Briseño, J. Andrew. "Henderson Street Bazaar and Other Stories". Thesis, University of North Texas, 2010. https://digital.library.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metadc33222/.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
The preface, "Against Buses: Charles Baxter and the Contemporary Epiphany" deals with the epiphany as a potential ending to short stories. Baxter holds that epiphanies are trite and without purpose in today's fiction. I argue that Baxter's view, while not without merit, is limiting. Beginning with James Joyce and Katherine Anne Porter and moving to my own work, I discuss how some epiphanies, particularly false ones, can enhance rather than detract from excellent fiction. Five short stories make up the remainder of this thesis: "Dedication," "Taking it with You," "Transition to Flowers," "Profile in Courage," and "Henderson Street Bazaar."

Barreto, Michelle L. "Examining the Effects of Epiphanies on Possible Selves". FIU Digital Commons, 2009. http://digitalcommons.fiu.edu/etd/88.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
This study examined origins of possible selves and the role of Epiphanies. Specifically, of interest was whether there are demographic or self-regulatory differences in possible selves derived from different origins. The sample consisted of 411 participants, with age ranging from 17 – 95. The data was taken from two previous research studies on possible selves. The first research question examined the origins of possible selves. Results indicate that possible selves are derived from Epiphany experiences along with internal and external influences, such as another person, or a particular event. The second research question determined whether there were any demographic, ethnic, or cultural differences in the origins of possible selves. Results showed age, cohort, and socioeconomic status had effects. The final research question addressed whether there were differences in the domains of possible selves derived from various origins. Results indicated differences in domains however there were no clear patterns. The first hypothesis was that possible selves derived from an Epiphany would be considered more important than those derived from other origins. This hypothesis was not supported. The second hypothesis was that hoped-for possible selves were more likely to be derived from an Epiphany experience than feared selves. This hypothesis was supported. The second hypothesis also stated that possible selves derived from an Epiphany were more likely to be balanced than selves derived from other origins and this was supported for feared selves only. Finally, the third hypothesis stated that there would be self-regulatory differences between selves derived from Epiphanies compared to other origins but this was not supported. Taken together these findings show that the origins of possible selves are important and especially those derived from epiphany. The role of an Epiphany on the formation and implementation of possible selves paves the way for important prevention programs aimed at promoting healthy development and promoting an individual’s well being.

Eubanks, Karissa A. "Evangelicalism and epiphanies of grace in Flannery O'Connor's short fiction". Honors in the Major Thesis, University of Central Florida, 2011. http://digital.library.ucf.edu/cdm/ref/collection/ETH/id/378.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
The majority of critics interested in the religious elements of Flannery O'Connor's fiction argue that her texts illustrate her professed Catholic faith. For many of these scholars, the author's nonfiction figures predominately in their interpretations of her fiction. This thesis highlights the presence of Evangelical theology in O'Connor's short fiction by utilizing an approach that is underrepresented in scholarly examinations of her works: reading O'Connor's texts without considering the author's personal beliefs. Through this approach, the Evangelical dimensions of O'Connor's short stories become apparent. This thesis contends that each of the six short stories discussed exemplifies Evangelical theology as they emphasize the fallen nature of humanity, depict the action of grace as transformative, and suggest that willful cooperation is not necessary to salvation. By demonstrating that O'Connor's short fiction reproduces Evangelical theology, this thesis aims to provide scholars with a basis for reconsidering the relationship of her works to the literary tradition of the largely Protestant South.

Demenkoff, John Haynes. "Evolution and emergence of the masculinities| Epiphanies and epiphenomena of the male athlete and dancer". Thesis, Pacifica Graduate Institute, 2014. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=3626049.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):

To say that the masculinities are woven into the fabric of a pre-existing culture is not enough. One must go further and explore how culture itself is constituted by, or more precisely, constituted through the masculinities. As William Doty notes in his Myths of Masculinity (1993), culture not only produces but also is produced by stories. Ancient legends and sagas, like myths, are, to a large degree, perpetuated by the modern male dancer and athlete. However, as contemporary iterations of the masculinities, male athletes and dancers have evolved beyond the scope of myths and into new cultural forms. Their emergent story threads through this dissertation.

