations are receiving a letter, sending gifts and receiving gifts. Apokaukos’ closeness to the epistolary tradition of the 11th–12th centuries is revealed, parallels are pointed out with the letters of Michael Psellos, Theophylaktos of Ohrid, Michael Choniates and others. It is demonstrated that Apokaukos uses a wide range of etiquette motifs, but many of his letters are original: sometimes he interprets traditional motifs in a new way and revives obsolete clichés, and sometimes completely deviates from the established rules. Traditional formulae become a reason for a literary game and friendly humor: Apokaukos often resorts to irony and grotesque, associated with the use of quotations from ancient lit-erature and the Bible in a humble context of everyday life.

This article considers the Kazan period in V.K. Malmberg’s life. The circle of Kazan secondary school teachers and university lecturers in the intellectual space of Kazan during the second half of the 19th century is reconstructed. The influence of the family members and the German diaspora in Kazan on the development of V.K. Malmberg’s worldview is analyzed. These relationships determined his choice of profession as a historian of ancient art. His deep love for antiquity was cultivated by D.F. Belyaev, a classical philologist and prominent professor at Kazan University. It is revealed that the unrestricted access to Kazan University’s library collection of the latest literature on ancient art directed V.K. Malmberg’s line of reasoning. With a careful study of these materials came a good foundation for his subsequent research, which is proved by the recently published evidence from the epistolary collection of the Austrian National Library. It was at the Museum of Antiquities and Arts of Kazan University where he gained his first experience with teaching and working on museum collections. The hypothesis is put forward that V.K. Malmberg learned about A. Dürer’s works and style in Kazan because he explored the museum collection of Western European engravings available there. Future prospects for investigating the early stages of V.K. Malmberg’s professional endeavors are outlined.

Historians regard the twelfth century as the golden age of friendship. Nevertheless, the correct interpretation of this culture of friendship and its literary manifestations is under debate. Researchers into the amicitia debate increasingly rely on the “ network approach”, which is centered on the use of the language of friendship. In the present article, this quantitative approach is applied to a late twelfth-century collection of letters by a Benedictine monk, Guibert of Gembloux, and is complemented by a close reading of four case studies. Guibert’s correspondence attests to a spiritual interpretation of friendship that can function as an identifying discourse within a horizontal network among a monastic elite.

During his long scientific life, Darwin established contacts with correspondents around the world. In Portugal, to date, only knew the letters sent to the Azorean naturalist Arruda Furtado, but during the cataloging work in progress, of the documents of the former Geological Commissions, appeared two letters signed by the famous naturalist, likely to be addressed to Carlos Ribeiro, thanking him for sending publications. The fact that Darwin did not mention the works received, leaving just notice that the ones referred to the prehistoric remains and Tertiary formations in Portugal, leaves some doubt in their clear identification, thus allowing the possibility of admitting Ribeiro had present him with the question of the tertiary man, based on the discovery of eoliths’ in the Tagus Valley, in the early 1860s.

St. Petersburg branch of the Archive of the Russian Academy of Sciences stores a correspondence between a famous French writer André Gide and a renowned soviet Orientalist scholar, member of the USSR Academy of Sciences, Fyodor Rosenberg (1867–1934). Part of the correspondence is kept in the Parisian library Jacques Doucet. In 1921, the University of Lyon published the epistolary in French (in total 338 letters). The correspondence covers a long period from 1896 to the date of death of the Russian academic. This letters allow to contemplate the spiritual world of two outstanding cultural figures of the fin de siècle, as well as to see once again how the revolution in Russia influenced the mindset and the way of life of academic life. The fact that the epistolary lacks a number of letters is mainly explained by the 1917 Revolution. Only a short collection of letters dates back to the 1920s (when Rosenberg was a senior research curator at the Asiatic Museum, now the Institute of Oriental Manuscripts of the Russian Academy of Sciences), while the early 20th century is broadly represented in the correspondence. Social and political reality becomes more and more catastrophic as it invades that highly estheticized, sometimes explicitly Pre-Raphaelite-like universe into which Rosenberg, a refined expert in both Eastern and Western-European cultural traditions, would like to withdraw. “Beautiful Italy” occupies a significant place in the letters. Rosenberg’s deep emotions connected with his being a homosexual are also an important part of the epistolary. The edition is prepared by Nikol Dziub, professor at the University of Upper Alsace (UHA). The introductory note and an extensive pageby- page commentary provide a comprehensive view of the reality, cultural landmarks, and personalities that appear in the correspondence.

