Abstract (sommario):
This thesis is about the use of trees for commemoration and the memory that they have anchored in the landscape. There has been little written on the use of trees for commemorative purposes despite its symbolic resonance over the last 150 years. To determine the extent to which commemorative trees have been employed, the social practice and context in which the trees were planted, field and archival work was undertaken in New Zealand and Australia. This has been supported with some comparative work using examples from Britain and the United States of America. The research also utilizes the new availabilities of records on-line and the community interests that placed historical and contemporary material on-line. The commemorative tree has been a popular commemorative marker for royal events, the marking of place and as memorial for war dead. It has been as effective an anchor of memory in the landscape as any other form. The memory ascribed to these trees must be understood in terms of the era in which the tree was planted and not just from a distance. Over time the memory represented by the trees and its prescribed meanings, has changed. For all its power and fragility, memory is not permanent but nor is it so ephemeral as to exhibit no robustness at all. Instead memory exists in a state of instability that leaves it open to challenge and to constant reassessment based on the needs of the viewing generation. This instability also allows the memory, and thus the tree, to fade and become part of the domestic landscape of treescape memories (Cloke and Pawson, 2008). However, in some circumstances trees are retrieved and reinscribed with specific memory and made relevant for a new generation. The landscape created by commemorative trees is, therefore, multifunctional, in which social relations support memory, remembrance, forgetting, silences, erasures, and memory slippage.

Abstract (sommario):
This thesis is the first close study of Wordsworth and silence. It uncovers the comprehensive investigation into monastic history and hagiography (with special emphasis on St Basil) that Wordsworth engaged in between 1807 and 1810, showing that the type of silence he valued came from the monastic tradition. I trace Wordsworth’s material commitment to the power of silence through his use of hermit figures and his habit of visiting ruined monasteries. I concentrate on the poetry he composed from 1807 onwards and mark his eight-month residence in 1806-7 at the home of Sir George and Lady Beaumont as the locus at which his intensive interest in monasticism germinated. I thus reveal a new dimension to this important patronal relationship, while additionally offering an analysis of a previously unstudied manuscript pamphlet ('An account of an English Hermit' by Thomas Barnard) which Lady Beaumont sent to the Wordsworths in 1809. I show how Wordsworth’s fascination with monastic sites and silence influenced his understanding of linguistic and political representation, inheritance, community, and pastoral retreat. At the same time, this critical attention to silence aids a revaluation of the religious vision of his work. The thesis uses this historical and biographical information as a means of closely reassessing formal, linguistic, and generic features of Wordsworth's poetry. At its root, my work is about the natures of language, poetic representation, and readerly experience. How does Wordsworth communicate via silence? How does he use silence to 'create the taste' for his poetry? Where does silence impact on his renovation of genre and conceptions of form? I conclude that, for Wordsworth, silence is a positive gathering of stillness from within that is nourished by patterns of repeated activity and community. It is one of his most profound heuristic tools.

Abstract (sommario):

Abstract (sommario):
This dissertation examines the ways three medieval English poets used the ancient art of rhetoric to shape their poetic compositions and to make their messages more persuasive to reading and listening audiences. Although these poets employed all three of the traditional modes of persuasion—appeals to logos (reasoning), ethos (character) and pathos (emotion)—this examination focuses primarily on the ways these poets sought to elicit and control emotional responses in their audiences, thereby exposing an emotional dimension in these texts that is not commonly contemplated by critics of these poems. And while the ability of poets to affect audiences emotionally in the pursuit of persuasive agendas was often considered the sine qua non of rhetorical artistry in the Middle Ages, not enough attention has been given to the ways those efforts may shed light on common modern critical approaches to these poems, as well as on their overall interpretation. The first chapter examines how Chaucer, in The Franklin’s Tale, uses rhetorical doctrines of style, and in particular the “colors of rhetoric,” to develop an emotional dimension in his retelling of an old story from Boccaccio. I then show how the Franklin attempts to use the emotional responses of his audience to move them toward accepting a sophisticated notion of empathy as a remedy for the socio-cultural disruptions that troubled late fourteenth-century English society. In the second chapter, I examine how the anonymous twelfth- or thirteenth century author of The Owl and the Nightingale uses rhetorical invention and style to evoke powerful emotional responses in his audience in order to vivify the debate engaged in by the poem’s two avian adversaries. In part, it is the emotional vehemence of their antagonism that shows why the contest they are engaged should be regarded as a specifically rhetorical form of activity, and I argue that the poet’s uncommon display of rhetorical talent is meant as a plea for his professional preferment. The third chapter examines the way the Anglo-Saxon poet Cynewulf uses the art of rhetoric—conceived of in the period as an art of eloquence—to heighten and intensify his audience’s emotional engagement with his Old English retelling of an antique Latin narrative of the martyrdom of Saint Juliana. Specifically, I argue that the poet’s use of a highly stylized ornatus and his rhetorically grounded modifications to the story both serve to move his Anglo-Saxon audience to a more passionate embrace of the saint’s holiness and a fiercer rejection of the evils that threaten their Christian values.