The masculinities represent a diverse array of possibilities and pluralities. What, then, holds them together as a coherent cultural force? This dissertation is, in large part, devoted to answering that question by way of a perspicuous inquiry conducted into a) the binarisms of gender, such as hetero-normativity and homophobia, b) the existential and archetypal nature of being, c) Cartesian mind-body dualities, and d) paradigms and practices of male athletes and dancers themselves.

In his The Structure of Scientific Revolutions (1962), Thomas Kuhn used "paradigm" to explain historical shifts in the practice of the hard sciences. Subsequently, Michel Foucault, in The Order of Things (1966), appropriated the word in a hermeneutical analysis of the human sciences. It is his unique exegesis of the history of knowledge that is used to track the historical arc of the masculinities.

This dissertation ultimately moves beyond the perspectives of Kuhn and Foucault to the work of feminist Judith Butler. In Bodies That Matter (1993), Butler maintains that one's gender is a cultural construct and that the process of gendering, though performative, is largely unconscious. If gender and sex are mere social constructs, where does that leave the nascent logos of an athlete or dancer's body? A counter-argument is made that in order to be coherent, the masculinities must possess, at minimum, a mindful body in addition to an embodied mind.

Keywords: Masculinities; Dancer; Athlete; Body; Discipline; Gender; Hero; Archetype; Dasein.

Beaven, Lindsey. "Epiphanies of soul| "When the bolts of the universe fly open." A depth psychological contemplation of wonder". Thesis, Pacifica Graduate Institute, 2014. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=3645455.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):

Over the centuries, the meaning of wonder has decayed substantially. An immense distance and complex history lie between Socrates' declaration that wisdom begins in wonder and the commercialism of today's Wonder Bread, Wonderbra and Wonderful World of Disney. Since few have considered wonder to be a psychologically significant experience, scholarship in this area has been negligible. Yet, amidst the travails of living, experiences of wonder can constitute transformational epiphanies and unlatch the flow of life through deepening subjectivity; magnifying perceptions; amplifying sensitivity to beauty; expanding horizons; recognizing the extraordinary in the ordinary; intuiting the sacred in the secular; and promoting possibility, delight, reverence, and gratefulness for the gift of life.

This dissertation contemplates the dimensions of the experience of wonder; wonder's connection to soul; and how we might attune to wonder. Since wonder is both the condition and the primary principle of the phenomenological reduction (van Manen, 1990, p. 185), several scholars concur that no adequate method exists for researching wonder, for it entails a recursive paradox of wondering about the wonderment of wonder, with wonder having the first and last word. Therefore, this work adopts a mixed method, combining depth psychological and phenomenological approaches with hermeneutically amplified heuristic inquiry. The researcher's experience of wonder provides the primary data, and multi-disciplinary texts serve to unfold this data.

The findings identify wonder's key themes, characteristics, valences, and nuances, and ways to attune and attend to wonder's presence, both inside and outside the consulting room. Ultimately, the study personifies wonder as a feminine voice of soul, and advocates her inclusion in depth psychotherapy as integral to its honoring of tending the soul, the etymological root of psychotherapy itself. Wonder reveals herself as an ineffable encounter with existence and the world, an epiphany of embodied, archetypal resonance between the individual's soul and the soul of the world, when "the universe shivers in the depths of the human" (Swimme, 1985, p. 32). This study, embracing knowledge as beginning and ending in wonder, grants her the final word.

Key words: Wonder, soul, resonance, epiphany, ineffability, attunement, attentiveness, unknowing, aesthesis, intuition.

