Abstract (sommario):
A pivotal moment in machine learning research was the creation of an important new research area, known as Ensemble Learning. In this work, we argue that ensembles are a very general concept, and though they have been widely used, they can be applied in more situations than they have been to date. Rather than using them only to combine the output of an algorithm, we can apply them to decisions made inside the algorithm itself, during the learning step. We call this approach Inner Ensembles. The motivation to develop Inner Ensembles was the opportunity to produce models with the similar advantages as regular ensembles, accuracy and stability for example, plus additional advantages such as comprehensibility, simplicity, rapid classification and small memory footprint. The main contribution of this work is to demonstrate how broadly this idea can be applied, and highlight its potential impact on all types of algorithms. To support our claim, we first provide a general guideline for applying Inner Ensembles to different algorithms. Then, using this framework, we apply them to two categories of learning methods: supervised and un-supervised. For the former we chose Bayesian network, and for the latter K-Means clustering. Our results show that 1) the overall performance of Inner Ensembles is significantly better than the original methods, and 2) Inner Ensembles provide similar performance improvements as regular ensembles.

Abstract (sommario):
The essay Ensemble Piece contemplates the nature of how one observes, labours, and translates as active and passive movements, repeated, reconstructed. The text is a companion piece to the installations Silver Tea and Silver Tea Suite. The works discussed in this text make up the installation Silver Tea. A contemplation of forms that kaleidoscopically revolve around each other, whose imagery, methodologies and forms reflect and morph into one another, a looping, repetitious rhythm that is not, however, confined to a circuitous nature. Silver Tea rests in a space and timeframe between suggestion, intention, and intuition, where gestures and their traces have taken on a life of their own.   Silver Tea, a literal translation of the Swedish word silverte, is a misleading phrase. Silverte is, in its essence, simply a cup of hot water, therefore being neither silver, nor in fact, tea. But sometimes language can imbue in an object a sensation more magical than the sum of its parts. Later, thinking back on my early years in Sweden...

Paris, EHESS, 2016. http://www.theses.fr/2016EHES0121.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Based on an ethnographic approach, this dissertation work constitutes an inquiry into the upholding of collective meals within French nursing homes dedicated to the care of dependent elderly populations (Ehpad). Recommended by public health policies and the professional literature as a token of care and sociability, the communal meal is none the less a daily trial within establishments, which commands practical adjustments in order to match, to the extent possible, the social expectations it crystallizes. Because each day it requires residents to be gathered, concentrates community living, we examine it as a particular socializing arrangement for the dependent elderly population. Hence the two lines of analysis we have favored. Firstly, we intend to grasp the Ehpad communal meal as the result of a specific labor: a set of ways of doing and saying that affecl residents, the focal aims of which laying with incorporating food and maintaining social arrangements. Secondly, by analyzing professional embarrassment that this work involves, as well as matching forms ol oppositions on residents' part, we overcome the mere medicalization of behaviors. Inquiry materials comprise participant observation in three establishments as an intern within the restaurant services, together with an analysis of professional best practices written by the French higher health authority and the French national agency for the evaluation of social and medico-social services. Through a review of the biomedical literature, apprehending the gap between norms and practices is placed in a widen reference space, where undernourishment is being built in a scholarly fashion. At last, a historical perspective of the Ehpad meal, through considering late XlXth century hospice meals as well as resulting medical theories on great-age nutrition, brings out the evolutions of elderly's treatment through consumptions. Across this dissertation, we have inquired into the government of bodies, in its disposition to produce hopes as foi maintaining the material and symbolic life of individuals known to be vulnerable and to soon face death

Abstract (sommario):

