La transition écologique investit le champ de la communication environnementale en mobilisant deux phénomènes communicationnels distincts, le film documentaire et des initiatives citoyennes de transition révélant certaines attitudes, renouvelant une interconnexion de notre tradition avec le vivant. En ouvrant à un élargissement de la compréhension du fonctionnement des espèces, la transition écologique inspirée de la permaculture permettrait un autre rapport à l’autre. En communication, les acteurs du mouvement de la transition se focaliseraient sur le présent dans de nombreux pays, favorisant la créativité des acteurs et assurant que les actions quotidiennes fabriqueraient le monde de demain. Développé par des individus montés en capacité sur les questions environnementales, inclusif, ce mouvement culturel s’appuierait sur différents formats de « récits », composant une communication emprunte de factuel et d’expériences sensibles. A partir d’une étude de films qui ont marqué un tournant dans le champ du documentaire écologique et de l’observation de la création d’un projet de transition sous l’approche de la permaculture, la recherche conduite en SIC selon une méthode inductive priorise l’étude des procédés mis en place par les acteurs ainsi que les processus discursifs narratifs engagés permettant l’étude des échanges intergroupes où les notions de culture, de performativité et d’acculturation sont mobilisées par les acteurs dans leur quotidien. Dans un contexte où les thématiques de la peur, de la catastrophe sont présentes autour de la communication environnementale, du mouvement de la transition écologique traduirait-elle un changement d’heuristique ?
The ecological transition is investing the field of environmental communication by mobilising two distinct communicational phenomena, documentary film and transitional civic initiatives revealing attitudes that renew the interconnection between our tradition and the living world. By letting our comprehension of the way species function broaden, the permaculture-inspired ecological transition would allow for another relation to others. In communication sciences, players of the transition movement would be focusing on the present in numerous countries, thus encouraging the creativity of its protagonists based on their abilities and ensuring that daily actions would build the world of tomorrow. Developed by individuals with increased capabilities on environmental issues, inclusive, this cultural movement would rely on different narrative structures composing a communication gathering facts and sensitive experiences. From a corpus of movies that marked a turning point in the field of ecological documentary films, and the observation of a new permaculture-based transition project, the research conducted in information and communication sciences using an inductive and anthropological method prioritises the study of processes set up by the protagonists as well as the narrative processes employed, allowing to access interpersonal and inter-groups communications showing how people integrate notions of culture, performativity and acculturation in their daily lives. In a context where environmental communication calls up notions of fear, catastrophe and anxiety is the communication around the transition movement showing a change in heuristics?

Abstract (sommario):
This dissertation uses a case study of the recently proposed dam on the Mary River at Traveston Crossing in South-East Queensland to consider how individuals can become empowered to effect change in the environmental decision-making processes of the state through citizen action in the public sphere. The theoretical framework chosen to guide the analysis is an adaptation of Judith Butler’s theory of performativity (1997) that I refer to as political performativity. I also draw on social movement theory and media theory to examine how the processes of performativity help explain the practices involved in the public sphere actions taken to stop the Queensland Government’s proposed dam. The case study demonstrates that the initial speech acts of the state government’s announcement, and the way in which these were carried out, impacted on the life worlds of people involved. The protesters’ actions were not only symbolic of their struggle but also part of the creation of an alternative life world vastly different to that imposed upon them through the various speech acts of the Queensland Government. Lessons for the future include the development of more conscious strategies for activists in public sphere actions. Potential research resulting from this study includes a closer examination of the relationship between speech acts, emotions and public sphere action. The usefulness of political performativity in understanding emotions, public sphere action and power may better be served through participatory research methodologies. Further research directions are outlined.

The study explores a set of genre-hybrid reviews, 1999-2001, characterised by a standpoint of ecological rationality, and produced by a professional writer for a professional environmental management organisation. The interaction between such managers has not been studied before in terms of professional communication and was delineated as a new field of enquiry. The issues of tact and Face were important for this organisational community, which shared characteristics of contact communities and Communities of Practice. Methods used derive from studies of text in context, and organisational communication. The assembly of theoretical material is one outcome of the study, which tackled three questions: 1 To assess in what way the reviews made a contribution to the organisation, Weick's equivoque and the notion of the Fractal were combined to explain the text as an active organ for collaborative organisational learning and knowledge management. Thereby the texts are presumed to have contributed to the organisation's goal to enhance knowledge and practice in environmental management among managers drawn from diverse intellectual backgrounds. 2 To address the question of the technical characteristics of the reviews, narrative polyphony concepts provided suspension dialogia, which complemented the notion of translation suspension. 3 To address how the reviewer had managed to reproduce organisational patterns despite his inconsistent moral standpoint, the search for a theoretical position travelled through code-switching, pragmatics and translation, emerging with a concept similar to intersemiosis, labelled 'codehandling'. The combination of questions produced complex answers. Translation constructs, such as dynamic equivalence, increasingly emerged as productive and suitable to complement emerging endogenous approaches in environmental management literature. The genre-hybrid is argued to have altered the social function of the review. In prioritising interaction, it put at risk the organisation's strategic tact 10 structure. Nevertheless, the reviewer managed the risk within acceptable limits and produced popular and successful reviews.

