Das Konzept der imitatio veterum zählt zu den grundlegenden Denkmustem rinascimentaler Poetik und Kultur. Im Rahmen der sog. Ciceronianismus-Debatte geht es dabei vor allem urn die Frage nach dem Verbindlichkeitsstatus literarischer Modelle, namentlich Ciceros. Am Beispiel der literarkritischen Korrespondenz De imitatione zwischen Giovanfrancesco Pico della Mirandola (1470-1533) und dem 'Ciceronianer' Pietro Bembo (1470-1547) läßt sich zeigen, daß in der Nachahmungskontroverse darüber hinaus Grundprobleme der Renaissance-Episterne implizit mitverhandelt werden. Picos Eintreten für eine eingeborene 'idea loquendi' als normativer Instanz verweist dabei auf Positionen seines erkenntniskritischen Hauptwerkes Examen vanitatis doctrinae gentium. Entwertet wird in beiden Schriften nicht nur eine pagane Autorität, sondem vor allem der epistemologische Wert sensualistischer Prämissen in der Urteilsbegründung. Täuschungsfreie und mithin normative Urteile sind für Pico demgegenüber nur im Rekurs auf eine regulative idea innata bzw. durch göttliche 'Illumination' zu gewinnen.

Abstract The present article offers the first edition of a hitherto unpublished Greek fragment from Cyril of Alexandria’s lost commentary on Hebrews. Moreover, the article provides a German translation of it and a discussion about its authenticity. A detailed theological analysis of the fragment that contains Cyril’s explanation of the Greek term ὁ πρωτότοκος (Hebr 1,6) concludes the article.

The Austrian novelist, essayist and journalist Maria Lazar (1895-1948), only recently rediscovered, who was a contemporary of Thomas Mann and an acquaintance of Bertolt Brecht, wrote many different types of texts. Considered a promising talent back in Vienna, the reception of her works decreased during Lazar’s years in exile. The following contribution aims to reconstruct the dynamics of her marginalization and takes a closer look at the socially critical dimension of No Right to Live and Die Eingeborenen von Maria Blut [The Natives of Maria Blood].

Der Artikel stellt einige Aspekte der dogmatischen Lehren des hi. Ambrosius von der Menschwerdung dar. Vor aiiem legt Bischof von Maiiand groBes Gewicht auf die Tatsache der Menschwerdung des Sohnes Gottes. Nur zweite Person der Trinitat hat den Leib angenommenkein Vater, sondern Sohn Gottes. Hi. Ambrosius betont auch, dass Christus wahrer eingeborener Gottes Sohn und wahrer Sohn der Jungfrau Maria ist. Er spricht aiso von wahrer Gottheit und von wahre Menschheit Christi. Die Lehre von der personaien Einheit Christi mit der scharfen Trennung zwischen seiner Gottheit und Menschheit gehórt zu seinen wichtigsten Erreichungen. Hi. Ambrosius ist darum einer von den Voriaufern der Inkarnationsiehre des Konziis von Ephesus (431) und Chaicedon (451).

Die linksliberale Zeitschrift Die Hilfe (1894-1944) hat sich mit beachtenswerten Beiträgen an der deutschen Debatte über die Kolonialpolitik vor 1914 beteiligt. Das von Friedrich Naumann maßgeblich beeinflusste Organ des Nationalsozialen Vereins fungierte als Diskussionsforum ; seine Spalten öffnete es liberalen Intellektuellen, die die Weltpolitik Wilhelms II. unterstützten. Der Imperialismus erschien ihnen als eine Notwendigkeit ; es galt nach ihrer Konzeption, die Lebensinteressen der deutschen Nationen zu wahren, ihre materielle Zukunft zu sichern in einer Welt, wo das Gesetz des „Kampfes ums Leben“ die Geschichte der Nationen bestimmt, und dem Deutschen Reich den Rang als Weltmacht zu erringen. Die Hilfe spiegelt die Vielfalt der Meinungen über die Kolonialverwaltung, über die beste Organisationsform der überseeischen Kolonien und die Eingeborenenpolitik in den liberalen Kreisen wider. Die Theorien ihrer Mitarbeiter kennzeichnen sich auch – wie bei Paul Rohrbach – durch Widersprüche ; diese versuchten nämlich gegenüber den Eingeborenen eine skrupellose Machtpolitik und christlich motivierte Kulturaufgaben zu vereinbaren.

Abstract (sommario):

Erhard Eylmann (1860–1926) was a German scientist who devoted much of his working life to researching Australia, where he travelled extensively during the period 1896 to 1913. His primary field of expertise was anthropology, about which he wrote at great length in his major work Die Eingeborenen der Kolonie Südaustralien (The Aborigines of the Colony of South Australia). This paper places Eylmann and his work in a tradition of German scientific endeavour which can be traced back to William Blandowski and Alexander von Humboldt. Eylmann’s insistence on the primacy of empirical methodology and his belief in the essential unity of all the scientific disciplines characterise his work. At the same time the paper argues that Eylmann’s approach to anthropological study was also indebted to practitioners outside Germany, in particular Francis Gillen and Baldwin Spencer. Similarly, there were other anthropologists in Eylmann’s own time – foremost among them Carl Strehlow – who adopted a very different paradigm in their efforts to understand indigenous Australians.