Abstract (sommario):

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract Did the practice and function of oratory change at Rome during the second century bce, and if so, what was the relationship between that change and the range of demonstrable change visible in other elements of Roman politics, society, and culture? At least two distinct stories can be told in response to this question. One sees the second century as a time of significant change in public speech, as the strains of imperial power create new arenas for debate and a consequent enthusiasm among the elite for new technique of speaking imported from the Greek-speaking world. The embassy of Athenian philosophers in 155 would be the emblematic moment for this story. But one can also develop a story of continuities, in which both circumstances and methods remain broadly similar, and the most significant innovation is the increasing use of written texts to preserve a record of oratory. The Elder Cato is the mascot for this story. Confusingly, Cicero proposes both narratives in different works. The underlying difficulty is the inaccessibility of public speech to those who were not present; texts are only a partial remedy. Cicero filled the gaps in the evidence available to him in different ways driven by differing priorities during his career. Oratory’s contribution to analyzing the second-century transformation is thus fundamentally historiographical, revealing points of stress and uncertainty that subsequent generations of Romans had in grasping the nature of the changes that took place between the defeat of Hannibal and the death of Tiberius Gracchus.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract Fashions of speaking and thresholds of tolerance change with social conditions. For example, Fatima and Yasmin, whose diffuse (less assertive, less confrontational) somatic complaints and their indexicality are explored in chapter 4, are past childbearing, members of a generation in which schooling was unavailable to rural women. By contrast, Latifa’ s relatively assertive protest against her brothers’ behavior, embedded in a 1992 lament, is that of an educated young woman (chapter 4). And Rehana, who attained an M.A. from Dhaka University in 1991, is one of two Bengali persons who ever complained to me spontaneously of depression; this psychological idiom reflects her engagement with modernity.

Abstract (sommario):
Islam and the intellectual, ideological, and social advancement it brought about had profound influence on the language, changing the meanings of many terms that had not previously been employed. In addition, it dressed up existing words with new meanings that they had not before worn or indicated. The semantic level of language is distinguished by a high degree of change, development, and language transition flexibility as a result of numerous causes that are intimately connected to the lives of nations in all its facets. This study aimed to highlight some of the manifestations in which the noble Prophetic hadith Approaching the historical and descriptive method of language displayed semantic development The importance of the research lies in its purpose and nature as well as what made the language of the Prophet of God, may God bless him and grant him peace, unique in this regard; Included in this are his condemnation of lip service, praise for eloquence, and the creation of terminology to describe Muslim belief, worship, and conduct; Since language is the identity of man and it is his expression, and since man, as they say, is hidden under his tongue and his choice of words is a piece of his mind, so when he speaks he exposes his mind to others, raising it to a lofty level in society and making it a mirror of his great personality, which precedes other non-Muslims

Abstract (sommario):
The Antioch oration of Libanius is, on the one hand, a typical product of the sophistic work of the orator, designed to glorify his native city, and on the other, one of the best examples of the panegyric of the city in late ancient oratory. A panegyric to the city is a popular genre of solemn eloquence, well studied and described in the ancient rhetorical literature. However, Libanius’ Antioch oration is particularly interesting as the result of the development of ancient oratory, accumulating the old rhetorical tradition and the best achievements of ancient Greek orators in this genre, dating back to Isocrates and to the first sophists. The discovery of the closest literary samples for the Antioch oration allows us to determine the degree and nature of the influence of the previous rhetoric literature (the so-called Second Sophistic) on the development of late ancient eloquence, often referred as the Third Sophistic, as well as assess the contribution of Libanius as a panegyrist to the history of ancient oratory. Abstract (sommario):
The research paper identifies the causes of intercultural communication conflicts in foreign language learning and proposes solutions. The author employed a qualitative research approach, including comparative analysis, investigation, and solution-oriented proposals. Through these methods, the study revealed cultural differences in intercultural communication between Western and Eastern cultures. These differences manifest in perceptions of objects and worldviews, cultural aspects in daily communication, such as differences in eloquence, perceptions of time, etiquette and gift-giving, table manners, forms of address, humor, and concepts of privacy. The study recommends the elimination of cultural biases and prejudices and puts forth principles to help teachers and learners manage intercultural communication conflicts in foreign language learning. These principles include fair and objective communication, seeking common ground while respecting differences, adapting to situations, and respecting cultural knowledge while avoiding hasty judgments. The study also suggests measures to address intercultural communication conflicts in teaching, such as developing learners' intercultural communication skills, enhancing intercultural communication competence, cultivating a multicultural perspective, improving individual cultural quality, stimulating learners' interest in culture, increasing learners' awareness of conscious cultural usage, and creating a multicultural communication environment in the classroom.