The research aims at examining the epistolary exchange between Latvian writers Rainis and Aspazija available in the Rainis un Aspazija (RunA) linked open data collection and dating back to the period Rainis was in Panevėžys Prison (1897); and at exploring the opportunities the collection offers in revealing links between objects, persons, events, and thus, at gaining a broader perspective on the historical context of the time. The collection, as a visual and content resource, thanks to the linked data environment created therein, reveals a wide range of cultural and historical material about both writers, and marks out the context of the time, the most important events, people, places, etc. The collection, with the help of linked data, publishes open, structured data regarding its objects, entities and respective links between the same. The article also analyses the issue of how important a role the interpretation of this type of structured data has in literary research and how it helps contemporary researchers in analysing a literary work or any literary research material (letters, working notes, documents, etc.).

By analyzing a collection of letters written to a young Tibetan Buddhist lama, I trace the contours of a humanizing project that grounds the youth within the lived experience of the human life course that his elder has traversed. I also analyze epistolography as a medium for humanistic formation within Tibetan Buddhist monastic education. This textual study, though rooted in the context of a single epistolary relationship in early modern Tibet, illuminates the search for human wisdom that is fundamental to Buddhist childhoods across historical and cultural contexts.

he study is devoted to the publication of Vyacheslav Ivanov’s Russian translation for Lithuanian folk songs, made for unpublished collection of Lithuanian literature (“Sbornik litovskoj literatury,” Petrograd, [1915–1917]; ed. by Iu. Baltrushaitis, M. Gorky). Around the same time, Baltrushaitis was the editor-compiler and translator of the collection of Lithuanian folklore at the publishing house of M. Sabashnikov. This project was also not implemented. Ivanov’s work on Lithuanian translations is chronologically close to his participation in other collections of national literatures. In an extensive introductory article, the author reconsctucts the history of the creation of translations from Lithuanian, using the correspondence of V. Ivanov, Y. Baltrushaitis, M. Sabashnikov. The research shows that Ivanov’s work on translations for the Lithuanian collection stretched from the beginning of 1916 to the summer months, when the poet’s family lived in a village near Sochi. The preamble also contains information about the first publication of an incomplete collection of these translations, made in 1973 by Yu. Tumyalis using unauthorized typescript from the Manuscript Department of the Institute of Lithuanian Literature and Folklore (Vilnius). In this publication, the texts of Ivanov’s translations are given by autographs from the Manuscript Department of the Institute of Russian Literature (Pushkinskiy Dom) of RAS and the Roman Archive of Vyach. Ivanov. The textual comments describe the currently available sources of Ivanov’s translations, such as correspondence of Iu. Baltrushaitis, epistolary materials of others, Ivanov’s preparatory materials, manuscripts, translations from the archival storages of St. Petersburg, Moscow, Rome, Vilnius.