As for many travellers of her time the fascination of the unknown and the ‘other’ was a major incentive for the Viennese Ida Pfeiffer (1797-1858) to travel. But not always her impressions of ‘the Others’ were positive. Pfeiffer often found non-western humans and their costumes repellent, although she claimed to learn by her travel experience and although she obviously was aware of sharing a Western view of non-western world. In many respects she might be seen in the tradition of Enlightment, she defended underprivileged and was critical of her own society and civilization. At the same time she applied her own Western standards in representing ‘the Other’ and she was convinced of the superiority of western civilization. So her texts comprise many stereotypes and dichotomies being characteristic for a hegemonial western discourse that Stuart Hall called ‘the West and the Rest’.

SUMMARY Is 'creolization' a process that differs fundamentally from other kinds of linguistic change? Recent debate centers round Bickerto/i's 'Language Bioprogram Hypothesis' (LBH), according to which a pure 'creole' is a newly-created language utilising the lexical items of an unstructured contact-language (a jargon) and the grammatical theory innate in all human beings. Linguistic 'change', on the other hand, is a more gradual process in which tradition plays a part, without sudden breakdown of inherited structures, regarded as characteristic of creolization, which occurs only in certain social conditions. Romance Creoles are here contrasted with patois, in a attempt to discern crucial differences. French completive and relative structures are examined in some detail. The conclusion is that, while some features of Romance Creoles can be seen as continuing the tendencies of non-creole Romance, others involve more radical typological change, resulting, conceivably, from a drastic switch in the way new speakers understand the structure of the language to which they are exposed. A parallel is drawn with earlier periods in Romance history. RÉSUMÉ La 'creolisation' diffère-t-elle de faÇon fondamentale du change-ment linguistique 'normal'? Cet article examine surtout l'hypothèse de Bickerton (Language Bioprogram Hypothesis) qui propose qu'un creole 'pur' se cree d'un coup a partir des elements lexicaux d'un 'jargon de contact', agences par un bioprogramme linguistique inne et universel. En revanche, la tradition jouerait un role dans le changement propre-ment dit, qui s'avere plus graduel, et ne bouleversent pas de la même fa-Çon les structures heritees. Les conditions sociales qui provoquent la creolisation seraient à specifier. On fait le contraste des Creoles et des patois, pour degager des differences fondamentales: on examine surtout la syntaxe des completives et relatives en franÇais. La conclusion: bien que quelques aspects des Creoles ne fassent que prolon-ger les tendances des autres parlers romans, il y en a d'autres qui decoulent plutot d:une alteration typologique plus radicale, ce qui in— diquerait un decalage des attitudes linguistiques au moment de l'acqui-sition de la langue heritee. On fait la comparaison avec d'autres evé-nements au cours de l'histoire des langues romanes. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG Gibt es einen grundsätzlichen Unterschied zwischen 'Kreolisierung' und anderen Arten von Sprachveranderung? Der vorliegende Aufsatz un-tersucht vor allem die sog. 'Sprachbioprogrammhypothese' (Language Bio-program Hypothesis) Bickertons, derzufolge ein reines Kreol eine neuer-zeugte Sprache darstellt, die lexikalische Elemente einer unstrukturier-ten Kontaktsprache (Jargon) zusammen mit einer universellen, eingebore-nen Grammatik verbindet. Dahingegen spielt die tüberlieferung bei regu-lärem, graduellen Sprachwandel eine gewisse Rolle, ohne abruptes Zusam-menbrechen überkommener Strukturen, wie sie in Fallen der Kreolisierung als charakteristisch gelten, die nur unter gewissen sozialen Bedingun-gen stattfindet, Es wird hier zwischen romanischen Kreolsprachen und Volksmundarten (patois) unterschieden, urn grundsatzliche Unterschiede herauszustellen. Hier werden insbesondere Erganzungs- und Relativ-sätze im Franzosischen untersucht. Das Ergebnis ist, daß, obschon ei-nige Aspekte der romanischen Kreolsprachen als Weiterentwicklung von Tendenzen der nicht-kreolisierten romanischen Sprachen angesehen werden konnen, enthalten andere radikalere typologische Veranderungen, die offenbar von einem drastischen Wandel herriihren in der Art, wie die neuen Sprecher die Struktur der Sprache verstehen, der sie ausgesetzt sind. Eine Parallele wird gezogen zu früheren Epochen in den romanischen Sprachen.

The present article aims to observe the new formulas of theatricalization of the show, starting from an eloquent example in this regard, the Natives of Maria Blut (Die Eingeborenen von Maria Blut), an adaptation after Maria Lazar, directed by Laura Bihler. The discussion about theatricality, one that marked the middle of the 20th Century, returns increasingly relevant in the context of increasingly visible attempts at de-theatricalization, which appeared especially against the background of the unprecedented expansion of technologies on theatrical stages. Dramaturgy and story-telling, sets and costumes, chromaticism and psycho-physical organization of the stage space, the multiple role and the deep recalibrations of the theatrical convention, the mask and its force to produce a certain type of atmosphere – all these become so many major milestones in -a discussion of what theatricality was and has become.