Abstract (sommario):
In this exploration, I examine how autoethnographers create connections and community through the metaphor of the undead in their various forms. Autoethnography allows us to write and speak about our anxieties, our impolite private issues, and what frightens us at home and at work, including aging, guilt, mortality, shame, and lost love. Through autoethnography, we connect the seen and the invisible, the known and the unknown, the understood and the unexplained, mystery and science. It provides us the opportunity to reenchant the world. Most importantly, autoethnographic writing provides us the opportunity to recognize that our fears are not ours alone but are a basis upon which we can all connect.

Hallén, Rizzo Pamela. "The Sacred and Sacrifice within an Economy of Wasteful Expenditure in Thomas Pynchon's V". Thesis, Stockholms universitet, Engelska institutionen, 2009. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:su:diva-32207.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Thomas Pynchon’s V. is often criticized for its preoccupation with meaninglessness and the  inability to make sense of ‘who’ or ‘what’ V. is about. The failure to make sense of V. is thematized within the novel particularly during the sacred moments or epiphanies which critics describe as ‘bizarre’, ‘disturbing’ or ‘unsettling’. These sacred moments raise issues that cannot be answered by traditional tools. Yet, critics and readers have responded to the novel with readings that reinscribe conventional modes of making sense and show a resistance to the inadequacy of traditional tools. This dissertation examines how Pynchon undermines modernist notions of the sacred moment as “moments of vision” which yield a higher knowledge or revelation. I argue that the sacred moments in V. allude to George Bataille’s notion of waste within a restricted and general economy. The violence of the sacred moments in V. are examined in relation to waste, sacrifice, the erotic, the inanimate, sovereignty and laughter. I conclude that rather than bringing about death, entropy and apocalyptic endings, the epiphanies’ violence and wasteful expenditure reveal the power structures at work in the literary use of the sacred. Paradoxically, the necessary existence of wasteful expenditure increases sense-making and offers the critic/reader the possibility of confronting waste, “the accursed share”.

Guillot, Matthieu. "Epiphanie de l'imperceptible". Paris 8, 1997. http://www.theses.fr/1997PA081256.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Among the many modes of musical expression that the xxth century offers, there is one dimension that is particularly fascinating to listen to but whose approach is anything but easy. We mean a range of sounds that tend to be scarcely audible and are buried in the deep bosom of the perception field. But the word scarcely brings a nuance that heralds and amplifies the presence of the sensitive world within which another world, hitherto unheard -of and unexplored seems to quiver to life. Thanks to the former, there emerges a world so intently tenuous that the listener's subjectivity, as if mesmerized, pervades the space left vacant by the fading sound. Thus, this troubling poetics of subdued sounds seems to form a very specific, aesthetic and musical category, typical of a true philosophy of music seen as the philosophy of sound which reintroduces the fundamental importance of listening when one concentrates on sound as a phenomenon and on its repercussions on the personal experience of the listener. Here is a baffling challenge to the overstrained ear but also to the listener's receptive skills and aesthetics awareness as well. For the three are simultaneously, patiently and relentlesly in quest of the musics of the imperceptible which demand of the listener "to go through the looking glass" to discover the world that dwells in their ethereal vibrations, a universe which they reveal unto him after long-suffering explorations which take him on the fringe of the "after sound". The presens thesis - it is hoped - may help to lift a corner of the veil behind which is lurking the frail whisper of this peculiar musical property. For, like all veils, it is obviously an enigma for the researcher and it stirs his desire to understand what it is that - behind the dropped curtain - plays tricks upon him