The aim of the article is to define the information potential of the epistolary heritage of P. Kulish in the funds of V. I. Vernadsky National Library of Ukraine by analysing and establishing its documentary content, which makes it possible to reproduce retrospective information that complements and expands already known facts about the personality. Research methods. Along with general scientific methods of analysis and synthesis, the research uses historical, systematic, typological and aesthetic ones, as well as methods of archival and source scholar heuristics, source scholar criticism of sources, their textual analysis and information reconstruction. The scientific novelty of the study consists in highlighting the information resources representing the epistolary heritage of P. Kulish in V. I. Vernadsky National Library of Ukraine funds. The existing document multitude, primarily letters and telegrams, in the form of manuscripts and copies (in particular, typewritten articles by researchers of P. Kulish), which are of scientific interest for studying the writer’s life and creativity, is analyzed in detail. Main conclusions. In the funds of IR NBUV, there are about one thousand and a half letters of P. Kulish, which cover a long chronological range and present the names of many correspondents, both well-known and unknown, as well as letters without specifying the names of the addressees. The archive of P. Kulish is not consolidated in one fund, but scattered among different funds of the scientific institution: I, II, VII, X, 63, 95, 112, 131, 170, 172, 251, 315, 338 (the total number is 12 funds). Complex funds No. I “Literary materials”, No. III “Correspondence”, and fund No. X “Archives of the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences”, in which the artist’s epistolary documents predominate, deserve special attention. The document collection of P. Kulish, which is kept in No. 315, and is represented by the author’s epistolary block, is also noteworthy. Fund No. I presents about one thousand letters of P. Kulish, many of which do not contain information about the addressees (it is a damaged document or an unidentified addressee), which prevents the full reproduction of retrospective information, but still complements and expands already known facts. The epistles of P. Kulish to his addressees recorded information of a biographical nature, which is a valuable addition to his own prosopographical portrait. For the most part, the writer’s letters are characterised by informative content, as they are aimed to be read by a definite person. In addition, at that time, correspondence was one of the most important means of communication.

In 1614 Lope de Vega, recently ordained, published the Rimas sacras, a confessional canzoniere replete with allusions to his past promiscuity and recent religious conversion. I argue that Lope addressed his collection not only to a public of anonymous readers but also to a specific, private reader: his patron, the duke of Sessa. For the previous eight years, Lope had served as Sessa's erotic amanuensis, writing love letters and poems for the duke's various mistresses. I propose that the collection as a whole and several sonnets in particular constitute an implicit reproach to Sessa. Through his religious poetry, Lope sought to repudiate his degraded masculine identity as the duke's epistolary pimp (and reputed lover) and affirm his status as a priest who served a more exalted and loving patron. In the Rimas sacras, the discourses of clientage and Petrarchan love are imbricated in the dominant religious discourse, rendering it more available for contestatory practices than is often recognized.

This article explores the possibility of sentimentality in the Danish Enlightenment by investigating the Danish novels of the late eighteenth century. In Denmark, it was not until the 1780s that marriage, upbringing and relationships of love became the focus of the novel. By that time, the European current of sentimentalism had already turned to anti-sentimentalism. Therefore, the Danish novels never embraced the sentimental tendency, but instead discussed well-renowned sentimental novels in order to articulate a morality directed by reason. The article elucidates how Charlotta Dorothea Biehl’s collection Moralske fortællinger [Moral Tales] (1781-1782) and her epistolary novel Brevvexling imellem fortrolige Venner [Epistolary Correspondence between Intimate Friends] (1774), Knud Lyne Rahbek’s novels Hanna von Ostheim eller den kierlige Kone [Hanna von Ostheim and the loving wife] (1790) and Eulalia Meinau (1798, 1806) and Charlotte Baden’s Den fortsatte Grandison [The Continued Grandison ] (1782) discuss some of the most famous sentimental novels of the time: Wolfgang Goethe’s Die Leiden des jungen Werthers (1774), Martin Miller’s Siegwart, eine Klostergeschichte (1776), Rousseau’s Emile and Samuel Richardson’s The History of Sir Charles Grandison (1753). Biehl, Rahbek and Baden used the internationally famous novels as discussion partners, material for parody and as points for continuation, with the aim of warning against sentimentality and promoting a reading practice that facilitated reason and a virtuous living. Finally, the article suggests that the eighteenth century current of anti-sentimentalism in Denmark might have survived into the next century.