Abstract (sommario):

Climate change is a hot topic today. It is important for companies to take

responsibility for the environment. For companies it is also important to

communicate their environmental efforts to its customers.

The aim of this study is to analyze how transportation companies communicate their

environmental efforts on the web. Europe’s largest transportation companies as well

as Asian and North American airlines are studied. Companies’ websites were

examined and evaluated on several criteria.

The study surprisingly showed that a lot of companies did not have any external

communication due to unavailable websites. There are significant geographical

differences in how companies communicate green.

Many transportation companies provide environmental information on their websites

however they need to be more convincing in doing so.

Abstract (sommario):
As one of the earliest attempts to apply immersive technology in environmental communication, this design research project tries to answer the following research question: how do we communicate the connections between food-related behaviors and environmental impacts through immersive storytelling? During the project, an immersive story called "Trik’s' Party" for dome shows and a journey map of an immersive visitor experience are created. These design outcomes and this paper are built on the knowledge of scientific findings, communication methods, content creations, and service design. To support the creation process, new sketching, storyboarding and prototyping methods were developed for dome content creations. The core message of this paper is that effective environmental communication is not just about informing the public about facts and data from scientific studies. It is also about giving individuals and communities the knowledge, tools and spaces to develop a vision of their own future. Immersive storytelling is one of the methods for creating these spaces. It has a large potential to raise public empathy with other people and their future-self when the long-term and abstract impacts of the environmental problems become more visible and comprehensible in an imaginary space.

This project explores how musical improvisational processes come into being through interacting discursive power relationships that are embodied and enacted through performance. By utilizing the concepts of framing and performativity I am able to show how discursive power constitutes the performance of improvisational music. To exemplify this theory, the project presents a case study examining a Grateful Dead cover band named Uncle John's Band that performs at Skipper's Smokehouse in Tampa, FL. Using an ethnographic methodology, the project articulates the dominant discursive power relationships that constitute Uncle John's Band's improvisational performances. The dominant discursive power relationships revolve around the lived philosophies and performance style of the Grateful Dead as embodied and communicated through performance by the members of Uncle John's Band. Dominant discursive power relationships also form among audience members as well as the staff at Skipper's Smokehouse. All of these power relationships constitute the performance of improvisational music. In a reflexive turn, the project also offers a re-articulation of ethnography through the tenets of improvisation. Finally, the project presents conclusions concerning the nature of researching improvisational music performance and some future directions for this study.

In 2006 an international standard, ISO 14025, was published on the principles and procedures of environmental product declarations (EPD). The standard gives requirements to the development of EPDs and PCRs and is used as a basis of EPD development within many EPD programmes globally. Despite an international standard, published EPDs today have different contents and format depending on who published the EPD. The main goal of EPDs is to provide objective, comparable and credible information about the environmental impacts of a product throughout its life cycle. These objectives can be diminished by the variations seen in EPDs and PCRs today. Through the mapping of six different international EPD programmes and the analysis of published PCRs and EPDs, this thesis shows that there is a need for communication between and harmonisation of EPD programmes at a global level. The main objective of this thesis is to contribute in the harmonisation of standards and guidelines for communication of environmental performance products and services in Norway. The thesis results in a recommendation to the Norwegian EPD Foundation within five areas; o format and layout of EPD o front page of EPD o environmental impact categories o user guide o online database

I began this thesis with an interest in sustainability and how to design communication to educate people on the concept. I didn’t know much about the topic but my interest was sparked initially by both the documentary “Food Inc.” and by Michael Pollen’s book, “Omnivore’s Dilemma”. I was also influenced by the literature review on sustainability that brought home the reality of how unsustainably we live in the modern world. It seemed natural to look into food and the agricultural system in order to explore sustainability further. This arose partially from a personal interest in food and partially because sustainability can be understood in terms of the biological systems intrinsic to sustainable agriculture. I sought out a real-world problem that would help scope down such a broad topic, and this led me to organic food. I ended up working with the Vermont chapter of the Northeast Organic Farmers Association (NOFA). Their job was to market and promote Organic to their community as well as act as the third party organization certifying Vermont Farms based on USDA regulations. “How can we get people to choose Organic?” was the marketing problem that I wanted to design for. The heart of this is a communication issue, and I argue in this thesis that organic should be the vehicle through which they promote their environmental goals and values. For NOFA-VT, I believe that this is where their interest lies. The organization’s values that drive belief in organic should drive the messaging. Organic ends up not necessarily being the goal, but a means to an end, and that end is helping to instill environmental care among their consumers and hopefully the desire to live more sustainably based on those values

Abstract (sommario):
Given the severe environmental problems we are facing, it is crucial to communicate environmental knowledge to society in order to facilitate a trajectory towards sustainability. Therefore, the aim of this study is to explore how departments at Swedish universities, whose research revolves around environmental topics, communicate their research. At four departments at two universities, I examine based on semi-structured interviews (I) with whom and in what ways these departments communicate their research, (II) what the motivations are to do so, and (III) if there are challenges in communicating environmental science. For examining the departments’ communication strategies, I apply the theory of a multi-model framework of expert-public interaction. This multi-model framework, however, proved to be too simplistic for the complexity of reality, as the models underlying this framework are too intertwined, and not competing descriptions of reality. They rather describe specific aspects of communication practices.  The results show that even though there are two-way communication practices with both the government, specific stakeholders, and the general public, the mere dissemination of environmental knowledge seems to be the default practice of science communication at the examined departments - especially concerning the general public. The motivation to communicate environmental knowledge is of intrinsic nature, to give something back to society and to increase awareness about sustainability practices. Discovered challenges in science communication include a general lack of time to effectively communicate research results, as well as deficient education in science communication for researchers.  For transforming into sustainable societies communication strategies need to be improved.

