Abstract (sommario):
Examples abound of highly politicized instances of risk controversies, such as the climate debate, counterterrorism, and the commercialization of genetically modified organisms (GMOs). Numerous reasons, such as divergent perspectives, ways of communication, and interests, explain why involved actors often find themselves locked in a controversy. For instance, in the GMO debates environmental politicians, NGOs, industrial parties, consumers, and GMO scientists have exerted very distinct ways of communication, resulting in a highly polarized and contested gene-risk landscape. As a consequence, some industrial players have left or terminated R&D activities in the EU, while other scientists escape the gaze of EU-regulations and started experimenting in places with a different approach to GMO regulation and control.

Abstract (sommario):
This study is a meta-criticism of Performance Studies conducted in the Korean theater academia from 2000 to 2023 on the subject of performativity and theater. The subjects of the study are 100 domestic academic papers published in domestic academic journals, and the purpose of the study is to reveal the overall trends, limitations, and significance of the Korean Performance Studies. As a resul t of anal yzing the research patterns into four categories: materiality, semiotics, media, and aesthetics, performance studies were mainly limited to genre aesthetics, and there was a lack of research on the communication methods of materiality at various levels, and problems with methodological techniques in the writing process. The most significant fact is that the Korean traditional performance and modern and contemporary theater have begun to be reread and reflected under the keyword of performativity. In addition, Korean Performance Studies have been conducted on how to use it in various areas and expand it into life beyond theater arts.

Abstract (sommario):
This article outlines the discursive construction of the refugee situation in Ethiopia’s Tigray region by examining photographs found on the United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHRC) United Kingdom website. The purpose is to discern humanitarian aid communication discourse not simply for its informational value, but also in its performative force of narrative to frame the refugee crisis as one that merits support (Chouliaraky 2017). Multimodal CDA and social semiotics (Kress and van Leeuwen 1999; Kress and van Leeuwen 2017) were employed in order to break down visual communication into elements, and to systematically reveal the performative practice of meaning in relation to the categories of settings, the represented participants, actions, angles, and proxemics. Both qualitative and quantitative analyses were conducted in order to determine the number of photos with a given feature. By highlighting the plight of those forcibly displaced and emphasising their uniqueness and personal experiences - in contrast to the dehumanised massified representation found in western media (Chouliaraky 2017; Adi and Cheregi 2015) -, the phenomenon of their forced fleeing from Tigray is humanised. In line with Bellander (2021), the UNHRC is constructed as being trustworthy and actionable, and refugees are clearly depicted as being in urgent need of support. Visitors to the UK website are invited to feel they are involved with the life of the refugees and morally engaged in “the work performed by the organization” (Bellander 2021: 310). By means of the combination of specific affection drawing on discourses of morality, solidarity and ethical equality, the overall images provide “the symbolic conditions under which we are invited to imagine the predicament of these sufferers” (Chouliaraky 2017: 5) and in so doing to appeal to a force that will work towards a practical push towards action.

Abstract (sommario):
Purpose Research on corporate social responsibility (CSR) reporting highlights an increasing lack of transparency in the information reported along with concerns surrounding overall reporting practices. One area that needs exploration is how chief executive officers (CEOs) convey messages in relation to CSR. This paper aims to investigate the linkage between CEO’s statements (words and images) in relation to CSR and the performativity of such communication. Design/methodology/approach The study analysed CEOs statements from five Malaysian companies contained in 2016, 2017 and 2018 standalone sustainability and annual reports. The texts and visuals are analysed by using discourse analysis. Findings The findings uncover three main discourses (economic, environmental and social) along with other discourses (achievements and recognition and challenges). The texts and images are found to be lacking in clarity and consistency and in many ways leave the stakeholders to make their own conclusions about the reported information. Originality/value The research indicates that while the leaders can be more direct to their stakeholders, however, the opportunity is not always capitalised. Overall, the analysis suggests an increasing scientism in CEOs messaging in relation to CSR as a tool to enhance perceived accountability of the business. The study also suggests avenues for improvement. This paper contributes to the emergence of different types of discourses that are being upheld by CEOs in their statements on CSR in Malaysian context. The discourses identified provide interesting insights into how CSR is perceived by the leaders.

Abstract (sommario):
This essay develops performatively through somatic research related to conscious listening in verbal and embodied communication. The poiesis ensues from phenomenology, butoh, and Zen, explaining butoh as a protest form of dance and therapy with origins in mid-20th Century Japan and still continuing today. On walking back, the text slips inward—awakening matters of environmental precarity and a somatic ethic of planetary care.