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
This thesis is concerned with the conception that epiphanius, bishop of salamis in cyprus and a father of the church in the 4 th century had of heresiology, a literary genre which had appeared two centuries earlier, and with the methods that he used. The author and his catalogue of heresies are first of all placed in their historical and heresiological contexts and then the study itself is carried out through a detailed analysis of ten characteristic notices taken from his main work, the panarion, in such a way as to reveal his sources, analyse his way of exploiting them and elucidate his thought and composition processes. The notices chosen for this study are the notice against noetus, the gnostic heresies of menander, satornilus, basilides, carpocrates and nicolas, the notice against tatian, the heresy of the quartodecimans, that of the cathari and lastly the judeo-christian heresy of the nasoreans. The conclusions make it possible to identify or confirm the primary as well as the extremely varied secondary sources of epiphanius, to see how he composes his notices, to reconstitute the corresponding notices in hippolytus' lost syntagma and to become familiar with the traditional techniques of heresiology and the way epiphanius adapts them for his own use. Despite the difficulties of his style and his rather disconcerting language, epiphanius remains a mine of information about the 4 th century church and heresies thanks to his concern with detail, the abundance of his sources and the sufficiently faithful use he makes of them, provided that one does not stop at a simple reading of his writings but takes into account his sources and heresiological methods he employs. The greek text, with improvements on that of corpus of berlin, and my translation of the notices are added to the work

Garrote, Rubén. "Abortion and consumption : toward a political reading of Epiphanius of Salamis' "Gnostics"". FIU Digital Commons, 2005. http://digitalcommons.fiu.edu/etd/3591.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Using Pierre Bourdieu’s social theory I examined fourth-century, state-sponsored orthodoxy and gnostic heterodoxy as agents in the religious field engaged in competition over the production and administration of religious capital. This established, I employed Maurice Bloch’s schema of “rebounding violence” to address both orthodox and heterodox understandings of the Christian myth. The analysis revealed how the myth was utilized by both groups: The orthodoxy, in its literal understanding of the myth, employed the idiom of rebounding violence, thus legitimating not only its place in the social order but also its political and ideological expansionism. The heterodox response to this was the abortion of the second phase of rebounding violence, outward consumption. I took as a case study the eucharistic rituals of the Egyptian Gnostics described by Epiphanius of Salamis. The examination yielded a new understanding of this type of gnosis in terms of reproductive denial as the ultimate act of political protest, a revolt against all the powers of the world, earthly and celestial.

Abstract (sommario):
The starting premise of this dissertation is that the formal techniques of comedy make the comic novel a distinct form within the category of the novel, not just in terms of content, the way one novelistic genre is distinct from another, but also in terms of form, similar to the way poetry is distinct from prose. The argument is that the formal structures of comedy, such as set-ups, punchlines, and comic rhythm, combine to constitute a formally rigorous, almost rule-bound art form. These techniques are explored through close readings of various 20th century comic novels, in particular Voyage au bout de la nuit by Louis-Ferdinand Céline, Le Sabotage amoureux by Amélie Nothomb, Moskva-Pethushki by Venedikt Erofeev and Catch-22 Joseph Heller. The further extension of this argument is that these formal structures create certain fundamental characteristics the comic novel, which in turn instantiate spiritual and emotional functions of the comedy on a structural level. The most important of these functions are that comedy serves creates a sudden, epiphanic awareness of reality, a sense of self-transcendence, and an instant bond between people. Finally, the dissertation considers the limitations of these functions. For example, comedy creates awareness of that which was previously latently grasped, but rarely substantively new knowledge. The sense of self-transcendence it is real but momentary, fleeting. And the connection it fosters between people is instant but limited by its own basic impersonality.

This study concerns the problem of the icon and iconicity in the contemporary world, using the withdrawal of the icon from its iconographical code as the point of departure. From there, new solutions come into play in order to redefine the icon, as well as the concept of visual economy vis-a-vis the work. The dialectical relationship between void and fullness, iconicity and representation, unformed matter and fallen matter, the concept of "acheiropoises", and the relationship of the icon to its prototype are developed and then illustrated by the author's plastic iconography

