Abstract (sommario):
This work is intended to contribute with knowledge to the area of electic motorsfor propulsion in the vehicle industry. This is done by first studying the differentelectric motors available, the motors suitable for vehicle propulsion are then dividedinto four different types to be studied separately. These four types are thedirect current, induction, permanent magnet and switched reluctance motors. Thedesign and construction are then studied to understand how the different typesdiffer from each other and which differences that are of importance when it comesto vehicle propulsion. Since the amount of available data about different electricmotors turned out to be small a tool was developed to use for collecting data fromthe sources available which can be for instance product sheets or articles with informationabout electric motors. This tool was then used to collect data that wasused to create models for the different motor types. The created motor models foreach motor type could then be used for simulating vehicles to investigate how thespecific motor is suited for different vehicles and applications. The work also containsa summary of different electric motor comparison studies which makes it agood source of information during motor type selection in the process of designingan electric vehicle.

Yang, Sichao. "In-wheel motors for electric vehicles". Thesis, University of Newcastle upon Tyne, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/10443/4054.

Abstract (sommario):
The in-wheel motor technology as the source of traction for electric vehicles has been researched recently because it is compact and ease-to-integrate. The motor is housed in the wheel. Since the room for the motor is tightly defined by the size of the wheel and there is no gearing system, the motor must have a high torque density to drive the vehicle directly and a high efficiency to keep cool. The existing motor uses a surface-mounted magnet topology. To make it more cost-competitive, the magnet material needs to be reduced while maintaining the torque performance at the rated operating condition. It is the motive of this Ph.D. research. The thesis starts with a brief introduction on the background of the electric vehicle. Then the major challenges of the in-wheel motor technology are summarised. With the derived specifications, an induction machine and a switched reluctance machine are then simulated and analysed. Still, the permanent magnet synchronous machine is proved to have the highest torque density. Change from surface-mounted to interior topology, six new magnet topologies are investigated. The V-shaped interior magnet topology shows superior torque-to-magnet-mass ratio and is easy-to-manufacture. It gives 96% torque while using 56% of the magnet mass compared to the existing motor due to the assist from the additional reluctance torque and the lower magnetic circuit reluctance. The key to use less magnet mass while avoiding the demagnetisation is the front iron shielding effect. The analytical explanation on the better resistance to demagnetisation in the V-shaped motor is provided. The magnet loss mechanism is discussed for proper segmentation. Detailed design adjustments are made to compromise between the torque-to-magnet-mass ratio and the manufactural practicality. Issues regarding to lower mechanical rigidity occurred in initial assembly of the prototype and solutions are proposed. Followed by successful assembly, experimental tests were conducted and results show good agreement with the simulation. A specific form of torque ripple is found in the V-shaped motor and occurs generally in all fractional-slot concentrated-winding machines with saliency. It is explained by an analytical model. This model is also extended to explain the generally lower reluctance torque in vi fractional-slot concentrated-winding machines. Potential design improvements are suggested and simulated for future versions.

Groen, Benjamin Carson. "Investigation of DC Motors for Electric and Hybrid Electric Motor Vehicle Applications Using an Infinitely Variable Transmission". BYU ScholarsArchive, 2011. https://scholarsarchive.byu.edu/etd/2696.

Abstract (sommario):
Since the early 1900's demand for fuel efficient vehicles has motivated the development of electric and hybrid electric vehicles. Unfortunately, some components used in these vehicles are expensive and complex. AC motors, complex electronic controllers and complex battery management systems are currently used in electric (EV) and hybrid vehicles. This research examines various motors and speed control methods in an attempt to help designers identify which motors would be best suited for an EV powertrain application. The feasibility of using DC motors coupled with an Infinitely Variable Transmission (IVT), to obtain an innovative new electric or hybrid electric powertrain is also presented. The results of this research include an extensive review of the many motor types including a comparison chart and motor hierarchy. An experiment was designed and built to test motorspeed control methods. Testing with two DC separately-excited motors and a differential as an IVT was also conducted. These tests revealed that field weakening appears to be a viable low-costspeed-control method. Testing of these motors, coupled with an IVT revealed that the output of a differential or planetary gear set can be controlled by varying the speed of the inputs. Combining this information in a product development mentality led to the concept of using one DC motor as a power or traction motor while another motor acts as a speed controller, with the method of speedcontrol on the speed control motor being field weakening. This concept allows most of the power to be delivered at an efficient rate with a simple form of speed control. This concept may also eliminate the need for expensive, complex electronic motor controllers. This approach could be used to improve the safety and reduce battery management requirements by lowering the operating voltage of the entire system.

