Abstract (sommario):
The global economic system, as well as the planetary civilization, as a whole are experiencing an era of “great changes”. The transition is overdue from an economy based on the paradigm of “economic man” – calculating, selfish, competitive, striving to maximize profits – to a regenerative one, based on solidarity and cooperation, built into natural cycles and focused on the welfare of the majority. The solidary economy (SE), which is replacing the existing one, is at the same time a transition to a future regenerative economic system. Its positioning is due to the fact that its institutional design consists of forms of organization integrated into the late modern, but whose potential in terms of prospects for social development goes beyond its limits, crossing the border separating modernity from postmodernity. SE can be understood as an ecosystem of practices that already exist – some old, some new, some still emerging. International organizations consider the solidary economy to be the key to implementing the paradigm shift envisaged by the UN Agenda for the period up to 2030 and achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The key understanding of the SE as a system produced by the evolution of the modern economic system, which does not presuppose its revolutionary replacement with forms that constitute an alternative to existing institutions, the authors drew to its description the cooperation that best meets the needs of the transition to a new quality of socio-economic organization.

Abstract (sommario):
This paper provides an analysis of the practical implications of the concept of solidarity economy and the elements of public policies that affect the solidarity economy in Croatia. In a broader sense, solidarity is a common component of economic behaviour. In a narrower sense, solidarity refers to a set of economic practices that meet the criteria of balancing economic, social and environmental sustainability, joint ownership and participatory governance. Solidarity economy supports the construction and maintenance of common economic goods, which may occur within legal entities, as well as in contractual relations or informal cooperation. Solidarity economy is close to the concept of social economy, and significantly different from collaborative (sharing) economy. Public policies that encourage solidarity-based economic practices have their origins in the welfare state regime and the level of solidarity in society, which is followed by ideologies, strategies and activities of political and economic actors. The social contributions of the solidarity economy and the risks to which it is exposed justify state intervention in this area, which can be reflected in regulation and institutional, financial and tax support to its actors and processes. Public policies in Croatia generally do not recognise the importance of the social and solidarity economy and its actors, such as cooperatives and social enterprises. Although the recognition of possible contributions of the social and solidarity economy to society and the economy in Croatia is growing, the incentive framework is incomplete and insufficient, which is reflected in the results and future prospects of this sector. Key words: solidarity, solidarity economy, public policy, cooperatives, social enterprises.

Abstract (sommario):
The coalition cabinet in which Solidarity played a leading role, but which also included Communists and their allies, won Parliamentary approval on September 12, 1989. This coalition inherited from the Communists an economy in deep crisis: inflation was raging, shortages of virtually all goods were rampant, and the black market was all-pervasive. The new government pledged to restore the market economy. This paper discusses the economy under Solidarity rule, focusing on stabilization and the restoration of private enterprise.

Abstract (sommario):
Solidarity economy theory has challenged the ideology and agenda of neoliberalism since the 1980s. However, are the two theories always opposed? For example, microcredit is often assessed positively as a practice of solidarity economy because it targets beneficiaries who are generally excluded or marginalised from a traditional financial infrastructure and enhances solidarity and reciprocity between people. However, other researchers have criticised it as an instrument for promoting and sustaining neoliberal politico-economic restructuring. This paper examines whether microcredit is part of solidarity economy or neoliberalism, using concrete examples of microcredit operations in rural Bangladesh. The following two questions will be addressed, as the tenets and effects of microcredit are judged, as supporting solidarity economy or neoliberalism. (i) Are microcredit services largely provided to economically or/and socially disadvantaged people? (ii) What relationships are built in local society, including microfinance institutions, through microcredit? This paper addresses these questions in field-based micro-level case studies and field data. In this examination, the paper will demonstrate and discuss articulation of the solidarity economy and neoliberalism, as well as how the effects of microcredit can be enhanced as a part of the solidarity economy instead of being an item on the neoliberal agenda.

Abstract (sommario):
This article presents this trajectory, starting from the work of Milton Santos on the circuits in the urban economics in the underdeveloped countries and their relation to the popular economy. We also discuss the solidarity economy, which originated within the framework of European associativism, and in Brazil assumes peculiar contours when focusing on self-managed collective production. Finally, we discuss how the current Latin American debate articulates the questioning of the market society and the proposition of an “other economy” focused on work and on the plurality of economic principles. In this sense, “social and solidarity economy” would be, in peripheral and in central countries, a set of initiatives oriented to an ideal economic system, to replace the “economy of capital”.