This project is an action research study which presents the development of a system for product environmental performance internal communication for the Atlas Copco Tools AB scenario. The study is based on the study of available literature upon product-oriented environmental management systems and the European Integrated Product Policy scheme. Through the analysis of the literature and the scenario in study, a concept for integrated product environmental performance communication from the product development process to the marketing was elaborated. This concept presents an integrated product environmental information process through performance assessment, documentation, evaluation and final external communication. The concept implementation, then focus the development of the internal communication system as a basis for product-oriented environmental considerations integration into the company’s processes and business strategy. The final system recommended included product environmental performance assessment, through specifically identified assessment tools, and documentation, through the creation of an easy accessible product-oriented information database. Finally, the system also suggests an Ecodesign cycle for product continuous improvement focused on environmental performance.

Understanding the short-and long-term impacts of a biomonitoring and exposure project and reporting personal results back to study participants is critical for guiding future efforts, especially in the context of environmental justice. The purpose of this study was to evaluate learning outcomes from environmental communication efforts and whether environmental health literacy goals were met in an environmental justice community. We conducted 14 interviews with parents who had participated in the University of Arizona's Metals Exposure Study in Homes and analyzed their responses using NVivo, a qualitative data management and analysis program. Key findings were that participants used the data to cope with their challenging circumstances, the majority of participants described changing their families' household behaviors, and participants reported specific interventions to reduce family exposures. The strength of this study is that it provides insight into what people learn and gain from such results communication efforts, what participants want to know, and what type of additional information participants need to advance their environmental health literacy. This information can help improve future report back efforts and advance environmental health and justice.

Abstract (sommario):
This exploratory study aims to find out the challenges multinational corporations are facing when communicating about the ecological pillar of sustainability internally. By conducting an in-depth investigation of one multinational company, the study identifies three themes which imply potential drawbacks for the company’s goal to become an environmental pioneer within the operating industry. The first obstacle is related to the abstract content and intrinsic character of the sustainability idea. Furthermore, complex international business structures including different target groups hamper the internal sustainability communication, which pursues a peculiarly wide audience and is therefore dependent on the multiplier effect for the spread of information. Moreover, the intrinsic value of sustainability causes a priority lack, perception difficulties of the communicated messages as well as gaps between attitude and behavior. A long time period is required in order for the internal communication to achieve a change. All in all, especially the abstract, voluntary and intrinsic character of sustainability makes the communication uniquely difficult and thus demanding an overall change of the society’s attitude and prospect towards the topic.

Abstract (sommario):
The dominant approach of communicating climate change and environmental issues is through threats, shock and fear. However, several studies have examined the effects of threatening communication and found that the expected behaviour change only occurs in rare cases. As an alternative to threatening communication, I suggest using nonviolent communication for communicating sustainability threats. Conceptualising nonviolent environmental communication (NVEC) suggests that people are more likely to adopt and perform pro-environmental behaviour when messages about environmental issues are transferred via nonviolent communication. A meta-analysis is conducted to create the intersection between nonviolent forms of communication and environmental communication, which creates the theoretical framework of NVEC. Afterwards an analytical framework is created, which is used in the explorative content analysis. For this pilot experiment, the Eat Planet Based campaign of the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) has been chosen. The results show the characteristics of nonviolent environmental communication in theory and in practice, and highlight questions about the underlying power relations, contrasting threats and the denial of responsibility in the climate change discourse.

Abstract (sommario):
This study proposes biosocial reciprocity framework in environmental communication, which suggests the interdependent relationships between mass media, people's attitudes, and the physical environment. Biosocial reciprocity is applied to analyze the mass media's possible roles in giant panda conservation in China. The mass media's image construction of giant pandas is assessed through a content analysis of People's Daily (1995 to 2004); the conservation awareness, activities, and environment changes are assessed by a review of the country's giant panda conservation history and policies. The result suggests active interrelations among the media, Chinese attitudes toward wildlife, and the loss of wild panda population and habitat. The study urges that to positively influence the natural world, much needs to be done to improve the Chinese media's effectiveness in fostering grassroots environmental value and awareness. Biosocial reciprocity provides a practical conceptual framework for this study to sort out media-related linkages between the social and physical world of giant panda conservation.