Abstract (sommario):
This thesis proposes a technique to determine and improve the performance of a sensorless speed estimator for an induction motor based on Motor Current Signature Analysis (MCSA). The theoretical concepts underlying the parameter based observer are developed first and then the model of the observer is built using Simulink. The observer is developed based on Model Reference Adaptive System (MRAS). The dynamic performance of the observer and its behavior due to variation of machine parameters is studied. The error in speed estimated using this observer is shown and the ability of MCSA to retune the rotor speed from the stator current spectrum. The spectrum estimation technique has been implemented using a software routine in Matlab. Both the observer and MCSA techniques were implemented practically on an induction motor. The performance of the combined sensorless speed estimation system was tested and verified.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The behaviour of induction motors at a petrochemical plant under transient conditions was investigated with the view to improve plant immunity to voltage fluctuations. The benefits of using a phase-variable induction motor model rather than the simpler d-q models usually employed are investigated. A simplified model of the plant electrical distribution system was derived. Phase variable and d-q induction motor models were implemented as well as a synchronous generator model. Practical considerations precluded the use of commercial software for the simulation of transient conditions and a basic simulation program was developed using Matlab to evaluate the behaviour of the dynamic machine models and distribution system. It was established that the configuration of the installed re-acceleration system can be optimised to reduce the possibility of plant outages as a result of voltage fluctuations. It was found that the use of more detailed induction machine models provide valuable insight into system behaviour and is justified if accurate motor parameters are available or can be estimated. The simplified plant model yielded useful results and enabled the identification of incorrect system data. The investigation showed that Matlab is suitable for the rapid development of a basic transient simulation program that can be used to study the behaviour of different interconnected dynamic machine models.

Abstract (sommario):

This thesis has studied permanent magnet motors in electric vehicles (EVs) under the assumption that they are tractable due to a low weight and high compactness. The implementation has been investigated through a case study, which resulted in an EV simulation model. The model contains a maximal torque per ampere and a closed-loop field weakening controller. Abstract Faults are a special concern in permanent magnet motors. Fault sources and faulted behavior are addressed separately. The EV model was used to simulate faulted behavior. Abstract Two passive fault measures are suggested as the most attractive for propulsion purpose motors; these are shutting down the inverter and imposing a balanced short to the machine terminals. The balanced three phase short circuit showed a considerable transient behavior not seen during inverter shutdown. This results in an increased requirement to the inverter rating using the balanced short. Also, demagnetization risk of rotor magnets is higher under the balanced short. Abstract The maximal braking torque during inverter shutdown was high for the simulation model, and exceeded the braking torque of any fault. This concern led to a mathematical examination of the inverter shutdown, resulting in two equations that may be of use during design. The resulting equations are based on simplifications done in the literature, and show the relationship of the balanced short to the inverter shutdown.

Peabody, Frank Gerald. "An investigation of high speed, thin steel rotor, annular, double sided, linear induction motors". Thesis, University of British Columbia, 1988. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/29056.

Abstract (sommario):
The objective of this dissertation is to analyse the performance of a linear induction motor suitable to drive a circular saw blade. A selection of analytical methods available from the field of electrical machine theory was used to investigate the particular type of motor. The theoretical analysis is supported by an extensive experimental investigation. Although LIMs have been designed, analyzed and applied in other applications, significant differences exist between those LIMs and the one used for the new application. These include: the annular shaped motor, the smaller air gap, and the rotor which is thin and made of steel. Because of these differences, the methods used by previous investigators were not sufficient to design the LIM required. The theoretical analysis used a selection of methods described in the literature to quantify the effect of the rotor material, the end effect and the edge effect. New methods are described to analyse the effect of the annular shape, the normal forces on the rotor and the coil connection. In addition, a new consideration in the optimisation of these type of motors is described. An extensive experimental program was undertaken. Six different linear motors were constructed with output powers ranging from one to fifty kWatts. In addition, inverters, dynamometers, flux measurement apparatus, speed measurement, thrust measurement and friction measurement apparatus were designed and constructed. The effects on performance of slot harmonics, winding connections, the end effect and the edge effect were measured. Several contributions to the field of electrical machine theory are presented. The first is a new annular disc motor resistivity correction factor. Second, is the analysis of the effects of poles in parallel versus in series in linear induction motors. Third, is the experimental comparison between odd and even pole designs. The fourth is a second optimum goodness consideration for LIMs, which had not previously been considered. The fifth is the analysis of the rotor/stator attractive force for magnetic rotor double sided motors and a description of the flux (crenelated flux) which causes the force. Finally, a criterion for when the re-entry effect may occur is presented.

