Abstract (sommario):
Neotectonics, drainage pattern and geomorphology of the orogen-parallel Upper Enns Valley (Eastern Alps)The geomorphology and neotectonics of the Upper Enns Valley (Austria) in the Eastern Alps reveal the formation of a fault-controlled orogen-parallel valley. In the study area, the Eastern Alps have been under surface uplift since Early Miocene times. Quaternary processes such as uplift and cyclic glaciations likely interfere with neotectonic activity as the Upper Enns Valley follows the Salzach-Enns-Mariazell-Puchberg (SEMP) fault. The geomorphologically different landscapes comprise three main tectonic units: (1) the Austroalpine crystalline basement exposed in the Niedere Tauern, (2) the Austroalpine Paleozoic units (Greywacke Zone) and (3) the Dachstein Plateau dominated by Triassic carbonate successions. The Upper Pleistocene Ramsau Conglomerate overlying the Greywacke Zone on the northern slope of the Upper Enns Valley is a crucial element to reconstruct the evolution of the valley. A new14C date (uncalibrated) indicates an age older than 53,300 years, outside of the analytical limit of the methods. Provenance analysis of the Ramsau Conglomerate shows the Niedere Tauern as a source region and consequently a post-early Late Pleistocene dissection of the landscape by the Upper Enns Valley. Paleosurfaces at elevations of about 1100 m on the northern and southern slopes of the Upper Enns Valley allow us to estimate surface uplift/incision of about 2.5 mm/yr. Regularly oriented outcrop-scale faults and joints of the Ramsau Conglomerate document Pleistocene to Holocene tectonic deformation, which is consistent with ongoing seismicity. Paleostress tensors deduced from slickensides and striae of pre-Cenozoic basement rocks indicate two stages of Late Cretaceous to Paleogene deformation independent of the SEMP fault; the Oligocene-Neogene evolution comprises NW-SE strike-slip compression followed by E-W compression and Late Pleistocene ca. E-W extension, the latter recorded in the Ramsau Conglomerate.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract.

Abstract (sommario):
Our paper focuses on several central points concerning pre-nuptial negotiations, the results of which were finalized in marriage contracts. There are two opposing systems of the law governing marital property regimes: the regime of matrimonial community of property or joint marital property, Gütergemeinschaft, and the regime of separation of marital property, Gütertrennung We compare two territories of the Habsburg Empire – the County of Tirol with the regime of separation of marital property dominating, and the Archduchy of Austria South of the River Enns (Lower Austria), with matrimonial community of property dominating in rural areas. For each territory, we concentrate on a single landed estate: Fridau-Weißenburg in the case of Lower Austria, and Innichen in the case of Tirol. Innichen was a small market town with a mixed economy based on agriculture and the trades; while the estate of Fridau-Weißenburg was more rural and agricultural and also preindustrial since the middle of the 18th century.

Abstract (sommario):
On 6 January 1584, the provost of Zwettl in the archduchy of Austria below the Enns recounted events two days earlier that had greatly alarmed him. Present in the town of Zwettl on administrative business, Ulrich Hackel had been very surprised to see the town church unlocked and packed with peasants and townspeople. An additional 600 peasants, according to his reckoning, were gathered outside the church. All were dressed in their best and all were celebrating Christmas. Yet, as far as Hackel had been concerned, Christmas had already been celebrated ten days earlier. He halted worship in the church, telling the congregation that Christmas was now past and had been duly marked. He then sought out the local magistrate to ensure that the church would be kept locked and that trade would be resumed in the town. His actions had, however, aroused very great opposition. An angry crowd surrounded Hackel, accusing him of being a papist and a rogue and demanding to know why he was depriving them of Christmas. He believed that had he uttered one more word in favor of the earlier celebration of Christmas, he would have been killed on the spot. Hackel had escaped their fury only by being escorted by the town magistrate out of the local parish house in which he had taken refuge and beyond the walls of the town.

Abstract (sommario):
The high degree of monetisation of the area of present-day Austria in the Roman Empire was largely lost after the departure of the Romans in the late 5th century. Medieval coinage in the marcha orientalis began later than in all neighbouring territories. The start of minting is currently assumed to have been between 1110 and 1130. The basis of our knowledge are the coin finds from which we know the pennies that were minted in the mints in Krems, Neunkirchen, Enns and Friesach in the first half of the 12th century. This coinage set in motion a renewed monetisation of the Austrian area, which reached a first peak already in the second half of the 12th century. In order to get to know this phenomenon better, another source genre is consulted here: In charters of the eastern Austrian area, payments made are occasionally mentioned or possible future payment transactions are regulated or announced. These mentions of "amounts of money" can make a significant contribution not only to the dating of the beginning of coinage, but also to the question of how quickly coined money was able to prevail over non-monetary means of payment.