Cette thèse est consacrée à la question de l’information fournie aux consommateurs par les marchés ou les Organisations Non Gouvernementales (ONG) sur la qualité environnementale des produits. La problématique s’inscrit dans un contexte où d’une part, les consommateurs prennent davantage en compte cette dimension dans leur choix de consommation et d’autre part, les entreprises affichent de plus en plus une responsabilité sociale ou environnementale dont la réalité est souvent contestée. La remise en question progressive de la crédibilité de la certification verte mène à notre premier travail qui analyse le rôle du prix comme un moyen de communication alternatif. Le but est d'examiner comment une firme verte en concurrence avec une firme brune peut résoudre le problème d'asymétrie de l'information. Pour cela, nous développons un modèle de duopole verticalement différencié dans lequel les firmes peuvent signaler leur qualité à travers les prix. Afin de représenter une concurrence accrue sur le segment de basse qualité, nous faisons l'hypothèse que le bien brun est tarifé au coût marginal. Le résultat est extrême : il n'existe aucune situation où la firme verte peut résoudre le problème d'asymétrie de l'information. Le second travail prend en compte le rôle des ONG dans le processus informatif concernant le type des firmes. L'étude de l'interaction entre, la stratégie de signal en prix de la firme et, l'information donnée par l'ONG mène à des résultats prometteurs concernant la diffusion de l'information sur la qualité environnementale. Lorsque les consommateurs ne peuvent pas vérifier l'engagement environnemental, les firmes peuvent être défiantes à opérer des changements dans leur processus de production pour prendre en compte ces problématiques. Nous montrons comment la surveillance imparfaite peut atténuer ce problème d'aléa moral. De ce fait, nous complexifions le modèle standard de signal en prix en permettant aux consommateurs d'utiliser les résultats d'enquête sous diverses formes comme complément d'information. Avant d'envoyer un signal aux consommateurs, les firmes décident ou non de s'engager à résoudre des problèmes environnementaux. Sans le contrôle de l'ONG, les firmes ne s'engagent pas dans la résolution de ces problèmes car il est impossible pour elles d'envoyer un signal crédible via le prix. Avec le contrôle de l'ONG, il existe des équilibres dans lesquels les firmes investissent pour atténuer les problèmes environnementaux et arrivent à signaler leur choix via le prix. Dans un troisième travail nous nous intéressons à la nature de l’information émise par l’ONG. Soit une révélation accréditant la firme, soit une preuve discréditant la firme. Ces types de preuves vont de pair avec les stratégies de "championing" et de "shaming". Dans cet esprit, nous rendons endogène le choix du signal de l'ONG qui interagit avec la stratégie de signal de la firme. Nous analysons l'effet de ces deux différentes stratégies sur l'équilibre en signal des firmes et la stratégie d'information optimale de l'ONG. La technologie ici est exogène, et le consommateur est parfaitement bayésien par rapport aux deux signaux qu'il reçoit. Nous trouvons que la stratégie de "shaming" réduit le coût du signal pour le bon type et peut même rétablir le prix en information complète. La stratégie de "championing" peut faire disparaître les incitations du marché à révéler la vérité. Concernant le comportement informatif de l'ONG, lorsque le marché révèle l'information, celle-ci est indifférente entre adopter une stratégie de "shaming" ou de "championing". This thesis focuses on the question of the information transmitted to consumers by the markets and Non Governmental Organizations (NGOs) on the environmental quality of products. This work takes place in a context where, on one hand, consumers' awareness increase concerning this dimension, and on the other hand, firms increasingly display a social or environmental responsibility whose reality is often contested. The first paper investigates the role of price as a possible substitute channel of communication. The purpose is to examine how a green firm competing against a brown firm can solve the asymmetric information issue. For this purpose, we develop a simple vertically differentiated duopoly model where firms can signal their quality through prices. To represent an increasing pressure of the competition on the low-quality segment, we make the hypothesis that the brown good is sold at the marginal cost. The result is extreme: there do not exist any situations where the green firm can solve the asymmetric information issue. The second paper takes into account the informative role of NGOs concerning the type of firms. We are interested in how their informational behavior impacts the signaling strategy of firms. The interaction between the price signaling strategy of the firm and the information released by the NGO yield fruitful results concerning the path of green information.When consumers cannot verify corporate social goodwill, firms may be reluctant to uphold a pledge of social goodwill. We show how imperfect monitoring can mitigate this moral hazard problem. We augment the standard model of price signaling by allowing consumers to use the results of independent monitoring as a complementary source of information. Monitoring corrects for consumers' arbitrary beliefs. Before sending a price signal to consumers, firms pledge or not to invest in social goodwill.With no monitoring, firms do not abide by their pledges of social goodwill when they fail to send a credible signal via price.With monitoring, there exist equilibria in which a firm invests in social goodwill and succeeds in signaling its choice via price.It is worth mentioning that the hard evidence displayed by NGOs can be of two different natures. In this Chapter, the types of discovered evidence go in pairs with shaming and championing strategies. In this spirit, we endogenize the signaling choice of the NGO, which interacts with the signaling strategy of a firm. We seek to analyze the effect of these two different strategies on the equilibrium of signaling of the firm and the optimal informative behavior of the NGO.The technology choice here is exogenous, and the consumer is perfectly Bayesian according to the two different signals received. Either a proof discredits the firm, or a proof accredits the firm. We find that the shaming strategy reduces the signaling cost for the high type and can even restore the perfect information outcome. The championing strategy can make incentives for the market to reveal the truth disappear. Concerning the optimal informative behavior of the NGO, if the market reveals information, the NGO is indifferent between adopting a shaming strategy and adopting a championing strategy. When the market conceals information, the strategy depends on the difference between the shaming and championing efficiency and the distribution of the firm in the market

The theoretical contribution of this study is the successful testing of legitimacy theory in the context of an emerging economy. This study finds a low extent (13.57%) of social (10.44%) and environmental (17.98%) disclosure (SED) practices of Indian textile and apparel listed firms over 2010-2012. Firm size (+), brand development (+), audit committee independence (+), profitability (+), CEO duality (-) and award obtained (+) are significant predictors of the extent of SED. Economically, firm size and brand development are major determinants.