I identify meaning as a property of utterance, the situated instance of language use, and locate its presence in the soundscape as a point of reference for all humans that constitute a particular acoustic community. My starting point is the premise that our experience of aural space and the soundscape are so profoundly connected to our experience of what it is to be human that there is a direct relationship, established over millennia, between the environments in which communication takes place and the ways in which we communicate. Further to this, I suggest that sound is the binding agent in a dialogic relationship between consciousness, environment and context. I argue that this binding operates through a process in which differing degrees of awareness and recognition of soundscape features, structures and inter-relations facilitate a shift between basic hearing functions and more informed modes of listening. This leads, in turn, to expression through mimicry, performativity and utterance. In other words, the dialogic characteristic of the relationship is located in the reciprocity between hearing, speaking and environmental phenomena. The central hypothesis of this paper states that, without sound binding us into this dialogic relationship with environment and context, we would not have been able to develop inter-human sounds in order to function as social beings. I argue that this relationship underpins the formation of linguistic tools that both help structure, and provide access to the perceptual and conceptual knowledge of the world that we store in memory. This combined knowledge structure informs both our external engagements and sense of self. Both my initial premise and hypothesis are supported by theoretical and practical research, including participant observation and feedback from a series of sound installations designed to progress the inquiry.

Abstract (sommario):
The article analyzes approaches to the study of phenomena and concepts of performativity, discourse and communication, and makes it possible to trace how various types of communication are interconnected in the structure of artistic culture. It has been established that in modern society, performativity, discourse and communication provide a higher level of generalization and prevalence than in previous historical periods, which leads to an expansion of the subject field for the study of these phenomena. The aim of the work is to research and systematize existing theories conceptualizing performativity, communication and discourse in the mode of humanitarian knowledge. This approach will contribute to solving the scientific problem of clarifying the conceptual and categorical apparatus of modern cultural studies and art history. Methodology of work. The theoretical and methodological basis of the study were philosophical and general scientific approaches, principles and methods that made it possible to analyze the phenomena of performativity, discourse and communication from different-vector positions: the method of generalization, made it possible to determine the place of performativity, discourse and communication in the worldview paradigm due to the analysis of ambiguous formulations and statements about the phenomena, which were presented in various sources; an interdisciplinary approach ensured the use of the latest theoretical developments in the social sciences and humanities; the sociological approach made it possible to consider the phenomena of performativity, discourse and communication at the macrosocial and microsocial levels.

Abstract (sommario):
This article presents an attempt to (re)construct a concept of performativity based on a systems theoreticalapproach. It is suggested that performativity could be understood as a way of observing the world with the help of the distinction “person” and “role”. Performativity thus describes how the communication betweenindividuals and groups establishes a structural coupling between the consciousness of the psychic system andcommunication in social systems. This also allows the concept of performativity to investigate how values are generated and used in everyday communication. In a discussion with the concept presented by Professor Erica Fischer-Lichte and by offering an alternative reading of the performance The Lips of Thomas by Mariana Abrahmovic it is suggested that a concept of performativity based on the distinction person/role prove to be more productive analytically.

Abstract (sommario):
The ecological transition is investing the field of environmental communication by mobilising two distinct communicational phenomena, documentary film and transitional civic initiatives revealing attitudes that renew the interconnection between our tradition and the living world. By letting our comprehension of the way species function broaden, the permaculture-inspired ecological transition would allow for another relation to others. In communication sciences, players of the transition movement would be focusing on the present in numerous countries, thus encouraging the creativity of its protagonists based on their abilities and ensuring that daily actions would build the world of tomorrow. Developed by individuals with increased capabilities on environmental issues, inclusive, this cultural movement would rely on different narrative structures composing a communication gathering facts and sensitive experiences. From a corpus of movies that marked a turning point in the field of ecological documentary films, and the observation of a new permaculture-based transition project, the research conducted in information and communication sciences using an inductive and anthropological method prioritises the study of processes set up by the protagonists as well as the narrative processes employed, allowing to access interpersonal and inter-groups communications showing how people integrate notions of culture, performativity and acculturation in their daily lives. In a context where environmental communication calls up notions of fear, catastrophe and anxiety is the communication around the transition movement showing a change in heuristics?