The present article explores the teaching dedicated to the different personal letter types presented in one of the first printed letter-writing manuals – “Slavenobolgarskiy Predruchniy Poslatelnik za Nastavlenia na Bolgarskite Yunoshi“ (1835) by Neophyte Bozveli and Emanuil Vaskidovich. The educational goals of the book transpire in the very essence of the idea that the epistolary theory should be implemented into clear examples. Therefore, types of letter patterns were provided not for mere reproducing but for interpretation and implication. And it is not a coincidence that by including the largest possible collection of examples of human relations – written and used as images of the various aspects of the human connections and interactions – Bozveli and Vaskidovich brought forward their practical epistolary lessons on writing good letters and maintaining a correspondence and etiquette. The themes of the personal letters and fictional stories chosen by the co-authors not only reveal the wide range of possible human relations inside immediate and friend circles but also extol social, civil, and moral virtues. The alluded ethical issues of love, respect, commitment, filial love, clear conscience, kindness, and sincerity, as well as the influence they have or aim to have both on the sender and the addressee, implicitly point out the principles of good behavior at home, at school, and on the street. They truly embody the enlightenment philosophy about the new ethics – moral education, the core value of which is to work for the benefit of society.

Relations in intellectual societies play an important role. The scientific, personal, and cultural connections had a special significance during the totalitarian era. Due to developed epistolary culture which was common among scientific environment, we now can reconstruct those connections using scientists’ letters. As an example of those scientific and personal connections the letters exchange between the member of the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences (UAS), fine arts expert and Head of the Ukrainian Archaeological Committee (UAC) Oleksa Petrovych Novytskyi and well-known archaeologist and museologist Serhiy Svyrydovych (Spyrydonovych) Hamchenko can be presented. The letters exchange between two scientists had not preserved completely. The fullest collection of letters is addressed to O. Novytskyi from S. Hamchenko are now stored in the archive of the academician in the Institute of Testaments of V. I. Vernadskyi National Library of Ukraine. Only several short letters from Maria Novytska (daughter of the academician) and notes of Oleksa Novytskyi are stored at S. Hamchenko’s collection in Scientific Archive of the Institute of Archeology of National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. Some letters (including drafts written by O. Novytskyi) illustrate cooperation of two scholars in UAC, archaeological excavations carried out by S. Hamchenko on DniproHES. Scientifically interesting are the S. Hamchenko’s letters written while he lived in Zhytomyr at the beginning of 1930th. They allow understanding archaeologist’s everyday life, relations in his family, scholar’s daily routine. A central topic of the correspondence between two scientists in 1931–1932 was financial issue: pension allowance, UAS funding, Serhiy Hamchenko’s medical treatment. From Serhiy Svyrydovych’s letters we can see how Oleksa Petrovych tried to help his colleague even though being in a hard financial and political situation himself. The long-lasting absence of income and inability to solve this problem influenced S. Hamchenko’s family. All this together with renouncement to pay a pension to a former monarch’s general caused scientist’s death from starvation in Zhytomyr on 06 of October 1932. Introduction. The article is a brief substantive analysis of the handwritten collection of works by Prince Semen Shakhovskoy. The collection consists of several dozen works of various genres, including historical, hymnographic, religious and philosophical, etc. The relevance of text analysis lies in obtaining a more complete understanding of the development of events of the period under study to which the manuscript belongs, including the Time of Troubles, through the restoration of biography and eyewitness testimony. Materials and methods. The main source of the work was a manuscript dating from 1652 from the collections of the Russian State Library, as well as its alleged copy (F. 173.1 No. 213 and No. 214). When writing the article, the following methods were used: the biographical method gave a clearer understanding of the life path and personality characteristics of Shakhovskoy; the paleographic method allowed to determine the distinctive features of the manuscript itself; the descriptive method allowed to reveal its content and classify the presented works. This classification is proposed for the first time. Results. The author managed to identify 5 types of texts in the collection: prayer, theological, hymnographic, historical and epistolary (epistles). An indication is also made of the preservation of authorship and the formation of a corpus of works for the memory of subsequent generations. This tradition, in many ways, was laid down by Maxim the Greek, references to whose works are in the Shakhovsky manuscript. Conclusion. Prince and voivode Shakhovskoy devoted his whole life to public service, but he gained the main fame thanks to the works that became historical and literary property. The collection under study does not contain all the works of Shakhovskoy known to researchers, but probably those that were of the greatest value to the author.