In this thesis, the multilayer PI/nanocomposite films were prepared using an optimized synthesis process. The synthesized samples are characterized by experiments and simulations. First, the samples degradation mechanism was explored using pulse power source. Second, dielectric constant, dielectric loss, insulation lifetime, dielectric strength, conduction current, space charge and thermal stimulated current (TSC) were investigated. Third, trap levels were calculated using total charge decay data and TSC data. In the end, multilayer PI/nanocomposite 3D models based on actual boundary conditions obtained from SEM/TEM images of synthesized samples were constructed in COMSOL Multiphysics software. The impact of nanoparticle dispersion on the electric field enhancement is explicitly described in this model. Our results demonstrate that the chances of nanoparticles agglomeration are reduced by using multilayer structure. In consequence, less space charge and low electrical fields are observed in multilayer films. Using multilayer insulations would ensure reliable operation for electric motors and increase its lifetime

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The aim of this study is to critically evaluate the voltage injection position sensorless control technique as applied to the reluctance synchronous machine (RSM) drive and to implement the technique on a 5.5 kW RSM and a 110 kW RSM. The technique is evaluated by using an accurate mathematical model of the RSM in a simulation package, called Simuwin. The negative effects that cross-magnetisation and the slotted air-gap have on the technique are intensively investigated. It was showed that these effects can cause an error in the position estimation of up to 30°. The TMS320F240 DSP was used as the controller for the RSM drives to implement the position sensorless control technique. Measurements on both RSM drives confirm the simulated results.

Dibua, Imoukhuede Tim Odion. "Development of a high power density motor for aircraft propulsion". Texas A&M University, 2006. http://hdl.handle.net/1969.1/4933.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Electric propulsion has been studied for a long time. Most of the electrically propelled vehicles that have been developed however have been ground vehicles. Recent research by NASA has promoted the development of electric aircraft. Most aircraft are currently powered by heavy gas turbine engines that require fueling. The development of electric motors to replace gas turbines would be a big step towards accomplishing more efficient aircraft propulsion. The primary objective of this research extends previous work by developing a high power density motor for aircraft propulsion. This design is novel because it does not require a dynamometer to provide the torque to drive the vehicle. Equally important for successful testing of the motor was the design and development of a spin pit interface that was used as a containment vessel during testing. The research led to a designed, fabricated, assembled, modeled, and tested motor. Voltages, currents and power outputs of the motor were measured and used to determine the motor’s efficiency. The gaps between the motor’s magnets were related to the current and power it produced, and modifications were made based on this relation. The vibrations of the motor were also studied and MATLAB codes were written and used to reduce these vibrations. Significant among the objectives was monitoring the temperatures of the motor’s stators due to their close association with the rotating parts. The windage and friction losses between the stators and the magnets provided a challenging hurdle in the research. These windage and friction losses were predicted, analyzed and measured, and modifications were made to reduce them. Finally, results were compiled, tabulated, and analyzed. Results obtained before and after the modifications were compared, and these comparisons were used to assess the necessity and effectiveness of the modifications. The efficiency of the motor was found to be 82.9% and the power density was evaluated as 33.1 W/lb based on a rotor weight of 497 lb. It was concluded that the litz wire used in the motor has high, frequency related impedances that could be reduced but not eliminated.