Manor, Timothy Scott Calhoun. "Epiphanius' Alogi and the question of early ecclesiastical opposition to the Johannine Corpus". Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/6426.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
The Johannine literature has been a cornerstone of Christian theology throughout the history of the church. However it is often argued that the church in the late second century and early third century was actually opposed to these writings because of questions concerning their authorship and role within “heterodox” theologies. Despite the axiomatic status that this so-called “Johannine Controversy” has achieved, there is surprisingly little evidence to suggest that the early church actively opposed the Johannine corpus. This thesis is a detailed study of the primary evidence recorded by the fourthcentury Church Father, Epiphanius of Salamis, which is the earliest record to explicitly note ecclesiastical opposition towards the Gospel and Apocalypse of John, taken together. In his Panarion, Epiphanius states that a group called the “Alogi” rejected the Gospel and Apocalypse of John, and attributed both to the heretic Cerinthus. He does not record any identifying features of this group’s provenance, theology or constituency; rather he only notes two objections that these Alogi had against the Gospel of John, and three against the Apocalypse. The identity of this group remained a mystery for centuries until consideration was given to the testimonies of two later Syrian writers who indicate that a certain “Gaius” made similar criticisms against the Gospel and Apocalypse of John in a debate with Hippolytus of Rome. As a result, the consensus view throughout modern scholarship is that an early churchman, Gaius of Rome, was the leader of this group that sought to eradicate the Johannine corpus from the church, and that Epiphanius as well as the later Syrian writers used a work of Hippolytus, now lost, as the primary source of their information. This thesis is a careful examination of the evidence that supports the theory that the early church actively opposed the Johannine literature. Thus, particular attention is given to the testimony of Epiphanius concerning the Alogi. It is demonstrated here that when priority is given to the early evidence, the Alogi is a fictional heretical sect, created by Epiphanius from various testimonies to account for what he believed to be antagonism primarily against the Gospel of John, and secondarily the Apocalypse. The later Syrian evidence is also examined in light of the early evidence, not the other way around, as is often the case. As a result, these sources are shown to be less reliable in their portrayal of the early reception of the Johannine literature than has previously been recognized. The first section of this thesis engages the question regarding the likelihood that Epiphanius derived his knowledge of this group from an earlier work of Hippolytus. The internal and external evidence about this group suggest that it is Epiphanius’ own creation. The second section explores the testimonies of earlier writers, namely Papias, Irenaeus, Origen, Eusebius and Dionysius of Alexandria, and the way in which Epiphanius used these sources in the construction of this heresy. The third and final section critically examines the reliability of the later Syrian evidence concerning Gaius and his supposed ties to the Alogi. I argue that these later sources are not as reliable as many scholars maintain, and that Gaius of Rome was not associated with the Alogi, nor was he a heretic.

Abstract (sommario):

Geographic Intersection: Urban Landscapes, the Natural World, and the Epiphanic Moment is a collection of poetry spanning my undergraduate and graduate career at California State University, Long Beach. The three-part structure of this work largely encapsulates the esthetic concerns and subject matter of my poetry. I investigate the way space is socially, culturally, and geopolitically rendered in an attempt to illuminate the (in)visible substructures and wilderness of urban environments. The natural world is also important to my work, functioning as a catalyst for the revelation and epiphany of existential and biological unity. The appendices are arranged so they seamlessly fluctuate between natural and urban environments, with attention paid to socioeconomic and cultural nuance throughout.

"Epiphanies: An Existential Philosophical and Psychological Enquiry". University of Technology, Sydney. Faculty of Science, 2005. http://hdl.handle.net/2100/264.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
The purpose of this inquiry is to investigate the relatively under-researched and under- developed nature of positive change and transformation that is sudden and abrupt, as defined by the term epiphany. A review of the literature across the disciplines of sociology, literary studies, education and psychology pertaining to epiphanies revealed a modest and disparate body of knowledge. As yet only two studies to date have developed and tested a conceptual framework describing and explaining epiphanies, both situated in the theoretical perspectives of developmental, clinical, cognitive and behavioural psychology. Due to the sparseness of the epiphanic literature, a thorough review was undertaken, producing a set of six core characteristics, which were tested and interpreted from a self-identity existential perspective. Existential philosophy and psychology provide an understanding of human experiences based on personal meaning and the essential realities of the human condition. In order to encapsulate an existential theory of knowledge, a narrative approach to methodology was employed to collect, analyse and interpret participants' epiphanies, from which three main conclusions were drawn. Firstly, an epiphany is a profound illumination of the inauthentic and authentic modes of self-identity, which provide the impetus for a more honest and courageous encounter with the conditions of existence. Secondly, the participants' life-stories illustrate that an epiphany is a valid experience as indicated by support for the set of six core characteristics developed from the literature. Lastly, an epiphany is an intentional experience made significant and enduring by the ascription of personal meaning.