Un ulteriore passaggio è stata la creazione di uno strumento di comunicazione, una nuova etichetta ambientale, realizzata per essere utilizzata dalle aziende per comunicare le loro performance ambientali e quindi il loro impegno al miglioramento continuo, e dai consumatori per ottenere maggiori informazioni sull’impatto ambientale dei prodotti acquistati quotidianamente, al fine di accrescere il proprio senso critico ed effettuare acquisti consapevoli.
The thesis begins with an analysis of the nutritional aspects of foods. In particular, the concept of balanced diet has been discussed, by referring to the principles of "mediterranean diet". Just from this food model, the “optimation” draws inspiration, a technique developed and used to plan meals consistent with specific nutritional standards (15/30/55 between protein, fat and carbohydrate on the total energy intake, typically Mediterranean). These food preparations have been tested through sensory analysis methods. The next step is the extension of "nutritional optimization" concept to the "environmental optimization” one, owing to the presumed lower environmental impact of the Mediterranean diet. LCA (Life Cycle Assessment) is the technique used to assess the environmental impact of various food products, such as frozen vegetables, cured meats, dairy products. A further step is the creation of a communication tool, a new environmental label, designed to be used by companies to communicate their environmental performance and therefore their commitment to continuous improvement, and by consumers to obtain more information on the environmental impact of the foods daily consumed, in order to increase their critical sense and make purchases in a conscious way.

Applying a human rights perspective on plurilingualism as a national as well as a transnational concern, with a focus on the interaction taking place in foreign language teaching and learning practices at a Swedish Special Needs School for pupils with deafness or impaired hearing, the overall aim of this study is to describe and discuss this interaction in performative terms, i.e. in terms of what is said by whom, to whom, why, and with what consequences. Although extensive research has already been carried out within the field of plurilingualism, for example from linguistic, sociological and political points of departure, research on plurilingualism with regard to foreign language teaching and learning interaction in Swedish sign language contexts has been largely missing. The ambition of this work, therefore, is to add to the diversity of research on plurilingualism. It is also hoped that this work will contribute to the debate in educational politics concerning a human rights perspective on plurilingualism, especially with regard to modern European languages as a transnational issue. Methodologically, an ethnographic approach has been employed to document, by means of two video cameras in combination with field notes, the practices of communication emerging from teacherstudent interaction. Using notions from Conversational Analysis and alongside established conventions of sign language transcription, a model of transcription was designed for the specific purpose of describing, in detail, the plurilingual interaction where Swedish sign language is used as a mediating tool. Three lessons in English and four lessons – or lesson extracts – in Spanish, at secondary level in a Special Needs School for pupils with deafness or impaired hearing, have been documented and analysed. The analyses were carried out in two different steps, one describing and one discussing the results of the empirical investigation. The institutionally formalised interaction observed appears to have contributed to the heavy dominance of the teacher, and of the IRE sequence used during the lessons, to a much greater extent than students’ deafness or impaired hearing. Although the aims and objectives of the curricular texts intended for these students, as well as for hearing ones, are expressed in communicative terms – for example, learning to read texts of relatively high complexity, or developing writing skills for communication across linguistic boundaries – almost all the lessons that were investigated concerned the translation of isolated words into sign language, often taken out of their English or Spanish context. Nonetheless, the students took part in the classroom interaction when protesting, joking, asking questions and helping each other. Thus, the teacher dominance noted does not imply suppression, but rather a tendency on the part of the teacher to underestimate the students, as well as reflecting a selective tradition within foreign language teaching and learning practices in a general Swedish school context. However, when viewed from a human rights perspective on future plurilingual European citizens, using their language skills to reach out into the world for mutual understanding, the students involved in the language teaching and learning interaction observed in this study may hardly be expected to reach out across linguistic boundaries, at least not as a result of the language education they have experienced.

This performance ethnography analyzes the means by which performers at Tampa, Florida‘s Bay Area Renaissance Festival constitute community and gender through performance. Renaissance Festivals are themed weekend events that ostensibly seek to allow visitors to experience life in an English Renaissance village. Beginning with the theoretical assumption that performance is constitutive of culture, community, and identity, and undergirded by David Boje‘s festivalism, Richard Schechner‘s restored behavior, Victor Turner‘s liminoid communitas and Judith Butler‘s performative agency, The Festival is explored as a celebratory community that engages in social change through personal transformation. Employing reflexive ethnography and narrative as inquiry, Chapter Two catalogues and analyzes a broad range of festival performances, from stage acts and handcraft production, to participatory improvisation, dance, and song. Playful and liminoid, these performances invite participants to make performance commitments and mutually to produce community through participative performance, celebratory objects, and the surrender of personal space. Chapter Three argues that performances of alternative masculinities at festival play out against the backdrop of R.W. Connell‘s heteronormative masculinities. These alternative performances break down social barriers, promote self-definition, and provide agency in the embodiment gendered experiences. Likewise, Chapter Four features Festival‘s feminine performances that reveal the community to be a ―wench‘s world‖ privileging Judith Butler‘s notion of performative agency in order to enable communities of difference. The Wench, the Queen, and the Pirate She- ing all embody feminine power and serve as archetypes of feminine narratives that privilege self-definition. This study demonstrates Festival to be a women-centered community that engages in a mythopoeia of feminist history. Acknowledging Festival as a multi-vocal community of mythopoets, this ethnography significantly extends the work of previous research on Renaissance Festivals. Rather than focusing on Festival performances as attempts at historical ―authenticity,‖ this study reveals Festival‘s mythological stance and the means by which performers embody mythology and archetype to their own purposes. Moving away from an audience centered discussion of performance, this study demonstrates how individual performers, through personal transformation, become agents of change through performance.