Abstract (sommario):
This dissertation uses a case study of the recently proposed dam on the Mary River at Traveston Crossing in South-East Queensland to consider how individuals can become empowered to effect change in the environmental decision-making processes of the state through citizen action in the public sphere. The theoretical framework chosen to guide the analysis is an adaptation of Judith Butler’s theory of performativity (1997) that I refer to as political performativity. I also draw on social movement theory and media theory to examine how the processes of performativity help explain the practices involved in the public sphere actions taken to stop the Queensland Government’s proposed dam. The case study demonstrates that the initial speech acts of the state government’s announcement, and the way in which these were carried out, impacted on the life worlds of people involved. The protesters’ actions were not only symbolic of their struggle but also part of the creation of an alternative life world vastly different to that imposed upon them through the various speech acts of the Queensland Government. Lessons for the future include the development of more conscious strategies for activists in public sphere actions. Potential research resulting from this study includes a closer examination of the relationship between speech acts, emotions and public sphere action. The usefulness of political performativity in understanding emotions, public sphere action and power may better be served through participatory research methodologies. Further research directions are outlined.

Abstract (sommario):
The study explores a set of genre-hybrid reviews, 1999-2001, characterised by a standpoint of ecological rationality, and produced by a professional writer for a professional environmental management organisation. The interaction between such managers has not been studied before in terms of professional communication and was delineated as a new field of enquiry. The issues of tact and Face were important for this organisational community, which shared characteristics of contact communities and Communities of Practice. Methods used derive from studies of text in context, and organisational communication. The assembly of theoretical material is one outcome of the study, which tackled three questions: 1 To assess in what way the reviews made a contribution to the organisation, Weick's equivoque and the notion of the Fractal were combined to explain the text as an active organ for collaborative organisational learning and knowledge management. Thereby the texts are presumed to have contributed to the organisation's goal to enhance knowledge and practice in environmental management among managers drawn from diverse intellectual backgrounds. 2 To address the question of the technical characteristics of the reviews, narrative polyphony concepts provided suspension dialogia, which complemented the notion of translation suspension. 3 To address how the reviewer had managed to reproduce organisational patterns despite his inconsistent moral standpoint, the search for a theoretical position travelled through code-switching, pragmatics and translation, emerging with a concept similar to intersemiosis, labelled 'codehandling'. The combination of questions produced complex answers. Translation constructs, such as dynamic equivalence, increasingly emerged as productive and suitable to complement emerging endogenous approaches in environmental management literature. The genre-hybrid is argued to have altered the social function of the review. In prioritising interaction, it put at risk the organisation's strategic tact 10 structure. Nevertheless, the reviewer managed the risk within acceptable limits and produced popular and successful reviews.

Abstract (sommario):

Climate change is a hot topic today. It is important for companies to take

responsibility for the environment. For companies it is also important to

communicate their environmental efforts to its customers.

The aim of this study is to analyze how transportation companies communicate their

environmental efforts on the web. Europe’s largest transportation companies as well

as Asian and North American airlines are studied. Companies’ websites were

examined and evaluated on several criteria.

The study surprisingly showed that a lot of companies did not have any external

communication due to unavailable websites. There are significant geographical

differences in how companies communicate green.

Many transportation companies provide environmental information on their websites

however they need to be more convincing in doing so.

Abstract (sommario):
As one of the earliest attempts to apply immersive technology in environmental communication, this design research project tries to answer the following research question: how do we communicate the connections between food-related behaviors and environmental impacts through immersive storytelling? During the project, an immersive story called "Trik’s' Party" for dome shows and a journey map of an immersive visitor experience are created. These design outcomes and this paper are built on the knowledge of scientific findings, communication methods, content creations, and service design. To support the creation process, new sketching, storyboarding and prototyping methods were developed for dome content creations. The core message of this paper is that effective environmental communication is not just about informing the public about facts and data from scientific studies. It is also about giving individuals and communities the knowledge, tools and spaces to develop a vision of their own future. Immersive storytelling is one of the methods for creating these spaces. It has a large potential to raise public empathy with other people and their future-self when the long-term and abstract impacts of the environmental problems become more visible and comprehensible in an imaginary space.

Abstract (sommario):
This project explores how musical improvisational processes come into being through interacting discursive power relationships that are embodied and enacted through performance. By utilizing the concepts of framing and performativity I am able to show how discursive power constitutes the performance of improvisational music. To exemplify this theory, the project presents a case study examining a Grateful Dead cover band named Uncle John's Band that performs at Skipper's Smokehouse in Tampa, FL. Using an ethnographic methodology, the project articulates the dominant discursive power relationships that constitute Uncle John's Band's improvisational performances. The dominant discursive power relationships revolve around the lived philosophies and performance style of the Grateful Dead as embodied and communicated through performance by the members of Uncle John's Band. Dominant discursive power relationships also form among audience members as well as the staff at Skipper's Smokehouse. All of these power relationships constitute the performance of improvisational music. In a reflexive turn, the project also offers a re-articulation of ethnography through the tenets of improvisation. Finally, the project presents conclusions concerning the nature of researching improvisational music performance and some future directions for this study.