Abstract (sommario):
In recent years, Côte d’Ivoire has seen the emergence of a discourse aimed at raising awareness of entrepreneurship among young people, driven by public policies and disseminated in various ways. This research analyzes, over a four-year period, the implementation of a social and solidarity entrepreneurship education project at an Ivorian university and its effects on participating students. Conducted through an ethnographic approach that centers on the voices of the participants and analyzes their biographical journeys, the thesis highlights the innovative aspects as well as some shortcomings of the project, which prevented its sustainability. It uncovers the misunderstandings that hindered the project's completion, though these could be mitigated with revised roles and institutional reinforcement. Regarding the students, the characterization of their identity transitions throughout the project reveals family and social socializations conducive to entrepreneurial initiative, alongside individual and collective factors stemming from the group dynamics created for the project. At the project's conclusion, the effects on their future trajectories vary in magnitude, ranging from a mere awareness-raising impact to forms of entrepreneurial expertise. These findings, drawn from individual experiences, provide broader insights into the Ivorian social and educational context: our analysis suggests that the practice of social and solidarity entrepreneurship is rooted in sociocultural knowledge that deserves to be unearthed, recognized, and valued for the development of sustainable and adapted educational frameworks. The thesis offers pathways towards educational engineering in entrepreneurship that supports the valorization of both individual and collective pre-existing knowledge

Abstract (sommario):

âEconomia solidÃriaâ is sought of social reform into numerous scope of human action and it has remarkable grew up in recent years because its different configurations. My main question is make a research about âRede Bodegasâ namely âRede de Economia Popular SolidÃriaâ placed in the State of CearÃ. âRede Bodegasâ that is an instance of and refers to Caritas which has some projects concern Alternative Community Projects (so called PACs). Hence, we search for an answer to the questions: how they become entirely independent any way and farther how they construct the underlying source of âEconomia SolidÃriaâ. The methodology adopted is like an empiric one or only âa caseâ through we concern with âRede Bodegasâ activities. Informations at issue were grasped through a questionnaire which comprises lessons about production, betterment, trading and distribution of economic outcome. Data that were researched provides a framework (schema) supported by CÃritas Diocesana de Fortaleza accord to the principles of âEconomia solidÃriaâ. This project has a clearly concern: bringing up gain for its agents such improvement income and environmental rectitude possessing, mutual cooperation and solidarity feeling. Hence, Caritas played a role especially with a logistic one: qualifying people, methodological, supervising, etc. According data interpretation itâs possible to construct a virtuous circle to Rede Bodegas that can be financial supported by Caritas. The result can be enjoyed by everyone who is comprised with the project in order to bring at all into account the dignity of people. For example, along with 8 diocese distributed all over the state (2006), there was minimal results, but those were at least important to advance the project tout court on a continuum. Then, âEconomia Popular SolidÃriaâ sets up a prominent future (the project can be settled by Caritas) and it gets farther.

Abstract (sommario):
The current period is seeing a growing proportion of "activist" workers who have expressly chosen their occupation in response to the need to defend collective interests and provide solutions to social and environmental problems. They hope to find in the so-called "hybrid organizations" combining market activity and social mission a framework for aligning their values and their profession. However, the divergent logics at work in these organizations tend to subject them to significant tensions, amplified or attenuated by the organizational context. We explore the responses to these tensions and the organizational practices that can support these workers. We identify how the individual gives meaning to persistent contradictions through storytelling. We demonstrate the organizational support made possible by the provision of CSR standards. We test the impact of personal social engagement on satisfaction with CSR and the intention to "blow the whistle" in case of perceived ethical drift, compared to other antecedents