Abstract (sommario):
Nowadays, there are not many tools that allow IOS developer community implement applications oriented to multi-display environments and, additionally, to fulfill what is described by Ensemble Interactions and the design patterns defined for these environments, which are concepts that propose the joint work of all available devices in the same environment. On the other hand, of the few tools that allow the development of such applications, some have been implemented by large companies that also develop mobile devices and limit their tools to work with only those devices from their own. Therefore, this paper seeks to implement a tool that allows IOS developer communitydevelop mobile applications for multiple devices environments that meet what is described by Ensemble Interactions and design patterns. This tool base the interaction between devices on a Wi-Fi network without access to the internet and Bluetooth. Then, in the first chapter the project and its management will be discussed. Then, the theoretical framework on which this work is based. The third chapter will analyze in detail the current status of all tools and technologies that allow the development of multi-display environments applications. Then, the fifth chapter will describe the methodology employed in the development of this project and the results obtained. In the sixth chapter, the final product of labor and management measures taken during its development will be presented. Finally, conclusions and recommendations proposed in this work are listed.

Alqurashi, Tahani. "Clustering ensemble method". Thesis, University of East Anglia, 2017. https://ueaeprints.uea.ac.uk/62679/.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Clustering is an unsupervised learning paradigm that partitions a given dataset into clusters so that objects in the same cluster are more similar to each other than to the objects in the other clusters. However, when clustering algorithms are used individually, their results are often inconsistent and unreliable. This research applies the philosophy of Ensemble learning that combines multiple partitions using a consensus function in order to address these issues to improve a clustering performance. A clustering ensemble framework is presented consisting of three phases: Ensemble Member Generation, Consensus and Evaluation. This research focuses on two points: the consensus function and ensemble diversity. For the first, we proposed three new consensus functions: the Object-Neighbourhood Clustering Ensemble (ONCE), the Dual-Similarity Clustering Ensemble (DSCE), and the Adaptive Clustering Ensemble (ACE). ONCE takes into account the neighbourhood relationship between object pairs in the similarity matrix, while DSCE and ACE are based on two similarity measures: cluster similarity and membership similarity. The proposed ensemble methods were tested on benchmark real-world and artificial datasets. The results demonstrated that ONCE outperforms the other similar methods, and is more consistent and reliable than k-means. Furthermore, DSCE and ACE were compared to the ONCE, CO, MCLA and DICLENS clustering ensemble methods. The results demonstrated that on average ACE outperforms the state-of-the-art clustering ensemble methods, which are CO, MCLA and DICLENS. On diversity, we experimentally investigated all the existing measures for determining their relationship with the ensemble quality. The results indicate that none of them are capable of discovering a clear relationship and the reasons for this are: (1) they all are inappropriately defined to measure the useful difference between the members, and (2) none of them have been used directly by any consensus function. Therefore, we point out that these two issues need to be addressed in future research.