Speaking through the voice of another is a practice-based PhD that employs art practice to interrogate translation (as a textual and verbal practice). It uses linguistic translation as both the subject and the method to make multimedia artworks (text, sound, performance and events) that examine and analyse the translation process itself. The research has been conducted from my own subjective position, as an artist and monolingual speaker (a translation user rather than translation professional), investigating translation as a dialogic, subjective, embodied and performative phenomena. It adopts a self-reflexive methodology that places equal value in theoretical and experiential knowledge and proposes that an artist-led inquiry challenges assumptions, translation protocols, conventions and normative behaviour. The artists and artworks discussed in the thesis examine the translators /translation s agency and its linguistic performativity; exploiting it s creative potential as an artistic process/medium and amplifying its pivotal role within the expanding global art world. This transdisciplinary approach has resulted in the creation of translation zones - works and events devised to engage monolingual and multilingual individuals, professional translators, practitioners and public(s) in the process of translation - that offer an alternative perspective on translation (to research carried out within Translation Studies). Consequently, generating new knowledge that contributes to our understanding of translation and art and beyond both disciplines, creating a new transdisciplinary genre of art-and-translation. The artworks are an integral part of the thesis submission; samples and documentation of these are accessible within the full interactive PDF ersion. The layout of the thesis has been specifically designed to ease communication of the research, it uses various visual cues to distinguish between different types of information and to demonstrate my research praxis; the continual movement between theory and practice.

Science communication research has developed theories about the way science communication operates in practice, but further investigation is needed to understand how well these models describe the practice of science communication on the ground. This thesis explores the relationship between theoretical models of science communication and the practice of science communication in long-term ecological research sites (LTERs). In particular, this exploratory study focuses on the deficit model, the dialogue model, and the participation model. I conducted semi-structured interviews to understand how science communication practitioners’ views about their work relate to established models of science communication. In particular, I asked about how they view their roles and responsibilities, how they view their audience(s), and how they view ethical considerations of their work. Results suggested that the dialogue model was the most dominant model. The deficit and participation models also appeared, though less frequently. Many practitioners are aware of the shortcomings of deficit model approaches to science communication, but may not have the resources or experience necessary to engage in the intensive public engagement activities of participation model approaches.

This paper argues the importance of communicating messages to a general public about the important issues of the environmental state of the Earth, and it proposes that solutions need to be offered to help each individual act ecologically responsibly when using Earth’s natural resources. Further, this paper suggests that choosing an effective medium to engage in communication with a general public is crucial.

To this end, I asked two questions that formed the basis of my research: 1. What research or personal experiences suggest that there is an urgent need to communicate messages to a general public about the environmental state of the Earth? 2. Assuming the Earth is in a dire state and its environmental well-being is in jeopardy, through which medium of communication might one achieve the most widespread and significant impact in an effort to spread environmental messages?

I realized that the best way for the general public to become informed and guided is via short, dramatized films that take one environmental subject at a time, bring attention to an issue, and suggest a solution that each individual can exercise. A short film on fossil fuel use, specifically electricity, serves as the data section of my thesis, and I reflect on the making of that film in my conclusion.

Connection to and appreciate for the natural world are directly linked to positive experiences participating in outdoor nature-based activities. These direct experiences have been declining over the past decade, causing concerns about the perceptions of nature by populations that don’t participate in nature-based activities. This study examines framing of media coverage about human-wildlife conflicts and its implications for perception building by those audiences with less experience in the natural world. Data were collected via daily newspapers across the Intermountain West from 2010 to 2015. Results demonstrated that there were significant differences between newspapers serving larger, more urban communities and smaller, more rural communities. Findings indicate that urban audiences are exposed to messages that discourage participation in the natural world. Messages regarding human-wildlife conflict in newspapers serving larger, more urban communities should be reframed to avoid negative perceptions of nature and to motivate connection to the natural world.