OLVET, THOMAS. "Developmental Metamorphoses: An Investigation into the Phenomenon of Epiphany". Thesis, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/1974/5157.

Abstract (sommario):
ABSTRACT Learning through epiphanies, especially those not born out of dire crises, can be exciting, hugely satisfying, and life-validating ways to augment the significance of a lesson. In a moment of clarity, they have the ability to transform knowledge into wisdom, to provide a sense of interconnectedness within the grander scheme, and to contribute instant resolutions to persistent dilemmas seemingly irresolvable by less extraordinary means. This study involves a hermeneutic phenomenological investigation of epiphanies as they occur in lived experience. Its primary goal was to address the question, “What does it mean to have an epiphany?” Using data collected from 16 first-person, retroactive accounts of the experience, an analysis strategy using six spectra of contrasting dimensions was used to highlight the importance of the interplay between various characteristics of epiphanies. A significant finding of the study is that there is no such thing as an archetypical epiphany. Nevertheless, we can still recognize the phenomenon as a coherent entity mainly because there is agreement about many of its characteristics in the moment that it happens. Having an epiphany involves inductively rearranging patterns of deductively organized information with personally, and sometimes universally significant results. These may include dramatic shifts of perspectives, impulses that lead us to action on important matters, and occasionally whole-scale transformations of identity. Enhancing formal education settings to facilitate the experience can renew one’s passion for learning by making lessons more personally meaningful. In order to reap the benefits of the experience, we must hold space for the creative and introspective pursuits that allow them to happen. However, a challenge for facilitators of epiphanies involves learning how to direct the result of an epiphany to an intended outcome, such as a curricular goal.

Sopcak, Paul. "Epiphanies of finitude: a phenomenological study of existential reading". Phd thesis, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/10048/1796.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
A prominent hypothesis in literary studies is that readers, especially those that are fully immersed, engage empathically with fictional characters. This dissertation provides a critique of the Cartesian assumptions embedded in contemporary (cognitive scientific) models of empathy and then goes on to provide an alternative account of empathy based on especially Husserl’s and Heidegger’s phenomenology. According to this alternative, empathy does not establish but rather discloses in reflection an already present intersubjectivity from which it is derivative. It is also held that readers who are fully empathically engaged in a literary text lose self-awareness. I provide a critique of this view and present a Husserlian model according to which full engagement with the other and continuation of a certain kind of self-awareness occur simultaneously. This phenomenological alternative is based on the notion that an experiential self-givenness or “mineness” accompanies all my experiences and is prior to any objectifying forms of self-awareness. I then critique Cartesian models of (self-)reflection and self-modification in literary reading and with the help of Heidegger suggest a phenomenological model within which the distinction between modification of beliefs and the modification that is inherent in experiencing becomes understandable as contingent on the form of ontological interrogation that Merleau-Ponty terms “radical reflection”. Finally, I present a series of empirical studies investigating whether the preceding theoretical distinctions are borne out in the experiences of actual readers of literary texts concerned with human finitude. Phenomenological methods, (Kuiken, Schopflocher, and Wild; Kuiken and Miall, “Numerically Aided Phenomenology”) were employed to 1) identify several distinct types of reading experience, 2) spell out how one of those types instantiates ‘existential reading’ as conceived here, and 3) provide convergent and discriminant validation of this type of reading experience. Of particular interest was whether a form of existential reading can be understood as an event during which readers engage the text through a form of empathic engagement that is grounded in an a priori intersubjectivity, that retains an experiential self-awareness or “mineness” simultaneously with empathic engagement, and that supports a non-Cartesian form of “radical reflection” that opens onto an ontological consideration of finitude.