Abstract (sommario):
Neogene uplift and erosion in the Alpine Foreland Basin (Upper Austria and Salzburg)In the present paper we apply a multi-technique approach (shale compaction data, seismic stratigraphy, isopach maps, moisture content of lignite, fission track data) to assess timing and amount of uplift and erosion of the Alpine Foreland Basin. The combination of the different techniques allows us to discriminate the effects of two different erosion events during the Neogene: (1) Seismic stratigraphy and isopach maps indicate a Karpatian (Early Miocene) regional tilting of the basin to the west (slope of about 0.5 %) and a minor erosion phase. (2) Moisture content of lignite combined with fission track data provides evidence for extensive regional uplift after deposition of Late Miocene fluvial deposits. It is estimated that sediments, 500 to 900 m thick, have been eroded. Shale compaction data derived from sonic logs indicates additional uplift of the eastern part of the basin (near the river Enns). Here, 300 to 1000 m of sediments were additionally eroded (giving a total erosion of about 1000 to 1900 m!), with a general increase of erosion thickness towards the northeast. While the regional uplift is probably related to isostatic rebound of the Alps after termination of thrusting, the local uplift in the east could be affected by Late Neogene E-W compressional events within the Alpine-Pannonian system. Both, tilting and erosion influence the hydrocarbon habitat in the Molasse Basin (tilting of oil-water contacts, PVT conditions, biodegradation).

Extreme climatic events of rainfall occurring in Southeastern South America (SESA) are commonly related to the occurrence of "El Niño - Southern Oscillation" Events (ENSO). The ENSO can be identified by the variation of Sea Surface Temperature (SST), that can occur in the Pacific Ocean region called the East Equatorial (Canonic ENSO) and in the Central Pacific (Modoki ENSO). Both result in different precipitation anomalies in several areas of the globe, such as SESA. The objective of this research was to expand the studies on the effects of the ENSO Modoki, proposing to identify them and compare them to the ENSO Canonic, observing the implications in the alteration of atmospheric circulation that lead to precipitation anomalies on the SEAS. In order to identify the Canonic and Modoki phenomena, we used climatic indices and SST anomalies maps for the period of DecemberJanuary-February (DJF). After identifying the types of events, simple linear correlation calculations were developed between the Oceanic Niño Index (ONI) and the precipitation anomalies of the region in question for the years identified in the previous stage. Precipitation anomaly maps based on Reanalysis data completed the list of images for comparison with SST anomalies. In some Modoki years, their responses are within the expected range for the warming phase, with positive precipitation anomalies as well as in cooling phases with negative precipitation anomalies. However, in SESA, the reversal of the precipitation anomaly signal during Modoki events is apparent, since, with the expected warming (cooling) of the Pacific would be an increase (decrease) in the volume of rainfall, besides the inversion, also a displacement of the signal to the Atlantic, results of El Niño Modoki and La Niña Modoki. It is also interesting that in canonical years the inversion also happens. The studies also indicated that the common generic mention of SESA as being a homogeneous area of ENSO-related precipitation anomaly begins to fall. It was possible to identify four distinct areas that have also distinct anomalies, often contrary during the same ENSO event.

Hughes, Kirrilee Jane. "To what ends? : the struggle for Asia literacy in Australia". Phd thesis, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/1885/156355.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
'Asia literacy' is an Australian aspiration to 'know Asia'. This thesis is thus a study of place, of language and of identity in relation to both 'Asia' and 'Australia'. I employ a critical spatial perspective and argue for the importance of context in conceiving the rationale for, objectives of and agency within Asia literacy. Context is not simply a question of classrooms and resources, or of which Asian societies and languages to prioritise. Rather, context is created in languages and cultural studies education through the value assigned to those language and cultures, the people who embody them and the places from which they originate. In this thesis, I argue that context within Asia literacy transcends physical classrooms in Australian schools and universities to also encompass the broader Australian community; educational institutions outside Australia and in Asia; and speech communities of Asian languages located within and beyond Australia. My focus in this thesis is not on investigating why provision and proficiency targets for Asian languages and Asian studies education, which comprise Asia literacy, have not been achieved. Rather, I am driven by the shortcomings in how Asia literacy has been conceptualised. What exactly is Asia literacy, who does it target and to what ends? I focus on conceptualisations of Asia literacy in Australia during the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s, which are also reflected in recent discussions and debates. Through a close reading of official reports into Asia literacy from these periods, as well as interviews with report writers, I demonstrate that rationale, objectives and agency have been narrowly conceptualised within Asia literacy. Australian education systems and their students have been the focus of Asia literacy. This excludes students and teachers from Asian backgrounds and conceals 'latent Asia literacy' within the broader Australian community. The rationale for Asia literacy has been increasingly linked to economic advantage: for Australian individuals and for the Australian nation. This 'economic promise' overlooks the fundamental importance of place for languages and cultural studies education. Languages do not have intrinsic values; their value is connected to those who use them. Value cannot be 'constructed' in a language independent of its speech communities. This means that future attempts to increase Australia's linguistic and cultural knowledge of 'Asia' cannot solely focus on languages and cultural studies education delivered in schools and universities. 'Asia', 'Asians' and the broader Australian community have important roles to play within Asia literacy in Australia. In this thesis, I also present the Australia-Indonesia 'Building Relationships through Intercultural Dialogue and Growing Engagement' (BRIDGE) project as a 'circuit breaker' to conventional conceptualisations of Asia literacy. By digitally connecting Australian and Indonesian schools, teachers and students, BRIDGE creates a third place in between Australia and Indonesia, transforming the objects of Indonesian language and cultural studies in creative subjects. The diversity of approaches that can be accommodated within BRIDGE for 'Indonesia literacy' also present a new model for broader 'Asia literacy' in Australia.