Abstract (sommario):
Thesis (Ph. D.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Earth, Atmospheric, and Planetary Sciences, 2009.
Includes bibliographical references (p. 183-190).
Ensemble regression (ER) is a linear inversion technique that uses ensemble statistics from atmospheric model output to make dynamical inferences and forecasts. ER defines a multivariate regression operator using ensemble forecasts and analyses to determine the most probable predict and perturbation associated with the prescribed predictor perturbation resolved by linear combinations of the predictor ensemble anomalies. Because it employs flow-dependent ensemble data, as opposed to the stationary time series data typically used to make statistical forecasts, ER is capable of modeling synoptic scale processes with rapidly evolving covariances. This characteristic is applied in several ways. Firstly, it is shown that the classical dynamical piecewise potential vorticity (PV) inversion of the PV perturbation effectively resolved by the ER operator yields nearly identical geopotential heights to those deduced from an ER performed in the subspace of the leading PV singular vectors. Secondly, using the example of the lagged sensitivity of tropical cyclone tracks to preexisting midtropospheric heights, ER is used to infer dynamical relationships from statistical sensitivities, to identify, in real-time, the dynamical processes that are particularly relevant to specific forecast decisions, and to make preemptive forecasts. Thirdly, it is shown that singular vectors deduced from the ER operator approximate those from the analysis error covariance normed tangent linear model operator, suggesting a simple alternative method for computing singular vectors. Given that ER results are a function of forecast ensemble reliability, theory and applications of a multivariate ensemble reliability verification technique called the minimum spanning tree rank histogram are presented.
(cont.) Experiments using Euclidean, variance, and Mahalanobis norms for defining minimum spanning tree distances imply that, unless the number of ensemble members is less than or equal to the number of dimensions being verified, the Mahalanobis norm transforms a spanning tree into a space where model imperfections are most readily identified.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
This study examines the ways in which ensemble theatre making can contribute to citizenship education. A range of political theories construct the framework for democratic politics and active citizenship which, in turn, become the pedagogical basis for the ensemble model of theatre learning. Outstanding political theories, such as Castoriadis’ theory of the imaginary institution of society and Habermas’ model for communicative action, structure a theoretical basis which constitutes an ideal definition for democratic politics and active citizenship. This framework becomes the pedagogic ground of ensemble theatre that constitutes a collective process of theatre making and, therefore, aims to function as a democratic learning experience in the art of theatre. In this context, a research praxis that combines methodological elements from action research and case study is conducted in two high-schools of Athens and examines students’ perceptions of politics, while at the same time explores their responses to an artistic, learning experience that interacts with their own initiatives, group decisions, and socio-artistic actions. Following this methodological route that integrates both an interventionist and an interpretive interest, the fieldwork is developed as a dialogic action between the ideal conception of ensemble theatre making and the real conditions that are encountered in the educational contexts. In this context, the analysis and the interpretation of the data provides information about the ways in young people perceive arts and politics, the ways in which they experience and develop collectiveness and active participation as well as the ways in which these perceptions determine their citizenship skills. Finally, the impact of ensemble theatre process is examined in relation to the above mentioned perceptions and conditions of political socialisation.

Abstract (sommario):
Context. The problem of obtaining predictions from stream data involves training on the labeled instances and suggesting the class values for the unseen stream instances. The nature of the data-stream environments makes this task complicated. The large number of instances, the possibility of changes in the data distribution, presence of noise and drifting concepts are just some of the factors that add complexity to the problem. Various supervised-learning algorithms have been designed by putting together efficient data-sampling, ensemble-learning, and incremental-learning methods. The performance of the algorithm is dependent on the chosen methods. This leaves an opportunity to design new supervised-learning algorithms by using different combinations of constructing methods. Objectives. This thesis work proposes a fast and accurate supervised-learning algorithm for performing predictions on the data-streams. This algorithm is called as Boosted-Window Ensemble (BWE), which is invented using the mixture-of-experts technique. BWE uses Sliding Window, Online Boosting and incremental-learning for data-sampling, ensemble-learning, and maintaining a consistent state with the current stream data, respectively. In this regard, a sliding window method is introduced. This method uses partial-updates for sliding the window on the data-stream and is called Partially-Updating Sliding Window (PUSW). The investigation is carried out to compare two variants of sliding window and three different ensemble-learning methods for choosing the superior methods. Methods. The thesis uses experimentation approach for evaluating the Boosted-Window Ensemble (BWE). CPU-time and the Prediction accuracy are used as performance indicators, where CPU-time is the execution time in seconds. The benchmark algorithms include: Accuracy-Updated Ensemble1 (AUE1), Accuracy-Updated Ensemble2 (AUE2), and Accuracy-Weighted Ensemble (AWE). The experiments use nine synthetic and five real-world datasets for generating performance estimates. The Asymptotic Friedman test and the Wilcoxon Signed-Rank test are used for hypothesis testing. The Wilcoxon-Nemenyi-McDonald-Thompson test is used for performing post-hoc analysis. Results. The hypothesis testing suggests that: 1) both for the synthetic and real-wrold datasets, the Boosted Window Ensemble (BWE) has significantly lower CPU-time values than two benchmark algorithms (Accuracy-updated Ensemble1 (AUE1) and Accuracy-weighted Ensemble (AWE). 2) BWE returns similar prediction accuracy as AUE1 and AWE for synthetic datasets. 3) BWE returns similar prediction accuracy as the three benchmark algorithms for the real-world datasets. Conclusions. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm can be as accurate as the state-of-the-art benchmark algorithms, while obtaining predictions from the stream data. The results further show that the use of Partially-Updating Sliding Window has resulted in lower CPU-time for BWE as compared with the chunk-based sliding window method used in AUE1, AUE2, and AWE.