Inter-vehicle communication enabled by wireless technology is an emerging area of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS). This technology has generated great interest among automobile manufacturers and ITS researchers alike because of its potential to improve safety and non-safety ITS applications by supporting data collection and dissemination at the individual vehicle level. A modelling framework based on a microscopic traffic simulator is presented in this thesis to explore the effects of wireless Vehicle-to-Vehicle (V2V) communication based ITS applications on traffic performance. Microscopic traffic simulators describe the interaction between drivers and infrastructure at individual vehicle level. The behaviour models in microscopic traffic simulators describe driving decisions like route choice, car-following and lane-changing. The existing behaviour model is extended to incorporate the effect of V2V communication based applications by tying information generated by the application to the behaviour model. A case study on a road network in Singapore with green light prediction application as the V2V communication application is implemented. The car-following model in MITSIMLab is modified to account for speed advisories generated by green light prediction application. The application shows gains in travel time savings and a smoother traffic flow as a result of the green light prediction. Higher improvements across penetration rates were observed at high demand levels. The incremental impact of the application on traffic performance tapers off at higher penetration rates. Drivers responding to the speed advisories also affect vehicles immediately following them. Hence the effective penetration rate of the application is higher than actual penetration rate. The results imply that the green light prediction application would reduce the average number of halts per trip by approximately 10% at existing travel demand. The current model can be extended to test other V2V based ITS applications and to couple with a wireless network simulator to represent wireless data flows more realistically.

The thesis presents a set of simulations of models and algorithms for wireless communication systems. The simulations are developed using graphical MATLAB interfaces, and cover the fundamentals of wireless channel modeling, the advantages and limitations of antenna beamforming in multiuser systems, and the underlying principles of OFDM. The thesis targets two types of audiences in particular: students and wireless industry professionals. For the former, it constitutes an excellent complement to lecture notes, and for the latter, it is an efficient way to review the key principles and technologies. The doctoral dissertation deals with the impact of the use of new information and communication technologies (ICTs) on global environmental governance. The objective of the research is to analyze the influence of these technologies on the legitimacy of global governance tools and on the competences of global non-state actors –as part of global civil society– involved in processes of environmental politics. After defining the context in which new ICTs emerge, the thesis develops two case studies. The first one analyzes the resolution and recommendation process of the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN). It illustrates that the use of new ICT improves the participation and the creation of consensus around certain values, and shows therefore that the use of new ICTs has a positive impact on the legitimacy of this global governance mechanism. The second case study examines the use of new ICTs by IUCN and demonstrates that it has no substantial impact on the internal capacities of the organization. However, it has a positive yet limited impact on the external competences of IUCN, since it improves the organization’s capacity to communicate only with its traditional audience.
La tesis doctoral trata el impacto de la generalización de las nuevas tecnologías de la información y de la comunicación (TIC) sobre la gobernanza global del medio ambiente. El objetivo de la investigación es analizar la influencia de estas nuevas tecnologías sobre la legitimidad de los mecanismos de gobernanza global y sobre las capacidades de los actores globales no estatales –como parte de la sociedad civil global– implicados en estos procesos de política medioambiental . Después de definir el contexto en el cual emergen las nuevas TIC, la tesis desarrolla dos casos de estudio. El primero de ellos analiza la evolución del proceso de resoluciones y recomendaciones de la Unión Internacional para la Conservación de la Naturaleza (UICN) y permite ilustrar que el uso de las nuevas TIC mejora la participación en este proceso y la creación de consenso en torno a determinados valores. Por ello, el uso de las nuevas TIC tiene un impacto positivo sobre la legitimidad de este mecanismo de gobernanza global. El segundo caso analiza el uso de las nuevas TIC por parte de la UICN y demuestra que no tiene un impacto sustancial sobre las capacidades internas de esta organización. Sin embargo, sí cabe reseñar un impacto positivo pero limitado sobre las competencias externas de la UICN, de modo que mejora la capacidad de la organización para comunicar tan sólo con su audiencia tradicional.

In the light of a market that showcases increased hesitation and skepticism over green marketing and environmental communication, is the necessity of a well executed corporate communication greater than ever. What can be seen on the market is corporations that are unintentionally using motive greenwashing as a tool for attracting and persuading consumers to favour the corporations image. Prior research within green marketing has put a large focus on greenwashing in product context and the effects of it on consumer behaviour. In this study greenwashing is examined in a communication context and its effect on different aspects of consumer behaviour and attitude.

This dissertation examines how gender operates as agencies for women’s environmental justice activism. I contend that women’s activism, often taking place through collaborative and collective means, presents new opportunities to theorize rhetorical agency that include women-centric and leaderless forms of grassroots organizing. To this end, I explore various agencies for women’s collaborative environmental communication—motherhood, eco-spirituality, and political calls for recognition—that work to test the boundary conditions of rhetorical studies in ways that find empowerment and resistance in a collective rather than in any one particular person. In developing these accounts, I construct a framework that emphasizes the agentic capabilities possible through collaborative rhetorics of resistance—the communicative performances of defiance and empowerment put forth by groups of people that often result in the articulation of collective identities, the challenging of dominant structures and institutions of power, and work to inspire mutual critique and reflection in others. Theories of rhetorical agency assist in documenting and illuminating the ways speakers navigate discursive and material constraints as they bring their audience to action, but often do so by privileging the rhetoric of individual (male) speakers. By exploring collaborative rhetorics of resistance, this dissertation project tests the boundary conditions of rhetorical agency and generates a more comprehensive understanding of how loose networks of people enter into, take part in, and possibly redirect the course of environmental deliberations. This dissertation project is focused on the ways in which women rhetorically collaborate to craft collective subjectivities, protest environmental threats to their families and communities, and inspire mutual critique and reflection in others.