Abstract Zosimus’ Epistula 7 (JK 333 = J3 739, Quid de Proculi) to Patroclus, bishop of Arles, would suggest the normal operations of ecclesiastical judicial procedures: Proclus had been condemned, the validity of an earlier synodal decision had been overturned, and Patroclus’ own authority had been upheld. Appearances, however, can be deceiving. Other letters in Liber auctoritatem ecclesiae Arelatensis, particularly three written by Zosimus also in September 417, inform us about just how controversial were not only Patroclus’ claims to authority in southern Gaul but Zosimus’ support of Patroclus and his assertion that the Roman church had a role in arbitrating these claims. The evidence in the collection is of a dispute conducted with anything but diplomacy. This paper sets Quid de Proculi in its broader context to reveal how both Zosimus and the church of Arles tried, unwittingly or not, to promote a false memory about the church of Arles.

The author makes a historical reconstruction of the publishing work of Russian researchers based on historiographic sources. The article contains information about the first experience of publishing a letter from Grigory Potanin to Nikolai Naumov, which was found by the Tomsk local historian I.E. Lyasotsky in 1948. In the mid-1950s, the Leningrad researcher A.G. Grumm-Grzhimailo was working on it. He invited the Siberian researchers Ya.R. Kosheleva, N.N. Yanovsky and S.F. Koval. The work on collecting Potanin's letters, preserved in various museums and archives of the country, lasted more than 30 years. In 1977, the first part of the four-part edition of Potanin's letters was published in Irkutsk. It was made according to all the rules of archeography. The author of the article reports that in 1987 the publishing work resumed. Over the course of five years, five parts of letters by G.N. Potanin. The publication was prepared by the same researchers who worked on the release of the first part in 1977. The article notes the high level of archaeographic preparation of the publication. It includes 731 letters written by Potanin in 1859–1919. The text of all letters is given in compliance with modern spelling rules. All letters are supplemented with comments, they indicate the storage location of the original of each document, information about the people mentioned by Potanin is given, a name index is attached. In the appendix to the fifth part there is a bibliography of the works of G.N. Potanin, corrections of errors and typos made by the Tomsk researcher N.V. Serebrennikov. The article contains information about personal letters of G.N. Potanin in scientific collections and journals that were published in the 1980s–1990s in Tomsk and Barnaul. In addition, the scientists of the Scientific Library of Tomsk State University N.V. Vasenkin and G.I. Kolosov found a correspondence between Grigory Potanin and the Barnaul poetess Maria Vasilyeva. As a result, in 2004, the book was published with 184 letters from Potanin addressed to his future wife. This edition complements the epistolary heritage of G.N. Potanin. In the conclusion of this article, the author notes that unpublished letters of Potanin are kept in the collection of the TSU Scientific Library. The identification, archaeographic processing and publication of these letters help the research of the scientific heritage of G.N. Potanin.

Conventional approaches to literary genres conspicuously imply definition and classification. From the very beginning of our incursions into the literary world we learn to identify and differentiate a poem from a play, a short story from a novel. As readers we classify each written work into one of these neatly defined literary genres by following basic guidelines. Either we classify according to the structure of the work (stanza; stage direction/dialogue; narrative) or the length (short story; novelette; novel). What happens though when a reader encounters a work of considerable length made up of individual short pieces or vignettes that include rhythm and rhyme and is framed by an underlying, unifying story line linking the vignettes together? Is it a novel or a collection of short stories? Why does it sound and, at times, look like a poem? To further complicate classifications, what happens when a reader comes across an epistolary format with instructions on which letters to read first: letters made up of one-word lines, poetic stanzas, or italicized stream of consciousness; letters that narrate the history of two women's friendship? Is this a novel or a mere collection of letters?