Abstract (sommario):
In 2006 an international standard, ISO 14025, was published on the principles and procedures of environmental product declarations (EPD). The standard gives requirements to the development of EPDs and PCRs and is used as a basis of EPD development within many EPD programmes globally. Despite an international standard, published EPDs today have different contents and format depending on who published the EPD. The main goal of EPDs is to provide objective, comparable and credible information about the environmental impacts of a product throughout its life cycle. These objectives can be diminished by the variations seen in EPDs and PCRs today. Through the mapping of six different international EPD programmes and the analysis of published PCRs and EPDs, this thesis shows that there is a need for communication between and harmonisation of EPD programmes at a global level. The main objective of this thesis is to contribute in the harmonisation of standards and guidelines for communication of environmental performance products and services in Norway. The thesis results in a recommendation to the Norwegian EPD Foundation within five areas; o format and layout of EPD o front page of EPD o environmental impact categories o user guide o online database

Abstract (sommario):
I began this thesis with an interest in sustainability and how to design communication to educate people on the concept. I didn’t know much about the topic but my interest was sparked initially by both the documentary “Food Inc.” and by Michael Pollen’s book, “Omnivore’s Dilemma”. I was also influenced by the literature review on sustainability that brought home the reality of how unsustainably we live in the modern world. It seemed natural to look into food and the agricultural system in order to explore sustainability further. This arose partially from a personal interest in food and partially because sustainability can be understood in terms of the biological systems intrinsic to sustainable agriculture. I sought out a real-world problem that would help scope down such a broad topic, and this led me to organic food. I ended up working with the Vermont chapter of the Northeast Organic Farmers Association (NOFA). Their job was to market and promote Organic to their community as well as act as the third party organization certifying Vermont Farms based on USDA regulations. “How can we get people to choose Organic?” was the marketing problem that I wanted to design for. The heart of this is a communication issue, and I argue in this thesis that organic should be the vehicle through which they promote their environmental goals and values. For NOFA-VT, I believe that this is where their interest lies. The organization’s values that drive belief in organic should drive the messaging. Organic ends up not necessarily being the goal, but a means to an end, and that end is helping to instill environmental care among their consumers and hopefully the desire to live more sustainably based on those values

Abstract (sommario):
Artists have often used artworks to express emotions and thus prompt public dialogue about contemporary challenges. At the same time, it has been suggested that collaborative art-making can be used in environmental deliberation processes, where stakeholder groups discuss contentious challenges such as the effects of flooding. Policy actors have rarely been deeply involved in these processes. Our recent research showed that collaborative art could be used to develop relationships between groups, including policy actors, in deliberation processes, by creating artworks to bring concerns into the public domain.

Abstract (sommario):
Construction work zones for roads pose significant safety challenges for drivers and workers, which can lead to accidents, injuries, fatalities, and property damage. Enhancing construction work-zone safety requires an understanding of the factors influencing accidents and fatalities and an evaluation of existing safety and traffic-management measures. The objective of this study was to improve work-zone safety for roadways, by connecting passive material sensing in the road with vehicle communication systems. A review of the main roadway work-zone safety literature found driver behavior, traffic congestion, and signage effectiveness to be the most significant factors. Vehicle speed, type of vehicles, type of collisions, and environmental conditions were found to have the most impact on the fatality rate in work zones. Past attempts to improve work-zone safety include adding rumble strips, more warning signs, and implementing smart-work-zone (SWZ) technologies. SWZ communication in-vehicle was found to reduce traffic speeds and promote faster and more consistent merging in the work-zone transition area. Pavement-assisted passive sensing, coupled with vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) communication, may offer enhanced in-vehicle speed and lane-merge warnings, which could improve driver awareness, reduce vehicle speeds, and improve work-zone safety. A laboratory-based experiment was developed to validate the theoretical configurations of smart work zones (SWZ) using passive pavement sensing, with the objective being to determine suitable spacings and inclination angles for the electromagnetic (EM) strips as speed and lane-merge warning systems, respectively. The experimental results revealed that these EM strips can estimate vehicle speed with sufficient accuracy, and the spacing of the EM-sensing strips influences the signal intensity. Additionally, the spacing and inclination angle of the EM strips influence the captured signals. This lab pilot study clearly demonstrated the potential of EM-based strips in enhancing speed and lane-merge warning systems using V2I technology for improved safety in roadway work zones.