Abstract (sommario):
The main objective of the present thesis focuses on the integration of the in-wheel electric motors into the conception and control of road vehicles. The present thesis is the subject of the grant 186-654 (2010-2013) between the Laboratory of Signals and Systems (L2S-CNRS) and the French Institute of Petrol and New Energies (IFPEN). The thesis work has originally started from a vehicular electrification project, equipped with in-wheel electric motors at the rear axle, to obtain a full electric urban use and a standard extra-urban use with energy recovery at the rear axle in braking phases. The standard internal combustion engines have the disadvantage that complex estimation techniques are necessary to compute the instantaneous engine torque. At the same time, the actuators that control the braking system have some delays due to the hydraulic and mechanical circuits. These aspects represent the primary motivation for the introduction and study of the integration of the electric motor as unique propelling source for the vehicle. The advantages brought by the use of the electric motor are revealed and new techniques of control are set up to maximize its novelty. Control laws are constructed starting from the key feature of the electric motor, which is the fact that the torque transmitted at the wheel can be measured, depending on the current that passes through the motor. Another important feature of the electric motor is its response time, the independent control, as well as the fact that it can produce negative torques, in generator mode, to help decelerate the vehicle and store energy at the same time. Therefore, the novelty of the present work is that the in-wheel electric motor is considered to be the only control actuator signal in acceleration and deceleration phases, simplifying the architecture of the design of the vehicle and of the control laws. The control laws are focused on simplicity and rapidity in order to generate the torques which are transmitted at the wheels. To compute the adequate torques, estimation strategies are set up to produce reliable maximum friction estimation. Function of this maximum adherence available at the contact between the road and the tires, an adequate torque will be computed in order to achieve a stable wheel behavior in acceleration as well as in deceleration phases. The critical issue that was studied in this work was the non-linearity of the tire-road interaction characteristics and its complexity to estimate when it varies. The estimation strategy will have to detect all changes in the road-surface adherence and the computed control law should maintain the stability of the wheel even when the maximum friction changes. Perturbations and noise are also treated in order to test the robustness of the proposed estimation and control approaches.

Abstract (sommario):
Several new nonlinear algorithms for speed control of electrical drives are developed. They are compared with the algorithms for integral-proportional (I-P) control, sliding mode control (SLM) and adaptive control which uses the torque and parameter observer. To achieve fast and robust response, all algorithms use very large gains. In a new, variable limit PI (VLPI) control algorithm, integrator windup is completely prevented by using a high gain, "variable dead zone" nonlinearity as a local feedback over the integrator. Recently proposed soft variable structure (SVS) control, derived by using the Liapunov direct method, is modified so that the algorithm can be implemented with only the output measurements. Proper operation is achieved for any value of the output variable. The new control is very robust, but exhibits a steady state error. Two versions of the adaptive PI (API) control algorithm are developed that have fast and robust transient response with zero steady state error. The SVS API version operates similarly as the modified SVS control, but does not have its drawbacks. The SLM API version operates like the SLM control during large transients, and like VLPI control when close to the steady state. The local stability of the control is proved using the "small gain theorem". Its global behavior is analyzed by describing functions. Very good operation of the SVS API speed control within the proportional position loop is demonstrated. Faster transient response is achieved by implementing the SLM adaptive proportional control in the position loop. The operation is the same as the operation of the SLM API control in the speed loop. Similarity between modified SVS control, and classical adaptive algorithms is shown. API control, All the algorithms are simulated and compared for twofold and tenfold changes in plant parameters. The experimental verification of the results for I-P control, SLM control, and modified SVS control, are presented. Theory of the new algorithms is general, such that the results are applicable to any SISO plant that can be stabilized.

Abstract (sommario):
Diesel engines are commonly used in construction machines, for example excavators. In a diesel engine, the combustion of diesel is a process with a considerable environmental impact, with high amounts of emitted greenhouse gases. The bachelor thesis creates a model that investigates the potential of decreasing the environmental impact when replacing diesel engines with electric motors in the construction phase of the construction process of buildings. The model was made in three steps. In the first step the electric motors’ energy consumption were compared with the diesel engines’ energy consumption. Secondly, the results of the comparison were contrasted against the results of an implemented example as to determine the relevancy of the model. Finally, the carbon dioxide equivalent values of the diesel engines and the electric motors were calculated and compared. The result shows that there is a big potential of decreasing the environmental impact. The reduction is in the order of 63%-99% and it is shown that the share of renewable energy sources in the electricity mix is vital as to make the potential as large as possible.