Abstract (sommario):
The coronavirus pandemic has created new challenges for rural areas already affected by chronic economic, social, and environmental problems such as depopulation, reduced service provision, ageing, the decline of agriculture income, inhibited accessibility. These problems are of great importance in Central Sicily. Here, the absence of adequate infrastructure, the limited presence of organizations for the promotion and marketing of agricultural products, and climate change have strongly affected the rural landscape. Numerous small towns, farms and extraordinary underground structures are on the verge of extinction, threatened by the ravages of time, forgetfulness, and vandalism. Although often unknown, these eloquent examples of the vernacular heritage of the interior of the island are no longer an integral part of the life of the region. However, if properly identified, studied, protected, re-used, and reconnected to the territory, they could help to reinforce the local cultural identities, and bring positive changes in the socio-economic conditions of the concerned peoples. This paper aims at exploring all these aspects, focusing on the territory of Enna. It also intends to present a pilot project aimed at identifying the most important elements of local rural architecture to promote sustainable methods of preservation and restoration.

The main goal of surgical oncology is to achieve complete resection of cancerous tissue with minimal iatrogenic injury to the adjacent healthy structures. Brain tumour surgery is particularly demanding due to the eloquence of the tissue involved. There is evidence that increasing the extent of tumour resection substantially improves overall and progression-free survival. Realtime intraoperative tools which inform of residual disease are invaluable. Intraoperative Ultrasound (iUS) has been established as an efficient tool for tissue characterisation during brain tumour resection in neurosurgery [1]. The integration of iUS into the operating theatre is characterised by significant challenges related to the interpretation and quality of the US data. The capturing of high-quality US images requires substantial experi- ence and visuo-tactile skills during manual operation. Recently, robotically-controlled US scanning systems have been proposed (see e.g. [2]) but the scanning of brain tissue poses major challenges to robotic systems because of the safety-critical nature of the procedure, the very low and precise contact forces required, the narrow access space and the large variety of tissue properties (hard scull, soft brain structure). The aim of this paper is to introduce a robotic platform for autonomous iUS tissue scanning to optimise intraop- erative diagnosis and improve surgical resection during robot-assisted operations. To guide anatomy specific robotic scanning and generate a representation of the robot task space, fast and accurate techniques for the recovery of 3D morphological structures of the surgical cavity are developed. The prototypic DLR MIRO surgi- cal robotic arm [3] is used to control the applied force and the in-plane motion of the US transducer. A key application of the proposed platform is the scanning of brain tissue to guide tumour resection.

Abstract (sommario):
The science of grammar is the basis on which the sciences of the Arabic language are based, and in which its fruits are manifested, it is the science that studies the structure and the sentence, and the single word has no value unless it is organized into a sentence or structure, and it has no useful meaning, and no eloquence if words and pictures are not combined in a useful sentence that exists on grammatical rules. The science of grammar studies the grammatical elements within the sentence, whether they are essential or preferred elements, including the subject, which is an essential pillar in the actual sentence, and has settled in the minds, and in grammatical rules that the subject is a raised noun that performs the known act or what takes its place, and by checking and scrutiny in language books it caught my attention. That the subject may not exist in the verb in terms of meaning and significance, and if it is raised, the known verb is attributed to it grammatically, and the noun may be active in the meaning and connotation despite the fact that the known verb or what took its place from a source and others are not ascribed to it grammatically, and this is a lot. This issue in this research is for the purpose of distinguishing between the grammatical subject and the semantic subject, and here lies the importance of the research, and the motive for it, based on what was mentioned in the books of the advanced and later grammarians of the Arabic language, citing the evidence they cited, analyzing them, commenting on them, and adding the Qur’an to them. Arabic poetry is old, and modern, striving as much as possible to clarify the rhetorical aspect of this issue; The research will be a modest contribution to the service of the Arabic language and scientific research, following the descriptive and analytical approaches. Key words: Grammar, Subject, Semantics, Arabic, Language.

Abstract (sommario):

Abstract (sommario):