Title of Thesis: Sensual Epiphanies: A Study of Aesthetics of James Joyce’s Writing Name of Institute: Department of Foreign Languages and Literature, College of Humanities, Chi Nan University Page: 83 Graduation Time: October, 2010 Degree Conferred: Master Student Name: Shou-Tao Chao Advisor Name: Prof. Hsiao-Ching Chow Abstract The major argument to the M. A. thesis is to redefine the process of achieving epiphany in James Joyce’s work A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man and Ulysses, and it may be divided into three chapters. In the first chapter, it aims to discuss about the three characters’ sexual awakening, the process of fulfilling their sexual desires, and how it leads to the moments of epiphanies. The second chapter talks about Thomas Aquinas’s idea of God, beauty ,and human intellect. The third chapter aims to argue about James Joyce’s epiphany and how the three characters’ moments of epiphanies may be achieved. By the three chapters, it is obvious to know the process of achieving sensual epiphany is like Joyce’s process of seeking for beauty of art. By the process, he may become more mature and may achieve the sublime of art and senses. Key words: James Joyce; Epiphany; Sexual Desire; Thomas Aquinas; Mutual Revelation

Hancock, Frank Charles III. "Secret epiphanies: The hermeneutics of revealing and concealing in the Fourth Gospel". Thesis, 1994. http://hdl.handle.net/1911/16730.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
In this thesis I attempt to demonstrate that the so-called "Johannine problem" is deeply involved in the hermeneutical issues of concealing and revealing, secrecy and mystery. Thus, the "Johannine problem" is re-constituted in a narrative that deconstructs unity and coherence through a dynamic process of concealing and disclosure, disclosure and concealing. With that as the operating thesis, it follows that the goal of this project is to demonstrate that the Gospel of John resists interpretation and understanding when read on its own terms. In Chapter 1 Johannine secrecy is placed in the context of the work of William Wrede who first introduced the notion of secrecy into gospel studies, and in doing so, raised the issue of understanding in biblical hermeneutics. When Wrede applied the secrecy motif to the Fourth Gospel, he concluded that the notion of Jesus as a bringer of truth and light is not fully sustained in the narrative of John's Gospel as an unbroken whole, or as a closely conceived idea. In Chapter 2 Rudolf Bultmann's hermeneutic and exposition of the Fourth Gospel is presented as an example of one who has astutely perceived the central issues with which a specifically modern program for biblical interpretation must wrestle; that is, the alien character of the world views represented in biblical texts. Bultmann observed how the tension between concealing and revealing is implicated in the mythological language used by the Fourth Evangelist. Bultmann, however, was preoccupied with the existential categories of Martin Heidegger and thus missed the turn when Heidegger moved toward a hermeneutic of language. It is only when language is thought of as the disclosure of being that religious texts can be thought of as "vehicles of revelation." In Chapter 3 Martin Heidegger's hermeneutic of concealing and revealing is introduced through his concept of aletheia, or truth as the interplay between concealing and revealing. It is this concept which provides the cornerstone of this thesis. In Heidegger's terms, secrecy is the ground of revelation. Heidegger's philosophical categories open new possibilities for reading gospel narratives because the tension between concealing and revealing is now considered as a hermeneutical obstacle to full disclosure and understanding. Thus, what gospel narratives reveal is also withdrawn again into concealment, thus making the valid interpretation sought by traditional critics extremely difficult to achieve. In the final two chapters of this thesis the Prologue of the Fourth Gospel (John 1:1-18) and the story of the trial of Jesus before Pilate (John 18:28-19:16a) are examined as test cases for the hermeneutic developed by Heidegger. Using Heidegger's hermeneutical categories I show that the Gospel of John is as much a story about concealing as it is about revelation. The narrative pushes toward the full disclosure of Jesus as the truth and the light, but this revelation takes place in concealing. Revelation is promised, but the promise is left unfulfilled. Truth is disclosed in the person of Jesus, and then qualified in ways that leave the reader in doubt about the nature of truth. In the final analysis, this thesis argues that the Gospel of John victimizes the reader by undermining meaning, concealing revelation, and preventing disclosure in ways unforeseen by either traditional historical criticism or the newer literary criticism.