Abstract (sommario):
The new model of capitalist accumulation, the "flexible accumulation", based on profit maximization to the detriment of labor rights, has been increasing precarious work, global scale unemployment related to social exclusion, and poverty in peripheral economies, like Brazil. However, forms of resistance arose from people seeking to generate employment and income. One of these forms is solidarity economy (SE). Solidarity economy restores a culture where worker cooperatives (guided by union, solidarity and reciprocity) generate income and development and contribute to repair the social tissue of spaces where cooperative work has been reassigned. This dissertation examines an example of SE initiative organized in a solidarity collaboration network: the Justa Trama Network - a supply chain of ecological cotton where small farmers, seed collectors, spinners, weavers, and seamstresses are involved. This chain is quite spatially significant. It begins in Tauá, in Northeast Brazil, where agroecological cotton is planted. The cotton thread is then developed in Pará de Minas, in the Southeast, at the Textile Production Cooperative (Coopertêxtil). Subsequently, they are joined by the Fio Nobre Cooperative, in Itajaí, and the Unidas Venceremos Cooperative, in Porto Alegre, both in Southern Brazil, where products of the Justa Trama brand are made. Clothes are embellished with seeds and dyes supplied by the Açaí Cooperative, from Porto Velho, in Northern Brazil. By analyzing meaning units within the speech of entrepreneurs involved in the Justa Trama Network, this dissertation aims to identify the forming elements of new territorialities/identities (space reassignment), based on reciprocity (among entrepreneurs) and solidarity (shared relations among people in the Network), values which are part of solidarity cooperativism. The chosen field research method was non-directive interviews and (focused) conversations, which were recorded and transcribed later. This method was considered the most adequate proceeding for a research focusing on the representation of individuals and the means by which they reassign spatial and economic interaction, as well as their sense of belonging to the Network. However, for the Justa Trama Network to succeed, other initiatives must also succeed, to which the ecological cotton supply chain is a reference. By dominating a field that favors the beginning of new articulations leading to the birth of new nets and local production arrangements, subjects of the Network are asserting their role as protagonists. Furthermore, they prove that Justa Trama's territory is a field that is open to the study of Geography.

Abstract (sommario):
This thesis provides a case for the alternative approach to economic and human development through the solidarity economy. Neoliberal growth strategies, including the Washington Consensus, are consistently supported by leading international development organizations yet continue to create marginalized communities throughout the world. Solidarity economies, similar to the one in Conjunto Palmerias, Brazil, move beyond this neoliberal approach to find alternative economic measures that expand the capabilities of the entire community. This type of economy embraces a vision of a market that pragmatically responds to the economic and social challenges of globalization. In conclusion, this thesis argues that the global expansion of the solidarity economy movement affirms confidence that an alternative approach to both human and economic development is possible in today’s capitalistic world.

Abstract (sommario):
This article presents the connections between social innovation, social entrepreneurship, and social technology. There is a gap in the Brazilian literature on the connections between these terms and their relationship with the solidarity economy in the country. The research question is: what are the possible connections between these terms that are capable of strengthening the attributes of the solidarity economy? The objectives of the research are: 1) to propose a connection framework between the three terms and relate the result of these connections to the attributes of the solidarity economy; 2) to create a framework that represents the possible connections between the four terms investigated in this research. The authors who were part of the theoretical framework for this research were: Maciel (2019), Duque, Valadão (2017), Dagnino (2012), Moulaert et al. (2013), Godin (2012), Oliveira (2004), Melo Neto & Froes (2002), and França Filho (2001; 2006). The methodology comprises qualitative, bibliographic, and exploratory research. The results of the research in relation to the theoretical contribution refer to the reduction of the gap presented in the Brazilian literature by bringing together the themes of innovation, technology, entrepreneurship and solidarity economy in Brazil. The practical implications are: 1) using the connection framework to adapt policies and programs in a more integrated way, 2) subsidizing methodologies for the development of innovative solidarity economy enterprises and 3) enhancing entrepreneurial skills from the perspective of the solidarity economy.

Costantini, Anastasia, e Alessia Sebillo. Gender Equality and Women Empowerment in Social Economy Enterprises. Liège: CIRIEC, 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.25518/ciriec.wp202202.

Abstract (sommario):
Women remain underrepresented in the labour market. In the EU, they earn 14,1% less than men, and they still experience barriers to access and remain at the labour market (Eurostat, 2021a). Currently, the COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated the gender dimension of social and economic inequalities, producing a severe gender impact and the risk of economic marginalisation of women. Why do we expect the social and solidarity economy to improve gender equality at work? Therefore, the paper will discuss the potential and limits of the SEEs in promoting gender equality and women's empowerment. The analysis has referenced existing literature and available information on the sector, including interviews with experts and illustrative cases within Diesis Network, one of the broadest European networks supporting the social economy and social enterprise development. The aim is to show impactful solutions of SEEs and bring social and solidarity economy closer to the gender perspective to increase their impact in supporting inclusive and sustainable growth.