This project objective is the implementation and definition of a SDK (Software Development Hit) that can be used to develop universal application by integrating the features described by Ensemble Interactions guidelines. In addition, we want to achieve the implementation of 6 design patterns defined by the German Precious Design studio, with respect to his research in the ecosystem field composed of multiple screens. Therefore, this research will provide a theoretical framework about the concepts of Ensemble Interactions and the 6 patterns that defines it. The results of the investigation, about the issued associated with Ensemble Interactions, will be the starting point and the base that will support the artifacts that will be made throughout the project. On the other hand, to show the results of the investigation, three demos will be developed that will be useful for the implementation and definition of the SDK. Finally, two applications will be developed using the SDK, which comply with all guidelines and patterns of Ensemble Interactions and it will be targeted to the business and home range respectively. For the project development we have defined different processes, which first is the research and definition of the project. Also, the development of the three demos covering Ensemble Interactions patterns. Then the definition, implementation and validation of the three demos. Moreover, the development of the two applications orientated to the business and home range respectively. Finally, the development of a web portal web the SDK is stored and everything about the project is documented. The project scope has been defined and contemplated to be accomplished over two academic terms.

Abstract (sommario):
Dialectics is a musical composition for 32-instrument wind ensemble. The materials and models used in the piece are based entirely on the harmonic series and on naturally-occurring acoustical phenomena that are stretched out in time, and that undergo a variety of transformational processes. A dialectic is created between two musical principles, each based in a different manner on the concept of reverberation.

Abstract (sommario):
Distributed estimation in a wireless sensor network has many advantages. It eliminates the need of the centralized knowledge of the measurement model parameters and does not have a single point of failure. Also, any sensor node can be queried to retrieve the state estimate. Furthermore, for high dimensional measurements, local processing of information also results in a significant reduction in the communication overhead. The existing distributed Kalman filtering schemes have good computational and communication efficiency, but do not work well for non-linear and non-Gaussian problems. On the other hand, the distributed particle filtering schemes handle the non-linearities well, but have a much higher computational and communication cost. In this thesis, we propose novel distributed filtering schemes based on the ensemble Kalman filter (EnKF). We consider three forms of the EnKF and express their update equations in an alternative information form. This allows us to use the randomized gossip algorithm to reach consensus on the sufficient statistics and perform local updates. The simulation results show that all three forms of the EnKF have a considerably lower computational cost compared to the particle filters. The results suggest that the proposed distributed schemes outperform the existing state-of-the-art distributed filtering schemes in two scenarios, a) linear measurement model with non-linear state dynamics, and b) high dimensional measurements (model parameters known everywhere in the network) with non-linear measurement model and state dynamics. In both of these scenarios, the proposed schemes achieve an estimation accuracy comparable to the existing state-of-the-art schemes while significantly reducing the communication cost.