In this article I use conceptual frames drawn from autobiography studies and feminist theory to examine the relationships between bodily experience and the social construction of sex, gender and class as they play themselves out in a selection of womens medical consultation letters written to the eminent Swiss physician, Samuel-Auguste Tissot, during the second half of the eighteenth century. My analysis of a selection of consultation letters - all of which are situated and read in the context of a rich archival collection of some 1,200 letters - considers the role that bodily experience plays in the construction of self and suggests that not only the experience, but also the textual articulation of the body, were imagined both through and against accepted understandings of sex, gender and class during this period.

The article presents epistolary sources in Persian from the Dagestan collection of firmans of Persian shahs in the name of the Kaitag utsmis. At the Institute of history, archaeology and Ethnography of DFRC RAS stored microfilms of these firmans received from the National library of France, where utsmic collection hit in the second half of the ХΙХ century. Copies of the firmans of Persian shahs in the name of Kaitag utsmis exist in the libraries of Georgia. They are published by the Georgian scientists with the typed texts and translation in Georgian and Russian languages. A comparative analysis of the documents revealed that the Georgian collection is fuller than the Paris collection, there are copies made by different katibs in the collections, and there are textual discrepancies and discrepancies in the Dating of firmans. We present in this article a facsimile of the firmans of Nadir Shah addressed to one of the most influential Dagestani rulers of the XVΙΙΙ century Kaitag utsmiy Ahmad-khan, and provide their contents with appropriate comments. Firmans have informative value, serve as a good source base for studying the complex, contradictory historical period, containing a lot of white spots in the history of the Nadir Shah wars in Dagestan. The documents have high scientific value and shed light on the policy of Nadir Shah in the territories under his control, on historical events related to the struggle of the Dagestani peoples for liberation from vassalage, and the policy of the Dagestani rulers. For several years, there was a struggle between the Dagestani highlanders and the Shah of Iran. The final victory over Nadir Shah was won only when the combined forces of the Avars, Kaitag people, akushins, kumukhs, Tabasarans, and all Dagestani peoples took part in the fight against the enemy in Andalal. Firmans convey the atmosphere of historical events, threats against recalcitrant mountaineers are heard more often, the tone of Nadir's letters, promising endless Shah's favors in exchange for submission, is replaced by a menacing, sometimes offensive one.

Based on unpublished archival materials and pieces from epistolary sources, the article restores a history of F.K. Sologub’s cooperation with a popular publishing enterprise at the beginning of the 20th century — Moscow Publishing House. The article analyses business relationships between Sologub and Moscow Publishing House staff members: G.G. Blumenberg, the owner and the editor of the literary digests “Zemlia” (20 books, issued by Moscow Publishing House from 1908 to 1917); D.M. Rebrik, Blumenberg trading house’s authorized representative; Bunin, the editor of the first three books of “Zemlia”; V.S. Klestov, the representative of Moscow Publishing House in St. Petersburg. The article follows the history of Sologub’s art works publications in the literary digest “Zemlia” (short stories “The Old House” and “The Beastly Life,” a novel “Smoke and Ashes”) as well as separate editions of some books (short story collections titled “Fierce Year” (1916) and “The Blind Butterfly” (1918), a collection of poems “Red Poppy” (1917)). Based on the reviews of literary critics, the article proves thematic dialogues between the texts by Sologub and other authors within the context of “Zemlia” almanacs. Information on censorship revisions and payment considerations (gradual reduction of fees) appears to be definitely interesting from the perspective of the history of literature.