Abstract (sommario):
Through the past decade, United Nations (UN) agencies have developed various initiatives in favor of the promotion of the Social and Solidarity Economy (SSE): the creation of the UNTFSSE in 2013, the adoption of a resolution in the International Labor Conference in June 2022, the annual ILO Academy on SSE, etc. The SSE transnational networks, which are still trying to legitimate the SSE at the international level, often quote these activities as strong institutional support to the SSE. However, this emphasis raises questions about the actual place of SSE concerns in the UN system. The hypothesis here is that, despite the big announcements, SSE (and the few agents who promote it) occupy(s) a fringe position within the UN agencies. Based on a set of semi-directive interviews with UN agents, this paper provides an opportunity to understand why, despite the absence of a general guideline, SSE has made its way into the agenda of several UN agencies. The analysis assumes that, before being an institutional interest, this appetence for SSE is the result of the commitment of several UN staff. The underlying objective is also to understand whether the emergence of SSE within the UN agencies has produced 'innovations' and 'changes' in the institutions. All this research work is facilitated by the author’s position as a Ph.D. student with a CIFRE agreement. This is a French specificity that enables her, in parallel to her research activities, to be a mission officer for SSE International Forum, one of the major networks of SSE actors on an international scale. This position, therefore, facilitates her access to the field and to the agents interviewed, whom she meets regularly in the context of her employed activities. In addition to the interviews conducted, this paper is therefore based on participant observation and analysis of archive documents.

Abstract (sommario):
On 24 August 2023, during a summit in Johannesburg, South Africa, BRICS announced the admission of six new members. The BRICS summit came at a time when countries all over the world are trying to deal with a changing geopolitical landscape that challenges the dominance of the West. Seeking more political and economic influence in a global system, Iran, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Argentina, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), and Ethiopia will join the current five members of BRICS as new members on 1 January 2024. Founded on the bonds of friendship, solidarity, and shared interests, the partnership has three pillars: (i) political and security cooperation, (ii) financial and economic cooperation, and (iii) cultural and people-to-people cooperation.

Abstract (sommario):
Traditionally, comprehensive habitat upgrading programmes have focused on building basic service infrastructure, but have neglected key aspects such as income generation based on solidarity processes, which are typical of self-built popular neighbourhoods. This Policy Brief argues that community-based solid waste management based on Zero Waste strategies may become a significant livelihood opportunity in popular neighbourhoods and proposes a series of recommendations in this regard. It should be highlighted that Zero Waste is not only understood as a strategy to improve income but also as a means to reduce health and environmental impacts associated with inappropriate waste management. This approach also allows contributions aimed at promoting the transition towards circular economy models that contribute to strengthening the social fabric in neighbourhoods where solidarity and mutual support have been key to advancing individual and collective projects.

Abstract (sommario):
Since the “long summer of migration” in 2015, the reception of asylum seekers in France has increasingly depended on non-metropolitan areas, which have expanded their reception capacities. These areas, often considered ‘left-behind places’ with more fragile capacity for action, are playing an increasing role in the reception of asylum seekers. This paper explores how the territorial diversity in these areas leads to a variety of the local reception dynamics at the municipal level. Our analysis is based on both quantitative and qualitative methods, using an unprecedented database provided by the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes Regional Directorate for the Economy, Employment, Labour, and Solidarity in 2023, along with semi-structured interviews with local actors. The research reveals that, the reception of asylum seekers outside metropolitan areas is far from homogeneous, varying according to the specific characteristics of each municipality.

Abstract (sommario):
The Women’s Handicrafts Production Cooperative is a success story that has transformed the lives of its members, who had been finding it hard to obtain employment. They are now focused on creating their own enterprise. Started in 2018, today the cooperative’s membership has expanded tenfold and created employment opportunities by using the principles of social solidarity economy and collective business models. The Youth Participation and Employment (YPE) project in Egypt, developed in partnership with the Better Life Association for Community Development (BLACD), provided technical training to the cooperative in handicrafts production, as well as life skills training, to empower the workers to continue despite all the societal pressure for them to give up. Assistance from BLACD came in when it was needed. Particularly during the COVID-19 crisis, with the tourism market shut down, BLACD has provided crucial technical advice and support, supporting the cooperative to brainstorm and identify several parallel income-generating activities. This case study contains some testimonies from members of the cooperative on how their collective strength was harnessed to create employment and income.