Khiyo, Sargon. "Neuro/fuzzy speed control of induction motors". Thesis, View thesis, 2002. http://handle.uws.edu.au:8081/1959.7/554.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
The thesis involved the design, implementation and testing of a second order neuro-fuzzy controller for the speed control of an AC induction motor, and a comparison of the neuro-fuzzy controller's performance with that of the PI algorithm. It was found experimentally, that the operating temperature of the AC induction motor affected the ability of the PI controller to maintain the set speed. The linear PI algorithm approximation was observed to produce transient speed responses when sudden changes in load occurred. The neuro-fuzzy design was found to be quite involved in the initial design stages. However, after the initial design, it was a simple matter of fine-tuning the algorithm, to optimize performance for any parameter variations of the motor due to temperature or due to sudden changes in load. The neuro-fuzzy algorithm can be developed utilising one of two methods. The first method utilises sensor-less control by detailed modeling of the induction motor; where all varying parameters of the motor are modeled mathematically. This involves using differential equations, and representing them in the form of system response block diagrams. When the overall plant transfer function is known, a fuzzy PI algorithm can be utilised to control the processes of the plant. The second method involves modeling the overall output response as a second order system. Raw data can then be generated in a text file format, providing control data according to the modeled second order system. Using the raw data, development software such as FuzzyTECH is utilised to perform supervised learning, so to produce the knowledge base for the overall system. This method was utilised in this thesis and compared to the conventional PI algorithm. The neuro-fuzzy algorithm implemented on a PLC was found to provide better performance than the PI algorithm implemented on the same PLC. It provided also in the added flexibility for further fine-tuning and avoided the need for rigorous mathematical manipulation of linear equations

Abstract (sommario):
This thesis evaluates an electric vehicle with four independently-controlled in-wheel electric motors. The electric vehicle investigated in this work requires a main con- troller that not only coordinates with each individual motor drive controller, but is also needed to distribute torque and power to each in-wheel motor. The controller adjusts the speed of each motor to the driving conditions according to the require- ments and emulates the behavior of a mechanical di erential. Then, in addition to the electronic di erential controller, a simple yet robust control strategy for maximiz- ing traction force between tire and road is developed and presented. Moreover, the controller continuously senses the yaw rate and prevents over- and under-steering by adjusting the torque on the right or left wheels. Simulation and experimental results validate the proposed strategy.

Abstract (sommario):
The work presented in this thesis is concerned with the development of an on-line technique for detecting and locating partial discharges in the stator winding of a high voltage electrical machine. This technique forms part of an on-line health monitoring strategy for the insulation of high voltage machines. Existing diagnostic techniques and partial discharge measurement systems are reviewed. The requirement for an on-line partial discharge location technique is discussed. An experimental investigation was carried out into the propagation characteristics of partial discharge pulses within a model stator winding. This allowed identification of the main propagation characteristics which were used as the basis for the development of a partial discharge location technique. In the development of a location technique, a means of on-line detection of discharge signals at the motor terminals is required. A study was therefore made on the use of the Rogowski coil for the non-invasive measurement of partial discharges. A partial discharge location system was developed based on the correlation of partial discharge pulses detected at the two ends of a motor phase winding. The performance of the location system was investigated by injecting artificially generated discharge pulses into the model stator winding. Further verification of the ability of the technique to locate the position of discharges was done by injecting high voltage discharges. The final part of the research work was to develop a theoretical model to predict the propagation behaviour of partial discharge pulses in the stator winding of an electrical machine . The effect of electromagnetic propagation through the endwinding region is incorporated in the model of two adjacent coils in a winding.

Abstract (sommario):
Thesis (MEng)--University of Stellenbosch, 2000.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This thesis deals with the design and optimisation of medium power traction switched reluctance machines with tapered and straight stator poles. Only the prototype of the tapered stator pole machine is constructed and evaluated in this study. A non-commercial finite element package is used in the design and optimisation of the machines. The finite element method is applied directly in the optimisation procedure to optimise the design of the machines in multi-dimensions. The lumped circuit analysis method is used only for the purpose of verifying some of the finite element calculated. It is not used in the optimisation procedure. The performance characteristics of the tapered and straight stator pole machines are compared and discussed and the tapered stator pole machine is found to have better torque performance. Also the calculated and measured static torque versus rotor position characteristics of the tapered stator pole machine are compared and discussed.