As the name suggests and according to the developers’ intention, Social Networking Sites (SNS) are designed as tools for users to make friends and express themselves. However, the usage of SNS apparently goes beyond these aspects with more plurality and possibilities unforeseen by their conceivers. Much evidence shows that communicating about the environment and nature on social networking sites is a prominent phenomenon. However, few researchers have shed light on the individual use of SNS for environmental communication. Individuals in both China and Sweden generate, seek, disseminate and discuss environmental news and information on SNS. This exploratory study employs qualitative methods to examine this practice and compares the differences and similarities between Chinese and Swedish individuals in terms of environmental communication. Focusing on motivation and engagement, the study explains and describes why and how individuals in these two countries are engaged in environmental communication. The study also examines the social and political implications of this phenomenon by discussing the relationship among new technology, communication and social changes.

Abstract (sommario):
The apparel industry is pointed out as an industry highly contributing with negative environmental impacts in all different stages of the production to consumption chain. Companies within the outdoor industry have been trying to combat this issue by producing apparel that are less harmful for the environment and by encouraging consumers to keep, care and repair for their apparel over time. Educative communication with customers regarding the environmental issues deriving from apparel consumption is seen where some brands go as far as to engaging in environmental activism. Regarding retailers within the outdoor industry, the use of educational communication needs to incorporate many different brands and thus communicating about environmentally preferable apparel is more complex. This study investigates the Swedish retailer Naturkompaniet’s approach to educational communication in order to identify what possibilities there are to encourage consumers to purchase environmentally preferable apparel and to care for it over time. The study find that Naturkompaniet does use educational communication to encourage consumers to purchase environmentally preferable apparel to some extent. It also identifies room for improvement and give suggestions on how the communication can be developed further.

O conceito de Smart City surge da combinação do paradigma de Internet of Things (IoT) sobre contextos urbanos aliado à exploração de soluções de Tecnologias de Informação e Comunicação (TIC). O típico cenário de Smart City tem de lidar com desafios, tais como as elevadas quantidades de sensores e geradores de dados, dos quais alguns são colocados em dispositivos de grande mobilidade, visando a recolha e geração de todo o tipo de informações e levando ao aumento do número de dispositivos comunicantes. Esta dissertação foca o desenvolvimento e implementação de uma plataforma heterogénea de sonorização ambiental com o objectivo de servir de infraestrutura para aplicações no âmbito das Smart Cities. Esta pretende tirar proveito da utilização de múltiplas tecnologias de comunicação, nomeadamente tecnologias de longo e curto alcance. Para al em disto, visto que a plataforma visa ambientes urbanos, esta tira proveito de uma rede oportunista e tolerante a atrasos, Delay Tolerant Network (DTN), através de entidades m oveis que circulam pela cidade, nomeadamente bicicletas. Assim sendo, esta dissertação propõe: (1) o desenho e desenvolvimento da rede e dos seus constituintes; (2) uma extensão a um protocolo de controlo de acesso ao meio, Medium Access Control (MAC), para a tecnologia LoRa com o objectivo de o dotar compatível para ambientes de gateways múltiplas; (3) novas estratégias de encaminhamento para a rede tolerante a atrasos, tendo em consideração a topologia e as características apresentadas por esta. As avaliações realizadas permitiram concluir que o protocolo MAC para LoRa em ambientes de gateways múltiplas proposto contribui para um aumento da escalabilidade da rede, bem como para uma melhoria do seu desempenho. Relativamente às estratégias de encaminhamento propostas para a DTN, os testes realizados permitiram avaliar o impacto que cada estratégia tem sobre o comportamento da rede, nomeadamente a taxa de entrega dos pacotes de dados, a sobrecarga da rede, o número de pacotes transmitidos, entre outros. Com estes resultados foi possível perceber as in- suficiências que as funcionalidades propostas têm sobre a solução geral, e identificar as caraterísticas necessárias de uma solução escalável para a recolha de dados massivos num ambiente de IoT.
The Smart City concept is the combination of the Internet of Things (IoT) paradigm under an urban context with the exploitation of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) solutions. The typical Smart City scenario has to deal with an extensive amount of sensors and data generators, some of them placed in high mobile devices, deployed to collect and generate all type of information which will increase the number of communicating machines. This dissertation focuses on the development and implementation of a heterogeneous environmental sensing platform to serve as an infrastructure for Smart City applications. It aims to take advantage of the use of multiple communication technologies, namely long and short range. Being within an urban environment, the platform bene ts from an opportunistic and Delay Tolerant Network (DTN) through mobile entities that travel over the city, such as bicycles. Therefore, this dissertation proposes: (1) the design and development of the network and its elements; (2) an extension to a LoRa Medium Access Control (MAC) protocol in order to endow it with capabilities to operate in multi-gateway environments; and lastly, (3) new forwarding strategies for the opportunistic network that takes into consideration the network topology. The performed evaluations showed that the proposed multi-gateway LoRa MAC protocol contributes to increase the LoRa network scalability, as well as its performance. The performed tests to the proposed DTN forwarding strategies evaluate the impact of each strategy on the network behavior, namely the delivery ratio, network overhead, number of transmitted packets, among others. As a result, it is possible to perceive which are the in- uences introduced by the proposed functionalities on the overall solution, and identify the characteristics of a scalable solution to collect massive data in an IoT environment.