Maule, John. "Ensemble perception of hue". Thesis, University of Sussex, 2016. http://sro.sussex.ac.uk/id/eprint/61471/.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
In order to rapidly get the gist of new scenes or recognise objects, the brain must have mechanisms to process the large amount of visual information which enters the eye. Previous research has shown that observers tend to extract the average feature from briefly seen sets of multiple stimuli that vary along a dimension (e.g., size), a phenomenon called ensemble perception. This thesis investigates ensemble perception of hue. Paper 1 (Maule, Witzel & Franklin, 2014) demonstrates that human observers have memories biased towards the mean hue of a rapidly-presented ensemble of colours. Paper 2 (Maule & Franklin, 2015) further shows that observers are able to identify the mean hue from a distractor fairly reliably, provided the range of hues is manageable. Paper 3 provides evidence that, while observers' settings of the mean hue converge quite closely on the true mean across many trials, the precision of those settings is low and does not support claims that ensemble perception can surpass the limits of visual working memory. Paper 4 found that adults with autism have an enhanced ability to discriminate members from non-members of multi-hue ensembles, and a similar ability to extract the mean hue compared to typical adults, but are worse at averaging small sets. Finally, paper 5 investigated colour afterimages in adults with autism and whether they are affected by top-down gist of a scene. It was found that afterimages were no different in autism compared to a typical group. Overall these studies provide the first comprehensive exploration of ensemble perception of hue, showing that observers can extract and estimate the mean hue of a rapidly-presented multi-colour ensemble with a small hue variance. The ability to average hue may be driven by a sub-sampling mechanism, but results from autistic adults suggests that it can be modulated by processing style.

Gregory, Alastair. "Multilevel ensemble data assimilation". Thesis, Imperial College London, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/10044/1/60645.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
This thesis aims to investigate and improve the efficiency of ensemble transform methods for data assimilation, using an application of multilevel Monte Carlo. Multilevel Monte Carlo is an interesting framework to estimate statistics of discretized random variables, since it uses a hierarchy of discretizations with a refinement in resolution. This is in contrast to standard Monte Carlo estimators that only use a discretization at a fine resolution. A linear combination of sub-estimators, on different levels of this hierarchy, can provide new statistical estimators to random variables at the finest level of resolution with significantly greater efficiency than a standard Monte Carlo equivalent. Therefore, the extension to computing filtering estimators for data assimilation is a natural, but challenging area of study. These challenges arise due to the fact that correlation must be imparted between ensembles on adjacent levels of resolution and maintained during the assimilation of data. The methodology proposed in this thesis, considers coupling algorithms to establish this correlation. This generates multilevel estimators that significantly reduce the computational expense of propagating ensembles of discretizations through time and space, in between stages of data assimilation. An effective benchmark of this methodology is realised by filtering data into high-dimensional spatio-temporal systems, where a high computational complexity is required to solve the underlying partial differential equations. A novel extension of an ensemble transform localisation framework to finite element approximations within random spatio-temporal systems is proposed, in addition to a multilevel equivalent.

Abstract (sommario):
Document incorrectly classified as a dissertation on title page (decision to classify as a thesis from NDSU Graduate School)
In the research of health science, scientists often need to screen numerous chemical compounds to find drugs that can treat a disease. The process of testing the functionality of these compounds in the laboratory is very time-consuming. Computational methods have been used to accelerate this process. These computational methods are implemented based on the principle that chemical compounds with similar structure often have similar function. Thus, these methods maintain a database of chemical compounds whose function has been verified using laboratory experiments. The database contains the chemical structural formula of a compound, the 3D coordinate of every atom, and whether it has a certain function, e.g. it can kill a virus. Then, for a new compound, the programs compare its structure with those in the database and predict if it has the function based on the structure similarity. Thus, predicting the function of a compound is a two-class classification problem. In this project, we try to address this two-class classification problem using global and local similarity between compounds. The global similarity measures the overall structural resemblance between two compounds. When a group of compounds have the same function, they usually share some common sub-structures. These common sub-structures may correspond to their functional sites. Local similarity is computed based on the occurrences of common sub-structures between compounds. We built several classification models based on global and local similarity. To improve the classification result, we used an ensemble of those models to predict the function compounds in NCI cancer data sets. We predict whether a compound can inhibit cancer cell growth or not, obtaining AUC higher than 80% for five datasets. We compare our results with other state-of-the-art methods. Our classification result is the best in all five datasets. Our results show that local similarity is more useful than global similarity in predicting compound function. An ensemble method integrating global and local similarity achieves much better performance than single predicting models.