Abstract (sommario):
AbstractThe aim of this paper is to develop and evaluate new design options for barges for the economically viable transport of 45’ standard high-cube containers. Special attention was given to the potential performance of the new designs for navigation during low water periods on the Danube. To reach this aim, a four-step approach was conducted: first, a literature review was conducted, second, a scenario was selected leading to defined waterways and goods, third, the results were visualized, and fourth, the design options were evaluated. The research resulted in six design options for barges optimized for accommodating 45’ standard high-cube containers. The barges should serve the Danube stretch between Enns/Austria and Giurgiu/Romania. A major conclusion is that which of the six barge designs fits best depends on the business case, since each of the options have several advantages and disadvantages which have to be investigated such as a different loading capacity. A barge being able to carry between 24 and 90’ standard high cube containers.

Abstract (sommario):
AbstractAlmost 100 years after the arrival of women in the masculine domain of parliament they began breaking the silence about sexual harassment and bullying they experienced. This chapter introduces concepts relating to this experience, including toxic parliaments, sexual and sex-based harassment and bullying, as well as the broader concept of violence against women in politics and its disproportionate impact on those from minority backgrounds. Characteristics particularly associated with Westminster parliaments such as adversarialism and conventions of parliamentary privilege are briefly introduced, along with the distinctive nature of the parliamentary workforce. Feminist institutionalism provides the theoretical framework for the overall argument—that in Australia parliamentary reform took longer than in other Westminster parliaments but that a combination of timing and local mobilisation created a critical juncture and powerful momentum. The chapter ends with an overview of the rest of the book.

Abstract (sommario):
Theatre in the Countryside. The Middle Classes and the Public Sphere between the Provinces and the Metropolis. The Archduchy of Austria below the Enns is particularly suited to tracing the development of a provincial theatrical landscape and investigating its relation to the metropolis, since in the crownland’s centre lay Vienna, one of the largest cities in the world around 1900. The article therefore ex- amines the formation of a bourgeois cultural sphere in those parts of Lower Austria that were then known as the “flat countryside” and which roughly correspond to today’s federal state. During the 19th century, there emerged a theatrical landscape whose principal features proved to be long-lasting and which nevertheless remained a precarious phenomenon. This also applies if we discuss theatre as an expression of the bourgeois public sphere – in both its sense as a theatre business sustained by the middle classes and as the promise to enable participation by a broad public beyond the boundaries of classes and estates.

Abstract (sommario):
Since the New Order era, the Indonesian government, at both the national and the local levels, has advocated traditional architecture as a display of the country’s cultural richness and diversity. In West Sumatra, the traditional house known as the rumah gadang has become an essential signifier of identity representation, especially since it possesses a bagonjong, a unique saddle roof with pointy horn-like ends that distinguishes it from other traditional architecture in the country. In local identity politics, the bagonjong is an essential feature of identity representation. It leads to extensive reproduction as replicas or silhouettes, both in the vernacular and modern design languages. With the current government’s mission to preserve the identity imagining of the area and with the plan to incorporate this imagining into the tourism industry, traditional architecture regains its significance in the community, to be preserved, even rebuilt, despite the many questions surrounding its motivations. This paper scrutinises the position of traditional architecture in the current identity politics of the local government of West Sumatra. It traces the socio-political background that led to the ‘bagonjongisation’ of the government buildings in the area and how the imagining is manifested in a contemporary context. This paper also investigates the opposing voices to understand the contestation of identity representation in West Sumatra. It intends to contribute to the discussion of the identity politics dynamics at the local government level in Indonesia and emphasises that identity construction is not an innocent process of cultural preservation, as it is openly narrated.