Jarvis, Arianna Nicole. "Taking a break: Preliminary investigations into the psychology of epiphanies as discontinuous change experiences". 1996. https://scholarworks.umass.edu/dissertations/AAI9709611.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
This dissertation constitutes an initial inquiry into the experience of psychological epiphany. In this investigation, the epiphanic experience is conceptualized as one of sudden, discontinuous change, leading to profound, positive, and enduring transformation through the reconfiguration of an individual's most deeply held beliefs about self and world. To explore the nature of the epiphanic experience, a qualitative, empirical inquiry was undertaken to determine its fundamental features. Though the generalizability of the findings is limited by the small sample size (five individuals were interviewed indepth), the study revealed a number of characteristic features. The experience was found to be affectively intense, egosyntonic, and profoundly liberating. The experience of epiphany among the participants studied occurred primarily during adolescence or early adulthood, was preceded by a period of internal conflict during which feelings of alienation, anxiety and depression were common, and followed by a period of productive activity and heightened energy. Given the lack of a theoretical framework within which such experiences of discontinuous psychological change could be investigated, two theoretical perspectives originating outside psychology were explored for their applicability. The first, general systems theory, provided a distinction between changes that occur within a system, versus changes to the system as a whole. Systems theory was therefore found to be useful in addressing the impact of epiphanic experiences as experiences which seem to effect changes to an individual's system of world assumptions. However chaos theory, because it offers a way of distinguishing between different kinds of discontinuous change, was found to provide an even more comprehensive metatheoretical framework within which epiphanies could be conceptualized. Chaos theory holds that significant structural changes to a system which are highly adaptive, often follow from periods of turbulence and seemingly random behavior. Though clinical psychology generally encourages the view that chaos is negative, the findings of the present study suggest that a period of seeming psychological chaos must be carefully evaluated by the clinician as it may be a prelude to important and enduring positive change in an individual's most basic world assumptions.

Arnold, Julie. "Tracing the mindshift in preservice teachers: learning landscapes". Thesis, 2015. https://vuir.vu.edu.au/29794/.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
The search for quality and relevance in higher education curriculum drives educational reform. In 2004, research supporting an ‘Inquiry into the suitability of current preservice teacher education courses’ was presented to the Parliamentary Committee on Education and Training in Victoria (Victorian Parliament, Education and Training Committee 2005) and another in 2009 titled, ‘Inquiry into effective strategies for teacher professional learning’ Final report (Victorian Parliament, Education and Training Committee 2009). In response to this reconceptualisation of teacher education for the 21st century, questions have been raised by academics; and in this new context, debate and research are focussing on the hegemony of preservice teacher education (Shulman 1987; Cochran-Smith 2001; Loughran 2006). Reform of teacher education has been a focus of historical and contemporary community debate. The development of educational programs for teachers implies the generation of higher levels of thinking, metacognition and learning to enable preservice teachers to think about their own thinking (Pohl 2000). The aim of this research is to describe the layers of learning experiences and development involved in preservice teacher education and, in particular, to articulate a reflective pedagogical paradigm that is inherent in the process of becoming a reflective practitioner. Research into higher education plays a meaningful role by informing contemporary public debate and assisting in directing policy-makers in the development and optimisation of higher education.