Abstract (sommario):

Abstract (sommario):
Machine learning has been a subject undergoing intense study across many different industries and academic research areas. Companies and researchers have taken full advantages of various machine learning approaches to solve their problems; however, vast understanding and study of the field is required for developers to fully harvest the potential of different machine learning models and to achieve efficient results. Therefore, this thesis begins by comparing auto ml with other hyper-parameter optimization techniques. auto ml is a fully autonomous framework that lessens the knowledge prerequisite to accomplish complicated machine learning tasks. The auto ml framework automatically selects the best features from a given data set and chooses the best model to fit and predict the data. Through multiple tests, auto ml outperforms MLP and other similar frameworks in various datasets using small amount of processing time. The thesis then proposes and implements a stacking ensemble technique in order to build protection against over-fitting for small datasets into the auto ml framework. Stacking is a technique used to combine a collection of Machine Learning models’ predictions to arrive at a final prediction. The stacked auto ml ensemble results are more stable and consistent than the original framework; across different training sizes of all analyzed small datasets.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
The main goal of the presented work is to tackle the problem of accuracy and waiting time in weather forecasting, which are normally conducted by computational applications known as Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP) models. These models have been strongly developed in the last decades and their performance constantly increases with the advances in computational power. However, in practice, many serious are still gaining considerable efforts by the scientific community in order to reduce what is widely known as 'weather limited predictability'. Mainly, the major two challenges are the willingness to get more reliable weather predictions, and to do it faster. As in many other areas of environmental modeling, most simulation software works with well-founded and widely accepted models. Hence, the need for input parameter optimization to improve model output is a long¬known and often-tackled problem. Particularly, in such environments where correct and timely input parameters cannot be provided. Efficient computational parameter estimation and optimization strategies are required to minimize the deviation between the predicted scenario and the real phenomenon behaviour. Based on the before mentioned, this thesis intends to: 1. Provide a sensitivity study of the effect of NWP model input parameters on prediction quality. 2. Propose a valid framework, which allows to search for the most 'optimal' values of model input parameters which, in our hypothesis, will provide better prediction quality. 3. Reduce the waiting time needed to get more reliable weather predictions. To accomplish the objectives of the presented proposal, a new weather prediction scheme is introduced. This new scheme implements an evolutionary computing algorithm, which focuses on the calibration of input parameters in NWP models. The presented scheme is called Genetic Ensemble, which is composed of two-phases: calibration phase and prediction phase. Through the calibration phase, the presented approach applies Genetic Algorithm operators iteratively, in order to find 'best' values of NWP model input parameters, which consequently, will be used in the consequent prediction phase. Many strategies of the Genetic Ensemble have been developed, as such, it s extended to calibrate more than one level of input parameters, and also to evaluate their values using different strategies. On the other hand, the proposed scheme is paralleled using a Master/Worker programming paradigm, and is suitable to be executed in high performance computing (HPC) platforms, by which, execution time is intended to be reduced. The presented scheme has been evaluated by running weather prediction experiments over a well-known weather catastrophe; Hurricane Katrina 2005. Obtained results showed both significant improvement in weather prediction quality, and a considerable reduction in the over all execution time.

Abstract (sommario):
Approved for public release; distribution is unlimited.
The skill of a combined grand ensemble (GE), which is constructed from three operational global ensemble prediction systems (EPS), is evaluated with respect to the probability forecast of a tropical cyclone (TC) being within a specified area. Anisotropic probability ellipses are defined from the GE to contain 68% of the ensemble members. Forecast reliability is based on whether the forecast verifying position is within the ellipse. A sharpness parameter is based on the size of the GE-based probability ellipse relative to other operational forecast probability ellipses. For the 2010 Atlantic TC season, results indicate that the GE ellipses exhibit a high degree of reliability whereas the operational probability circle tends to be over-dispersive. Additionally, the GE ellipse tends to be sharper than the operational product for forecast intervals beyond 48 hours. The size and shape of the GE ellipses varied with TC track types, which suggests that information about the physics of the flow-dependent system is retained whereas isotropic probability ellipses may not reflect variability associated with track type. It is concluded that the GE probability ellipse demonstrates utility for combined EPS to enhance probabilistic forecasts for use as TC-related decision aids, as there is a potential for reducing the sizes of warning areas.