Abstract The arrival of large numbers of Yemeni manuscripts in European libraries towards the end of the nineteenth century and in the early twentieth century was a sensation that was enthusiastically received by the scholarly world. One of the principal reasons for this enthusiastic reception was the upsurge of South Arabian studies in Europe since the first half of the nineteenth century, together with the hope that the new material would fill some of the gaps in the literary sources on the history and geography of southern Arabia, especially during the pre-Islamic period. The most significant such lacuna was the missing volumes 1 through 7 and 9 of al-Hamdānī’s Iklīl. The two most important collections of Yemeni manuscripts that arrived in Europe in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries had been gathered by Eduard Glaser and Giuseppe Caprotti, respectively, and their collections were sold to Berlin, London, and Vienna (Glaser) and to Munich, Milan, and the Vatican (Caprotti). The collections included some new material on South Arabian history (including volumes 1, 2, and 6 of the Iklīl), but they also opened up entirely new vistas and laid the foundation for the new discipline of Zaydi studies. Unlike South Arabian studies, the study of Zaydism had a slow start, with initially only a few scholars being interested in this entirely new field. Moreover, the scholarly exploration of the respective subcollections depended on the availability of catalogues. The early history of the Caprotti collection is intimately linked to Eugenio Griffini. Caprotti had dispatched nearly his entire manuscript collection of some 1,600 codices to Griffini, who kept it in his apartment in Milan until 1909, when the collection was donated to the Ambrosiana Library. Griffini was also the first and, for a long time, the only scholar to study the collection and prepare studies as well as catalogues of it. The process of his engagement with the material can be reconstructed on the basis of the Griffini archive, the whereabouts of which were for decades uncertain. This study outlines the discovery of the Griffini archive in the Biblioteca Comunale Centrale Palazzo Sormani in Milan and provides an initial overview of its contents, including Griffini’s epistolary exchanges with some ninety-nine correspondents, his descriptions of some of the Ethiopic manuscripts of the Ambrosiana, and, most importantly, his schedario, containing his extensive notes on all manuscripts of series A of the Caprotti collection. The large corpus of so far unexplored material promises to provide new insights into the network of Islamicists and Arabists at the turn of the twentieth century and the nascent phase of Zaydi studies in Europe.

The publication introduces into scientific circulation an unknown letter from Dmitry Filosofov to Tatyana Nikolaevna Gippius (1877–1957) from the Merezhkovskys collection in the Amherst Russian Center (Massachusetts, USA). The document refers to the period of the Merezhkovskys and Filosofov’s Paris emigration in 1906–1908, being a fragment of the extensive family correspondence of the period, in which Filosofov participated as a family member. The larger part of correspondence consists of the so-called “diaries” of T.N. Gippius (her almost daily letters-reports to Paris), in which a chronicle of the inner life of the Merezhkovskys’ neo-Christian commune is traced. Response letters have been lost, with a few exceptions. Filosofov’s letter to T. Gippius captures a remarkable fact of the epistolary dialogue and relations of correspondents, contains a real commentary on a number of plots of “diary” letters, and introduces new additional touches to the picture of the Merezhkovskys and Filosofov’s Parisian life in 1906–1908.

Abstract This review essay explores the profound scholarly significance of the publication of The Selected Letters of Willa Cather, a nearly 700-page collection scrupulously edited by Andrew Jewell and Janis Stout (Knopf, 2013). The volume contains 566 full-text transcriptions selected from the 3,000 Cather letters now known to exist and makes them accessible in print for the first time. Cather's will, executed in 1943, forbade not only publication of her letters but even direct quotation from them, so biographers and critics for decades engaged in a kind of shadowboxing as they sought to convey Cather's thoughts and feelings through the awkward constraint of paraphrase. Now that the testamentary restrictions have been lifted and this volume is available, scholars and fans can hear Cather's epistolary voice without traveling to archives. An extraordinary contribution to Cather studies, the Selected Letters offers much to anyone interested in twentieth-century American literature, women writers, or LGBT/queer studies.