Abstract (sommario):
This didactic unit is aimed at the fifth semester students of the Business Administration, Marketing and International Business program, who have already completed the four basic levels of the Open Lingua program. This proposal seeks to develop skills and competencies that allow them to perform in different fields related to private, public and solidarity economy companies, and in various mediation and negotiation processes at national and international levels. The instructional design of this unit contains real-life situations, focused on the world of business, that allow students to interact in various types of business events. The grammatical and lexical concepts, necessary to interact successfully in these types of communicative situations, are introduced and applied. The educational activities are designed to offer opportunities to interact in business conferences, international exhibitions, and seminars, among others. The contents are framed in natural and meaningful contexts. This leads to a greater understanding of the type of language used in business and the way it is used to communicate. The contents are structured in three lessons in which the level of complexity of the topics, tasks, texts and transitions (4Ts) have been considered. Also, various types of activities that activate and reinforce previous knowledge and that, subsequently, evaluate the progress of the students, are included.

Abstract (sommario):
The process of economic reform and trade liberalization in Latin America and the Caribbean, under way since the end of the 1980s, has brought about an increasing integration of the countries in the region into the world economy, both in terms of commercial and investment flows. At the same time, Latin American countries have been pursuing the process of deepening economic integration at the subregional level, negotiating trade liberalization at the regional and hemispheric level, as well as engaging in multilateral trade negotiations. Latin American countries are also negotiating cooperation and free trade agreements with other countries and regions of the world, both developing and industrial ones. These developments, as well the emergence of new powerful players on the international arena, such as China and India, represent opportunities but also enormous challenges for Latin America. In facing these challenges, the countries of Latin America and the Caribbean are open to ideas, experiences and good practices that may contribute to their successful integration into an increasingly open and competitive international economy. In this regard, the rich European experience in the process of regional integration over the last decades that has brought about not only mutual trade liberalization, but also the establishment of joint institutions, a common currency as well as political cooperation and a strong component of solidarity among member countries could be of benefit for the region. Moreover, Latin America is an important market for the European Union as it positions itself in global competition and seeks partners for economic as well as political cooperation. With this in mind, in 2002, the Inter-American Development Bank, through the Special Office in Europe and the Integration and Regional Programs Department, through the Institute for the Integration of Latin America and the Caribbean (INTAL), launched the Euro-Latin Study Network on Integration and Trade (ELSNIT). The Network operates with the collaboration of partner European centers, leaders in research in the area of integration and trade. ELSNIT represents a platform for an exchange of ideas between European and Latin American experts, and ultimately a source of support for policy makers on both sides of the Atlantic. This publication provides an account of the main findings of the second cycle of activities of the Network during 2004/2005.

Abstract (sommario):
Latin American and Caribbean countries are today at an important juncture in their international economic relations. Since the end of the 1980s the countries of the region have been pursuing a process of economic reform and opening that has brought about a radical change in their domestic economies and in their integration into the world economy. Besides having undertaken a unilateral liberalization of their trade and investment inflows, Latin American countries are in the process of deepening economic integration at the subregional level and negotiating trade liberalization agreements at the regional and hemispheric level. Furthermore, they are also negotiating cooperation and trade agreements with other countries and regions of the world ¿ both developing and industrial ones ¿ and are also engaged in the process of multilateral trade negotiations. These parallel processes on the integration and trade fronts represent enormous challenges for Latin America. And in facing them, the countries of the region are open to ideas, experiences and good practices that may contribute to their successfully meeting these challenges, and for capturing the opportunities that integration into an increasingly open and competitive international economy offers. In this regard, the rich European experience in the process of regional integration over the last decades that has brought about not only mutual trade liberalization, but also the establishment of joint institutions, a common currency as well as political cooperation and a strong component of solidarity among member countries could be of benefit for the region. Moreover, Latin America is an important market for the EU as it positions itself in global competition and seeks partners for global cooperation. With this in mind, the Inter-American Development Bank, through the Special Office in Europe and the Integration and Regional Programs Department, through the Institute for the Integration of Latin America and the Caribbean (INTAL), has launched the Euro-Latin Study Network on Integration and Trade (ELSNIT). Established jointly with our partners, leading European research centers in the area of integration and trade, the Network represents a platform for an exchange of ideas between European and Latin American experts, and ultimately a source of support for policy makers on both sides of the Atlantic. This publication represents a synthesis of the findings of the first cycle of activities of the Network during 2003/2004.