Abstract (sommario):
Tree ensembles have proven to be a popular and powerful tool for predictive modeling tasks. The theory behind several of these methods (e.g. boosting) has received considerable attention. However, other tree ensemble techniques (e.g. bagging, random forests) have attracted limited theoretical treatment. Specifically, it has remained somewhat unclear as to why the simple act of randomizing the tree growing algorithm should lead to such dramatic improvements in performance. It has been suggested that a specific type of tree ensemble acts by forming a locally adaptive distance metric [Lin and Jeon, 2006]. We generalize this claim to include all tree ensembles methods and argue that this insight can help to explain the exceptional performance of tree ensemble methods. Finally, we illustrate the use of tree ensemble methods for an ecological niche modeling example involving the presence of malaria vectors in Africa.

Bohrer, Joceli Cirilo Soares. "Intonational strategies in ensemble singing". Thesis, City University London, 2002. http://openaccess.city.ac.uk/7645/.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
The aim of the research was to find out about intonational strategies in the performance situation. The singing voice was chosen as the appropriate subject for experimental work, due to its superior capability to define pitch as compared to other musical instruments. Ensemble singing was also required, as harmonic context may be important in the clarification of the issue, Chapter One, as an introduction to the subject, considers tuning systems and temperaments and briefly reviews the experimental literature on the subject. It also states the aim of the research. Chapter Two focuses on the theoretical aspects of the research, considering sonic relevant phenomena of psychoacoustics to the legacy of tuning systems and temperaments. Some thoughts on intonational strategies, reference frequencies and flexible temperament as desirable components of a sound intonational strategy are elaborated. An analysis of the motet Ave Veruin Corpus, by Mozart, as the chosen music piece for experimental work is carried out. Chapter 11ree deals with the delineation of experimental procedures for the evaluation of the intonational strategies adopted by singers in the performance situation. The recording sessions environment and the technical tools utilised in the experiments are described, as well as the technical procedures to carry out the measurements of the acquired data. As strict criteria had to be met regarding the performance situation, simultaneity of performance and the need to acquire individual data for analytical work, electrodes were attached to the neck of the singers, near the larynx, in order to carry out the recording sessions with the help of I-uyngogr2ph devices. Analytical issues arc also considered in the chapter, namely technical problems, errors and mistakes, as well as the implementation of intonational analyses and reference frequency calculations. Chapter Four presents a discussion on data measurements procedures, including guidelines for the determination of errors and mistakes and their symbology. Four recording sessions were carded out; two of them fulfilled 211th e necessary requirements. The singers' results are presented in chronological order. firstly, a quartet of singers from the Royal Academy of Music, and secondly, sixteen of the BBC Singers. Reference frequency results are also presented and discussed. Chapter Five deals with the intonational strategies as defined by the experimental work. Abstract (sommario):
We describe an ensemble approach to learning salient spatial regions from arbitrarily partitioned simulation data. Ensemble approaches for anomaly detection are also explored. The partitioning comes from the distributed processing requirements of large-scale simulations. The volume of the data is such that classifiers can train only on data local to a given partition. Since the data partition reflects the needs of the simulation, the class statistics can vary from partition to partition. Some classes will likely be missing from some or even most partitions. We combine a fast ensemble learning algorithm with scaled probabilistic majority voting in order to learn an accurate classifier from such data. Since some simulations are difficult to model without a considerable number of false positive errors, and since we are essentially building a search engine for simulation data, we order predicted regions to increase the likelihood that most of the top-ranked predictions are correct (salient). Results from simulation runs of a canister being torn and from a casing being dropped show that regions of interest are successfully identified in spite of the class imbalance in the individual training sets. Lift curve analysis shows that the use of data driven ordering methods provides a statistically significant improvement over the use of the default, natural time step ordering. Significant time is saved for the end user by allowing an improved focus on areas of interest without the need to conventionally search all of the data. We have also found that using random forests weighted and distance-based outlier ensemble methods for supervised learning of anomaly detection provide significant accuracy improvements when compared to existing methods on the same dataset. Further, distance-based outlier and local outlier factor ensemble methods for unsupervised learning of anomaly detection also compare favorably to existing methods.

