Jafari, Ehsan. "Novel Approaches in Functional Electrical Stimulation for Rehabilitation : Development, Analysis, and Optimization". Electronic Thesis or Diss., Lyon, École normale supérieure, 2024. http://www.theses.fr/2024ENSL0008.
Testo completoThis thesis aims to overcome the limitations of functional electrical stimulation (FES) through a multifaceted novel approach that concentrates on developing transcutaneous electrodes, stimulation strategies, and biomechanical optimization perspectives. The first study investigates the effectiveness of garment-embedded textile electrodes, used with a moisturizing lotion, against conventional self-adhesive hydrogel electrodes. The evaluation encompasses aspects such as stimulation comfort, temporal consistency, efficiency, and electrical impedance behavior under isometric conditions. Participants in the study underwent tests with both electrode types, evaluating parameters like motor threshold intensity, burning sensation intensity, and maximum tolerable intensity. The results indicate that textile electrodes, when supplemented with lotion, perform comparably to hydrogel electrodes in terms of comfort, consistency, and efficiency. The next study investigates the impact of spatially distributed sequential stimulation (SDSS) at high and moderate intensities on reducing fatigue in individuals with spinal cord injury. The study, focusing on the quadriceps muscle group, found that moderate-intensity SDSS is significantly more effective than high-intensity SDSS. Additionally, a case study was conducted to assess the differences in power generation and fatigue levels between FES cycling using SDSS and a single electrode setup. This involved stimulating the paralyzed quadriceps muscles of four participants over multiple days during motor-assisted FES cycling. The results indicated that SDSS not only generated more power compared to the single electrode setup but did so without significantly impacting fatigue levels. The last study focuses on the optimization of the cycling biomechanical properties and stimulation pattern to achieve maximum output power with minimum applied stimulation. In this work, an easy-to-use and precise muscle model in conjunction with Jacobian-based torque transfer functions was adopted to determine the optimal seating position, trunk angle, crank arm length, and stimulation intervals. Furthermore, the impact of muscle force-velocity factor in finding the optimal seating position and stimulation intervals was investigated. The simulation models showed the trivial effect of the force-velocity factor on the resulting optimal seating position of six healthy simulated subjects. We believe that the contributions of this thesis will increase the efficacy of FES as a rehabilitation technique

Testo completoCardiovascular diseases are the leading cause of death worldwide. The most effective way to combat these diseases is the real-time monitoring of the electrocardiogram (ECG) that reflect the electrical signals generated by the heart cells. The ECG signal provides to cardiologists all the information needed to diagnose heart diseases. So far, the electrocardiogram is recorded by using the cutaneous conventional medical electrodes (Ag/AgCl) based on silver and silver chloride. These electrodes are not destined for long-term use and can provoke skin irritation because of the ionic gel that serves to reduce the impedance of the electrode / skin interface. In this thesis, flexible textile electrodes operating without any ionic gel have been developed as alternatives to medical electrodes (Ag/AgCl). Our approach is based on the modification of conductive inks based on the intrinsically conductive polymer, poly (3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) poly (styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT: PSS) compatible with selected textile substrates. The realization of the electrodes uses manufacturing techniques that can be easily transferred to the textile industry. Characterizations were set up to evaluate the reliability of these systems before and after 50 washes in laboratory and domestic machines. In this case, the surface resistivity of the electrodes-sensors, the modeling of the electrode/skin interface, the analysis of the ECG signal in static and dynamic, the spectral power density of the ECG signal, the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) were analyzed and compared to commercial silver-based electrodes. As our developed sensor electrodes have a real clinical and industrial potential, we have also studied the feasibility of the connection and its durability. The chosen solution consists of two silver-plated polyamide threads, which are available on the market, embroidered to make the connections between the textile sensor electrodes and a flexible electronic module based on a composite film (polyester-aluminum). In addition, two encapsulation methods have also been developed to protect systems during washing and to make them ready for the market

Testo completoThe choice of the filter media structure is crucial in the process of solid-liquid dispersions cake filtration. The influence of the structural and physical properties of textiles on solid-liquid separation performances has been little discussed in the state of the art. Two different suspensions have been studied: milk curd and sludge. For sludge dewatering, two processes have been used: mechanical filtration and electric field assisted dehydration on a filter press. Several filter fabrics whose structural parameters are very different have been developed in this project. The fiber nature, the weave pattern as well as the yarn structure and density were varied. The mechanical filtration, in a filter press, of three types of solid/liquid dispersions was studied: a model suspension of calcium carbonate, a suspension of calibrated PMMA spheres and milk curd. The electro-dewatering of a Kaolin model suspension was optimized by using a conductive fabric as a filter and electrode at the cathode side. In order to optimize the structure of these hybrid fabrics, a study on the link between the structural properties and electrical and ionic resistance as well as their ion exchange surface as an electrode has been carried out. In view of these results, electrode filter fabrics have been developed using a weave pattern having good filtration performances. The first electro-dehydration results obtained by replacing the filter and the electrode with a single conductive medium show the advantages of this new configuration

Testo completoThe goal of this thesis is to propose a mathematical model of visual stimulations in order to finely analyze experimental data in psychophysics and electrophysiology. More precisely, it is necessary to develop a set of dynamic, stochastic and parametric stimulations in order to exploit data analysis techniques from Bayesian statistics and machine learning. This problem is important to understand the visual system capacity to integrate and discriminate between stimuli. In particular, the measures performed at different scales (neurons, neural population, cognition) allow to study the particular sensitivities of neurons, their functional organization and their impact on decision making. To this purpose, we propose a set of theoretical, numerical and experimental contributions organized around three principal axes: (1) a Gaussian dynamic texture synthesis model specially crafted to probe vision; (2) a Bayesian observer model that accounts for the positive effect of spatial frequency over speed perception; (3) the use of machine learning techniques to analyze voltage sensitive dye optical imaging and extracellular data. This work, at the crossroads of neurosciences, psychophysics and mathematics is the fruit of several interdisciplinary collaborations