Abstract (sommario):
Traditional clustering algorithms have different criteria and biases, and there is no single algorithm that can be the best solution for a wide range of data sets. This problem often presents a significant obstacle to analysts in revealing meaningful information buried among the huge amount of data. Ensemble Clustering has been proposed as a way to avoid the biases and improve the accuracy of clustering. The difficulty in developing Ensemble Clustering methods is to combine external information (provided by input clusterings) with internal information (i.e. characteristics of given data) effectively to improve the accuracy of clustering. The work presented in this thesis focuses on enhancing the clustering accuracy of Ensemble Clustering by employing heuristic optimisation techniques to achieve a robust combination of relevant information during the consensus clustering stage. Two novel heuristic optimisation-based Ensemble Clustering methods, Multi-Optimisation Consensus Clustering (MOCC) and K-Ants Consensus Clustering (KACC), are developed and introduced in this thesis. These methods utilise two heuristic optimisation algorithms (Simulated Annealing and Ant Colony Optimisation) for their Ensemble Clustering frameworks, and have been proved to outperform other methods in the area. The extensive experimental results, together with a detailed analysis, will be presented in this thesis.

Abstract (sommario):
The aim of the research was to find out about intonational strategies in the performance situation. The singing voice was chosen as the appropriate subject for experimental work, due to its superior capability to define pitch as compared to other musical instruments. Ensemble singing was also required, as harmonic context may be important in the clarification of the issue. Chapter One, as an introduction to the subject, considers tuning systems and temperaments and briefly reviews the experimental literature on the subject. It also states the aim of the research. Chapter Two focuses on the theoretical aspects of the research, considering some relevant phenomena of psychoacoustics to the legacy of tuning systems and temperaments. Some thoughts on intonational strategies, reference frequencies and flexible temperament as desirable components of a sound intonational strategy are elaborated. An analysis of the motet Ave Verum Corpus, by Mozart, as the chosen music piece for experimental work is carried out. Chapter Three deals with the delineation of experimental procedures for the evaluation of the intonational strategies adopted by singers in the performance situation. The recording sessions environment and the technical tools utilised in the experiments are described, as well as the technical procedures to carry out the measurements of the acquired data. As strict criteria had to be met regarding the performance situation, simultaneity of performance and the need to acquire individual data for analytical work, electrodes were attached to the neck of the singers, near the larynx, in order to carry out the recording sessions with the help of Laryngograph devices. Analytical issues are also considered in the chapter, namely technical problems, errors and mistakes, as well as the implementation of intonational analyses and reference frequency calculations. Chapter Four presents a discussion on data measurements procedures, including guidelines for the determination of errors and mistakes and their symbology. Four recording sessions were carried out; two of them fulfilled all the necessary requirements. The singers’ results are presented in chronological order: firstly, a quartet of singers from the Royal Academy of Music, and secondly, sixteen of the BBC Singers. Reference frequency results are also presented and discussed. Chapter Five deals with the intonational strategies as defined by the experimental work. It was discovered that no theoretical model was followed throughout the music piece, but instead intonational procedures were guiding the singers while performing. Also, the two groups adopted different intonational strategies regarding reference frequencies. Alongside with the main issues of the research – intonational strategies regarding pitch behaviour and reference frequencies, pitch equalization within a choir section and text-related issues rank amongst the most important topics that have been revealed by the results. Chapter Six comments on the new concepts brought about by the research. It also delineates some possibilities for future research work on the subject and related issues, especially vibrato singing, text articulation and absolute pitch.
